Milk Galore

Getting ready to BREASTFEED!

How to get ready to breastfeed? Milk Galore, a brand made for mommies to assist with the increase the flow of breastmilk, would like to advise Mommies on how to get ready to breastfeed especially when nearing the end of pregnancy and planning to breastfeed baby. Below are some helpful hints on how to ensure the process goes hump less.  Here’s how to prepare for breastfeeding your newborn: Doing some research is key. Learn the basics about breastfeeding. Reading up on good books on breastfeeding, reading on breastfeeding tips on social media or trusted websites so that Mommy can educate herself on the benefits of breastfeeding. These are helpful during the initial challenges you might face and can help you prepare for your baby’s first few days of life.  Support group are great for community support. Many hospitals and pediatricians’ offices have a support group for breastfeeding moms. These meetings are meant to give new moms community as they learn the ups and downs of breastfeeding.  Check out lactation consultant close to you.  These professionals can assist a great deal especially the first few weeks of your newborns life assisting with monitoring weight, troubleshoot latch issues, and address any challenges that might arise as you and your baby learn to breastfeed. Prepare to pump with assistance from Milk Galore products to help stimulate the flow of milk as a natural supplement. Ensuring enough food is available for the baby is crucial so pumping as a mom is important, and then some moms will pump exclusively as a way to breastfeed their baby. Mom can educate helfself on pumping and storing breast milk. Moms going back to work need to discuss with their employers on appropriate place to pump. Talk with your partner about how they can support you as a breastfeeding mom. A lot of your time during the first months of your baby’s life will be spent skin-to-skin, nursing your little one. Your partner might not be able to nurse your baby, but they can take on more housework, care for older children, and deliver water and snacks to you to make sure your needs are being met. Get close right away.  Immediately after you give birth, place your baby skin-to-skin on your bare chest. (You can also do this after a C-section; just ask your medical staff for extra support to place your baby safely on your chest.) When babies are left undisturbed on Mom’s bare chest, it wakens their feeding instincts. Start breastfeeding immediately after you deliver your baby. Breastfeeding shortly after birth is associated with increased chances of breastfeeding success. Your baby may be sleepy at first but more awake the second day, and they may cluster feed at night. Follow their hunger cues and feed your baby on demand. Enlist your friends and family for help. Breastfeeding will keep you busy, especially when your baby is a newborn. Friends and family can help by dropping by meals, spending time with your older kids, and helping out around the house. But limit visits if they interfere with breastfeeding and being skin-to-skin with your baby. If possible, ask your partner to be a gatekeeper at the door (greeting visitors, accepting food or gifts, and relaying information) so you can rest. What do you need for breastfeeding? These products can make breastfeeding more comfortable and convenient: Milk Galore products as a natural stimulant to increase flow of breastmilk. Only does it increase milk but also a natural supplement for iron. Dependent on preference of mother available in juice and rooibos. Available at www.milkgalore.co.za  Nursing bras are comfortable and provide the extra support your larger-than-usual breasts need. They come with flaps that you can easily undo at feeding time. It’s best to wait until the last couple of weeks of pregnancy to shop for new nursing bras – this is when your breasts will be closest to their postpartum size. That said, once your milk comes in your breasts may grow another size or two! Keep that in mind when buying. Nursing tops and pyjamas have convenient flaps that allow you to breastfeed easily and discreetly. Some nursing tanks are very supportive and can work as a bra and top in one. Note: In the early days of breastfeeding, you may just want to wear a comfy button-down shirt or robe so you can easily keep your baby skin-to-skin. Nursing pillows are specially designed to support your baby while you’re nursing, and can help you avoid straining your shoulders or neck during feeding sessions. They’re more convenient – and better at keeping your baby in position – than regular pillows. Nursing pads. It’s normal for your breasts to leak while you’re nursing, and another baby’s cry or the sight of an infant can bring on a gush of milk when you least expect it. Disposable nursing pads (or reusable, washable ones) will keep you and your shirts nice and dry. A breast pump. Even if you’re not planning to pump regularly, a breast pump can be a useful tool – to help relieve engorgement, for example. Many health insurance plans cover breast pumps, so check with your insurer before buying a pump. Bottles and nipples. If you’ll be feeding your baby pumped breast milk, you’ll need a selection of good bottles and nipples. Some babies prefer one brand over another, so it’s a good idea to avoid stocking up until you learn which bottles and nipples your baby likes best. Other breastfeeding accessories. Nipple cream or balm can help relieve sore nipples, and hot/cold gel packs can soothe swollen or sore breasts. Some moms also like to have a nursing cover for breastfeeding in public and breast milk storage bags for storing pumped milk.

Exfoliation: The Key to Smooth, Fresh & Glowing Summer Skin

Every day 330 billion of your body’s skin cells replace themselves in a skin evolution of natural exfoliation, with your body taking approximately 27 days to completely regenerate your skin’s protective sheath transforming you into a ‘new’ you. With significant increases in air pollution however, including cigarette and vape smoke, dust, exhaust fumes, chemical smog, and harsh weather conditions, all of these pollutants can have a significant effect on your skin, accelerating skin irritations, allergic reactions, rashes and wrinkles, leaving your skin with decreased elasticity and accelerated aging as it becomes grimy, clogged, stressed and unable to protect you effectively. Regular exfoliation as part of your personal skincare routine is your simple and most effective answer to doing away with that weathered, winter look. The ultimate way to rejuvenate your skin, exfoliation resurfaces your skin, gently cleaning out your pores of oil and dead skin and polishing and refining the surface to leave it smooth, velvet-soft, and radiantly glowing. Make some smart moves this summer and make a debut this holiday season with a well-maintained and youthful glow when you support and stimulate your skin to be smooth, clean, and healthy each day. What happens if you don’t cleanse and exfoliate your skin? Poor exfoliation causes increased production in your skin’s oil glands and is the leading cause of blackheads and whiteheads, acne, ingrown hair follicles, and trapped dead skin cells which can lead to inflammations, pustules, and a feeding pool of bacteria. Apart from delivering fresh and hygienically healthy skin, exfoliation has several other benefits for you as well. Exfoliation encourages: #Faster Cell Generation: Exfoliation is the key to boosting new cell turnover, loosening, and lifting dead skin cells and making way for cleaner, younger, and more absorbent skin that can be nourished and protected. #Increase in Collagen: When you add or increase your exfoliation treatments, your skin is stimulated and alerted to produce more collagen which helps to keep your skin firm and wrinkle free. Exfoliation helps your moisturiser and anti-age serums to penetrate better. #Wrinkle & Worry-Free Days: Research tells us that wrinkles get wedged into place and are deepened by corneocyte plugs which are balls of dead, hardened skin which build up and keep your wrinkles in place. The gentle circular motions of your all-over body exfoliation provide a massage effect which helps to keep your skin clear of these plugs, so it is more difficult for wrinkles to form. #Boost Lymphatic Drainage: Exfoliation encourages blood circulation and an increase in your skin’s hydration levels. It also reduces the risk of ingrown hairs, making shaving easier and diminishing the appearance of skin discolouration and dark spots with use over time. #Sensory Touch Stimulation: Just like a baby’s, our bodies love to be touched and soothed and exfoliating your body’s skin is a perfect opportunity to calm and pamper yourself with a loving touch and healthy attitude towards self-care, mood enhancement and confidence, enjoyed along with the fragrant feel-good scent of your exfoliator.   How often should you exfoliate? Depending on whether you have a sensitive skin or are a sun goddess soaking up the sun rays all day will decide how often you should exfoliate. The recommended use is two to three times per week but if you have sensitive skin, exfoliate once a week but always go according to how your skin feels after exfoliation. It should tingle and feel invigorated and stimulated and not dried out, irritated or red from over scrubbing. Over exfoliating can remove the natural oils from your skin which it needs to stay subtle. If you stop exfoliating your skin, you will soon notice it will become dry and rough again within about two weeks. After exfoliating apply a moisturiser or moisturising tissue oil and consider protecting it with a sunscreen before going outdoors. Bramleys’ Limited Edition Shea Butter Exfoliating Body Scrub 250ml R29.99 is launching! Koa Academy

Thinking about enrolling your child in online school?

They are not all the same.  These are the must-ask questions for the school leader, which we put to Koa Academy’s Principal Mark Anderson: 1.            What is the child to teacher ratio? Mark: Koa has small Pods with a maximum of 8 children to one teacher. We believe that this is essential in the online space to maintain high engagement. Unfortunately, many online schools are packing more kids than ever into virtual classrooms, which leads to everyone feeling disconnected. Our Pods make sure that we stay engaged! 2.            How easily can I contact the teacher/principal if I have concerns? Mark: Our teachers and school leaders are readily and directly available to you online through phone, video chat and email channels. 3.            Is the school accredited? Mark: Yes!  Koa is accredited with the IEB and staffed only by teachers who are SACE registered.   The IEB offers a range of top benefits to our learners and we can tell you all about that. 4.            Does the school offer latest online education resources and platforms, or is it simply traditional school dumped online and presented on-screen? Mark: We say ‘no’ to school-on-a-screen! Koa leverages platforms and courses which are designed to be online from the start, which makes for an engaging and individualised learning experience that is relevant for today.  5.            Is the school intentional about socialization online and in person? Mark: Online school can and should be a safe, connected place of socio emotional as well as academic learning.  Koa actively fosters an on- and off-line school community in a variety of ways.  Online, learners interact every day in their Pod and regularly meet in whole-school gatherings. We also do regular in-person events in all the major centres. 6.            What do the school fees include? Mark: When comparing school fees, make sure there are no hidden but compulsory costs.  Many online schools advertise a set fee but then add on unavoidable costs for textbooks, online platforms or tutors.  At Koa, we keep it simple with a fully inclusive fee.

POKKELOKKIE

My baby crocodile rolls during nappy change time

There comes a time when some babies, usually around the eight to ten month mark, start to roll and do flick flacks at the one time we really need them to just lie still. Nappy changes.  This can make things quite challenging however know this – this stage does pass and there are some things you can do to keep baby entertained while you get the nappy on. It does not need to be struggle if you have some things up your clever sleeve. Keep reading… I had two babies and used our Pokkelokkie cloth nappies through both of them. I loved our nappies. It wasn’t hard work or difficult. I felt proud of every single nappy I used as I knew it wasn’t going into a bin into the earth. Using disposables stank, my babies got a rash and golly they are just so expensive. Money in the bin. The more you use your cloth nappies the smoother the process becomes. You eventually become so streamlined and well-practiced you can put nappies on with eyes closed. It really is just this! When we reached the croc stage I was desperate to find a solution. I realized my baby was bored and he became very smart and knew exactly when I wanted to change a nappy. It became almost impossible to pin him down. I felt helpless. Until I started to present small “challenges” to him during this time.  I kept a small basket hidden at the change area. Inside I added objects he would never normally encounter. Not the normal plastic toys… rattles etc. None of that stuff. The object ideally needs to have some sort of intellectual challenge the baby can master. I must add here that all objects of this nature can be found in and around your house. No need to go out and buy anything. Keep reading to see a list of these. So our nappy changing process went a bit like this. Sit baby on change mat. Present object. Baby shows interest and holds object. I lay him down while he is observing the object. I take his dirty nappy off and wipe him clean all the while talking to him about the object. I then show him what can be done with the object and see if he can do it himself. I modeled the task to him. We take turns. For example opening and closing a toothpaste lid (empty of course)/ baby bum cream lid is a good example of this small task. The most important part is showing them repeatedly how to do the task before attempting the nappy change. You may need to do this a few times and then change the nappy at the same time. Multitasking is really what this is all about but you’re a mum so you’re born with it!! You may need to show him the task, take the nappy off, show him again, wipe him down. Clap hands when he managed it. Put new nappy on. Show him how you can do it- you also have a turn- he claps hands for you etc. It’s a whole process of fun that you can both enjoy together. I must say the more you try to hurry a child the worse it will get. Children cannot be hurried- they do not have a concept of time.  Tip: Do not resort to videos or a phone. This tactic does not end well in the long run. Trying then to stop the screen will be a meltdown and anything after that kind of visual stimulation will just be boring. You are not doing yourself any favors. What you want is a nappy change to end well with a smiling baby and happy mom. A screen does not result in this. It will end in tears. Guaranteed. Once babies reach nine/ ten months old they are generally capable of small tasks. Challenge them and they will rise to the occasion.  Here are some things that worked for us. There are really many, many more objects just look around you. Please note the items must be a decent size to prevent any sort of choking. Keep an eye on your baby as babies put everything in their mouth.  A toothpaste flip lid (baby must open and close). A big plastic bottle and screw top lid (baby must learn to screw the lid on and off) A bum cream flip lid – pass them the bum cream. An empty syringe (baby must put it back together and pull it apart, repeat). A toothbrush (take turns to “brush teeth”). An electric toothbrush wins every time. A hairbrush (take turns to brush hair). A baby book (that squeaks) – anything that makes a noise is a winner. A long rope or piece of wool. A pair of plastic tweezers – open and close. Apply a small dot of bum cream on to baby’s finger. Let him do it to you. On your nose? Clothes pegs – open and close, peg baby’s t shirt, moms t shirt (baby must learn how to open and close) Use the nappy change time as an opportunity to engage with baby. Eye contact is so valuable. Sing a fun song Tickle baby Hide below the table/bed/ a book/ your hands and jump up and peek a boo Play “round and round the garden” on baby`s tummy or hand Do “this little piggy went to the market” Make ridiculous sounds with your lips and blow on baby`s tummy. Be totally silly.  Babies love silly moms!! The use of “foreign objects” was a game changer for me as my second baby was a crocodile roller and I realized I also wasn`t actually paying him the attention he needed at nappy time as I was busy trying to make him sit still. I was also rushing him and he hated that. By both being engaged in a simple task or experimenting with something together distratcts baby from the actual nappy change and allows

Traveling and Surviving the Festive Season

It is the season to be jolly but for many parents the idea of family or travel can be daunting with young ones in tow. There are many factors to consider and anything could go wrong…. Here are some tips and notes to help you get through it and hopefully, you’ll get some much-needed rest: Packing This is an art, especially when flying. Remember, that unless you are traveling to the middle of nowhere most things can be bought or replaced. So, don’t break out in a sweat if you forget something. However, don’t leave packing for the last minute. Save yourself unnecessary stress by starting early. Some things cannot be packed in advance though. Make a list of all the last-minute things that you need to pack…. These include things like a baby monitor, your baby’s lovey or favourite toy, pillow or blanket and night light. Remember to take with all the things you need for your bedtime routine (books, lovey, white noise). You can also download white noise apps on your tablet of spare phone. Most hotels and guest houses have cots, you just need to ask for one. Your carry-on bag will be one of the most important things to pack. I find that a backpack works best, it might not look as great, but it makes a big difference especially when flying as you always have your hands free to either carry baby or catch a running toddler. There is a lot of walking and waiting involved at the airport so have snacks and water on hand. Make sure to pack extra clothes for your children but also for you. Have their favourite toy/lovey with you as well as diapers, wipes (packets and packets of wipes), dummies and formula. If you use cloth nappies, I would suggest leaving those for when you arrive at your destination, and refrain from using them when you are on the go. Getting there Have realistic expectations. Know that whether you travel by car, plane or boat your child will miss some sleep. They might go to sleep only later when flying abroad or they might miss a nap. In the car, their naps or sleep often can be short. You will survive and remember that you will eventually get to your destination. With toddlers and older children also remember to prepare them and set their expectations for the journey. Plan, plan and plan some more. We often think of only the car ride and the plane ride but forget the bits in-between. Charge all the necessary toys, iPads, and portable televisions the day before.  Power banks are handy when traveling. At airports you will go through security and passport control. Plan enough time for all of this and ask to skip the line. Most airports will allow you to go to the front with small children.  You are also allowed to take a stroller and car seat with you. Most of the time, you can push the stroller all the way till you board the plane. Try to book long flights overnight and shorter flights that will fall over nap time. When traveling in a car you will have to plan regular stops that might take a while. If your child sleeps well in the car it can be helpful to travel during the night. Keep your children safe in a car seat. If they are crying rather stop and pull over; don’t take them out of their safety seat while driving. Have activities, water and snacks galore. Once you there Try to keep to normal routines, especially bedtime routines as far as possible. The younger your kids are, the more you need to stick to them. Of course, you’ll be out and about some days but try not to overschedule and over plan every day. Try to give your child the opportunity to have at least one nap a day in the cot, and remember that one nap on the go (in a sling, stroller or car) will not throw everything out. It’s your holiday and you need to try and enjoy it. Try to recreate their sleep space so that is it like home. Bring with their sheets, bedding and pillow. If your toddler sleeps with a night light or white noise take it with to your destination. Most often we must share rooms with our children on holiday. If you normally share a room of course this is not a problem but if not, you should not stress too much about it. They can sleep just as well with you in the room. Try to keep their sleep space separate though by putting the cot or bed as far away from your bed as possible. White noise can also be helpful when you need to go in the room later, or if you need to wake-up early the next day. If only your kids share a room, try to split their bedtime. Put the younger one to bed first and about 20 to 30 minutes later, explain to the older one that it is a privilege to stay awake later and they should sneak into the room like a ninja and not wake the younger one up. A common cause for concern is when you travel to somewhere, where the sun goes down later. Always remember that small children and babies have no concept of time so unless you make it an issue they won’t mind going to bed at their normal time. It can be helpful to travel with a dark sheet which you can hang over the window to help darken the room. Sweets are part of holiday but try to limit sugar and TV time before bed. Travel safe and try to get some rest and remember that even if things go completely pear-shaped while you’re away, you should be able to get right back on track once you are home. What we believe We here at Educ8 SA+ believe in offering a consistent, tried and tested solution to parents who are concerned about not giving enough oversight and/or are too busy to give their homeschooled students the time and attention necessary to reach their full potential. What we aim for The homeschool/self-school journey, as wonderful as it is, is often overwhelming, leading parents and students to be stressed out and far from as focused, efficient, and productive as they can be. Instead of the often seen scenario where students have a great curriculum, but with no structure, they end up never reaching or achieving their full potential. We avoid that by providing structure, oversight, discipline, and a set calendar and schedule. School holidays and public holidays are stipulated on our Educ8 SA+ school calendar. Additional pros when choosing Educ8 SA+ We offer you, through our curriculum providers, the SAT prep course and micro courses. These courses are part of our scheduled learning paths to widen our student’s knowledge and to grow and develop their interests. There are many courses that students can complete and will pay for at the end once they have committed to obtaining the accreditation, wanting the credits and certificate that these courses offer. Should you want to complete any of these courses (terms and conditions apply) for self enrichment only, there are many courses that you have no obligation to pay for if you do not want the credits and certificate.  Every Friday, we give our students a break from scheduled school work. Don’t get too excited, this is not an OFF day. Educ8 SA+ uses Fridays as an opportunity to encourage and reward students for self improvement. Fridays are when students get the time to do courses and learn new skills that will help them open doors in their bright futures.  Zoom meetings or phone calls are available to our students should they need guidance on matters such as proper note taking, motivation, self-discipline, time management, etc. We firmly believe in not only corrective supervision, but adding to our students “toolbox” of life skills. This is done through interaction with our students via motivational conversations, virtual meetings, and 2 webinars every month on topics of self-improvement & self enrichment. KEEPING UP WITH THE JONESES’ CAN LAND YOU IN A FINANCIAL FIX

Peer pressure does not only affect impressionable teenagers – we all have an innate urge to evaluate our progress against those around us. As parents, we also want the best for our children, often going beyond our means to make this happen. Sending your child to one of the best public schools in the country can set you back R63 000 per year while elite private schools can cost north of R200 000. Trying to keep up with the Joneses can land you in deep financial difficulties. Adopting a few financial hacks, you can still give your children great opportunities without compromising your financial wellbeing. Ayanda Ndimande, Business Development Manager of Retail Credit at Sanlam says, “As parents, we are always on the lookout for the best ways, tools, and resources to raise our children. For first-time parents, this may mean feeling that you need to have the most expensive pram, the latest toys, must-have gadgets and clothes, only for the child to outgrow them in a few months. By reorientating that desire toward your child’s long-term prospects, you can help build a strong financial foundation that your children can use as a launchpad for their lives.” Taking advantage of these three simple tips can help you avoid debt traps, achieve your goals, if you feel as though you need to keep up with the Joneses.   Build a Healthy Relationship With Your Credit Score: If you’ve ever taken out a loan, registered a bond, applied for a credit card or even a cell phone contract, you’ll most likely have a credit score. Your score tells prospective lenders how much of a ‘risk’ you are in terms of your past debt repayment behaviour. It looks at your transactional records and gives you a score, ranking you as low, medium, or high risk. Your credit score is a living number that fluctuates depending on your debt repayment behaviour. The Sanlam Credit Dashboard allows you to do a free credit score check and credit coaches can help you to better understand and manage or improve your credit score. The pressure to keep up appearances can often lead people to take out loans or dip into their credit. Not all debt is bad but going into debt should be carefully considered and geared toward useful long-term benefits. Ndimande says, “Whilst trying to do the best for our kids, it helps to also have a longer-term view. Think about the financial position you want to be in in the future. Knowing your credit score will help you do this.”  Talk to Your Kids About Money: When we try to keep up with our peers, friends or colleagues we often end up spending without thinking and going deeper into unplanned debt. Your children learn life-long financial habits – both good and bad – by watching the way you manage your money. By speaking to your children about money, helping them track their spending and open savings accounts, you can equip them with the tools to be able to buy their toys and be more considerate when they do. The Sanlam Savings Jar app is a great way to do this.  Remember That Social Media isn’t Real Life: While it is entertaining, remember that social media is often a sanitised and curated view of people’s lives. Through the power of angles and filters, it is very easy to make things seem grander than they are. We often know little about people’s finances when we look at their posts. It is also important to be kind to yourself, we all have different goals and will take different financial paths to reach them. Ndimande concludes, “Not owning the latest gadget or sending your child to a school that costs a quarter of a million rand a year is not a reflection of your success. We all have different lives and needs and comparing ourselves to others can negatively affect our mental health. Shift your focus towards long-term goals and put the necessary plans in place to make them a reality.”

ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS: TIME TO RETHINK YOUR CHOICES?

Affinity Health, a leading provider of high-quality healthcare, explores the ongoing debate regarding whether the consumption of artificial sweeteners poses health hazards. If you’re trying to limit the amount of sugar and calories in your diet, you may resort to artificial sweeteners or other sugar replacements. Various foods and beverages labelled as “sugar-free” or “diet” contain artificial sweeteners and other sugar replacements, including soft drinks and baked goods. What are all these sugar substitutes? And what role do they play in your diet? Understanding artificial sweeteners and alternative sugars Sugar substitutes are sweeteners used in place of traditional sugar (sucrose). Artificial sweeteners are only one sort of sugar replacement. There are several sweeteners on the South African market, with Sorbitol, Xylitol, Acesulfame, Potassium, Aspartame, Saccharine, Stevia, and Sucralose being the most common. Mannitol and Maltitol are utilised in producing goods and are not sold separately as sweeteners. The pros and cons of artificial sweeteners Artificial sweeteners are chosen as an alternative to sugar because: They can be used in baking or cooking Artificial sweeteners have almost no calories and don’t cause weight gain They are not associated with tooth decay or cavities. They aren’t carbohydrates and generally don’t raise blood sugar levels. “For decades, artificial sweeteners have been the subject of intensive scrutiny,” says Murray Hewlett, CEO of Affinity Health. “Critics of artificial sweeteners assert that they contribute to numerous health issues, including cancer. However, according to the National Cancer Institute and other health agencies, no solid scientific evidence exists that any of the permitted artificial sweeteners cause cancer or other major health problems. Numerous studies demonstrate that, in moderation, artificial sweeteners are generally safe.” The Food and Drug Administration has defined an acceptable daily intake (ADI) for each artificial sweetener. The ADI is the maximum amount of a substance considered safe for daily consumption throughout a lifetime. It’s essential for consumers not to exceed the recommended ADI. Different Artificial Sweeteners  Aspartame Aspartame, a low-calorie sweetener created in 1965, tastes similar to sugar but is 200 times sweeter. It is unique among low-calorie sweeteners in that the body metabolises it to amino acids, aspartic acid, phenylalanine, and a minor quantity of ethanol. In 1981, aspartame was authorised by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for use in various foods. It has been hypothesised that aspartame’s interference with the function of rheumatoid factor can decrease joint pain and immobility caused by chronic inflammation. It has also been argued that aspartame’s components can cause various health issues, including increased susceptibility to seizures, behaviour, mood, or cognitive function. However, there are no solid indications that aspartame can cause these problems. Saccharin Saccharin was discovered more than a century ago. It is typically used to enhance the flavour of toothpaste, diet foods and beverages, as it is 300 to 500 times sweeter than sugar. According to limited studies, consuming saccharin-containing items may cause weight gain and obesity by interfering with core homeostatic and physiological processes. However, on the whole, sucralose is deemed safe for all population segments, including those with chronic health conditions such as diabetes. Acesulfame Potassium Acesulfame Potassium is a non-caloric sweetener found in numerous products. The US FDA approved acesulfame K for non-alcoholic beverages in 1998 and awarded permission for general use in 2003. The Joint Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA), a scientific advisory council for the World Health Organization and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, assessed the evidence and found that acesulfame K is safe. Neotame Neotame is a no-calorie sweetener derived from the dipeptide composed of aspartic acid and phenylalanine amino acids. The components of neotame are combined to create a distinct sweetener. Neotame is approximately 8000 times sweeter than table sugar and 40 times sweeter than aspartame. Neotame is chemically similar to aspartame but more chemically stable, making it suitable for usage in baked goods. However, it may also be employed as a flavouring agent in other types of food. It was approved by the U.S. FDA in 2002, although its use is still uncommon. Stevia Stevia is produced from the South American herb Stevia Rebaudiana, which has been used to sweeten liquids and create tea in Paraguay for generations. Rebaudioside A is one sweetening chemical found in the stevia plant. The steviol glycosides meet the JECFA’s purity requirements (WHO). The clinical investigations demonstrate that stevia sweeteners do not influence blood pressure or blood glucose response, indicating they are safe for people with diabetes to consume. Recent studies, including human intake, metabolism, and toxicity studies, support the safety of stevia sweeteners. Based on published research, independent scientific experts from the United States and worldwide have agreed that stevia sweeteners are safe for persons of all ages. Stevia has an extremely low acute toxicity and no known adverse responses. Conclusion Several scientific studies are conducted to determine the safety of artificial sweeteners, which regulatory agencies subsequently approve. Some substances are also approved with warning labels. “If you’re concerned about whether an artificial sweetener is safe and its potential side effects, always read the warnings and recommended daily allowance on the product. Consult your healthcare provider if you have any questions or concerns,” concludes Hewlett.

WHY IS PROSTATE CANCER SO COMMON IN MALES?

According to Affinity Health, a leading provider of high-quality healthcare, while prostate cancer primarily affects men over the age of 65, it can strike earlier, especially if you have a family history of prostate cancer. What Is Prostate Cancer? Prostate cancer is cancer that occurs in the prostate. In males, the prostate is a small walnut-shaped gland that produces seminal fluid, which nourishes and transports sperm. Prostate cancer is one of the most common types of cancer. Many prostate cancers are slow-growing and limited to the prostate gland, where they may not cause significant harm. While some prostate cancers grow slowly and require little or no treatment, others are aggressive and spread rapidly. Early detection of prostate cancer, while still confined to the prostate gland, gives the best chance of successful treatment. Who Is Predisposed to Prostate Cancer? Every man is at risk of prostate cancer, but some factors contribute to the risk. Age: The most critical risk factor for prostate cancer is age. Men aged 65 and older account for roughly two-thirds of all prostate cancer diagnoses. However, as you age, the disease becomes less aggressive, especially after age 70. Family History: Men with a history of prostate cancer are at a higher risk. Having a father or brother with the disease doubles your chances of getting it. When multiple family members are affected, your chances increase. Race: Black men are about 60% more likely than white men to develop prostate cancer. When cancer is diagnosed, it is more likely to be advanced. Doctors aren’t sure why different races have different rates of prostate cancer, but they believe environmental factors are to blame. Diets High In Fat: Dietary fat may also be linked to prostate cancer. Men in high-fat diet countries eat fewer fruits and vegetables. The disease is much more prevalent in countries where meat and dairy products dominate the diet, as opposed to those where rice, soybean products, and vegetables are the primary staples. Obesity: Extra weight does not appear to increase your chances of developing prostate cancer. However, it may reduce your chances of getting a lower-grade type and increase your chances of getting an aggressive form. Although not all study findings agree, some evidence suggests that obese men are more likely to have advanced prostate cancer and die from it. Sedentary Way of Life: Although there haven’t been many studies to determine how closely a lack of physical activity is linked to prostate cancer, it has been shown to play a role in other types of cancer, including colon and endometrial cancer. However, because a lack of physical activity is frequently associated with obesity and metabolic syndrome, there may also be a link between it and prostate cancer. Changes in the BRCA1 or BRCA2 Gene: These are what your doctor may refer to as mutations. Because you are born with them, they are risk factors over which you have no control. They run in families, but only a few people are affected. They increase the likelihood of breast and ovarian cancer in women, as well as prostate cancer in some men. Lynch Syndrome: Lynch syndrome, also known as hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC), is caused by a gene change that occurs at birth. It can increase your chances of getting a variety of cancers, including prostate cancer. Signs and Symptoms While most prostate cancers are asymptomatic, the following symptoms and signs of prostate cancer may occur: Urine flow that is weak or interrupted, or the need to strain to empty the bladder Urge to urinate frequently during the night Urine with blood Erectile dysfunction Urinary pain or burning An enlarged prostate (that causes discomfort or pain when sitting) Back, hip, thigh, shoulder, or other bone pain Leg or foot swelling or fluid buildup Unknown cause of weight loss Fatigue Alteration in bowel habits If you are concerned about any changes you are experiencing, please consult your doctor. Your doctor will ask you how long and frequently you have been experiencing the symptom, among other things (s). Diagnosis is made to assist in determining the cause of the problem. Screening For Prostate Cancer  A digital rectal examination or finger test is the only way for a doctor to examine your prostate. To check the size of the prostate and for lumps, a doctor must insert a gloved, lubricated finger into the rectum and press the bowel wall, this is unpleasant, but a minute of discomfort can save your life. The prostate exam is the most effective screening test for prostate cancer. Screening should begin at the age of 40 if you have a family history of prostate cancer. If you are not at high risk, you should start screening at the age of 50, unless you have any of the warning signs, in which case you should begin screening right away,” says Murray Hewlett, CEO of Affinity Health. Treatment Of Prostate Cancer  Prostate cancer treatment options include surgery, radiation, and hormone therapy, which can be used alone or in combination. “Treatment is highly individualised and is planned according to clinical findings. The earlier prostate cancer is detected, the better the prognosis,” concludes Hewlett.

Are you financially prepared for a crisis?

Every one of us has lost sleep at some point over the possibility of experiencing a significant adverse event that could have an impact on our stability and security. Evolution has ingrained it on us that we need to always be prepared for calamity to strike. In our modern world such an event might include losing your job unexpectedly, becoming ill or even being involved in a car accident. While none of us could predict these types of events, we can deal with them far better if we’re well prepared. Edwin Theron, CEO at digital insurance provider Sanlam Indie says: “You might be doing a great job of preparing your financial future, but a significant accident or other unanticipated occurrence could turn your financial fortunes upside down.” He says that planning for a disaster, whether financial or health related, is just as crucial as saving for the future. Below, we’ll discuss five of best strategies to get ready for a financial emergency: 1. Emergency funds Saving money is difficult to prioritise, but we are all aware that doing so is necessary to be ready for a personal financial emergency. Automating your savings is the simplest approach to guarantee that you do it each month. You might be tempted to dip into your savings every now and then, but you should really aim to keep an emergency reserve for when a money crisis hits. Note: A common rule of thumb is to aim to have about 3 months’ worth of salary available as an emergency reserve 2. Make a budget Many people who have struggled with budgeting see it as a burden that prevents them from enjoying life. A budget does not ensure that you will spend less money, but it can help you decide and give you relevant information that can aid in deciding how to spend your money. You can have a plan for where every rand is going if you set limitations and keep track of your spending. After that, make any necessary modifications. Perhaps you discover that sticking to a budget results in a little extra each month; this may be a sign that you can comfortably increase your monthly savings contribution. 3. Reduce monthly expenses Keeping a handle on your monthly expenses should be a priority even outside of a crisis. Perhaps you have a habit of keeping the lights on in unoccupied rooms or letting the heater or air conditioner run while you aren’t at home. Consider your cell phone plan, auto insurance, memberships, subscriptions, and streaming services. Even though they might not seem like much on their own, when added up, they can significantly lower your monthly spending and make you more resilient when disaster strikes. Note: Consider more affordable plans for your needs by getting in touch with the providers of your plans and comparison shopping with other providers. 4. Manage your debt Debt can pile up quickly, especially high-interest debt like credit cards. Make a strategy to pay off your debts, such as card balances, personal loans, and student loans, so that you may put that money in your own pocket. Always make the minimum payments on all accounts to maintain your credit and keep your accounts open. 5. Get insurance It can be easy to put off getting any kind of insurance as it may seem like an additional expense and an unnecessary amount of messy paperwork. Insurance is designed to help alleviate pressure in the case of adverse events though and helps you have sufficient reserves when your own savings aren’t sufficient. This is especially for large life events like a serious illness or a bad accident. The Sanlam Indie Plan is the easiest way to find out what life insurance you need, and don’t need, in under 10 minutes. Note: Always ensure your needs are understood so you get the right cover at the right price. Nobody can forecast a personal financial disaster, but planning can limit its effects and lessen the stress and anxiety that comes with it. By setting aside money and controlling your debt and income, you can be ready for both anticipated and unforeseen expenses. You’ll be able to exhale a little easier the next time a financial crisis strikes. www.sanlamindie.co.za

Five summer grooming tips for men

If your skin and hair needs a little bit of TLC by the time summer comes around, you’re not alone. Winter can be harsh on skin and it’s not unusual to experience dryness or dehydration when the temperature drops. This is largely due to the low humidity we experience during winter. When humidity drops, the air draws moisture from anything around it, including our hair and skin. If this moisture isn’t replenished, our hair may dry out, become brittle and break, and our skin may become dry, flaky and sensitive. As we move into summer, you may want to ramp up your daily grooming regime to ensure you replenish the moisture lost during winter and prepare your skin and facial hair to better survive the heat. Here are five grooming tips to ensure you look your best this summer: Cleanse twice a day Cleansing is an essential part of your daily grooming routine, especially during summer. Your face and beard may get sweaty during the day, so ensure you always wash your face thoroughly before bed and when you wake up in the morning to ensure you remove oil and impurities. Skipping this crucial step may lead to breakouts and blackheads. FINO MAN Gel Face and Beard Wash (R79.99) gently removes daily impurities and promotes soft and moisturised skin whilst protecting against ingrown hair and bumps. It is soap-free and has a light gel texture that gently yet thoroughly cleanses the skin and beard. Consider growing a beard Did you know that beards protect skin from harmful UV rays? Studies have shown that that beards act like physical barriers between your skin and the sun, meaning you’re protected from harmful UVA and UVB rays (but don’t forget to apply SPF to the rest of your face though!). They also have the ability to keep you cool and protect your skin from the harsh effects of wind (think Cape Town’s South Easter!). Plus, a lot of women find beards very attractive (and who can blame them?!). Moisturise with an oil Oils are not just for winter – they have the ability to moisturise skin and hair all year long. Did you know that some beard oils are not just super moisturising for facial hair, but they also moisturise the skin beneath the beard? Apply a good quality beard oil to your facial hair twice a day for maximum moisturising benefits. Try FINO Beard Oil (R139.00). This multipurpose product is a blend of non-greasy natural carrier oils and healing essential oils that nourish and moisturise the beard as well as the skin underneath. It can be used daily for a softer and more manageable beard, and it also makes the perfect shaving oil, plus it protects against dry and flaky skin under the beard. Keep bumps under control Whether you’re going bare and shaving regularly, or just shaping your facial hair to keep it neat and tidy, chances are you may experience some razor bumps and discomfort from time to time. FINO Bump Control (R76.99) is a low-irritant, dermatologically-tested rescue serum that reduces the appearance of razor bumps. This handy pump bottle contains a blend of natural tea tree oil, astringents and moisturisers that leave skin feeling smooth, looking good and healthy. It is easy to apply and can be used on the beard area and head after wet or dry shaving. Don’t fall victim to ingrown hair No matter what your hair or skin type, anyone can get ingrown hairs. While these can be painful, itchy and unsightly, they may also become more serious if not treated. They may lead to bacterial infections, scars and hyperpigmentation. To avoid ingrown hair, try FINO Soothe MAN (R61.99). This non-irritant, dermatologically-tested handy balm helps combat ingrown hair, razor bumps and burn after shaving. It is quickly absorbed and moisturizing and also relieves the irritation and redness while reducing itchiness associated with new hair growth. A synergistic blend of vitamin A and fruit enzymes exfoliate, moisturise and purify the skin, preventing infections. FINO products are suitable for use on all skin types and skin tones and are proudly manufactured in South Africa. However you plan on styling your facial hair this summer, we recommend FINO’s comprehensive grooming range to keep your beard, stubble and skin healthy, clean and soft. www.finocosmetics.com https://www.instagram.com/finocosmetics/ https://www.facebook.com/finocosmeticsman/

Top 5 health tips for a holiday that won’t cramp your style

Candice Chirwa is an author, gender activist, and thought leader affectionately known as the Minister of Menstruation due to the incredible work she has done around period poverty and educating girls about period hygiene. Since 2021 she has helped the Salome range by participating in their campaigns aimed at removing the stigma attached to menstruation. Together with Salome, Candice shares her top tips to get you ready for a stress-free holiday that won’t cramp your style.    Period fatigue is real – so rest  I would highly recommend that you get your rest in. Year-end fatigue is real and so is period fatigue, and it is important to not skip out on any form of rest especially during the holiday season. Make it your goal to get eight to nine hours of sleep throughout the holiday season. Heavy menstrual bleeders, we’ve got you too! Everyone has different methods of handling period pain. For some, it’s using hot water bottles and applying it directly to their abdomen, for others it’s exercising that helps reduce menstrual cramping. I do suggest that menstruators opt for comfort during this season. Avoid wearing tight clothing and instead choose to wear loose clothes during the summer. For heavy menstrual bleeders, I’d also recommend using period products that last for 12 hours such as night time pads, menstrual cups, period underwear and tampons. Busting a holiday myth – period One myth that some people still believe in is that you shouldn’t swim when having your period. I believe in the exact opposite and would highly recommend going for a gentle exercise, like swimming, to keep you cool and to release endorphins which is nature’s own pain reliever. If you’d like something more intense and a cardio burner to help manage period pain, a hike is a sure way to manage the pain and keep your PMS mood swings away. Any low-stress exercise such as dancing and yoga stretches can make you and your body feel happier. Be careful of what you are eating Stay away from foods that can cause bloating such as dairy and foods that contain a lot of sodium. It can be difficult to make healthy choices when braai food and sugar treats are in readily available during the festive season. However, when it comes to your period it is a good time to remain hydrated.  Go for herbal extract solutions There are definitely benefits to using herbal based medicine that relieves menstrual cramps. A particular pro, is that ranges like the Salome range have minimal side effects that can impede on your daily holiday activities. I also find using natural treatment options to be a healthier route that is unlikely to lead to gastric issues. The Salome range, launched in 2020 by South African pharmaceutical company 3Sixty Biomedicine, addresses common women’s health issues. In 2022 Salome expanded its herbal extract based range to include products that assist with managing symptoms commonly associated with menopause and for the relief of minor symptoms in the days before menstruation (premenstrual syndrome). Now the current product range based on herbal extracts offers over the counter treatment options that help manage heavy menstrual bleeding, menstrual pain, premenstrual syndrome, menopause, Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) and infertility linked to PCOS.  The full Salome range that contains natural ingredients is available online at Takealot.com and www.salome-range.co.za, as well as over the counter at most pharmacies nationwide. Singing into the Silly Season

The silly season is definitely in fully swing!  I can tell that because of the look of slight panic on the faces of the parents and teachers around me.  In fact, who am I kidding?  I can see it when I look in the mirror!  I call it my “rabbit in the headlights” look.   It’s the look of a busy, working parent who has forgotten how crazy this time of year can be.  Exams, school concerts, gifts for teachers, paperwork for next year, tired children, tired parents, weary household!  My theory is that we’ve all forgotten what life was like before COVID.  We got lulled into a false sense of quietness. Just like the dolphins that returned to the canals in Venice during lockdown, so some sense of calm returned to our schedules during that season.  We were juggling a lot less when COVID imposed limitations on your everyday lives.   That was 2020 and 2021.  But, 2022 has hit us all like a ton of bricks.  We’re back in the full swing of things, and we’re just not used to it anymore.  Or is that just me? The bottom line though, is that we can’t avoid it.  The bottle neck of work, school, tiredness, end-of-year busyness all collide at this time of year, and we find ourselves scrambling towards the finish line as the year comes to an end. We need to find ways to enjoy this season and to slow down when we can.  Not just for our own sake, but for the sake of our partners, children and others living in our homes. I’m a musician, so I’m suggesting that we all start singing more!  Let’s SING our way into the silly season, throughout the season and into next year. Here are my top three reasons to sing more: Singing improves your mood Belting out your favourite tune increases lung capacity, driving oxygen to your cells, and in turn, helps to lift your mood.  Whether it’s in the shower, while driving the car or cooking a meal.  Music helps!  Add a little bit of movement and suddenly you’re onto even more of a winner! Singing relieves stress In 2015, the Centre for Performance at the Royal College of Music in London, performed a study to measure the effects of singing on cortisol levels (the stress hormone).  They found that singing helped to reduce cortisol levels over time.  That’s persuasive enough … you don’t need to tell me twice! Singing brings people together It’s no accident that people usually sing in groups at a sports event, church service or birthday party.  Music and singing brings people together.  So, encourage your family to sing together in the car.  Encourage your children to listen to music and sing along and model this to them with your own enthusiasm.  You don’t have to have an amazing voice or even sing in tune, just sing with joy and gusto! With the festive season upon us, there’s never a better time of year to SING!  Let music carry you along in this “silly season”.  Build memories with your family and let your favourite music become the soundtrack of those memories. Because we all know that music attaches to our memory in a very real and special way!  But more about that here Musical resources Wriggle and Rhyme has a range of musical stories which you can access on your favourite streaming service (Apple music, Spotify, iTunes, etc.) or take a look at www.wriggleandrhyme.co.za/our-music . We also have fun, musical episodes on our YOUTUBE channel “Wriggle & Rhyme SA”. Our baby and toddler music classes are available in Cape Town – RONDEBOSCH, CLAREMONT, MELKBOSSTRAND and MEADOWRIDGE. Date Night!!

What is a “Date Night”? Date Nights can also be “Date Days,” but the key idea is that the couple is spending time as a couple and not as unstructured “family time.”   Date Night builds stronger marriages in five ways:  (1) Communication. Date Night helps with communication. Of course, this is an essential element of an intimate relationship. But communication also involves the willingness to remove distractions such as children and career demands deliberately. Date Nights also offers couples the opportunity to discuss topics of mutual importance.  They can self-define and dialogue about mutual aspirations. Communication is like a muscle. Sometimes you plan your communication workouts. “stress-reducing” conversation can help couples to stay current with what is moving through their intimate partner’s life. (2) Novelty. Couples typically experience habituation, a “settling in” quality where both are more likely to take each other for granted. The symbiotic “we are a couple” sensibility can settle into an ordinary domestic routine. But new research indicates that a deficit in fun and novelty is toxic. A balance of activities is attractive to both, which emphasises novel and different experiences can help increase intimacy. (3) Let’s Do It. Romantic love is that erotic spark, excitement, and an overwhelming sense of attraction to your significant other. But with time, the emotional and physical expression of erotic love tends to fade in many couples. Because Date Night allows a couple to focus on their connection completely, the erotic spark may be restored by the intentional pursuit of romance, novelty, and more in-depth communication. Date Nights may not only rekindle the romance, but regular Date Nights can also help sustain the fires of love over the long haul. (4) De-Stress. Couples that have regular Date Nights maintain a connection through intimate conversation and emotional support. They also lower the stress on their brains, as well as their partners. Fortunately, nature has endowed us with high resiliency in this area. (5) Abiding Relationship Commitment.  When you experience your partner’s commitment, your sense of being firmly attached will provide you with a stable, deeply satisfying relationship. Partners who cherish and prize each other, steer clear of other romantic opportunities, and nurture a powerful sense of “we-ness” or togetherness are significantly happier than less-committed, “iffy” couples. Commitment is scary. But commitment satisfies deeply. Oh no!!!! What about the kids??? You want to go on a date. But what about the kids? But I bet you know other couples that would also like to go out on a date. Tell your friends that you’ll watch their kids while they go out if they will do the same for you on your date. You can swap babysitting services, enjoy your date, and get your babysitter  free! It doesn’t get any cheaper than free! If you live near your family, ask them if they could watch your kids this weekend while the two of you try out new date night experiences. If you don’t live close to your parents, consider asking them to babysit for a night when they visit.  While you want to spend time with them, they also want to see their grandkids. Come to think of it, Grandma and Grandpa might have their own version of Date Night, enjoying their grandchildren together. Daniel Dashnaw Revised 5/13/19 Couples Need to Feel Connected As parents carry the stress and burden of providing for a family, sleep needs are not always met, and as kids demand all the attention, feelings of connectedness can quickly become lost. As a result, parents feel run down, and their identity as a couple becomes lost in their roles as parents. Being a mom or dad is certainly an identity to be proud of, but couples need to be able to find ways to connect again outside of their parental duties. A date night is a perfect opportunity to spend time together engaging in hobbies or volunteer opportunities that you both once found to be of common interest. Engaging in shared interests and having an opportunity to talk about things that draw you closer to each other are undoubtedly essential priorities to make in your marriage. Kids Need to See a Healthy Relationship While a date night is meant to be about your marriage, it is good for the kids. It is healthy for them to learn it’s OK to be separated from you, but it is beneficial as they grow up to witness a healthy relationship. Think about how you want your son and daughter treated in their marriage. There is a significant advantage to children learning the importance of a loving marriage. Excuses Need to Go Away Granted, childcare expenses can quickly become budget killers, especially when you calculate in multiple kids. However, plan for these expenses as part of your monthly budget (perhaps sacrificing less important expenditures to add these). Then, you won’t have the excuse of not being able to afford a date night. Also, if all your date night budget goes into the child care costs, you can get creative with cheaper dates such as picnics, walks through a park, or budget movies. New ULTIMALT: Providing the Benefits of Malt to Mothers

With the world moving towards an emphasis on health, an increased focus is placed on the importance of breastfeeding for both mothers and infants, and awareness has grown around the delicious alcohol-free malt beverages that are now available to enhance health for expecting and lactating mothers such as ULTIMALT, a favourite new malt beverage recently launched in South Africa. Humans have consumed barley for thousands of years with good reason. The medicinal effects of the barley grain, from which barley malt extract is derived have long been recognized in Africa and Asia, and now malt’s complete nutritional properties are confirmed by nutritional science. Barley malt contains protein, essential amino acids, soluble fibres, vitamins B1, B2, B6 and B612, and other micro minerals. It is also one of the richest dietary sources of beta-glucan, a polysaccharide that has been shown to increase prolactin, the hormone responsible for lactation.  This not only makes barley malt highly nutritious, but when enjoyed 90 minutes prior to breastfeeding, promotes an increase in milk production. Malt drinks are well known to be both wholesome and highly nutritious, while providing some protein, sugar, essential minerals and levels of vitamins A and B vitamins. It also provides the all-important folic acid that is beneficial during both pregnancy and breastfeeding and plays an important role in the maintenance of the gut microbiome. A healthy Diet During Pregnancy A healthy diet during pregnancy helps to support the mother’s wellbeing and supplies the nutrition the baby needs to develop and grow. As a general guide, pregnant mothers need to eat a healthy diet, high in nutrients and low in sugar, salt, and saturated fats with an extra total of about 300 calories for the additional energy expenditure and nutritional needs. Fresh fruits, healthy fats such as avocado and salmon, free range and pasture fed meats, fresh vegetables such as leafy greens, and other folate and vitamin boosting foods such as malt barley, conveniently packaged in malt beverages such as ULTIMALT. The Consumption of Alcohol During Pregnancy & Breastfeeding  Sadly, South Africa has the highest prevalence of Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) than anywhere else in the world with 111.1 instances per 1 000 children (the global average is 7.7) which is a result of expecting mothers consuming alcohol. Alcohol crosses the blood barrier and travels into the unborn foetus wreaking havoc of stillbirth, miscarriage or a range of disabilities that are classified under the term FASD. Lactating mothers are further adversely affected by consuming alcohol which is absorbed from their blood into their breastmilk. Consuming alcohol while breastfeeding can lead to several ill effects such as: Impaired milk production in the mother Disturbed milk ejection reflex in the mother Sleep disturbances for baby Increased crying for baby Increased startling for baby Decreased milk intake by baby Decreased weight gain by baby   However, consuming a malt beverage such as ULTIMALT delivers a nutritious punch of vitamins, proteins, and other components, without any of the disadvantages – for both pregnant and breastfeeding mothers. Breastfeeding is the ultimate milk for a baby as it supplies all the necessary nutrients for optimum infant health in the proper proportions. It protects against allergies, sickness, and obesity. It protects against diseases such as cancer, and even against infections, like ear infections. Of course, many mothers are not able to breastfeed for a variety of health or personal reasons, however if naturally able to breastfeed, breastmilk is the safest and healthiest food for the first six months of life for all children everywhere. ULTIMALT is brewed using an authentic African recipe, with the most advanced western brewing processes. The result is a tastier, healthier & lighter malt drink. Tastier as an authentic and exclusive African recipe is used, unlike other sugary drinks that can leave an aftertaste in the mouth. Lighter as no refined sugar is added in the brewing process. Healthier as it contains natural sugar from barley and fructose from fruit.

Bonitas – innovation, life stages and quality care

The Gift of Hearing

‘Blindness cuts us off from things but deafness cuts us off from people’ [Helen Keller] Hearing loss is more common than we think, up to 19% of South African school children suffer from varying degrees of hearing difficulties.  Hearing is the foundation for speech and language development as well as learning and communication.  The long-term impact of losing one of the key senses has a major impact on the quality of life.  Early detection and treatment is vital and it’s important to conduct hearing tests throughout a child’s schooling. However, the reality is that many learners have limited or no access to audiological screening and treatment. To address this important health issue and close the gap on hearing impediments, Bonitas Medical Fund has partnered with humanitarian aid organisation, Gift of the Givers, on a project that will initially screen around 15 860 learners during 2023.  ‘The Gift of the Givers Foundation is internationally recognised for its swift disaster response, community support and healthcare interventions,’ says Lee Callakoppen, Principal Officer at Bonitas. ‘We are truly excited by this partnership and we know this ambitious project will have a profound impact on so many lives.’   The importance of hearing tests According to the South African National Deaf Association (SANDA), children should have their hearing tested several times throughout their schooling: When they enter school, at ages 6, 8 and 10 and at least once during Grades 8 or 9 and Grades 10 and 12. This audiology project, which is being rolled out over a 10-month period, will initially test around 15 860 learners across Grade R to Grade 12 at various schools located in six areas in KZN: Umlazi, Indanda, Chatsworth, Phoenix, Marionhill and Durban central. The plan is to expand the project to other Provinces. Screening practicalities A South African manufactured portable audiometer, called the Kuduwave, will be used for the project. This state-of-the-art, medically certified device has revolutionised the testing and diagnosis of auditory related deficiencies. It combines a headset, audiometer and sound booth into a single, lightweight device, which can be used in just about any location.  This means the audiology team can test learners at school. ‘Two Kuduwave units will be used to increase capacity and reduce downtime,’ explains the audiology team at Gift of the Givers.   The programme is being overseen by an ear, nose and throat surgeon as well as an audiologist and speech therapist. They will provide training, consultation and oversight for the audiology team conducting the screenings. ‘Each test takes between 5 and 15 minutes,’ explains Gift of the Givers audiology team. ‘During which time the learner’s middle ear will be pressure tested for ear infections and ears will also be checked for inflammation and earwax. Diagnostics and after-care If the screening fails, a full diagnostic test will be undertaken. ‘This project not only covers the screening but goes a step further and offers an after-care element.  This includes follow-up medical treatment, if required, to ensure learners receive the assistance they need so that their development is not delayed,’ explains the audiology team. ‘I cannot even begin to imagine a life without sound,’ says Callakoppen.  ‘Not hearing someone’s voice, the lyrics of a song, rain falling on a roof or laughter. As a medical aid we advocate for prevention through early screening, detection and treatment for any ailment – including hearing.’

The Bridge Assisted Learning School

An Argument for an Assisted Learning School

What does assisted learning mean? The child will still follow a mainstream curriculum, but will be assisted in the following ways: The manner of the teaching of a lesson. The experience or qualifications of the teacher. Accommodations or concessions: Reader, scribe, extra time, prompt, devices – apps. Neurodiversity Neurodiversity is an approach to learning and disability that argues that diverse neurological conditions are the result of normal variations in the human genome. Neurological differences should be recognized and respected as a social category on a par with gender, or sexual orientation. Neurological variations are a vital part of humanity, as much as variations in size, shape, skin colour, and personality. Should we tell a person with limited learning potential that there is no place for them in this world? Should we tell a person with strong learning potential that there is no place for them? What process is followed to identify an appropriate learner for a learning-assisted environment? Extensive evaluation by an Educational Psychologist in order to identify: Learning potential. Barriers to learning. Possible areas of intervention for the learner. Interview with parents in order to discover their journey to date. Visitation of a number of days at our school to establish social interaction, emotional development, behaviour/coping development. Feedback to the parents and child. Neurodiversity in the school environment By following a Neurodiverse approach at our school, our students with learning and thinking differences benefit greatly. Our goal is to ensure that our approach will allow for an individual style, rather than trying to fit the child into another person’s style. It is therefore a massive part of our educational approach that we eliminate or at least reduce greatly, the outdated stigmas and perceptions around learning and thinking differences. What is the difference between a learning-assisted environment and a strictly remedial environment? A remedial environment may include a facilitator. A remedial environment could include a change in curriculum. A learning-assisted environment does not include facilitators. A learning-assisted environment always follows a mainstream curriculum: Caps, IEB, etc. The rainbow infinity symbol, which denotes neurodiversity

How changing seasons can affect your skin and hair

Each season poses unique beauty challenges, and it sometimes feels like as soon as you’ve mastered that season’s challenges, the weather turns and it’s time to get onto the next one. Often more challenging than the new season itself, is the in-between stage where the season is busy changing. The transition period from winter to spring is usually a welcome one, however, it can have a big effect on your skin and hair. For instance, you may find your skin feeling dry or tight, if you struggle with breakouts you may notice they’re more inflamed than usual. The increase in humidity as we head into spring can also have an impact on our hair. Increased humidity can lead to more frizz and impact our hair’s manageability. While there’s nothing we can do about this transitional period, there is plenty we can do to counteract the effects it may have on our hair and skin. Follow our advice for healthier and happier hair and skin as we head into spring. Why does changing seasons affect our skin? Think of your skin as a creature of habit – it loves consistency. When its environment changes, it has to work harder to maintain moisture and has to adjust to new demands. In the process, the barrier function may become disrupted, you may be prone to inflammation and your hydration levels may drop. When we transition from winter to spring, your skin needs to adapt to warmer weather and higher humidity levels. This can often leave the skin feeling greasy as more oil gets trapped on the surface of the skin (which, in turn, can lead to more breakouts and clogged pores). How can we counteract these effects? To keep skin healthy, happy and blemish-free as we head into spring, it’s important to control excess sebum and exfoliate regularly. The two best ingredients to achieve this are glycolic acid and salicylic acid. Glycolic acid is an alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) that helps to separate the connections between skin cells in the outer layers of the skin, promoting exfoliation and skin cell turnover. It is effective in fighting breakouts and acne, reducing fine lines and wrinkles, removing dead skin cells and improving tone. NIP+FAB’s Glycolic Fix range is designed to assist in dissolving dead skin cells, refining skin texture and tone, stimulating collagen production and boosting luminosity. Cleanse twice a day with NIP+FAB Glycolic Fix Cleanser(R149.95) to remove all traces of dirt and impurities while giving the skin a boost and retexturising it. Follow with NIP+FAB Glycolic Fix Serum (R295.00) and NIP+FAB Glycolic Fix Moisturiser (R249.95), a powerful duo that work together to refine pores, smooth the skin’s texture, provide oil-free moisture and to control excess oil production. Exfoliate daily with NIP+FAB Glycolic Fix Daily Cleansing Pads (R379.95). Soaked in exfoliating glycolic acid, these biodegradable, radiance-boosting pads are formulated to retexture, resurface and treat breakouts. Salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) exfoliates the skin and helps clear and unclog pores. It is popularly used to treat acne, breakouts and blackheads and helps reduce redness and swelling of inflamed spots. It also helps soften and loosen dry skin so that it can be shed more easily. Creightons Salicylic Acid Foaming Clay Cleanser (R75.95) combines kaolin clay with salicylic and lactic acids to help absorb excess oil and maintain healthier, clearer looking skin. Follow with Creightons Salicylic Acid Exfoliating Tonic (R99.95) makes use of salicylic acid and niacinamide to improve an uneven skin tone and texture, leaving skin brighter and healthier. Twice a day, apply Creightons Salicylic Acid Face Serum (R104.95) and Creightons Salicylic Acid Soothing Lotion (R69.95). Together, they help reduce the appearance of blackheads, blemishes and pores; for a clearer, more radiant complexion while offering lightweight moisture. Why does changing seasons affect our hair? Humidity has a major impact on the texture and manageability of our hair. The higher the humidity, the more likely you are to experience frizz. Our hair contains bonds known as “hydrogen bonds.” These bonds are weak, and can be broken by water and reset when drying (this is why we can set our hair into different styles with styling tools). These bonds are also broken by water in the atmosphere (aka humidity), and then reset themselves, which is why you’re likely to experience kinks and frizz throughout the day. Your hair and scalp may also appear greasier as the warmer weather sets in, even though your hair may feel drier due to exposure to warmer weather. It’s important to remember that not everyone will experience the same changes when the new season sets in. How can we counteract these effects? Your hair care regime for the transitional season is two-fold: you need to pay attention to your scalp as well as to your hair. For greasy hair: Wash your hair regularly with a gentle shampoo that effectively removes grease without drying out your scalp. We recommend Curls in Bloom Cleanse Me! Sulphate-Free Shampoo (R99.95). It effectively cleanses and removes product build-up and dirt without stripping the hair and scalp of its natural oils. For dry hair: Invest in a creamy shampoo that adds moisture to your hair and scalp like The Perfect Hair’s newly-launched Grow on the Go Conditioning Wash (R99.99). Specially formulated for very dry hair, this conditioning wash is enriched with castor oil, shea butter and Pro-Vitamin B5. Scalp care is essential, no matter what your hair concerns. If your scalp gets dry or itchy, apply Nilotiqa Shea & Coco Anti-Itch Hair & Scalp Spray (R99.99) daily or every second day. It is rich and creamy, provides natural hair with optimum moisture from the root and soothes a dry, itchy scalp for up to 48 hours. If you want to stimulate healthy hair growth and base your scalp, use Cantu’s Shea Butter Tea Tree & Jojoba Hair & Scalp Oil (R175.00). It uses the power of some of nature’s most moisturising oils to help protect dry and damaged hair from breakage. It also conditions the scalp to support

Green Beauty Tips & Hacks for Living in Sync with Nature

With green living the hot topic of the sustainable century, you have probably been wondering how to switch to a more ecological beauty regime at home. Firstly, thank you for thinking about the planet and spreading kindness, no one wants a beauty regime the creates ugly problems for Gaia and the future of our world. The good news is that you don’t have to give up your lifestyle to be sustainable, it simply comes down to finding better alternatives. The key to making sustainable choices is understanding why your choices matter and, here’s the wrap… they really really do! Here are 5 eco-hacks and clean beauty tips you can adopt right now as you revamp your personal beauty routine to a greener lifestyle: 1. Change the Way you Shop Buy ethically, buy locally and choose products which use fewer toxic chemicals, or which are 100% earth-friendly, such as Earthsap’s pure natural range of beauty products for him and her which are not only affordable but easy to use. Fragrant and natural, choose from face and body washes, shampoo and conditioner, roll on, toothpaste, toner, foam bath, aftershave cream and balm, foot powder and nature’s jelly. #LiveGreenLifeHack We love the luxurious and invigorating Earthsap Citrus & Ginger Body Wash to shower you with energy at the start of your day. Its sensational natural ingredients include coconut to hydrate your skin, grapefruit and ginger to stimulate circulation and get the blood flowing and a non-toxic cleanse to rejuvenate you. You’ll find no synthetic fragrances, irritants or allergens in Earthsap’ s body care products; they’re non-toxic and gentle, ethically produced and not tested on animals. 2. Recycle Reckoning There is no point switching to a more sustainable beauty regime if we are not recycling the produce packaging correctly. While most of us are pretty good at recycling our kitchen waste, we tend to fall behind when it comes to our bathroom and dressing room habits. Get a recycle bin for your bathroom or dressing counter and keep up the green work. #LiveGreenLifeHack Instead of using single use face wipes and cotton pads, use a hot cloth cleanse to remove your makeup. 3. Waste Not, Want Not Before recycling your empty beauty products when they start to run out, ensure you have used all the product in the dispenser, jar or serum dropper. This can be difficult especially when beauty packaging creates creams, serums and dispensers have been designed and sealed to keep the air getting to the product and reducing its potency. #LiveGreenLifeHack Keep pliers or sturdy pair of scissors handy so you can open and separate the dispenser part from the body of the product and get the last drop out. 4.  Silicone Savvy Get silicone savvy and save the environment. Silicone is everywhere but especially in hair conditioners, body lotions and face creams; it does not break down in the environment and may even be a hormone disruptor. It delivers smooth, slidable texture, glossy sheen and fills in pores and fine lines but it is literally a liquid plastic similar to the silicone you use to seal your shower stall. Using silicone can cause congestions and create a moisture barrier on your skin and hair. Using an organic product can deliver the same effect without the damage. #LiveGreenLifeHack Make a homemade hair gloss by mixing one tablespoon of coconut oil with one tablespoon honey, heat gently until liquid, apply and leave on for 20 minutes before rinsing. 5. Extend your Reach On your green journey be open to discover new, niche products that meet your expectations of a greener lifestyle and extend your care into the rest of your home with the Earthsap cleaning range; a safe and toxin-free alternative to conventional cleaners. Earthsap has been a manufacturer of earth-friendly toiletries and cleaning products for more than 20 years, with no dyes, chlorine bleach or harmful chemicals and no fumes or residues. They’re safe for your family, your pets and the environment, and because they’re biodegradable, they won’t cause any harm to aquatic life or marine plant growth.   #LiveGreenLifeHack Formulated with the help of skilled microbiologists, Earthsap products are made using pure plant oils and other natural ingredients to help you reduce your carbon footprint and contribute to the local economy while saving the environment from pollution. Find their range of products at health shops, Wellness Warehouse, select Spar supermarkets and www.faithful-to-nature.co.za because every contribution to a greener and healthier lifestyle will help you and our precious planet.

HELPING YOUR CHILD WITH TEST ANXIETY

As learners across the country prepare for and write their last Grade assessments of the year, there are a lot of parents who are dealing with children overwhelmed with high levels of anxiety.  Test anxiety is a real thing, and because the traditional South African assessment approach is to have learners write lots of tests, this can cause sustained negative impacts on some children during their school years. According to Naledi Mokoena, an educational psychologist in private practise and educator at SACAP (South African College of Applied Psychology) parents need to be on alert for signs that their child is experiencing test anxiety and take action to help remedy the situation.  She says, “Test anxiety is experienced as a significant physiological stress response when a child is faced with an upcoming assessment. This response is experienced internally. It is first important to differentiate between stress and anxiety. Stress is an expected human response that a child will experience around academic activities that are more demanding than other standard school activities. Anxiety, however, is a heightened response to a stressful event that can impact on concentration, retention and recall.  Therefore, a child experiencing heightened test anxiety is likely to under-perform in an assessment, which means it is not a meaningful measure of their actual knowledge and understanding.” It’s this potential lack of effectiveness when it comes to assessments that concerns many educators and school leaders.  Koa Academy Principal and Co-Founder, Mark Anderson says, “Assessments are supposed to be tools for learning.  We test knowledge and understanding so that kids are empowered to reflect on their learning and identify areas where they need to focus so that that they are continuously enhancing knowledge and understanding.  But if the test does not accurately assess their actual knowledge and understanding because they were overwhelmed by anxiety and unable to show what they can do, then the test was not just a meaningless event, it was also harmful to them.  Poor test results damage a child’s self-confidence and leads them to believe that they just can’t ‘do’ a certain subject or a segment of content.  So, at Koa, we think differently about how we do assessments so that they are tools that kids can use confidently to reflect on and advance their learning.” Finding the balance between stress and anxiety Mokoena and Anderson agree that the aim is not to eliminate all stress from a child’s experience.  Mokoena points out that stress in anticipation of writing tests is normal, and that it alerts the child to a notable change in their school life and should prompt and motivate them to focus on meeting the upcoming challenges.   Anderson says, “I always say to our Koa parents that I don’t mind if their kids are under a healthy amount of pressure. This is manageable stress that helps them grow and develop.  Facing a challenge is stimulating and inspiring – it helps to develop grit, perseverance and leads to self-mastery.  However, there’s a tipping of the scales when this healthy pressure becomes sustained anxiety that impedes a child’s learning, impacts negatively on their well-being and sets them up to deliver sub-par performances.” Mokoena advises parents to be on the lookout for signs that their child is not coping with the rigours of end-of-year exams.  She says, “There are both physical and behavioural indications of test anxiety, and parents need to pay attention to these because often a child may not be able to find the words to communicate their experienced anxiety.” During study and exam time, parents may notice: Changes in mood and demeanour – for example, a child who develops a shorter temper or less tolerance in dealing with people during exam time Changes in eating and sleeping patterns Loss of interest in enjoyable activities Restlessness, fidgeting, or difficulty in remaining still particularly during study time Distraction and avoidance of study time Physical changes – such as elevated levels of perspiration; different breathing patterns, palpitations and tightness in the chest; frequent headaches or stomach aches There are various strategies that parents can use to help their child manage test anxiety: Acknowledge your child’s feelings, and do not blame them for feeling overwhelmed.  There is nothing ‘wrong’ with your child.  Test anxiety, which is a form of performance anxiety, is common human experience for both children and adults.  Be compassionate and understanding so that your child is in no doubt that they have your full support Teach your child deep breathing and help them practice this relaxation technique regularly so that it can become a habitual response to feeling overwhelmed Help your child organise their study time with a schedule and a daily timetable that they are in charge of.  Taking control and tackling study tasks one at a time, can build confidence in their ability to cope Make sure your child’s study plan includes breaks that take into account their endurance when it comes to focus and concentration Make sure there is scheduled time for them to be physically active every day, as this helps to release endorphins which relieve mental stress Ensure that your child eats healthy foods and gets sufficient sleep If necessary, get advice or support from a professional such as an educational psychologist While these practices can help families cope with a child that has test anxiety in the short term, they don’t address the root cause of test anxiety, which lies in the profusion of testing in South African schools.  Anderson recommends that parents fully consider assessment strategy when making their school choices.  He says, “Parents should question a school’s approach to assessment and feel comfortable that their child’s school offers productive assessments.” Assessments for real-world application As an online school, Koa uses a variety of assessments that are embedded in the learning activities which are less focused on rote memorisation and are rather focused on mastery and application skills.  These types of assessments give learners, parents and teachers rich feedback about the learner’s knowledge and understanding of content.  Anderson says, “As

Brainline

SCORES OF DISTANCE EDUCATION GRADE 12 LEARNERS START FINAL EXAMS

Distance Education Provider, Brainline, says their pupils will once again participate in this year’s IEB examination, which is quality assured by Umalusi, the Council for Quality Assurance in General and Further Education.  ‘Brainline learners will write their exams at approved Brainline centres in three provinces: Gauteng, Kwa-Zulu Natal and the Western Cape, from the 19th of October. Our hearts and minds are with our matriculants and we wish them all the best,’ says Brainline CEO, Coleen Cronje. The IEB National Senior Certificate is an internationally benchmarked qualification and is equivalent to Cambridge AS level. Brainline’s matriculants come from not only South Africa, but many other parts of the world, where South African citizen resides as expats.  ‘This includes Botswana, Taiwan, Saudi Arabia, Namibia, United Arab Emirates, Brazil, Philippines, Malaysia, Spain, New Zealand, Germany, India and more,’ Cronje explains. As with the final exams written by learners within the public school system, IEB-learners will also write exams in the following subjects;  Afrikaans Home Language, English First Additional Language, English Home Language, Afrikaans First Additional Language Accounting, Agricultural Sciences, Business Studies, Computer Applications Technology, Consumer Studies, Dramatic Arts, Economics, Engineering Graphics & Design, Equine Studies, Geography, History, Life Orientation, Life Sciences , Mathematics, Mathematical Literacy, Music, Physical Sciences, Tourism and Visual Arts.  Cronje says their students have received optimal support to prepare them for this important exam. ‘In the world of the digital school, learners can feel lost without guidance and a tutor.  With our online live classes, which are saved for future reference, we address that need for the distance learner.  Gone are the days of the old model learner management systems with boring downloads and links.  This is the new era of a school at home, with all the support that one can expect in a traditional school, but on your own terms.’ Cronje says accommodations for special needs learners offer support to those who require additional assistance due to barriers to learning. ‘We assist learners and their families with the application, communicating with the IEB on their behalf, and providing the necessary facilities during the Grade 12 final examination.  According to the accommodation granted to them, it may range from separate venues to readers and scribes or as technology assists us, the use of a digital C-pen for audible translation of the written word.’ Brainline has provided structured home education on a distance education model to thousands of learners since 1990. Home education in South Africa has experienced significant growth over the last few years. At the end of 2018 there were an estimated 100,000 home education learners in the country . ‘Several factors have driven the growth of home education as an alternative option, ranging from increasingly sophisticated distance e-learning technology to an ever-growing network of tutors. Because it’s based on individual needs, home education can provide a safe space for children who may have found the traditional schooling environment challenging,’ says Cronje. The IEB class of 2021received a 98.39% pass rate, up from 98.07% in 2020. Brainline learners achieved 178 A’s, 310 B’s and 385 C’s.

Bonitas – innovation, life stages and quality care

Choosing a medical aid

It’s the time of year when medical schemes announce revised contributions, benefits and enhancements for the year ahead. With all the options it can be a little confusing, which is why you need to be smart by doing due diligence to ensure you choose a medical aid that provides the cover you need and is affordable.  It’s also important to look at how you can manage your medical expenses to make your healthcare benefits last. ‘There are 17 open medical schemes in South Africa, each with their own set of plans and benefits,’ explains Lee Callakoppen, Principal Officer of Bonitas Medical Fund. ‘It can be a little overwhelming trying to decide what is best which is why we advise consulting a medical aid broker or financial advisor.’ Brokers are accredited by the Council of Medical Schemes (CMS) and are qualified to offer advice and support at no extra charge. Together you can work your way through the different options, ahead of choosing a medical aid plan. Brokers also know the financial stability of the schemes, which should be a consideration in the final decision. A starting point, with or without a broker, is to compare what is available. Most medical schemes offer a range of healthcare options – from traditional medical aids through to hospital, savings, network or income-based plans that can make private healthcare more affordable.  So, what should you consider?  Affordability is key Take a careful look at your monthly budget to determine what you can afford.  The rule of thumb is that contributions should not exceed 10% of your monthly income.  However you also need to take a look what the plan you’re considering offers and whether there are additional costs, such as co-payments. A medical aid co-payment is a fee that the member is liable for when making use of certain medical services. These co-payments usually apply to specialist or elective medical procedures and differ from one medical aid scheme to another.  Your health status Assess your current health status and that of your family so that you can determine what cover you need.  Specifically, consider pre-existing conditions or ailments, together with any chronic medication or treatment that you or your family make use of as well as how often you visit a doctor or specialist and what you spend on dentistry or optometry.  Then reflect on what expenses over the past year were once-off (like childbirth) and which are likely to come up time and again – such as flu. This will help you decide on whether you need a comprehensive medical aid or a hospital plan. The fine print It’s important to take the time to read all the information.  Benefits vary from plan to plan, so you need to establish what is and isn’t covered.  Check what supplementary benefits are available that can potentially save significant day-to-day expenses. These could include preventative care benefits, ranging from basic screenings for blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar and Body Mass Index (BMI) measurements through to mammograms, pap smears and prostate testing. In some cases, these extend to maternity programs, dental check-ups, flu vaccinations and more.  Once you understand what is on offer, you can make an informed comparison and decision. Managed Care  Managed Care programmes help members manage severe chronic conditions such as cancer, diabetes and HIV/AIDS. Ask whether the scheme you are considering has a managed care programme. Medical savings  A medical scheme allocates an annual fixed amount for medical savings – you need to know what this allocation is and whether you feel it will be adequate for your needs. Daily detail Look at what the scheme suggests will help make your benefits last, bearing in mind the following: Are you required to use a specific GP, hospital network or Designated Service Providers (DSPs)? Although this helps keep costs down, you need to check the network in your area before making a final decision Having to be referred to a specialist by your GP? Does your medical plan offer additional GP consultations, which they will pay for, after you have exhausted your day-to-day benefits?  Technology Technology and virtual care are being embraced by medical schemes, even more so since the Covid-19 pandemic. Check what is offered on the plan you’re considering and also whether you’re able to access your benefits, submit claims, find healthcare providers, WA chat and access your medical information online 24/7. Age will impact your decision If you have young children, ensure that the medical aid option you select provides sufficient child illness benefits. For young couples looking to start a family: Does the option provide sufficient maternity benefits? However, if you are slightly older, ensure you select an option that covers chronic conditions and provides sufficient in-hospital cover in the event of hospitalisation.  Waiting period and exclusions The Medical Schemes Act and the specific scheme’s rules determine this. Callakoppen recommends that you enquire with the relevant scheme about their exclusion list and waiting periods.  Financial stability of the scheme With two medical schemes recently being placed under curatorship, it’s important to choose a medical scheme with a solid track record and reputation. Check the claims payment record … do they pay on time? Equally important is the demographics and size of the scheme. Has the membership of the scheme grown over the past few years and what is the general age?  And finally, take a look at the annual contribution increase, in fact a good idea is to look at the increases over the past three to five years to see how these compare with the rest of the industry. ‘Health is the new wealth,’ says Callakoppen. ‘Your health is important, as are your finances, don’t take either for granted.  When it comes to healthcare cover, invest time to research and understand what you need. If in doubt, phone the call centre, your broker or financial advisor to ensure you find the right medical scheme to walk the healthcare path with you.’

Expert Tips to Help Your Kids Prepare their Xmas Wish List

Holiday wish lists are far from a new concept, for most kids the biggest toy trends hit the top of their lists but the pressure every parent feels surrounding the festive season is sometimes overwhelming. As a parent we often struggle with giving our kids too much or not enough, you often wonder where the balance should be, coupled with the feelings that they are too spoiled or not spoiled enough. Frequent questions we ask ourselves include what should we spend? Are we making them materialistic? Or just simply showing love? That’s where a wish list comes in, it helps parents and kids keep the right attitudes and perspective during the biggest giving and receiving time on earth. Kids love making Christmas wish lists, here are some tips from the experts at Toys R Us on how to make, organise and share your kids wish lists with friends and family. This will ensure you get them something they really want and at the same time give them some guidelines and provide a good learning opportunity. Setting guidelines: Children need guidance from their parents to manage expectations and provide a good learning opportunity when creating their wish lists. If you are particularly worried about a wish list promoting greed, an important thing to highlight is that ‘Just because you list it doesn’t mean you’re going to get it.’ Be sure to let them know that if they get it, great, but if they don’t that’s cool too, create a savings plan to buy it themselves later. Why not set-up a toy registry and piggy bank on the Toys R Us website. In three simple steps you can set it up, share and create a registry. Starting early: Don’t wait until December to get your kids to do their wish lists. Every year Toys R Us releases their top toy list with an expertly curated selection of toys for all kids, this year is no exception. Children can pick up Geoffrey’s ‘Big Book of Toys’ in-store or online making selecting toys for their wish list much easier. There’s also an opportunity to win their wish list. A parent’s veto: Mom or dad have the last say, sometimes you just have to say NO. Explain to your kids why they need to accept it and move on and help them select a different gift. Give them some alternative options, brainstorm with them and discuss pros and cons. Needs vs. Wants: This is an especially valuable conversation to have, and the festive season provides a great opportunity to demonstrate this. Explain to your child the difference between a need and a want and show them options of gifts that demonstrate both.  Why not have them write down something they need, want, can read, can wear, and can give! Putting the list together: This should be the fun part. Get some coloured paper, decorations, crayons, pens etc and get creative.  If you want a way for your kids to create a digital wish list and share it with family, visit this link to create a registry: https://www.toysrus.co.za/registry what’s more you can add money throughout the year to their piggy bank so they can save for toys they really want. Giving back: It should be instilled in your children that the season isn’t all about receiving, it’s also about giving as well. Find a worthy cause to get your children involved, why not get them to donate some old toys of theirs before they get their new gifts? You can also donate R5 with every purchase to Toys R Us so you can support the Reach for a Dream Foundation in making other kids wishes come true. Take advantage of this great learning opportunity this holiday and help raise conscientious gift givers and receivers.  It’s just one more way you and your kids can add more joy into the holidays.  For more information visit the website or follow Toys R Us on Instagram and Facebook #ToysRUsTopToys2022 #BigBookOfToys
