Body acne 101: Everything you need to know about prevention and treatment

We know that acne is becoming more and more prevalent among men and women of all ages, and that adult acne is on the rise, but unfortunately it is not just our faces that are affected by breakouts. ‘Bacne’, the term often used to describe acne on the body (and specifically the back), may be less common than facial acne, but it affects thousands of teenagers, men and women, regardless of their age. Body acne typically appears on the upper back, chest or buttocks, and like facial acne, it may be caused by a variety of different factors. In some instances, the same factors that trigger facial acne may lead to body, but this isn’t always the case. The most common causes of body acne are: Sweat Body acne is common among people who regularly exercise, particularly those who sweat a lot during workouts. Sweat may aggravate breakouts and if the skin is not cleansed shortly after exercise, more breakouts may develop. Friction Sources of friction may lead to a type of body acne known as ‘acne mechanica’. When you rub something against the skin, or put pressure on the skin, and this friction is combined with heat or sweat, the follicles may become irritated and inflamed, leading to breakouts. You can develop acne mechanica from tight clothing, sports equipment or even something as simple as carrying a backpack while hiking. Hair care products Did you know that most shampoos and conditioners contain oils and silicones that may clog pores and cause irritation? When you rinse the shampoo and conditioner from your hair, these products run onto your back in the shower, and may lead to clogged pores and breakouts. This is known as ‘acne cosmetica’. Hormones Hormonal irregularities and fluctuations is linked to the overproduction of sebum, which may clog pores on the face and body, leading to acne. This is particularly common during puberty and women may also experience this during menopause, as well as during certain times of their monthly menstrual cycle. How to prevent and treat body acne Shower after exercise Take a shower as soon as you can after exercise to avoid sweat sitting on the skin for a prolonged length of time. Wash skin gently (don’t rub vigorously or tug at the skin), and if you are prone to getting body acne, use a cleanser containing salicylic acid on the affected areas. Lamelle Clarity Active Cleanse (R290.00) utilises salicylic acid and tea tree oil to gently cleanse and exfoliate skin while soothing and calming redness. Wash your hair before washing your body When showering, always wash and condition your hair first, before you wash your body. This will allow you to wash off any haircare product that may be sitting on your back or chest, and prevent the formation of acne cosmetic. Wash clothing regularly Sweat, bacteria and dead skin cells may remain on clothing and other fabrics (such as bedding) if they are not washed thoroughly and regularly. Be sure to wash your workout clothing after each session, change bedding regularly and don’t wear a shirt more than once before washing. Add a supplement to your daily regime Certain minerals and nutrients are known to help fight acne, and taking a quality supplement designed for clearer skin is a must if you struggle with body acne. Lamelle Acnevelle Plus (R345.00) contains zinc, copper glycinate and nicotinamide, a combination that has been shown to improve inflammatory acne and reduce redness and sensitivity. When used in combination with Lamelle’s Clarity skincare range, Acnevelle Plus has been shown to achieve an improvement in 88% of patients with mild to moderate inflammatory problematic skin within eight weeks of use. Treat existing spots with the right products Body acne can have a major impact on one’s confidence, so it’s important to treat it using high quality products that deliver on their promises. An ideal product for the treatment of non-facial acne is Lamelle’s Clarity Body Spray (R495.00) which contains a host of spot-fighting ingredients like salicylic acid, niacinamide and beta hydroxy acid to help unclog congested pores, exfoliate the skin and soothe inflammation. The convenient spray format allows you to easily spray it onto the back and chest. Allow the product to dry before getting dressed. Treating an existing spot with a topical product will help it to heal faster and minimise the risks of further infection and scarring. Try Lamelle Clarity Active Control (R155.00), a spot gel that assists in speeding up the healing and recovery process of inflammatory lesions. Like the Clarity Body Spray, it also contains salicylic acid, niacinamide and beta hydroxy acid, along with potassium azeloyl diglycinate, an ingredient derived from acne-busting azelaic acid. Apply directly to spots twice a day. With a few small lifestyle changes and the right products, body acne can be managed and minimised. Tik Tok’s viral rice water toner is breaking the internet, but does it really work?

The Tik Tok beauty community is known for sharing plenty of skincare tips and hacks – some incredibly useful, others a little wacky. The latest DIY skincare trend to emerge on this social media platform – and go viral – is rice water toner. Influencers are swearing by it, and the hashtag #ricewater has surpassed 800 million views on Tik Tok, so it comes as no surprise that women all over the world are trying it themselves. To make rice water is super simple: Steep white rice in cold water for about half an hour, then drain the water from the rice. Some women like to cool it in the fridge, while others use it at room temperature. Dip a cotton pad in the liquid and gently sweep it across your skin, allowing it to dry before applying your serum or moisturiser. According to Tik Tok, this cloudy water makes the perfect toner, helping to increase the skin’s radiance, reduce redness, soothe irritated skin and neutralize free radicals (thanks to its antioxidant content). Rich in protein, amino acids, starch and vitamins B and E, rice water may be a new trend on social media, but its use in beauty is not. It’s been documented that women in Ancient China and Japan used rice water to cleanse their skin and hair, as it was believed to give the skin a glow and increase the hair’s shine. While there is something to be said for the history and tradition that goes along with the use of rice water, it’s important to investigate any skincare trend that emerges on social media before trying it yourself. Lamelle Research Laboratories is a leader in the skincare industry, and is always at the forefront of innovation and new, cutting-edge skincare technologies. Karen Bester, Medical Trainer at Lamelle, gives her professional opinion on the rice water toner trend: “In terms of the pH of rice water, I think the fermentation probably changes the pH of the water so that it might be more compatible with skin. The carbohydrates present in rice water might actually help the skin to trap water. We know that Ferulic acid is derived from certain forms of rice and this is a great exfoliator and antioxidant. Fermentation increases the probiotics in the solution and they might have some effect on the skin’s biome. I am not sure that rice and human probiotics are the same but it being human food, it probably does help. I do not believe it will reverse severe sun damaged skin or manage acute inflammatory acne, but I do think it could benefit skin that is generally healthy and just needs a boost. It is also cost effective.” So while it may not cure acne or fix any or all skincare concerns, it does have its benefits. For a professional treatment that offers visible results and improved skin health using ingredients derived from rice, look no further than Lamelle’s Rice Bran Peel. This professional treatment is renowned for its anti-ageing benefits, as well as for its ability to help reduce and manage pigmentation. The main ingredient in the Lamelle Rice Bran AO (antioxidant) Peel System is Japanese rice bran extract which offers a rich source of Ferulic acid. This polyphenol is incorporated into the peel with Ascorbic Acid, Citric Acid, Lactic Acid Retinol and Panthenol. Rice Bran AO peel system is an effective in-office treatment for clients seeking age prevention options. This combination of ingredients offers an effective resurfacing treatment with the added advantage that it has no sun-sensitizing risk (sensitivity to the sun is a real risk for the first week post peel with alpha hydroxy acids peels). What can you expect from this treatment? After preparation of the skin, four layers of peel solutions are applied to the skin over each other – two layers of each of the two Rice Bran AO peel solutions. You may experience a slight feeling of tightening of the skin during the procedure, and only the slightest tingle is experienced in very dry skin, making the treatment very comfortable. The skin is left with a light yellow mask, which is to be removed at home, 6-8 hours post-treatment, using a Lamelle cleanser, and followed with the Restorative Balm. This twice-daily routine, including the use of sunscreen during the day, is continued until the skin has fully recovered (after about a week). Expected post-treatment recovery: Day 1-2: Skin can feel heat sensitive and slightly sensitised; Day 3-5: Sensitivity with light flaking – some products can cause the skin to tingle and flush; Day 6-7: Slight sensitivity – go back to usual cleanser and moisturiser; Day 8: Returns to home care product routine. Skin benefits: Increased desquamation (shedding); Increased antioxidant protection; Improved skin texture, brightness and removal of irregular pigmentation; Increased product penetration. If you’re looking for an anti-ageing solution, or want to improve pigmentation or your skin’s texture, find out from your skincare professional if the Lamelle Rice Bran AO Peel System is suitable for you. Lamelle Helase: How ASE sunscreen protection technology makes all the difference

When it comes to skincare innovations, Lamelle Research Laboratories has always been a pioneer, but our cutting-edge Helase range has revolutionised sun protection as we know it. While many things give it the edge over any other sunscreen, its ASE technology allows it to offer so much more than just protection against the full spectrum of sunlight. Ready to unpack the Lamelle difference? Photolyase – not your auntie’s algae ASE technology is essentially Helase’s inclusion of two key enzymes, including photolyase, a naturally occurring protein with the ability to repair the DNA damage caused by UV radiation. Derived from a particular algae, it doesn’t just protect your skin from the havoc caused by unprotected sun exposure, it actively repairs the damage. Sunlight, as great as it feels on your skin, is not your friend. The UV-B aspect not only suppresses your immune system but also mutates your skin cell’s DNA, ultimately leading to the formation of potentially lethal tumours. While all living organisms have repair mechanisms that can identify damaged bits of DNA as well as snip them out and replace them, some organisms – hello algae – are much, much better at it thanks to photolyase. This extraordinary enzyme has the ability to seek out any dimers (abnormal kinks in DNA) and swiftly correct them.  A very different defence ASE technology aside, both Helase 50+ and Helase Urban Defence 30 (which has the added benefit of reducing the negative effects of air pollution) are action-packed with antioxidants and can defend differently with two more weapons – TRPV1 inhibition and AHR inhibition. TRPV1, despite sounding like a radio channel, is a receptor that regulates your skin’s temperature. It’s activated by sun exposure and, once triggered, has a negative effect on your skin’s collagen production while ramping up inflammation – the fast track to premature ageing and pigmentation. As far as AHR goes, these are aryl hydrocarbon receptors – a “gene switch” in your cells – that can lower your skin’s immune system, increasing your risk of developing skin cancer. This is why our AHR inhibiting technology isn’t just a next-level sun protection “nice to have”, but a potentially life-saving must. Make the switch Ultimately, Lamelle’s Helase line hails an exciting new era in sun protection. It doesn’t just defend against sun damage but actively repairs damaged DNA. What other brand can offer you that? Maybe it’s time you made the switch and see how Lamelle does it differently for yourself.

Lamelle skincare expert answers the most common questions about acne

Gone are the days when breakouts magically disappear the moment you leave your teens, never to be seen again. Adult acne is becoming more and more common, and it’s not unusual for people to continue experiencing breakouts well into their 30s, 40s and even 50s. The reason? There are many. From hormones, to lifestyle, to hygiene and stress, each person’s acne journey is unique. Whether you experience the odd breakout or you’re battling full-on acne, pimples have a way of knocking one’s self-esteem and putting a damper on day-to-day life. The best way to overcome breakouts begins with education. The more you know, the better you’ll be equipped to deal with them – no matter how stubborn they may seem. Karen Bester, Medical Trainer at Lamelle Research Laboratories, answers the most common questions about acne and breakouts: I’m no longer a teenager but I’m suddenly experiencing breakouts again. Why is this happening to me as an adult?  We all assume that the only time you should get breakouts is when you are in your teens. Even though this is the one time that your body is going through a massive amount of hormonal change, this is not the only time that it happens. Breakouts indicate a change in hormones and we have a few phases in our life when this happens. What is the difference between breakouts and acne? The odd pimple can be caused by changing environments, stress, an area of clogged pores or maybe after a peel or resurfacing treatments that creates change in your skin. There would be no irregularity about a breakout. Acne is a chronic condition that is driven by hormones and probably has a link to your genetics. It will worsen with stress and hormonal change. It can also vary from very light to full inflammatory cystic acne. Can my diet lead to breakouts? That is an interesting question. There is no unequivocal evidence that proves that diet is linked to acne or the worsening of breakouts. If there were a strong link then there would be populations that don’t have acne where these foods might be excluded from their diets. No population is excluded from acne and breakouts. There are individual anecdotal links to diet though and these cannot be denied. One of the drivers of male hormone in PCOS is insulin resistance. So in the PCOS patient sugary diets and a diet high in carbohydrates might worsen their acne anecdotally. Can wearing makeup cause breakouts? Wearing makeup does not cause breakouts. Rather, not removing makeup and sleeping with thick layers of makeup on your skin might cause breakouts. Once again this will vary from person to person. Makeup does not cause acne though. Hormone fluctuations and genetic pre-disposition do. What type of skincare ingredients and products should I be using to clear blemishes and prevent new ones from forming? For the odd pimple we love salicylic acid, azelaic acid and niacinamide. These could be included in a cleanser or spot treatment or moisturiser. Add a Retinoic acid ester to that if you have acne, generally used at night in a moisturising cream or additional serum used with moisturisers. What should (and shouldn’t) I do when I notice a new pimple appearing? Keep calm. Don’t fiddle. At Lamelle we use our Clarity Active Control spot treatment that contains ingredients that calm inflammation, kill bacteria in the pore and remove any blockage of the pore. Is it normal to develop acne after menopause? Perimenopause and menopause is one of the times when females have enormous fluctuations in hormones as their ovaries stop their hormone production. This means that there is a lot more male hormone action in their bodies – these would previously be controlled by the female hormones. So it is very normal for women to have oilier skin, get more breakouts and even start losing their hair – all driven by testosterone. How can I maintain an anti-aging routine while managing breakouts? When you are using Retinoic acid, as in our Clarity PM Plus and RA Correctives, you are managing the breakouts but also adding a powerful age prevention ingredient to your skin. Retinoic acid increases skin turnover and shedding in the top layers of your skin. This keeps that layer younger and healthy. Retinoic acid also removes elastosis and when you use it for more than 10 months it will show significant collagen production. Additionally, Niacinamide is also anti-inflammatory and anti-ageing. It helps our skin make good lipid bi-layer that is key in age prevention and correction. Nobiletin is another interesting ingredient. In Dermaheal we use it because it stops the genetic triggers that cause chronic inflammation that is a key to our skin getting old. In Clarity we use it because it is able to decrease the size of enlarged sebaceous glands in acne and it also makes sebum less sticky. So when you have acne and you are using Clarity and Acnevelle Plus, you do not need to worry about ageing as Lamelle is already helping you with that. Are there any lifestyle habits that can lessen my breakouts? There is definitely a lot to be said for keeping skin clean and healthy. This is done by cleansing and moisturising the skin twice a day with the correct products for your skin. If you do notice a lifestyle habit that is affecting your skin health, try to avoid it. Don’t pick at your skin or pimples and avoid touching your skin too much as our hands do tend to be dirtier. If you tend to get breakouts around your hairline, wash your hair regularly. The scalp tends to be oilier at the hair follicles. For more information, visit www.lamelle.co.za

However, if you have a more pigmented skin type or simply prefer more coverage, you can easily wear it over your favourite foundation. Not your average sun protector Unlike other sunscreens that only shield you from UVA and UVB rays, Helase Photo-Repair Tint 50 defends against the full spectrum of light. This includes UVC light that negatively affects your immune system; visible light that contributes to photo-ageing and DNA damage as well as Infrared A, B and C. The latter is the type of light that causes you to feel warm but also triggers premature ageing and pigmentation-encouraging inflammation. Helase Photo-Repair Tint 50’s superstar actives include Pycnogenol, a potent antioxidant derived from French Maritime bark, to fend off cell-damaging free radicals and calm inflammation. It also contains TRPV1 and AHR inhibitors to negate the effects of immune suppression caused by exposure to early UVB, Infrared and UVC frequencies. Lastly, Helase Photo-Repair Tint 50 doesn’t just protect – it also corrects thanks to a powerful DNA-repairing enzyme, photolyase. It has the unique ability to seek out and repair dangerous dimers (essentially “kinks” and breaks in your DNA) that if left unchecked could lead to the mutations that cause skin cancer. If you’re looking for next-generation sun protection served up with a skin-tone flattering tint, you’re going to want Helase Photo-Repair Tint 50 in your make-up bag this summer.  To learn more about Helase Photo-Repair Tint 50, visit Lamelle.co.za

Five skincare resolutions we should all make and keep in 2024

New Year’s resolutions have a reputation for getting broken. In fact, it’s been reported that most people abandon their resolutions as soon as two months into a new year. While we have the best intentions when setting them, we sometimes fall into the trap of aspiring to unrealistic standards. Not only does this make our resolutions difficult to achieve, but it also makes them feel like hard work (which most of us don’t have the energy or time for). This year, instead of aspiring to unrealistic beauty goals that may leave us abandoning ship, we’re committing to small, attainable goals that are easy to achieve, and make a great impact on the health and beauty of our skin in the long run. Lamelle Research Laboratories has identified five realistic skincare resolutions you can make (and keep!) this year: 1# Remove your makeup before going to bed Have you ever come home late, wanting nothing more than to skip your evening routine and simply collapse onto your bed? Going to bed with makeup on is terrible for your skin and should be avoided at all costs. It clogs pores, may lead to breakouts and leaves skin looking lacklustre. Stick to your evening skincare routine every day, and always remove your makeup before going to bed – no matter how tired you are. 2# Apply SPF every single day Did you know that your skin is vulnerable to sun-induced DNA damage all year round? This means that you need to apply a broad-spectrum sun protection product every single day, even on overcast and rainy days. Choose an SPF with a superior formulation and additional anti-ageing benefits like Lamelle Helase 50. It protects against the full spectrum of sunlight while the super-antioxidant Pycnogenol® destroys harmful free radicals to decrease the number of harmful enzymes that cause thinning and sagging of the skin. 3# Stay hydrated There are endless benefits to drinking water throughout the day. From better digestion to maintaining healthy blood pressure, water nourishes our bodies and helps them to function optimally. It is also essential for hydrated skin. The more water you drink, the more hydrated and plumper your skin will be, plus, as water helps flush out toxins, you’ll also enjoy a clearer complexion with fewer breakouts. You can give your skin even more hydration by incorporating hyaluronic acid into your skincare regime. This ingredient is known to hold 1000 times its own weight in water, and is considered the very best option for dehydrated skin. Try Lamelle Correctives HA+ Serum, which contains five types of hyaluronic acid for maximum skin hydration benefits. 4# Focus on antioxidants To combat the effects of harmful free radicals on the skin and body, it’s important to ensure your diet and skincare regime is rich in high performance antioxidants. When it comes to food, be sure to eat plenty of brightly coloured fruits and vegetables such as strawberries, oranges, bell peppers and tomatoes. The more intense the colour, the higher the antioxidant presence. When it comes to skincare, vitamin C is your best friend. A powerful antioxidant with the ability to prevent and correct hyperpigmentation, increase the skin’s radiance and slow down the signs of ageing, vitamin C is a skincare must-have. Try Lamelle Correctives Vita C Lipid Serum. It features lipid-soluble vitamin C with jojoba and ginger root for a comfortable home treatment that delivers the skin benefits of vitamin C. 5# Stop touching your face Harmful bacteria can be found all around us – from our cellphones to our car keys to our door handles. Most importantly, it’s also on our hands. Even if you’re diligent about washing your hands regularly, there will still be plenty of germs on your fingers throughout the day, and every time you touch your face, you’re transferring this bacteria onto your skin. The same goes for dirty cellphones and pillow cases – the bacteria they transfer to the skin is a leading cause of breakouts. Try to avoid touching your skin as much as possible and don’t pick at blemishes, as this may lead to infection. Clean your cellphone and wash your pillow case regularly – your skin will thank you for it! If a breakout does pop up don’t fiddle with it, and instead apply Lamelle Clarity Active Control, an effective anti-inflammatory gel spot treatment designed to calm the inflammatory processes so that the area can heal as quickly as possible. Whether you’re a dedicated skincare fanatic or a beauty newbie, these simple resolutions are easy to follow and easy to maintain, and will leave you with healthier, more beautiful looking skin. How to care for your skin as we transition from summer to autumn

As we start nearing the end of summer, the days are a little shorter and the evenings a little more chilly – autumn is almost here! Each of the four seasons pose unique skincare challenges, and sometimes it feels like the new season begins just as you master the current season’s challenges. The “in between” seasons – autumn and spring – can sometimes be the most testing when it comes to skincare. That’s because the change from warm to cold, and cold to warm, often comes on suddenly, leaving you with a regime that’s no longer suitable and skin that’s no longer comfortable. Our skin is a creature of habit – it loves consistency. When its environment changes, it has to work harder to maintain moisture and adjust to new demands. In the process, the barrier function may become disrupted, you may be prone to inflammation, dryness and discomfort. Colder weather is synonymous with drier skin. That’s because there’s a major dip in humidity (the moisture content in the air) during autumn and winter. When there is less moisture in the air, there is less moisture in your skin. Plus, when the air is dry, it draws moisture from anywhere it can – including your hair and skin! This may leave skin feeling dry, irritable and even flaky. Caring for your skin during the change of season typically requires a few extra steps and a few extra products, but with the right regime and simple lifestyle changes you can enjoy moisturised, healthy and glowing skin all season long. Here’s how to ensure your skin stays soft, supple and moisturised as we head into autumn. Exfoliate regularly Our skin is prone to dryness in autumn and a build-up of dead skin cells on the surface of the skin can leave it looking dull and lackluster, not to mention increase the likelihood of developing ingrown hair. During autumn, you may need to exfoliate more regularly to ensure dry and dead skin cells are removed from the surface of the skin. Depending on your skin, you may need to do this twice a week to every second day. Bramley Shea Butter Exfoliating Scrub can be used all over the body (including the face) to gently remove dead cells from the skin’s top layer. Shea Butter is known for its ability to protect and regenerate the skin. It contains high concentrations of fatty acids and vitamins, making it an ideal ingredient for softening skin, plus, it has anti-inflammatory and healing properties. Use a couple of times per week for softer, smoother and clearer skin. Take care of sensitivity It’s not unusual for skin to become sensitive when the season changes. Dry skin with an impaired barrier may cause itching and discomfort. When skin is sensitive, it’s important to care for it using products specially designed for sensitive skin, to ensure it isn’t exposed to harsh ingredients that may exacerbate sensitivity. Bramley Magnolia Tissue Oil Sensitive Skin Gel is specially formulated for sensitive skin and contains argan oil, olive oil, jojoba oil and vitamin E oil to intensely moisturize and nourish skin. This non-greasy formula is easily absorbed and helps treat dehydration, improve skin tone and minimise the appearance of scars and stretch marks. It can be used on the face and body and is suitable for dry, dehydrated and sensitive skin. Increase your skin’s hydration When temperatures drop, so does humidity, meaning there is less moisture in the air. This is why our skin tends to get drier, and sometimes even flaky, during autumn and winter. Replenish lost moisture by applying moisturizing products rich in hydrating ingredients such as vitamin E and essential fatty acids, to your daily regime. We recommend applying your favourite moisturizing product daily, especially after a bath or shower when skin is still damp. For the ultimate moisture boost, use one of Bramley’s renowned tissue oils. Did you know they’re SA’s number one selling tissue oil? That’s because they contain highly effective ingredients, are versatile and don’t break the bank. All Bramley Tissue Oils are enriched with Bio-Pharm oil (exclusive to Bramley!) and vitamin E, and are suitable for everyday use. Designed to improve skin health and texture, they’re effective in combatting dryness, stretch marks, scars and uneven tone. Plus, they’re really easy to incorporate into your regime! They’re non-greasy, so you can massage the oil directly onto your skin. You can even add a few drops to your bath water or mix a few drops into your body butter for added nourishment. Choose from a variety of fragrances (we recommend the classic Magnolia). Taking a little bit of extra time to care for your skin during the transition from summer to autumn will ensure it stays soft, moisturized and healthy, plus it’ll strengthen its barrier to ensure moisture goes in (and stays in) once winter sets in. Bramley products are available at PEP Stores nationwide. Bramley Tissue oils, Body Butters and Wipes are available at select Clicks, Pick ‘n Pay and Wholesale stores.   Learn more at: https://bramleycosmetics.com/ Follow Bramley on social media: Facebook: Bramley Cosmetics and Toiletries (https://www.facebook.com/bramleycosmetics/) Instagram: @bramleycosmetics (https://www.instagram.com/bramleycosmetics/)

How to avoid a sunburn (and accelerated ageing!) this summer

For many of us, summer is synonymous with time spent outdoors, be it at the beach, next to the swimming pool, or exploring one of our country’s beautiful hiking trails. While spending time outdoors is great for your physical and mental health, it’s important to take precautions when it comes to your skin. Most of us recall a bad sunburn at some point or another, as extended periods of time spent outdoors often results in neglected sun care. Sun burns are painful and dangerous, and it’s known that getting sunburnt increases one’s risk of developing skin cancer. But that’s not all – the sun’s UV rays are also responsible for the formation of lines and wrinkles, accelerated ageing, hyperpigmentation and skin DNA damage. This doesn’t mean that you have to avoid the outdoors altogether, but it does mean that you need to enjoy it responsibly, taking care to protect your skin when you do so. Lamelle Research Laboratories has identified five important things to do this summer to avoid a sunburn (and subsequently, accelerated ageing): Try to avoid the sun during peak hours Between 10am and 2pm, the sun’s UV rays are at their strongest, so it’s best to limit your exposure during these hours. Try to schedule your walks and swims for the early morning or the afternoon. Cover up when you go outside Invest in a wide brimmed hat, sunglasses and a kaftan or wrap to wear when you get out of the water, and try to cover up as much of your skin whenever possible. Reapply your sun protection product regularly By now you know that it is essential to wear a good quality SPF product all year round, even during winter. That’s because the sun’s UVA rays (the ones responsible for accelerated ageing) have the ability to damage your skin even when it is overcast. During summer, once a day is not enough. If you are spending time outdoors you need to reapply your product after every swim (even if it says “water-resistant” on the packaging) or after every hour or two, depending on your skin type. Not only will this help avoid a painful burn, but it will also help prevent the formation of hyperpigmentation and signs of ageing. Don’t forget the hidden spots Most of us don’t take the time to apply SPF to all the smaller parts of our bodies, such as our ears, hairline or feet. Take care to apply your SPF all over – even on the areas you think won’t be exposed. After all, the ears are one of the most common places for skin cancer to form. Moisturise – even if your skin isn’t dry The sun has a dehydrating effect on the skin, and if you’re spending lots of time outside, you may notice your skin getting drier. Don’t wait for your skin to become extremely dry before you moisturise – hydrated skin is healthier, plumper, and looks younger. Apply moisturiser to your face twice a day (even on hot days) and at least once a day on your body to keep your skin healthy, happy and strong. How do you know which sun protection product to choose? There are a lot of different sun care products on the market – knowing what to look for in a product goes a long way in keeping your skin protected. One of the most important things to look out for, is a broad spectrum product, meaning it protects the skin from both UVA rays (the rays responsible for skin ageing) and UVB rays (the rays responsible for sun burn). Look for a sunscreen containing antioxidants, as this will help increase your skin’s resistance to the formation of hyperpigmentation and will also protect skin from the harmful free radicals responsible for accelerated skin ageing. Lamelle has two very powerful sun protection products available – each one unique in its capabilities. Try Helase 50+ or Helase Urban Defensethis summer to protect your skin from sun burn as well as from DNA damage, dark marks and accelerated signs of ageing caused by the sun. Lamelle Helase 50+ (R600.00) In short, this is the ultimate upgrade from your normal, everyday SPF 50. Helase 50+ protects against the full spectrum of sunlight while the super-antioxidant Pycnogenol® destroys harmful free radicals to decrease the number of harmful enzymes that cause thinning and sagging of the skin. On top of this, it decreases the damaging and ageing inflammation in the skin, while actively stopping the effects of aging on the skin and keeping the immunity of the skin intact when exposed to sunlight. Lamelle Helase Urban Defense (R585.00) Lamelle Helase Urban Defence 30 is a multi-functional broad spectrum photo-protector that helps reduce the impact of urban pollution. Potent antioxidants reduce ageing, inflammation and hyperpigmentation. Suitable for all skin types. Key ingredients include UVA and UVB filters that protect against radiation. They also protect against Visible Light which can cause pigmentation in darker skin types. Sun protection allows you to enjoy the best of summer without compromising the health of your skin. Be extra vigilant this season and enjoy healthier, happier skin.   Learn more at www.lamelle.co.za

Five reasons why you should include vitamin C in your summer skincare regime

Skincare enthusiasts know that vitamin C is one of the most important ingredients to include in one’s skincare regime. A powerful antioxidant, vitamin C offers a multitude of benefits. From its anti-ageing properties, to its ability to help fight the formation of hyperpigmentation and breakouts, it’s an all-rounder that no skincare regime should be without. Here are five reasons why vitamin C should be your go-to skincare ingredient this summer: It promotes collagen production Collagen is a protein naturally produced by our bodies, but over time it begins to deplete. When our collagen levels decrease, skin starts to sag and lines and wrinkles set in. Vitamin C is critical for skin to produce collagen through the process of collagen synthesis. More collagen means firmer, more elastic skin with an overall tighter effect. It helps increase the skin’s tolerance for the sun It’s impossible to avoid the sun completely during summer, but it is possible to protect your skin from the effects of the sun’s harmful UV rays. Using an effective vitamin C product alongside your broad spectrum SPF can increase your protection from sun damage. That’s because vitamin C’s antioxidant qualities prevent oxidative damage and neutralise the damage caused by free radicals. When using a vitamin C serum or cream with your sunscreen, you’ll enjoy optimum protection. It protects skin from hyperpigmentation The sun is the number one cause of hyperpigmentation (dark marks) and uneven skin tone. That’s why those of us who are prone to it, experience darkening of hyperpigmentation during summer. When our skin is exposed to the sun, it produces melanin, the substance responsible for pigment in the skin. When melanin is overproduced, it results in hyperpigmentation. Vitamin C helps inhibit the production of melanin by decreasing the activity of an enzyme called tyrosinase. Vitamin C helps to prevent the formation of hyperpigmentation, but it also has the ability to lighten existing hyperpigmentation. It increases radiance Many of us struggle with a dull or tired-looking complexion after winter. Vitamin C is known to brighten the skin, leaving it with that sought-after “lit from within” glow. It’s also a great ingredient for those of us who are feeling (and thus looking) a little tired after a long year, as its brightening effect is particularly effective in areas like around the eyes, where tiredness sets in first. It helps reduce acne and breakouts Acne and breakouts can strike any time of the year, but because skin gets oilier and sweatier during summer, it’s common during the warmer months. Vitamin C has anti-inflammatory properties that help reduce inflammation and speed up the process of healing breakouts. It is also effective at treating scars left behind by pimples (known as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation). Additionally, vitamin C can help reduce the formation of acne thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties that help control the skin’s natural sebum production. Lamelle Research Laboratories has a variety of highly effective vitamin C products available to suit all skin types and concerns: If your skin is prone to sensitivity and you struggle to tolerate vitamin C, try: Lamelle Correctives Vita C-Lipid Serum (R985.00) The gentle anti-age skin booster. Not all skins can tolerate pure Ascorbic acid (vitamin C) and many derivative forms aren’t as effective. That’s why Lamelle invested so much time and effort into creating an exciting lipid-soluble form of vitamin C that delivers ascorbic acid-comparable results but is gentle enough to be used on sensitive and dry skin. This serum contains 20% vitamin C, jojoba seed oil and ginger root extract. If your skin tolerates vitamin C well, try: Lamelle Correctives Recharge CE (R960.00) The original Lamelle L-Ascorbic-Acid product, Correctives Recharge CE has been updated with the inclusion of additional 1% tocopherol (vitamin E) and is a thinner suspension that delivers a more tolerable 20% concentration of L-Ascorbic-Acid. It’s intended as the entry-level product for skins that can tolerate Ascorbic Acid. It offers powerful antioxidant protection, reduced signs of ageing, a more even skin tone and increased radiance. If you require intensive results, try: Lamelle Correctives Vita C 30 (R1090.00) The highest-concentration non-prescription Ascorbic acid available. No one thought you could deliver pure ascorbic acid in this high concentration safely. Lamelle created Correctives Vita C 30 with 30% ascorbic acid – and it’s proven safe and effective. Use it for more intensive age correcting results or if you’re exposed to more free radical damage than normal (smokers, road runners or those who spend more time outdoors). If you’re looking to improve the overall condition of your skin while protecting it against UV damage, hyperpigmentation, breakouts and dullness, vitamin C is the ingredient for you this summer. REFIRM: The gold standard in age correction

How Lamelle Research Laboratories is leading the way in age correction with stem cell conditioning media in skincare Age correction and anti-ageing skincare technologies are advancing by the day, and with so many different ingredients and formulas on the market, it’s sometimes difficult to know which one will yield the best outcomes. When it comes to selecting effective anti-ageing skincare products that offer visible results, innovation is key. That’s where Lamelle Research Laboratories comes in. Known for having introduced many firsts in the South African market, Lamelle is a leader in the field of skincare, continuously pushing the boundaries of what products in the medical aesthetics industry can achieve. Some of their most cutting-edge age correction products are formulated with stem cells, a term you’ve probably heard a lot recently, but perhaps don’t know much about. Simply put, a stem cell is an undifferentiated cell which is capable of dividing rapidly and giving rise to more cells of the same type. These cells do not have a specific role, and can become almost any cell that is required by the body. In medicine, stem cells can be used to replace cells damaged by chemotherapy or disease. They can also regenerate damaged tissue.  In skincare, stem cells have the ability to repair skin cells. When applied to the skin, they may help soften fine lines and wrinkles, improve the skin’s texture and tone and promote cell turnover, resulting in an overall younger-looking appearance.  Stem cells contain amino acids and peptides, which are known for their potential to regenerate the skin. Plus, they’re rich in antioxidants, an essential ingredient in our fight against the signs of ageing.  So how are they utilised in skincare? When we say that a skincare product contains stem cells, we don’t mean that it actually has living human cells in it. Instead, we’re able to utilise stem cell conditioning media enriched with antioxidants, and highly active growth factors, anti-inflammatory cytokines as well as collagen and elastin-encouraging peptides. Discover REFIRM, Lamelle’s most innovative age-correction range  REFIRM Serum and REFIRM Elixir Cream are Lamelle Research Laboratories’ s most advanced anti-ageing solutions to date, harnessing the astounding age correction potential of adipose derived stem cell conditioning media (SCCM), a precious elixir born of stem cell biotechnology. Put simply, “conditioning media” is a stem cell’s “liquid essence” – a precious elixir containing a treasure trove of cell-communicating secreted factors. To create this powerful rejuvenating cocktail, Lamelle extracts the stem cells from adipose tissue (fat cells), proven to deliver the best results over other types of stem cells when it comes to skin rejuvenation, and incubate them in a liquid gel. Once the stem cells have secreted their factors, they’re separated from their essence and the latter is used to create REFIRM. The results? A dramatic improvement in firmness; reduced wrinkling and a brighter, more luminous-looking complexion. Witness Lamelle’s exosomes marvel REFIRM’s SCCM contains highly active growth factors, anti-inflammatory cytokines, potent antioxidants, collagen-encouraging peptides and stem-cell derived exosomes that can transform your skin within just 28 days. Exosomes are naturally occurring microscopic messenger particles with the ability to seek and bind to specific “target cells”. Small, yet mighty, they penetrate deep into your dermis, where they instruct your skin to behave optimally. This includes increasing its ceramide production, turning off inflammation, inhibiting the production of pigmentation and encouraging the creation of healthy new capillaries. Exosomes are unique in their ability to penetrate the skin barrier and deliver their load of growth factors (up to three times as much as stem cells) and other molecules directly to the skin cells. This targeted delivery system can help improve the efficacy of skincare products and treatments, resulting in advanced age correction results. Stem cell exosomes are incredibly powerful when it comes to anti-ageing, but they’ve also shown to function in tissue damage repair, chronic wound healing and the inhibition of wound scar formation. Ultimately, they can be utilised to reverse skin ageing unlike any other skincare ingredient.  Lamelle’s Refirm Elixir Cream has an impressive 3 billion exosomes per ml, while Refirm Serum has 4.8 billion exosomes per ml. REFIRM Serum REFIRM Serum contains 98% of pure adipose-derived SCCM, Lamelle’s highest concentration. For optimal results, apply it twice a day to clean, dry skin before layering on your moisturiser. You can also decant your moisturiser and mix it with two drops of the serum. REFIRM Serum is ideal for use after a controlled injury such as cosmetic skin resurfacing. Do not apply to open wounds or skin that’s otherwise irritated or injured. REFIRM Elixir Cream This ultra-luxurious moisturiser contains SCCM, essential antioxidants, vitamins, soothing panthenol, skin-plumping hyaluronic acid and anti-ageing peptides. It is the ideal moisturiser to be used after the application of REFIRM Serum. Those with a drier skin type could apply it at night. Experience cellular level rejuvenation Within just 28 days, REFIRM Serum and REFIRM Elixir Cream push the boundaries of bioengineering to deliver a visible improvement in firmness, wrinkling and luminosity. Age correction benefits you can expect from this duo include: Firmer skin and reduced wrinkling  Enjoy firmer, more youthful-looking skin as anti-wrinkle proteins increase your body’s production of Type 1 collagen, while down-regulating collagenase, an enzyme that degrades your collagen supply. Antioxidant protection Antioxidant proteins protect your fibroblasts (your skin’s “collagen factories”) from UV radiation-induced damage. They also enhance the activity of superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase, two free radical-fighting super antioxidants that occur naturally within your skin. A brighter complexion REFIRM’s brightening proteins regulate the production of melanin (the pigment that gives your skin its colour) to inhibit hyperpigmentation and create a more evenly toned, luminous-looking complexion. Ground-breaking renewal Wound-healing proteins reduce redness and inflammation making REFIRM a fantastic asset for anyone having undergone any kind of cosmetic skin resurfacing, be it a fractional laser treatment or a peel. Stem cell skincare may be the most advanced, innovative anti-ageing products available to us, and REFIRM by Lamelle Research Laboratories is a cutting-edge example of what can be achieved with

Reap the rewards of our next-generation retinoid

Introducing NEW RA Advance Cream Lamelle Research Laboratories is excited to unveil NEW RA Advance Cream, the first retinoid product to offer a potent dual retinoic acid precursor blend along with a liposomal delivery system for optimum penetration. A combination of two of the most active yet extremely well tolerated retinoids, RA Advance reduces the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, and uneven skin tone and texture while it’s collagen-boosting capabilities enhance skin firmness and elasticity. In addition, you can expect an improvement in radiance courtesy of pigmentation-inhibiting antioxidants – mulberry extract, L-Ergothioneine and lipid soluble vitamin C – while benefiting from super soothing D-Panthenol and Bisabolol.  Not just a proven anti-ageing powerhouse, new RA Advance is also a sensorial delight. Its smooth, silky texture, infused with deeply hydrating hyaluronic acid, ensures optimal absorption while effectively safeguarding your skin barrier. Join the retinoid revolution To appreciate the ground-breaking power of RA Advance Cream’s dual retinoic acid precursor blend – a combination of Retinaldehyde and Hydroxypinacolone Retinoate – you need to know your retinoids. Once Retinol is applied to the skin, it needs to shapeshift twice before being converted into retinoic acid so your skin can reap the benefits. Retinaldehyde, however, is only one conversion away from retinoic acid. This means it delivers faster results than Retinol but with a lower risk of irritation. In fact, Retinaldehyde has been used with great success in patients with rosacea as it has a suppressive effect on the capillaries that cause redness as well as those with sensitive skin. More good news? Retinaldehyde also has antibacterial properties, making it a good choice for those experiencing adult acne. Also, unlike Retinol, Retinaldehyde won’t increase sun sensitivity and doesn’t enter your bloodstream, making it a safer alternative to other retinoids. As for Hydroxypinacolone Retinoate, this revolutionary retinoid can penetrate deeper into the skin than Retinol and is also highly stable, allowing it to get to where it needs to go and work harder for longer to rejuvenate your skin. It’s also less irritating than Retinol and has a lower potential to increase your skin’s sun sensitivity. A new era for cutting-edge retinoids If you’ve been using Lamelle’s bestselling RA Cream but are experiencing more advanced signs of ageing and require more correction for photodamage, RA Advance heralds an exciting new era in superior anti-ageing solutions and is also better suited for those struggling with Acne Rosacea. Climate change is no longer a foreign concept, and we can see the effects of it every day, mostly in the form of extreme weather and day-to-day environmental factors. There is one effect of climate change that you might not see, but may definitely experience, and that is the effect it has on your hair and scalp. Simply put, our hair gets damaged by various environmental factors, including heat waves, UV rays, excessive humidity, drought, air pollution, acid rain, water pollution and static electricity – all of which are, in one way or another, by-products of climate change. The damaged caused by these factors may include split ends, dryness and dehydration, frizzy hair, brittle hair, limp hair, scalp discomfort, excess sebum, hair colour fading and more – the list is seemingly endless. Local cosmetics brand prevents One Million plastic bottles entering landfill, drawing the attention of Woolworths

Be Bare Life, South Africa’s leading plastic-free and sustainable beauty brand is helping Woolworths lead the charge in eco-friendly cosmetics. Unfortunately, cosmetics is one of the largest contributors to single use plastic worldwide. Of the 400 million tons of plastic produced each year, a devastating 14 million end up polluting oceans around the world. For the first time, shampoo and conditioner bars will be available on shelves in 120 Woolworths stores across the country, offering their customers a plastic-free alternative to traditional liquid shampoos and conditioners. ‘A dynamic approach is required to tackle this ongoing pandemic’ says Be Bare Life Co-Founder, Robert Blonski. ‘Companies need to come up with innovative products which attack the plastic waste crises head on. Retailers then need to be willing to stock these products, enabling them adequate exposure. Finally, consumers must embrace the innovation by purchasing the products.’ ‘This last step in the cycle is the most critical factor. Without consumer commitment innovation stalls, and similar eco conscious products are less likely to find their way into major retailers in the future. This breaks the cycle necessary to create fast and effective environmental change, something that is critical’. Many people may not be familiar with the concept of hair care bars, but they are growing in popularity worldwide, especially amongst the younger generation who are actively switching to eco-friendly products. Hair care bars are solid, allowing them to be packaged in cardboard, eliminating the need for plastic. Sadly, only 9% of plastic worldwide has ever been recycled. Furthermore, the alternative liquid shampoos and conditioners consist of up to 90% water – water scarcity becoming more and more of a worldwide issue. ‘Urgent intervention is needed’, reiterates Robert.  ‘To date, Be Bare Life has prevented over one million plastic bottles entering landfill, a statistic we are extremely proud of, however, when considering the billions of plastic bottles the hair care industry produces each year, it is clear we still have a long way to go in shifting consumer behavior.’ ‘It took us 18 months to develop our range’ adds Robert, ‘It is imperative that our products can compete with salon quality hair care, otherwise consumers will not make a permanent switch. We understand that consumers will make an initial purchase based on our eco-friendly credentials, but if the product isn’t effective, they won’t make a repeat purchase. After all, many consumers put quality above all else when making a purchasing decision. We at Be Bare Life have ensured that there is no excuse not to make a shift to sustainable hair care.’ Be Bare Life’s hair care range offers great value for money. Their shampoo bar is the equivalent of three 350ml shampoo bottles, whilst one conditioner bar provides the same usage as five 350ml conditioner bottles. Each bar retails for R109.99. The company only uses vegan ingredients, which are free of sulphates, parabens and petroleum derivates, phthalates and synthetic fragrance (utilising only natural essential oils). Their bars are pH balanced, colour safe, non-irritating and nurturing for hair, scalp and skin. Be Bare Life is also endorsed by Beauty Without Cruelty, making them an animal friendly option. All their products are manufactured locally in Cape Town and they have made it a priority to upskill women in their production facility. Be Bare Life’s diverse hair care range consisting of four shampoo and three conditioner bars which cater to a variety of hair types can be found in Woolworths stores from the 13th of October. Brighten – don’t lighten – and reveal your most beautiful skin with Lamelle Luminesce

At Lamelle Research Laboratories, treating pigmentation is something we do best and that’s because we do it differently. Unlike most beauty brands that focus on either hiding dark marks or slightly fading the superficial ones, we rely on powerful peptides to intervene with the multiple pathways that lead to pigmentation’s creation. This way, we can target what exists, prevent it from reoccurring and even tackle it on a DNA level. That’s the Lamelle difference. Brighten brilliantly Luminesce by Lamelle Research Laboratories is our most technologically advanced hyperpigmentation program to date. While other skincare brands like to tout one “miracle ingredient”, the Luminesce collection boasts a mega-mix of medical grade actives to create a multi-faceted solution to pigmentation, attacking it in every stage of its creation to reveal a radiant, evenly-toned complexion. The key player in Luminesce’s all-star line-up is actually a trio – a triple-complex peptide blend that hinders the proteins that instruct your skin’s melanin factories to go into overdrive (melanin is the pigmentation that gives your skin its colour). Better yet, it also decreases the transfer of melanin into your surrounding skin cells and inhibits the creation of tyrosinase, an enzyme that can also trigger an overproduction of melanin. The word “overproduction” is important because beautiful skin is all about balance – our peptides will only ever regulate your skin’s melanin content, preventing an excess and not interfering with the amount you were born with. In short, you don’t ever have to worry about depigmenting your skin, a potential side-effect of badly-formulated skin-brightening products. In fact, our peptide complex doesn’t just tackle pigmentation – it also stimulates collagen production, so you can also enjoy anti-ageing benefits while you brighten up! Come and get your glow up! You’ll find our innovative peptide blend in both Luminesce Brighter Day and Luminesce Evening Glow. Both of these pigmentation-inhibiting powerhouses also boast groundbreaking DKK-1 gene technology. Studies have shown that melasma sufferers have a defect in their DKK-1, a protein that’s responsible for pigmentation regulation. Fortunately, Lamelle Luminesce can support the role of DKK-1 gene signaling and safely regulate pigment-producing cells at a DNA level (don’t worry – we’re not changing your DNA; we’re just activating lazy genes responsible for pigmentation overproduction. So, to put it simply, we’re helping your body function naturally, but optimally!). The benefits of our patented peptide blend also extend to our bestselling foaming cleanser, Luminesce Brightening Cleanse. It gently cleanses all skin types without over-drying and is formulated with anti-inflammatory Yarrow and Mallow extract (for the record, inflammation is one of the triggers of pigmentation). Blemishes, be gone! Get selfie-ready skin with two new additions to OXY’s Pro Range

Whether you struggle with constant blemishes, or experience flare-ups occasionally, you’ll know the frustration that acne-prone skin can cause. Breakouts can have a major effect on confidence, and with teens and young adults already having to navigate the pressures of high school, university, dating and relationships, there really isn’t a need for any additional stressors. Blemishes seem to have a way of cropping up at the most inconvenient times, like on the day of your matric dance, your graduation day or just before a date. There are ways of covering them up, but prevention is always better than cure. Plus, without proper care, they may leave dark marks or scarring long after they’ve healed. For some, breakouts may ruin an otherwise perfect selfie. For others, it may have long-lasting psychological effects. Whatever the severity of the situation, everyone benefits from stopping breakouts in their tracks and preventing them from reoccurring. From hormones, to genetics, to lifestyle and medication, there are so many factors that may increase your skin’s tendency to break out. One of the most important things to pay attention to, regardless of the cause of the breakout, is a good skincare regime. Using products that contain the right active ingredients won’t just help to strengthen and moisturise your skin, but it may also help prevent the formation of blemishes and breakouts. Cleansing your skin twice a day removes sweat, oil, dirt and impurities – all of which may contribute to clogged pores and breakouts. But that’s not enough – after cleansing, you need to apply a good quality serum or moisturiser that’s going to provide skin with nourishment and hydration while keeping blemishes at bay. Two of the most important ingredients to incorporate in a skincare regime for blemish-prone skin is salicylic acid and vitamin C. Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid that can penetrate deep into the pores. It has exfoliating properties, meaning it sloughs off dead skin cells from the surface of the skin and also helps to curb the skin’s natural oil production. It is anti-inflammatory and antibacterial, and known to unclog pores. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that is renowned for brightening skin and increasing its radiance. Along with its anti-ageing benefits (such as stimulating the production of collagen and fighting free radical damage), it is also an effective solution to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (in other words, the dark marks left behind by breakouts once they’ve healed). Because it has anti-inflammatory properties and helps regulate the skin’s sebum production, it is an excellent ingredient to apply to breakout-prone skin. OXY has been treating breakout-prone skin for generations and is a trusted choice for thousands of South African families. No matter your background, age or skin tone, if you have acne-prone skin, OXY has a product suited to your concerns. OXY is proud to introduce two ground-breaking new products that utilise the power of salicylic acid and vitamin C, to their Pro Range: OXY Pro Range Foaming Facial Cleanser (R129.95) This high-performance facial cleanser contains 2% blemish-busting salicylic acid and hydrating hyaluronic acid for skin that is visibly clearer and less prone to breakouts. Designed for acne-prone skin, it offers a whopping nine skincare benefits: Reduces the appearance of acne; Deep cleansing; Prevents breakouts; Hydrates; Removes dirt and impurities; Unclogs pores; Moisturizes; Softens skin; Exfoliates. OXY Pro Range 10% Vitamin C Serum (R159.95) The perfect addition to your acne-prevention routine, this serum contains 10% vitamin C to reduce the appearance of acne, dark spots and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. It intensely hydrates thanks to the addition of hyaluronic acid and helps heal existing breakouts and prevent new ones thanks to the inclusion of salicylic acid. With regular use, skin appears brighter, smoother and more even toned. This serum offers nine skincare benefits: Reduces the appearance of acne; Even toned skin; Helps fade blemish marks; Prevents breakouts; Clears pores; Intensely hydrates; Brighter and smoother skin; Exfoliates; Rejuvenates skin. 5 Beauty products every woman deserves to have in her arsenal

Women work hard. We are breadwinners, we are mothers, we are partners and homemakers. We look after everyone around us, juggle an endless number of responsibilities and still get it all done. They say there is nothing a woman cannot do – and we can’t help but agree. But even Superwoman needs some time out, which is why we believe that a self-care ritual is an essential part of every woman’s life. A little bit of “me time” every day encourages relaxation and helps recharge one’s batteries – plus – with the right beauty products at hand, it also makes you feel and look your best. Here are the five beauty products every woman deserves to have in her self-care arsenal: Tissue oil Arguably the most versatile of all beauty products, tissue oil is the number one multi-purpose product every woman should have at her disposal. Its benefits are endless – from moisturising dry skin, to minimizing scars and stretch marks, softening cuticles and even nourishing hair, tissue oil does it all. You can even add a few drops to your bath water for a luxurious (and moisturising) soak! Did you know that Bramley Tissue Oil is the number one selling tissue oil in SA? Their vast range of Tissue Oils are enriched with Bio-Pharm oil and vitamin E to intensely nourish, moisturise and protect your skin. Lightly fragranced, Bramley Tissue Oils are suitable for everyday use and offer a host of benefits without breaking the bank. Body butter It is not unusual for skin to become dry at some points during the year, even if you’re diligent about moisturising it. Sometimes a regular lotion may not be enough to relieve stubborn dryness, which is where a body butter comes in handy. A thicker formula with more intense nourishing capabilities, body butter is the ideal all-over solution to dry skin. Instantly hydrating, Bramley’s Lavender Body Butter has a lovely thick texture that leaves skin soft and supple. This body butter can be used on the body, face, hands and feet. Rich in vitamin E and Bio-Pharm oil, the intensive formulation will nourish and moisturise all skin types, whilst providing the protection your skin requires. Hand and nail cream If the pandemic taught us anything, it was the importance of regularly washing our hands. However, soap and hand sanitizer can be very drying on the skin. Throw in cold winter air and you’re likely to experience dry hands and cuticles that need some TLC. A good quality hand and nail cream is essential all year round, but can be a real lifesaver during winter. Bramley Lavender Hand & Nail Cream is enriched with vitamin E and Bio-Pharm oil to leave your hands, nails and cuticles feeling and looking moisturised and conditioned. The formula is quickly absorbed with a non-greasy feel. Roll-on Feeling fresh plays a big part in every woman’s confidence, and a roll on can make all the difference. An effective roll on gives you the peace of mind to go about your day with confidence, knowing that body odour is one less thing you have to worry about. Bramley Magnolia Roll On offers all day freshness and confidence. It protects against perspiration and combats bacteria and odour. Delicately fragranced, this deodorant will leave your skin feeling soft, velvety and fresh with a dry skin feeling. Body wash Turn your daily shower into a self-care pamper session with a beautifully fragranced body wash. A more hygienic alternative to a bar of soap, body wash is usually gentle on the skin, cleansing thoroughly without stripping any moisture, and leaves skin delicately scented. Bramley Magnolia & Vanilla Body Wash cleanses, nourishes and protects the skin while delicately scenting it with feminine notes of magnolia and vanilla orchid. Bramley products are available at PEP Stores nationwide. Bramley Tissue oils, Body Butters and Wipes are available at select Clicks, Pick ‘n Pay and Wholesale stores. Introducing Lamelle Luminesce Rich

A luxurious pigmentation-inhibiting powerhouse offering superior skin barrier support Since its creation, Luminesce by Lamelle has been leading the way in multi-pathway melanogenesis inhibition. In short, it’s our most advanced hyperpigmentation program and now boasts a bright new star – Lamelle Luminesce Rich (R1150). Luminesce Rich is a luxuriously textured pigmentation-inhibiting powerhouse that supports skin barrier function, making it ideal for anyone with a drier skin type wanting to enjoy a more even, radiant-looking complexion and manage pigment irregularities in their skin. A bright new world of benefits Luminesce Rich is so much more than just an “extra moisturising” version of our bestselling Brighter Day – although you’ll appreciate how our indulgent new emollients impart a plush, cushion-like effect. However, unlike Luminesce Brighter Day, Luminesce Rich contains our patented skin barrier repair superhero, Ceramide-P. From the very first application, it gets to work creating a multi-layered lipid structure that mimics healthy human skin to repair your skin’s barrier function while soothing and sealing to ensure your newfound hydration stays put. Luminesce Rich also contains no less than 7 highly effective melanogenesis inhibitors. These include cutting-edge anti-inflammatory amino acids, proven plant extracts, brightening vitamins and innovative Growth Factor-derived brightening peptides, super soothing dexpanthenol and novel genetic modulators. (Don’t worry, we’re not changing your DNA, we’re just activating lazy genes responsible for pigmentation overproduction!) Meet our new A-Team Luminesce Rich still benefits from our hardworking peptide complex that hinders the multiple pathways that lead to an excess of melanin production – but now it’s supported by NEW Nonapeptide-1. Aside from inhibiting the production of melanin, Nonapeptide-1 has a powerful anti-inflammatory effect (and we all know inflammation can trigger hyperpigmentation) and even stimulates the production of your skin’s natural hydrating factors. Luminesce Rich also includes an extremely effective and rapidly-acting amino acid, Undecylenoyl Phenylalanine. It acts as a Melanocyte Stimulating Hormone (MSH) antagonist, meaning that it hinders the formation of pigmentation by preventing MSH from binding to a particular receptor and kicking off a chain of events that lead to an overproduction of melanin. As Lamelle Rich doesn’t contain a retinoid, it can be used twice a day and in combination with any of our correctives serums. As Ceramide-P is a highly effective delivery system, it will improve the absorption and efficacy of any serum. Here’s to a brighter future with Luminesce Rich If you’re wanting unparalleled pigmentation inhibition to create a more luminous-looking complexion AND enhance your skin’s barrier system, NEW Lamelle Luminesce Rich is your ultimate powerhouse. Menopause Awareness

“As a brand and product range that proudly supports conditions that impact women’s reproductive health and well-being, we are passionate about empowering women with knowledge and support around conditions like Menopause that often have a marked impact on women’s lives but are not openly spoken about. 3Sixty Biomedicine through the Salome range is committed to ensuring that women have the resources and support they need for a smoother and better quality of life that includes the menopausal journey,” says Nokuthula Msibi, Project Lead at Salome. Menopause, a natural phase in every woman’s life, ushers in a host of physical and emotional changes. In this transformative journey, accurate information on symptom identification and management is crucial. Menopause typically presents in women between the ages of 45 and 55, heralded by the cessation of menstruation. This significant biological transition can bring forth a range of symptoms, including: Hot Flashes: Sudden and intense heat sensations, often accompanied by sweating. Mood Swings: Emotional fluctuations and increased irritability. Sleep Disturbances: Insomnia or disrupted sleep patterns. Vaginal Dryness: A decrease in vaginal moisture and elasticity. Bone Health Concerns: Increased risk of osteoporosis due to declining estrogen levels. Weight Management Challenges: A tendency to gain weight, particularly around the abdomen. Changes in Libido: A decrease in sexual desire and discomfort during intercourse. There are many misconceptions about symptom management, and very little awareness of what to expect, signs to look out for, and how to manage this common and natural phase of life.  Msibi, explains, “Menopause is known to be a transformative phase in a woman’s life, accompanied by its own physical and emotional challenges. We understand the importance of managing menopausal symptoms effectively and want to ensure that women journey through this phase of their life with confidence and grace. Equipping yourself with practical knowledge and strategies is essential”. The Salome range shares these five tips for women experiencing Menopause in an effort to help women recognise and effectively address the often perplexing and uncomfortable signs of the condition. 1- Educational Resources Knowledge is power, especially when it comes to understanding menopause and its symptoms. Women are encouraged to explore an extensive library of articles, videos, and expert advice to gain a better understanding of menopause, its symptoms, and strategies for managing these symptoms. This information empowers women to make informed decisions about their health and well-being and on the Salome social media platforms there is information women can tap into on the subject. 2 – Nutritional Guidance Proper nutrition can promote overall well-being and help manage menopausal symptoms. Nutritionists and healthcare professionals can offer valuable guidance on dietary choices that may be beneficial during this phase. 3- Lifestyle Recommendations Incorporating regular exercise, stress reduction practices, and self-care strategies into daily routines can contribute to a smoother transition through menopause. A healthy lifestyle can lead to better symptom management and overall well-being.  4 – Community Support Emotional support during the menopausal journey is essential. Women are encouraged to seek out communities where they can share their experiences, ask questions, and provide emotional support to one another. Connecting with others who are going through similar experiences can be a source of comfort and encouragement during this journey. 5 – Treatment Options  Hormonal imbalances during menopause can result in discomforting symptoms. While Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) options are available to address hormonal imbalances, Salome has introduced to its range M-Pause based on herbal extracts for the relief of menopausal symptoms such as hot flushes, profuse sweating and low mood. Consultation with a healthcare professional can provide guidance on what treatment options are suitable and most effective for symptom management. Salome offers a comprehensive range of products designed to manage a range of reproductive health issues experienced by women which includes Salome M-Pause, Salome Pre-MenS, Salome Menstrual Pain, Salome Heavy Menstrual Bleeding, Salome Fertility and Salome Polycos. How hormones (and your monthly cycle) affect your skin

As women, our bodies go through a lot every month. From ovulation, to PMS and menstruating, it might sometimes feel like you’re on a rollercoaster ride. Our monthly cycle has an effect on just about every part of our body – physically, mentally, emotionally, and of course, our appearance. Your menstrual cycle has a major effect on the appearance of your skin, and may be to blame for many of the skincare challenges you’re faced with every month. That’s because our hormones play a major role in skin health, and when hormones surge or fluctuate, it shows on your face. While every woman’s cycle is unique to her, it’s worth examining a typical monthly cycle to understand how and why your skin might operate the way it does – and what you can do about it. It’s normal to experience ups and downs throughout the month, but with a targeted, good quality skincare regime and healthy lifestyle, it’s possible to enjoy healthy, great-looking skin throughout all stages of your cycle. How hormones affect the skin During a typical menstrual cycle, most women will experience bouts of dryness and oiliness. In general, skin becomes most “problematic” just before, and during one’s period. This is the time in which you may experience pesky hormone-related breakouts. Oestrogen production may influence the skin’s texture and thickness and progesterone production plays a major part in the skin’s natural oil production. When these two hormones fluctuate, it has a direct impact on the skin. Your cycle days 1 – 6 Due to low hormone production in the first few days of your cycle, your skin may feel dry or somewhat sensitive. This may make lines and wrinkles more noticeable. Apply plenty of hydrating products to counteract dryness, especially products containing hydrating hyaluronic acid. Try Biomedical Emporium HA Contour Masque (R1341.00), a rich formulation that helps increase the skin’s production of collagen and hyaluronic acid, reinstating the barrier integrity and providing long-lasting hydration. Skin is rejuvenated and the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles is reduced. Your cycle days 7 – 11 (follicular phase) Oestrogen production increases and stimulates cell turnover. For many women, this is the time during which their skin looks and feels its best. This may be a good time to gently exfoliate skin to prevent clogged pores and to include a vitamin C product in your regime to increase radiance. Try Biomedical Emporium Skin Biotic C Cream (R1340.00), a nourishing moisturiser rich in vitamin C, that’s suitable even for sensitive skins. Your cycle days 12 – 16 (ovulation) Oestrogen peaks during ovulation, which may result in glowing skin, but you may also notice that your skin becomes a little oilier during this time. That’s because oestrogen and testosterone production slowly decreases and the production of progesterone slowly increases. If not managed, this may lead to the formation of breakouts. Now is a good time to follow a regime that encourages sebum control and to opt for oil-free formulas. If your skin is prone to breaking out during this time, try Biomedical Emporium Anti-Acne Serum (R834.00). Anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial, this calming serum helps soothe irritation, reduce pore size and decrease excess sebum production, leading to clearer skin. Your cycle days 17 – 28 (luteal phase) During the luteal phase, progesterone reaches its peak, resulting in the skin producing a lot more oil than usual. You may experience hormonal breakouts during this time. This is a good time to use detoxifying products that draw out impurities and products containing salicylic acid to decrease redness and help existing breakouts heal faster. Biomedical Emporium’s Facial Cleanser (R540.00) is a fantastic cleanser to use all month as it contains spot-busting salicylic acid and deeply yet gently cleanses and provides light exfoliation without disturbing the skin’s barrier integrity. Lifestyle tips Regardless of your individual needs throughout your cycle, everyone’s skin will benefit from following a fresh, healthy diet, cutting back on sugar and caffeine and cutting out smoking. Drink plenty of water, get enough sleep, exercise regularly and follow good skin hygiene (that means washing your makeup off every night and stop touching your face!). Your monthly cycle may affect your mood, your energy levels and the appearance of your skin. As your body prepares for possible conception leading up to your menstruation period, plenty of hormonal changes occur, leading to fluctuating levels of oestrogen, testosterone and progesterone. Understanding your cycle is essential, as it affords you the opportunity to better treat your skin at its various stages and address concerns with the right products and ingredients. Five reasons why you should embrace your natural hair

Beauty may be in the eye of the beholder, but that doesn’t stop society from trying to influence what we consider beautiful. In the past, beauty standards were largely defined by celebs and cover girls. Today, social media and its use of filters and photo editing apps plays a major role in how we define beauty. Suddenly everybody looks airbrushed, with perfect skin and not a hair out of place. If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by the influx of “perfect” images on your news feed, you’re not alone. The unrealistic beauty standards portrayed online have left many women feeling insecure. Luckily, things seem to be changing – and fast. The natural beauty movement is growing at a rapid pace, and we’re here for it! Thanks to more and more celebrities and influencers embracing the #nofilter trend, natural beauty is finally getting the spotlight it deserves as we’re beginning to see an influx of filter-free and make-up free images on our screens. Naturally Africa Hair Care believes that natural is better, and that each and every one of us is born with natural beauty. We just have to learn to embrace it. Many women avoid wearing their hair in its natural state because of the extra care and maintenance required to transition. In a time-pressed world, no one can be blamed for going with the most convenient option. However, most women who have transitioned to natural hair will tell you that once they established a routine that worked for them, it was the best decision they ever made. Here are five reasons to embrace your hair and to go natural: #1 It is liberating Some women find the idea of transitioning to natural hair daunting, and we can understand why. During the transitioning phase you may have a bit of an awkward time with your hair while you navigate a new routine. However, once you get past that, having natural hair is incredibly liberating! There is something so beautiful about embracing your natural beauty and wearing it with pride (plus, no more relaxer burns, hair glue or sew-ins is pretty great too). #2 It allows for healthier hair Going natural is a commitment to healthier hair. Once you start seeing your hair’s texture change during the transitional phase, you’ll be empowered by your decision. Chemical relaxers weaken the hair shaft, and with long-term use they may permanently alter the structure of your hair. This could lead to breakage, dehydration and split ends. When you stop applying harsh chemicals to your hair and start using products with gentler and natural formulations, not only will you enjoy softer hair that holds moisture, but you may also see faster and stronger hair growth. #3 It offers versatility One of the biggest perks of natural hair is that it is so versatile when it comes to different hairstyles. Natural hair offers endless possibilities. Some women enjoy protective styles (think braids and Bantu knots) while others may prefer an afro, waves, curls, updo’s and more. The options are endless and you can chop and change to suit your mood (or your outfit!). #4 It is inexpensive Between routine salon visits and buying tools, accessories and products, hair care can become very expensive. Natural hair, on the other hand, is surprisingly affordable. You’ll need to be equipped with some good quality home care products, but thanks to Naturally Africa Hair Care, these won’t break the bank. #5 It is easy to maintain Yes, there is some maintenance to be done when you first transition to natural hair, but as time goes by, you’ll find that with the proper care, it’s actually really easy to manage. Establishing an effective home care regime is easier than you may expect. We recommend starting with the basics – you can build on from there and establish extra products your hair may require as you go along. A basic routine consists of cleansing, conditioning or deep conditioning and a moisture-sealing product. Naturally Africa boasts an effective range of hair care products filled with nourishing ingredients. We recommend starting with these basics: Naturally Africa Conditioning Shampoo This 95% naturally-derived shampoo is mild, gentle and sulphate-free. Infused with sunflower oil, jojoba esters and vegetable proteins, you can look forward to soft, smooth, shiny, hydrated and cleansed hair. It is a 3-in-1 product that removes build-up, assists in detangling your hair and adds lightweight conditioning. Recommended for split ends, dry, damaged and textured hair. Naturally Africa Leave In Conditioner Nourish your hair from root to tip with this lightweight Leave In Conditioner. Infused with jojoba and vegetable protein, this restorative formulation seals in moisture, leaving your hair and scalp soothed and hydrated. Assisting with manageability, this formulation offers heat protection and improves colour wash fastness of dyed hair. Naturally Africa Hair & Scalp Oil This Hair & Scalp Oil has a lightweight, non-greasy formula that consists of a multi-blend of natural derived ingredients including castor oil, tea tree oil, sweet almond oil and vitamin E. Assisting with a healthy canvas, this unique oil adds lustre, shine and glossiness to your look while sealing in moisture. It is recommended for dry hair, scalp care and split ends. However you choose to wear your hair, remember that confidence is the best hairstyle! Bramley Cosmetics & Toiletries

Bramley Cosmetics busts five common winter skincare myths

We live in an age of information, and despite having a wealth of knowledge at our fingertips, it can be difficult to separate fact from fiction. This is especially true for skincare. There are so many myths that are commonly believed to be true, and it’s becoming increasingly difficult to find reliable sources of information. As we head deeper into winter, our skin will need a little more care to stay soft, healthy and hydrated. Plus, it’s time to ditch the myths once and for all and embrace a daily skincare routine that is based on facts – not misconceptions. Bramley Cosmetics, one of SA’s leading skincare manufacturers, busts some of the most common winter skincare myths: #1 Myth: A hot shower or bath moisturises skin Fact: It might feel great to take a hot shower or soak in a hot bath when temperatures drop, but hot water can be damaging to your skin. When your skin is exposed to water that is warmer than your body temperature, your pores open and moisture evaporates. This can lead to dryness and dehydration – the opposite of what you want. We recommend taking a lukewarm to warm shower or bath and to use a creamy or hydrating body wash that won’t strip skin of its natural moisture. Bramley Magnolia & Vanilla Body Wash gently cleanses skin without stripping its natural oils and is lightly fragranced to leave your skin smelling beautiful. #2 Myth: The thicker the cream, the better it hydrates Fact: A moisturiser’s texture and consistency is important, but don’t be fooled – while it may affect how much you enjoy using the product, it doesn’t necessarily affect its ability to hydrate your skin. A moisturiser’s efficacy comes down to its ingredients. A lotion formula can be as hydrating and nourishing as a cream formula, provided it contains good quality moisturising ingredients. Take Bramley’s Magnolia Body Lotion as an example. It has a lovely lightweight formula that doesn’t skimp on performance: It is rich in Bramley’s signature Bio-Pharm oil and Vitamin E, and while it is easily absorbed, it leaves skin feeling soft, moisturised and velvety. #3 Myth: You don’t need sun protection in winter Fact: Most of us grew up thinking that sun protection was only necessary when you hit the beach, but modern studies have shown that the sun’s UV rays are harmful all year round. They can even penetrate your skin on gloomy or overcast days, leading to skin damage, hyperpigmentation and accelerated ageing. While you’ll likely be covered up during winter, it’s important to still apply a sun protection product to any part of your skin that is exposed. #4 Myth: You shouldn’t use a tissue oil in winter Fact: There is a myth doing the rounds that tissue oil is sticky and oily, and that it’ll ruin your clothes or clog your pores in winter. The fact is that tissue oil is actually the perfect product for winter skin. It is extremely good at hydrating skin and locking in moisture, which is just what you need during the colder months. Most tissue oils absorb well and don’t leave skin feeling sticky. Plus, they’re unlikely to clog your pores as most of them have non-comedogenic formulas. Bramley’s Tissue Oils are the number one selling tissue oils in SA for good reason: They’re enriched with Bramley’s signature Bio-Pharm oil to enhance the functionality of the skin’s moisture barrier and Vitamin E for skin cell repairing. Lightly fragranced, they absorb easily, they’re versatile and they’re suitable for all skin types. From hydrating and moisturising skin to treating scars and stretch marks and correcting uneven skin tone, these tissue oils have an almost endless list of benefits. This winter, we recommend trying the Bramley Magnolia Tissue Oil and the Cocoa Heaven Tissue Oil, as their scents are warm and inviting for the colder weather. #5 Myth: You don’t need to moisturise your body if it’s covered in clothes Fact: This couldn’t be further from the truth. The air becomes drier during winter because the humidity (moisture droplets in the air) drops. When this happens, the air will try draw moisture from anywhere it can, including your skin and hair. That’s why our skin is prone to being so dry in cold weather. Your skin may be protected by clothing, but that won’t stop it from becoming drier. The only way to combat this dryness is to apply moisturising body care products. Most skincare experts recommend applying a body cream or lotion daily, within a couple of minutes after your shower when your skin is still a little damp, as this helps trap water and increase hydration. Instantly hydrating, Bramley’s range of Body Butters have a gorgeous thick texture and leaves skin soft and supple. These buttery body butters offer all-over moisturiser and can be used on body, face, hands and feet. Rich in Vitamin E and Bio-Pharm oil, the intensive formulation will nourish and moisturise all skin types, whilst providing the protection your skin requires. We recommend the crowd-favourite Magnolia and deliciously indulgent Cocoa Heaven variants for winter. Bramley products are available at PEP Stores nationwide. Everyday must-haves for women’s health

Women have a lot on their plates. From bearing and raising children to maintaining a home, excelling in their careers, spending quality time with their partners and friends and keeping up with hobbies – every hour in the day is filled to the brim. As a result, many women admit not always prioritizing their health and wellness needs. While this may seem sustainable in the short-term, it can have catastrophic effects in the long-term. It’s important for all women and girls to reflect on their individual health needs and to take proactive steps to improve their overall health. This includes going for regular health tests and screenings, getting active, maintaining a healthy weight, eating well and finding ways to manage and cope with mental health challenges. While it’s important to visit your healthcare providers for routine check-ups regularly, there are also plenty of little things you can do daily to maintain your physical and mental health Sip on healthy drinks In the pursuit of making healthy eating choices, we sometimes forget that drinks also play a major part in our dietary health. Limit your daily intake of caffeine and alcohol and avoid sugary drinks as far as possible. Be sure to drink plenty of water, and for an added tasty health boost, include SELA Women’s Tea (R62.95) in your diet. It contains traditional rooibos, black tea and wild ginger to provide support to women experiencing painful ovulation, period cramps or hot flushes, and may also help alleviate the symptoms associated with menopause. This tea, packed with ginger’s anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties, may help relieve pain and bloating, plus it is free of artificial flavours, colours and preservatives. Take care down there It’s important to keep your intimate area clean and fresh, but regular soaps and body washes may upset the delicate pH balance or lead to itching or discomfort. That’s because most of them contain fragrances and colourants that cause irritation. The answer? Switch to a cleanser that was specifically designed to be used “down there.” Summers Eve Lavender Night Time Cleansing Wash (R129.99) is uniquely formulated and pH-balanced to match your body’s natural chemistry and is perfect to use in the evening. It removes odour-causing bacteria and is scented with soothing lavender and amber which are safe to use around the vaginal area. If you prefer a morning shower, try Summers Eve Active Daily Performance Wash (R129.95) which offers energized cleansing that helps you feel ready for the day. It contains Acti-Cool™, a blend of eucalyptus and peppermint oils that has a cooling and refreshing effect on the skin. Always pH-balanced to match your body’s natural chemistry, it is perfect for an active lifestyle A supplement for every need Even when you follow a healthy, balanced diet, chances are you still aren’t consuming all the essential nutrients your body needs to function optimally. We recommend daily supplementation – not just with a multi-vitamin product that offers overall protection, but also with products designed to help support your body when it has specific needs. For example, when you’re going through a stressful time, supplementing with a product like JSHealth Mild Anxiety + Stress (R649.00) may help relieve the symptoms of stress and irritability, so you feel calm and relaxed. Want to improve the health of your skin, hair and nails? JSHealth Vitality X + Collagen (R999.00) is derived from wild cod skin and contains aloe vera silica and vitamins C & E to nourish hair, skin, and nails. It also promotes and maintains collagen formation for health, skin elasticity and hydration. Boost your overall health and immune system with a multi-vitamin product that contains a variety of essential vitamins and minerals. NutriPure Multivitamin Complete Gummies (R145.00) is packed with a balanced dosage of essential vitamins and minerals which are factors in the maintenance of good health. Has your immune system taken a bit of a beating? NutriPure Immune Support Gummies (R145.00) contains six essential vitamins necessary to boost and maintain a healthy immune system. Healthy skin The skin is the body’s largest organ, and it’s what protects us from bacteria and other harmful aggressors. Maintaining healthy skin isn’t just about looking good, it’s also about strengthening, nourishing and protecting skin so that it can continue protecting us. One of the most important things you can do to protect your skin is to apply a sun protection product daily. The sun’s UV rays aren’t just responsible for burning skin – they’re also responsible for accelerating the ageing process, causing hyperpigmentation and even skin cancer. Be sure to apply a broad spectrum SPF every day, regardless of the weather. Piz Buin Allergy Face Cream SPF50 (R199.00) offers high sun protection and a unique anti-irritant shield complex to help strengthen the skin’s resilience to the sun. Maintaining a skincare regime twice a day will not only benefit the appearance of your skin, but also the health of your skin. It’s essential to cleanse, treat and moisturise and exfoliate a couple of times per week to remove dead skin cells from the surface of the skin and prevent breakouts. With winter officially here, skin is bound to need extra moisture as we head into icy temperatures. We recommend cleansing twice a day with a hydrating cleanser like Creightons H2O Boost Foaming Gel Wash (R119.95) and following with Creightons H2O Boost Day Gel (R179.95) in the morning and Creightons H2O Boost Overnight Mask (R179.95) in the evening. The collection contains hyaluronic acid, a powerful ingredient that helps restore moisture in the skin. For effective exfoliation, we recommend NIP+FAB Vitamin C Scrub Fix (R249.95), an illuminating exfoliating scrub infused with vitamin C, coffee seed extract and coconut oil to effectively cleanse, nourish and renew the skin. If you prefer a chemical exfoliant, try NIP+FAB Salicylic Fix Night Pads (R349.95), which effectively exfoliates while protecting against the formation of breakouts and clogged pores. Whatever your age or health status, remember that small daily self-care practices can have a major positive effect on your physical and mental wellbeing.

5 SIMPLE WAYS TO KEEP YOUR SKIN HYDRATED THIS WINTER

Winter is officially here, and by now you’ve likely replaced your lightweight moisturiser for a richer, creamier alternative, and your foamy gel cleanser for a milkier version. Most of us are really good at adapting our facial skincare routine to accommodate the colder weather, but how much attention do you pay to your body care regime? Cooler temperatures are synonymous with dry skin. That’s because a drop in temperature means a drop in humidity (water particles in the air). When the humidity drops and the air becomes drier, it’ll try extract moisture from anywhere it can – including your skin. And that’s how we end up with scaly, dry and sometimes even rough skin in winter. Dry skin can occur anywhere on the body, and if left untreated it can become sensitive and flaky. Don’t skimp on your body care regime this winter – a few small lifestyle changes and the right products will ensure your skin stays soft, smooth and hydrated all season long. #1 Stay hydrated In winter we’re less likely to stick to our eight glasses of water per day, and more likely to reach for another warm cup of coffee or hot chocolate. Staying hydrated isn’t just important for your organs and gut health, but it’s also essential for hydrated skin. If you simply cannot get through eight glasses of water per day, try substitute one or two of them with a herbal tea instead – you’ll still benefit from the water content without additional caffeine or sugar. #2 Avoid hot showers There is nothing better than a hot shower when it’s chilly outside, right? Wrong! Hot water may feel great when you’re cold, but it’s extremely dehydrating. It strips skin from its natural oils and may leave it feeling tight, dry and sensitive. Dermatologists recommend sticking to lukewarm – warm showers. Not sure how to gauge the temperature? If your skin is flushed (pink) after your shower, the water was too hot. #3 Incorporate an oil in your regime Our skin is lipid-loving, which means that oils are a great option to moisturise and nourish it. Not only do they go to great lengths to put moisture back into the skin, but body oils also feel ultra-luxurious when applied to the skin. We recommend applying a nourishing body oil after your shower to replenish moisture. Skin Oil from Africa’s Body Oil range contains a natural composition of African extracts that help the skin remain hydrated and smooth for longer. Each variant has been carefully crafted to cater to a variety of different needs. This winter, we recommend trying Hydrating Rosehip Oil (R39.95). Rosehip Oil is known for its large amount of antioxidants and essential fatty acids. The oil can be used to hydrate dry or itchy skin as well as reduce the presence of scars and stretch marks. If you’re a coconut oil fan, try Skin Oil from Africa’s Moisturizing Coconut Oil (R39.95). Coconut oil is known for being anti-inflammatory, intensely moisturising and for its ability to protect the skin’s barrier function. Skin Oil from Africa’s Coconut Oil assists in keeping skin hydrated and healthy. Both oils are fragrance-free and suitable for sensitive skin. #4 Lock in moisture with a body cream The benefits of using a body cream are endless… Did you know that is also has the ability to lock in moisture from products applied before it? For the ultimate moisture boost, we recommend following your body oil application with a little bit of body cream. It’ll lock in all the moisture and nutrients from your oil and help protect your skin’s barrier function. Skin Oil from Africa’s body cream range contains a natural composition of African extracts combined with Almond Oil and Shea Butter, creating the perfect body cream formula. Perfect for dry skin, the range promises to moisturize, hydrate, purify and boost your skin according to your everyday needs. Follow your Rosehip Oil application with Skin Oil from Africa Rosehip Oil Body Cream (R59.95). It hydrates skin while providing 48 hours of intense moisture for dry skin. Follow your Coconut Oil application with Skin Oil from Africa Coconut Oil Body Cream (R59.95). It has an extensive list of benefits, the most predominant being its moisturizing properties. #5 Up your daily nutrients Our lifestyles go through major changes in winter, and our diets aren’t exempt. Salads and smoothies suddenly aren’t that appealing anymore, and soups, stews and curries become far more enticing. Certain foods and nutrients may help maintain the skin’s moisture levels: omega-3 oils (found in fish, eggs, and avocado), antioxidants (found in green tea and fresh fruit and veg) as well as vitamins A, B, C D and E may all contribute to healthier, hydrated skin. If you’re worried that you’re not getting enough nutrients from your diet, you may want to consider including a good quality daily supplement in your diet. Follow these simple steps and enjoy softer, healthier and moisturised skin all season long. About Skin Oil from Africa Skin Oil from Africa offers a unique range of skin oil and body creams crafted in Africa. These products are formulated with care featuring a natural composition of key African extracts; Bio-Pharm Oil, Hemp Seed Oil, Rosehip and Coconut Oil. The benefits of plant oils in cosmetics are based on both the physical and biochemical effects of the fatty acids which are key elements in the Skin Oil from Africa Range. Each of our variants have the added benefits of Vitamin E, rich in antioxidants helping ones skin maintain a youthful look. The addition of Sweet Almond Oil assists in skin hydration, repair, healing and anti-inflammatory properties of this range. Winter? No problem! Nilotiqa is here to protect your hair all season long

In South Africa, winter arrives in the blink of an eye. We’ve barely worn our in-between-weather clothing and already it’s time to dig out the parkas and puffer jackets. For many of us, winter is a joy: sipping hot chocolate in front of the fire, a lazy lie-in on the weekend and the sound of the rain… But for those of us with brittle, dry or damaged hair, this season can get tricky. When the colder temperature sets in, the humidity drops, which means that there is less moisture in the air. When this happens, the air draws moisture from anything it can – including your hair and skin! That’s why dry hair is one of the most common winter beauty concerns, and why we are more prone to breakage, frizz and split ends during the colder months. We’re always told that we need to adapt our skincare routines when we move from summer to winter. Lighter products get swapped out for richer, more nourishing formulations to combat the effect of the cold on our skin. Our hair is very much the same: when the cold weather sets in, hair needs extra moisture and nutrients to keep it soft, hydrated and healthy. Protect your hair from the elements and give it a moisture boost by following these winter hair care tips courtesy of Nilotiqa. Don’t over-shampoo Washing your hair regularly in summer is essential to rid your hair and scalp of sweat and bacteria. When the weather cools down, try to shampoo a little less frequently and change your regular shampoo for a gentler formula. When we shampoo our hair we also remove the natural oils produced by our scalps, and in winter, these are essential to keep our hair moisturised. Try: Nilotiqa Shea & Coco Moisturising Conditioner (R119.99). It is the perfect shampoo for winter as it replenishes lost moisture in dry and brittle hair. Active ingredients shea butter and coconut oil deeply nourish hair, while others gently cleanse and purify hair, removing build-up. Look after your scalp It’s not unusual for one’s skin to get dry during winter, and that goes for the scalp too! A dry scalp can become itchy and uncomfortable, and may even flake. Avoid this by moisturising your scalp frequently. Try: Nilotiqa Shea & Coco Scalp and Hair Oil (R99.99). This lightweight oil easily penetrates hair and skin to seal in the moisture and is packed with high amounts of vitamin E and C, leaving hair and scalp nourished and moisturised. Try leave-in conditioning products If you’ve never tried a leave-in conditioner, now is your time! It helps replenish moisture and combat the effects of hot styling aids and cold winds. Plus, it’ll leave your hair feeling soft, lustrous and moisturised. If you like a lighter texture, try Nilotiqa Shea & Coco Repairing Leave-In Conditioner (R99.99) which rehydrates hair and protects it from breaking. It has a creamy formula that softens the hair while restoring its moisture balance. If you prefer a buttery texture, try: Nilotiqa Shea & Coco Deep Moisture Butter (R100.00). It replenishes the hair’s moisture and is suitable for daily use. The formula contains shea butter and coconut oil to replenish moisture – it deeply nourishes while locking in moisture. Don’t skip your weekly hair mask Most of us need the extra moisture boost that a hair mask offers, and during winter, a weekly mask can make a big difference in repairing and protecting hair. Hair masks contain more concentrated ingredients than conditioners, which includes stronger moisturisers and hydrators that replenish and lock in moisture. Try: Nilotiqa Shea & Coco Intensive Repair & Strengthen Mask (R129.99). It helps to strengthen and repair hair, while preventing breakage and damage. This intensive treatment deeply penetrates hair follicles to condition strands with a protein-enriched formula. It is perfect for restoring damaged natural hair. Enriched with protein, it penetrates the hair follicles for an intensive hair treatment. Give curls some extra definition Curly hair is naturally drier than straight hair, so it’ll need plenty of additional moisture during winter. Because of the low humidity, curly girls may also find their hair more prone to frizz, with less definition and less manageability. We recommend applying a curl enhancing product like Nilotiqa Shea & Coco Curl Enhancing Activator (R99.99), which contains coconut oil, shea butter, jojoba and sunflower to enhance and define your curls, adding healthy shine too. Simply apply to damp hair and leave in. Prefer a richer formula? Try Nilotiqa Shea & Coco Moisturising Curling Cream (R130.00) which combines coconut oil, shea butter, pro-vitamin B5, grapeseed oil and sunflower oil to turn dry, brittle hair into luscious curls, free from frizz. Don’t let winter get the better of your hair this season – with these simple adjustments to your regime, you’ll have soft, healthy and moisturized hair all winter long. 7 Ways to keep your hair hydrated and healthy this winter

Each season has its own set of unique challenges when it comes to our hair, but none are quite as harsh as winter. The drastic drop in humidity means the air will draw moisture from wherever it can – including your hair and skin – and icy temperatures outside can be particularly harsh on hair. Throw in some indoor heating and you’ll probably find your hair crying out for help. It’s common for all hair types and textures to experience breakage and split ends during winter. During this time you’ll need to take some extra precautions to protect your hair from the elements, keep it hydrated and give it that extra bit of nourishment to keep it looking its best. Try these simple tips to maintain your hair’s health and keep it looking great this winter. Choose moisturising ingredients When temperatures drop your hair will need extra moisturisation and the best way to achieve this is by using hair products rich in moisturising ingredients. Coconut oil is considered one of the best ingredients to moisturise and strengthen hair as it is naturally rich in antioxidants and fatty acids, making it a great ingredient to incorporate into your winter hair care regime. Try Two Oceans Coconut Oil & Argan Curl Quench Shampoo and Conditioner (R109.95 each) which contains Coconut Oil and Argan to moisturize, add luster and shine, soften hair and increase its strength and manageability. Commit to a weekly hair treatment A weekly hair mask or treatment has the ability to take hair from “good” to “great.” It helps replenish lost moisture, restore hair and prevent damage. Try Two Oceans Moroccan Argan Oil Intense Conditioning Mask (R99.95). This mask is an intensive treatment that may help improve the look and feel of dry, damaged hair. It’s a great addition to your winter hair care regime. Tackle frizz head-on We often associate frizz with high humidly and hot weather, but in reality it’s a very common problem in winter too. In fact, when humidity drops and the air becomes very dry, our hair is likely to get frizzy, dry and even unruly. If this sounds like you, we recommend switching over to a frizz control hair care range like the Two Oceans Castor Oil & Argan range. The Shampoo and Conditioner (R109.95 each) is infused with African Castor Oil that helps de-frizz hair and Argan Oil which is naturally rich in vitamin E, F, A & C, thereby increasing the hair’s moisture levels and making it less prone to frizz. Follow with Two Oceans Castor Oil & Argan Anti Frizz Serum (R109.95), which is naturally rich in antioxidants and deeply conditions and revives hair for superior frizz control and soft, glossy results. Never dry your hair without applying a heat protectant product If possible, try to cut back on heat styling during winter as heat combined with dryness is almost certain to lead to damage. However, if you can’t go without styling, or if you simply can’t bear to air dry your wet hair in the cold, be sure to apply a heat protector before blow-drying / styling. Two Oceans Moroccan Argan Oil Heat Defense Spray (R79.95) is infused with Keratin and Moroccan Argan Oil which is naturally rich in vitamin E, F, A & C and high in antioxidants. This heat defense spray helps to protect hair from damage when heat styling at temperatures up to 220˚C. It is suitable for all hair types and can be applied to wet or dry hair. Lock in moisture with a hair serum During winter we apply a richer night cream to our skin to boost its moisture levels while we sleep, and the same should be done for our hair in the form of a serum or oil. Two Oceans Moroccan Argan Oil Intense Hair Serum (R109.95) has a concentrated formula rich in Keratin and Moroccan Argan Oil which not only improves the look and feel of dry and damaged hair but it also nourishes hair to keep it healthy and shiny. Don’t go outside with wet hair Did you know that our hair is super vulnerable when it’s wet? In extremely cold temperatures wet hair can actually freeze outside. When you go outside with wet or damp hair you increase its risk of breaking, so it’s best to ensure your hair is 100% dry before heading outdoors. About Two Oceans Haircare Expertly formulated with Africa’s finest ingredients, the Two Oceans collection provides solution-focused products to treat all hair types. Offering a value range of 1L argan-infused products, as well as a professional range with more targeted formulations for colour treated hair to restore and maintain healthy colour and hair, the brand is vegan, uses up to 90% naturally derived ingredients in their products and offers clean formulations. Practical tips to care for sensitive skin by SKNLogic

If you’ve ever battled with sensitive skin, you’re not alone. It is fast becoming one of the most common concerns experienced by men and women all over the world. And it can be particularly difficult during winter – because of the low humidity and icy temperatures, this is considered the most challenging season for sensitive skin. There are so many different causes, that sometimes it may be difficult to pinpoint the reason for your skin’s sensitivity. This ranges from exposure to pollution and chemical irritants, to hormonal issues, stress, diet and even ingredients in the skincare products we apply. How will you know if you have sensitive skin? Skin sensitivity may manifest in a variety of different ways such as redness, itchiness, stinging, burning, flaking, tightness or dryness, and may be a constant concern, or flare up from time to time. It can affect the entire body – not just the face – and sometimes goes hand-in-hand with breakouts and dehydration. When it comes to treating skin concerns, it is always best to get to the root of the problem. If your sensitivity is persistent, we recommend booking an appointment with your dermatologist, who will help you to identify the cause of your sensitivity and recommend suitable treatment. Sometimes it’s possible to beat sensitivity by changing your diet or skincare routine, while other times it may require medical intervention such as treating hormonal conditions. One of the trickiest causes is environmental aggressors and pollution, as we simply can’t all move to the countryside to avoid exposure. However, all is not lost. Whatever the cause of your sensitivity, there are a couple of simple things you can do daily to protect and soothe your skin while limiting sensitivity. Avoid hot water A hot shower may feel fantastic during the colder months, but hot water is known to exasperate sensitivity. Most dermatologists recommend showering in warm water under 40 degrees. Not sure how to tell if the temperature is right? If your skin is flushed or red afterwards, the water was too hot. Use a milky or creamy cleanser Gel cleansers are great for oily skin (especially during summer), but they can sometimes strip dry and sensitive skins of moisture. We recommend using a milky or creamy cleanser as these have moisturising properties that will help retain the skin’s moisture. Try SKNLOGIC Gentle Cleanse Cream (R343.00), a gentle, pH balanced, soap-free, creamy cleanser that cleanses without disrupting the skin’s moisture barrier. It hydrates the skin, leaving it feeling conditioned and nourished. Be aware of bacteria Bacteria is all around us, and harmful breakout-causing bacteria lurks in more places than you may suspect. Be sure to change your pillowcase regularly as sweat and product build-up may irritate sensitive skin while you sleep. Wash your makeup brushes frequently and disinfect your cellphone daily – both are home to plenty of spot-causing bacteria. Hydrate Sensitive skin is prone to dehydration, so it’s essential to apply moisture-boosting skincare products that are gentle yet effective (and free from potentially harmful and harsh ingredients). Try SKNLOGIC Omega Face Oil (R265.00). This lightweight, non-greasy facial oil can be used as a moisturiser, treatment product or primer and is suitable for sensitive and compromised skin. It contains nourishing Omega 3, 5, 6, 7 & 9, vitamins C and E and ceramides. Protect your skin from the sun We know how dangerous the sun’s UV rays are for all skin types, and sensitive skin may be extra vulnerable to its powers. Try to avoid spending time outdoors during peak hours (10am – 2pm). If you do go outside, wear a broad brimmed hat and sunglasses and cover up with loose fitting clothing. And most importantly – always apply a broad spectrum SPF to exposed skin. SKNLOGIC Protect 40 (R305.00) is a broad spectrum sun protection cream that provides effective UVA and UVB protection and anti-ageing benefits. Maintain a healthy diet Sometimes sensitive skin is linked to certain foods in one’s diet, and sometimes it is not. The truth is that everyone’s skin, regardless of the different skin types, will benefit from a diet rich in fresh fruit and veg, lean protein, healthy fats and fibre. In some cases gluten and dairy have shown to affect sensitive skin, so if you’re prone to sensitivity, try to cut back. Skincare regime One of the most important factors in caring for sensitive skin is your choice of skincare products. Harsh ingredients and artificial fragrances or colourants are likely to aggravate sensitivity, as may some preservatives and additives. The key is to find a skincare range that offers effective products that are also gentle. SKNLOGIC products do not contain artificial colourants and fragrances, mineral oil, lanolin, parabens, Sulphates or S.D Alcohol, making them the perfect choice for sensitive and dry skins. SKNLOGIC products are made with the highest quality antioxidants, hydrators, moisturisers and natural ingredients to nourish and protect skin. There is no one-size-fits-all solution for sensitive skin, but with the right products and lifestyle choices, it’s possible to minimise sensitivity and keep skin soothed and moisturised. About SKNLOGIC SKNLOGIC Cosmeceutical skincare aims to provide a skincare solution that works with the skin’s biological processes to achieve visible results. SKNLOGIC has a synergistic approach to science and nature, offering powerful formulas with optimal concentrations of active ingredients to actively improve skin health and appearance from underneath the skin. We use the maximum concentration of key active ingredients and use the highest grade of quality ingredients from around the world.   https://sknlogic.com/   Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SknLogic/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sknlogic/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/SKNLOGIC

OGX The most important ingredients to incorporate in your hair care regime

The hair care market is flooded with a wide variety of ingredients, all claiming to be the very best for your hair. How can one know which ingredients are proven to deliver results and give your hair the very best nourishment it needs? We’ve determined five ingredients that are trusted and proven to nourish, strengthen, moisturise and hydrate your hair: Blonde Brass be gone with OGX Blonde Enhanced + Purple Toning Shampoo! This highly pigmented and potent dark purple toning shampoo is easy to use and helps get rid of brass with every rinse. Try: OGX Blonde Enhance+ Purple Toning Shampoo (from R209.99) use it to brighten and colour-correct yellow tones on silver, pre-lightened or natural blonde hair with strengthening ingredients like keratin, purple fig and iris. After rinsing, follow it up with your favourite OGX conditioner such as OGX Biotin or OGX Brazilian Keratin Therapy. Argan oil Aragn oil comes from the seeds of the argan tree, which is native to Morocco. It has been used for centuries, not only to nourish skin and hair, but also as a culinary ingredient. It has a sweet, nutty flavour and is filled with nourishing fatty acids and antioxidants. It is often referred to as “liquid gold” because of its scarcity and value. Argan oil is rich in vitamins, including a high concentration of vitamin E and minerals. It has the ability to hydrate and soften hair and lock in moisture. The presence of vitamin E and essential fatty acids helps increase the hair’s elasticity, restore shine and prevent breakage. Try: OGX Argan Oil of Morocco Shampoo (R199.95) and Conditioner (R199.95) which cleanses hair while moisturising each strand with a precious blend of Argan oil of Morocco. The luxurious shampoo strengthens your tresses while restoring shine and softness. The conditioner penetrates the hair shaft to nourish and strengthen locks, while creating soft, shiny, healthy looking hair. Biotin Biotin is a water-soluble, complex B vitamin naturally found in certain dairy products, meats, nuts, bananas and more. It helps the body convert food into energy and is a crucial vitamin to keep the eyes, skin, liver, hair and nervous system healthy. People with a Biotin deficiency may often suffer from hair loss, and Biotin is thus used in hair care products to promote thicker and healthier hair growth. Try: OGX Thick & Full Biotin & Collagen Shampoo (R199.95), which contains a blend of vitamin B7, biotin, collagen and hydrolysed wheat protein to create the appearance of thicker, fuller and healthier-looking hair. OGX Thick & Full Biotin & Collagen Conditioner(R199.95) has a volumising formula to create fuller-looking and more textured hair. Keratin Keratin is a protein produced naturally by the body. It is responsible for keeping the hair, skin and nails healthy and strong. Keratin is used in hair care products because of its ability to make the cells in the hair stronger and more resilient. It also has the ability to make hair smoother, by smoothing down the cells that overlap to form hair strands (also known as the hair cuticle). This makes hair look fuller and glossier. Try: OGX Brazilian Keratin Therapy Shampoo (R199.95) and Conditioner (R199.95). The duo strengthens and softens hair while helping to smooth the cuticle for strong locks. The luxurious blend of coconut oil, keratin proteins, avocado oil and cocoa butter leaves your hair smelling and looking amazing. Coconut oil Coconut oil is a white solid fat (which becomes a clear liquid when heated), derived from coconuts. It has antimicrobial and antioxidant properties and is a rich source of saturated fats. It is widely used in cooking, but in recent years it has also gained popularity in the cosmetics industry. Coconut oil has many benefits for hair. Because of its rich fatty content, it is an excellent moisturiser. It has the ability to deeply penetrate the hair strands, making them more flexible, increasing their strength and helping to prevent them from breaking. Those who use coconut oil regularly have also seen improvement in hair growth, less dandruff, increased shine and less frizz and flyaways. Try: OGX Coconut Miracle Oil Shampoo (R199.95) which deeply moisturises thick to coarse hair with a combination of coconut oil, essence of tiare, and vanilla bean extract. These three natural ingredients revive and soften hair, leaving it silky smooth and hydrated. The matching Conditioner (R199.95) drenches dry, damaged hair in moisture, nourishing parched strands with a combination of coconut oil, essence of tiare, and vanilla bean extract. More care for your hair – Oils The importance of treating your hair goes far beyond just having nice looking and feeling hair. Oils play an important role in protecting hair from regular wear and tear. Oiling hair regularly reduces hygral fatigue (damage to your hair follicles) or the swelling and drying of hair. Oils protect the follicle from surfactants by filling the gap between cuticle cells. OGX has a range of oils that will nourish and protect your hair. But which one to choose? Dry, damaged hair needing a bit of oomph: Try: OGX Coco Miracle Pen Oil 100ml (R209.95) This ultra rich repairing blend with coconut oil, essence of tiare and vanilla bean extract helps to repair, soften and revive strands. Discover silky, soft, island girl hair with the use of this penetrating coconut oil. Try: OGX Renew Moroccan Oil Dry/coarse 100ml (R209.95) OGX Extra Penetrating Renewing + Argan Morocco Oil 100 ml helps to revive and moisturise dry and coarse hair. The powerful blend of argan oil of Morocco leaves your locks smooth and shiny by helping to repair damage and restore lustre to each strand. How to use: Apply a small amount to the palm of your hands, rub hands together, then apply evenly to damp (towel-dried) hair. For extra nourishment use on the ends of dry hair. About OGX We’re inspired by originality, and it shows up in all we do, from how we make and package our products to the real, diverse and Photoshop-free passion-fuelled people who represent our brand. What is biodegradable beauty?

The beauty world is becoming greener, and by now you’re probably familiar with terms like “clean beauty”, “natural”, “organic” and “vegan”. But what about “biodegradable” beauty? The term “biodegradable” is used to describe any material or object that is capable of being decomposed, or to decay naturally without leaving waste behind. Think about natural items like bamboo or cork: When left to decompose, they are broken down by micro-organisms like bacteria or fungi, and disappear without contributing to pollution. This is in stark contrast to non-biodegradable material such as plastic, for example, which contributes to pollution and may take up to 1000 years or more to decompose. What does this mean for beauty products? Biodegradable beauty products such as soaps or shampoos have minimal to zero adverse environmental impacts. Most non-biodegradable beauty products contain antibacterial and preservative ingredients that help extend the product’s shelf life, but may cause harm to the environment once it is disposed of. Why is biodegradable beauty important for the planet? Biodegradable beauty products are great for your skin, and also for the planet. It’s no secret that pollution and particularly plastic pollution, is one of the most pressing environmental issues of our time. Our World In Data reports that the world is currently producing more than 380 million tonnes of plastic every year, which is a staggering statistic, especially when you consider how much of it will end up in landfills (and that it’ll take 1000 years to decompose). Then there’s the issue of cosmetic wastewater polluting the ocean. Many of the chemicals used to formulate traditional cosmetics may be detrimental to our water quality. It was widely reported when the island of Hawaii banned the distribution of sunscreen products containing oxybenzone and octinoxate (two very common sunscreen ingredients) in 2021. Their reason? Research has shown that these ingredients cause significant damage to coral reef ecosystems, including coral bleaching and even coral DNA damage. It’s sad but true that the beauty industry is a major contributor to global pollution and environmental damage. However, there is some good news. In recent years we’ve seen a major influx of global trends steering towards greener and sustainable living, and sustainable lifestyles seem to keep gaining momentum. Consumers have learnt that making small changes in your day-to-day life is not only easier than it sounds, but it makes a real difference to the bigger picture. When purchasing and using biodegradable beauty products, you don’t contribute to the cosmetic wastewater issue and you can rest assured that you’re not polluting the world’s oceans with harmful synthetic ingredients. What are the benefits of using biodegradable products on your body? We know why biodegradable beauty is important for the planet, but did you know that it’s also beneficial for your skin? A lot of beauty products contain harsh ingredients that may cause skin to react or become sensitized. We also don’t know all the long-term effects of these synthetic ingredients. Biodegradable beauty products are natural and free from toxic synthetic materials. They are gentler on the skin and less prone to cause irritation. They do not contain any harmful by-products or controversial cheap fillers, but instead, are filled with the very best of what Mother Nature has to offer. For over 20 years, Earthsap has been known for their high quality, natural biodegradable beauty and household products. Their products offer completely safe and toxin-free formulas, and have been formulated with the help of skilled microbiologists and are made using pure plant-extracted oils and other natural ingredients. You’ll find no synthetic fragrances, irritants or allergens in their body care products as they’re completely chemical-free and gentle. Plus – you’ve guessed it – Earthsap formulas are biodegradable! A few of our favourite must-have Earthsap beauty products include: Earthsap Orange & Mandarin Foam Bath (R94.95) Soft bubbles and a fresh citrus fragrance are a match made in bath time heaven. Earthsap Foam Bath with Orange & Mandarin is an all-natural, SLS-Free bubble bath formula that will care for your skin as you soak. It’s also biodegradable, making it safe for the planet’s waterways. There is nothing like a fresh set of nails or lashes to make you look and feel fantastic, however, for many women a regular trip to the salon is no longer an option. It’s no secret that salon visits have become pricey, and with the general cost of living going up all the time, many of us have had to cut back on our beauty budgets.
