Glenoaks Remedial and Special Needs School

Glenoaks Remedial and Special Needs School A look into our Assisted Learning Stream

In the heart of Kensington, lies a hidden gem. This gem is Glenoaks Remedial and Special Needs School.  As a strong establishment of 52 years in remedial and special needs support, Glenoaks offers a unique and comprehensive educational experience for any child who presents with wide-ranging barriers to learning. The school has a specific stream dedicated to learners with special educational needs. This stream is run by a team of dedicated teachers and therapists who are passionate about special needs and strive for each child to reach their true potential. The GOAL (Glenoaks Assisted Learning) Stream caters for learners from the ages of 6 to 14 years, who have special educational needs which inhibit them from learning in the ‘traditional classroom’. Our learners are unique, inspiring and present with a variety of different and individualistic learning styles. Even though they cannot cope with the pace and complexity of an academic curriculum, neither in a mainstream nor in a remedial classroom, they are able to learn within our supported environment – this is because we focus on what our learners CAN do! Each of our learners have differing areas of strengths. Some have promising potential in one or two subject areas but demonstrate functional abilities in other areas and some of them demonstrate strengths with tasks of a practical nature. A placement in the GOAL stream allows for teachers and therapists to work on enhancing the learners’ strengths whilst developing their skills in areas they find difficult without having to abide by a pre-determined curriculum that may not be suitable to their learning style or needs. Our learners all benefit from repetition, positive reinforcement, and reduced time pressure, aiming at developing skills within their levels of ability.  At present we have a Junior, an Intermediate and a Senior GOAL Stream class. These classes are divided according to a child’s age and ability. Our class sizes are between 5 – 7 learners, and the younger classes have a classroom facilitator. This allows for individual attention and support throughout the day.  We also have a multi-disciplinary team consisting of psychologists, occupational, speech and language and remedial therapists, as well as facilitators, all working together to ensure that no stone gets left unturned when it comes to your child’s educational needs. Subjects in the GOAL Stream include life skills, activities of daily living, cooking, supported reading, home management, current events and world knowledge, basic administration skills, computers, drumming, library, sport, social and emotional skills, Occupational Therapy groups, Speech-Language Therapy and communication groups, social skills groups, work experience groups, and arts and crafts. We also work on individualised numeracy and literacy programs with each of our learners. Our classroom themes are all-encompassing themes and many of our activities are ‘out of the box’ to best support learning needs and styles. Older GOAL Stream learners have many opportunities for project-based learning in preparation for in-house work experience. Our core focus for these learners includes developing their life skills, and functional mathematical and literacy skills so that they can be productive and contributing members of society, whether it be within independent or sheltered working environments.   Our school has a warm and nurturing environment. Please spend some time looking at our website, and make an appointment if you wish to come and see our gem of a school! The staff at Glenoaks take inspiration from each child as well as their families, and this poem written by a mom who was asked to describe the experience of raising a child with a disability, has made us look at special needs differently.  It’s like this… Welcome to Holland Written by Emily Perl Kingsley When you’re going to have a baby, it’s like planning a fabulous vacation trip – to Italy. You buy a bunch of guidebooks and make your wonderful plans. The Colosseum, the Michelangelo David, the gondolas in Venice. You may learn some handy phrases in Italian. It’s all very exciting. After months of eager anticipation, the day finally arrives. You pack your bags and off you go. Several hours later, the plane lands. The stewardess comes in and says, “Welcome to Holland.” “Holland?!” you say. “What do you mean, Holland?” I signed up for Italy! I’m supposed to be in Italy. All my life I’ve dreamed of going to Italy. But there’s been a change in the flight plan. They’ve landed in Holland and there you must stay. The important thing is that they haven’t taken you to some horrible, disgusting, filthy place, full of pestilence, famine and disease. It’s just a different place. So you must go out and buy a new guidebook. And you must learn a whole new language. And you will meet a whole new group of people you would never have met. It’s just a different place. It’s slower paced than Italy, less flashy than Italy. But after you’ve been there for a while and you catch your breath, you look around, and you begin to notice that Holland has windmills, Holland has tulips, Holland even has Rembrandts. But everyone you know is busy coming and going from Italy, and they’re all bragging about what a wonderful time they had there. And for the rest of your life you will say, “Yes, that’s where I was supposed to go. That’s what I had planned.” The pain of that will never, ever, go away, because the loss of that dream is a very significant loss. But if you spend your life mourning the fact that you didn’t get to Italy, you may never be free to enjoy the very special, the very lovely things about Holland.

Five ways to help build your child’s communication skills and confidence

We start communicating from the time we’re born, heralding our arrival with a wail – but that’s just the first step in our communication journey, as we learn to engage with our parents, our friends, our teachers, and others.  It’s worth remembering that nurturing effective communication with your children is about so much more than the humdrum of daily routines – it also helps grow their skills, makes them feel safe and secure, and helps them develop strong and intuitive relationships with people outside the family.  With the 2020 LEGO® Play Well Study highlighting that 96% of parents say that play facilitates communication with their child, and 88% of children saying that play helps their parents get to know them better, these five ideas to build communication skills are a great place to start:   Play ‘chatting catch’. Toss a ball or bean bag between you, with the throwing person asking a question while it’s in the air, and the catching person answering the question when they catch it. This will distract your child from the awkwardness or shyness they may be feeling – with the added bonus of boosting their catching and throwing skills! Talk about non-verbal communication, or body language. You could do this in a ‘charades’ format by acting an emotion and then asking your child to identify it – they could even show you what they think they look like when they’re feeling that emotion too.  Play describing games with construction toys, such as ‘What is it?’ and ‘Communication House’ from the LEGO Six Bricks booklet. These games, and others that encourage children to describe what they are doing well enough for their friends to build items based on their descriptions, are great ways to stimulate thoughtful communication. Consume content together – whether it’s a TV programme or reading a book together – and then discuss what happened afterwards. Ask questions about the plot, about the characters, and even about how the story made your child feel. Remember to let your child express their thoughts and views about the story – you may even see the world from a completely different perspective! Use car time to talk. When you’re doing the school or extra-murals parents’ taxi run, ask your child about their day – but avoid questions that can be answered with that dead-end word – ‘fine’. Ask what the best and worst parts of the day were, or what their favourite activity was – and share those elements of your day too. Helping your child improve their communication skills could be as simple as talking about what you’re doing as you go about your daily tasks, or it could be as focused as playing a game that’s purpose-designed to improve their confidence and vocabulary. Whichever activity you choose, it’s important to be engaged and to listen to the feedback you’re getting – communication does, after all, go at least two ways! Ready, Set, Go! Top Tips and Tricks to Starting Solids with Your Baby

Your baby is nearing six months and excitement starts to mount as you prepare to introduce solids for the first time. This is often called first-foods (weaning) or complementary feeding, implying that foods complement milk at this stage of the weaning journey, instead of replacing it entirely. Even though milk alone may not meet your baby’s nutritional needs anymore, it is still an important source of nutrients and minerals essential for healthy growth and this means that you will still offer baby milk when you first start with solid foods. Ready… The best food to start with is one that is culturally acceptable and familiar to the family. Traditionally, this may be a soft porridge like rice porridge or maize porridge, but other options may be single flavours like puréed sweet potato, or butternut, carrots, apples, pears, pawpaw, or peaches. Regardless of the food you choose, prepare it with breast milk (or formula) to help your baby recognise a flavour that they have been used to for the past 6 months. Offer this food for three days before moving on to another food or changing the flavour in the food. For example, if your baby likes pumpkin, mix with pureed apple or a sprinkle of cinnamon next time as you can mix foods together from early on. It is good practice to continually offer baby’s tastebuds new flavours and taste dimensions as you progress on your solids journey. There is no evidence that babies will not like veggies if they have already had naturally sweeter fruit. It is also suggested that you try a food that is not an allergen for now, avoiding for example a wheat-based cereal (gluten), yoghurt (cow’s milk) or egg at first. For a convenient way to get your baby to try its first foods, why not try Squish 100% fruit and veg purees? Squish offers a range of 100% fruit and veg purees and pressed 100% fruit and veg juices. The convenient pouches are well-loved amongst mommies and are perfect for babies from the first introduction of solids, right through the weaning process – from babies to toddlers and beyond. Squish 100% fruit and veg puree and juice flavours give parents a broader range of taste options for even the fussiest of eaters, right from the first introduction of solids through to a full meal, or tasty snack. Set… Time to stock up on baby-friendly spoons, bowls, and bibs. Think about where you want to feed your baby. Choose an appropriate feeding space, one that will help promote sensory stimulation and the social aspect of mealtimes. Remember, meals do not need to be limited to the feeding chair and you can feed your baby on the lap. Meals also do not need to be limited to the kitchen or dining room.  When age appropriate, sit on the floor with a blanket or outside under the trees on a warm day. Regardless, it is important to ensure however that your baby is always well supported and sitting upright when being fed. Invest in different sized bowls with fun colours (silicon cups work great) and a fun mini cooler bag for when you’re out and about. Squish 100% fruit and purees and pressed juices offer convenient meal solutions whether at home, on the go, right from the start of the weaning journey.  And because Squish purees are free from preservatives, flavourants, colourants, you can rest assured you are offering your baby a meal that is pretty much the same as making it yourself. Go! It’s go time which means it’s time to choose the right time of day, ideally when both you and your baby are calm, relaxed, and not in a rush. This may be the weekend for working parents, or a weekday for stay-at-home moms. You may also want to include other family members for this memorable milestone. The best time of the day to start offering solids to your baby is when your baby is most alert and awake, and in a happy mood. This may be after waking from a midmorning nap and between milk feeds so that your baby is not too tired, too hungry, or too full. During the beginning stages, do not worry too much about the formality of mealtimes as we know it, like offering cereal for breakfast at 8am or a vegetable with lunch at 1pm. Follow your baby’s lead and enjoy these special first moments watching your baby’s taste buds get excited about solid food. You can then start to add other tastes and eventually other textures when your baby is ready, and Squish 100% fruit and veg purees offer a meal solution for every occasion.

Generics and biosimilars – champion cost savers in the healthcare industry

It is common knowledge that healthcare costs rise exponentially and medical schemes have to find ways to reduce costs both for the medical scheme and its members. Kathy Malherbe spoke to Dr Morgan Mkhatshwa, Head of Operations at Bonitas Medical Fund, about generics and biosimilars and how they contribute towards reducing healthcare costs. One of the cost drivers is medication which is why The Pharmacy Act of 1997 and the Medicines Control Amendment Act, among other things, have made it mandatory for dispensers of medicine, be they doctors or pharmacists, to offer a patient a generic substitute if one is available. However, generics are not the only cost savers.  The patent expiry on many biological medicines is opening the door to more affordable, life-saving ‘biosimilars’ to be produced – another ‘champion’ in the pharmaceutical industry.  Increased consolidation in the healthcare industry is also having a positive impact on medicine prices and availability. Medical aids are trying to create more competition, even among medicines that are still under patent. They are also tightening up their formularies, in part to encourage pharmaceutical manufacturers to provide better pricing.   What is a generic drug?  A generic is a pharmaceutical drug that contains the same chemical substance as a drug that was originally protected by chemical patents. It is an exact copy of brand-name drugs that has the same dosage, intended use, effects, risks, safety and strength as the original. In other words, their pharmacological effects are identical to those of their brand-name counterparts. But at a much more affordable price… Generic medicines cost, on average, between 30 and 80% less than the original.  What guarantee is there that generics are true replicas?  In South Africa, the Medicines Control Council (MCC) carries the responsibility of making sure that generic drugs are safe and effective. Generic drug manufacturers have to prove their medicine is bioequivalent to the original brand before a product is approved into the local market.   What is a biosimilar? Biological drugs are large, complex proteins made from living cells through highly complex manufacturing processes. Biosimilars are a close equivalent but not exact copies of biologicals. and are manufactured after the patent for the biological/reference drug ends. To be called a biosimilar drug, it must be shown to be safe, work as well as, and work in the same way as its reference drug – the biological. It must also be used in the same way, at the same dose, and for the same condition as the reference drug. The cost of manufacturing biological medicines is more expensive than conventional chemically produced medicines and, because biosimilars are close copies, they remain expensive but are still more cost effective that the original.  What are they used to treat? The most important biological medicines are used to treat conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s disease, multiple sclerosis, diabetes and cancers. How are they different from generics? The reason biological copies are called biosimilars is that, unlike generic medicines, the active ingredients are not exactly the same as the original but ‘similar.’ It is impossible to make identical copies when ‘translating’ biological molecules from living cells in the laboratory. Very importantly to note though, is that even though biosimilars are not a direct copy, the therapeutic effect is the same as the original biological product. Why are generics and biosimilars less expensive? Generics Pharmaceutical companies are researching and testing new active ingredients and medicines all the time. The patent is valid for about 20 years which means that only the approved company may research, create a new formulation (the ‘recipe’ and process for creating the actual medicine) and register the medicine. This takes years and carries a huge financial burden. After about 8 to 10 years on the market the patent usually expires and other drug companies can make an exact copy of the drug without the initial clinical research costs. Biosimilars While these medicines have revolutionised treatments for many diseases, the research and development expenses, including the costs of highly skilled scientists, clinical trials and the specialised equipment needed, are the main cost drivers. Companies are required to fund these costs, often in excess of 10 years, before registration for use by patients.  Biosimilars save costs because: The molecule and effects have already been discovered and identified by the originator The number of patients required in the clinical trials is reduced The original biological medicine would have been ‘manufactured’ at least 20 years ago. New manufacturing methods are more efficient. The cost-efficiencies, which generic and biosimilar medicines provide, are assuming greater importance for state and private health funders as populations age and the prevalence of cancers and other non-communicable diseases increase.  SA’s already stretched healthcare budget is coming under increasing pressure to fund the high cost of pharmaceuticals, especially biological medicines. While generics and biosimilars may not be a panacea for high healthcare costs, they will go a long way towards offering a cost-effective, quality treatment for a large range of diseases. In addition, these breakthrough treatments can halt progression and sometimes even prevent recurrence by acting on proteins that affect the genome/immune system.

I work from home: can I claim tax benefits?

The Covid-19 pandemic has brought with it a shift towards long term workplace flexibility no one could have predicted. Some parents see it as a blessing, others find it distracting and long for the ‘good old days’ of canteen coffee and conference room catch-ups. Whatever your views, if you are an employee who finds themselves with a newfound level of workplace flexibility, there is a benefit you might not have thought about. Did you know SARS offers tax benefits for work from home and remote working employees? And if you read the word ‘tax’ and your mind went to a dark place filled with thoughts of deductibles and deadlines then fear not, we’ve broken it down into four easy steps for you.  Do I qualify for tax benefits? If you are a freelancer or independent contractor working from home in South Africa, then yes, you absolutely do qualify for various income tax benefits. In addition, people who are employed on a fixed term contract or as a permanent employee, who work from home for all or part of the year can claim expenses from their income tax but the requirements are a little more stringent. This includes employees who work partly in office and partly at home in a more hybrid working manner, and would require that you keep a log of the amount of time spent in the office versus at home in order to see if you qualify for the work-from-home tax savings.  What kind of costs can be deducted from income tax? If you own your own business (even as a sole proprietor), you can track any costs related to operating your own business from home as it can reduce your annual income tax bill. If you are employed and work from home, track any costs you need in order to do your job, such as telephone bills, internet costs, office equipment, stationery, cleaning, rent, bond interest, repair costs to your office premises and other expenses in connection to the wear and tear of your operating equipment and working space. Bear in mind the working space needs to be specifically dedicated for the purpose of work, e.g. a home study set up as an office, it cannot be your kitchen counter or a communal space in the home. How do I claim income tax back from SARS? Start by retaining all invoices and slips for expenses incurred. This way you can substantiate that the expenses claimed relate directly to working from home.  For hybrid office and home workers, it’s best to keep a running spreadsheet of days worked from home, and days at the office. Then collate your statements and relevant documentation to the days worked at home so you have a complete record of all your work from home activities for tax purposes. Are permanent and fixed term contracting staff liable for tax deductions? With Covid-19 making it fairly mainstream to work from home, it is welcome news that all employees are liable for tax deductions for home office expenditure, provided they have worked from home for at least six months of the tax year. This is in line with the ‘Section 11(a) as part of the South African Income Tax Act (58 of 1962).’  As remote working becomes more and more the norm, it’s important to keep track of the Income Tax Act as it is sure to evolve and reflect the ever expanding population of remote workers.

Impaq Stars: Shingai Mawire

As part of our Impaq Stars series, we chatted to medical student Shingai Mawire to learn more about his learning experience with Impaq and how Impaq has helped set him on the path to success. He also shares his advice for fellow Impaq learners.  Why did you and your parents decide to do home education with Optimi? We decided to make the switch to homeschooling because of the educational freedom and flexibility it allows. With homeschooling, I could work more quickly through assignments and subjects that I understood and spend more time on challenging subjects, such as Physical Sciences and my favourite subject, Life Sciences. Optimi Campus Lynnwood offers tutorial classes with facilitators for subjects with which learners might struggle. These classes would function as regular ‘school classes’, adding to the knowledge we had already acquired through self-study (homeschooling). I found these to be a beneficial addition to my learning career. What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? Do you have any hobbies you particularly enjoy? Yes, I have many hobbies! Firstly, I’m a massive football fan. I love watching and playing the sport (I play as central defender). If anyone had asked me at five years old what I wanted to be when I grew up, I would have said, ‘I want to be John Terry or Frank Lampard’. Read more: Can homeschoolers take part in extracurricular activities? I also enjoy writing – I am a poet and an author. I wrote multiple poems throughout high school (FET Phase), and I have been writing a book about human behaviour due to the influence of past events. It explains how every human behaviour is a reaction to a person’s childhood and upbringing. Additionally, I enjoy volunteer work. During high school, I would volunteer at hospitals and old age (retirement) homes, including the Medifrail clinic in Equestria, Kalafong hospital in Pretoria West, and the Louis Trichardt old age home in Danville. During your learning journey, did you meet other homeschoolers?  Yes, I met a lot of other learners at Optimi Campus. It was easy to ‘click’ with these learners as we shared a similar and quite remarkable journey. Read more: You’ve got a friend in me What did you like most about Optimi Campus?  I particularly enjoyed how the Optimi Campus facilitators were always ready to help us during the lockdown. Online classes and Zoom sessions were organised, and these extra resources came in handy. I could email any of the facilitators, and they would organise additional classes where possible. I had more Zoom classes when and where possible with the Life Sciences facilitator in particular. The campus manager was also of enormous help, as she would listen to our concerns. How has Impaq helped you follow your dreams or career aspirations? Will you be studying at university? After completing matric, I was accepted into my first year of medical school at Dnipro Medical University in Ukraine in Europe. My course will begin in September this year. I think the most significant way Impaq has helped prepare me for university was how I learned to self-study and got a feel for the lecture structure due to the facilitator classes I attended at Optimi Campus.  Impaq and Optimi Campus also taught me how to be organised (the facilitators would stress the importance of managing our work).  Read more: Teaching kids how to plan Where do you see yourself in 10 years?  I see myself as a medical graduate studying further to specialise as a cardiothoracic surgeon. I envision myself being employed by the NHS (National Health Service) in the United Kingdom when I am fully qualified. Additionally, I hope to create a mobile clinic that offers medical advice to lower-income areas for free.  Do you have any tips for other homeschooling learners who would like to follow the same path as you? Yes: natural talent will help make you a good student but working hard will always take you the extra mile, so I recommend putting in the work! I also recommend homeschooling because the beauty of it is that it allows you to explore what you are really good at and what you love. So, focus on what you love, and you will achieve your goals and dreams!  For more information on Optimi Campus, go to https://optimicampus.co.za/.  By Jacqui Smit

The Tell-Tale Signs That Your Baby is Ready for Solids

The first bath. The first sleepover at granny. The first giggle. And now, the first taste of solid food. Initially babies only need milk (breast or formula) but as your baby grows the more proteins and minerals as well as thicker textures are needed, which is why the introduction of solid foods is crucial in baby’s development. Starting solids is an exciting milestone for the family but can also bring about some distress as to when to start. The World Health Organisation, supported by the South African Department of Health, encourages that babies start solid food from 6 months. This is an optimal time when your baby’s gut and kidneys are physiologically mature enough to handle solid food. Another reason is that your baby is born with only enough iron and certain other mineral stores to last about 6 months, after which your baby will need to start getting iron and other necessary minerals from food. Your baby will also start to show physical and developmental signs that they are ready to start eating solid food. Baby will sit without support and can hold their head steady. Baby will watch as you or a family member moves food to your mouth. Baby may try to grab your food and put it in its mouth. Baby will instinctively open the mouth when a spoon approaches. Baby may start to wake up more frequently for night feeds than before, indicating hunger. If your toddler starts to show these signs, in addition to the age consideration, it may be time to consider introducing solids. During this time it is important to continue to offer your baby milk. It is a good idea for the first solid meal to be offered during the day after a mid-morning nap and milk feed and when your baby is not too tired or too hungry. Your baby needs to be in top form to learn this new skill and to start its first food journey. It is always a better time to start when your  baby is happy, healthy, and well, and not when ill, has a fever or any rashes. For a convenient way to get your baby to try its first foods, why not try Squish 100% fruit and veg purees, perfect for babies from the first introduction of solids, right through the weaning process – from babies to toddlers and beyond. Squish convenient puree pouches are well-loved amongst mommies and provide delicious tasting convenience, whether at home or on the go. Have you had your Vit D3 sunshine shots?

Here’s a winter health fact. Our bodies need Vitamin D for many important processes including supporting the immune system, bone and muscle building, and to promote better sleep and mood.  We can even produce enough vitamin D ourselves. That’s if we bare our arms, legs, back, chests or faces to the sun for a limited period of time, because the sun’s UV rays produce Vitamin D in our bodies. Scientists reckon that five to 15 minutes, or five to 30 minutes for darker skinned people, of sun exposure two or three times a week will do it.  But during winter, just when we need this immune boosting and stress relieving sunny gift to help us through the season of colds and ‘flu, the days are short, we stay indoors, and are usually covered up head to toe for much of the time. But, fun tip ladies: if you wear a cami under your warm clothing, you can head for a sunny spot at a warm time of day, strip off the top layers and you’re all set for a short spot of winter sunbathing. You may not wish to try this at the office! For those of us who can’t do the sun thing, vitamin D is also available in some foods, mainly in fatty fish like pilchards, tuna and salmon. Milk, yogurts and cereals are often fortified with Vitamin D too. Still, there are good reasons why many of us can’t get enough Vitamin D from sun or food (being elderly, covered up clothing for religious reasons, no time to go outside, being darker skinned…). In those cases, a one-a-day Nativa Complex® Vitamin D3 https://www.nativacomplex.co.za/immune-health/#nativa-complex-vitamin-d3 can fill the gap. It’s the newest addition to the well-established Nativa Immune Complex® range.  Nativa Complex® Vitamin D3 supplies 1000 IU of Vitamin D and can be administered from 6 years of age. Cost is around R100 for a month’s supply, from Takealot, Dis-Chem, Clicks and selected pharmacies nationwide. Read about this well formulated immune boosting range at https://www.nativacomplex.co.za/immune-health/#immune-complex-product, and then enter our competition for a chance to win one of two R750 vouchers from Cotton On . Their stylish men’s, women’s and kid’s clothing can see you through winter, and (yay) into Spring.   #VITAMIN D3  #sunshine vitamin

Play Sense launches winter holiday program for pre-schoolers

South Africa has a long winter school holiday over July, when the harshest, cold weather is usually at its peak.  With SA’s third wave of the pandemic on the rise and more lockdown restrictions, families are mostly planning to batten down the hatches at home.  That’s going to be a particular challenge for parents of pre-schoolers who have to adapt to a homebound, indoor existence.  Having your little one home for the entire holidays can be daunting when the opportunities to ramble and play outside are so limited, and many parents are wondering how they are going to cope.   Award-winning early childhood education specialists, Play Sense are coming to the rescue this winter with a free four-week holiday platform, Play Box, which will guide South African parents and their pre-schoolers through an enriching, connected time.  The winter holiday program, aimed at two- to four-year-olds is easily accessible on-line, so parents around the country can sign up and tap into an array of professionally developed resources that will give them structure for their day and loads of fun content. “The winter holiday program artfully blends on and off-line so parents can choose what works best for them,” says Play Sense CEO and Co-founder, Meg Faure.  “Each holiday week has a lovely learning theme, and every day there are two fresh activities that ignite imaginations and enable sensory play, which is so important for this age group.  We have also included optional zoom sessions with our best-loved online teachers who are experts at engaging interactively with little ones on-screen.” The beauty of Play Box is that parents are empowered to proactively share in their child’s development, and it gives them unique opportunities to experience their child learning through play like they do in their pre-school environments. Lara Schoenfeld, Play Sense’s Co-founder and Director of Education says, “It’s a simple, straightforward way for parents to access early childhood education content this holiday.  It’s a simple free registration to Play Box with no need to access any additional platforms or go through a range of logins.  It’s so interesting for parents to get these first-hand insights into how their child responds to different learning materials and activities, and the whole experience fosters deep parent-child bonds.” Play Sense is a SA trailblazer of a unique home environment micro-playschool model based on the development of super-skills, such as creativity, self-regulation and executive function, through imaginary play.  Play Sense learning programs are developed by occupational therapists and qualified pre-school educators to meet the specific needs of toddlers, who are arguably, in the most exciting development stage of human life.  Play Sense offers both off and on-line playschool programs and are adept at getting the best out of both high-touch and high-tech. “What many parents will appreciate in the Play Box holiday program is that it gives them a structure,” says Faure. “Week by week they will journey through the fun worlds of the Jungle, MyTown, Dinosaurs and Bugs.  This is the answer to parents wondering what they are going to do to keep their little ones occupied.  As parents ourselves, we know how to make it easy for others to access well-developed activities and to be smoothly guided through a learning by play experience.  The real spin-off benefit is that your child is going to delight at connecting with you this way, and day by day, your heart will fill up as you see how you are making a wonderful difference for your child.” Here are some activities you and your little one can expect from Play Box this school holiday:  Imaginary play ignites your child’s language, social and emotional skills development  The Jungle-theme week includes going on a safari. Using language and props that are easily found around the house your toddler will be engaged in an imagined scenario. Imaginary play is one of the most powerful ways toddlers learn, and by facilitating this activity, parents will improve their skills to facilitate other fun games to play with your child around the house. Sensory play develops your child’s motor skills, cognitive reasoning, language, creativity, and imagination The Bug-theme week includes creating the amazing butterfly lifecycle using play dough, one of Play Sense’s favourite toys. This extra sensory activity will spark other ideas of the magical worlds and scenarios you can create together at home using simple and inexpensive materials. Creative play encourages your child’s cognitive and language development, as well as motor skills The My Town-theme week will explore different human roles and includes engrossing art activities. Your toddler’s creative activities from working with paint to create pictures to building Lego walls is more about the creative process than the end product. Movement play develops your child’s language and gross motor skills while having so much fun The Dinosaurs-theme week includes lots of enriching music and movement play. Movement play activities are not only designed to develop your little one’s body sense but is perfect for setting off fits of giggles and having silly fun together.  The Play Sense Winter holiday Play Box is available from 28 June to 28 July 2021.  The program is accessible for free, and you can register here.

The Myths and Facts about socialisation and homeschooling

The socialisation myth was born out of a misconception of what it means to be homeschooled. Many critics, educators, and parents still believe that homeschoolers hit the books at 9 am do schoolwork until 4 pm, and spend the entire day alone and isolated from the rest of the world. This notion, of course, is quite uninformed! This topic of the effect homeschooling has on socialisation has been one of the most heavily researched issues for years now. People still have trouble conceiving how or if a child can develop optimal social and emotional skills when homeschooled. These concerns are almost always goodhearted but usually said from a position where people assume that the conventional way of schooling is the only way, and have done very little research on the subject. These assumptions arise from a variety of misconceptions and If you’re thinking about homeschooling, this article can help you understand the myths and facts about socialisation and homeschooling. Let us first understand the definition of socialisation. Socialization is (1) the activity of interacting with other people through which (2) the process of internalizing occurs. We internalize norms, rules, appropriate behaviors, values, ideologies, basic attitudes, self-image, and everything else that’s culturally dependent.  Children do not always respond well in large groups of 20 or 30, where peer pressure is high and kids feel the need to look and act the same way as their counterparts. Learners find themselves surrounded by rivalry, competition, and ridicule. Large groups of children become noisy and result in kids becoming nervous and over-excited. Learning becomes difficult and this is when behavioral problems develop. Does this sound like an environment for healthy socialisation? Dr. Raymond Moore, an author of over 60 books and articles on human development, who has done extensive research on homeschooling and socialisation says this in his book, The Hurried Child, “The idea that children need to be around many other youngsters to be ‘socialized, is perhaps the most dangerous and extravagant myth in education and child-rearing today.” After analyzing over 8,000 early childhood studies, Dr. Moore concluded that, contrary to popular belief, children are best socialized by parents – not other children. A homeschooler knows she is part of a family unit that needs, wants, and depends on her. She does not have to follow the crowd or continuously be compared to her peers. By interacting with her parents and siblings she has a greater opportunity to build confidence, self-respect, and self-worth. The result is an independent thinker who isn’t influenced by peers and is self-directed in her actions and thoughts. Children need time to dream and grow and find out what it is they love to do. This is something few children enjoy today as they spend the majority of their time at school trying to fit into the same mold as every other student, never given the freedom to be an individual with their own set of needs. They are never alone at school, and their after-school lives are packed full of activities, as well.  Homeschoolers have a wonderful opportunity to spend more time on the things that drive them and by joining sports clubs and group programs in their community they can enjoy all forms of socialisation. Socialization, like learning and life, takes place every day. How you interact with your kids – and how they watch you interact with the outside world – teaches them all the social skills they’ll need to know. Stop worrying about socialization. It’s a “problem” that never existed!

How to protect yourself from financial fraud

Many of us have experienced that sinking feeling when we realise we’ve been conned. If you’re lucky, you may have lost only a battered old wallet containing a few banknotes. Others may not be so fortunate. Media regularly carry reports of highly experienced business leaders who’ve lost substantial amounts after falling prey to smooth-talking conmen promising investment returns well above the norm. “You go through so many emotions when you realise that you, or someone close to you, has been scammed,” says Shafeeka Anthony, Marketing Manager of personal finance website JustMoney. “Your feelings of trust, dignity, security and self-esteem are affected. Life seems uncertain and out of control.  “There’s also the stress of spending hours with the police, banks and other institutions in order to report fraud, close compromised accounts and obtain new documents.” According to the South African Banking Risk Information Centre (SABRIC), which keeps people informed about the latest banking scams and fraudster activity, digital banking incidents increased by 20% in 2019 on the previous year.  Cybercrimes are increasing at an “alarming” rate, according to the SABRIC 2019 annual crimes stats report. These crimes will eventually replace many ‘traditional’ bank crimes as they “transcend time and physical proximity due to their virtual nature”. Says Anthony: “You may not think your information is important enough to interest a fraudster, but in fact a cybercriminal could be looking for an identity just like yours to avoid raising suspicion. Your details – name, address, ID and bank details – could be used to apply for a credit card or loan in your name, or to create a fake driver’s licence or passport.” JustMoney offers the following tips to avoid being fleeced by a fraudster: Use tough-to-crack passwords, keep them to yourself, and change them regularly. Don’t click on hyperlinks or open attachments if you receive an email from a stranger.  Protect sensitive information by installing antivirus, firewall and spyware protection on your computer. Keep this updated. The lockdown has led to much more online shopping. Only do business with familiar companies. Take care of your filing. Documents can be stolen from your car or office without you being aware that they are missing or have been copied. Shred or burn documents with sensitive information rather than adding them to the recycling.  Do not carry all your ID cards or documents with you. Generally, only one is necessary for day-to-day activities, so lock the rest away. Do not use internet café s or communal spaces to shop or bank online.  Read a JustMoney article with more tips on protecting yourself against banking fraud here. Find out more about how to identify an investment scam here. “Given the current Covid-19 conditions, some fraudsters ask for donations on behalf of real or fake non-profits, claiming to assist people affected by the pandemic,” says Anthony. “While most of us are happy to help a good cause, take time to check the legitimacy of a non-profit organisation, or the person contacting you, before making a donation.” Read more on how to avoid being scammed for a good cause here. Credit check Another helpful tip from Anthony is to check your credit report regularly. This is a record of your financial history that shows your outstanding debt, both long-term and short-term, and the number of accounts you have open. It can provide an early warning of fraudulent activity.  Read a JustMoney guide to credit reports here and sign up to get a free report here. Report fraud If you have been a victim of fraud, report it to the police immediately and ask for a case number. You can also contact the SA Fraud Prevention Service on 011 867 2234 or at www.safps.org.za, should your ID be used to commit fraud or be stolen. JustMoney JustMoney is a personal finance website that provides busy and digitally-savvy South Africans with easy access to financial products, services and information. Five signs that you are Collagen Deficient

With winter on its way, is your body sending you the sign’s that it’s collagen-deficient? If your neck is drooping, your hair is drying out and your joints ache, these are all warning signs that you may be collagen-deficient. And the worst is yet to come.  Catherine Clark, the Owner and Founder of Harvest Table says that while there is no way to measure the amount of collagen in your body, you can generally tell when your body doesn’t have enough.  “Collagen deficiency strikes nearly everyone over the age of 30. As you age, your body naturally begins to manufacture less collagen. But this is the glue that holds your body together and without it, your body literally starts falling apart. So if you have any of the signs that you may have a collagen deficiency, it’s time to act,” Catherine explains.  Catherine shares five of the key signals that you could be collagen deficient. Wrinkling It’s not just your imagination, winter really is harder on your skin as cold air and wind strip away the skin’s hydration. That’s why you will often see more wrinkles appearing in the colder months, especially on your face. The great news is that collagen will keep your skin strong and elastic. Collagen aids in the skin’s hydration and helps wound repair and stretch marks by improving skin elasticity. It will also help your fingernails and hair grow and keep your teeth strong.  You lose flexibility If your collagen stores are running low, you may lose some flexibility and find that your tendons and ligaments are stiffer. Whether you head indoors during winter or brave the cold outside, collagen can aid in exercise recovery and muscle growth. Glycine and arginine, two of the most important amino acids found in collagen, play a role in helping to form and repair muscle tissue, healing injuries, sparing tissue wasting, boosting the metabolism and aiding in muscle development.  Joint pain Another all too common problem you may experience is joint pain. Though we often assume this is a natural part of ageing or caused by over-exercising, it can actually be due to a collagen deficiency. Cartilage is the buoyant, rubber-like tissue that covers the ends of long bones at the joints and it’s mostly made up of collagen. A collagen deficiency leads to more bone-on-bone movement, which can cause excessive friction that will lead to inflammation and may eventually progress to arthritis. Collagen will assist your body in preventing joint stiffness, swelling and pain. Cellulite A collagen deficiency can also result in worsening cellulite. When the fatty tissues underneath your skin push upward against your body’s connective tissues, the skin at the surface begins to pucker, resulting in cellulite. As your levels of collagen reduce, your skin becomes less firm, grows thinner and becomes more vulnerable to damage. The result is the all too familiar “orange peel” look that worsens with age. Collagen will boost your cell renewal and the skin’s suppleness and will reduce the all too obvious signs of cellulite.  Digestive problems Uncomfortable bloating and other gut symptoms can be an indication that your body needs more collagen. A lack of collagen in the gut can lead to intestinal permeability or “leaky gut syndrome” and symptoms include constipation, diarrhoea, brain fog, fatigue and an impaired immune system. Again, this is easy to reverse if you boost your body’s collagen levels.  Catherine says that the easiest and most efficient way to address a collagen deficiency is to look after your body with the right diet and supplements.  “While we often think of wellness in terms of what we can see and apply on the outside, there’s a lot that can, and should, happen on the inside,” Catherine explains. “By supplementing your diet with collagen and making it part of your daily routine, you can vastly improve your skin and boost immune, cardiovascular and digestive health. Healthy winter skin and joints are only one scoop away.”  Harvest Table has a wide range of collagen products that are available from www.harvesttable.co.za. Follow Catherine on Instagram: @whole_healthy_me.

How to select makeup based on your skin type

There’s more to choosing makeup than finding your perfect colour match and selecting products that offer great value. When purchasing makeup, it’s important to take the formula into account, not only to ensure it offers comfortable wear and easy application, but also to ensure it is suitable for your skin type.  There are so many different formulas available when it comes to items like foundation, blush, highlighter and bronzer, be it liquid, powder, cream or mousse. While most makeup products are suitable for anyone to use, there’s no doubt that certain formulations work better on certain skin types. Oily and combination skin types  Oily and combination skins produce too much sebum, which can lead to clogged and enlarged pores, blackheads and breakouts, as well as a shiny complexion.  People with very oily skin sometimes have difficulty finding a foundation that doesn’t slide off the skin after a couple of hours. A makeup primer can help keep your foundation in place. Pretty By Flormar’s Mattifying Primer (R149.95) and wet n wild’s Coverall Primer (R109.95) are both great options to consider.  Liquid matte foundation formulations are a perfect match for oily and combination skin as they are usually oil-free and won’t leave a greasy sheen on the skin. Pretty By Flormar Get Real Matte Foundation(R164.95) has a creamy texture to ensure smooth application but an oil-free formulation that offers matte coverage. wet n wild PhotoFocus Foundation (R119.95) is a high-performing, skin-perfecting foundation specially made with a matte, light-diffusing complex to give your skin #nofilter perfection. When it comes to selecting blush, bronzers or highlighters, powder formulations work best on oily skin types as they absorb moisture. It’s best to avoid liquid formulations as these may slide off the skin or end up looking overly shiny. wet n wild Color Icon Bronzer (R99.95) applies like a cream but has a powder finish and a long-wearing formula, so it’ll stay put all day. Pretty By Flormar Baked Highlighter (R149.95) and Baked Blush (R164.95) are great powder options for oily skins that don’t skimp on shimmer and colour pay-off. For oily skin, an eyelid primer is a non-negotiable. Prime your eyelids with wet n wild PhotoFocus Eyeshadow Primer (R109.95) to lock your eyeshadow in place all day long.  Dry or dehydrated skin types Dry and dehydrated skin types lack either sufficient oil or water. This can lead to a dull or lacklustre complexion, scaling, cracking and flaking. These skin types benefit from moisture-boosting makeup products, as well as those that create a faux glow. Avoid matte foundations if your skin is dry or dehydrated, as these can make the skin look dull and exaggerate a flaky texture. Opt for a dewy liquid or cream foundation like wet n wild’s PhotoFocus Dewy Foundation (R119.95) instead. The moisturising formula blends seamlessly while blurring imperfections and gives the skin a dewy finish. Because this is such a lightweight foundation, it’s best applied with a brush. The Real Techniques Expert Face Brush (R235.49) has ultra-plush firm bristles for easy application of liquid foundations. To blend the colour perfectly, we recommend the Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge (R156.49). It can be used damp or dry and is suitable for both liquid and cream foundations. Dry skins may benefit from choosing cream, stick or liquid highlighters, bronzers or contouring products rather than powder formulations. wet n wild’s MegaGlo Dual-Ended Contour Stick (R129.95) has a contouring and a highlighting end in a handy stick format that glides on with ease. If you have dry skin, opt for a liquid concealer rather than a stick concealer as the formula will glade across your skin more easily and offer more moisture. The wet n wild PhotoFocus Concealer (R74.95) hides blemishes, dark circles and scars while brightening the skin – a major bonus for dry skins that lean towards the lacklustre side. All skin types rely on a good quality skincare routine to ensure skin gets the nutrients and hydration it needs, and also to prep the skin before makeup application. ZERO Face Wash (R299) is a fantastic cleanser for all skin types. This plant-based gel cleanser gently washes away makeup, dirt and impurities without stripping the skin of its natural moisture. ZERO Day Cream (R399) and Night Cream (R399) offer skin a boost of hydration, but their natural ingredients won’t clog pores or lead to increased sebum production.

When to start applying at universities abroad

Matric students who want to study in the United States and United Kingdom next year need to start preparing their applications now. With global admission trends showing a record increase in applicants for the class of 2025, students competing for places at top universities abroad will be facing a tough admissions environment.  “When it comes to applying to top universities, there’s no such thing as being too prepared. Ideally, you should give your application at least an 18-month lead time, but matrics who are only starting to think about their applications now, still have a chance of gaining admission – provided they stick to deadlines,” says Rebecca Pretorius, Country Manager at Crimson Education, a global mentorship company, which focuses on building the candidacy of high school students wanting to study at top-ranked universities in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Europe, Australia and New Zealand. According to data collected by Crimson Education, the 2020/2021 admissions season saw applications to universities increase by 30%. In the US, new standardised test policies meant that SAT(Scholastic Aptitude Test), and ACT (American College Testing) scores were not required for even Ivy-league schools, resulting in a huge jump in application numbers. At the same time, universities saw a 7% drop in admission rates overall, due to the number of students who had deferred their offers as a result of COVID-19 in the previous year. With the extension of test-optional policies at top universities, turbulent admissions are predicted to persist into the 2021/2022 admissions cycle. With applications for international universities opening as early as August, students need to be mindful that the application process for studying abroad takes up a lot of time. “A key component of the application process is deciding which universities to apply to. In between juggling Grade 12 exams and activities, and making decisions about courses, majors, and future careers, students will also need to sit for admissions tests, write personal statements, supplementary essays, and in some cases activity lists,” says Pretorius.  Pretorius breaks down an admissions roadmap for US/UK admissions in 2022, for those who haven’t started yet:  May 2021 – Familiarise yourself with the application process and research the universities you want to apply to. You should have a good idea of the various, course, accommodation deadlines, and fee requirements. July 2021 – Finalise your course and university choices and start your personal statement and essay writing. Secure your letters of recommendation from your teachers.  June to September 2021 – Register and prepare for standardised admission tests including the SAT, the ACT for the US, the BMAT (BioMedical Admissions Test) for UK Medicine courses, and LNAT (Law National Aptitude Test) for applications to UK Law, among others. October 2021 to November 2021 – Submit applications to Oxford/Cambridge and UK medicine courses, and Early Action/Early Decision applications for US universities.  December 2021 to January 2022 – Submit your Regular Decision applications by 1 to 15 January. Prepare for personal/video interviews which take place between January and March.  December 2021 to April 2022 – Get your results! Once you’ve received your offer from a university, get the paperwork ready, apply for your student visa, book your flights, and you’re off! Through a team mentorship model, Crimson connects learners with admission strategists and tutors to assist them with the complex application process for overseas universities. In 2021, over 800 Crimson students received offers to the top 10 UK universities, with over 2 200 receiving offers to the top 50 US universities. Crimson offers regular online workshops and webinars to provide local students with information on how to apply internationally. For more information, visit www.crimsoneducation.org/za.

The Importance of Critical Thinking Skills in the Workplace

Critical thinking skills are, well, critical in the workplace. From helping employees solve problems to ensuring they can build strategies that make them better at their jobs, this skill is something all professionals need. But what exactly is critical thinking, and why is it so important in the workplace?  Here’s what you need to know: What is Critical Thinking? When you use critical thinking skills, you’re essentially deploying rationality to determine the best solution to a problem. If you have this skill, you’re reflective, competent, and independent. By deploying critical thinking, you’ll be able to connect ideas and evaluate arguments logically. It also allows you to spot errors in your work and that of others to engage in reflection. But critical thinkers aren’t only good at gathering information says online job aggregator Adzuna. They know how to best use the information to conceptualise outcomes. Considered a soft skill, this skill is something inherent in personality, but it is also possible to develop this skill. Why Critical Thinking Matters in the Workplace It’s a requirement in some professions Careers in law, research, education, finance, and research all require employees to display critical thinking skills. Whenever the goal is to deduce information objectively, analyse it, and solve creative problems with the information at hand, this skill is a prerequisite. It improves decision-making skills Critical thinking can help you make more informed decisions about life-changing events like a career change. It enables you to focus outside of the initial emotional response that you might have when something significant needs to be decided on. Critical thinkers are happier people Because this skill helps people to better understand themselves, their goals, and motivations, promoting personal growth and overall happiness levels. Critical thinkers also have the ability to look at challenges from unique perspectives, which makes them more self-reflective as well. How to Improve Your Critical Thinking Skills Carefully consider new information The first step toward developing your critical thinking skills is only to accept information after you’ve evaluated it. Always strive to find the objective truth. Consider possible challenges and solutions of new information and don’t simply accept it because you read or heard it somewhere. Evaluate the source Where are you getting your new information from? If you’ve just seen a new advertisement, consider the fact that the marketing technique is designed to sell something and might be targeting potential bias. Always consider the source of new information and the reason why you’re receiving this new information. Ask questions Questioning information is an important skill to master to develop your critical thinking skills. Consider different ways for problems to be solved. Question the motives of why new information is being provided. Think about the perspectives that others might have on the topic. Ask about the kind of research the topic in question is backed by. Research After questioning new information and its sources, you need to form your own opinion. But to do that, you need to do some research first. Syndicated news sites, educational institutions, and non-profit organizations are all great online resources that can help you learn as much as possible about a new topic. In Conclusion You might already have many of the skills we’ve just listed, but there is always room for improvement. You can continuously improve your critical thinking skills through additional training and continual practice. This soft skill is valuable for all aspects of your life and benefits problem-solving, creativity, and teamwork. It also translates particularly well to the workplace, where it can distinguish you as a valuable employee and a team player!

Review: REMY – A Book About Believing In Yourself

REMY is a short story revolving around the everyday life of a school boy named Remy. This young boy has very own battles to face and conquer. Along the way, comfort characters not only come to give him comfort but some guidance which would really love to master.  Naidoo has written an encouraging story to help and direct others in conquering their own battles. I enjoyed the journey of Remy going through bumps and realistic fallbacks as the lessons throughout the story can be applied in other scenarios. I feel that not only would young children, tweens and teens relates to this book but to many adults who lack self confidence in themselves and what they would like to achieve. Remy’s character was developed in a way I do not often see or read about. I think that everyone would benefit from taking a page out of his book. The story makes sense and gave a simplified view on growth at a well written flowing pace that replicates a natural journey for someone to go through.  Overall, I highly recommend this book. I found Remy’s story to be quite heartwarming, enjoyable and encouraging in my own story. This book is perfect for parents who are encouraging self growth and the understanding of emotions.  You can grab yourself a copy at www.mayurinaidoo.com. This lovely story was written by Mayuri Nadioo

RediscoverDairy

The dairy solution to lactose intolerance

“Lactose intolerance is not a milk allergy, but a gastrointestinal disturbance that happens after consuming more lactose than the body can handle”, says Maretha Vermaak, registered dietitian at Rediscover Dairy. “It is merely the inability to digest the sugar naturally found in milk and milk products, called lactose.”  Lactose consists of two sugar components, namely glucose and galactose, bound together. During normal digestion, the body produces an enzyme called lactase to separate these two sugar components, so that they can be absorbed into the blood. If the body does not produce enough of the enzyme lactase, the two sugar units cannot be separated. The milk sugar then starts to ferment, which can lead to uncomfortable symptoms such as bloating, gas, loose stools and stomach pain.  Most people who are lactose intolerant can tolerate up to 12 g of lactose in a single dose and experience few or no symptoms. A cup of milk (250 ml) typically contains 12 g of lactose. Dairy foods such as milk, maas, yoghurt and cheese provide important nutrients such as protein, calcium and potassium. Everyone – young and old – needs these nutrients for good nutrition.  Lactose intolerance should not prevent you from having a healthy, balanced diet including milk and dairy products. Here’s how you can tolerate lactose better: Consume small amounts of milk and dairy at a time and space your intake throughout the day. Full-cream milk is tolerated better than low-fat or fat-free milk. Use milk and dairy foods combined with another food. For example, have milk with cereal or pap, stir plain yogurt or amasi into soup or have cheese on bread. Eating lactose-containing foods such as milk and other dairy products with other types of food slows the digestion of lactose and so helps to ease possible discomfort. Cheeses such as Cheddar, Gouda and Mozzarella contain very little lactose (less than 1 g lactose in a portion of 40 g) and are generally tolerated well. In fermented dairy products such as yoghurt and amasi some of the lactose is already broken down. As the live cultures in fermented dairy also improve lactose digestion, yoghurt and amasi are ideal choices if you are lactose intolerant. You can also try lactose-free dairy products. Dairy products help to build strong bones and teeth and contribute to good overall health. So, don’t miss out! You can benefit from the nutrients in dairy even if you are lactose intolerant.  For any other questions about dairy, please visit: www.rediscoverdairy.co.za/askdairy/

MiVoice

10 reasons to download the all-new MiVoice app

We’re so fortunate in South Africa as many of us have domestic employees to help us raise our children right and keep our homes and gardens in tip-top condition. Unfortunately, less than half of those domestic employees have the security of a formal work contract. This means that they could be unfairly disciplined or dismissed, and may be underpaid or given less leave than they’re due because these factors rely on the memories of both the domestic employer and employee.  Fortunately, there’s now an app to manage your domestic employees from start to finish. The MiVoice app is the world’s first fully mobile HR management solution for domestic employees and offers everything you need to simplify your life and improve the way you work with these valuable  helpers. Read on to discover ten reasons why you should download the free MiVoice app today. 1.Oh-so-easy sign-in MiVoice’s GPS-enabled sign-in and sign-out feature is not only invaluable when pay day rolls around, but lets you raise an early alarm if someone you rely on doesn’t arrive as expected. 2.Keep Covid compliant It is now law for all employers, even domestic, to screen workers for Covid-19 symptoms on arrival at work. MiVoice ensures you’re Covid-compliant, with screening questions built into the app’s sign-in feature. 3.Protection under the law Falling foul of the CCMA is the last thing you need in your busy life. Yet if you don’t have a formal contract with your domestic employees, signed proof of leave requests, and detailed records stretching back for three years, that’s exactly what you might one day face.  MiVoice puts you on the right side of the Basic Conditions of Employment Act, while giving your valued home helpers the legal workplace recognition they deserve. With MiVoice, you get compliant app-generated employment contracts, pay slips and leave requests, all safely stored for future reference. 4.Get smart with task management No more scrawling notes on scraps of paper and taping them to the fridge. With MiVoice’s daily task lists, you can plan tasks in advance and clearly communicate what you expect from your domestic helpers. Employees check off tasks as they do them, leave comments where needed, and alert you if anything is preventing a task’s completion. 5.Leave the leave calculations to MiVoice No more forgetting who’s on leave when or scrambling to find a fill-in at short notice. MiVoice’s leave application feature lets your employees formally request leave in advance, covering you legally and making future-planning that much easier. Formal records also ensure your employees get the full quota of leave they’re entitled to. 6.Take the hassle out of month-end Pay day is a breeze with MiVoice. Thanks to the sign-in feature, MiVoice knows exactly when and for how long your employees worked. It automatically calculates and generates compliant pay slips for each employee, based on their specific remuneration package and structure. 7.Safe, effortless payments Top up your MiVoice account, and the app seamlessly deposits the wages into your employees’ MiVoice wallets, keeping appropriate records of course. All MiVoice’s systems are protected by the same security measures already audited by its sponsoring bank and as required under its Third-Party Payment Processer license; so you can rest assured that your employees’ wages are in secure hands. 8.Easy, secure, zero-cost wallet Use of the MiVoice wallet costs employers a minimal R49 per month per employee. With bank fees subsidized by their employer, domestic employees can use their MiVoice wallet to make five free transfers per employer to their bank account, free payments to any account, and withdraw cash from selected major retailers (charges are levied for this by retailers). The MiVoice wallet also offers charge-free airtime, data and electricity purchases, as well as digital vouchers for everywhere from Boxer to Wimpy that they can use themselves or send via text message to a child or caregiver back home. 9.Help when they need it most With a quick tap of a button, your child-minder and domestic employees get immediate medical and security help when they need it. MiVoice instantly connects with Response24’s control room which coordinates ambulance and armed response dispatch if required.  Less critical situations like a child-minder running out of fuel on the school run can also be handled through the emergency function, connecting your staff to a chatroom of contacts for quick and easy problem resolution. 10.Keeping employees covered A MiVoice subscription includes commuter accident insurance that pays out R10 000 to your employee’s beneficiaries in the event of accidental death. Accidents leading to a hospital stay pay out R250 daily for up to 20 days to both employee and employer, to cover expenses like transport costs for family visits, or temporary help while a carer is out of action. So download the MiVoice app from the App Store or Google Play today and make the way you manage your household employees easier, better, safer and legally compliant. Because sometimes, the best thing and the right thing are the same thing.

Choosing Agricultural Sciences & Agricultural Management Practices – everything you need to know

In a brand-new blog series, we will be exploring the various subjects offered by Impaq in the FET Phase (Grades 10 – 12). We spoke to education specialist Janet Zandberg and Impaq alumnus Carla Botha to learn more about Agricultural Sciences and Agricultural Management Practices as subjects. Agricultural Sciences vs Agricultural Management Practices While choosing subjects in Grade 9, many learners are unsure of the difference between Agricultural Sciences and Agricultural Management Practices. We asked Zandberg to explain the differences between these two subjects below. Agricultural Sciences  “Agricultural Sciences (AGS) is a science,” Zandberg says. It is the study of the relationship between soils, plants, and animals in the production and processing of food, fibre, fuel, and other agricultural commodities with economic, aesthetic, and cultural value.  Zandberg says that Agricultural Sciences is a subject that can be used when a learner wants to go to university to study for a bachelor’s degree or a diploma. Agricultural Sciences contains content such as: soil sciences,  basic agricultural chemistry, animal nutrition,  animal reproduction, and genetics. Agricultural Management Practices  “Agricultural Management Practices (AMP) is a more practical subject,” Zandberg explains. It is the study and application of production, economic, and management principles used in the cultivation, transformation, and marketing of food and other agricultural products. Learners who take Agricultural Management Practices must complete a practical assessment task (PAT) on a farm for 40 hours in Grade 10, 11 and 12. Agricultural Management Practices contains content such as: crop production and management, animal management practices, plant reproduction, farm planning, and production management. “If a learner loves farming and animals, Agricultural Management Practices is a better choice,” Zandberg says.  farming is a possible career option, Agricultural Management Practices will be the best choice,” Zandberg says. “For further study, Agricultural Sciences will be the best choice,” she adds. Life is better on the farm Carla Botha, who has been studying through Impaq since Grade 1, says that she had no doubt about the subjects she wanted to choose when making subject choices in Grade 9. “For as long as I can remember, I have wanted to be a farmer,” Botha explains. When she learned that Impaq offered two agricultural subjects in the FET Phase, she was overjoyed. “When the time came to choose my subjects there was no doubt that I would take both,” she adds.  Completing her practical assessment tasks in Agricultural Management Practices was the highlight of Botha’s school year, three years in a row. “Getting to document every aspect of ‘my farm’ was so much fun. I had an excuse to take over 500 photos of everything farm related,” she explains. Botha also enjoyed the depth of the lesson material when it came to Agricultural Sciences. “The knowledge I obtained helps me in my everyday work,” she explains.  Also read: How to easily complete practical subjects through home education What you plant now, you will harvest later Both Agricultural Sciences and Agricultural Management Practices requires hard work to complete the subjects successfully. “In both subjects, learners will have to put in a lot of effort,” Zandberg says. Agricultural Sciences  Zandberg advises learners to only take Agricultural Sciences if they plan on going to a university or college for further training. “It is a challenging subject and must not be underestimated,” Zandberg says. Botha agrees and says that she had difficulty with the chemistry aspect of the subject in Grade 11. “This was my first encounter with chemistry, and I dreadfully struggled to master this part of the subject,” she explains. While taking Mathematics with Agricultural Sciences is not compulsory, Mathematics will be a requirement if a learner wants to study BSc Agricultural or Veterinary Sciences after completing Grade 12.  Top tip: Ensure that you know what the requirements are for further study at tertiary institutions. Also read: How to change a learner’s perception of difficulty to achieve success Agricultural Management Practices  Zandberg explains that if learners take Agricultural Management Practices, they will need access to a farm to complete their practical assessments tasks (PATs) successfully. “Learners must be part of the practical activities on a farm or an active production enterprise for at least 40 hours per year,” Zandberg says. A farmer or veterinarian must assess the PAT. If the assessor is a farmer, the farmer must have been operating the farming enterprise for at least five (5) years. If the assessor is a veterinarian, their qualification, practice number, and the number of years they have operated their practice must be submitted along with the PAT. Botha says that with Agricultural Management Practices, she did not struggle with the lesson material as it was her favourite subject. “There were a few of the assignments that were out of season for my area, Vanrhynsdorp in the Western Cape, and it brought forth a bit of a challenge but nevertheless it was fun,” Botha explains.  Top tip: Ensure that you have access to a farm when choosing Agricultural Management Practices as a subject. Leaders in the field Agricultural Sciences and Agricultural Management Practices prepares learners for entry into further studies for a possible career in a variety of fields (pun intended). Typical career paths for Agricultural Sciences include: a veterinarian or veterinarian assistant,  agricultural researcher,  soil researcher,  a career in animal or plant studies, and a biologist. Typical career paths for Agricultural Management Practices include practical work such as: farming,  farm management,  managing different plant crops, and  caring for farm animals. Working in acres, not in hours  Since Botha graduated as the top Impaq learner in Agricultural Sciences and Agricultural Management Practices in 2019, she has been working as a farm manager. “My focus has primarily been on animal health and reproduction,” Botha says. She, however, has ambitions to become a mega farmer.  Also read: Life after matric – guiding your child during this next chapter Her advice to other young aspiring farmers is to work hard every day. “Use as many previous papers as possible when studying and use more than one study method

Keeping children safe from burns this winter

Winter is the time when children are most at risk of burns. There is a lot more hot food and drink around and generally trying to stay warm with heaters and fires. All these are potential risks for burns in children. Young children can be burned very quickly, and this often happens even when an adult is present, so it is important to be alert around children. Last year, the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital alone, treated 871 children for burns, the most common (733 children) was caused by hot liquids (such as hot water, drinks and food), followed by flames (48 cases), which are caused by fires. A further 43 children were treated for touching or coming into contact with very hot surfaces such as heaters and hotplates on stoves. “Most burn injuries can be avoided. As most of the burns happen in the home, specifically the kitchen. Make sure that the entire house is installed with smoke alarms. Children are not always able to know when something is dangerous, so parents can start by checking every room in the house for possible burn risks to children. In the kitchen e.g making sure that hanging kettle cords are properly secured and out of a child’s reach. Kettles are a major cause of hot water burns, which is traumatic and can be debilitating for the child.” said Yolande Baker, Executive Director of ChildSafe. Here are a few ways to keep ourselves and our children safe from burns during the winter season. Kitchen area  Turn pot handles away when cooking Keep kettle cords and other electrical wiring out of children’s reach Place matches and lighters out of children’s reach Never hold a child while cooking at the stove Never store things like paraffin, which are highly combustible near any heat Living room  Always check the temperature of food and drink before serving to young children Always place hot liquids and food in the center of the table, using place mats instead of tablecloths which are easy to pull Keep all heaters out of reach of children Install smoke alarms to detect fires in home early Blow out candles before you leave the room or before you go to sleep – we recommend the Candle-in-a-jar Avoid illegal electrical connections and that multiple plugs are not overloaded, as these can overheat causing sparks and fires Never pass hot liquids and food over a child’s head Bathroom Run cold water before hot water Outside the home Never leave open fires unattended and in case of a fire, put the fire out with water When there is a fire inside your home: Warn people inside the house to get out safely. Help people to get out and stay out of harm’s way. If there is a lot of smoke, crawl out below the smoke to escape the fire. Where possible, have more than 1 exit from your house, with clear routes to the door.
