One of the world’s leading and most established manufacturers of quality products, the company has just released a baby product line which not only provide moms with a sense of surety of quality, but also a sense of nostalgia for the brand that most of they themselves were raised on. Review: Fisher- Price Clock Blocks

Im not sure about you, but there is certainly something comforting about a wooden toy for my child, they just seem to feel right. We were sent the Fisher- Price Clock Blocks to review and as usual they did not disappoint. Fisher- Price is simply a brand you can trust. The Fisher- Price Clock Blocks uses animals and shapes to teach the time. It is the ideal toy for ages 2 and up.. Gross Motors skills are also developed playing with this toy. Not only can the arms of the watch move but the shaped numbers can be taken in and out. These small actions go a long way to healthy development in toddlers.  Then of course as your little one grows, this is a great tool to start teaching them how to tell the time thus working on cognitive skills. Fisher-Price Alphabet Blocks

For decades, and indeed probably centuries, building blocks have always been a part of a child’s toy box.  The traditional, nostalgic aspect of the wooden toy is one that Fisher-Price have retained through much of their new baby products line, which was launched in South Africa in April through Prima Baby. The alphabet blocks provide baby with hours of fun and entertainment, but essentially they are one of the most important developmental toys a child can own.  Combining skills such as colour co-ordination, hand-eye co-ordination, balance and patience, most adults can even remember the joy and frustration these toys could bring as building large structures took loud tumbles or alternatively, became giant buildings to let the imagination run wild in.   With 26 alphabet blocks, baby can create their own sets of patterns based on the prints thereon, assisting with logical thinking abilities, fine motor skills and logical combinations. A wonderful gift for newborns to grow into and toddlers to immerse their minds into, the alphabet block is a great gesture at baby showers and early birthdays. Alternatively, parents can just go pick up a set themselves instore now at Hamleys Toy stores, selected Kids Emporium stores, www.takealot.com, www.loot.co.za, ww.purplepepperz.com, www.thebabyzone.co.za & www.cleverlittlemonkey.co.za

HOW DOES PLAY PROMOTE HEALTHY SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Play is a child’s language, his work, his relaxation and the way he builds relationships. Forming a healthy relationship with parents help children to feel secure. This sets the stage for a child’s social and emotional development for the rest of his life. Social development is how we interact with others, the ability to form secure relationships. Emotional development is the ability to regulate and express our emotions. Strong social-emotional development is the basis for all later social, emotional and academic success. According to the National Academy of Sciences there are three qualities children need to have to be ready for school. Intellectual skills, motivation to learn and strong social and emotional capacity. How do we as parents create the opportunities needed to develop these skills? It is simple, children need to play. Children use play to release emotions, work through feelings and understand their world better by play-acting in situations they can control. The give and take patterns of play allow children the opportunity to practice the skills necessary for healthy emotional development. Here are some practical ways to help: Suggest ways for children to interact and play together. If you see a child struggling to build a tower, suggest that one helps by holding it while other one builds. Help children learn to take turns, or share what they have. “Ethan wants to play too but he has no play-dough. Let’s give him some of ours so we can all play together.” Help your child build empathy and sympathy for others. If someone got hurt let him give a hug or a special toy to help him feel better. Teach him to help someone up if they fell. Build your child’s vocabulary regarding feelings. Being able to express his feelings adequately will result in less frustration and aggression. For example, disappointment, nervous, frustrated, curious, amazed and astonished. Acknowledge your child’s feelings. Help him to talk about how he is feeling. Comfort and hold him and speak to him softly and calmly. Love your child and show affection towards him. Give him lots of hugs and cuddles. Tell him that you are proud of him. Role play and pretend play are lovely ways to teach children about feelings. Tell a story about how the bear got hurt, or how someone said something ugly to him. Explain how he is feeling and give your child a chance to explain what feelings the bear could be having because of what has happened. Let him help the bear with suggestions of how he can make him feel better.

Excitement, excitement and some more excitement. Every child seems to love a virtual pet, it is that feeling that you are looking after something special, a little friend to call your own. The Little Live Pets Range is just so much fun for little ones. There is great antiquation watching the little egg hatch and open with your surprise inside. Now your chicken (in our case we hatched Tilly the Dancing Chick) The Little Live Pets Surprise Chick comes inside a plastic egg, after easily following the activate instructions, you place your Little Live Pets Surprise Chick in their home on the locator pin. Then the magic begins; you wait and listen as your little Chick taps and cracks the egg open revealing who they are and begin hopping out its egg. But the most fun starts when you start playing with your Little Live Pets Surprise Chick. The Little Live Pets Surprise Chick loves to hop and sing to get your attention, and when your child is finished playing he will be able to get his chick to settle down as well! Each chick has a built in petting sensor. This means that when you stroke his head he will calm down and sing a sweet song. Should children play with toy guns?

I know this question has been asked a lot of times and is highly debated in society, so here it comes… should children play with toy guns? A while back I told my husband I don’t want our son to play with toy guns. For me it just feels so wrong on so many levels. Recently my son had his third birthday party and while I was planning it I was wondering how to go about things. Would it be rude to tell all the moms to please not give toy guns for a gift? And what would happen if someone did give my son a toy gun for his birthday what would I do? So the situation was taken out of my hands because time goes so fast and the birthday party was organized in a rush of chaos since it was December. We got home from his birthday party laden with gifts. When he opened all his presents he got two guns. One was in a SWAT team set. A big black gun that made machine gun noises. The other a harmless and fun water gun. Now where do you draw the line? Are water guns fine? Are brightly coloured guns fine while black realistic looking guns aren’t? My son was over the moon with all of his gifts, especially the big black gun. He started charging around the house telling us he is shooting us dead. My heart dropped, it was all so wrong but how could I now break his heart by taking away his prized gun? Fortunately toys are not made to last and by the end of the following day this black gun was broken into pieces and I could throw it away.. by the way I am going to be writing a post soon about the terrible quality of the toys today! I’m not going to go into all the points that people have brought up for and against toy guys, the simple fact for me is that guns are intended to kill people. Guns are associated with violence. For me it is just not ok for my children to play with toy guns. I will never feel fine with it and I am going to go with my gut feel on this. For my son’s next birthday I will remember to let all the moms know to please not give any toy guns. I also make a point never to buy toys guns for anyone else’s kids. Violence vs Nudity and Sex? Something happened at the school a few weeks ago that I just wanted to share about that fits in a bit with this topic. My son is… shall we just say quite boisterous right now. He is an angry little toddler, throwing tantrums and yes he is hitting and kicking too. So he is being a typical three year old boy. There were a good few times I collected my kids from school and a teacher told me that he had been misbehaving. On the one occasion she said he had hit one child twice through the face with his bottle (reminds me of my drinking days…) I was very embarrassed and told the teacher I would deal with it. Each time she brushed it off saying she just wanted to let me know, but you know they do that at this age. Then I arrive at the school and this same teacher tells me in a very serious manner that my son has been incredibly naughty today and it is serious. I start to panic wondering what could be worse than my nearly 3 year old hitting kids in the face. She tells me that twice that day my son pulled down his pants in the sandpit and showed the other children his bum. I blink wondering what else is coming for this to be so bad right? When it is clear nothing else is coming I start giggling. This did not impress the teacher who then told me that if I am laughing my children will see it and think it is a laughing matter. She said that the school is conservative and don’t take this sort of behaviour lightly. Now I wasn’t laughing because my son flashed his cute little butt cheeks at school, I was actually giggling at the craziness of the fact that this school considers a 3 year flashing his butt a much more serious offence than hitting another child twice, hard through the face with an object. Where is the sense in that I ask? At this moment my son made an appearance. Wearing only his tshirt, flashing all his bits to me, the teacher and the entire class. He was holding a full toilet roll that was dripping wet and when he saw me he asked me to please help him. When he turned around his cute little but cheeks covered in poop flashed at the class. Now I have to keep a straight face? See now I don’t consider myself the type of mother that let’s anything go, but I do feel that I have my priorities straight. I have no issue with nudity or sex. Yes for sure I am not talking about porn here, but if my kids walk into the room and the tv is on I would much rather have them walk in on a sex scene or a bit of nudity than a scene of violence. I’ve noticed that tv programs and movies regularly show violence, even in cartoons. We live in a world that is so desensitized to violence and where our children grow up surrounded by this. We live in a society where there is so much crime and violence, yet we allow our kids to play with a toy replica of a killing machine? We live in a society with skewed values where butt cheeks are forbidden but violence towards another is ok? Well I’m sorry but I go the other way on

Play is crucial for early child development

Only 29 percent of South African children have access to safe, child-appropriate play areas in their communities, this according UNICEF, but a local organisation – Play Africa is championing for this change countrywide. Gretchen Wilson-Prangley, CEO of Play Africa – a social enterprise organisation driving inclusive public learning for the country’s most vulnerable says play is “exceedingly important” for children of all ages and an integral part of early learning and healthy social development. “Neuroscience has confirmed that the first few years of a child’s life is crucial for early learning. And play forms part of early learning and is far more valuable than we realise,” she says. Wilson-Prangley says play sparks imagination, enhances creativity and problem solving capacities, promotes teamwork and helps to instil empathy and compassion for others. “I believe in the importance of helping to advance children’s basic rights and this includes the right to play,” she says. And since many South African children lack toys and other learning materials that can help stimulate a range of child-initiated, open-ended activities which bolster cognitive, physical, social and emotional development, Wilson-Prangley explains that her organisation seeks to promote one single message – there is no cost to play. Their workshops encourage parents and children to make use of everyday materials when playing. “We demonstrate just how to transform everyday items into play materials using the imagination. Few people know that you’re able to make a robot or a rocket ship using clean milk containers, or a car out of empty loo paper rolls. What’s important is the process and the imagination and creativity it stimulates,” she says. Further, she says play is a “good way to engage” and helps children make use of their imagination; she also describes it as “pleasurable and enjoyable”. “Playing overall gives children an opportunity to stretch their thinking and imagination, it also invites repeated active engagement which is highly beneficial for children of all ages,” Wilson-Prangley says.

Once your little boy stretches him to his full capacity, he will always return to his original shape. The stretchy elastic that he is made from allows your boy to stretch him, fold and wrap him into any shape almost that you can think of. Whilst this is such a basic toy concept, we were surprised at how much fun he was to play with once we got started. Collect the other DC Comics’ Justice League team mates, Batman, Superman and flash and get the whole team joining in the fight. The importance of play, age by age

Play is the occupation of children – a child’s work. A baby’s main tasks in the first three years are to master the world through movement, to develop a great self esteem, to learn language and other cognitive skills and to feel mastery and a sense of accomplishment. To achieve these goals a baby works very hard and he does this work through play. Play can entail toys and books or may simply involve interactions with others. You are your baby’s favourite toy and you will quickly notice that you get more squeals of delight and joy when you are playing with your baby than when he is left to play with a toy alone. When your baby experiences enjoyment, his neurons fire in a way that stimulates way more brain development and growth. So before you rush out and buy expensive toys bear in mind that you are really all your baby needs. Having said that, if you are looking for ideas to keep your baby playing happily that also have purposeful value, this list will help you choose toys that work well for each age and stage. Birth to three months Controlling eyes and visual focus – To develop visual skills, it is worth making or buying a black, white and red mobile, to hang over the change mat. Learn about body schema – Touch is the best way for babies to learn about their body. A great play activity for this age is baby massage. Identify where sounds come from and what they are – Rattles and simple toys with a noise are lovely tools for this age. Encourage your baby to identify where the sound comes from. Controlling hands and arms – Objects that have a handle that is small enough to be grasped can be given to your baby to encourage voluntary grip, which emerges towards the end of this stage. Develop back muscles – Tummy time is vital but some babies resist the position. Aside from regular exposure to tummy time, you can invest in a play mat that has lovely tactile and visual attachments so your baby is playing and engaged while strengthening his back muscles. Three to six months Rolling and moving – While your baby is on his play mat, set up a mobile near his feet or buy a ‘kick and play’ activity center. Kicking while lying on his back helps your baby to develop strong tummy muscles for rolling and crawling. Reach, grabbing and releasing – This is the stage when your baby starts to use hands intentionally – a play gym that your little one can lie under to reach for interesting items is a great way to stimulate eye-hand coordination. Sitting balance – Aside from propping your baby amongst cushions, a fun game to develop sitting muscles whilst eliciting squeals of delight is to get an empty box that your baby can fit in and pull him around on a tiled floor, while he tries to balance supported on all sides by the box. Clapping – Put your baby on your lap and play ‘Pat-a-cake’ – not only will this fun activity enhance sitting balance but it will also prepare your little one for the task of clapping. Movement stimulation – The sense of moving through the air is not only loads of fun, but is vital for stimulating the sense of movement and muscle tone. Play airplanes – whizzing him through the air. Always play within his comfort levels and go slowly at first. Six to 12 months Engaging the desire to move – From the sitting position, its time to start inspiring your little one to move into the crawling position. Place fun, bright toys just out of his reach to encourage him to move. Manipulating toys – Small toys such as blocks and balls that can be grasped in one hand are great for this stage. They will eventually be transferred between hands, which develops bilateral hand use. Sit with your little one and give him a block in one hand – then give him a block in the other hand. Then offer a third one so that he has to decide which one to let go of. Develop object permanence – Games that involve hiding objects will be great fun at this stage. Take a favourite toy or his dummy and hide it under a cloth (while he watches) then ask your little one where it is gone. During this stage he will learn where to look and slowly develop object permanence (the awareness that an object still exists when you can’t see it). Language burst – During this stage, your baby’s understanding of language will blossom – he will soon understand much of what you say. Play games using words, such as “Where is the bird?” Then point to a bird. This game teaches non-verbal communication such as pointing as well as the label of an item (bird). One to two years Repetition makes sense of the world – Your toddler will love interactive play with you and will want to repeat games, actions and activities over and over. While this can seem boring or pointless to you, it is the way your baby learns from the world. Watch how subtly he changes the game each time you play it – he is experimenting with his world. Learning games – Your toddler is ready to be challenged cognitively. Puzzles are a brilliant game for this age. Start with 4-piece puzzles and work your way up to more complicated puzzles. Your baby will learn shapes, colours and spatial form through puzzle play. Chase games – Toddlers love to be chased. Games that involve finding and pursuing each other are excellent for motor skills such as running and balance. Anticipation develops cognitive skills and anticipation. Obstacle courses – Build an obstacle course inside or outside, using boxes, cushions and furniture. Clambering over the course will develop not only coordination but spatial awareness too.

Sensopathic Play – More Valuable Than Parents Realise

In a fast-moving digital world, where children are glued to the couch with a handheld device in-hand, give them an opportunity to experience the world through touch – a fun and engaging way to play and learn with endless developmental benefits. Parenting expert Nikki Bush says sensopathic play uses the sense of touch, the biggest sensory system in the body to help children better understand the world around them. “Sensopathic play is a very real, concrete and experiential way to learn through personal experience. And as Albert Einstein said: ‘Learning is experience. Everything else is just information’,” Bush says. Yet, in the modern world fewer children engage in sensopathic play, and instead spend more time in front of a laptop computer or playing video games. Bush says the digital world has evolved so much that these days real toys and games have even been replaced with similar screen-based games. “Screens don’t provide three-dimensional learning. And these days a 4-year old can play a shape matching game on a tablet, but can’t do it in the real world. Similarly, a 5-year old can build a 64-piece puzzle on a computer game, but struggles to build a puzzle in class,” she says. Parents are advised to encourage this type of play, and Bush says the options are endless. Drawing on a child’s back with bubble bath during bath time; allowing him/her to draw pictures on the patio door and window with shaving cream, and crafting little figures out of play dough are just a few examples that guarantee fun, interactive multisensory experiences. And there are many developmental benefits attached to each, including fine motor coordination and teaching a child how to feel emotionally safe and secure. “Balance children’s time on screens with even more time doing real activities in real time with real objects and real people and you’ll be surprised at the results,” she says. There are dozens of toys on the market that encourage sensopathic play and the Child Development Team at Toy Kingdom has carefully selected and curated a range of toys that encourage this form of play, including finger paints and play dough, as well as dolls and plush toys. “Every child needs an opportunity to experience the world in a very real sense and through the sense of touch. By ignoring sensopathic play, your child will not learn as effectively as when they are fully, physically engaged in their own learning creating meaningful experiences,” Bush says.

Review: MasterChef Junior Range

If you have a budding chef in your house, then this is the product range for you! We are all too familiar with the popular tv show MasterChef Junior and now they have their amazing cooking line for children. I think that as parents we often forget just how educational cooking can be for children.  Not only do they brush up on their math skills by measuring correctly but there is a science that goes with cooking.  Exploring your child’s creativity is a must and MasterChef Junior encourages your child to do just that. We were sent 2 out of the 5 MasterChef Junior sets available.  Kids really are provided the opportunity to become the ultimate home cook.  Each box set provides your child with real cooking tools, plating suggestions to created fantastic dishes, and recipes for all skill levels such as: Line Cook Sous Chef MasterChef Best of all a blank recipe card comes in each set so that you child can get creative with the flavours and dishes that they love most. Cooking is such a valuable skill for any child to learn and so having tools on hand to teach them can really turn into a bonding experience. Certainly what stuck us most is the unbelievable quality of products. From the real wood finish to the silicone bowls, handles, jugs and baking cups to name a few, these products are certainly worth every cent. The Pizza Cooking Set This set includes:  Sauce Ladle Wood Pizza Board Personal Pizza Pan Pizza Cutter Every child LOVES pizza. In our case it provided a fantastic Saturday afternoon lunch activity.  We only wish that we had more pizza pans this size as they are certainly the perfect size for children.  Each of our children had fun making their own dough and then following their recipe to create a special afternoon treat that THEY created themselves. The Baking Kitchen Set This set includes: Mixing Bowl Liquid Measuring Cup Rolling Pin Spatula 4 Silicone Baking Cups 4 Dusting Guards In our family one of our daughters is gluten intolerant and so making breakfast for her can sometimes be a hard task.  In our house we encourage our children to help each other which can sometimes be hard when it comes to her meals.  We simply loved that there was an easy breakfast egg cup recipe that was easy enough for our youngest children to follow.  This made our breakfast a whole lot easier. Now although this did not fall within baking as such, it was probably the best part.  The fact that children are encouraged to mix and match and make cooking fun and awesome again! The recipes included in this set were: Chocolate peanut butter cupcakes Baked macaroni and cheese Breakfast egg cups The only thing we can say is that we really wish we had the entire set. MasterChef Junior cooking sets include: Burger Cooking Set Pizza Cooking Set Baking Cooking Set Breakfast Cooking Set Cooking Essentials Set These products are recommended for ages 6 years and up and are available from Toy Kingdom Stores or online Toy Kingdom stores across South Africa: V&A Waterfront, Cape Town Canal Walk Shopping Centre, Cape Town Tyger Valley Shopping Centre, Cape Town Cavendish Square Shopping Centre, Cape Town Blue Route Mall, Cape Town Mountain Mill, Worcester Gateway Theatre of Shopping, North of Durban Ballito Junction, Durban Sandton City Shopping Centre, Johannesburg Cresta Shopping Centre, Johannesburg East Rand Mall, Johannesburg Clearwater Mall, Johannesburg Forest Hill City, Pretoria Menlyn Park Shopping Centre, Pretoria Centurion Mall, Pretoria Woodlands Boulevard, Pretoria Milimani City Mall, Tanzania Somerset West Mall (opening soon) Visit their website at  www.toykingdom.co.za Tweet: Follow us on Twitter @toykingdomshop Facebook: Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/toykingdomshop Instagram: Follow us on Instagram   https://www.instagram.com/toykingdomsouthafrica/ Pinterest: Follow us on Pinterest https://www.pinterest.com/ToyKingdomSA/ You Tube: Follow us on You Tube https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgRUx-2NfXYRX7W5CL0su8g
