Happy Family Organics, makers of ready-to-eat, nutritious and delicious organic meals, is not only changing the way babies and children are nourished in South Africa and around the world, but they are also changing the lives of young orphans in Tanzania through their Happy Family Children’s Village (HFCV).
The HFCV is a joint initiative with The Small Things, an NGO that works to keep children from the small and impoverished village of Nkoaranga with their families through micro-finance, adult education and school support amongst others, but that also provides family-style, community-based residential care to children at the HFCV when re-joining their families is impossible.
Happy Family Organics’ sponsorship of HFCV is part of the company’s commitment to a changing way of doing business that is gaining traction around the world – one that balances purpose with profit and that considers all stake-holders, not just share-holders. As a certified B Corp, Happy Family Organics is legally required to consider the impact of their business on their workers, customers, suppliers, community, and the environment.
With nearly 3000 certified B Corps operating in 50 countries around the world, the movement is based on the principals that members must be the change they seek in the world, that they aspire to do no harm and benefit all, and that they act with the understanding that we are all each dependent upon another and thus responsible for each other and future generations.
As a B Corp, Happy Family Organics must meet rigorous standards of social and environmental performance, accountability and transparency, and in 2017 the company was named Best of the World: Changemakers Award – an award given to businesses that exceed the high standards B Corp members are required to adhere to.
There are currently only 8 businesses in South Africa that are certified B Corps, but with the growing recognition that something fundamental is missing from Capitalism’s balance sheet, it is hoped that more local businesses will be inspired by Happy Family Organics to become part of the change the world so badly needs, and that is slowly but steadily gaining momentum.
