Acne myths busted with Lamelle Research Laboratories


Despite being one of the most common inflammatory skin conditions in the world, acne is still very misunderstood. So much so, that myths still abound. Fortunately, at Lamelle Research Laboratories, we’re acne experts that can help you sort the facts from the fiction. Myth 1: Only teenagers get acne Nope, not true! It would be great if acne was a problem you could simply outgrow, but this isn’t the case for everyone. Four main triggers that contribute to acne – skin that doesn’t naturally exfoliate the way it should, leading to a build-up of dead skin cells that can clog the pores; an excess of oil that also gets trapped in pores; infection and inflammation. These triggers can affect both adults and teens, but it’s true, teens are often most affected. This is due to their body’s creating more androgens during puberty, a hormone that can increase the production of oil. How to beat winter dryness with Lamelle

A nice glass of red by the fire. Snuggling in bed with a book. There’s lots to love about winter. Alas, as the temperatures drop, so does the humidity level. Then, the dry, winter air tries to even the status quo by drawing moisture from whatever it can, including you! This why your skin feels so much drier in winter. It’s definitely not all in your head. It’s just science. To make things worse, many of us tend to take longer, much hotter showers or baths during the chillier months. Makeup for teens

If you are a teen or have a teen, the chances are that they are ready to start experimenting with makeup. They are now at the age where they want to start taking care of their appearance & highlight certain features. It’s always so difficult deciding what is appropriate without being over the top. Here are some makeup ideas that will be suitable for a teen where simplicity is key: Focus on the complexion and skin health first. It is never too early to start or have a skin care regime. Make sure your teen is cleansing and moisturizing their skin. A nice gentle face wash and makeup remover should be used to remove all traces of makeup so that pores do not get clogged as clogged pores can cause blackheads and breakouts. Teach your kids from a young age about using an SPF. This is the best thing they can do for their skin. Teens are always going to the beach or hanging by the pool therefore an SPF will protect against the harmful UV rays which will cause pigmentation & premature wrinkles later in life.  Prep your skin. Using a primer will not only even out your skin and make for a smooth surface for your BB Cream or Foundation, but also act as a barrier between your skin and the BB Cream or Foundation and prevent your pores from becoming clogged. Try using the essence prime plus studio protecting +skin perfecting primer which contains an SPF of 20 for added benefit. Finding the perfect base. When it comes to foundation for teen skin, I find that it is not necessary and that a BB cream works just as well. If your teen is looking to cover acne, then rather spot conceal with a concealer and then use the BB Cream all over the face. The goal is to look as natural as possible. Try the CATRICE Clean ID BB Cream. If your teen has a pimple that is red, try covering it with green concealer first which helps to neutralize redness, then spot concealer with your normal concealer.  Try using the CATRICE Colour Correcting Concealer. When it comes to concealer, your concealer should always be a shade lighter than your natural skin tone so that it highlights the under eye. Apply the concealer in inverted triangles under the eye area and blend in well. Try the essence camouflage healthy glow concealer. For brows, you want to keep them full and natural just tamed and neat, so my suggestion is to use a tinted brow gel to comb them in place. Try using the essence make me brow. Choose a colour closest to your natural hair colour. When it comes to eyeshadow, shimmers are great because they are transparent, but earth-tone shadows can work well too. Try the essence brown palette. Apply 2 coats of mascara, using a mascara wand in between each coat to prevent clumping. Use the essence lash princess mascara which is a cult favourite amongst makeup artists. A touch of blush. For blush colour choose a colour you get when you pinch your cheeks. That will be the correct shade for you. essence has a variety of blushes to choose from. A favourite of mine is the essence matt blush.  Sheer lipstick or lip gloss, and that is really it. Try any of the essence ultra last lipsticks or shine shine shine lip-glosses. These will work perfectly to finish off the look.  Your teen will want to experiment with makeup as part of growing up. Help by suggesting the right product and age-appropriate makeup tips. Mothers have a great responsibility here to teach their daughters about makeup. Everything you need to know about micro-needling

Micro-needling is a multi-purpose, minimally-invasive treatment that tackles everything from acne scars, to wrinkles, to stretch marks. It was first practiced in the late 1990s, but it is only recently that is has become widely accessible and popular.  What is micro-needling? Micro-needling is the insertion of micro-fine needles into the skin. The needles enter the skin at surface-level depth, puncturing the skin to stimulate the body’s collagen production. Collagen is an essential protein that helps keep our skin looking youthful, firm and smooth. Our bodies produce collagen naturally, but as we age, our production of collagen decreases and this contributes to the formation of fine lines and wrinkles.  The tiny punctures created by micro-needling are experienced as “injuries” by the body, and these injuries prompt the body to ramp up its collagen production in order to heal the skin. The body produces and sends healing agents collagen and elastin to the skin to facilitate the healing process. The healing process that takes place does not just involve the healing of the needle prick sites; the collagen and elastin also get to work helping the skin recover from a variety of other concerns.   Micro-needling has shown incredible results in reducing wrinkles and fine lines, acne and acne scars, pigmentation, stretch marks, rosacea and uneven skin texture. How to find your perfect foundation shade

When it comes to foundation, you shouldn’t be able to see it sitting on your skin, the foundation shade should blend in with your skin tone. Finding your foundation shade can be a very daunting task. Nobody wants to choose the incorrect shade and end up looking like a masked ghost in pictures. The worst is when you apply your foundation in the morning and get a glimpse of your reflection in the review mirror whilst driving to work and get the fright of life. You end up feeling self-conscious the entire day.  Here are few a tips on how to find your perfect foundation match: Find your undertone! You obviously know which skin tone category you fall into. Light, medium or dark. Finding your undertone is little trickier. Cool – Silver jewellery looks best on you. Your veins appear blue and purple. Your skin has pink, red or blue tones. Neutral – Both silver and gold jewellery suits you. Your veins appear green and blue. Neutral, a mixture of these warm and cool undertones. Warm – Gold jewellery looks best on you. Your veins appear green. Your skin has peachy, yellow, or golden tones. Once you know your skin tone category and your undertone, you need to choose a foundation with the same undertone as you. Testing You can swatch a foundation on your hand or arm to find the closest match to your skin tone, but to find your ideal match you need to rather test along the jawline and match to your décolletage area. Your complexion on your hand/arm/neck area is not always the same as your face. It is also recommended to let the foundation sit on your skin a little while to see if oxidizes. What does “clean beauty” really mean?

The words “clean beauty” and “green beauty” are sometimes used as a marketing strategy without the proper information or certification to back these claims up. Products under these categories are also known as “organic” and “natural” and aim to provide a better experience for the customer and environment.  In order to choose products that are truly green and clean, avoid anything containing microplastics – these are found in polyethylene, polypropylene, polyethylene terephthalate, and polymethyl methacrylate. These ingredients, when rinsed off, run into the ocean, are digested by fish and accumulate. This means that when humans eat certain fish, they are essentially digesting the plastic themselves.  How to choose a product that embodies your values: Check the packaging. Is it recyclable, biodegradable or plastic-free?  Is the product vegan or cruelty-free, containing no animal products and not tested on animals? Check the label. Look for precise descriptions such as “organic” or “free-from”. Do your research. How to combat hair loss and increase hair growth

Many of us get startled by the amount of hair in our hairbrushes, but in reality, most of us have absolutely nothing to worry about. The average person loses about 100 hairs per day. These hairs grow back, and with constant hair loss and regrowth, daily shedding isn’t noticeable at all.  However, when these hairs do not grow back, or when a person experiences shedding that far exceeds 100 hairs per day, they are believed to be experiencing hair loss.  Earlier this year, John Hopkins Medicine reported that almost half of African women experience hair loss at some point in their lives. This is a staggering statistic, which has led to a lot of research and investigation as to why hair loss is so prevalent.  There are various reasons as to why you may suffer from hair loss, and some are more complicated to treat than others.  Genetics Certain types of hair loss is genetic, and unfortunately there is very little (or nothing) that can be done about it. This is commonly known as alopecia areata and female pattern hair loss. Lifestyle Did you know that stress and an unhealthy diet can lead to hair loss? Many women report experiencing hair loss during severely stressful periods of their lives. Luckily, in most cases, hair grows back after the stressful period ends. Many illnesses and medical conditions can also lead to hair loss. Tension hairstyles Have you heard of the term ‘traction alopecia’? Traction alopecia refers to a type of hair loss that occurs when the hair is repeatedly pulled at. This can result from high-tension hairstyles such as braids and dreadlocks, and is also prevalent among women who use chemicals to treat or straighten their hair.  The South African Hair Foundation explains: Traction alopecia is hair loss caused by tight braiding or pulling on the hair, and is temporary if the traction is short term but becomes permanent with prolonged trauma. Usually the situation that we see is a bald area at the very front of the hairline, and this is commonly seen in African woman where the hair has been tightly braided. (https://www.sahairfoundation.co.za/woman_hairloss.htm)  The chronic pulling of the hair associated with high tension hairstyles may cause too much tension and traction on the hair follicles, which may cause them to permanently dislodge from the scalp. While there are some instances in which medical intervention may be necessary, there are many things that can be done to avoid hair loss from happening, and to help hair grow back. Lead a healthy lifestyle A healthy lifestyle is essential for a healthy body that functions optimally. Low levels of iron and vitamin D may contribute to hair loss, so it’s important to maintain sufficient levels of those nutrients, even if by means of supplementation. Eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables and avoid processed foods as much as possible.  Reconsider your hairstyle If you wear your hair in a high tension style, it might be time to reconsider. Ask your hairstylist to create looser braids or dreads to prevent traction alopecia, and try to remove your braids every couple of months and alternate them with other styles. Minimise heat styling and if you want to relax your hair, make sure that this treatment is done by a professional.
