Toys R Us Launches a New Sensory Library with The LEARN Project

Tongaat School for Learners with Special Educational Needs (LSEN) Officially Opens Sensory Library   Toys R Us has once again partnered with The LEARN Project this time to launch a new sensory library at a school in Tongaat in KwaZulu-Natal. The sensory library has officially opened to the community of Tongaat which holds over a thousand books, educational resources and provides an interactive library experience with the aim of awakening the imagination and bringing stories to life to the children who visit. The LEARN Project is a South African non-profit trust with a vision of putting a book into the hands of every learner in South Africa to foster a love of reading and learning today, so that they may reach their full potential tomorrow. The project aims to equip schools with reading books and to create sustainable libraries and classroom book corners. To date, LEARN has donated almost 81 thousand books, established 23 school libraries, and placed over 339 book corners in schools and organisations. “The Tongaat School for Learners with Special Educational Needs sensory library is an interactive room filled with wonder, joy and knowledge with the purpose of encouraging learning through experience with the power of books,” says Roslynne Toerien, Co-Founder of The LEARN Project. “The wide variety of books contained in the new library include, touch and feel tactile books, auditory, light, sound, pop-up and number books and interactive story boxes with visual story aids that bring stories to life.” In addition, she adds that the library also includes safe and comfortable spaces for learners to relax and read a book with cushions, weighted blankets, and textured rugs. “Also contained in the library are sensory trays with textured toys and additional educational resources,” she says. “We ultimately wanted to create a learning experience never to be forgotten, one that awakens the imagination and brings stories to life.” According to Catherine Jacoby, Marketing Manager at Toys R Us, “As an organisation we are humbled to have worked with The LEARN Project for several years, this is our second library we have created with the team and are fortunate to be able to empower and provide relevant resources to young children in South Africa as we raise leaders of future generations.” “The power of play is a strong value at Toys R Us, and we believe that reading is a big part of this, children learn in different ways, this can be through using their imagination to bring a book to life or through touch, sound, visual engagement or play.” She explains that the sensory library embraces different ways of learning and encourages children to grow in a safe and happy space that has been specifically designed for their needs. “As a brand we believe that every child has the right to learn and develop through play, sensory experiences are interactive and this space embraces children’s differences and provides an appropriate place for learning for children with special needs.” “We want to thank everyone who purchased a Jolly colouring-in book from our stores during last month’s literacy month at each of our 50 stores nationwide, R5 of each book sold was donated towards this project and ensured that it came to life,” Jacoby says. “Literacy is a human right and the foundation of all learning, and we look forward to continuing to make even just a small difference to The LEARN Projects goals.”

November or Movember is traditionally when men around the world grow a moustache to raise awareness and funds for men’s health – specifically prostate cancer. And, although the campaign is synonymous with prostate cancer, it’s also about testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention. The clinical team at Bonitas Medical Fund take us through some of the essential health checks and screenings for men. These are tests to check for diseases and health conditions, even before you have any symptoms. By detecting diseases early, they are often easier to treat.  Prostate cancer Prostate cancer is one of the most common types of cancer in men. It occurs in the small walnut-shaped gland that produces the seminal fluid that nourishes and transports sperm.  The growth is normally slow, and it is the one type of cancer from which you have the best chances of recovery. However, while some types of prostate cancer grow slowly and may need minimal or even no treatment, other types are aggressive and can spread quickly. Most men with prostate cancer are older than 65 years and, with the correct treatment, have good outcomes. Men from the age of 50 (40 – 45 for those at high risk, with a family history of prostate cancer) should have an annual prostate examination.  Checking for prostate cancer? Your doctor will recommend a blood test to check the levels of Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) in your blood. PSA can be elevated in men who have prostate cancer. This must be supported by a rectal examination. For 2024, Bonitas has introduced the Be Better Benefit, paid from risk for a range of screening tests and benefits to allow for early detection. This includes an annual PSA screening test on all plans except BonCap. Testicular Cancer Testicular cancer is relatively rare and typically affects young and middle-aged men. Here are some key points about testicular cancer: Regular self-examination of the testicles is essential. This involves gently feeling the testicles for any lumps, changes in size or unusual sensations. If any abnormalities are detected, it’s important to seek medical attention promptly.  Common symptoms include a painless lump or swelling in the testicles, a feeling of heaviness in the scrotum and discomfort or pain. The main treatment is surgery to remove the affected testicle. Depending on the type and stage of cancer, additional treatments such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy may be necessary. The prognosis for testicular cancer is generally quite good, especially when detected early While the exact causes of testicular cancer are not well-understood, certain risk factors include a family history of the disease, undescended testicles and a personal history of testicular cancer Mental Health in men Mental health is of critical concern in South Africa, and it affects both men and women. Men, however, may face specific challenges and stigmas related to mental health. The clinical team at Bonitas stress that, ‘Mental illness is not a character defect, it is a health problem just like arthritis, diabetes or cancer. Fear and misunderstanding often lead to prejudice against people with mental illness and addiction which is a serious barrier to diagnosis and treatment.’ The economic uncertainty, political instability and poor socio-economic conditions in SA have also added to the burden of mental health issues. ‘We have seen a 25% increase in the number of mental health hospital admissions, indicating a need for additional support,’ says Lee Callakoppen, Principal Officer of Bonitas. ‘This need is particularly high in the 18 to 44 age groups. We have further noted that mental health was a key driver for absenteeism in corporate groups.’ Anxiety disorders and depression are the most common mental health problems but others include eating disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), bipolar mood disorder as well as psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia and personality disorders. Substance abuse, such as drugs and alcohol, is also classified under mental illness. Here are some important points regarding mental health: South African men, like men in other parts of the world, may face societal pressures to conform to traditional notions of masculinity, which can make it difficult to express emotions or seek help for mental health issues. Mental health conditions may be underreported and untreated due to the stigma associated with them. Access to mental healthcare services can be limited in certain areas of South Africa, particularly in rural regions. This can create barriers to seeking help for mental health issues Substance abuse issues are often intertwined with mental health problems. Turning to alcohol or drugs will just exacerbate mental health challenges. In response to what is rapidly becoming a mental health crisis, medical schemes are stepping up. How to Work Together as a Breastfeeding Team

 As the saying goes, bringing up a baby takes a village, and although there’s only one pair of boobs that can feed baby, there are lots of ways others can chip in and help. Dads, partners, friends, siblings, and other family members can all form a breastfeeding team. When mums feel supported and happy, they’re likely to breastfeed for longer. What Partners Can Do to Help Dads and partners are key members of any breastfeeding team. They’re the ones who are there with mum and baby in the middle of the night, when times get tough, and reassurance is needed most. With the right support, mums have the time, energy, and peace of mind to get breastfeeding off to the best possible start. Do your research Begin to research breastfeeding before the baby arrives, and make sure you talk to mum about her feeding plans. Let her know that you understand the difficulties that may crop up, and that you’re there for her whatever happens. Lactation consultants – you can find one closest to you  right here at http://salactationconsultants.co.za/wp/find-a-consultant/, and organisations like La Leche League have loads of great information about breastfeeding and also run support groups to help parents find their feet. Offer encouragement Be a breastfeeding cheerleader and offer verbal encouragement and support throughout. This will let mum know that you see and appreciate what a great job she’s doing, and will spur her on to persevere if times get tough. Be sensitive to your partner’s needs It’s important to understand the bond between mum and baby, and to be aware of the rollercoaster of emotions that post-pregnancy hormones can bring. Talk to each other honestly about how you’re both feeling, and encourage openness at every new stage that raising a baby brings. Help around the house To reduce stress and ease the load, make it your job to keep on top of the housework. Encourage mum to put her feet up and enjoy bonding with the little one while you pop to the shops, do the laundry, or rustle up something tasty in the kitchen. Burp the baby Once the baby has finished feeding with mum, you can take on the task of winding them. Remember to have a muslin cloth close by – just in case! If you have older children, perhaps you take them out for the afternoon? Make sure your house isn’t always filled with visitors, and ask people to call or text to arrange a convenient visiting time. When people do come to visit, look for signs that mum – or baby – is ready for them to leave. Keep her company Breastfeeding can be a lonely time for some mums, so try asking if they’d like some time alone with the baby, or if they want you to stick around and chat. Care for the baby in other ways Caring for your baby during the breastfeeding process teaches them that love comes from interacting with people, as well as from food. You can pitch in with walks, nappy changes and bath or bedtimes – all of which are great opportunities to build a lasting bond, and give mum some time off to enjoy a soak in the bath or a well-deserved snooze! FIVE COMMON REASONS FOR A HYSTERECTOMY

Affinity Health, a leading provider of high-quality health cover, presents a comprehensive overview of hysterectomies, highlighting the five most common reasons for this surgical procedure. “A hysterectomy is a common surgical procedure performed worldwide, with approximately one in five women undergoing this surgery by age 55 and one in five by 60,” says Murray Hewlett, CEO of Affinity Health. “It’s worth noting that advancements in surgical techniques, anaesthesia, and post-operative care have greatly enhanced the safety of hysterectomies over time. Minimally invasive approaches, such as laparoscopic or robotic-assisted procedures, have further minimised the risks associated with traditional open surgeries.” What Is a Hysterectomy?  A hysterectomy is a surgical surgery that removes a woman’s uterus. It may also include the removal of the cervix, ovaries, fallopian tubes, and other nearby tissues, depending on the circumstances. You will not be able to get pregnant or menstruate after a hysterectomy. This procedure can be performed via different methods, such as abdominal, vaginal, or laparoscopic approaches, and it may be partial or total, depending on the extent of organ removal. Hysterectomy Procedures Hysterectomies are classified into numerous categories. Your doctor will discuss each procedure’s risks, advantages, and potential side effects with you. Total hysterectomy(the most common type) involves the removal of the entire uterus as well as the cervix. Partial hysterectomy(also known as supracervical hysterectomy) removes only the uterus, leaving the cervix alone (research into the risks and benefits of leaving the cervix intact is underway). A radical hysterectomyis a surgical procedure that removes the uterus, cervix, and upper section of the vagina (typically for cancer therapy). Medical Conditions Leading to Hysterectomy Several medical conditions may warrant a hysterectomy as a treatment option. The five most common reasons include: Uterine Fibroids Uterine fibroids are harmless growths that develop in the uterus. They can vary in size and number, and while some women may have no symptoms, others may experience heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain, pressure on the bladder or bowel, and even fertility problems. A hysterectomy may be recommended when fibroids become large, multiply, or cause significant discomfort and disruption in daily life. Endometriosis Endometriosis is a disorder in which tissue that usually lines the uterus begins to grow outside of it, most commonly on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, or other pelvic organs. Chronic pelvic pain, painful periods, painful intercourse, and infertility can all arise from this. While various treatments, such as medications and surgeries, exist to manage endometriosis, a hysterectomy may be considered when conservative approaches have been exhausted, and the symptoms severely impact a woman’s quality of life. Adenomyosis Adenomyosis occurs when the tissue lining the uterus, called the endometrium, grows into the muscular wall of the uterus. This condition can lead to heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding, severe cramping, and an enlarged uterus. Women with adenomyosis often experience significant pain during their menstrual cycles. When symptoms are severe, impacting daily activities, and other treatment options have been unsuccessful, a hysterectomy may be suggested to relieve pain and improve quality of life. Uterine Prolapse Uterine prolapse happens when the muscles and ligaments supporting the uterus weaken, causing the uterus to descend into or protrude from the vagina. This condition is more common in women who have given birth, especially multiple times or have gone through menopause. Symptoms may include a sensation of pressure or heaviness in the pelvis, urinary incontinence, difficulties with bowel movements, and discomfort during sexual intercourse. When uterine prolapse becomes severe and significantly affects a woman’s daily activities, a hysterectomy may be recommended to address the condition. Gynecologic Cancer Hysterectomy is a crucial treatment option for various gynecologic cancers, including uterine, cervical, and ovarian. In these circumstances, the operation seeks to remove the malignant tissue while preventing it from spreading further. The extent of organ removal may vary depending on the stage and type of cancer. A hysterectomy is often combined with other treatments, such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy, to provide the best chance of successful cancer management and long-term survival. Recovery Process Recovery following a hysterectomy varies from woman to woman and depends on the surgical approach and overall health. Generally, women can expect some post-operative discomfort, fatigue, and vaginal bleeding or discharge. Pain management, rest, and proper wound care are essential during recovery. The healthcare provider will provide guidelines regarding activity restrictions, resuming everyday daily routines, and follow-up appointments.

Active children sleep better

Exercise is one of the best science-backed ways to improve your sleep and health In our home, generally around 18h00 in the evening, when we’ve had dinner and there’s still some play time ahead of bath, all my son wants to do is move! There’s running and playing tag, kicking a ball in the garden, riding his bike in the road or doing exercises with dad in his gym garage. Of course, I am all for it, as I am well aware of how important it is to include exercise into our daily lives. In many homes most children tend to spend hours every day in front of a screen (TV’s, smartphones or tablets) looking at a variety of media, whether it be games or YouTube videos or cartoons. Too much screen time and not enough physical activity add to the problem of childhood obesity. Obesity is a fast-growing disease in South Africa, with one in eight children now living with obesity. Parents should try to limit screen time for children. Screen times for children from 2 – 5 years old shouldn’t exceed 1 hour a day and if they’re younger than 18 months it shouldn’t be encouraged at all. The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends zero screen time for children under the age of 2 years old. An odd video-chat with family would be suitable but not right before bedtime. (That’s of course one of the positives of technology). Children that have regular exercise, even if it means being active through play will grow, have stronger muscles and bones, develop important motor skills, have leaner bodies that result in a lower chance of getting type 2 diabetes and lower blood pressure. Besides enjoying the health benefits of regular exercise, fit children also sleep better. In a New Zealand study, researchers looked at how much time it took for inactive children to fall asleep versus active children. What they found was that it took children three more minutes to fall asleep for every hour that child was inactive or only sitting. That means that a child who plays video games or watches TV all day will take more time to fall asleep, and have poorer quality sleep than a child who actively plays during the day.  In another study they also found that active babies sleep better than less active babies. Those infants who were active during the day woke up less at night, so they tended to sleep better – although they did move about in their sleep more. This suggests that encouraging activity could have a knock-on effect on improving other behaviours like good sleep practices. It doesn’t have to be planned or scheduled, but something parents can take away from this is that your child always keeps an eye on how you spend your time, so set a good example by exercising regularly. Myth: Drowning children will shout for help Drowning children are physiologically unable to call out. The respiratory system is designed for breathing – speech is the secondary function. Drowning children’s mouths alternately sink below and reappear above the surface but while their mouth is above the surface, they need to exhale and inhale before they sink again. There is not enough time to cry out.  Myth: Drowning children are unsupervised children 50% of all child drownings will occur 25 metres or less from an adult who was distracted for only a few seconds.  Myth: Drowning children wave their arms to attract attention or will thrash in the water Drowning children cannot wave for help. Physiologically, a person who is drowning cannot perform voluntary movements such as waving or moving towards a rescuer. Envisage the surface of the water as a platform. Someone who is drowning often presses down on the surface and tries to use it as leverage to get their mouth above the water’s surface to breathe. So what the onlooker sees are arm movements that can appear to be playful swimming. Children will not kick wildly either. They remain upright in the water with no evidence of a supporting kick. They are quiet, focused only on breathing and show no signs of violent struggle. The child’s struggle is quick — 20 seconds, whereas an adult struggles for 60 seconds. Myth: My child has had swimming lessons so he / she won’t drown No child is ever drown-proof, no matter how good their swimming skills. A few swimming lessons are no guarantee when it comes to drowning prevention.  Myth: Water wings and flotation aids will prevent drowning Water wings give a dangerous and false sense of security, often making children think they are stronger swimmers than they actually are. Why Doesn’t Sleep Training Work?

Working in the baby/parenting industry I know that there are many topics that can cause a big debate.  Topics that can get parents talking, engaging and give passionate opinions on.  In the sleep space this is no different and even just the words ‘sleep training’ might send a shiver down most parent’s spine.  Even I don’t love the words “sleep training”… not because I have strong opinions on it but rather because I know other parents do.  I always find myself clarifying the words, explaining what I mean when I say it. What do I mean when I say sleep training?  For me sleep training means the methods we use to create sustainable sleep associations.  Yes, it sounds complicated but in reality it should. I purposefully chose the wording!  I know the power that goes with it.  I know how irresponsible people can go about sleep training!  I know that not doing it correctly, can do more harm than good!  I know that just doing sleep training will not work!  I know doing sleep training wrong will not work! YES, I said it – sleep training does NOT work!  Many times I have consulted with parents who have attempted a form of sleep training by themselves and it did not go well! Even long hours of crying didn’t help at all and resulted in a traumatised baby and parents. This has nothing to do with the parent’s consistency, nothing to do with their determination or even their beliefs.  They did it and it did NOT work.  Why doesn’t sleep training work if attempted without professional help? Even though sleep is natural, it is complex AND parents time and time again underestimate this.  Sleep training (or rather creating sustainable sleep associations) is only one part of sleeping well.  This is the part that many parents have passionate opinions on because it is often one of the more difficult steps of teaching good sleep habits  BUT it does not make it more important.  The fact is that too many parents attempt sleep training without understanding how to do it responsibly.  Too many parents attempt sleep training without any of the other building blocks of sleep in place.  Too many parents attempt sleep training in an irresponsible way, which can cause a lot more unnecessary crying and ultimately more sleep issues. Sleep training without a proper daily routine and schedule in place will not work.  Sleep training after giving your child a litre of coca cola will just cause hours and hours of crying.  Sleep training with a bedtime routine that is too late will cause you baby to wake up soon after falling asleep.  Sleep training with all the lights on will not only prolong the process but also create multiple wake ups. Sleep training does NOT work… in isolation.  It should never be attempted without first considering the other building blocks of good quality sleep, that would be irresponsible.  You can only create sustainable sleep associations once all the other building blocks of sleep are in place.  Just because the other building blocks are easier to achieve, does not make them less important.  In fact, getting the other building blocks in place can go a long way in bettering your baby’s sleep without even needing to do sleep training!  By Jolandi Becker – MD of Good Night

Does your child have Visual Perception challenges?

Visual perception is a fundamental aspect of human experience. It is the brain’s ability to make sense of what the eyes see. It allows us the ability to interpret, filter, organise and make sense of the world around us, from recognising faces, to reading words, to judging distances and perceiving colours. During development, good visual perceptual skills are important and make up part of the foundation of learning. Difficulty with visual perceptual skills can lead to problems with learning. In this article we explore what visual perception is, the various aspects of it and highlight some key red flags that parents should be aware of.  Visual perception can be divided into the following complex processes: Visual Memory – Record and store information to be recalled and accessed later. Red flags that indicate challenges with Visual Memory include: Recalling site words Spelling – especially remembering how words are spelled Reading fluidly – each word read seems brand new Writing – recalling letter formation Drawing – remembering what an item is supposed to look like from past experiences Math skills – remembering how the problem is supposed to look, graphing, or using a calculator Completing life skills such as following a recipe, reading a map, shopping, using the internet, and typing Visual Sequential Memory – Similar to visual memory but helps us remember and recognise people, places we have been, and a series of events, equations, and procedures. This helps us to work through, plan and prepare for our days, and to access necessary stored information for engagement with all our daily tasks. Red flags that indicate challenges with Visual Sequential Memory are the same as for Visual memory. Form Constancy – Distinguish one shape from another which is similar. This can include difference in size, colour, or shape. For example, the difference between b and d. Red flags that indicate challenges with Form Constancy include: Difficulty completing worksheets/puzzles, and sorting items that are slightly different Slow or delayed learning to read, especially with different fonts, or writing styles Unable to effectively read other people’s handwriting Figure Ground – Filter, sort and extract the most important information from a busy background, which is important when organising your environment, including your room, your workspace, your work book etc.  Red flags that indicate challenges with Figure Ground include: Difficulty locating objects in competing environments such as a drawer, folder, or crowd Loses their place when reading, copying from the board, or writing from a model Struggles to find personal items in a crowded space Slow to complete work Unable to effectively sort items from a large pile Spatial Relations – Process and organise visual information from our environment and decipher where it is in relation to ourselves. Spatial relations include laterality and directionality. Laterality is the ability to distinguish between left and right on oneself.  Directionality is telling the difference between right and left on objects or someone else. Red flags that indicate challenges with Spatial Relations include: Knowing their left and right Reading similar letters such as b/d p/q without errors Forming letters/numbers correctly Following directions involving space, such as “go right” Moving around their environment without bumping into objects Learning social skills involving body language and spatial distance from others Copying written work, staying inside the lines, or writing within certain confines Completing puzzles – knowing which way to place a piece Visual Closure – Detect, differentiate, select, draw conclusions, and understand information when we are only given certain pieces of information, rather than the entire account, story or explanation. Red flags that indicate challenges with Visual Closure include: Difficulty completing puzzles Challenges with dot-to-dot activities Refusal to engage in tasks such as puzzles, dot-to-dot and colouring activities Slow reading fluency Visual Discrimination – Identify detail, determine similarities and differences in shape, colour, position, and orientation. The other six skills require some level of visual discrimination.  Red flags that indicate challenges with Visual Discrimination include: Difficulty sorting similar items such as coins, socks, silverware, especially those with subtle differences Difficulty effectively read maps Challenges with reading words that are similar such as “cat” and “cap” Difficulty completing puzzles or spot the difference pages Visual Motor Integration – Integrate the visual information received in the brain with fine motor skills. It involves interpreting and responding to visual information accurately and effectively, typically using precise motor movements.   Red flags that indicate challenges with Visual Motor Intergation include: Difficulty with fine motor skills  Messy handwriting  Poor hand eye co-ordination  Inaccurate cutting  Avoidance of activities  Difficulty with spatial awareness Visual Attention – Attend to visual information, while filtering out unnecessary details. Red flags that indicate challenges with Visual Attention include: Bumping into things, clumsy movements Not being able to find items Difficulty with reading and writing    What If my child has poor Visual Perception? If your child has poor visual perceptual skills, this can affect their participation in daily tasks and specifically in their school environment with reading, writing, organisation, and other executive functioning skills.  Visual perception plays a crucial role in a child’s development and learning. Whilst some variations in visual development are normal, parents/care givers and teachers/therapists should be attentive to red flags that may indicate potential issues. If you notice any red flags in your child’s visual development, it is essential to consult with an eye care professional such as a Behavioural Optometrist for a comprehensive assessment of the eye and its behavioural response to its environment. An Occupational Therapist, a Remedial Therapist or an Educational Psychologist can carry out the necessary assessments to determine the areas where your child is struggling and is able to provide appropriate assistance where necessary.  Early detection and intervention can make a significant difference in a child’s visual development and overall well-being.  Written by Nicky Forssman – Occupational Therapist Glenoaks School

When to Start Tummy Time

Start slow, mix it up, and more ways to get your baby to love tummy time. Thanks to the “Back to Sleep” campaign, which urges parents to place babies on their back for naps and nighttime, rates of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) have declined significantly. But this practice has also led to an increase in plagiocephaly, when there are flat areas on an baby’s head due to lying on her back for too long. The fix: tummy time, which gives your baby a chance to develop her neck and arm muscles and view the world from a new perspective. “This activity takes pressure off the back of the head and allows babies to look from side to side so they can maintain full range of neck motion,” explains Andy Bernstein, MD, a pediatrician in Evanston, IL. It also lets them work on their arm strength which they’ll need when they’re ready to roll over and crawl. Of course, since she’s not used to this position, your baby may end up red-faced and grunting at first. Here’s how to make tummy time more fun for both of you: Choose the right time for tummy time That usually means she’s in a good mood, has been fed, and is well-rested. Many parents have found their babies to be most receptive after a diaper change, bath or nap. Wait about an hour after the last feeding so she doesn’t spit up from the pressure on her belly. Start slow There’s no need to put babies on their bellies until they can’t stand it anymore, reminds Bernstein. Start slowly by putting her in this position for just a few minutes at 1 or 2 months of age, when babies are beginning to hold their heads up. As your baby’s neck and upper body control improves, gradually increase the amount of time spent on her belly. Make her comfy A baby’s head is larger in proportionate size to her body, so you’ll notice it can be hard to hold her noggin up for very long. Because tummy time can be awkward, you might try adding a bit of padding for her comfort. Alanna Levine, MD, a spokesperson for the American Academy of Pediatrics who practices in New York and New Jersey recommends starting babies in a ‘superman’ position over a pillow. “This helps infants to gradually develop the strength to hold their heads up,” she adds. You can also try a rolled-up baby blanket under your child’s chest, increasing the size of the roll as she grows and gets stronger. This bit of padding also frees up her hands to reach out and hold toys. Keep tummy time fun Make tummy time more enjoyable by having a few playthings on hand. You might also try getting down to your baby’s level so the two of you are eye to eye. “Make it as interactive as you can by showing your baby how it feels to roll over and stretch for nearby toys,” suggests Bernstein. Sing, smile or talk to keep your baby’s attention and place rattles, teethers or a baby-safe mirror within her reach in order to lengthen the play time. And don’t forget to share your tot’s excitement and praise her efforts when she actually grabs hold of a toy. Mix it up Tummy time doesn’t always have to occur on the floor. Change up the scenario by lying on your back and putting your baby tummy-side down on your stomach or chest. Meet her gaze and encourage her to look up. You can also give her neck muscles more of a workout by moving a toy in front of her, starting at eye level and then slowly raising it upward and side to side. “Engage in this activity as much as you can,” says Levine. A couple of sessions every day should do the trick. HOW TO BUILD UP YOUR CHILD’S CONFIDENCE IN MATHS

It’s a common experience… your child sits down to work on Maths homework but very quickly becomes visibly stressed, frustrated, or upset. For many kids, doing Maths can seem like a daunting task, even a scary one. And while many do overcome it, some of us carry this Maths anxiety with us for much of our lives. If you’re looking to help your child reduce their Maths anxiety, we have a few suggestions.  Be Empathetic to Maths Struggles  Empathy can go a long way. Whether it’s because you experienced similar struggles as a child or watched someone else struggle, making your child feel like they’re not alone can help ease their stress. When kids hear that others in their lives faced similar challenges it can help them to feel understood and a little more confident to tackle the task in front of them.   Teach Them to be OK with Making Mistakes  Learning to be OK with making mistakes is distinct from addressing the emotions that bubble up with failure. Once your child is no longer feeling overwhelmed, helping them to feel OK with making mistakes is all about showing them that mistakes are often how learning happens. We often remember our mistakes more clearly than the times we didn’t need to struggle at all. Identifying where we went wrong is one of the best ways to learn how to get to the answer or solution on your own. Understanding the path it took to get something right means committing to memory the path to success.   Tip: Try pointing out something that was previously hard for your child and is now easy because they figured out their mistakes and practiced until they got it. For example, learning to ride a bike, practicing a sport, or an earlier Maths concept.   Explain the Importance of Finding (And Filling) Gaps  Lastly, very often the cause of Maths anxiety is the fact that earlier concepts weren’t mastered. Gaps in foundational knowledge create a shaky foundation for more challenging concepts. Particularly, if children don’t do well in Maths at an early age, it can have a cumulative effect.   At Kumon, we focus on mastery. We start students off at a comfortable starting point, which can sometimes mean starting on material that is below their current grade level. Current struggles might be top of mind for parents and the kids themselves, but often the solution to current struggles is filling in gaps in knowledge of earlier concepts. This anxiety causes their brains to become confused or shut down which then prevents them from thinking logically or rationally and reinforces the experience that “I can’t do Maths!”  So, in conclusion, it is important to notice how your child feels about their Maths work and to identify Maths anxiety as early as possible. Then, if you notice this occurring, take every step possible to address the anxiety and to enable your child to overcome, feel confident and believe in themselves. TEACHING YOUR BABY USEFUL SELF FEEDING TECHNIQUES

How to teach your baby the art of self feeding is actually an incredibly common question amongst parents. One which many do not think of, up until the age where it begins to happen. However, this process is not as difficult as one would think if you have the necessary knowledge to implement effective teaching. This is where this article will help you shine. Teach your child these valuable life skills and help them reach their independence by reading on below now. What Your Child Will Gain From Self Feeding There are multiple benefits to teaching your child this practice. A child that can self feed is  also a blessing in disguise to parents who will be able to enjoy their own meals during dinner time. We will take a look at a few of the key reasons of the importance of self feeding below. Motor Neuron Development By teaching your baby how to hold and operate a spoon, you are actually heling their motor neuron development.  This action develops their motor skills, which are incredibly needed later in their developmental stages. Fine motor skills are small muscle movements within the hands and fingers. By teaching your child to self feed, you are enabling them to develop strength and dexterity within their hands and fingers.  Independence By teaching your child to self feed, you are essentially giving them their first little taste of independence. This is actually incredibly important during the developmental stages. By giving your child a sense of independence, you will be instilling a sense of self assurance within them. Babies begin to develop a sense of self from about eight months onward. During this time, they begin to start seeing themselves as a separate entity, their own little being if you will. By allowing them to feed themselves, you are giving them the ability to establish their own identity through independence of you. A Sense Of Accomplishment One of the best things you can do for your child is celebrate small wins. And by allowing them to blunder through the art of learning to self feed, you will be giving them a sense of accomplishment. Be sure to encourage them during this time and help them along their journey. Teaching Your Baby The Art Of Self Feeding Teaching your baby self feeding techniques is a somewhat lengthily process. This is due to the fact that it needs to go through three key phases before they become truly independent. We will discuss all three of these below. Finger Feeding This is the first stage in the self feeding journey. Finger feeding is an important step to take as not only will it begin your child’s self feeding development, but it will also give them exposure to various textures. By feeling the various textures of food, you will help them develop their sense of touch.  Great foods to start finger feeding with should be soft to the touch, and are not hard in texture. Hard raw veggies and fruits such as carrot and apple are bad ideas for first finger foods. These may get stuck in your babys through, should they bite off too big a piece as such, soft foods such as mashed potatoes or an avocado wedge are real winners.  These softer foods will ensure that your baby will be able to mash up the food easily before swallowing. Furthermore, these will be easier for your little one to grasp. Remember, when finger feeding begins, your baby will first start by grabbing handfuls of everything. Your baby’s grasp will change over time. First they begin to grab with a fist-full, shoving everything into their little mouth. But over a period, they begin to hone the process, until they reach a pincer like grip in which the index finger and thumb are used to pick foods up.  Encourage this grip by holding a piece of food for your baby, and only letting go when they use the above mentioned two fingers. Introducing Feeding Spoons The next step along your self feeding journey will be to teach your baby to eat with a spoon. This process can be incredibly messy, so prepare yourself for a few pumpkin smears here and there! Once your baby is confident in finger feeding, introduce them to their first spoon. Firstly, they should be used to a spoon since you would have been feeding them with one when they began to eat solids. But now, give them their own to hold as you feed them. If they mimic your actions, encourage them to do so. A great technique is the over hand guide. Place your hand over your baby’s and guide it into their bowl of food. Get a taste of food onto the tip of their spoon, and help them guide this into their mouth.  Practice this technique for a while before meals, then leave them to try it on their own. Watch them to ensure their spoon is facing the right way, but allow them the freedom to play with their food. Finally, Introduce The Fork The third step within the self feeding journey is to introduce your child to the fork. Be sure to only introduce them to this utensil once they are completely capable of using a spoon.  Use the same over hand method to help them develop their fork skills. Some children may opt to use finger feeding over forks this is natural as it is easier. Allow them to do this, but keep the fork nearby as an ever present option which you encourage them to use.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM YOUR BREAST CHANGES DURING AND AFTER PREGNANCY

Breast changes within a pregnant woman are truly incredible. The topic of breast development is one which is grossly misunderstood. Most women have an incorrect knowledge of how their own body develops. For most of ladies, it is assumed that by the time they have gone through puberty, that their breasts are fully developed. But this is wildly incorrect. Puberty is actually just the beginning of breast development.  Within this article, we will discuss the actual development cycle of a woman’s breasts and what changes she can prepare herself for both during, and after pregnancy. You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet! How Breasts Develop After Puberty Many people link breast development to size. Simply put, this is the wrong measure to take. Whilst a woman’s breast size will remain relatively the same from puberty up until pregnancy, the real development happens within the tissue itself. Breasts actually continue to develop every time a woman menstruates. When it is that time of the month, a lady’s breasts begin to produce small amounts of secretory tissue. This is the tissue that allows milk production to take place. This cycle will go on until a woman either reaches the age of about 34, or she falls pregnant. Naturally, another question arises in light of this knowledge. If a woman is consistently creating additional tissue, why do the breasts not get bigger as she gets older? Well, the breast actually replace the older cells within them when creating the new ones. As such, the old cells are replaced by the new. This is also why a lady’s breasts become incredibly sensitive during this time.  In a nutshell, the body only begins to develop a woman’s breasts from the end of puberty onwards. But, what happens when you fall pregnant? Breast Development During Pregnancy Pregnancy is truly a miraculous time for a woman. Multiple changes begin to happen within your body. Your hormones sore, your bodily functions begin to change, but above all, a tiny being begins to grow within you.  This period can be seen as your breast development heyday. During this time, your breasts will grow into full maturity. And it all begins after month one of falling pregnant. The first notable thing a woman will experience is the sensitivity of her breasts. This is actually one of the most common first signs of pregnancy. This is caused by the sudden change in hormones within her body. Within the first four to six weeks, the breasts will be particularly sensitive – similar to how they feel during a period. For the first trimester of her pregnancy, a woman’s breasts will remain sensitive. Visible Physical Changes The next change is one you will physically be able to witness. During pregnancy, breasts may go up by a cup size. This change happens particularly in first time mothers. Some ladies even go up by two sizes during this time. You will start to see the beginning of this growth from about six to eight weeks into pregnancy. Breasts may also begin to feel particularly itchy during pregnancy. This is due to the tightness of the skin within the area as the breasts grow. Some women have even developed stretch marks on their breasts during pregnancy from the sudden growth. Areola Changes Another physical indication of breast change during pregnancy are prominent veins. When pregnant, a woman’s breasts may begin to show large, blue veins running through them. This is attributed to the act that the veins will expand to accommodate extra blood flow of the growing breast tissues. Don’t be alarmed if you notice this on yourself – it is completely natural and will fade once you have given birth and stopped breastfeeding. Additional colour changes to expect occur within the areola’s. During pregnancy, it is common for a woman’s areola’s to become slightly larger, and darker in colour. Your areola’s will also develop pronounced bumps, known as Montgomery’s tubercles. These are oil producing glands which are common within pregnancy, and help lubricate the nipples during this time. Tissue Changes  As far as changes are concerned, the first thing which begins to change in the tissue structure are the amount of milk ducts within the breast. The hormones released during pregnancy send messages to the breast structure informing it of the need to increase the number of ducts – as feeding will soon begin. As such, a burst of ducts begins to develop within the breast tissue.  Lactocytes are another tissue addition within the breasts during pregnancy. These are actually the milk production cells. Naturally, the body will need to develop these as they are the power houses behind breastfeeding. Other Changes The next set of changes do not necessarily happen within all women. Firstly, there is the possibility of the breasts leaking. During the third month of pregnancy, a woman’s body begins to produce the liquid substance known as colostrum. This is also known as liquid gold, as it contains nutritional value second to none for babies. However, during the last few months of pregnancy, the breasts may actually leak a tiny bit of colostrum. This happens frequently in some women, may start earlier in others, and may not occur for some moms. If you experience a breast leakage, don’t be ashamed. Invest in a few disposable breast pads and wear these during this time. Another pregnancy change could be that of lumpy breast tissue. Some ladies may develop umps within the breasts during pregnancy. This can commonly be associated to milk-filled cysts beginning to appear. These should subside once the woman begins to pump r breast feed. How to Deal With Breast Changes During Pregnancy Breast changes can be uncomfortable for some women. Even if they are not causing discomfort to you, there is something every pregnant woman needs to invest in; nursing bras. Nursing bras or apparel is a must have for all moms to be. These are designed to optimise comfort both during pregnancy and after. They also allow for easy feeding

GARDENING WITH YOUR CHILDREN

Every weekend one of my favourite activities begin with my children, it is something that we all look forward too each week. Our seeds that we saved from the fruits and veggies have dried out and they are now waiting for us to take them and begin a whole new journey of gardening together. We begin by weeding the flower beds, watering the garden and then planting new seeds, this is all part of our Sunday mornings. Gardening has been a special time amongst South Africans for decades. As a small child I have fond memories of watching my father attend to his gardens each day and so what better family memory to create than creating a beautiful garden with my children. After all, what child does not like being outside, digging in soil, getting dirty, creating things and watching them grow! This weekly activity has also provided a great outlet for communicating in our household and we have strengthened our relationships with each other as a result.  I simply love when my children come running, little pot in hand to show me that their seed, from the previous week, has started to grow. Gardening has mustered great responsibility with my little one’s and this is something that is not taken lightly in our house. Yes, there have been times when they have all learnt about cause and effect, like not watering the seedling resulted in a unhappy plant, but I am happy to report that we have had very few casualties along the way. When we began gardening with our children, I knew that this was the perfect opportunity for me to broaden their knowledge of good food vs bad food. Although I am lucky in that my children don’t have a problem eating their vegetables, this did not stop me from giving a lesson or two on the importance of putting the right food into our bodies. Getting out in the sunshine, digging in the dirt is also a wonderful way to discover and learn about all the creepy crawly’s that lurk beneath the surface and everyone loves to watch their little sister being chased by their latest discovery.  All in all, this is a lovely way for moms and dads to unwind with their kiddies each week and discover new things. Here are a few tips on how to create a garden with your child: Keep it simple. Give your child their own garden space to look after and nurture. It does not need to be a big area at all, a few pots is all that is needed to get them excited. Involve older children on the planning and design of the garden. Tweens love getting involved when you entice their opinion about something. Use light-weight tools and gardening equipment with your children. Grow an interesting assortment of of seeds such as sunflowers, corn, pumpkin, tomatoes. Plant flowers that attract bird life and butterflies into your garden. Incorporate flowers that are bright and sweet in smell. Most importantly, have fun!

Setting boundaries – how to draw the line before it gets blurred

First, we need to look at why we need to set boundaries? Boundaries are the rules you set, about how others are allowed to treat you. The purpose of setting a healthy boundary is to protect and take good care of you, as well as, the relationship with others.   Whether it be in relationships, at work, at home or at school, they are crucially important to your personal well-being, as well as that of others. Why then, are we afraid of setting boundaries if they are there to protect us? Everyone is different Something that affects you might not be a big deal to someone else. This could make you feel like your boundaries are wrong.  Fear of Rejection  You might feel afraid to enforce your boundaries because it might upset someone else  Effort Enforcing boundaries can feel like a lot of work, so you might be tempted to ignore issues in the hopes that they will go away on their own. Start small If you don’t have many boundaries in place already, the prospect of introducing more might seem overwhelming — so build them up slowly. Doing so allows you to take things at a more comfortable pace, and it provides time to reflect on whether it’s heading in the right direction or if you need to make some tweaks. Set them early  It can sometimes be hard to start putting boundaries in, especially in pre-existing relationships. Rather set them straight away. By setting boundaries and expectations from the very beginning, everyone knows where they stand, and feelings of hurt, confusion, and frustration can be lessened. Be consistent Letting boundaries slide can lead to confusion and encourage new expectations and demands among those around you. Try keeping things consistent and steady. This helps to reinforce your original thresholds and beliefs, and it ensures those lines remain clearly established. Create a framework Boundaries may vary, depending on the type of relationship. However, if you find it helpful, there’s no reason not to have a few basics in place that can be adapted accordingly. Feel free to add extras In some aspects of our lives, there may already be boundaries in place, but consider these the minimum. Setting boundaries in certain aspects of your life, may lead to more productivity and feeling empowered. Be aware of social media These platforms allow for more communication than ever, but they’ve also encouraged some considerable boundary blurring. Oversharing can become a concern, especially on public platforms where family and friends may post personal information or photos that we don’t want shared publicly. If you deem a particular action as boundary-crossing in real life, your concerns are no less valid when it occurs digitally. Talk, talk, talk Communication is critical in the world of boundaries, especially if someone consistently oversteps yours. While you might need to raise your concerns, these discussions need not be confrontational. By approaching the situation relevant to the circumstances in context, it may prevent confrontation, resentment or awkward situations before it becomes a concern. Be your biggest champion For boundaries to have a strong foundation, you need to show yourself a bit of love. A lot of it comes down to self-worth and self-value. If this is lacking, you may find it difficult to set and enforce boundaries to protect yourself. Changing your internal dialogue will make you feel more deserving. Gain some perspective  Not having boundaries can be detrimental to our mental health, but going too far and over-thinking them can also impact our emotional well-being. It’s good to have boundaries, but don’t be dictated by them. Sometimes you’ve just got to go with your gut instinct. We can forget that we’re actually quite good at navigating most things and are quite intuitive as human beings. Also, flexibility is not always a bad thing, as long as it justifies a positive outcome.  Recognizing the boundaries of others In addition to setting your own boundaries, it’s important to appreciate those of others, too — even if they’re different from your own. Repeatedly violating boundaries can breed resentment and contempt, and cause people to withdraw. So, take a moment to consider what may be important to the other person. On a final note Don’t feel guilty about setting boundaries. They’re essentially a form of self-care, and we actively look to incorporate other elements of this into our lives daily — from eating a balanced diet to exercising. This should not be different! Movement is a powerful tool for developing the minds and bodies of young children. As a parent, you looked forward to seeing your baby start crawling, you waited to catch their first step on camera and you’re looking forward to cheering them on at school sports events. Reaching these milestones are all indicators that your child is growing and learning. What you might not know, is that movement contributes to more than a child’s physical development. There are many other areas where movement plays an essential role in developing a well-rounded individual. The Mind-Body Connection Children learn through movement. For example, as your little one crawls towards their favourite toy, they’re engaging in active problem solving. They know what they want and they’ve worked out how to get it – without asking you for help.  In a more abstract way, children move their bodies to explore ideas. A little boy running around the garden with his arms outstretched isn’t just mimicking the movements of an airplane; he’s imagining what it’s like to be a pilot. He pictures himself looking down at the earth below and imitates the effect of braking to make a smooth and safe landing. Physical play is how children learn about themselves and the world around them. Giving them the freedom to experiment with movement will stimulate their minds as well as their bodies.  Solid Communication Skills Do you remember playing “Peek-a-boo!” with your baby and how they’d smile and giggle when you took your hands away from your eyes? Unpacking common myths around child drowning

Whether you have a pool or have small children in your family or social circle, everyone needs to learn about pool safety. Being able to identify a drowning in progress and acting fast can make a real difference to the child making a full recovery after a drowning incident.  Most people imagine that picture A is an accurate depiction of a drowning in progress. In reality, B and C are more accurate – mouth at water level, head bobbing, body upright, little to no splashing and sometimes the appearance of doing doggie paddle. Familiarise yourself with these drowning behaviours:  Head low in the water, mouth at water level  Head tilted back with mouth open Trying to roll over onto the back to float Hair falling over the forehead or eyes Body is vertical/ upright  Eyes glassy & empty, unable to focus Eyes open, with fear evident on the face Hyperventilating or gasping Trying to swim in one direction but without progress Common Drowning Myths Myth: Drowning children will shout for help Drowning children are physiologically unable to call out. The respiratory system is designed for breathing – speech is the secondary function. Drowning children’s mouths alternately sink below and reappear above the surface but while their mouth is above the surface, they need to exhale and inhale before they sink again. There is not enough time to cry out.  Myth: Drowning children are unsupervised children 50% of all child drownings will occur 25 metres or less from an adult who was distracted for only a few seconds.  Myth: Drowning children wave their arms to attract attention or will thrash in the water Drowning children cannot wave for help. Physiologically, a person who is drowning cannot perform voluntary movements such as waving or moving towards a rescuer. Envisage the surface of the water as a platform. Someone who is drowning often presses down on the surface and tries to use it as leverage to get their mouth above the water’s surface to breathe. So what the onlooker sees are arm movements that can appear to be playful swimming. Children will not kick wildly either. They remain upright in the water with no evidence of a supporting kick. They are quiet, focused only on breathing and show no signs of violent struggle. The child’s struggle is quick — 20 seconds, whereas an adult struggles for 60 seconds. Myth: My child has had swimming lessons so he / she won’t drown No child is ever drown-proof, no matter how good their swimming skills. A few swimming lessons are no guarantee when it comes to drowning prevention.  Myth: Water wings and flotation aids will prevent drowning Water wings give a dangerous and false sense of security, often making children think they are stronger swimmers than they actually are. Radiologists from the SCP Radiology practice and Dr Lizanne Langenhoven, who specialises in the treatment of breast cancer, talk about the different kinds of screening for breast cancer.  Dr Langenhoven says, ‘When you consider that around 90% of women find their own breast lumps, it is a very important part of the screening process. Although 80 percent of these lumps are not malignant, there are cases where women owe their lives to their own self-examination.’  A guide to self-examination: Lying down or in the shower:  Place your right hand behind your head. Using the pads of the fingers on your left hand, feel for changes in your entire breast in a circular.  Do the same above and below and in your armpit area.  In front of a mirror: Check for any dimpling, puckering or changes in either nipple.  See your doctor or clinic if you have any of these symptoms. Have regular screenings at your doctor or clinic.  The different screenings include: Mammogram: Is breast imaging using low-dose X-rays to form a 2D image. The advantage is it often reveals abnormalities undetected in a clinical breast examination. Four images are taken, two of each breast. The breast is lightly compressed for less than 1 minute during the examination to improve diagnostic accuracy. Tomosynthesis: This is a form of 3D mammography and uses X-rays as well as sophisticated software to create a 3D image of the breast. It is considered better at detecting cancer and reducing false positives in dense breast tissue.  It is invaluable in problem-solving and is used in combination with 2D mammography. Breast Ultrasound: Ultrasound is a supplementary investigation used to further evaluate morphology, blood flow, and consistency of masses and lymph nodes that are abnormal mammography.  It uses no radiation but rather real-time imaging, using sound waves to create an image. It’s a slightly longer process and is also valuable in problem-solving. It is used in combination with a mammogram not in place of it.  MRI: The digital MR image is created using strong magnetic fields and radio waves but no radiation. You will receive an intravenous injection and then lie on your stomach, in an MRI ‘tunnel’ for around 45 minutes.  An MRI for breast screening is usually used for problem-solving, high-risk screening and for women who have breast implants. Biopsy: A breast biopsy may be recommended when a suspicious area is found in your breast, like a breast lump or other signs and symptoms of breast cancer. It is also used to investigate unusual findings on a mammogram, ultrasound, or other breast examination.  Thermography: Thermography is a test that uses an infrared camera to detect heat patterns and blood flow in body tissues. Digital infrared thermal imaging (DTI) is the type of thermography that can be used to show these patterns and flow in the breasts.

Toddler tantrums

We have all seen children having tantrums at some stage. If you have a toddler you sympathise with the parents. If you don’t, you shake your head and quietly think ‘mine would NEVER do that’. Well they will and when you don’t want them to. Temper tantrums are synonymous with the toddler years. The tantrum in the hands of a skilful toddler is an art form which will rival a Broadway show. He takes a quick look around to check that he is not going to get hurt when he lunges to the floor, he checks to see that he has the audience’s full attention. In a split second he starts his act, every detail designed to get the best reaction from his audience. How long the show lasts depends on the audience (you the parent).  The older the child the longer they can perform. Thankfully by age 4 they have found better ways to get what they want. A toddler in full tantrum mode cannot be negotiated with.  So try the following – Divert – This works well with the younger toddler.  Try and divert his attention with something else. Ignore – Stay calm and don’t get stressed.  Don’t argue with him, just go about with what you were doing. This is not easy.  Check that he can’t get hurt and if you have to, leave the room. An Oscar winning performance without audience might just not be worth the effort. Time out – With the volume getting higher and the arms flaying you gently but firmly pick him up and place him in his room. Don’t shout, just calmly but in a firm voice say that this behaviour is unacceptable and he must stay there till he is calmer (a minute for every year of his life).  Now remove yourself from the area. If he comes out and he is calm give him a great big love and all is forgiven. There are a number of reasons your toddler will tantrum. If he is tired, due for a nap or hungry it might not be the best time to take him shopping. If he has been over stimulated and is battling to integrate all that is happening around him, he is more likely to tantrum. These you can deal with if you start to recognise the signs early. He might start to pick his nose, fidget or whine. He might shield his eyes with his hands, yawn or sneeze.  He may demand a bottle and if ignored it won’t be long before he throws himself on the floor for all to admire. Deal with this early to avoid a tantrum. Take him to a quiet place, let him sleep, feed him or just give him time to get away from all the noise and bustle. As he gets older he is more likely to tantrum if he can’t get his own way. You have asked him to stop throwing the ball in the lounge and after asking twice you take the ball away. Major reason to throw a tantrum no matter that you will allow the ball to be played with outside. Tackling tantrums can be tricky but it’s not impossible. Bear in mind that you should rather comfort a sick child than discipline him or if he is frustrated at not being able to build the tower help him with the task. Using the options of divert, ignore and time out you will conquer all other tantrums. Don’t give in or ‘applaud’ in any way. The least attention the performance gets the easier it is to cope with. If you keep giving rave reviews in the form of your own performance to the tantrum, the show will go on.  Just bear in mind that the tantrums do eventually pass.
