Switching off in a world that is always on

The Covid pandemic and subsequent lockdowns seem to have blurred the lines between work, home and play, making it tough for employees and entrepreneurs to completely switch off and reap the benefits of any “down time” they may be able to carve out for themselves. “The stress of the last year has seen people work harder than ever to protect their livelihoods, which is why taking well-deserved break has become more important than ever,” says Shaun Lamont, Managing Director of First Group Hotels and Resorts. In fact, according to the American Psychological Association, going on holiday improves your physical health by decreasing the risk of heart disease, and improving mental health by reducing depression and anxiety. Shaun says that that whilst most recognise the benefits of going on holiday, many are failing to reap those benefits. “We have witnessed first-hand the lines of pleasure being blurred by business as more and more of our guests are plagued with work whilst on vacation.” He adds, “Going on holiday is the equivalent of sending your brain in for its annual service. You wouldn’t let your car skip its annual check-up and risk a breakdown on the highway, so why do this to your body? Equally essential to taking the time off to go away, is ensuring that you maximise the health benefits thereof by totally embracing the moment.” To do this, Shaun offers 5 tips on how to switch off on holiday: 1. Do a proper hand over to your stand in: The key to a successful stress-free, work-free holiday is a comprehensive hand over. Ease into the idea of being away, by using your email signature to notify everybody of your upcoming leave (way before you’ve even left). Find a reliable, capable colleague who you can trust to be a point of contact in your absence, and hand over any and all outstanding pieces of work to them. Tell your clients, manager/s and employees that you will be uncontactable (gulp!), set your out of office message and update your voicemail (if you still have one). 2. Turn off your phone: As scary as this may sound for someone who is always available, this is a biggie! Unless you turn your phone off totally (putting it on silent just won’t cut it), there will still be messages, emails, news alerts, and app notifications coming through constantly. Your phone is always screaming for your attention so vow to only check it once a day! 3. Take time to unwind and take it easy: Resolve to do less. Don’t try to fill your daily itinerary with as much as possible. Pick just one thing per day – one sight to see, one restaurant to try, one mountain to climb… and then relax for the rest of the day. Laze at the pool, read a book, take an afternoon siesta. You don’t want to feel like you need a holiday from your holiday. 4. Pick the right accommodation: Where you stay can affect your entire holiday experience. If you are travelling with children, make sure you go to a child-friendly resort. If you are going away without the kids, consider a quieter hotel/resort. If you hate the beach, don’t pick a beach holiday – you’ll be miserable. 5. Be present in the moment: Delay the desire to post every photo on social media. Be present in every moment and make lasting, magical memories with your travel crew. If you want to capture the moment, ensure that your data/WIFI on your phone is turned off, so you don’t get tempted into checking notifications. Just use your camera and post the pics later. For those who absolutely can’t afford time off work, Shaun suggests that you consider the idea of a workation, “COVID has changes the rules of work. You no longer have to be confined to the four walls of your dining room or office cubicle. Instead, you can choose to work from some of South Africa’s most beautiful spots and be surrounded by nature or have a sea view. First Group properties, for example, lend themselves to catching up on Zoom or Teams and then taking a break to soak in the scenery – a wonderful balance of work and play.  After all, if you’re going to work, why not make it the best of it?” Shaun concludes.

The New Toy on the Block

What is Snap Ships? Snap Ships is an award-winning space themed construction toy line, making use of a unique core cube building system which combines to create multiple, posable, action play toys. This versatile building system will ensure hours of fun as children can build and rebuild as they choose with their imagination being the only limit. What’s in the box?  Each building set of Snap Ships includes an instruction manual, core cubes, decorative pieces and a pilot figurine. Depending on the size of the model the instruction manual will contain up to three different models to build. Snap Ships feature a unique building system which is based on cubical blocks (core cubes), each with a stud which can connect with ports on the other five sides of the cube. The core cubes serve as the base for assembling a ship. These cubes can even connect at a 45 degree rotation from one another allowing for even more creativity and unique structures. Once the base has been built, then decorative pieces snap into the ports of the cubes. These pieces include wings, fins, engine intakes and exhausts, thrusts, and a variety of weapon systems. Each Snap Ship also includes a secret UJU tech system unique to that set. In fact, it is sealed separately in the packaging to add to the mystery. Sets includes a cockpit piece with an opening canopy into which the pilot can be placed. The box lid can be used as a stand for displaying your Snap Ships making the already unique packaging multi-purpose. Finally, each set comes with a tool for helping to separate parts during disassembly.  When look at the cubes which form the base structure of the ships, they look unremarkable at first glance. However, they snap together easily and stay together. Snap Ships aren’t just built to look at, they are meant for kids to play with them. The blocks do not rotate once they are snapped together. However, you can rotate them before you snap them together so they connect with 45 degree rotational offset which allows for some unique designs. Once you have all the blocks forming the general shape of the ship you are building, it is time to add the decorations. Snap Ships as a construction toy is great for STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) development as they teach kids to follow steps, they encourage free play when finished, and also allow their creative minds to develop when kids build their own creations. There are 10 Snap Ships sets at various price points, from stocking filler to large, special birthday gifts. The two factions in the Snap Ships world also offer to unique looking craft build styles while still being 100% interchangeable with one another to make for truly creative craft creation.  There is also a corresponding Snap Ships app which allows users to generate ships in the real world through AR (augmented reality), explore the functions and various alternative build instructions for each ship, as well as allowing users to take a Snap Ship for a virtual flight. Each Snap Ships set contain its own cockpit, weapon system and UJU tech which is unique to that set. This makes the range highly collectible and with all parts being interchangeable there is no shortage of unique build opportunities and for your child’s imagination to take flight. After completing building the base ship you will find left over pieces which are needed for one of the other builds included in the set. This means that even the various builds inside of the same set is unique to one another. Snap Ships are available nationwide from Toy Kingdom, Hamleys and C.N.A. as well as online from Takealot and other fine retailers.

How to tame your baby hairs

There’s nothing like spending hours styling or treating your hair to perfection, only to have the rebellious little hairs along your hairline misbehave and stick up or out, ruining your look. Those fine, wispy strands of hair located along your hairline are referred to as “baby hair” or “edges,” and one of the biggest problems is that they are usually too short to clip back, and too unruly to let loose.  This is where edge styling comes in. Edge styling is not a new concept, and can be traced back to the 1920s, when entertainer Josephine Baker was known for her spit curls. Originally, edge styling was done to tame baby hairs, but today it is often done to make a statement and form part of one’s hairstyle. There are endless ways to style your edges: you can swoop them to the side, slick them down or gel them over. You can even create a swirl using a swoop motion – we’ve seen a number of A-list celebs like Alicia Keys and Jennifer Lopez pull off this look! To combat unruly edges, or help you achieve your desired look, hair care brands have developed special edge control hair products that help you secure your edges into place. These are designed to offer ultra-hold, while adding shine to the hair.  Edge control products There are two types of edge control products: oil-based and water-based. Oil-based products are often more effective on curly hair, but you may need to try both to find a perfect match. It’s important to use an alcohol-free formula, and if you can use a product with castor oil in the ingredients, you’re on to a winner, as it helps control frizz.  Cantu Extra Hold Edge Gel (R139.95) conditions and smooths frizz and flyaway hair for shiny, sleek styles with a long-lasting, flake-free hold. Made with pure shea butter and formulated without harsh ingredients, this extra hold gel is perfect for polished, smooth styles and ponytails. The right tool Whether you are looking to style your baby hairs, or brush them down, a toothbrush, fine tooth comb or mascara wand are the best tools you can use. They’ll give you the precision you need to flatten each strand of hair, plus they’ll help you flatten the desired baby hair without pulling your longer strands into the mix. The Evolve Triple Edge Styler (R119.95) is brush/comb combination to allow for polishing and grooming edges gently and a rat tail for parting hair. The rat tail tip end creates sharp parts and prevents frizz. For natural, relaxed, and braided/protective styles. Protect against breakage In many cases, baby hairs are fragile and tend to be dry, so you’ll need to nourish them to prevent breakage and further damage. Firstly, avoid heat styling them, as far as possible. Secondly, apply a hydrating and nourishing hair care product regularly. Try Cantu Shea Butter Tea Tree & Jojoba Hair & Scalp Oil (R169.99). It conditions the scalp to support healthy hair growth and uses the power of some of nature’s most moisturising oils to help protect dry and damaged hair from breakage. You may also want to invest in satin pillowcases or a satin bonnet to wear while you sleep. Satin helps hair retain moisture, while reducing frizz and breakage. Evolve’s Sunset Bonnet (R89.95) made from high quality satin, helps protect your hair as well as maintain its moisture.  Getting started Edge styling may take some practice, and the key to not overdoing it, is to ensure you don’t force your hair into positions that isn’t natural. Make sure your hair is in its natural state before you start, and take a good look in the mirror. You’ll notice some thin hairs along your hairline that grow forward and lie flat against your skin. These are the hairs you want to focus on neatening / styling. Shape or style your edges with your preferred product and tool, and then use a diffuser to dry the baby hairs in place. If you prefer, you can also secure them in place by using a scarf and wait until it is dry before removing it.   Edge styling may seem straight forward, but mastering it requires practice. There are so many styles and looks you could try, that you may need to play around and experiment before you find the perfect look for you.

How do I help my child cope with exam stress?

Exam time is usually a dreaded and stressful period for parents and children alike, but a little support and motivation can go a long way in reducing stress levels. Here are some guidelines of what you can do to make life a bit easier on your child (and in effect you too!): Create a consistent study environment.  According to parentinfo.org it’s best to set up a study corner that is comfortable and inviting to work in, with as few distractions as possible. Everything should be close at hand so they don’t have to spend time searching for things like highlighters, post it notes, paper, etc. Keep communication open. It’s important to show that you are interested in your child’s studies.  Ask them how they are doing, do they need any help, how did the exam go. Sometimes a child just needs to vent or know you care about their well-being. Encourage relaxation and taking part in other activities to unwind, like exercising, listening to music, painting and interacting with friends. These can aid significantly in stress management. When it comes to studying and breaks the Pomodoro Technique is the most effective in the world. Study for 25 minutes with 5 minute breaks in-between each study session. After four cycles of 25 minute studies, take a longer 30-minute break.  Help your child stay focused with following a well-structured study schedule. According to brainbuxa.com discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishment.  It’s important to enforce restrictions, but don’t micro-manage. Show your child that you trust him/her enough to take responsibility. If your child prefers being quizzed to prep for exams, put in the effort and make it a time of bonding rather than a time of frustration. Stay calm, do flash cards and reward accomplishments by sneaking in a favourite snack. Ensure that your child eats healthy and gets enough sleep.  These are very important factors for the brain to recharge and function properly, especially during exam time. Always remember to use words of encouragement. Whether the exam went well or not. Help your child to stay positive. Most children are less worried about the exam itself than about disappointing their parents or losing the respect of their fellow classmates if they do badly.  So if it didn’t go well, instead of dwelling on the mistakes, which they cannot change, rather help them relax and prepare for the next exam. “The role of the parent is very important in this online teaching journey. Parents should create and promote a positive learning environment for the student.  Parents should also encourage the student to follow a routine to stay focussed and to develop responsibility, self-discipline and independence. Our teachers, student mentors and tutors all have one goal in mind and that is to see our students succeed and prosper,” says Belinda van der Westhuizen, Wingu-Academy’s Director of Education and Assessments. “Most importantly, celebrate your child’s accomplishments and enjoy the journey with him/her.”

SACAP TEACHERS’ WEBINAR SPOTLIGHTS TEEN IDENTITY AND SOCIAL MEDIA

When it comes to social media and the youth, there’s no shortage of dire warnings and cautionary tales.  Parents and teachers are all but hard-wired to view social media through the lens of threats and risks, and there’s little to provide balance and insights into how our teens can and do use social media and internet platforms for good. Social Media and Adolescent Identity is the topic for an upcoming SACAP (South African College of Applied Psychology) Teachers Webinar which will be hosted by Academic Dean and Counselling Psychologist, Dr Jaclyn Lotter.  The free, one-hour webinar, to be held on Saturday, 18 September from 10h00 to 11h00 invites South African teachers to join the conversation and gain a deeper understanding into the appeal of social media, and the role it can play in supporting teens as they navigate their way towards adulthood. Dr Lotter says, “When we don’t fully understand something new and how it is being used, we have a fear-based response.  It may seem quaint nowadays, but in the times of mass installation of telephone networks, there was a backlash at the potential threats this new technology could unleash on society, especially our vulnerable youth.  Of course, there are risks, and awareness is so important.  On the other hand, millions of young people are engaged safely over social media, and there are benefits too.  As teachers understand this, they become far more effective at helping their teen students use social media in safe and responsible ways.” Dr Lotter points out that social media opens up a myriad of spaces for adolescents to find diverse communities where they can test out aspects of their burgeoning identities with minimal risks.  For instance, teens grappling with non-heteronormative identities can connect to guidance and support that simply may not be available to them in person.  “It also doesn’t necessarily have to be that serious,” says Dr Lotter, “Sometimes, young people want to explore sub-genres of music or youth activist causes or counter-cultural arts in safe, maybe non-committal ways as they build their identities.  There’s far greater scope for this via the internet and social media.” The webinar will also explore the concept of digital citizenship which is very much part of the younger generations’ lives but did not exist in the youth of teachers and parents. Dr Lotter says, “Here we are talking about a set of skills including critical thinking, and a range of behaviours that help teens navigate the digital world in safe and wise ways.  We’ll be highlighting the conversations that can happen in homes and classrooms that promote the development of these skills and empower our young generations because we can offer them meaningful guidelines about how to get the best and give their best through their online activity.” Teachers who join the free SACAP webinar will benefit from insights and practical tips including: Understanding media and social media literacy and how to include this learning in conversations with teens; Developing school social media policies that protect teens while also promoting development; Assisting teens in leveraging social media for positive impact such as the Greta Thunberg effect when it comes to responsible social activism; And, promoting mindfulness around social media use and screen time habits Join SACAP to explore this thought-provoking theme by registering here for free or go to www.sacap.edu.za/events/ Teacher’s Webinar – Social Media and Adolescent Identity Saturday, 18 September 10h00 to 11h00

Bonitas – innovation, life stages and quality care

Urban living’s impact on our wellness

South Africa is urbanising rapidly: 63% of South Africans are already living in urban areas.  Stats indicate this will rise to 71% by 2030 and by 2050, eight in 10 people will be living in urban areas. While it is unavoidable that people migrate to cities for work, it does have a negative effect on people’s health. The most significant effect is the increase in non-communicable or lifestyle diseases.  Dr Morgan Mkhatshwa,Head of Operations at Bonitas Medical Fund, says that the main problems associated with changes in lifestyle and behaviour, due to urbanisation, are: Increased alcohol and tobacco use Lack of exercise.  Cities are often over-populated, there are too few public spaces for physical activity and many residents have to use public or private transport because of long commutes to work, schools and amenities Poor nutrition. Changes in diet include more processed and refined food, an increase in high-fat and high-sugar diets, less fruit and vegetables, less complex carbohydrates and fibre Socio-economic factors There is an increasing recognition of the importance of social, economic and physical environments as determinants of health and well-being. Unfortunately, the poorest people living in under-serviced inner city areas or informal settlements are the most exposed to unhealthy urban environments. With urbanisation, the double burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) will increase if no effective health systems and policies are put in place to prevent, detect and treat communicable and non-communicable diseases. ‘Our analysis of lifestyle diseases indicate that hypertension is the most prevalent non-communicable disease, followed by high cholesterol and diabetes Type 2. Obesity, high cholesterol, diabetes Type 2 and hypertension are all symptoms of metabolic syndrome, caused by poor nutrition and a sedentary lifestyle. ‘The science around nutrition has long been problematic. Published results have varying conclusions but concur that highly processed and food with high sugar and “bad fat” content should be avoided. ‘Also, in the top seven conditions are susceptibility to blood clotting, asthma, underactive thyroid and depression,’ says Dr Mkhatshwa.  Asthma is a respiratory condition most often caused by pollution or other irritants in the environment and mental health conditions can also be a consequence of urban living. Oncology is also becoming more and more prevalent. The number of Bonitas members with cancer has more than doubled since 2016. Air pollution Motor vehicle, industry and domestic fuel use increases air pollution which is responsible for a range of lung and respiratory diseases, heart conditions and cancers. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and asthma are two of the most prevalent respiratory diseases.  ‘We have the expertise to respond to these risks and lifestyle diseases by providing comprehensive, integrated care, every step of the way,’ explains Dr Mkhatshwa. ‘And, through our Managed Care programme, we help equip our members to take responsibility for their health by providing information and education, encouraging wellness, paying for preventative care and providing cover for medical costs incurred.  However, more needs to be done and we advocate collaboration with public health authorities to educate and encourage South Africans to look after their health.’ Covid-19 and NCDs It is common knowledge that Covid-19 and non-communicable diseases such as hypertension and diabetes interact to create a perfect storm. The pandemic has made people more aware of having to take responsibility for their health and preventing or managing chronic disease optimally. ‘Co-morbidities have an impact on those who contract Covid-19 and there is possibly a synergistic issue with the coronavirus and these co-morbidities that exacerbates the prognosis and burden of disease.’  Managed Care ‘Achieving good patient health outcomes is the fundamental purpose of healthcare,’ says Dr Mkhatshwa. ‘Measuring, reporting and comparing outcomes is perhaps the most important step towards unlocking rapid outcome improvement and making better choices.   ‘Managed Care is a critical component and improves quality of care and we know that proactive intervention and working with members to prevent or control lifestyle diseases is the only way forward. Because when ‘I’ becomes ‘we,’ illness can become wellness.’ The GP is pivotal  We believe there needs to be coordination of care and that members should be encouraged to nominate a General Practitioner as the first port of call for all health care needs, who can refer to a specialist or auxiliary provider as the need arises. This eliminates inefficiencies caused by ‘doctor hopping.’ ‘To tackle the rising burden of disease, we need medical schemes to work together with public health authorities, particularly in the context of the challenges of urbanisation, lifestyle diseases and the Covid-19 pandemic.’

What to do if your child’s educational needs changed over the past year

Over the past year and a half, the pandemic threw the educational journeys of learners into disarray. Many schools responded with mitigation measures that resulted in a variety of impacts and outcomes on learners. At the same time, the educational needs of many learners have also changed. Learners that seemed to be in the right place and on the right track at the start of the year are now finding that this may no longer be the case. As parents start considering their children’s educational options for next year, they must be aware of a variety of different offerings which may provide a better fit for their children’s current situation and needs. Education experts say that there are options available to learners requiring more tailored or niche offerings or environments. “Many parents often do not consider the idea that they have alternative choices instead of remaining in an environment that no longer serves their children to the degree it did before,” says Desiree Hugo, Academic Head at ADvTECH Schools, SA’s leading private education provider. She says the past year and a half has taken a tremendous toll on parents and students in various ways, and that many students who performed well and were doing well emotionally and developmentally before, are now struggling, necessitating the consideration of alternative approaches or specialist interventions. Dr Jacques Mostert, Academic Manager at Abbotts College, says whereas a child’s school and academic experience may have been suitable for them and made sense before, that may no longer be the case. “It could be that the environment changed because of the last year’s experiences, that the needs of your child have changed, or both. Where learners are no longer rising to their potential, particularly in the wake of observations over the past six months, and where mid-year reports indicate there are areas requiring attention, parents should review the existing conditions and, if need be, make changes in consultation with professionals,” Dr Mostert says. He says some learners may require smaller class sizes with more individual attention, a learning environment with a more rounded approach, mental and emotional health assistance, a less structured setting, or specialist support to ensure they overcome challenges and realise their potential in future. But making a move requires an understanding of what alternatives are on offer, he says. ASSISTED LEARNING Dr Greg Pienaar, Principal at The Bridge, South Africa’s leading assisted learning school, says that over the past year, parents may have noticed their children present with needs not seen before, such as ADHD, ADD, dyslexia, mild autism, or anxiety. Children also might have been through illness or trauma which affected their academic progress. “Many children of average and above-average intelligence face these kinds of challenges and require an environment with an understanding of and response to neurodiversity. Few mainstream schools, especially in the current environment, are in a position to provide the focused yet comprehensive support these learners require to perform to the best of their ability and become confident, empowered and self-actualised,” he says. “So if you have noticed or have had confirmed challenges that would require therapy, coaching, greater individual attention or the like, it is worth considering a school which will help your child deal with and overcome these challenges while continuing their academic journey.” ONLINE SCHOOL Some learners were fortunate enough to attend schools that could provide a high-quality online offering during lockdowns and continue the curriculum without interruption. Most of them were happy to return to in-person schooling when the time came. Some realised that the online learning environment was more suitable to their personality and needs and may now be considering a permanent move to online homeschooling. The consideration of online homeschooling has also become a reality for many families reviewing their futures and who may be considering a move elsewhere but would like to keep their child’s routine intact should circumstances change. “If you are considering homeschooling, you must do your homework thoroughly before choosing a curriculum provider, as the quality of offering varies substantially across the board, and so do outcomes,” says Colin Northmore, Principal at Evolve Online School. “Of course, it is non-negotiable that parents investigate the registration and accreditation status of an institution. That is not enough, however, as a school must also be able to show that it can provide the highest quality of academic excellence online, while supporting the integrated development of a child through providing ample interaction with peers and educators,” he says. Online learning that merely provides a paper-behind-glass style curriculum makes it extremely difficult for students, especially young ones, to get deeply involved in and excited about their learning journey. “So when deciding on an online homeschool offering, prospective parents must enquire about the efficiency of the technology and the logistics of an offering, as well as whether they will have access to qualified educators to step in and assist them should the need arise,” Northmore says. NON-TRADITIONAL SCHOOLS Dr Mostert says setting out on a new path may mean simply allowing a learner to continue within a differently structured and more nurturing environment. “If things are not going well for a learner, and parents are starting to get concerned about their current trajectory, it might be worth looking for a high school that will allow a learner to continue within a setting focused on progressive academic improvement. “Every student can develop and achieve academic success, but if you are feeling overwhelmed and in a rut, it is not easy to lift yourself out of this space or even to see the way forward. For these students, an environment that focuses on progressive academic improvement and individual support, instead of strict rules related to, for example, hair and uniform regulations, can mean the difference between continued sadness and success.” This time of year, in general, is an excellent time to review the educational options for the year ahead after reviewing progress and development over the previous six months. In 2021, that is more true than ever, says Hugo. “As we have

MONEY LESSONS FOR LITTLE ONES FROM HOUSE KOLISI

7 year-old Nic Kolisi is saving for a car. Not just a remote control one; a real car as well! Although, having done the maths with mom, Rachel Kolisi, on how long he’ll need to save for him to reach his R100 000 target, he’s now having a slight crisis in confidence and focusing on the remote control one instead. The Kolisi family has been using the Sanlam Savings Jar app to get the kids to set goals and save for these. Rachel Kolisi says it’s never too soon for little people to learn these lessons. There’s a rule in House Kolisi. If you don’t work, you don’t earn. Kolisi says she knows that life is crazy, but it’s critical to schedule time to talk money with children. “Time is going and kids keep growing; the sooner they’re conscious of finances and spending, the better! Even if you just spend an hour a week talking about what they’re saving for and how, it makes a difference. I’ve found the Sanlam Savings Jar app really incredible for this. It helps parents have these conversations and it’s so interactive and fun for the kids as well.” Money talk is tough in our times Kolisi says that teaching kids about finances is a different ballgame today. “We used to get pocket money in our hands. Now, it gets deposited into a bank and you’re working with EFTs and cards… it’s much tougher to teach children the value of money. I’d get R5 a week, which used to be enough to buy a Chelsea bun back in the day. These days, it’s totally different. Which is why I think talking about money is more important than ever. It’s scary to see how few children – even adults – have any kind of financial savvy. Talking about money as a family  Kolisi says that the family talks about money and sets shared financial goals often, “We’re underway with a big move and there’s a lot of financial change in that. So, we’ve had to sit down and have a conversation about what the next couple of year’s looks like. We’re in our thirties, but we’re responsible for four children. One of our kids is changing schools and our older one is going into a hostel, which is another expense. So, every year we look at our income and expenses to make sure we’re always on track. “Siya and I both grew up in financially-strapped homes and we never wanted finances to be an issue. I do believe that finances can be a breaking point for a lot of relationships and it’s scary to me that money can have such a toll on people. I think, often, it’s just a lack of knowledge, which really comes back to the fact that if you do have financial knowledge, it’s important to share it and pass it on to your kids. There’s a lot on the line for us and Siya’s career is short as well. So, that’s also something we take into consideration on a yearly basis.” Practical ways to teach children finance lessons Kolisi takes the children grocery shopping and they compare the prices and look for the cheapest brands and deals. “We compare the weight of the products and the value we’ll get from buying them. The kids help me a lot with the groceries, and I try and let them be independent with the choices they make. I like to focus on things they eat daily, so they understand the value of the money that’s spent on these products. She says the Sanlam Savings Jar app has been a great way to start conversations and build excitement around saving. “As soon as we downloaded the app, Nic pulled out every money box he’s ever had, and we were counting all the 10c and 5c to put towards his goal. We managed to grow his dragon to adult size for his remote-control car (the more coins saved, the bigger the dragon grows). “Then we also set a goal to help someone else, which I think brings another important conversation up about how you can have goals for yourself, but how are you thinking about others? So many important conversations came from the app; I think the fact that it brings about a discussion between a child and parent is the most important thing.” Work to earn Kolisi says, “We have the non-negotiable daily chores like doing dishes, making the bed, etc. Then we have what we call the ‘extras’. The older kids know that when they want money to go out or whatever, they’ll tell us how much they need and then we give them the list of extra chores to earn the money. Nic has done a good car clean! We have a running list of things like picking up the dog poop, sorting the Tupperware in the cupboards, cleaning the bathrooms… “I believe the reason I work as hard as I do is because it’s stuck in my mind you cannot earn money without working. And I think the sooner a child understands that the better. Anything can change at any moment, but you can always manage because financial knowledge can never be taken away.” Realness and reward It’s also important to make money talk fun. “It can be super daunting, especially for teenagers, when you start talking about how much their education is going to cost. Then if they get a job, how much rent will cost, plus petrol, food, and all of these things. So, I think it’s important to use things like the Sanlam Savings Jar app to open up these difficult conversations in a fun way.” Lastly, it’s important that the conversations are continuous. “Kezzie doesn’t really care about goals yet. Nic is just starting to. Then you have my teenagers who want to go to parties and buy their friends gifts. Then it’s about going into adulthood and starting university and first jobs. Benefits of a Gua Sha & Roller and How To Use Them

Did you know that Gua sha and facial rolling aren’t just recent Instagram beauty hacks. Gua sha is an ancient practice evolved from Traditional Chinese Medicine which has been used for thousands of years! Are you keen to try these iconic beauty tools yourself? We discuss their benefits, how to use them and where to get them!  Gua Sha and Its Benefits Gua sha literally translates to stroking. Gua sha is used to stimulate blood flow and movement through the body. Its uses are many, but it’s generally used to decrease pain and tension in the muscles. In the last few years, the beauty community has discovered that the gua sha provides many benefits for facial work. The gua sha assists in: Increased facial lymphatic drainage (a workout for our face? Yes please!) Facial muscle tension relief (goodbye sore muscles)  Decreased fine lines and wrinkles (woooohoo, bring on youthful skin!) How to use Gua Sha:  1) Always move in the direction of your lymph nodes: scrape from the inside of your face to the outsides scrape up and down the neck scrape to the outsides of the forehead scrape from the middle of your chin towards the bottom of your ear scrape your eyebrows up towards your temple 2) Make sure there’s either some oil or serum on your face and begin your gua sha routine for at least 5 minutes or longer. 3) Apply light pressure with the gua sha but do not overexert. The lymphatic system is stimulated through light stroking so you do not need to push the tool with too much pressure into the face. If you push too hard you may cause bruising or exacerbate inflammation. Ouch!  4) Store your tool in the fridge, if you can. The cool touch of the stone can help decrease redness. 5) ALWAYS clean your gua sha to prevent bacteria build up! How to use Gua Sha for Specific Body Parts: AROUND EYES Work from the inside out TEMPLE Work upwards BACK Work downwards LEGS Work upwards Facial Roller and Its Benefits So what’s up with facial rolling and why is everyone so obsessed with it? Put simply, jade rolling is actually a type of gua sha! The facial roller is a tool that allows for easier usage of the gua on yourself. It allows for easier rolling and stimulation of the lymphatic system without having to stare in the mirror while you do it (but that’s part of the fun right?). The facial roller assists in: reduced redness and scarring muscle pain relief  potentially reduces signs of aging How to use Facial Roller for Specific Body Parts: FOREHEAD:  Work the roller slowly from the centre of your forehead towards your hairline and the sides of your forehead towards the temples EYES:  Sweep the roller across your eyelids, gradually working your way towards the temples. EYEBROWS: Sweep the roller from the arch of your eyebrows up towards your hairline NOSE: Sweep the roller along the bridge of the nose upwards towards the forehead CHEEKS:  Using the wider end of the roller, follow your cheek contour towards your ears. Glenoaks Remedial and Special Needs School

OAK HOUSE VOCATIONAL ACADEMY FOR SPECIAL NEEDS LEARNERS

Glenoaks is a private remedial and special needs school in Johannesburg that unleashes potential!  We nurture academic, functional, social and emotional growth for learners and personalise support according to the needs and strengths of each learner. We create a nurturing and inclusive environment for our learners which is supported by our dedicated, passionate and professional team. We achieve this through innovative adaptation, accommodation, differentiation and individualisation for each learner. Oak House Vocational Academy, part of Glenoaks School is aimed at learners between the ages of 12 and 18 who have special needs and the potential to eventually be more independent and enter the open labour market.  What the future holds for learners with special needs  Learners in South Africa with special needs experience significant barriers in terms of their education and future prospects as adults. Many of these learners will not achieve a Grade equivalent education, which in turn prevents them from entering tertiary institutions or the workplace. This can be a difficult fact for parents to accept considering that society still perceives academic excellence as the ultimate achievement and determinant of success.  At Glenoaks we believe that some learners are academically inclined, and others are functionally or practically inclined, which is simply an indication that a different way of learning is needed, and that more practical outcomes can result in the kind of success that is required for life and for many jobs. We believe in unleashing a learner’s potential, encouraging them to persevere through the challenges and focus on the possibilities! Many parents comment that our curriculum should be taught in all schools to all children because life and work skills are critical for survival, and seriously lacking in learners who are leaving the traditional school system. Oak House Vocational Academy Oak House Vocational Academy was conceived from the need to provide an appropriate setting for specific learners with special needs from our school, and from the broader community, whose abilities and needs are not met in an academic setting. After intense research and planning both locally and abroad, a blueprint was formulated for our vocational academy – highly particular, uniquely crafted and finely tuned to Glenoaks’ vision. Our Curriculum Life Skills Our students are taught a creatively crafted curriculum which includes functional English and Maths, social skills; business skills; entrepreneurship; IT and admin skills; world knowledge; home management; hospitality; gardening; crafts and enterprise. Learning across subject areas is practical and integrated, so that learners understand the purpose of the skill, can transfer that skill to other tasks, and experience an end goal which is tangible. When learners can see and participate in a process from start to finish, they tend to retain skills far better, they get excited about learning and start demonstrating more independence and maturity at home.    An example of this approach is that learners will create a shopping list for a recipe; they will learn to purchase those items from a shop and understand the costs; they will plant and harvest some ingredients; make the recipe, sell the food to customers, and explore concepts such as profit and loss. This holistic style has exposed learners to relevant skills in English; budgeting and money management; shopping; growing produce; food preparation; packaging; admin (stock take, order forms); teamwork; customer service; understanding deadlines and appropriate social skills for different environments. Work experience Oak House Academy learners are exposed to the concept of work from the beginning of their journey with us. Younger learners participate in internal contract or project based work, and older learners benefit from external work experience placements aligned to their strengths, abilities, and areas of interest, culminating in years of work experience by the time they graduate. All learners gain the skills required for entry level jobs, and focus on critical social skills, appropriate behaviours and attitudes required in the workplace. Learners in the external work experience program are gaining exposure to a variety of industries and businesses including retail; IT; hairdressing; production line; garden nurseries; schools; sport; robotics and many more. If further training or employment opportunities exist for a graduate, those are facilitated and supported by Oak House Vocational Academy. In 2019 the first group of learners graduated from the Academy and successfully commenced with further training, part time or permanent employment. Here are just a few of our very capable learners at work experience. These young men and ladies, who would inevitably have very limited opportunities to gain meaningful employment, are using their strengths to add value to their work experience sites, learn important workplace skills, explore their strengths and change perceptions about people with special needs in the workplace. Keila is gaining experience with the merchandising team at Moishes unpacking stock, restocking and organising shelves, packing orders for customers and pricing stock. Qhawe is doing work experience at Lesco on the production line, assembling various electrical products for large retailers. James is hosted by Tumbling Tigerz where he assists the coaches to set up and pack away equipment for obstacle courses, demonstrates activities to the children, and encourages them during sessions.  On her work experience days, Sabrina assists the operators at Blue Door Hair Salon to clean, straighten and dry foils. She folds towels and cleans basins, brushes and the hairdresser’s work stations. Jack is a tech wizard and is gaining experience at Stem Dynamics, a robotics company. He is learning programing and coding and using resistors and transformers to build working circuits. He also assists younger students in their weekly coding lessons. Khotso has an artistic flair and loves his work experience at Greens Vintage Lane where he uses special paint techniques to assist with refurbishing small pieces of furniture and décor items which are sold in their shop. Aligning with local and international standards / programs From 2022 the Academy will integrate the ASDAN programs and courses into the curriculum. ASDAN is a UK based organisation offering a variety of accessible and practical courses for learners with special needs focusing on personal, independent living and employability

How can parents encourage entrepreneurship at home?

It has become increasingly important for children to hone their entrepreneurship skills, not just in the classroom, but especially at home.  It’s important for parents to encourage their children to succeed and by applying the following guidelines by Sue Scheff, author and parent advocate, it’s easier than you think! Kids earn an allowance for chores, not for existing: Instil a good work ethic in your children by requiring that they earn their allowance. Emptying the dishwasher, mowing the lawn, and washing the family dog are all ways that kids can learn how to earn money. Take it a step further by encouraging them to do similar tasks for neighbours as a way to earn additional money. Create a bank account for your child:  Lay the foundation for earning money by giving it a place to go. When your child earns money, have fun helping your kids do the math and figure out how much they’ve put away in the bank for all their hard work. Share opportunities for extra earning: Teach your children that going above and beyond leads to increased earning. Give them the opportunity to do more difficult chores that go above what they’re normally expected to do. Encourage good personal finance skills: Kids begging for items at the store might be annoying, but it’s a teachable moment. When your child asks for something that’s out of budget or not really necessary, make it a goal to earn enough money to buy it. Encourage your child to come up with ideas on how to buy it themselves. Encourage them to follow their ideas: Whether your kids want to start a blog or sell vegetables from your garden, give them your time and encouragement. Let them learn by doing, and find opportunities for lessons along the way. Ask them to consider how they’ll fund their start-up, where to get supplies, how much to charge, how to find their customers, and of course, what to do with the money they earn. You should of course set some limitations for time, legality, and safety, but be open to let your kids explore their own ideas. Allow them to fail, and turn failures into learning moments. Teach good teamwork: Rarely do entrepreneurs succeed completely independently. Even if they’re in business alone, they’re networking, getting others interested, and meeting with people that can help get their business off the ground. Learning how to work with others is essential for success, so be sure to encourage group work in school, in your home, and beyond. Encourage team sports: Team sports are a great way to teach kids to work with others, and they’re also great for learning business lessons. Chances are, they won’t win every game, but the setbacks and hard work that are a part of playing sports can teach kids how to work toward success. Be available: Every great entrepreneur needs a mentor, and for your kids, you are that person. Although you should encourage your child to operate independently, always be there to answer questions or offer helpful suggestions. If you don’t know how to solve a problem, learn how to do it together. Teach your kids to be self-starters: Doing what they’re told is easy for most kids. Asking them to complete certain chores is simple and straightforward. But if you want them to start thinking creatively, encourage their initiative. Ask them to come up with ideas for chores that need to be done, or encourage them to plan a meal and cook for the family once a week. Encourage adventure and observational skills: Some of the best entrepreneurs found success simply by filling a need that no one else even knew existed. The world is full of business opportunities, if only we could notice them. Parents can help their children learn to recognize these types of opportunities by developing observation and creativity. Walk around your neighbourhood with your kids and consider which needs are not being met. Do you have neighbours that need lawn care? Businesses that need a website? Teach kids to recognize and anticipate the needs of others. Teach problem-solving: Entrepreneurship can be a bumpy road full of obstacles and challenges to overcome, even for the best-laid plans. Show your children that problems are just solutions that have not been solved yet. Give them small challenges to overcome, and nudge them in the right direction to find a solution. Play business games: Many games exist to teach kids the basics of business. Make learning about entrepreneurship fun by engaging your children in these games. Flexibility in the workplace: know your stuff

If there’s been one silver lining to the dreaded dark cloud that is Covid-19, it’s the shift to a more widely accepted attitude towards flexible work situations. Families are fluid. They function best with a bit of flexibility and if your job can offer that, there’s never been a better time to ask for a permanent shift towards workplace flexibility.  Before you do, make sure you’re well educated in the different types of workplace flexibility which are on offer. Remote work? Flexible work hours? Hybrid? Know your stuff so you can be sure what the perfect fit will be for both your job and your family.  Two main types of flexibility Since the first lockdown, the term ‘flexibility’ has become a bit of a buzzword, but it can mean different things to different people, jobs and companies. To break it down, there are only two main types of flexibility. The first is workplace flexibility which is otherwise known as working from home or remote work. The second is flexible work hours, which can range from mornings-only to set hours per week or month. As you can see, one position could offer both flexible work hours and workplace flexibility and both offer a host of benefits for not only employees but companies as well.  But wait! There’s more!  Don’t forget about hybrid flexibility, whichfalls under workplace flexibility. Why socialising your child is important

With the onset of Covid-19 and the subsequent lockdowns, social distancing has become the new norm. While this is essential to protect ourselves and those we love, it has had a noted impact on our children. Never has the importance of children socialising and its benefits been more highlighted than in the past year when they have not been able to.  However, with the adoption of Covid-19 best practises, safely socialising our children is important for their development. According to Child Psychologists, here are some of the top reasons why your young child should be safely socialising. Developing language skills in children Socialising from a young age helps children develop language skills and increase future vocabulary. It also helps them learn what the appropriate things to say are in different situations. Developing empathy in children Having your child interacting with others will assist them in developing empathy. The ability to be kind, considerate and thoughtful of how others are feeling is possibly one of the most essential components of someone’s Emotional Intelligence. The earlier these skills are learned and used, the better. Developing self-esteem in children With socialisation comes an improved and developed self-esteem. This is because when children learn to make connections at a young age, their ability to make friends as they grow older will directly improve how they feel about themselves. Also, having someone other than a parent give them praise is an important boost at any age. Developing conflict resolution in children Having your child play out different scenarios with other children will assist them in learning how best to resolve conflicts in a peaceful manner. If possible, it is ideal for this skill to already be developing before children start school. Developing happiness in children Besides spending time with other kids being fun, studies show that socialisation also floods our child’s brain with oxytocin – better known as the love hormone. Research also indicates that socialisation improves your child’s memory and brain recall function. Choosing a safe environment that has Covid-19 safety protocols for your child, and you, to interact with others will ensure they are getting the socialisation they need along with all its benefits. Toptots Parent and Child Workshop is a safe place to do just that – find a branch near you to register.

Breast feeding ups and downs

It might surprise you that breast feeding has many ups and downs, this is by design. If you are wondering if you can breast feed, well the answer is yes you can. Learn as much as you can about breast feeding while you are still pregnant. Just as with anything in life the more you learn and prepare the better equipped you will be once your baby comes.  Fortunately, there has been an increase in the amount of antenatal online classes or face to face workshops for pregnant women and couples.  These are great to help you prepare for birthing and care for your baby once born. Breast feeding focused classes are so important to prepare you. If you think about it, it might be the most important topic as you will be feeding from day one and often throughout the day. My Breastpump has compiled a list of 10 important facts to know about breast feeding: 1.You will have milk During your pregnancy your body has grown your baby/babies and will continue to be able to look after and supply nutrients for them for the first 6 months of life. This is amazing that your body will continue to be able to support your baby’s growth without any other food. After the first 6 months your baby will also need solids.   2.Your body starts to make milk in your 2nd trimester In preparation for your baby’s arrival your body starts to make a very small amount of milk in your 2nd trimester. This is your first milk, and it is called colostrum. Colostrum is a specialized milk that is designed to transition your baby from the womb onto the more mature milk as your baby learns how to feed. It is very high in nutrients, mineral, antibodies and surprisingly is only found in small amounts. This very precious milk is present in the pregnancy and the first few days after birth. Thereafter your milk transitions to a mature milk.  3.Hormones are responsible for milk production There are a few different hormones that are involved in the production of breast milk. The most important 2 are oxytocin and prolactin. Oxytocin is responsible for the squeezing of your milk grands, that are found deep inside your breast. This helps to push the milk from inside your breast towards your nipple. Prolactin is responsible for making your breast milk.  Both hormones are produced by your brain when your brain feels stimulation at your breast. This can be cause by a baby suckling, hand expression, or use of a breast pump.  4.Understanding supply and demand is essential to successful breast feeding The key to understanding how breast milk is made is that you need to stimulate the breast to increase the body’s hormone level. The more stimulation that you breast experiences the more hormones and thus more milk. This is so important in the first few weeks and even more important in the first few days. By feeding your baby on demand helps your body to increase the amount of milk that it is making for your baby’s needs.  5.Your body does not waste Making breast milk takes up energy and valuable nutrients, so it only makes sense that your body would not want to waste a single drop. Therefore your body actually makes the most amount of breast milk while your baby feeds. In-between feeds your breasts will make small amounts of breast milk and this is they you may start to feel a bit full before your next feed. Most of the breast milk is made after the breast has been stimulated. It may take the body a minute or two for the prolactin level to increase and start to make lots of milk, but once it starts it will make as much milk as your baby needs.  Your body will not continue to make thee large amounts without the stimulation at the breast because then you would end up leaking the whole time and what a waste of breast milk that would be!  6.Natural flow of breast milk in your first week In the first few days after the birth, the first milk, Colostrum, is found in small amounts. This is because Colostum is fully loaded with energy, nutrients, and antibodies. In fact, 5ml of it has the same energy content as 30ml of mature breast milk. Your baby’s stomach is also very small and it can only take a few mls of breast milk at a time. These are just two reasons why your body starts off with small amounts of breast milk. It is by design to help your baby learn to breast feed and also because your baby does not need more.  After a few days you will notice that your breasts are starting to feel fuller and that they may even get a bit hard. This is a great sign as it means that your mature breast milk is starting to be made. Continue to feed on demand and your body will start to regulate the correct amount of milk for your baby. 7.Natural flow of mature breast milk After about a week or two your breast may start to feel softer and less full. This is totally normal and is a fantastic sign that your breasts are now able to regulate how much milk your baby needs.  8.Deep latch is key A deep latch is so important to a comfortable breast feed and to make sure that your baby can get enough milk. The deep latch helps you to stimulate your breasts to trigger your hormones to make milk while not causing any trauma to your nipples. Many breast-feeding issues stem from not having a deep enough latch.  9.Find a support system  Support, Support, support is key to being a mom and one of the most important parts of breast feeding. Find a friend or family member that has been successful at breast feeding and ask them questions: look for online breast feeding

PCOS Awareness with Salome this September

September is international PCOS Awareness Month and Salome is determined to do their bit in creating awareness & empowering women with the option of a naturally based solution to this common hormonal disorder. An estimated 8 – 13% of women suffer from Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) that involves reproductive, cosmetic and metabolic problems. The long-term effects of this condition, if not diagnosed and treated early, are infertility due to ovarian dysfunction, as well as the risk of developing diabetes, cardiac problems linked to hypertension, sleeping problems and high cholesterol. Common symptoms and diagnosis Symptoms of PCOS include irregular or prolonged menstrual cycles and elevated levels of the male hormone androgen, which results in excess body hair and acne, and polycystic ovaries where the ovaries are not able to function properly. Getting a diagnosis by a health practitioner is key to effectively managing PCOS. The onset of PCOS can start from as young as 14 or 15 years old and if left undiagnosed and untreated for years – will cause further health complications down the line, including possible infertility. Parents are encouraged to talk to their daughters about what is considered ‘normal’ and ‘abnormal’ periods. Just by having these conversations, we can normalize these common women’s health conditions and debunk myths and the unfortunate stigma attached to it. What is Salome and how can it help with PCOS? The Salome range was developed by local pharmaceutical company, 3Sixty Biomedicine, and is based on consumer insights that South Africans are wanting more natural alternatives to treat common female health conditions.  Salome Polycos assists with the management of symptoms commonly associated with PCOS by helping to decrease testosterone levels, increasing progesterone levels in women with irregular or absent periods and thus regulating the menstrual cycle, as well as reducing blood pressure levels. It also plays a role in increasing insulin activity in women diagnosed with PCOS, as many suffer from insulin resistance. Due to these hormonal imbalances women living with PCOS often battle with acne, irregular periods, male pattern hair loss or experience excessive body hair growth (hirsutism). Salome Polycos’s main active ingredient is D-chiro-inositol (DCI) which is a natural extract obtained from the carob tree. In cases where infertility can be linked back to the hormonal imbalances caused by PCOS, patients who make use of products like Salome Fertility that contain Myo-inositol and D-Chiro-inositol have seen an increase in their ovulation, a reduction in their hyperandrogenism and in the oxidative stress in their follicular fluid. The efficacy of the product lies in it containing the correct ratio of Myo-inositol and D-Chiro-inositol that have been extracted from the pod of the Carob bean tree. Clinical studies have shown that these natural extracts are instrumental in helping manage the regulation of ovarian function in PCOS patients.  Who can use this? Due to the herbal extracts and use of natural ingredients in the products, the Salome range has minimal side effects and can be reimbursed by certain medical aids. The products are available online at www.3Sixtybiomedicine.co.za or on Takealot.com, and can be purchased over the counter at leading pharmacies nationwide. We believe #YourJourneyMatters so follow the Salome range on their social media pages to hear from Salome experts who are committed to educating and normalizing conversations about common women’s health conditions.  Visit: 3sixtybiomedicine.co.za   Facebook: Salome Range Twitter: SalomeRange Instagram: SalomeRange

These personality types can quickly become bored when they’re on their own. And thus, they need professional environments where they can work as part of a team. The key to professionally succeeding lies in finding roles that stimulate the characteristics of naturally confident and outgoing extroverts. Luckily, many jobs are ideal for these personality types. Some of them might not have even crossed your mind. Keep reading Adzuna’s list of awesome jobs for extroverts for some inspiration! #1 Sales Manager If you’re competitive and can convince people that black is the new white, a sales management role is perfect for you. In this job, you’ll communicate with others daily to show enthusiasm about your product. Authoritative people that don’t easily give up thrive in sales management roles. However, this isn’t the right career for you if you’re easily persuaded. To get into this career avenue, you need some previous experience in sales. If you’ve got a degree in a relevant field, like marketing, it could also help you secure your dream job. #2 Event Planner If you’re a natural-born planner with creative flair and impeccable organisational skills, event planning might be calling your name. since you’re a sociable and friendly person (being an extrovert), your skills will come in handy when communicating with clients. Event planners arrange a variety of events. Everything from corporate gatherings to private parties and functions. Although it is a high-stress job, it’s also one of the most satisfying. If you like planning parties more than attending them and have excellent time-management skills, you’ve got what it takes to become an event planner. Although you probably don’t need a degree to get your foot in the door, certification in event planning could help give your career goals a boost. #3 Human Resource Advisor Do you feel rewarded when you assist people? How about being in a position with authority? HR advisors screen and hire new staff members, handle the training, employment contracts, payroll, and benefits. However, you need a strong personality to secure this role and have excellent communication skills. A role in HR is ideal for people with direct personalities. But avoid this career if you’re extremely sensitive. You’ll also need a university degree in human resource management or business administration to land an HR role. #4 Public Relations Officer Networking events and social gatherings with like-minded professionals are all part of the public relations game. As a PR officer, you need to be highly outgoing to effectively manage a company’s public image and act as its representative. This is one of the best jobs for extroverts because they bloom in a fast-paced environment. If you’re a creative thinker that can solve problems on the go, a degree in journalism, marketing, or English can help you break into this sector. #5 Financial Advisor Financial advisors help their clients with tax and insurance information and help them find ideal investment opportunities. They also help their clients protect their assets. If you’re dreaming about a career as a financial advisor, you’ll need a range of soft skills and be a number guru. Steer clear if paperwork isn’t your forte, though. To start your career in this field, you’ll need a degree in finance, economics, or business. Many financial advisors started in related financial roles and slowly built up their experience before taking on this role. You might find that you need a combo of experience and education to get your foot in the door here. #6 Recruitment Consultant Recruitment consultants are the links between employers and job seekers. They help employers find top candidates for vacant roles. Daily duties of recruiters include interviews with candidates, networking, and headhunting. Because they need to hit sales targets, recruiters run a tight ship. These roles are perfect for natural matchmakers but won’t work for someone that isn’t competitive or assertive. To get into this industry, you’ll need a university degree in human resources, marketing, or public relations. In Conclusion There are many great jobs for extroverts that’ll ensure these personality types thrive in their professional settings. After reading through these six job highlights, you should have a better understanding of the kind of roles that’s best for outgoing people. If you’re still unsure about which job is right for you, you can always take a career aptitude test to discover an ideal path to follow!

Kairos School of Inquiry

Preparing our children for school or preparing school for our children?

“What if we prepared schools for children, instead of preparing children for schools? What would that look like?” I resonated with this question popping up on my social media feed the other day  — many others did too. Who wouldn’t, right? Yes, why don’t we redesign our schools around the needs of our children?  Consider some of the intrinsic needs a child may experience during school: physical and emotional safety, time to play, physical movement, creative expression, agency, inspiration, meaningful conversations, respect from adults and classmates, authentic human connection, empathy — indeed, how about simply a pervading celebration of life?  Imagine a schooling system designed to meet such needs. Human beings are social animals: what we learn happens in community —  by engaging with each other. With classmates, with teachers: internal shifts of a student’s understanding are stimulated through exploring and sharing ideas (and feelings about them). Imagine an educational ethos that conceives of learning as collaborative inquiry being normal in our society? Instead of conceptualising education around the individualised acquisition of facts and concepts, imagine purposefully acknowledging the broader reality that learning occurs across a multiplicity of “intelligences” or “literacies” Even if we don’t intend learning to happen that way, it always will. We are holistic beings, and learning is a whole-body, whole-brain experience. And this means learning will be most effective when multiple literacies are valued and celebrated.  Multimodal learning is more enjoyable, helping achieve genuine understanding (rather than simply getting the correct answers), self-motivation (instead of the external motivation of tests) and self-initiative (instead of passive reproduction of facts). When education is done well, a child excels across multiple literacies — both where he/she is customarily strong as well as weak.  The issues that hit the media — like high school initiations, intense exam stress, a pervasiveness of bullying, incidents of racism or sexism, and so on — are mere sirens of a deeper problem. At its core, there is a covert violence within the mass schooling system, as we know it. How can it not be so when “the child is being prepared for school” and not the other way around? Imagine a network of schooling communities that commit themselves to exploring ways of infusing empathy into our schools. Marshall Rosenberg, founder of the Centre for Non-Violent Communication, alerted his students to the covert violence that lies concealed in the way we relate to each other, including the way we have been accustomed to being educated. Rosenberg alerted us to various examples of covert violence in the way we communicate. Hiding or suppressing our true feelings and needs, neglecting to genuinely listen to the feelings and needs of others, making demands instead of requests, imposing rules and punishments instead of making agreements with others … Most of us have been schooled in this violent sort of communication culture: much unlearning is needed for a school community to acquire an ethos of empathy and non-violence. The democratic ethos of mutual respect between adults and children can be an adjustment for many teachers. But imagine a movement across schools where this is the case. Where we agree to remember the importance of listening to each other — properly. To hear everyone’s feelings and needs, and for everyone to be invited to express their own. An ethos where everyone remains open to what is alive in each other and themselves, from moment to moment.  So let’s change the system, yes? Not so easy! Unfortunately, there is invariably a profound resistance to changing the system. Established schools struggle to meet these needs as it would require escaping the established conceptions of a “good school” within those communities . The communities of these schools are accustomed to ideas of a good school that go back generations. Established schools need their traditions. While I understand the inertia of well-established schools, I find it tragic how brand new schools fail to leapfrog over the intrinsic problems in the system. In South Africa, the public companies have created an abundance of new, for-profit schools that are invariably reproductions of the conventional system. Clearly our society colludes in the problem. We want what we know. We know the system is dated. The World Economic Forum (WEF) has alerted us to the new requirements for employability in the 21st Century — “character qualities” of curiosity, initiative, persistence, adaptability, social & cultural awareness and leadership, as well as “competencies” like critical thinking, creativity, communication and collaboration. This constitutes a new curriculum. Parents are beginning to recognise the need to create opportunities for their children to achieve these requirements outside school if the school doesn’t teach them, or to seek out a school that does. So much about the conventional school system emerges from a mindless obedience to traditional school rituals. Frequent testing with punitive consequences; a competitive win-lose ethos in both the classroom and the sports field; isolated archipelagoes of classrooms; rigid silos of schooling grades; disconnected school subjects that discourage cross-context learning: none of these are necessary to achieve the academic outcomes needed for a child’s future. None of them are intrinsically educational. None of them serve the WEF’s character qualities and competencies for the twenty first century. None of them serve to satisfy a child’s intrinsic needs mentioned above. And all of them are integral to the conventional schooling system.  In Ancient Greece, people had three conceptions of time, and each represents a different sort of schooling system. We have Kronos (the time of the clock), Aeon (the time of eternity) and Kairos (the time of the moment). The conventional school orients itself firmly around Kronos: the timetable, the school calendar, the lesson plan. Then there are the deschoolers — the dispersed community of parents homeschooling (and “unschooling”) their kids. They orient themselves around Aeon time. And then there are those schools that endeavour to achieve the seemingly impossible, (and Madiba reminds us it always “seems impossible until it’s done”) and orient themselves around Kairos. That is: remain constantly adaptable to the moment: play the Kronos

What to know about Covid 19 vaccines and skin reactions

As we all know, our skin is our biggest organ, and our skin is affected by EVERYTHING in life – our lifestyle, what we eat, drink, medication, sun exposure and also when we are sick. With this pandemic, a lot of focus has been on the vaccines, and obviously the main focus is to stop the spread of the virus. This, however, leaves a few questions regarding treatment before and after receiving your vaccine.   Guidelines has been given to our industry, as well as to the aesthetic medical industry, on timeframes to make sure adverse reactions do not occur. The main aim of this, is to prevent FURTHER inflammation as this is the main reason why we struggle with skin problems. Inflammation is the umbrella of all problematic skin conditions. Ageing is caused by inflammation, pigmentation, acne, atopic skin conditions like eczema, rosacea and skin sensitivity. These all caused by inflammation of some kind! Now, with the Covid 19 vaccine, we are introducing inflammation into the body therefore it could definitely affect our skins too! It can make the skin super-sensitive, it can dry out the skin, cause severe dehydration, it may cause hyperpigmentation etc. We actually don’t know, but based on what we DO know about inflammation, it is necessary that we know how to treat skin in these times. If you have received your vaccine, or are planning on getting your jab, please make sure to support your skin! This can be done in a number of ways. Q:  What should we use on our skins to support our skin against inflammation of any kind? A: We need to use medical grade skincare products and ingredients that are well tolerated by the skin, and specifically growth factors and antioxidants to fight against the inflammation that may be caused in the skin. Hydrating, barrier repair as well as sun protection! This doesn’t mean that you need to change your whole skincare routine or product range at home, you would need to only slot in a product like the AQ Active Serum once a day under your day moisturiser! Q:  How long before receiving your vaccine should you introduce these ingredients into your skin care routine, if you are not already using them? A:  This is quite an open-ended answer, as some medical specialists say 4 –6 weeks and other say 14 days. I think to be perfectly honest, we should rather be safe than sorry, and try to prepare the skin at least 4 weeks prior to getting your vaccine, as this is how long a regular, healthy cell turnover will take in your epidermis. Q: What about recommendations for aesthetic treatments and medical aesthetic procedures? A:  For superficial, mild and non-invasive treatments, 14 days before and 2-3 weeks after getting the vaccine… For your more advanced skin treatments such as micro needling, plasma pen, certain chemical peels, laser and medical aesthetic procedures such as botox, fillers and threads etc: 4 –6 weeks before and after getting your vaccine. Q: What types of treatments are totally safe to have done? A:  Focus on anti-inflammatory treatments like Growth Factor induced therapy that we refer to as GFIT treatments. This is where we use the AQ Skin Solution Recovery Serum with different modalities. In this case just an application with LED light for about 30 minutes or a light stamping with 0.5mm depth. Certain chemical peels that have anti-inflammatory properties. Calming, healing and antioxidant-type ingredients plus of course hydration and barrier protection. Q:  How long after receiving the vaccine should you keep using these ingredients? A:  I think it is hugely important to understand that all of us are different and all of us will react or respond in different ways, therefore I would suggest to keep on using these ingredients on your skin for an extended period of time. Q: What do growth factors do in the skin? A:  It is very important to use growth factors at a time like this because AQ growth factors allows your skin to heal itself! It will work differently on each person’s skin because it will assess what needs to be done. Some patients have more inflammation than others, or maybe the vascular system within the skin isn’t functioning properly or it’s affected their collagen production. The growth factors will regulate the cell functions and bring it back to its norm, therefore it will work on any and all skin conditions. It basically regulates the different processes within the skin so that the skin can heal itself correctly and be in its healthiest state. Q:  What makes AQ Skin Solutions growth factors different to other growth factors on the market? A: The Human Growth Factors found in AQ Skin Solutions is fibroblast-derived, and then cloned in the lab to react the same way your natural growth factors do. We have a Halal Certificate showing that no genetic material from the donor line is utilized within the formulation. Human growth factors will be easily recognised by the cells, meaning no side effects, no contra indications and it can be used on skin of all ages and all skin types. Other growth factor products are derived from plant extracts or some from bacteria. AQ is one of 5 Human growth factor products worldwide, the only HGF range available in Africa! We use between 150 and 200 different growth factor families within each formulation at optimal combinations and percentages to ensure sufficient communication to the cells. Q: Medical-grade skincare is surprisingly affordable, isn’t it? A: There is a misconception that medical-grade skincare is expensive, but the reality is that investing in it will likely save you money in the long run. While you may have to pay a little more upfront, using medical-grade skincare that is tailored specifically to your concerns means you’ll get the visible results you’ve been seeking. Also, because they are highly concentrated with active ingredients, you only need to use a small amount to get your results. Therefore, medical-grade skincare products
