At 4pm on 15 October, the Gauteng Department of Education began sending placement offers for Grade 1 and Grade 8. Within a day, about 300,000 had gone out. Parents had applied for 346,556 children for 2027: 169,221 starting Grade 1 and 177,335 starting Grade 8.
Some of those SMSes named a school the parent didn’t pick. Demand at the most popular schools outruns their space, and more than 20 secondary schools each received over 1,800 applications for Grade 8. When every school on your list is full, the department offers a place at the nearest school that has room.
That stage of the process runs from 2 to 20 November. If an offer like that has landed on your phone, these are the dates and choices in front of you.
What Can I Do If My Child Was Placed at a School I Didn’t Choose?
You have seven days to respond to any offer. You can accept it as final, which confirms the place, or give it a provisional acceptance while you wait to hear from the schools on your list.
If your child was moved to an alternative school, you can lodge an objection between 2 November and 1 December. Parents in that position are the only ones who can object. If the objection fails, you can appeal until 15 December. In earlier cycles, the department allowed itself 14 days to answer an objection and 21 days to decide an appeal, and the appeal outcome was final. If you plan to object, check on gdeadmissions.gov.za what that does to the offer you hold before your seven days run out.
The department processes applications that were missing proof of address between 23 November and 4 December. Late applications open on 4 December and close on 31 January 2027, and they can only go to schools with space left. Last year, parents could not decline or appeal a place offered in the late window.
How Long Can Placement Take?
The 2026 intake is a fair guide. On 13 January 2026, the day before schools reopened, 4,858 Gauteng children were still waiting for a place, and 3,477 of them were going into Grade 8. Daily Maverick reported that most offers that cycle reached parents in December.
Grade 8 carries more of the pressure because there are fewer high schools to go round. Gauteng runs 1,417 public primary schools and 694 secondary schools, so Grade 8 applicants compete for places at half as many schools.
Is the School You Were Offered Worth a Visit?
Go and see it before you object. Ask how big the Grade 8 classes are and which subjects the school offers from Grade 10, because the subjects your child chooses then decide which degrees stay open. Make the trip at 07:00 on a weekday. A school 20 minutes further away in each direction adds more than three hours of travel to your child’s week. Ask whether it runs aftercare, if you need it.
Some offers look better in person than they did in the SMS. Others confirm what you feared, and that is when you need a second option.
Where Does Online School Fit?
Some parents use these weeks to look past the catchment map. Enrolling at an online school doesn’t depend on your address or on which school has a spare desk.
CambriLearn is an accredited online private school that has taught more than 80,000 students since 2008. A Grade 8 child can follow CAPS in English, KABV in Afrikaans, the International British Curriculum or the US curriculum, with live, timetabled lessons from qualified subject teachers who also mark the work. CambriLearn is accredited by Cognia and Pearson Edexcel, registered with SACAI and the IEB, and NCAA approved. Its online high school in South Africa runs from Grade 8 to matric, and Grade 1 children can start in its online primary school.
The route stays open at Grade 10 as well. A child who does Grades 8 and 9 on CAPS can carry on to matric on CAPS, move to CambriLearn’s IEB pathway, which asks for a Grade 9 aggregate of at least 70%, or start International GCSEs, all without changing schools.
Families can enrol in any month from Grade R to Grade 9. On Hellopeter, where CambriLearn ranks first in the Schools category, parents describe mid-year enrolments finished within days. Across Google, Hellopeter, Reviews.io and Facebook, families rate the school 4.8 out of 5 from 391 reviews, checked on 29 October 2026.
What Does Online School Ask of a Family?
In South Africa, a child who learns from home is registered with the provincial education department for home education. CambriLearn’s guide to homeschooling in South Africa sets out the steps under the BELA Act.
You’ll need a reliable laptop, a stable connection and an adult who checks in during the day. A 13-year-old can run most of their own timetable, while a six-year-old needs someone nearby. Parents follow attendance, marks and progress in CambriCommand, the school’s parent view, and since October they can ask Claude about their child’s week in plain words.
CambriLearn publishes its fees per subject per year. Registration, textbooks and external exam fees sit outside tuition, so add them in when you compare the cost with a public school’s fees, transport and uniform.
Grade 8 is also the year friendships reshuffle. CambriCommunity comes with every CambriLearn enrolment and runs clubs, study groups and meetups, so your child has people to talk to outside lessons.
What Should I Do Before 13 January?
- Respond to every offer within seven days, even while you wait for a school on your list.
- Lodge an objection by 1 December if your child was moved to a school you didn’t apply to.
- Speak to an online school before the December holidays, so a failed appeal doesn’t leave you without a plan.
- Settle on a school before public schools open for 2027 on 13 January.
If the place you’ve been offered isn’t right for your child, book a free consultation with CambriLearn and compare it with an accredited school your child can start from home.
