Introducing Re-Firm Elixir Cream

NEW Re-Firm Elixir Cream – a luxurious way to harness the power of stem cells  An innovation like no other, NEW Lamelle Re-Firm Elixir Cream is a cutting-edge anti-ageing solution using the technology of regenerative medicine. Rapid Rejuvenation  Lamelle Re-Firm Elixir Cream is a luxurious velvety-textured moisturiser delivering the purest stem cell conditioned media (SCCM) to rapidly rejuvenate aging skin. It’s other pioneering active ingredients include essential antioxidants, soothing panthenol and hydrating hyaluronic acid along with cell communicating growth factors and anti-ageing peptides. The result? A potent anti-aging, anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant and pigment-inhibiting powerhouse! What is SCCM?   Medical science has recently unlocked the astounding regenerative potential of stem cells and Lamelle, having collaborated with biotechnology companies for decades, has been at the forefront of this exciting new technology. Stem cells are living cells, found in various tissues in the body, with a chameleon-like ability to transform into almost any other cell type. Naturally, this makes them essential for rejuvenation as they can morph into whatever tissue your body requires to heal. They also have the ability to communicate, producing “factors” that influence the behavior of surrounding cells. Our new superstar active ingredient, SCCM, is a stem cell’s “liquid essence” – the result of adipose-derived stem cells in a growth medium. As the stem cells proliferate in this medium they produce multiple active ingredients that infuse into the conditioning media. This medium – the SCCM is now a cocktail perfect for ageing and damaged skin cells to bounce back into action. This is delivered into the skin using a natural encapsulation technology to ensure maximal absorption and optimal results. Superior Stem Cells Stem cells are becoming a prolific active ingredient, but their usefulness depends on their origin. Most cosmetics that tout them are using plant-derived stem cells that don’t have the ability to differentiate into other human cell types, nor communicate with them. At best, they function like an antioxidant. This is why Lamelle’s technology makes use of stem cells derived from human fat cells. They’re proven to deliver the very best results with anti-inflammatory properties in comparison to other types of stem cells.  Still, it’s important to note that SCCM does NOT contain human stem cells as there is no need for this – all their rejuvenating benefits are transferred to the elixir.  Witness a Marvel! Along with SCCM, Re-Firm’s Elixir Cream also contains highly active growth factors, anti-inflammatory cytokines and peptides that encourage the protection and creation of collagen. Day by day, your skin’s cells will receive messages that instructs them to function optimally. Suddenly, mature skin begins to act younger – and the effect is nothing short of transformative.  Within just 28 days, expect to see a dramatic improvement in firmness; reduced wrinkling and a more evenly toned and radiant complexion. To enjoy the very best results, apply Re-Firm Elixir Cream twice daily, or our Re-Firm serum as a booster in concerned areas of ageing.  To learn more about Re-Firm Elixir Cream, visit www.lamelle.co.za

Ready for “skinstant” transformation? Exfoliate like a pro with Lamelle Research Laboratories!

Don’t underestimate the power of exfoliation – it’s one of the most important things you can do for healthy, radiant skin. However, not all exfoliators are created equally and some could even be doing more harm than good. To explain, you might have noticed Lamelle Research Laboratories has several much-loved exfoliating products but none are scrubs. This isn’t an accident. For the most part, granular exfoliators, particular those with irregularly shaped particles (here’s looking at you, ground walnut!) have been shown to cause micro-tears that damage and inflame your skin. This is why our range relies on trusted  chemical exfoliators with active ingredients that don’t just exfoliate, but also serve up a host of other skin-loving benefits for “skinstant” transformation. A case in point  Lamelle Correctives Cathepzyme 1 and 2 are both brilliant liquid exfoliators that contain Cathepsin D analog, an enzyme produced by our own bodies, to stimulate your skin’s natural exfoliation process without disrupting your skin’s barrier function. Use either of them three times a week and you’ll also see a clinically proven improvement in wrinkles, moisture levels and firmness – within just 3 months! As Cathepzyme 2 is slightly more concentrated than Cathepzyme 1, it’s your best bet if you don’t have sensitive skin; aren’t new to regular exfoliation or want to improve the look of KP (keratosis pilaris). For those who don’t know, KP – sometimes unflatteringly referred to as “chicken skin” is a harmless yet annoying, genetic skin condition characterised by rough-feeling bumps that typically appear on the back and outsides of the arms, but can occur pretty much anywhere. Fortunately, the right chemical exfoliator can help you smooth it. Gently does it  Another duo that can up your exfoliation game is our Correctives AHA re-texture solutions, available in a concentration of 5% AHA as well as 8% AHA, Formulated for anyone with a combination or oily skin, they’ll reveal smoother, brighter-looking skin and keep your pores free of debris and excess oil. Another plus? Its glycolic acid will also help stimulate your skin’s collagen production while increasing hydration. Yet another way to gently increase your skin’s cellular turnover? New Lamelle Skin Essence Clear Priming Liquid, specially formulated for acne-prone skin, has a refreshing, water-like texture but contains both AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids) and BHA (beta hydroxy acids). This way, it can gently exfoliate both the surface of your skin as well as deep inside your pores to help clear your complexion. You’ll also benefit from its other superstar ingredients which include skin barrier-protecting probiotic lysates, soothing panthenol and antibacterial zinc.  Peel and reveal Another great way to get your glow on is to treat your skin to regular peels. Our highly-skilled Lamelle skincare therapists will be able to analyse your skin and recommend the right course of peels to best suit your needs. Still, you should know about the latest peel star on the block and that’s the Rice Bran AO Peel system – a 2-part superficial chemical peel that begins in-office but ends in your own home. Packed with the peeling power of both AHAs and BHA, it also includes antioxidant-packed Japanese rice bran to repair and protect along with collagen-encouraging retinol and soothing panthenol. It’s a clever choice for anyone wanting to create a smoother, more evenly toned complexion while addressing concerns like mild sun spots and early fine lines. The bottom line Regular exfoliation is a must for beautiful skin. Still, not all exfoliators are up to scratch – so choose cleverly. Opt for one of our innovatively formulated chemical exfoliators that can help you reveal more radiant-looking skin and serve up a host of other benefits to ensure that, when it comes to big rewards, you’ll reap the very best

Sensitive skin: Maybe she’s born with it, maybe it’s environmental – either way, the cure is Forteve

Ask any dermatologist and they’ll tell you half their patients consider themselves as having “sensitive skin”. Thing is, skin is sensitive by nature. You need to treat it with tender loving care or, regardless of your “skin type”, you could end up experiencing sensitivity. Also, you should know that “sensitive skin” isn’t really a clinical diagnosis but more of an expression that your skin has a tendency to be easily irritated. But why is that? For the most part, this all comes down to the protective fatty outer layer of your skin – the lipid barrier. A chat about fat Think of your skin’s barrier as a brick wall held together by cement. The bricks are your skin’s cells and the cement is partly composed of waxy lipid molecules called ceramides. When your barrier is healthy it does a great job of keeping moisture in and irritants out. When it’s impaired, you’re missing some of that “cement” and this allows moisture to escape and irritants, be it chemicals, wind, heat or UV rays. The result is seemingly unquenchable dryness and skin that’s quick to react with symptoms like redness, stinging, burning or itching. Many people who don’t consider themselves to be the sensitive type can experience bouts of sensitive skin if they unwittingly damage their skin’s barrier. It’s surprisingly easy to do – just ask anyone who’s over-exfoliated before applying a highly fragranced moisturiser! Others, however, drew a genetic short straw and were simply born with a lipid barrier that isn’t as naturally robust as someone else. In this case, you could say you were born with sensitive skin. (Thanks mom!) Beat the burn Happily, whether you’ve always had easily irritated skin; suffer from an impaired barrier condition such as atopic dermatitis or are simply going through a sensitive phase, real relief is at hand. Forteve by Lamelle Pharmaceuticals is the only skin barrier repair solution with a patented pseudoceramide that mimics a healthy epidermal bi-layer.   After years of intensive research, Lamelle has proved that, while replenishing lipids is key to restoring a healthy skin barrier, it’s how you arrange them – in a very specific pattern – that makes the most dramatic difference. Thus, new Forteve contains a patented pseudoceramide that, once applied to the skin, undergoes a phase transformation. It literally arranges itself into multiple layers – as well as the correct patterns – that mimic the unique properties of a healthy epidermal lipid bi-layer. Better than the rest    Currently, the standard method to improve the symptoms of atopic dermatitis is to apply a 5% urea cream. Our trials, however, have shown that applying our pseudoceramide serves up a 150% improvement over those treated with the urea cream. Talk about a dramatic difference! The bottom line Ultimately, whether you’ve always struggled with sensitive skin or are going through a, ahem, rough patch, know that your skin deserves real relief. To start, use Forteve Foaming Cleanser, a daily cleanser so gentle it can even be used on babies’ skin. Next, get those lipids back with either our Forteve Soothing Lotion or Cream. Both are formulated with our patented pseudoceramide complex to fortify and restore barrier function while soothing irritation. Lastly, if you’re dealing with severely dry or cracked skin on areas like your hands or feet, get the TLC you need with Forteve Intensive Urea 5% Cream. This way you get the heavy hydration of urea but fortified with the intuitive biomimicry of our pseudoceramide complex. In no time at all, you’ll get to enjoy the healthy, skin barrier you deserve – whether you were born with it or not.

Start your clear skin journey with ACleo

Blackheads and pimples. We all get them… we all don’t appreciate them… and chances are you’ve tried everything to get rid of them – from useless pore strips to those “miracle” vacuum tools you’ve seen on TikTok! If you’ve searched high and low and still haven’t found a weapon of choice, now’s the time to consider a proven one – ACleo by Lamelle Pharmaceuticals. What is ACleo? Acleo is a range of breakthrough skincare products specifically formulated for people with acne-prone skin. To start, you’ll want to get your hands on the must-have kit containing an oral supplement and a targeted spot treatment.  The all-natural superstar ingredients in the ACleo supplement are zinc and vitamin B. Both are proven to calm inflammation in the skin. This allows existing pimples to heal faster and creates an unfriendly environment for future breakouts. (The bacteria that causes acne thrives in an inflammatory environment.) Better yet, this winning duo also helps your body regulate it’s oil production. Less oil, fewer clogged pores, less acne! As for the topical spot treatment, this contains anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial actives plus pore-exfoliating salicylic acid. It can be applied directly to spots multiple times a day and, because it’s a lightweight clear gel, nobody has to know you’re wearing it. Love that! Meet the gang While the ACleo kit can be used with any skincare routine, you’ll get the best results by using the entire ACleo collection. This starts with the foaming cleanser to remove excess oil without overdrying while zinc and panthenol calm and soothe. Next up, step away from your exfoliator! It’s a myth that you can scrub away acne – harsh, grainy scrubs will only inflame your skin further and spread acne causing bacteria. Instead, use a cotton pad to apply ACleo toner. It includes gentle exfoliating acids to rid your pores of dirt as well as the dead, dry skin cells that can clog them. To finish up, apply ACleo Lotion. It contains soothing anti-inflammatories and, despite its lightweight texture, will give your skin all the hydration it needs without the heaviness thanks to water-binding hyaluronic acid. We’ve got your back! Last but not least, let’s talk about body acne. Rather than cover it, let’s get rid of it with ACleo Body Breakout Spray! Again, it’s full of acne-fighting inflammation-busters, oil-controlling ingredients and salicylic acid to keep your pores clean and clear. Being in a spritzer bottle, makes it easy to treat hard-to-reach areas. Bacne – here’s looking at you! Ultimately, if you’re struggling with spots, ACleo has everything you need to start your clear skin journey today.  For more information: www.acleo.co.za

Ageing gracefully with Dermaheal

The idea of “ageing gracefully” means something different to everyone. At Lamelle Research Laboratories, we believe it’s being able to look like the very best version of you, nobody else, for as long as possible. This is why we’ve created our cutting-edge Dermaheal collection, an innovative range of skincare that addresses the three root causes of ages. These are chronic inflammation, something you can read more about here, cell stagnation and damaging enzymes that increasingly ravage your skin’s cells and structure. What is cell stagnation? Your skin is made up of billions of cells and, to function at its best, these cells need to communicate with each other, relaying important messages like “renew” and “clear waste”. Over time, our cells start to lose the connections that convey these important messages and the results become visible in your skin. Think a loss of elasticity, fine lines, wrinkles, pigmentation, dullness and dryness. Knowing this, we’ve dedicated years of research and relied on Nobel Prize-winning technology to create a unique and patented blend of recombinant human growth factors that you’ll find in all Dermaheal products. These human growth factors are created in a laboratory to be exact replicas of your own growth factors found naturally in your body. By applying them topically, they help restore your skin’s ability to communicate and, within just a few weeks, your skin will start behaving in a dramatically more youthful way. Suddenly, millions of messages to perform vital tasks like exfoliate, heal and produce healthy, fresh collagen start getting “heard”. Ultimately, skin that had once slowed its every natural process receives an invigorating jolt on a cellular level to perform at its very best. When good cells go bad Many anti-ageing skincare products focus on helping your skin produce more collagen and elastin, the proteins that give our skin its youthful firmness. While this is important, it’s a bit like using a cup to remove a flood of water from your house while your leaky roof is still letting in the rain. This is because, as we get older, our bodies don’t just slow down the production of collagen, they also attack it! To explain, we all produce matrix metalloproteinases (yep, it’s mouthful – that’s why we call them MMPs), an enzyme that’s very helpful when it comes to things like wound-healing. In fact, its main job is to snip out excessive, old and damaged collagen where it’s not needed to help pave the way for new, fresh collagen. Alas, thanks to the passage of time, UV exposure and unchecked inflammation, we see an uptick in these once helpful enzymes and then you’re dealing with a case of MMPs gone wild. Suddenly, MMPs can have such a collagen-killing effect on the skin that, much like that annoying junk email we can’t unsubscribe from, we simply have to block them. This is where Dermaheal gets to shine with its potent and proven mix of all-natural MMP inhibitors that include the super antioxidant Pycnogenol, Purslane extract and the Nobiletin. (FYI, Nobiletin is a flavonoid that also helps turn off chronic inflammation on a cellular level. Talk about a great multi-tasker!) The bottom line At the end of the day, who wouldn’t want to look and feel as vital and youthful for as long as possible? While you can always consider going under the knife (no judgies!), you can also rely on our years of clinical research in creating what we believe is our most powerful anti-ageing skincare collection to date. It doesn’t just tackle the signs of aging but addresses the root causes so you can enjoy firmer, smoother, less lined and more radiant skin for as long as possible. To us, this is the very essence of aging with grace. Learn more at www.lamelle.co.za

Here’s what a skincare expert thinks of the biggest Tik Tok beauty trends of 2022

Tik Tok has become a major platform for beauty tips, tricks, advice and tutorials. From creating the perfect curl to mastering a cut crease, beauty Tik Tok offers an overwhelming amount of information, but like most social platforms, it’s not all good. While it’s the perfect platform for makeup artists and beauty experts to share their knowledge, it also allows those who are not educated on the topic, to share their ideas, and potentially create a viral video that can cause more harm than good. We asked Karen Bester, Medical Trainer at Lamelle Research Laboratories, to separate fact from fiction. She investigated some of the top Tik Tok skincare trends of 2022, and this is her professional take on them: Slugging Slugging originated from K-Beauty (Korean Beauty), and involves one simple act: Coating your skin with an occlusive like petroleum jelly before going to bed. The concept is that the occlusive will act as a barrier and seal in moisture, resulting in soft and moisturised skin the next morning. Karen says: “Here I believe that balance is very important. We know that occluding the skin will trap water which will in turn help the enzymes in the skin to exfoliate any dry cells that need removing. If we, however, trap too much water this can lead to maceration which is never a good thing. So slug along when your skin is feeling dry in general or after having a treatment, when your skin needs to heal. Occlusion is not required every night though; your skin should have the ability to trap enough water if the lipid bi-layer is intact. ALSO – long-term use of occlusive products can be comedogenic – i.e. cause breakouts.” Moisture sandwich Another Korean technique, a ‘moisture sandwich’ refers to the act of applying products to damp skin (as opposed to dry skin), because it is suggested that the ingredients will trap the moisture from the water and thus better hydrate the skin. The first product is usually a humectant (a water-absorbing product) and this is followed by an occlusive (to seal in the moisture). Karen says: “It is true and well-researched that applying your products to your skin when your skin is still moist after cleansing does help your skin to trap higher concentrations of water and keep it better hydrated. Applying a humectant (hyaluronic acid is my favourite) first will also help to draw the water in and will trap the water in the skin. A good moisturiser, applied over the hyaluronic acid-containing serum, will mimic the skin’s biology and oils and will keep this moisture trapped. It will also allow the skin to ‘breathe’. Occluding the skin is not required and has its own challenges as discussed under Slugging.” Pore vacuums A pore vacuum is a device that uses suction to remove oil and dirt from the pores in an attempt to deep clean the skin. These devices are readily available online, sometimes for as little as R120. Karen says: “I wish that these did work – we could then just go for relaxing facials and not need to have deep cleanse facials with extractions. Unfortunately, these tools can be quite damaging and cause painful bruising without extracting the comedos. Especially when the skin is not prepared well or with larger, more stubborn congested areas. You would need to cleanse and moisturise the skin, maybe use an enzymatic exfoliator just to loosen the congested areas.” Skin cycling The skin cycling trend was originally posted on Tik Tok by a dermatologist. It involves a four-day skincare cycle, during which active ingredients are applied to the skin for two days (usually a chemical exfoliant on day one and a retinoid on day two), and then the skin is given two days to “rest” (only moisturisers are applied – no active ingredients), before starting the cycle again. The cycle is thought to be good for sensitive skins that can’t use active ingredients every day. Karen says: “We love this trend. Even though it was made Tik Tok famous around a year ago, this has been how medical practitioners have always included more aggressive ingredients that have a side effect profile, into skin routines. This removes the need to add lots of ingredients over each other, it lowers the risk for irritation when using products that contain high concentrations of ingredients and it gives us the ability to also combine ingredients used on the skin and look at stimulating the skin in different ways.” Face taping As strange as it sounds, face taping involves applying tape to areas of the face where wrinkles might form, in an attempt to “straighten” the skin and give it a more youthful appearance for longer. Karen says: “I have not personally tried face-taping but I think it is a fabulous cosmetic tool to have droopy skin look younger – Joan Collins cannot be wrong! Unless you are ripping off the top layer of the skin – the corneum. That is not a good thing and can cause semi-permanent damage to the skin. Of you are using tapes, maybe use an oil to remove the glue so you do not hurt your skin when removing them.” Salt water cleanse Based on the concept that skin looks glowy when you emerge from a swim in the ocean, the salt water facial cleansing trend took off on Tik Tok earlier this year. Users used salt water to cleanse their skin twice a day, before applying their skincare products, and recommended the practice to enhance the skin’s radiance, as well as to treat and prevent breakouts. Karen says: “There is very little data on the use of salt water in skincare. In ancient (pre-2000) medicine we used salt water to rinse wounds and mouths to lower bacterial load and assist in healing. I do not believe that salt water cleansing will have any negative effects on the skin. The only challenge might be if the salt content in the water is extremely high. In this

Tackle adult & teen acne effectively to stay in the clear

Tackling acne effectively means finding a skincare solution that keeps skin healthy, and spot free, naturally. From teen through to adulthood, acne can mar our skin, plague our thoughts and push us to develop bad habits that lead us to squeeze ‘just a little bit’ at the most untimorous moments, such as when we are about to leave for an important event. The stress induced habits of squeezing and popping acne only leads to the breaking of your delicate facial skin surface, causing bleeding and swelling and turning spots and blemishes into angry irritated welts, that make matters worse. It is especially important we don’t touch, poke or fiddle with our face as our fingers carry on average 3 200 different germs belonging to more than 150 species according to Pfizer regarding the importance of clean hands. What to do to manage that irritating acne? #1 Hydrate: Acne responds well to regular and deep hydration. It’s important to keep a healthy regular schedule of cleansing your body and problem acne areas twice a day and after sweating. Follow up with applying hydration to your skin that is not greasy but instead soothing and natural. #2 Natural Effect: Any hydrating solution applied to acne should be 100% natural, without the additives and chemicals of treatments and lotions. Blemish busting BaoCare CLEAR is a gentle, yet effective serum for skin flare-ups of all kinds, including adult acne. A light, non-oily serum made from the baobab tree, it is free of artificial additives and helpful for both teens and more mature skins, formulated with a synergistic combination of tea tree and evening primrose for their anti-microbial properties, which not only heals acne but lightens dark spots as well. #3 Food Friendly: Be mindful of the type of foods you are fuelling your body with, listen to your body’s language and become aware of foods that cause allergies and reactions. Reach for leafy greens and water high-content foods such as watermelons (just in time to be enjoyed on warm Spring days), snack on a cucumber, add tomatoes to stews, and crunch your way through celery, apples and oranges wherever possible. #4 Hydrate again on the inside: Drink clear water daily to help your body’s systems function and flow, flushing toxins out the bowel so your body does not have to send toxins out though the skin dermis. EVE OF THE PARTY ACNE NIGHTMARE: If you are faced with an angry blemish on your face on the eve of a special event, do not touch the blemish, bump or spot as this will induce further swelling. Apply BaoCare CLEAR Baobab oil serum to hydrate and soothe the acne and then cover up with a light dab in the area with a naturally matched cosmetic base to camouflage the red, angry welt. And yes, it’s okay for guys to do this too. After your night out remember to do your evening clean and hydration routine adding BaoCare CLEAR Skincare once again onto your clean skin as a rapidly absorbed moisturizer that will not block pores and help to soothe any flare ups. #6 Facial Trims: Shaving rash can be treated in the same way, as BaoCare CLEAR leaves your face soft and deeply saturated through natural baobab serum moisturisation. #7 Zen Skincare Moments: We could all do with a little less stress, and it is usually when we are stressed and out of our cleaning routine that acne makes its appearance. Make a point of stressing less by adding a simple breathing routine to calm and centre you as you do your cleaning regime and apply hydration to your skin’s acne. Try the 5-5-5 routine of breathing in through your nose for the count of 5, holding you breathe for the count of 5 and releasing your breath through the mouth to the count of 5 to calm mind and body. See your self-care routine each morning and night as an act of self-love for taking action and addressing your acne problem so you can go out and shine in the world with a clear, blemish and acne free skin once again. #BeBaocareWise Available for online purchase at  www.baocare.co.za , Faithful to Nature and Wellness Warehouse. Introducing 07 active oral care products

Dutch oral care brand 07 Active is now available in South Africa. 07 Active products make use of active oxygen to effectively kill bacteria and maintain healthy teeth and gums. Facts about active oxygen: #1 Bad bacteria in the mouth cannot withstand active oxygen The presence of bad or “anaerobic” bacteria in the mouth can lead to several mouth diseases and infections. Bad bacteria is oxygen-hating, and thrives in oxygen-free environments. Oral care products based on active oxygen can combat harmful anaerobic bacteria and are safe for daily use. #2 Active oxygen is proven effective Clinical studies and research has proven that active oxygen is effective in banishing bad bacteria from the mouth. Researchers have studied patients with acute chronic periodontitis (gum disease) and results showed that the use of active oxygen in combination with Scaling and Root Planning (SRP) leads to a significant reduction in the amount of gram-negative anaerobic bacteria. Active oxygen has also been proven anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial, and it promotes the growth of capillary blood vessels. #3 It is a healthy alternative for chlorhexidine Chlorhexidine is an effective bacteria-killer and a well-known antiseptic. Unfortunately, it kills all bacteria, including the good type, which leads to a disrupted oral balance. Over time, it may also discolour teeth and damage the taste buds. Active oxygen is a safe alternative that kills only the bad bacteria in the mouth and poses no danger to the teeth or tongue. #4 It is recommended in the treatment of gingivitis, periodontitis and peri-implantitis Active oxygen works quickly and effectively to eliminate harmful bacteria and prevent new bacterial growth. It also improves the health of the gums, making it a recommended treatment of gingivitis (a mild form of gum disease) and periodontitis (a more serious gum infection). #5 It fights cavities Cavities are a demineralization process of the tooth tissue. Demineralization is initiated by acids that are secreted by certain bacteria, converted from sugars. One of the most acid-forming bacteria is the Streptococcus mutans. Active oxygen is capable of greatly reducing the number of bacteria: In a study at the University of Nijmegen, The Netherlands, the number of Streptococcus mutans bacteria was reduced by 70% after exposure to active oxygen. #6 It prevents halitosis Halitosis, otherwise known as “bad breath,” is caused by the presence of gram-negative anaerobic bacteria in the mouth. This bacteria causes volatile sulphur compounds (VSCs) as a result of the breakdown of proteins. These compounds have an unpleasant odour, which we experience as bad breath. Active oxygen is able to oxidize these proteins, thereby greatly reducing the sulphur odour. #7 It whitens teeth Active oxygen has an oxidizing effect, which is responsible for whitening dentine and removing discolouration on, and in, the enamel. Unlike peroxides, no free radicals are formed during the oxidation process, which makes active oxygen safe for tooth enamel and gums. The 07 Active oral care range consists of two products: 07 Active Whitening Toothpaste (R129) This toothpaste removes superficial stains for beautiful and naturally white teeth. It is mild on the enamel and does not contain any aggressive bleaches or abrasives. It has a 7-fold effect: keeps teeth beautifully white, helps maintain healthy gums, prevents plaque, combats bad bacteria, combats bad breath, protects against cavities and is suitable for sensitive teeth. Brush twice per day for two minutes. Active oxygen With fluoride pH neutral Contains Ardox-X®technology 07 Active Mouth Rinse (R169) With brushing, using interdental brushes and dental floss, 75% of all plaque can be removed. That means there are still bacteria remaining in the mouth. Rinsing with O7 Active Mouth Rinse helps to keep the mouth healthy. Fill the inner cap with the right dosage and rinse the mouth for 30 seconds. Spit out and do not rinse again with water. Rinse the mouth twice a day, after brushing. Suitable for adults and children from the age of 6 years. Active oxygen With fluoride Alcohol-free pH neutral Contains Ardox-X®technology   07 Active products are available from takealot.com and Clicks. Learn more: https://www.o7active.com/

Here’s how to vamp up your skincare regime for spring

After months of icy weather, having to wear several layers of clothing and drinking endless cups of hot tea, the start of spring is a welcome change. Longer and warmer days means spending more time outdoors and finally having some fun in the sun. When the temperature changes, so does your skin’s needs. Ensure your skin looks and feels its best this spring by making a few small adjustments to your daily regime: Add vitamin C to your skincare regime Vitamin C is one of the most important ingredients you can use to ensure clear, bright and radiant skin. It’s also essential for preventing and minimising pigmentation. While you can apply vitamin C skincare products all year round, they’re particularly important when we enter spring and summer, as vitamin C helps protect your skin from the effects of the sun’s harsh UV rays. Creightons Vitamin C Serum (R139.95) contains 2% vitamin C to treat a dull complexion and uneven skin tone. This non-greasy essence quickly melts into the skin, releasing beneficial ingredients vitamin C, natural fruit acids and enzymes, to hydrate and enhance your natural glow. The delicate area around the eyes deserve a special treat after winter. We recommend Creightons Vitamin C Eye Serum (R115.95). This 2% vitamin C serum rejuvenates and replenishes the under eye area while minimising the appearance of dark circles. Give your skin a moisture boost We’re quick to associate moisturising products with winter, but it’s common for skin to need a moisture boost during spring, too. When seasons change, the skin goes through a disruption and its barrier function becomes vulnerable. Giving it an extra moisture boost helps to avoid dehydration-related breakouts and sensitivity, dryness and flaking. One of the best moisture-providing ingredients is hyaluronic acid. It’s able to hold up to 1000 times its weight in water, and when applied to skin, it has the ability to restore and maintain moisture levels. Try Creightons H20 Boost Foaming Gel Wash (R109.95), H20 Boost Face Serum (R179.95) and H20 Boost Day Gel (R169.95). This trio makes use of hyaluronic acid to intensely moisturize skin and keep it hydrated for up to 24 hours. Don’t forget exfoliation When the temperature rises your skin can become a little oilier, which means you may need to exfoliate more regularly to ensure sebum and dead skin cells do not clog up your pores and lead to breakouts. Glycolic acid is an excellent exfoliant: it dissolves the sebum that holds dry and dead cells on the surface of the skin, it increases cell turnover, boosts collagen and elastin production and improves the skin’s tone and radiance. For high-performance exfoliation, we recommend NIP+FAB Glycolic Fix Daily Cleansing Pads (R379.95). Soaked in 2.8% exfoliating glycolic acid to retexture and resurface skin, this moisturising formula with hyaluronic acid and soothing blue daisy helps to reveal brighter and smoother looking skin. We recommend using it with NIP+FAB Glycolic Fix Serum (R295.00), an innovative overnight serum with 4% glycolic acid to retexture the skin’s appearance. This highly effective formula smoothes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles while improving skin texture. Designed with the pore-refining ingredient PoreAway, the size of pores are visibly reduced for a more refined, even looking complexion. Time to get bronzed Getting bronzed doesn’t need to be dangerous – you can avoid the sun and sun beds while still getting a beautiful sun-kissed look. Modern sunless tanning products don’t cause streaking or that dreaded orange glow and are easy to use, even for beginners. Australian Gold offers a range of body bronzing products that are safe and easy to use, with natural-looking results. Australian Gold Instant Sunless Mousse (R264.00) is a quick-dry, oil-free formula that delivers a natural-looking, Aussie-glow all year round. This formula allows for even, streak-free coverage in one easy motion. If you prefer a lotion texture, try Australian Gold Instant Sunless Lotion (R304.00), which helps your skin develop a rich, sun-kissed bronze colour in no time. It offers the perfect balance of caring and bronzing ingredients for summer-ready skin that’s healthy and nourished. Invest in SPF SPF is a must-have all year round, but chances are your body was wrapped up during winter, eliminating the need for all-over sun protection. Prolong the youthfulness of your skin and avoid potentially dangerous sun burns by applying SPF to exposed areas of the body, every day. Piz Buin sun care products are lightweight and non-greasy, plus they smell incredible! For everyday facial protection, we recommend Piz Buin Sun Protection Allergy Face Cream SPF50(R152.00). It offers high protection to sun sensitive skin and contains a unique anti-irritant shield complex proven to help strengthen the skin’s resilience to the sun. For the body, try Piz Buin In Sun SPF30 Sun Lotion (R172.00), which has advanced UVA/UVB filters to protect the skin from the sun and is enriched with antioxidants to prevent premature skin ageing, or Piz Buin Allergy SPF30 Lotion(R216.00) which has been clinically proven to protect sensitive skin from the sun and provide long lasting moisturisation while increasing your skin’s tolerance towards the sun. And lastly, if you end up spending a little extra time in the sun, be sure to nourish your skin with Piz Buin After Sun Soothing Lotion (R104.00). Non-greasy and fast-absorbing, it combats the effects of sun stress by cooling and moisturising skin with aloe vera and mint extract. Prime your canvas Some of us can get away without a primer during winter, but that changes once spring sets in. Warmer weather means your makeup is more likely to melt and slide, so you’ll need a little something extra to ensure its longevity. A primer makes foundation application more even, it makes it last longer and it blurs pores and imperfections. wet n wild’s award-winning Primer Face Focus Serum (R169.95) creates the perfect canvas for a smooth, hydrated and even complexion, allowing your foundation to glide on effortlessly for a luminous, flawless finish. Also new, is the limited edition wet n wild Blooming Face Mist (R129.95). This

Protect and repair – right down to the DNA level – with Lamelle Research Laboratories Nourish

We all know that sun exposure is bad news for our skin. It causes lines and wrinkles. It’s the fast track to sagging skin. It’s a free pass to pigmentation. You get it. We know you get it. But did you know that the sun also damages your DNA? (But here’s a spoiler alert for you – Lamelle’s Nourish range will help you prevent and repair that. Phew!) Not so fun in the sun When anything wreaks havoc on your DNA, this injury is referred to as a “dimer” and the sun can cause them in two ways. The first, known as “direct damage”, is caused when the UV rays directly penetrate your skin. The second type of damage – “indirect damage” – is more insidious. In this case, the sun’s energy causes the molecules in your cells’ nucleus to morph into free radicals. These unstable atoms, if left unchecked, can cause cell destruction, premature ageing and even dread diseases like cancer. We call this indirect damage because, in this instance, the sun isn’t directly destroying your skin, but triggering a dangerous reaction that most certainly will. You should also know that the sun isn’t the only culprit when it comes to the creation of free radicals. Pollution, smoking and even your own body in several conditions, be it a stressful time or exercising too much or too little, can all lead to the production of these potentially deadly molecules. Protect and repair  Knowing that sun damage and free radicals are very bad news for your skin, Lamelle Research Laboratories have created our bestselling Nourish collection to prevent the signs of ageing while protecting your skin from the damage that contributes to it. To protect your skin from the sun’s direct damage, you can rely on Nourish Multi-Active Sun 30, a hydrating sunscreen that can be worn in place of a moisturiser if you have an oilier skin type or layered over either of the Nourish day creams if you’re more on the dry side. Then, to take care of indirect damage, our moisturisers contain OGG-1, a form of photolyase with the ability to find and correct dimers. Better yet, this enzyme works fast, correcting up to 94% of damage within just 6 hours of application! Don’t let free radicals live rent free So, that’s dimers taken care of. But what about those pesky free radicals? Happily, our Nourish line, including the sunscreen, is jam-packed with potent and proven free radical slayers that mop up these unstable atoms like a sponge. One is Pycnogenol, a potent antioxidant derived from French Maritime Pine Bark. It protects your skin’s collagen and elastin, calms inflammation and increases your body’s natural hyaluronic acid (HA) content. (HA is a mega-moisturising water-binding molecule and a must for hydrated, plump-looking skin.)  The Nourish collection’s other heavyweight antioxidant is astaxanthin, a keto-carotenoid derived from Green Algae. It’s superpower is the ability to share multiple electrons, allowing it to neutralise a multitude of free radicals at once. It also bolsters your own army by protecting your skin’s first-line antioxidants and assists with their release. But that’s not all! It also lowers your MMP production rate (enzyme’s that can damage your collagen if they’re over expressed), calms inflammation and even boost your skin’s immune system.  The bottom line When it comes to taking the very best care of your skin, don’t mess around with anti-ageing skincare products that only treat the symptoms of ageing. Protect and repair your skin right down to the DNA level with Nourish by Lamelle Research Laboratories. This cutting-edge collection will unlock your body’s most powerful anti-aging strategies so you can confidently put your best face forward today, knowing your skin will also be taken care of in the future.

Postmenopausal? Get your comfort back with Lady Prelox

If you’ve experienced menopause, you’ll know there’s nothing fun about the symptoms. Hot flashes, fatigue, libido shifts, migraines, hair loss and vaginal dryness are just a few of the many ways this “change of life” can push you out of your comfort zone. For much of this, you have falling estrogen levels to thank – something that will peak in your mid to late 20s and then have declined, on average, by 50% by the age of 50. As a result, many women look forward to the day they’re post-menopausal. At this point, a lot of these symptoms should ease up or go away. (Oh, the joy of leaving the house without migraine meds and a mini fan!) However, many still experience lingering, bothersome symptoms including hot flashes and vaginal dryness. The latter can be accompanied by itching so it’s often mistaken for thrush, sparking a journey of incorrect remedies that offer no relief. Also, a loss of lubrication paired with thinning tissues can result in painful fissures that make it uncomfortable to urinate, exercise or simply sit down. Get your comfort back The picture we’ve painted isn’t pretty. But it’s good to know what you’re dealing with and even more important to realise you don’t have to give up on feeling comfortable. Lady Prelox is a clinically-developed oestrogen-free supplement proven to mitigate many of the symptoms that plague postmenopausal women, including vaginal dryness. It contains the super antioxidant Pycnogenol, a French Maritime Pine Bark Extract. Studies have also shown its anti-inflammatory and free radical-fighting effects can significantly improve a laundry list of postmenopausal symptoms, including hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, fatigue, brain fog, breast tenderness, the sensation of pain related to headaches and vaginal dryness. How does it work? Pycnogenol is clinically proven to boost your blood circulation, including mucosal microcirculation. During trials, 60% of women saw an improvement in post-menopausal symptoms, including vaginal dryness, in as little as four weeks. After two months, this astounding stat shot up to 78%! Lady Prelox also contains L-Citrulline and L-Arginine, two amino acids that work in synergy to increase circulation-boosting nitric oxide production.Clinical studies have shown that increasing your body’s nitric oxide production plays an important role in mediating hot flashes and goes a long way towards protecting your cardiovascular health. (If you didn’t know, oestrogen withdrawal has a negative effect on cardiovascular function, making menopause a risk factor for cardiovascular disease, so this is a time to be extra vigilant about your heart health.) The bottom line The postmenopausal stage of life, despite being a very natural one, can be an uncomfortable phase – but it doesn’t have to be. With Lady Prelox, all it takes is just two pills a day to improve many of the most bothersome postmenopausal symptoms, including hot flashes and vaginal dryness. And yes, there’s that brilliant bonus of improved cardiovascular health. So, what are you waiting for? Consider Lady Prelox and you could be one of the thousands of women who’ve relied on it to get their comfort back! www.preloxrange.co.za

Introducing NEW Correctives AHA re-texture solution

Reveal instantly smoother, more radiant skin and target congested pores – for combination and oily skin types Regular exfoliation will always be one of the key pillars of healthy, youthful-looking skin. But, as it turns out, you can get too much of a good thing. Using a very abrasive, grainy scrub can aggravate existing acne; causing the type of inflammation that sees it thrive and can even create micro-tears in your skin. Fortunately, a chemical exfoliator containing a potent and proven alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) like glycolic acid can help you speed up your skin’s cellular turnover – and serve up other great benefits too! Gently does it  NEW Correctives AHA re-texture solution by Lamelle Research Laboratories, available in a concentration of 5% AHA as well as 8% AHA, is an extremely effective yet very gentle way to shift dead, dry, superficial skin cells. Formulated for those with combination or oily skin, it reveals instantly smoother, brighter-looking, more evenly toned complexion. It also helps keep pores free of debris and excess oil – a plus for those struggling with congested skin. Still, the benefits don’t stop there. Many acids can help renew your skin’s surface but extensive research reveals that multi-tasking glycolic acid always goes the extra mile, stimulating your skin to produce more of its own collagen while increasing hydration. AHA aside, our brilliant new solution also contains Purslane extract, a super soothing succulent-derived botanical extract prized for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and hydrating benefits.  Take your pick  Both of our Correctives AHA re-texture solutions can be used daily or intermittently. The 5% AHA formula is a good choice for anyone who’s just stepping their toes into the AHA product arena. It can be used every second or third night before switching to every night once you know your skin can tolerate it. The 8% AHA formulation is a top pick for those accustomed to using AHAs. To include either solution in your skincare routine, simply massage it to clean dry skin and, once it’s absorbed you can continue to apply your moisturiser. (Another great thing about AHA products is that they can help enhance the absorption of all your other active ingredients.) Just a word of caution, especially for those new to using AHAs – glycolic acid can increase your skin’s sensitivity to the sun – and not just on the day’s your wear it, but for up to a week after discontinuing use. In short, don’t ever skip out on applying sunscreen. Ready to glow  If you’ve got a combination or oily skin type and would like to enjoy a smoother, more youthful-looking and radiant complexion, including Lamelle Correctives AHA re-texture solution in your skincare routine is a brilliant way to get glowing. Flaunt Healthy Radiant Hair with tips from SOiL Aromatherapy: Essential Oil Hair Care from the Comfort of your own Home

Lustrous locks are healthy radiant hair that shines and bounces with you throughout the long day. Prevent bad hair days and avoid expensive salon treatments by ensuring the overall wellness of your hair and scalp using your own affordable apothecary of natural, organic essential oils to promote hair growth and nurse damaged strands back to healthy all-day lustre and glow. Essential oils fortify hair tissues, increase blood circulation and stimulate hair follicles so you can have soft, flowing mermaid hair throughout every season. Let’s look at some of the best essential oils for you to include in your personal daily haircare routine from the comfort of your own home. HAIR GROWTH Scientific studies show essential oils have properties that generate growth of hair and scalp cells. Choose your preferred essential oil below or combine them into a personal recipe for healthy hair regeneration and growth. Lavender essential oil contains antimicrobial and antibacterial properties to improve scalp health, generate cell growth and reduce stress. Mix 15-20 drops of lavender oil into 2-3 tablespoons of jojoba, hemp seed or apricot kernel carrier oil, and apply directly to your scalp. Leave it in for at least 10 minutes before washing it out and shampooing normally.  Repeat several times a week and give your head the boost it needs. Peppermint essential oil produces a tingling feeling as circulation is increased, boosting your hair during the growth phase. Thyme essential oil, one of the stronger essential oils in the family, promotes hair growth while actively preventing hair loss. Rosemary essential oil stimulates the roots and scalp and improves hair growth naturally. STRENGTH & THICKNESS Conditioning the shafts of your hair helps to reduce friction and results in less breakages. If you have long hair, wrap your hair up in a silk scarf before going to sleep at night to prevent further chafing and damage. Clary sage essential oil contains the same linalyl acetate that makes lavender oil so effective in increasing hair growth, improving hair strength and making it more difficult to break. Mix 9 drops of clary sage oil with your conditioner, or with 1 tablespoon of carrier oil. Leave on for 10 minutes before rinsing. Cedarwood essential oil balances the oil-producing glands in the scalp and boosts your hair to become your best-looking feature. Mix a few drops together with your favourite carrier oil, rub between your palms and gently massage it into your scalp for a glossy, aromatic start to your day. Rose Geranium essential oil repairs and nourishes your hair from the inside out using antioxidants to fight free radicals that can accumulate in the hair cells from exposure to pollution, harsh sun and hair treatment chemicals. REPAIR AND NOURISH Modern day stresses and environmental conditions can lead to itchy scalps and embarrassing dandruff build up, and a combination of dry hair and greasy scalp. Here’s the 101 in hair care with SOiL’s essential hair care range. Lemongrass essential oil promotes healthy scalp care, helping to ward off dandruff and can be used daily. Tea tree essential oil is a powerful antibacterial and antimicrobial oil which you can massage directly onto your scalp to unplug hair follicles and boost hair growth. It is also effective against head lice for school-going children. Mix a few drops of essential oil with a natural carrier oil from SOiL or add a few drops to your shampoo or conditioner for the best hair health for your scalp needs. Ylang Ylang essential oil is ideal for dry scalps, helping to stimulate sebum production which improves the texture of your hair. Mix 5 drops of essential ylang-ylang oilwith 2 tablespoons of warm oil. Massage it into your scalp and wrap your head with a warm towel, leaving it for 30 minutes before rinsing out. Never add pure essential oils directly to your scalp, first blend it with a carrier oil or add a touch of luxury to your everyday shampoo. Rose Geranium essential oil is high in antioxidants to nourish hair and act as a barrier to free radicals, so your hair looks radiant and luxurious. Apply it to your head to nourish, tone and feed hair follicles. Simply add a few drops to your current shampoo and conditioner to leave your hair beautifully shiny and healthy each day. SHINE & SOFTNESS Take time to show your crowning head of hair some tender loving care and get the results you need to shine. Our favourite essential carrier oils to use with your SOiL essential oil remedies include Apricot kernel for added moisture, Jojoba oil for added nutrients, Argan oil to nourish and add antioxidants, Hemp Seed oil to strengthen hair and stimulate hair growth and Shea Butter to nourish and condition. Incorporate the following essential oils into your daily hair care routine or set aside a beauty day of the week to apply a treatment for your best hair yet! Chamomile essential oil adds shine and softness to your hair, soothing your scalp and your mood. Ylang Ylang essential oil hydrates and treats dry brittle hair, helping to boost the texture. Sandalwood oil nourishes those long dry ends at the end of your hair shaft while delivering a beautiful fragrance. A Word of Warning The biggest risk of essential oils is skin irritation or allergic reactions. Always use a carrier oil to dilute essential oils. Test a small amount on your skin before applying and be aware of skin irritation, burning and redness. Allergic reactions to essential oils include blistering rashes, difficulty breathing, swelling of the tongue and narrowing of the throat. Use a lower concentration when applying essential oils to children’s hair. Beauty essentials for every kind of woman

As women, we are diverse when it comes to our beauty routines. Some of us spend hours getting ready, while others only need a few minutes. Sometimes we need plenty of products and tools in order to feel our best, and other times we feel confident without having done any grooming at all. All of us have unique beauty needs, but regardless of your regime, there are some products that all women can benefit from – even if you’re really low maintenance! Here’s a breakdown of the beauty products all women should have in their arsenal: Dry shampoo Have you ever said no to a last-minute invitation because you haven’t washed your hair? You wouldn’t be alone – many women schedule social events around their hair wash cycle, and with good reason. Washing, conditioning and drying one’s hair is time-consuming, and most of us do not do it every day. Dry shampoo is an essential every woman should keep in her bathroom. It allows you to extend the length between washes by another day, and it’s a lifesaver when you’re running late or need to make an unexpected appearance somewhere. COLAB Dry Shampoo (R99.99) leaves hair feeling and looking refreshed without any white or powdery residue. It soaks up grease and leaves hair beautifully fragrant. Hair perfume While the majority of women cannot resist a beautiful perfume, not everyone enjoys a strong scent on their skin. The alternative is to spray perfume onto your hair, but the high alcohol content can be drying and damaging. The answer? Delicately-formulated hair perfume! Made with ingredients that are gentle on the hair but leave a beautiful trail of scent, hair perfume is suitable for every woman, regardless of hair type, and is great to carry in your handbag for use throughout the day. Curls In Bloom Hair Perfume (R99.95) has a light and nourishing formula infused with botanical ingredients. It delicately scents the hair with green apples, lily of the valley and sandalwood, and the formulation fights frizz, leaving hair soft and nourished throughout the day. Basic makeup items We say “basic” because we know that not everyone likes to wear a lot of makeup. Many women prefer to keep it natural, only using a few makeup products from time to time. Whether you want a boost of confidence for a meeting, or you want to accentuate your best features, investing in a handful of key makeup items means you can polish off your look whenever the need strikes. No woman can go wrong with mascara. No matter what your hair colour, complexion or overall style preferences, black mascara is flattering on everyone. It “opens” the eyes by lifting the top lash line and accentuates the length and volume of lashes. wet n wild Big Poppa Mascara  (R169.95) delivers outrageous volume, length and lift. Infused with castor oil, this dramatically lengthening and intensely black mascara makes even the shyest of lashes stand out. A basic black eye pencil and eyeshadow palette are a must-have in every makeup kit. A versatile pencil allows you to create a cat eye, smokey eye, a trendy wing or just a thin line for definition. Try wet n wild MegaLast Breakup-Proof Retractable Eyeliner in Black (R74.95). Lightweight, comfortable, and long-lasting, it applies onto the lids smoothly without tugging or pulling the delicate eye area. An eyeshadow palette makes eyeshadow application super easy as it pairs complementary colours together. A palette containing both matte neutral shades as well as a few shimmery shades ensures you’re covered for any occasion. We love wet n wild’s 10 Pan Eyeshadow Palette in Lights Off (R179.95). It features high-impact colours in matte, satin, shimmer and metallic finishes and the rich pigment and high payoff formula blends effortlessly with a soft glide application. And last but not least, let’s not forget the lips. Keeping a couple of liquid lipstick shades in your kit will ensure you’re prepared for any occasion. wet n wild MegaLast Liquid Catsuit Hi Shine Lipstick (R119.95) combines the comfort and shine of a gloss with the high pigment of a lipstick, giving your lips brilliant, high-shine and ultra-pigmented lip lacquer to deliver a mirror-like gloss finish. Makeup tools Whether you apply makeup every day or only on special occasions, every woman should own a good set of tools to ensure flawless application. While there are a lot of different makeup brushes and sponges on the market, you only need a few to cover standard day-to-day makeup looks. We recommend investing in a makeup brush set like Real Techniques Everyday Essentials Set (R650.00). This set includes four brushes (a blush brush for cheeks, a crease brush for eyelids, a setting brush for powder and an expert face brush for foundation) and an egg-shaped makeup sponge with a point tip at the bottom and angular, planar portion at the top. Makeup sponge fans will love the Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge (from R129.95). Its flat edge allows you to contour around the eyes and nose and its sides blend large areas of the face. You can use it damp or dry with liquid foundation for a beautiful finish. Nail colour Well-groomed nails instantly give you an overall polished look. Whether you prefer neutrals, bright colours or pretty pastels, wearing nail colours is for everyone! Those who have a steady hand and enjoy painting their own nails will love wet n wild’s Wild Shine Nail Colors (R37.95). Fast drying, the formulas have a high shine finish and are available in a wide variety of bright, nude, pastel and glitter shades. If you don’t enjoy painting your nails but you love the look of a fresh manicure, then Kiss ImPress Press-On Manicure is for you. These gel nails look and feel like your natural nails, with no glue needed – simply press on and go! They are safe to use on natural nails, chip and smudge proof, and offer hassle-free removal. The set includes 30 nails, a prep pad, a file, and a

Why protective hairstyles are perfect for the lingering chill

If you’re experiencing the chill, you might want to consider wearing your hair in a protective hairstyle. Protective hairstyles allow you to shield your hair from cold weather, preserving its moisture content and protecting it from damage. Cold weather can be drying for textured hair, as the wind and low humidity can dehydrate curls and lead to breakage. Protective styles like box braids, cornrows and Bantu knots preserve natural hair by limiting its exposure to the elements.  Try one of these protective hairstyles to ensure your hair healthy and happy in the lead up to summer: Box braids Box braids are one of the most popular protective hairstyles, and with good reason! They’re low-maintenance, extremely versatile and suitable for any length of hair. Box braids are characterised by square or triangle-shaped hair divisions (also known as boxes). This style doesn’t require a lot of maintenance but using a few key products will ensure your hair and scalp stays healthy. We recommend cleansing hair with a gentle co-wash or shampoo regularly. The newly launched The Perfect Hair Grow on the Go Waterless Cleanser (R99.95) cleanses, refreshes and soothes hair and scalp. It is specially formulated for curls and coils and is enriched with Peppermint Oil and Rosemary. To keep your moisture levels up, spritz a mist like Cantu’s Shea Butter Coconut Oil Shine & Hold Mist (R215.00) or apply a lightweight oil to soothe your scalp Cantu Tea Tree & Jojoba Scalp Oil (R175.00), daily. Bantu knots Bantu knots are as trendy as they are practical. When preparing this style, apply an oil spray to the scalp and hair to nourish, protect and stimulate hair growth. We recommend Jamaican Mango & Lime Black Castor Oil Argan Oil (R99.99). Follow with a leave-in conditioner like Shea Moisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil Leave in Conditioner (R150.00). It can be applied to each section from root to tip. Once your Bantu knots are secured, we recommend applying a leave-in hair treatment for added moisture. Try Cantu Avocado Coconut Curling Cream (R219.95). It smooths hair and enhances your natural curl pattern to produce frizz-free volume.  Cornrows A popular style for both men and women, cornrows protect hair and look great, but when they’re in, you’ll need to give your hair plenty of moisture to keep them looking good for longer and to maintain the health of your scalp. Before you start braiding, be sure to give your hair a good (but gentle) brush to ensure there are no knots or tangles. The Evolve Flow Thru Detangler (R59.95) gently detangles and smoothes hair without snagging or pulling. It gently removes tangles without tearing, ripping, or breaking the hair. We recommend applying a leave-in conditioner to lock in moisture and protect your hair before you start braiding. Try Umberto Giannini Banana Butter Repair and Restore Leave-In Conditioner (R150.00). This silicone-free repairing and moisturising leave-in conditioner is your wonder product to repair, strengthen and de-frizz naturally curly and super curly hair without weighing it down.  Once your cornrows are in place, you’ll need to moisturise your hair and scalp regularly to ensure its health. We recommend applying an oil between the cornrows and against the scalp to keep the scalp moisturised. Try Curls in Bloom Strengthen Me! Hair Oil (R89.95) to seal in moisture and nourish the scalp with castor oil, ylang ylang and lemongrass oils.  Pineapple updo One of the easiest protective hairstyles to create, and one of the most flattering, the pineapple updo involves hair being gathered on top of your head (imagine you are about to tie it up in a high ponytail) and then it is secured with a scrunchie or hair band. Simple but effective, the pineapple updo looks great for work, for home, or for an event. You can mix yours up by playing around with your curls (some women like to tease their curls for high volume). Cantu Avocado Styling Gel (R149.95) is the perfect product to smooth your hair down at the base of your head and keep it in place. Apply The Perfect Hair Mango & Marula Moisturizing Leave-In Butter (R99.95) to your pineapple updo daily to keep your curls hydrated and soft. This rich leave-in styling butter is enriched with mango and marula extracts for 24-hour moisture and curl retention.  Crochet braiding A braided hairstyle, this look is achieved by looping synthetic hair extensions through one’s natural hair with a crochet needle. Stylish and versatile, crochet braids offer a variety of style options as you can wear them both long and short. Crochet braids should remain intact for around four weeks, but during that time you’ll need to take care when washing, as rubbing or tugging could lead to the braids coming undone. We recommend using a co-wash for your lengths and a spray bottle containing watered-down shampoo for the scalp. Cantu Shea Butter for Natural Hair Complete Conditioning Co-Wash (R215.00) or Perfect Hair Grow on the Go Waterless Cleanser (R99.95) are good options. Once you’ve rinsed the shampoo / co-wash from your hair, spray your scalp with a leave-in treatment product like Nilotiqa Shea & Coco Anti-Itch Hair & Scalp Spray (R99.99). Rich and creamy, it provides natural hair with optimum moisture from the root. Add a moisturiser to the lengths of your hair like Cantu’s Shea Butter Daily Oil Moisturizer (R175.00), which uses the nourishing power of shea butter to help replenish lost moisture in dry and damaged hair.

The Evolution of the Eyebrow Brings Empowered Trends & Entrepreneurship for Today’s Modern Women

Sitting in first position on your face, eyebrows have defined our beauty and prowess throughout the centuries. The most powerful and alluring personalities in history feature beautiful brows from their positions of influence. Think of the iconic Cleopatra, sultry Elizabeth Taylor, the intensely creative Frida Kahlo, to today’s A-listers Queen Bey, Amandla Stenberg and Emilia Clarke. Trailblazers in both fashion and personal style, eyebrows have witnessed an evolution of being plucked, thinned, contoured, sculpted, fluffed, threaded, shaped and arched, making the hair-defined eyebrow line the benchmark in creative self-expression. In the 21st Century, the art of the eyebrow remains an evolving modern aesthetic in service of communication and feminine influence.  Why has eyebrow beautification continued to hold our attention over the eons? They are the facial blueprint of who we are and what we feel. They hold the power to change our face, bringing out our best features and correcting and balancing the imperfections, be it small eyes, a long face or eyes set too far apart. Eyebrow design adds definition and presents a confident look to the world, and no one knows this to better effect than Unaiza Suliman of UniQbrow.  Top Beautified Brow Trends in 2022 & Beyond In the business of beauty, award-winning entrepreneur Unaiza brings quick and affordable brow and lash design into the brow revolution mix with a global standard of excellence. Underscoring her expert understanding of the world of aesthetics and somatology, UniQBrow and lash growth serum products enhance her brow empire and, as a master trainer, Unaiza uses her skills to create engaging online courses that can be accessed from anywhere around the world to upskill professionals in the beauty industry.  Heralding in a new high-browed fashion season, she gives us an inside look at the current trends ahead: Au Naturel: Put down the tweezers, says Unaiza, simple and minimal brow work is the way to go. “I love a clean, beautiful brow that is simultaneously unstructured and natural. I’ve never been a fan of the overly defined brow and we’re now emerging into an era where priorities are being redefined too. While grooming will always be a priority, this season we’re embracing a more sophisticated yet natural look for your brows and this is an unquestionable winner.” Art of the Brow: Brow lamination provides a defined look that must be applied by a certified professional, to deliver a perfectly placed brushed up fuller look that lasts for months.  Providing an  illusion of beautiful fullness while maintaining an “unstructured,” look, this trend mimics a brow “lift,” without the pigment of microblading. As the world of brows keeps evolving, Unaiza has added a UniQBrow eyebrow jam, a slight evolution of the brow gel, to create the laminated effect so complimentary for fuller, thicker looking brows that last throughout the day.  Bush Baby: Think fluffy brows with no pencilling and minimal maintenance. All you need is a clean, damp spoolie brush run very lightly through your soap; followed by brushing, up, out and down in the direction of your brow growth. Bring on your Brow Game: Feather brows are in, defined using a spoolie to create definition and to flick the brows out for a lightweight airy look. Barely There:  Bleached eyebrows make a major statement right now especially on the catwalks and provide a light and versatile look in the fashion scene. Bro Fix: Eyebrow transplants are here to help increase brow fullness. When yours have all been plucked off, hair taken from the back of the head helps to replace a distinctive brow line. Classic Cool: In a return to the classic Audrey Hepburn look, the straight brow is back featuring a minimal arch and a straighter brow tail. Slay them with Play: Coloured brows are fun and add a feel of play to the day. Simply add a pop of colour with your makeup and match the glamour of your outfit. Skinny 90’s: The sleek eyebrow is seeing a comeback featuring a low arch and slimline look for formal sophistication. How will you define your brow look this season and what do your brows say about you?  Uplevel Yourself in the Business of Beauty Unaiza is not only passionate about brow beauty, but she is also intent on empowering other women as she continues building and expanding her UniQBrow business brand through training and inspiring women with no prior beauty or business experience through her distinctive franchise opportunity.  “I want to see other women grow beyond what they thought possible. My franchise opportunity lowers the barrier to entry for women, allowing them to either establish their own business, or expand their service offering, with minimal capital outlay, unlike any other franchising opportunity in the beauty industry.” Designed for select women who might never have laid a finger on a brow, Uniq Brow is serious about cultivating exceptional craftsmanship with a focus on speciality, allowing new Brow Queens a franchising opportunity in the beauty industry. “It’s about giving someone a chance…a chance to start and then a chance to build and grow from strength to strength. This is what I want to see,” says Unaiza, “an empowered army of women standing strong in who they are.” Become a Brow Queen today or get busy defining your brows to the latest trends with Uniq Brow Jams that are vegan friendly, cruelty-free and available for order from the Uniq Brows online store https://uniqbrows.com/shop/ amongst a host of other world-class products for your browsing pleasure.  www.uniqbrows.com info@uniqbows.com Tel +27 84 786 0671 Facebook: @UniqBrowsbyunaiza Instagram: @uniqbrowsbyunaiza

Lamelle Research Laboratories

Lamelle Correctives HA+ Serum: Our most innovative hyaluronic acid serum

If you’re serious about skincare, chances are you’ve got a mega-moisturising hyaluronic acid serum (also referred to as HA) in your artillery. Still, it’s hard to believe there once was a time when few had even heard of it and many assumed it was an exfoliator. Thing is, HA isn’t acidic at all. In fact, it helps to replenish your skin with much-appreciated hydration, making it a must for every skin type and especially those that have dry skin. This is why Lamelle Correctives HA+ Serum is such a loved and lauded product. However, there are many more reasons as to why it’s a hydrator above all others and we’ll get to that in a bit – but first – for those still unfamiliar with the skincare superstar, let’s get you up to speed fast. Why HA is here to stay   HA is a water-binding, lubricating molecule that occurs naturally in your body. Much of it resides in your skin where its job is to help it retain moisture. As it’s able to attract and hold up to a thousand times its weight in water – and then hold it deep within your skin – it does this extremely well. The result? Happy, hydrated skin that looks younger thanks to a plumping effect that can obliterate fine dehydration lines and soften the look of wrinkles. More good news? Research suggests that HA has antioxidant properties that can help mitigate the effects of sun damage. Not all HA serums are created equally Now that the world’s woken up to this moisture magnet’s seemingly miraculous ability to hydrate and plump, you’ll be spoiled for choice when it comes to finding an HA-infused skincare product. Thing is, not all of them are created equally. As an example, some might only contain the teensiest smidge of HA and most will only contain one particular type. This is where Lamelle Correctives HA+ Serum gets to shine. Thanks to years of research, we’ve created the most innovative HA product in the world – one that contains five different types of HA to help hydrate your skin on multiple levels. Ready to break it down? Cross-linked HA hydrates the surface of the skin  Hydrolysed HA penetrates the deeper layers  Acetyl HA lingers longer, for continued hydration over a longer period Phyto HA helps retain hydration by reducing water loss through the skin Lucky number five As for our fifth type of HA, it’s a bit of an overachiever. Say hello to HAFi fragments, a range of very specifically sized HA particles that stimulate your skin to make even more of your own natural HA. This is great because your skin’s natural HA content starts to dwindle as you age. (You can also speed up this process if you’re a smoker, skip out on sun protection and don’t protect your skin from the scourge of cell-damaging free radicals.) Also, as an added bonus, HAFi fragments help speed up your skin’s natural healing and cellular turnover process by regulating inflammation. But wait – there’s more! Thought we were done? Nope. Here’s the thing that makes Lamelle Correctives HA+ Serum one of the most innovative in the world – it’s the first skincare product to contain TWO hyaluronidase inhibitors! Why is this a big deal? Hyaluronidase are enzymes that occur naturally in your body; increase with age and degrade the HA content in your skin. Keeping them in check is a must if you’re on a quest to enjoy hydrated, firm and plump-feeling skin for as long as possible.  Clearly, everyone can do with an HA serum in their skincare routine. But it’s only our Corrective HA+ Serum that, serves up a multi-pronged approach to hydration, the stimulation and protection of your own natural HA plus the ability to reverse the effects of ageing and sun damage. So, why settle for anything less when Lamelle has created the best?

Why fruits and vitamins are the skincare ingredients of the moment

Like our bodies, our skin needs plenty of nutrients to look and feel its best. Scientists continually find new sources from which to extract these nutrients for our skincare products. But other than laboratory-created ingredients, where do our skincare ingredients come from? Nutritional skincare ingredients are extracted from plants, flowers, seeds and nuts, herbs, spices and even fruit! And while you might not think “skincare” when you see an orange, grapefruit or pineapple, these are popularly used in skincare formulations because of their nutritional content.  Fruits are also packed with vitamins, another popular addition to skincare products. As much as vitamins feed and nourish our bodies, they also feed and nourish our skin.  We take a closer look at a few star ingredients you should be incorporating in your daily skincare regime: Pineapple When it comes to skincare, the word “pineapple” is usually closely followed by the word “enzyme.” That’s because pineapples are rich in bromelain, a group of enzymes that have the ability to gently, yet effectively, exfoliate the skin. Bromelain has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial benefits, which makes pineapple good at reducing swelling and redness in breakouts. These enzymes slough away dead skin cells and reduce the appearance of blackheads without irritating the skin.  Pineapple-rich products to try: *new* wet n wild Prime Focus Brightening Primer Serum (R219.95) This water-based primer serum boosts your skin’s radiance as it preps and primes it for makeup. Formulated with a luxurious blend of pineapple, calendula, and other flower and fruit extracts that help to brighten, refine, and condition the skin, this face serum will leave you feeling positively radiant. *new* wet n wild Prime Focus Pore Minimizing Primer Serum (R219.95) This water-based pore-refining primer serum blurs and softens the appearance skin as it preps and primes it for makeup. It reduces the appearance or pores with the help of Bakuchiol, a natural retinol alternative known to improve skin texture, as well as other naturally-derived ingredients like antioxidant-rich dragonfruit extract, lavender extract, pineapple and calendula. Grapefruit Grapefruit is a popular breakfast fruit and boasts an amazing array of health benefits. Not only is it high in vitamin C, but it contains fibre, is high in antioxidants, helps promote a healthy body weight and is good for the heart. When utilised in skincare, grapefruit has the ability to tone the skin, balance oily or acne-prone skins and brighten dull or uneven complexions. Grapefruit is packed with antioxidants, which help combat harmful free radicals (naturally-occurring in pollution and sunlight) that can lead to premature ageing and skin damage.  Grapefruit-rich products to try: Creightons Pink Grapefruit Face Wash (R69.95) This refreshing cleanser effectively removes dirt and impurities while invigorating the skin to help encourage a fresh, healthy looking complexion. Creightons Pink Grapefruit Face Scrub (R69.95) Gently exfoliate and unclog pores with this face scrub to help promote a brighter, more radiant complexion. Papaya Papaya contains powerful anti-inflammatory enzymes that help promote healing, and is also full of antioxidants. Papain, an enzyme present in papaya, is known to help soothe skin irritations and its strong anti-inflammatory properties makes it an ideal ingredient for blemish-prone skin. Like the enzymes present in pineapples, papaya enzymes gently exfoliate skin, effectively removing dead skin cells and flaky patches to reveal a brighter complexion.  Papaya-rich products to try: Creightons Vitamin C Superfruits Skin Radiance Moisturiser (R89.95) Working to enhance skin’s natural radiance, this moisturiser promotes a brighter, healthier-looking complexion. Formulated with vitamin C, natural fruit acids and enzymes, this skin-lovingformula is lightweight and refreshing. Creightons Vitamin C Superfruits 2% Bright Eye Serum (R115.95)  This is a lightweight eye cream fortified with vitamin C, natural fruit acids and enzymes, to rejuvenate and replenish the under eye area as well as minimise the appearance of dark circles. Vitamin C Renowned for its ability to boost our immune systems and general wellbeing, vitamin C is a skincare ingredient you do not want to be without. Also known as Ascorbic Acid, vitamin C is one of the most powerful antioxidants. It protects our skin from environmental extremities such as pollution and blue light from cellphones, tablets and computers. It is also a brilliant pigmentation fighter. Vitamin C helps to inhibit the enzyme tyrosinase (a catalyst that aids melanin production), thereby helping prevent melanin production, and in turn, prevent hyperpigmentation and dark marks. It has the ability to aid healing in the skin and assists the skin with collagen production.  Vitamin C-rich products to try: *new* wet n wild Take Your Vitamins Super Nutrient Face Mist (R199.95)  Boost your skin with the ultimate vitamin-packed primer water from wet n wild. Blended with the skin-loving ingredients you crave (vitamins C, F, B3 and B5), this primer water acts as the perfect prep for any skincare routine, while helping to hydrate, firm, and brighten the skin. Simply spray it on and enjoy the rejuvenating effects of this ultra-fine mist. NIP+FAB Vitamin C Fix Cleanser (R250.00) Cleanse your way to fresh, glowing skin with the Vitamin C Fix Cleanser. This daily-use gentle cleanser helps to protect skin from everyday environmental pollutants whilst revealing clearer brighter skin. Wash away dirt and impurities and leave skin refreshed and glowing. NIP+FAB Vitamin C Fix Serum (R295.00)  This serum uses a powerhouse of antioxidants to leave skin brightened and refreshed. Vitamin C helps to protect skin against environmental damage and decreases fine lines and wrinkles, whilst acai berry acts as a cooling anti-inflammatory.

How to maintain a healthy skincare regime on a budget

As the cost of living rises, it’s becoming increasingly important to find affordable skincare products that don’t skimp on efficacy. The majority of South Africans are feeling the pinch right now. With fuel prices at an all-time high, food prices increasing by the day and the cost of electricity continuously going up (despite constant loadshedding!), there’s a little too much month at the end of everyone’s money. For a lot of people, this means cutting back on expenses and finding more affordable alternatives for pricey items. For some, it has meant adjusting their beauty routines: from purchasing fewer products to switching over to more affordable brands, women are finding ways to maintain a beauty regime without a hefty price tag. There’s a common belief that if a product is expensive, it has to be good. But what science shows us, is that this is not necessarily true. While some ingredients are innately expensive to produce and ramp up a product’s price tag, it’s not the only factor determining pricing. Marketing budgets, advertising campaigns, packaging and celebrity endorsements all add up, often putting a high cost behind products that would otherwise be more affordable. When we consider how “good” a beauty product is, we should be looking at its ingredients and efficacy in isolation, without taking the other factors into consideration. After all, that’s what it’s really about, right? The same goes for more affordable products: a reasonable price tag does not necessarily mean inferior quality. There are some incredibly effective, top quality ingredients out there that are not expensive, and allow brands to produce affordable skincare products that deliver on their promises. But how can you know which is which? In a beauty industry that’s flooded with product options, we recommend always looking to ingredients first. Do your research and find out which ingredients offer the results you’re after, and then determine which products offer the most bang for your buck. One of the best affordable skincare ingredients on the market is Bramley’s Bio-Pharm Oil, used in their much-loved tissue oils. Bramley’s very own unique ceramide blend, Bio-Pharm Oil, enhances the functionality of the skin’s moisture barrier, keeping moisture locked in. The use of Bio-Pharm Oil gives the tissue oils a modern scientific treatment to maintain the healthy appearance of the skin. The ceramides influence the water-holding capacity of the skin and provide structural integrity. Bramley tissue oils are suitable for all skin types and provide best results when applied daily over a period of time. Bramley’s tissue oils also contain another very affordable and highly effective ingredient – vitamin E. Known for its healing and antioxidant properties, vitamin E also helps skin cells repair, softens skin and protects cells from damage. Bramley’s tissue oils are the number one selling tissue oils is South Africa for a reason: Not only are they highly effective at nourishing, moisturizing and softening the skin, but they are affordable, multipurpose and versatile, meaning you only need to buy one product to cover a variety of needs. In a time when we could all do with a little bit of relief when it comes to spending, Bramley’s tissue oils are the answer to maintaining your beauty regime at an affordable price. Use it on your skin Apply a few drops onto a cotton pad and use it as a makeup remover. Apply to dry and cracked lips to soften and moisturise the skin. It can be applied to the skin to help fade dark marks. Use it on your body It can be used as a massage oil. It can be used to minimise the appearance of scars and stretch marks. Use for cracked heels (apply some onto feet and put socks on before bed). Apply it to your cuticles and nail beds to promote healthy nail growth and softer cuticles. Use it as a bath oil – simply pour a few drops into your bath water. Apply before and after shaving your legs to soothe irritation. Mix some tissue oil into your body lotion or butter and apply all over for silky soft skin. Mix some sugar crystals with tissue oil to make your own body scrub. Use it on your hair Use it as a deep treatment to moisturise and soften hair. Apply to your lash line and eyelashes before bed to help promote longer, healthy lashes. With so many uses, it’s easy to understand why Bramley tissue oils are the number one choice of South Africans.

Tips for longer-lasting fragrance

Have you ever sprayed your favourite perfume, only to find the scent disappeared after a couple of hours? It is common for fragrances with light, fresh notes to disappear faster than fragrances with heavier oriental, floral or woody notes. However, the longevity of your fragrance is not just dependent on its composition – it’s also largely dependent on how you use it. Follow these simple tips to ensure you get the most out of your fragrance and increase its longevity: Know your EDT from your EDP Most fragrances are either an “EDT” – eau de toilette, or an “EDP” – eau de parfum. An eau de toilette typically contains around 8-15% fragrance oil which lasts around 4-6 hours, in comparison to an eau de parfum which typically contains 15-30% fragrance oil and can last up to 8-10 hours. An eau de parfum therefore has a higher concentration of fragrance oil, meaning it will typically last longer on the skin. If you prefer not to reapply your fragrance during the day, then an eau de parfum is your best option, as it typically lasts for most of the day. For him, try: Mercedes Benz Sign Eau de Parfum (R1895.00 for 100ml). A fougere oriental, this fragrance features top notes of cardamom and pink peppercorn, heart notes of aromatic lavender, orange blossom, rose geranium and base notes of tonka bean, white musk and cashmere.  For her, try: Mercedes Benz For Woman Eau De Parfum (R1495.00 for 60ml). It’s an enchanting, luxurious, unexpected fragrance created to accentuate and exalt a woman’s personality with a rich, sophisticated accord composed of sandalwood, vanilla, musk and cashmere woods. Moisturise your skin Moisturised skin holds onto fragrance a lot longer than drier skin. To make your scent last longer, we recommend applying a fragrance-free body lotion all over before you begin spritzing.  Apply your fragrance after a shower The steam from a shower helps open the aroma of your fragrance: When you get out of the shower, your skin and body temperature is high, and heat helps diffuse fragrance. In addition, clean post-shower skin is free from sweat, oil and impurities which can interfere with your fragrance.  Layer your fragrance If you have a shower gel or scented body lotion or oil of the same scent as your fragrance, layering these products will increase the longevity of your fragrance, and may also enhance your fragrance.   Love an uplifting scent? Layer your fragrance with Superdry Re:Vive Body+Hair Wash (R95.99) and Superdry Re:Vive Body Spray (R79.99). Invigorating and zesty, this duo is powered by notes of cardamom and lemon.  Prefer a marine-inspired scent? Try  Superdry’s Pacific Men’s Body+Hair Wash (R95.99) and Pacific Men’s Body Spray (R79.99) features oceanic citrus marine notes and masculine mineral depths for a fresh, marine-inspired scent.  Don’t rub your wrists together If you apply fragrance to your wrists, you may feel an instinctual urge to rub them together, but in doing this, you can make the top notes disappear faster. Not only does this affect the fragrance’s longevity, but it also alters its scent.  Store your fragrance correctly Exposure to light and heat can chemically alter your fragrance. Maintain its scent and longevity by storing your fragrance correctly. Store your fragrance in a cool and dark place. As tempting as it is to keep it on your dressing table, exposure to sunlight and humidity can cause unwanted chemical reactions to occur. We recommend keeping it in its original bottle, in a drawer or cupboard not too close to a bathroom where it can be exposed to steam. Apply to your pulse points Experts recommend applying fragrance to your pulse points as your skin is the thinnest at these points, meaning the veins are closer to the skin, making these areas warmer. Essentially, pulse points are like mini radiators, and heat helps diffuse fragrance. Pulse points are found on the insides of your wrists and elbows, behind your ears, on your neck and the back of your knees. A few spritzes of Rockford Homme Wild Black Eau De Toilette (R425.00 for 100ml) on the wrists is all you need for all-day fragrance. This oriental, warm fragrance features ginger and citrus notes at the top, cinnamon and incense in the heart and leather and amber bottom notes. Don’t spray regular perfume in your hair The temptation to spray perfume in your hair is very real – after all, it holds fragrance longer than skin does. But most fragrances have a high alcohol percentage, and alcohol is dehydrating. Because dryness and dehydration is such a common hair concern, it’s best to avoid spraying your fragrance in your hair. Instead, opt for a hair mist or hair perfume. Formulated without drying alcohol, hair perfume is safe to use and won’t damage or dry your hair. Try Curls In Bloom Hair Perfume (R69.95). A light and nourishing formula that delicately scents the hair with green apples, lily of the valley and sandalwood, it also fights frizz, leaving hair soft and nourished throughout the day.

Whether your hair is naturally curly, coily or wavy, it’s time to ditch the straightener and embrace your natural texture. Reminiscent of the 80s, it’s all about celebrating curls, coils and afros. Filled with the very best ingredients that nature has to offer, The Perfect Hair products are the ideal companion for your natural hair. The Mango & Marula range is specially designed for curly hair, adding and locking in plenty of moisture while nourishing, softening and adding shine. Try the Mango & Marula Silky Soft Shampoo (R100.00) and Detangling Deep Conditioner(R100.00) for an intense moisture boost. Copper brunette The inspo: Zendaya and Kendall Jenner Also referred to as “luxury copper”, this is the hottest hair colour of the season, and finally, it’s a colour totally attainable by brunettes! Warm and full-bodied, the colour is rich and luxurious – just what the chilly season calls for. Prolong the life of your copper colour and maintain its vibrancy with Marc Anthony Complete Color Care nourishing Hair Mask (R189.95), a nourishing hair mask that reduces colour fade, locking in nutrients and protecting against environmental damage, and Marc Anthony Complete Color Care Colour Bond Instant Colour Sealer (R179.95), a treatment products that seals the cuticles to lock in moisture, adds shine and prevents colour fade.  Fringe benefits The inspo: Zoë Kravitz and Dua Lipa Fringes or bangs are a hit every winter, likely because they’re more manageable in colder weather. The two most popular fringe styles this winter are the blunt bang (straight-cut and thick) and the French fringe, a soft cut with rounded, textured ends that blend with the rest of your haircut. This colour won’t require a lot of maintenance, but you’ll need to switch up your hair care regime to ensure you use colour-protecting products to increase its longevity.  Chances are your fringe will be heat-styled a lot more often than the rest of your hair, so it’s essential to spritz on a product to protect it from heat damage. Try Hask Biotin Boost 5-In-1 Leave-In Spray (R160.00) which thickens and adds body, provides thermal protection, controls frizz, adds shine, prevents breakage, and detangles and moisturises.  Your fringe will also need to be washed more regularly than the rest of your hair. If you’re pressed for time, we recommend a few spritzes of Colab Dry Shampoo (R99.95). Not only does it leave hair looking and feeling fresh (without the dreaded white residue) but dry shampoo is known to add volume, too. Layers The inspo: Lily Collins and Georgia May Jagger 90s-era layers are back with a vengeance. Bouncy and fresh when styled and feminine and soft when left to air dry, this French-inspired style frames the face and adds dimension and texture to your cut. Plus, this is the perfect style for anyone wanting a new look while maintaining the length of their hair. Try OGX Coconut Miracle Oil Air Dry Cream (R215.00). This air-dry cream is ideal for style on the go – simply work through damp hair to reduce frizz as hair dries naturally for beautiful heat-free style. Sleek ponytail The inspo: Bella Hadid A versatile style for straight hair, the sleek ponytail is easy to wear, any time of the day or night. The key to perfecting it, is to use a fine-tooth comb to smooth out any bumps once your hair’s been pulled back. Use a gel or mousse over the top for a smooth finish and to flatten any flyaways. The  Evolve Triple Edge Styler (R129.95) is a must-have for smoothing your hair and taming flyaways. This 3-in-1 pure boar brush can be used for smoothing and styling edges or sleek ponies, the fine-tooth comb can be used for shaping edges and the rat tail can be used to part your hair. Smooth edges and flyaways with Cantu Shea Butter Edge Gel Stay Gel (R150.00). It conditions and smooths frizz and flyaway hair for shiny, sleek styles with a long-lasting, flake-free hold. For a sculpted finish, we recommend applying a little bit of Cantu Shea Butter Styling Gel with Jamaican Black Castor Oil (R110.00). It smoothes frizz, protects against humidity and holds hair in place without it drying or flaking.  The classic bob The inspo: Alexa Chung and Dakota Johnson The great thing about a bob is that it works with just about any hair type and texture. Cool and understated, it’s a youthful and fun hairstyle that never dates. The key to a modern bob is to not over style it, but rather to work with your natural hair texture. If your hair is wavy or curly, embrace the shape to keep it looking somewhat “undone”. If your hair is straight, allow it to air dry to get some movement and prevent it from looking too rigid. For a wavy or curly bob full of volume, we recommend Umberto Giannini Curl Whip Curl Activating Mousse (R150.00). This mousse helps you achieve weightless, flexible, frizz-free curls and waves with extra definition.

6 Simple ways to live greener (and use more Earth-friendly products!)

Let’s face it – even if you’ve implemented greener habits in your home, we can all do more when it comes to protecting the environment. We can all do better at recycling, reusing, supporting local businesses, and making greener choices. Some may argue that in reality, we need major corporations, the public and private sectors as well as government on board for real, transformational change. And while that’s true, we as individuals are not powerless. When united with other like-minded individuals, we can create a movement that is powerful and impactful. While it’s important to support larger initiatives that work with government and corporations to initiate change on a large scale, it’s also important that each and every one of us do our bit to make a positive difference. And guess what? It’s much easier than you might think! What can we do in our day to day lives to make a positive change to the environment?  Recycle Glass, paper, cardboard and aluminium are all recyclable materials. Keep a separate bin in which you throw your empty glass bottles, tins, old newspapers and cardboard packaging, and drop it off at your local recycling depot. Many types of plastics are also recyclable. Check the back of plastic items like milk bottles, toiletry packaging and food packaging. If it has the recycling symbol on it (three arrows pointing towards each other in a triangular shape, also known as the “chasing arrows”), you can add it to your other recyclables.  Choose cruelty-free products Testing household and cosmetic products on animals is cruel and unnecessary. Be part of a positive change by actively supporting cruelty-free brands. Check product packaging for a cruelty-free stamp, Beauty Without Cruelty endorsement or PETA-approved logo. Because the demand has increased, more and more cosmetic companies are going cruelty-free. Whether it’s makeup, skincare or haircare, there is a variety of cruelty-free options available for you to try.   wet n wild prides themselves on offering fantastic quality, cruelty-free makeup products at affordable prices. Every item under the brand is 100% cruelty-free and they are endorsed by PETA. In fact, a lot of their products are vegan too. Shop wet n wild makeup at Clicks online here. For a cruelty-free haircare range rich in high quality botanical ingredients, try Hask. Formulated without nasties like sulphates, parabens, phthalates and gluten, Hask is a favourite among hairstylists on films and TV show sets! Shop Hask haircare at Clicks online here and at Dis-Chem online here.  Cruelty-free skincare on your mind? NIP+FAB offers regime-based skincare solutions and products of purpose to help you achieve your clearest, healthiest and most radiant skin yet. And best of all, they’re cruelty-free and vegan! Shop NIP+FAB skincare on Dis-Chem online here. Support local brands We will always have our favourite international brands that we love and support, but one of the best things you can do for the local economy and the environment, is to support locally-produced products too. Not only does this support local entrepreneurs and drive job creation, but it also means that your products travelled a shorter distance (thus using less fuel!). Local haircare brand  The Perfect Hair was created by a local female entrepreneur, and has grown from a small start-up to a big player in the natural haircare market. Not only are the products filled with nourishing natural ingredients and effective at treating and maintaining healthy hair, but they’re also affordable. Shop The Perfect Hair haircare products at selected Clicks, Spar, Checkers; Pick ‘n Pay & Foschini stores as well as Take-A-Lot. Say no to single use plastic Not all plastics are bad. Many are designed to last. We manufacture furniture, appliances, homeware and industrial products from plastic instead of valuable natural resources. Many types of plastics are recyclable. But one of the biggest challenges facing the planet is single use plastic. This is the type of plastic that gets thrown away after one use. Things like drinking straws, plastic packets and food packaging, that are only used once, or used for a very short period of time, is considered a single use plastic. It takes about 1000 years for plastic to decompose, and every year the world produces around 380 million metric tons of plastic. Limit your use of single use plastic whenever possible. Use a refillable water bottle and fill it at the tap instead of buying water, take fabric bags for shopping, avoid using straws and balloons and choose glass alternatives whenever possible. Embrace vegan options We can’t all follow vegan diets, but we can all do our part to consume less animal products. Start small by introducing “Meat-free Monday” in your home. Try plant-based food alternatives and introduce them into your eating plan gradually. Before you know it, you’ll be consuming a lot less animal products. Next up is cosmetic, personal care and household items – switch to vegan alternatives, it’s a lot simpler than you think. While not all brands are 100% vegan, a lot of them have vegan options within their ranges.  wet n wild has a wide variety of vegan makeup products within their ranges.   Umberto Giannini, an award-winning haircare brand from the UK offers transformational haircare products for every hair type, and you’re in luck, as the entire range is 100% vegan! Now you can get the hair of your dreams without the guilt. Shop Umberto Giannini haircare at Clicks online here. Say yes to sustainability When taking ingredients from nature, it’s important to give back to the environment, to ensure the supply runs strong. Sustainability is key when sourcing natural and organic material. Support brands that do their part to manufacture products containing ethically and sustainably sourced ingredients.  EcoTools manufacture exceptional makeup brushes and sponges from recycled and renewable materials like bamboo and eco-foam. They’re a sustainable alternative to the plastic makeup brushes and synthetic sponges we find on the market. Shop EcoTools at Clicks online here.  And what about botanical ingredients? Curls in Bloom, a local haircare brand, knows a thing or two about two about sustainable ingredient sourcing. They source their precious botanical ingredients from is a small pro-active farming community,

How to brighten blonde hair

Whether you’ve gone platinum, golden, ash or honey blonde, you’re bound to love the effects of your fresh new colour. But while newly-coloured blonde hair looks great, it requires a fair bit of maintenance and TLC to keep it looking that way.  Blonde hair tends to lose its shine and is prone to brassiness and colour fade. The truth is that even when you’re diligent about your blonde hair care routine, dullness and brassiness (when shades of silver or platinum take on a yellowish tinge) can creep in and steal your shine. This is because blonde hair is vulnerable to sun damage, the effects of hard water (tap water that contains colour-stripping minerals like copper and chlorine), pollution and using the wrong hair care products. But while blonde hair may require a bit of maintenance, the reward is truly worth it. Brightening your blonde need not be difficult or stressful – follow these simple tips and product suggestions to enjoy your best blonde yet. Go sulphate-free Sulphates are present in the majority of soaps, shampoos and household cleaning agents. They are responsible for that foamy lather we’ve all come to love, and they are extremely effective at removing dirt and impurities. However, this also makes them very drying on the skin and hair, as they strip moisture along with dirt. This can lead to dehydration, damage and breakage, plus, using sulphate products on coloured hair may also strip the colour. To preserve blonde hair’s moisture, colour and strength, it is essential to go sulphate-free.   Try: Marc Anthony Complete Color CarePurple Shampoo (R179.95) and Conditioner (R179.95) for Blondes & Highlights. Formulated with violet pigments, this duo helps neutralise unwanted brassy tones, while nourishing and providing a boost of moisture to your blonde locks. Embrace purple Purple and violet shampoos are a great choice for blonde hair, as they can neutralise brassy and yellow tones in the hair by colour-correcting them. How? It all comes down to colour science. Purple and yellow are opposite one another on the colour wheel, which means they have the ability to cancel each other out. You know how you’d use a green concealer to cancel out redness on the skin? This essentially works the same way. Try: Pro:Voke Brightening Shampoo Touch of Silver (R130.00) neutralises brassiness and brightens colour in coloured, natural or highlighted platinum, blonde, white, or grey hair with a toning violet pigment. Follow with Pro:Voke Colour Care Conditioner Touch Of Silver (R130.00). Its creamy, protective formula strengthens and helps repair damaged hair by infusing extra moisture for an improved smooth and silky texture. It also contains optical brighteners to instantly boost shine and retain rich hair colour. Correct brassiness As with all things, prevention is better than cure, however, if you are struggling with brassiness, it’s not too late. Invest in colour-correcting products to remove unwanted brassy tones and restore your original colour.  Try: CreightonsSunshine Blonde Silver Intense Brightening Shampoo (R89.95) And Sunshine Blonde Tone Correcting Conditioner (R99.95). These products help correct unwanted brassy tones brought on by sun exposure. Formulated withviolet pigments and UV filters, the shampoo helps brighten your hair from the very first wash.  Rinse with lukewarm water Avoid the temptation to use hot water when shampooing and conditioning your hair. Not only is hot water drying on your skin (think an uncomfortable and flaky scalp!) but it also opens the hair’s cuticles which can result in faster colour fade. Cold water seals the cuticle rather than opening it, which helps preserve colour and increases shine.  Hydrate All hair colours need added hydration in winter, but for blonde hair, it is particularly important to use hydrating or moisturising hair care products. The process of lightening one’s hair can be very drying and sometimes even damaging. That’s why it is essential to replenish moisture with conditioner and hair masks or treatments. Use a generous amount of a nourishing conditioner for blonde hair after every shampoo, and apply a hair mask to strengthen blonde hair at least once a week. Try: Creightons Sunshine Blonde Brightening Silver Treatment Masque (R74.95). Quick and easy to use, this product is formulated with nourishing argan oil and violet pigments to protect and brighten blonde hair, while also repairing damaged hair.  Protect against breakage Because blonde hair is prone to dryness and damage, it is also at risk of breakage. While taking all the necessary steps to preserve your colour, don’t forget to also pay some attention to increasing your hair’s strength and resilience. Gently pat your hair dry with a towel rather than rubbing it dry, as the friction can damage wet strands. Wait for your hair to dry before you brush it as wet hair is vulnerable and can snap easily.  Apply a nourishing hair mask like Marc Anthony Complete Color CareNourishing Hair Mask (R189.95). This mask reduces colour fade while locking in nutrients and protecting against environmental damage. It is rich in fatty acids and castor oil which helps keep your scalp hydrated and nourished, resulting in stronger, shinier, and healthier hair. Follow these simple steps to keep your blonde hair in its best shape yet.

Nilotiqa welcomes a fresh new look

Nilotiqa, a proudly South African hair care brand known for its nourishing, plant-based formulas, has a fresh new look. The local favourite, which celebrates natural hair in all its forms, aims to keep hair as healthy as possible, and offers products suitable for natural hair, hair in protective styles and hair that is undergoing transition.  What can you expect from the new packaging? Inspired by the incredible ingredients sourced in South Africa and Africa, Nilotiqa utilises rich African colours of orange, brown, gold and green in the new packaging. This unique colour combination is bold and unlike anything else you might find on the shelves, making it instantly recognizable. To celebrate the use of African ingredients, the new packaging features the words Shea & Coco written in a free-flowing font, which alludes to the natural ingredients in the products. The products now also feature certification logos on the back, not only to reinforce their efficacy-driven ethos and science-driven claims, but also to offer consumers transparency. The luxurious new packaging is true to the luxurious nature of the products. Keep an eye out for the new-look range on shelves from mid June 2022.  Nilotiqa founder and all-round natural hair care enthusiast, Thokozile Mangwiro, gives us some insight into the brand’s journey thus far: You have an impressive resume, and plenty of corporate experience. What made you decide to leave the corporate world to create your own hair care brand? “Creating Nilotiqa was more of a necessity than just starting a brand. I had struggled with my natural hair, which I started growing from high school, for 14/15 years. While working in corporate, I started looking for solutions for my very dry hair. There were no hair products that were made for my type of hair; products that could nourish and really moisturise my hair.  Noticing that there was a huge gap in the market, I met up with a formulator to start formulating products that would ‘work’ on my hair. This process started in 2014 and in 2016 I launched beautiful products that were so moisturising and really worked! I knew that I had to get these products into as many hands that struggled with dry hair as I did.” Can you tell us a little bit about the process of creating the Nilotiqa brand? “I started researching ingredients that would moisturise my hair, when I quickly realised that raw ingredients were not penetrating my hair strands. I worked with a formulator for about two years to create products that felt and smelled good. I then sourced the packaging (travelling all over JHB to find bottles and lids) and created the label designs myself and found a labelling company to print the labels. I eventually launched Nilotiqa through a Shopify website and registered with a delivery service.” How far into the journey did your partnership with Sunpac come about? “We partnered up with Sunpac a few months before Nilotiqa turned 6. We had been in the retail space for 4 years. The back story to this partnership is that we met Sunpac a year before we partnered up. I would say, the stars had not quiet aligned yet. When we met again a year later, it was definitely perfect timing and the perfect fit for both businesses.” Who is the typical Nilotiqa customer?  “I typically split the Nilotiqa customer into two: a. A busy working mom who loves to give her hair all the TLC, but does not have time to take the whole day for hair wash day. She wants products that work fairly quickly and make her feel amazing without too much effort. b. A very educated consumer, who wants clean ingredients in her products. They do not want chemicals in their products and are aware of #greenbeauty as being part of their regimen.” What sets Nilotiqa apart from other hair care brands? “As black women with natural hair, we’ve all come face to face with the uncomfortable and often embarrassing question of ‘So when will you do your hair?’ Because our hair is not considered ‘done’ when it is in its natural state. This is a perception that has formed a huge part of our relationship with our hair. Where most products aimed at black women speak to how to curl and style your hair, and offer you many ways to alter the structure of your hair, I wanted to create a product that was specifically suited for my type of hair; not to change it but to keep it in its healthiest form. Through our research we found that African hair is characterized by kinky curls and grows closer to the scalp. It is the structure of the hair that makes it challenging for the hair’s natural oils to travel down the hair strands to its tips. Nilotiqa is the solution to maintaining hair’s natural moisture.  Nilotiqa isn’t selling black women dreams about how it’ll change their hair to something so different they won’t recognize themselves. It is offering a solution which allows them a way to retain the moisture that their hair requires for healthy maintenance and growth, which is often tarnished by the use of inorganic products and many years of use of harmful products aimed at altering the form of our already beautiful hair. Whether you wear a weave or braids, Nilotiqa is aimed at keeping what is beneath, which is your natural hair, in its healthiest state.” What have been some of your biggest challenges and your biggest successes? “Biggest successes: First purchase of a Nilotiqa product online Launching into Clicks in 2018 Partnering with Sunpac Biggest challenges: A lack of resources (staff and funds) and knowledge of how retail works, can kill your business. You could be spending money ineffectively and watch your business fall apart. Surrounding yourselves with people that know better than you is a game changer. Trying to run the business with a small team proved to be more challenging that ever expected. Expanding to the other retail houses was

Essential makeup brushes everyone should have in their kit

Whether you’re a professional or a novice, makeup brushes are an important tool for every makeup lover. It’s been said that we reach peak adulthood when we own a full set of makeup brushes (and actually know how to use them!).  But why use makeup brushes as opposed to your fingers, sponges or other applicators? Good quality makeup brushes make the process of applying makeup easier, they are the hygienic option (when washed regularly) and they help you achieve professional-looking results thanks to their blending and blurring abilities.  However, with so many different makeup brushes on the market, choosing a select few can be quite overwhelming. Knowing exactly which ones to use with which products can be confusing. The truth is, that you don’t need every single brush available. You need a select few to cover the basics, such as foundation, blush and eyeshadow, and then a few others depending on the type of makeup you like to wear, such as an eyeliner brush, concealer brush or highlighter brush.   Because it can be hard to narrow down, we’ve compiled a list of the top ten makeup brushes every makeup lover should have in their arsenal. 1. Foundation brush Perfect for buffing foundation onto your skin, a good quality foundation brush will be filled with densely packed bristles that allow you to build coverage and blend seamlessly. Try: wet n wild Foundation Brush(R99.99). It has a flat, dense head for expertly applying and blending cream and liquid foundations onto the skin in a streak-free, flawless finish. 2. Blush brush There are several different types of blush brushes available. We recommend a dome-shape with long, soft bristles. This shape allows for light sweeping motions across the apples of the cheeks, resulting in natural-looking pop of colour. Try: Real Techniques Tapered Cheek Brush (R250.00) which has small, tapered bristles that precisely apply a pop of colour for a natural flush. Its precision brush head allows for buildable coverage and it can also be used for applying highlighter.  3. All-in-one face brush Cover all your bases with an all-in-one face brush that can be used with liquid and powder formulas of foundation, bronzer and face powder. Perfect for travel (when your luggage is limited) or when you’re starting out (or building up) your collection, an all-in-one offers convenience and affordability.  Try: Real Techniques Everything Face Brush (R320.00) is a multi-purpose tool designed to seamlessly blend your makeup for a flawless glow. The oversized head and fluffy bristles provide light to medium coverage and a smooth finish. 4. Concealer brush Concealer brushes are usually small with soft bristles, and are designed to apply concealer with precision, especially around hard-to-reach areas such as the inner corners of the nose and underneath the eyes. Try: wet n wild Small Concealer Brush (R64.99). It allows you to precisely apply concealer where you need it, without streaking, to highlight your features and counteract the unevenness caused by blemishes and dark circles. 5. Powder brush While you might not wear powder formulas every day, a powder brush is an essential part of your toolkit as you can’t use other larger brushes as a substitute (the bristles are usually packed too tightly, resulting in compacted powder application). To apply powder, you’ll need a brush that’s fluffy, soft and flexible, allowing you to sweep product on lightly and avoid a cakey look. Try: wet n wild Powder Brush (R99.99) It lightly dusts setting powders, blushes and bronzers into the skin for an airbrushed look that is light, even and natural. 6. Angled / contour brush You no longer need to do full-on contouring to achieve more defined cheekbones. Strategic placement of highlighter, blush or a little bit of contouring product will sculpt, heighten and define.   Try: wet n wild Contour Brush (R99.99), which is perfectly angled to emphasise your cheekbones and enhance your bone structure in a few sweeps. 7. Eyeshadow brush One of the most important things to do when it comes to applying eyeshadow, is to blend, blend, and blend some more. And the best way to do that, is with a good quality eyeshadow brush. The Real Techniques Tapered Eyeshadow Brush (which forms part of the new Real Techniques Naturally Beautiful Eye Makeup Brush Kit (R480.00) can be used to apply both cream and powder eyeshadows. It has long, fluffy bristles to ensure a light and precise application of shadow. 8. Crease brush If you already have an eyeshadow brush, why would you need a crease brush too? While it’s not an absolute necessity, it certainly does make eyeshadow application easier and helps you achieve the enviable cut crease. Try: Real Techniques Instapop Crease Brush, which has dense bristles for seamless, precision blending from the crease of the eye to the lid – perfect to diffuse multiple colours flawlessly. This new brush forms part of the Real Techniques Eye Love Drama Brush Kit (R480.00). 9. Liner brush If you’re a gel or liquid eyeliner fan, you’ll need a good quality liner brush to achieve your desired look. Depending on the type of eyeliner look you’re going for, you’ll need either a winged liner brush or a small, tight brush. The Real Techniques Wing Liner Brush creates a defined wing with ease using liquid or gel liner for a buildable, natural eye look. Alternatively, the Real Techniques Tight Liner Brush features an innovative design that provides the perfect angle to apply eyeliner to the lash and water line. Both of these brushes form part of the new Real Techniques Eye Love Drama Brush Kit (R480.00). 10. Eyebrow brush We spend a lot of time grooming our eyebrows, so it’s only natural that we’d need a brush dedicated to our brows. A brow spoolie or brow comb work wonders in taming unruly brows and  The newly-launched Real Techniques Naturally Beautiful Eye Makeup Brush Kit (R480.00) features a Brow Duo brush, with a spoolie on one end and brow comb on the other.  The new Real Techniques brushes and brush kits, as well as the wet n wild makeup brushes, are available at Clicks.

How to keep your skin glowing this winter

While we love the thought of cozy jerseys, cups of hot chocolate and snuggling up in bed with a good book after a long, warm summer, we don’t love the way winter affects our skin. Dryness, dehydration, chapped lips and tightness are just a few of the most common skincare concerns that pop up when the temperature drops. During winter, humidity is lower both indoors and outdoors, meaning there is less moisture in the air. The water content of the top or outermost layer of our skin (known as the epidermis) tends to reflect the humidity around it, and this is why our skin is more prone to dryness during winter. While we focus a lot of our attention on dryness and dehydration during winter, there is another common skincare concern that does the rounds this time of year. If you’ve ever thought your complexion looks tired or dull during the colder months, you wouldn’t be alone. A lackluster skin with a lack of radiance is a common winter concern. Some of the most common causes of dull skin include: Dehydration Luminosity is closely related to the moisture levels in your skin. One of the leading causes of dullness is dehydration. When the skin is dehydrated, the volume of blood flow to the skin is less than if it is hydrated, which could make the skin look paler and dull. When the skin is dehydrated, fine lines and wrinkles may also appear more noticeable. Dead skin cells Our skin sheds dead skin cells every day, and if these cells are not removed from the skin, they can leave the complexion looking dull and tired, and if a build-up occurs, it can even lead to breakouts. Weekly or bi-weekly exfoliation removes dry and dead skin cells, allowing the ingredients in your skincare products to be absorbed more easily, and preventing clogged pores and blackheads. Exfoliation also smoothes the skin’s surface, so that it reflects light and appears brighter.  Dryness Whilst dehydration refers to a lack of water in the skin, dryness refers to a lack of oil in the skin. Dry skin is typically textured, may have fine cracks and a build-up of cells on the outer most layer of the epidermis.  Lifestyle While skincare plays a major role in the skin’s luminosity, there are plenty of lifestyle factors that also play a role. Stress results in an increase in the hormone cortisol, which may have a negative effect on the way in blood flow to the skin. Smoking may lead to collagen breakdown, which results in sallow skin. Not sleeping enough also plays a role. Our skin regenerates while we sleep, and if that time is cut short, skin cells will not function optimally. Then there’s the environment to consider. Living in an urban environment with a lot of pollution may affect the skin’s texture, as may exposure to harmful UV rays.  What can be done to increase radiance and glow? One of the single most important things you can do to improve dullness and increase radiance is to include vitamin C in your skincare regime. Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant that has the ability to brighten, firm, nourish and smooth skin. More than any other ingredient, it makes the skin glow, often with immediate effect, and offers continued improved radiance the longer you use it.  Not only does it help the skin build collagen, but it can also lighten pigmentation and dark marks.  Vitamin C is mildly exfoliating, which makes it a great ingredient to add to facial scrubs and exfoliants. We recommend exfoliating at least once a week with an illuminating scrub, like NIP+FAB’s Vitamin C Scrub Fix(R250.00). This energizing formula is infused with vitamin C, coffee seed extract and coconut oil to effectively cleanse, nourish and renew the skin. Because of its exfoliating properties, vitamin C found in facial cleansers may offer gentle daily exfoliation to prevent a build-up of dry or dead skin cells. NIP+FAB Vitamin C Fix Cleanser (R250.00) helps to protect skin from everyday environmental pollutants whilst revealing clearer, brighter skin.  Antioxidants like vitamin C protect the skin from free radicals caused by the sun and pollution, allowing the skin to retain its youthfulness for longer. When used regularly, it may also help soften fine lines and wrinkles. Applying a vitamin C serum and moisturizer twice a day will not only ensure that the skin stays moisturized and hydrated, but it will also improve the skin’s general appearance.  Try Creightons 2% Vitamin C Face Serum (R139.95) and Creightons Vitamin C Moisturiser (R89.95) Vitamin C is also a popular ingredient used to treat dark circles and under-eye bags. Apply a vitamin C-rich eye cream to brighten the eye area. Try Creightons Vitamin C Eye Serum (R115.95). With 2% vitamin C, this lightweight formula rejuvenates and replenishes the under-eye area and minimises the appearance of dark circles. In addition to using a good quality vitamin C skincare range, it’s also important to make heathy lifestyle choices. Avoiding smoking and processed foods, getting sufficient sleep and finding healthy ways to manage stress all contribute to a healthy and radiant complexion.

SKIN BARRIER PROTECTION AND WHAT THIS MEANS

Plump, glowing, youthful, clear, healthy and the list goes on of words we want to use to describe our skin. How many of these words can actually be used to describe the current state of your skin? We’re guessing no more than two, maybe three. The reason why you might not be able to tick all these boxes is because our skin is imperfect, and that is how it is supposed to be  – but also, because too many of us don’t pay enough attention to protecting our barrier.  Tumi Lehutso from Fundamentals Skincare breaks down the skin barrier for us:  What is our skin barrier?  Here is the tea – your skin is made up of layers, each of which performs important functions in protecting your body. The outermost layer, called the stratum corneum consists of tough skin cells called corneocytes that are bound together by mortar-like lipids. This is your skin barrier. Functions of the skin barrier  Think of your skin barrier as your skin’s built in warrior. Its function is to defend and protect the body from excessive trans epidermal water loss (TEWL), as well as to prevent the penetration of compounds into the body via the epidermis. It regulates water loss from the inside out, retains moisture, and keeps you hydrated. Second, it helps protect your skin from harsh elements like UV rays, pollutants, microbes, and chemicals or those you put on your skin. If your skin barrier is damaged, it could lead to skin problems like dry, ired, inflamed, tchy, or flaky skin. What damages your skin barrier?  Protecting your skin can sometimes seem like a scene out of Thor and this is because the environment, our stress levels and products all can contribute to damaging our skin’s barrier. The main culprits are:  an environment that’s either too humid or too dry allergens, irritants, and pollutants too much sun exposure alkaline detergents and soaps exposure to harsh chemicals over-exfoliation or over-washing steroids genetic factors that may make you more prone to certain skin conditions like atopic dermatitis and psoriasis When your skin barrier isn’t functioning properly, you may be more prone to developing the following skin symptoms and conditions: dry, scaly skin, itchiness, rough or discolored patches, acne, sensitive or inflamed areas, bacterial, viral, or fungal skin infections.  How can we protect our skin’s barrier?  The absolute first step for anyone with a compromised skin barrier is to simplify your skin care routine. Use fewer products and more of the actives you need. Reduce exfoliation to once or twice a week and when exfoliating do so gently using light chemical exfoliators.  Another very important thing to consider is your pH. Your skin’s delicate acid mantle hovers around a pH of 5.7. But the pH of some skin products can range from 3.7, all the way up to 8.2. Professionals and research recommend  cleansing with a product that’s close to your skin’s natural pH. Incorporate some plant oils into your routine: jojoba oil, coconut oil, almond oil, argan oil, borage oil, rosehip oil, soybean oil. Alongside this, look for formulations that includes Ceramides. Ceramides are waxy lipids found in especially high concentrations in the stratum corneum. They are crucial for the healthy functioning of your skin barrier. Beat hot flashes naturally with Lady Prelox

When you hear about hot flashes, most women immediately think “menopause” and reckon it’s something they’d only have to worry about in their mid to late 40s. Thing is, this annoying, make-up ruining, life-interrupting symptom can affect you as early as your late 30s during perimenopause, the lead up to your final period. Even more annoying? While, on average, perimenopause lasts around 4 to 6 years, it can bother you for as long as 10. That’s a long time to want to walk around with a fan in your handbag but, happily, you don’t have to. Lady Prelox, an all-natural supplement developed especially for women, has been proven to help alleviate hot flashes. But before we get into why it’s a brilliant solution to an age-old problem, let’s first chat about why your body’s thermostat feels like it’s running wild and what you can do to temper it.  Hormones and hot flashes   When you enter perimenopause, a time when your ovaries start to run low on eggs, you can expect hormonal fluctuations that trigger a laundry list of symptoms. These include mood changes, a loss of libido, vaginal dryness, trouble concentrating, exhaustion, migraines, insomnia, night sweats and the aforementioned “super fun” hot flashes.  Fortunately, there are lots of things you can do to improve your experience as you transition into the period-free part of your life. For starters, don’t underestimate the importance of a healthy diet and getting enough exercise. You also definitely don’t want to smoke. While the increased risk of cancer should be enough to put anyone off, studies have shown that female smokers are more likely to go into menopause earlier than non-smokers. They’re also more likely to experience more frequent as well as more intense symptoms, particularly hot flashes. So what’s a woman to do?   Lifestyle changes aside, you have several treatment options that include taking hormone therapy and medications like low-dose antidepressants. Still, many women prefer to go the natural route and this is where things can get murky. For example, black cohosh is a herb commonly used with the intention of improving the symptoms of menopause, including hot flashes. However, there’s not enough evidence to suggest it’s effective and there’s no guarantee you’re ever buying a product containing the very particular variant of herb proposed to suppress the flash. Fortunately, not every natural option is a gamble and this is where Lady Prelox fits in – a million miles ahead of the competition.  Patented and proven  A patented estrogen-free health supplement, Lady Prelox contains premium plant-based ingredients that include Pycnogenol® (a derivative of French maritime pine bark extract), Rosvita® (rosehip extract) and two amino acids – L-Arginine and L-Citrulline. Together, they’ve been clinically proven to significantly improve hot flashes and night sweats in peri-menopausal women in as little as four weeks! Better yet, it wasn’t just the study’s participants’ ability to beat the heat that improved. Lady Prelox also enhanced their ability to focus and reduced their feelings of anxiety.  But wait – there’s more!  As if these weren’t all the reasons you’d need to consider Lady Prelox a must for any woman entering the next phase of life, there’s another big benefit you’ll want to know about: Lady Prelox is also clinically proven to boost sexual function and satisfaction in women between 37 and 45 by a whopping 88%. It’s also proven to boost sexual satisfaction in menopausal and even post-menopausal women by 60% and more. Again, these improvements were all evident within just 30 days. Talk about a brilliant bonus! If you’re struggling with hot flashes and other menopause-related symptoms – or simply want to enhance your sex life – Lady Prelox really is the obvious all-natural solution.  Visit: https://www.preloxrange.co.za/ for more information

YOUR 5-STEP SKINCARE ROUTINE FOR HAPPY SKIN IN WINTER

Winter has already started knocking at our doors which calls for a change in our skincare routines to avoid our skin falling victim to the extreme weather conditions. Your skin barrier is the most susceptile to depletion during Winter from the cold weather, hot water and dry heat, which all deplete the natural skin ceramides and essential fatty acids.  Achieving or maintaining healthy, glowing and comfortable skin comes from having an intact skin barrier. It protects the skin from bacteria and pollution and stops transepidermal water loss – essential to prevent dehydration.  The Essentials These harsh environmental factors experienced in Winter promote dry skin, dry patches, inflammation and less hydration in the skin. Try reduce the size of your skincare vanity and only use a few key products. Our recommendation: Introduce serums and vitamin C, switch to a cleanser with aloe vera, use more moisturising products and invest in a thicker moisturiser for face and body – and of course don’t forget SPF. Tumi Lehutso from Fundamentals Skincare explained: “While you don’t necessarily need to overhaul your skincare routine each season, there are few small changes you might want to make. Sunscreens, moisturisers and serums are essentially the foundation of your routine, and they won’t necessarily need to be switched out.” Regime Reset Step 1: Cleanser. Using a cleanser that has Aloe Vera will help your skin heal from any damage caused by the colder weather. Aloe is a household plant and when used in skincare assists in moisturising the skin. It also helps with acne, eczema, and sunburn. Step 2: Toner. Baobab oil is a rich source of omega fatty acids that fight inflammation, making it a great choice for sensitive or inflamed skin. Baobab’s anti-inflammatory properties soothe irritation and can even help with skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis. Using a toner that has Baobab and is alcohol-free will help you achieve smooth, soft, hydrated skin with reduced inflammation and improved barrier functioning. Step 3: Serum. Consider using a Vitamin C or Hyaluronic Acid. For all skin types, L-ascorbic acid is the most potent form of vitamin C and can be the most beneficial. Hyaluronic Acid will give your skin a boost of hydration and is suitable for all skin types.  Step 4: Moisturiser. Undoubtably the most important step for your face and body. Invest in a well-formulated face moisturiser and body butter. For face consider ceramide for ultimate hydration. We need ceramides for skin to work properly but age and environmental triggers reduce ceramides in our skin. For body consider a body cream/butter with Niacinamide which is effective for hydration and managing  the environmental impact on the skin.  Step 5: Last but not least – SPF. We know by now that SPF should be used all year. There are still UV rays present even when the sun isn’t shining. A sun protection factor of 30 is suitable.  For more information:  Shop: https://fundamentals-skincare.co.za  Instagram: @fundamentals_skincare Tik Tok: @fundamentals_skincare Facebook: @FundamentalsSkincare

Irregular periods? Consider an all-natural solution like Ovaria

When life is busy, weeks fly by like days. Unless you’re tracking your period via an app or pay close attention to the calendar, you might not even notice should you miss a period. Also, if you’re dealing with a spotty cycle or taking birth control to actively “skip” a period, it can be even harder to keep track. Still, once you realise you’re not menstruating the way you expect to, it’s a sign that shouldn’t be ignored. Why is my period irregular? First up, every woman is different and lots of things can affect the way they experience menstruation. However, your period could be considered irregular if the time between them starts to change or the duration begins to vary significantly. In this case, make an appointment to chat with your doctor or gynaecologist. The causes of a period gone astray really do run the gamut and can range from overdoing it in the exercise department to having fibroids (typically non-cancerous muscular tumours) growing in your uterus. Still, one of the most common conditions that can cause an irregular period is an all-too-common hormonal disorder, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). According to the South African Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, it affects as many as 20% of our country’s women in their childbearing years and is linked to 40% of its cases of female infertility. The good news, however, is that it’s very treatable and the negative effect it can have on your fertility can, in many cases, be reversed. It’s all about your hormones To understand PCOS – as well as how to treat and beat it – realise that the root cause is unbalanced hormones. To start, sufferers typically produce more androgen (the male hormone). This causes the ovaries to not release an egg each month and other negative effects include oily skin, an increase in acne and excessive hair growth – often in unwanted places such as on your face! Another hormone that goes haywire when you’ve got PCOS? Insulin. In fact, as many as 70% of PCOS sufferers will also be insulin resistant. In this case, your body starts to produce an excessive amount of insulin because it’s stopped responding to the important message this hormone signals – that it’s time to use the sugar in your blood for energy. Instead, the glucose just languishes in your veins, elevating your bloody sugar levels, and eventually gets stored away as fat. This is why being insulin resistant and struggling to lose weight, particularly around the belly area, go hand in hand. It’s also why suffering from PCOS and not treating it can dramatically increase your risk of developing diabetes. Bring back the balance Clearly, having an irregular period isn’t something you want to ignore so chat with your doctor to get a diagnosis. If it turns out to be PCOS, get onto a treatment plan as soon as possible for the sake of your fertility and your health. This might involve making lifestyle changes, like scheduling more treadmill time and improving your diet, as well as taking prescription medication that will help balance your hormones. A proven all-natural solution Another way you can ease the symptoms of PCOS is via a proven supplement – Ovaria by Lamelle Pharmaceuticals A great tasting powder that can be added to any liquid, Ovaria contains a blend of all-natural ingredients including Myo-inositol. This naturally occurring carbohydrate won’t aggravate insulin resistance. Instead, it helps to regulate your body’s response to it, reducing your risk of developing diabetes as well as other PCOS-related complications. Better yet, when you manage your insulin levels, you’ll reduce your androgen levels. As a result, Ovaria can support weight loss while reducing the severity of acne as well as excessive hair growth. The other great thing about Ovaria is that it’s clinically proven. Studies show it can restore the regularity of your menstrual cycle and increase your ovulation rate to enhance your fertility in as little as 16 weeks! The bottom line If you discover your irregular period is being caused by PCOS, know that you’re not alone. There are lots of ways you can treat it and one of the most natural, non-prescription as well as proven solutions is Ovaria. It’s helped ease the PCOS symptoms of hundreds of woman around the globe so why shouldn’t you be one of them?

How to prep your hair for winter with Hask hair treatments

As much as we hate to admit it, cooler weather has already arrived, and before we know it, we’ll be in the middle of full-blown winter. Winter is the time of year that our hair suffers the most due to the extreme drop in temperature. That’s because exposure to excessive cold can lead to dryness, dehydration, split ends and breakage. And simultaneously, exposure to indoor heating can draw moisture from the skin and hair, also resulting in dehydration.   Between heated indoor spaces and cold air outside, our hair takes a beating. And while winter isn’t anything to dread, it does call for extra TLC and added nourishing ingredients in our haircare regimes. The best way to increase moisture and hydration, prevent split ends, strengthen hair and protect against damage and breakage is to incorporate a nourishing hair mask into your regime. When applied weekly, consistently, it goes a long way to nourish, protect and restore hair.  Hask has a range of hair treatments designed to do just that. Making use of some of nature’s most nourishing ingredients, there is something for everyone. These are the ingredients we recommend you start using now, to not only prep your hair for the colder months, but also to maintain its health, moisture and shine throughout the season: Argan oil  High in antioxidants, essential fatty acids and vitamin E, argan oil has been trusted for centuries to nourish, hydrate and protect hair. Nicknamed “liquid gold,” this multi-tasking ingredient is both a moisturiser and a sealant, which means that it has the ability to penetrate the hair as well as lock in moisture by sealing the strand on the surface. If you’re looking for an ingredient that will make your hair softer and more manageable while offering intensely nourishing benefits, argan oil is a great option to try.  Try: Hask Argan Oil Intense Deep Conditioning Hair Treatment (R74.99). Formulated with keratin, this super strengthening and hydrating treatment restores and smooths dry, damaged and over-processed hair. It works hard to restore lost moisture and prevent breakage, all while nourishing the hair to keep it looking healthy and shiny. Hemp oil A member of the cannabis sativa species of plant, hemp seed oil is a clear green oil made by cold-pressing hemp seeds. Believed to have many health benefits, hemp seeds are rich in polyunsaturated omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. Known to help relieve the symptoms of dry and itchy skin, hemp seed oil has also shown remarkable benefits for the skin on the scalp, and has the ability to promote healthy hair growth, increase shine, moisturise hair and revive damaged hair.  Try: Hask Hemp Oil & Agave Moisturising Deep Conditioner (R74.99). This replenishing treatment provides an instant moisture boost for dry and damaged hair. It is made with organic hemp seed oil to deliver superior humectant properties for your softest, most hydrated hair yet.   Shea butter A fat derived from the nuts of the shea tree, shea butter is rich in vitamins A and E, as well as essential fatty acids. Not only do these fatty acids help reduce dehydration, but they also minimise frizz and increase manageability. Shea butter is non-greasy, and is known to be an excellent moisturiser for skin and hair. It has the ability to prevent future dryness and damage, as well as restore past and current damage and dryness. It has anti-inflammatory properties and may help reduce scalp irritation.  Try: Hask Shea Butter & Hibiscus Oil Anti-Frizz Deep Conditioner (R74.99). It moisturises and strengthens dehydrated and weak hair and is formulated with an innovative technology that strengthens the hair fibres to reduce breakage.  Keratin Keratin is a type of protein naturally found in our hair, skin and nails, as well as in the body’s internal organs and glands. It is a protective protein and is the structural building block of the hair. When applied to hair, keratin works by smoothing the cells that overlap to form the hair strands. The hair cuticle (layers of cells in the hair strand) absorb the keratin, resulting in smoother, shinier and more manageable hair. Keratin also has the ability to make curly hair less frizzy.  Try: Hask Keratin Protein Smoothing Deep Conditioner (R74.99). An intense treatment that helps restore moisture to dry and damaged hair. It contains keratin protein to repair damage and prevent breakage and leaves hair shiny and smooth. Monoi Oil Monoi has been used for centuries, and originally originated from soaking Tahitian gardenia petals in pure coconut oil. Monoi oil thus offers many of the same benefits of coconut oil. The term “monoi” can only be used for oils that are sourced from the French Polynesian region. Gardenia petals are rich in vitamin E, an antioxidant that helps promote healthy hair growth and a healthy scalp, while coconut oil is highly moisturising and filled with anti-inflammatory properties. This powerful combination not only helps protect hair from the environment, but also hydrates and nourishes. Try: Hask Monoi Oil Nourishing Deep Conditioner (R74.99). Suitable for all hair types and designed to restore lost moisture, this intense treatment leaves your hair nourished and revived. IS THERE A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SPF 30 AND SPF 50

With the amount of skincare knowledge now freely available, it is a known fact how important and essential applying a sunscreen is everyday, especially with skin cancer becoming the most common form of cancer among people.  As we know, SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor, which is the measure to determine how well sunscreen is able to shield against UV rays.  UVB rays are responsible for producing sunburn. The UVB rays also play the greatest role in causing skin cancers, including the deadly black mole form of skin cancer (malignant melanoma). We also know that we need a high SPF factor to get adequate protection from the sun – but is there really a difference between an SPF 30 and a SPF 50?  What’s the real tea on SPF?  The SPF number on any skincare product is listed on the front of the packaging to tell you how long the sun’s UV radiation would take to redden your skin. Which we know as sunburn. Sunburn over time is known to cause premature ageing, suns spots and in extreme cases skin cancer.  With the earth’s atmosphere also being reduced due to global warming, the sun’s rays are a lot more potent and can have an even greater impact on the skin over a shorter period of time. Skin cancer can be significantly reduced by using a sunscreen 365 days a year, starting in early childhood.  Tumi Lehutso at Fundamentals Skincare says, “When choosing the right SPF for you and your family, it is important to note that the number in the SPF is a ratio (SPF 15, 20, 30, 50) and all have the same physical protection within the burn time. Burn time is classified as the time you start damaging cells. It is important to note that every single skin has a different burn time. SPF 50 has a longer protection time until the burn time than SPF 30 for example. On a daily basis you need to be using a SPF of at least 30 and no less – as a SPF 30 and SPF 50 provide more than enough protection for your skin.” For an office day spf 30 is perfect.  Another box that needs to be ticked when choosing a sunscreen is checking whether it is broad spectrum – this means that it provides protection against the sun’s UVA (aging) rays and UVB (burning) rays, which helps prevent skin cancer, early skin aging (premature age spots, wrinkles, and sagging skin) and sunburn. If it’s not broad spectrum, it won’t provide overall protection.  Lastly, there are different types of sunscreen you should know about:  Mineral also known as inorganic filters. Mineral sunscreen works by creating a physical barrier that reflects and blocks the suns energy and UV rays. Normal active ingredients is zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. It is gentler on sensitive skin and better for hyperpigmentation and melasma. A mineral sunscreen can be formulated to not have a white cast such as the Fundamentals Skincare sunscreen.  Chemical also known as organic filters. Chemical sunscreens works by absorbing the suns energy and UV rays. This is done through converting the rays into heat and releasing them from the skin. Active ingredients include oxybenzone, avobenzone and homosalate. A chemical sunscreen is normally sheer and clear in appearance and is used in oils, serums and sprays.  “As long as you’re using sunscreen correctly, you’re doing it right. Use daily and reapply often should be your mantra,” concludes Lehutso.  For more information:  Shop: https://fundamentals-skincare.co.za  Instagram: @fundamentals_skincare Tik Tok: @fundamentals_skincare Facebook: @FundamentalsSkincare
