Infertility challenges during COVID-19? Help is available!

June is World Infertility Awareness Month, a time dedicated to heightening awareness about infertility – a medical condition often not widely spoken about yet something which affects a surprisingly large number of couples around the world.1a “Infertility is when you cannot get or stay pregnant after trying for at least a year and you are under the age of 35, or if you are over the age of 35 and are unable to get or stay pregnant for six months,” says Dr Sulaiman Heylen, President of the Southern African Society of Reproductive Medicine and Gynaecological Endoscopy (SASREG).” In the past few years, the number of couples seeking treatment for infertility has dramatically increased due to factors such as postponement of childbearing in women, and lifestyle factors such as stress, smoking and body weight.1b However, an additional recent stumbling block has been the fear of contracting COVID-19 which has had an impact on delaying people’s fertility journeys. For those already undergoing fertility treatment, when COVID-19 hit, there was a suspension of treatment worldwide and the subsequent delay of fertility treatments has resulted in much psychological distress for many patients.2a The month of June therefore aims to highlight why it’s so important not to let the pandemic ruin one’s fertility plans. “In addition to psychological issues, there are the physiological ones too,” says Dr Heylen. “Delaying fertility treatment due to fear of COVID-19 can further reduce your chances of successful treatment outcomes, with studies showing a reduction in live birth rates in patients who have postponed treatment.” “Treatment was suspended during the hard lockdown, but clinics are open once again, and particularly ‘high risk’ patients whose chances of falling pregnant would be further reduced by delaying treatment are encouraged to seek assistance,” says Dr Heylen.  Dr Heylen says that infertility is a disease as defined by the WHO that can lead to disability (loss of function). “Section 27 of the constitution entrenches the fundamental right to access healthcare services and specifically includes reproductive health. SASREG feels that fertility services are an essential service and should therefore not be withdrawn for patients for whom delay in treatment would affect their prognosis.” “It’s very important to stress that assisted reproductive technology (ART) clinics are safe and have taken precautions to ensure the health and safety of patients and staff, while we await the availability of the vaccines,” says Dr Heylen. “There is minimal risk of exposure to the virus at these clinics and there is therefore no need to wait for a vaccine to reach out to receive fertility treatment.” Dr Heylen also notes that there has been much misinformation circulating online about the potential negative impact the COVID-19 vaccine might have on fertility, which has been causing patients to delay treatment while deliberating whether to have the COVID-19 vaccine or not.2b With COVID-19 vaccines now available globally, the British Medical Journal (BMJ) has stated that there is “absolutely no evidence” that these vaccines can affect the fertility of women or men.3a “Patients undergoing fertility treatment should be encouraged to receive a COVID-19 vaccine when it becomes available to all South Africans,” says Dr Heylen. “There’s no evidence that vaccination before or during fertility treatment will impact the outcome of treatment in any way. As the vaccine does not contain any actual virus, there is also no reason to delay pregnancy attempts after vaccination.” People undergoing fertility treatment (in vitro fertilisation (IVF), frozen embryo transfer, egg freezing, ovulation induction, intrauterine insemination, or using donated gametes) can be vaccinated during treatment but may wish to consider the timing given the potential side effects in the few days after vaccination.3c People may start their fertility treatment immediately after being vaccinated, unless they wish to have a second dose before pregnancy.3d Those who are donating their eggs or sperm for the use of others can also still have a COVID-19 vaccine.3e Don’t delay fertility treatment One in every four couples in developing countries is affected by infertility4a, while one in six couples worldwide experience some form of infertility problem at least once during their reproductive lifetime.1a The current prevalence of infertility lasting for at least 12 months is estimated to affect between 8 to 12% worldwide for women aged 20 to 44.1a “More than 50% of patients who visit a fertility centre are 35 or older,” says Dr Heylen. “It is very important for people not to wait too long when they consider having children. Young women need to be aware that there is a slow decline in fertility from their 20s until the age of 35, after which it starts to decrease rapidly until the age of 45. About half of infertility cases can be linked to the male. It’s therefore extremely important to investigate your fertility options and fertility preservation earlier in life, rather than leaving it too late. A woman who is not ready to have a child can choose to freeze her eggs to try to preserve her ability to have a child later on should she wish to.” Treatment options It is now estimated that more than 9 million babies have been born worldwide since the first IVF baby was born in the last 70s.1c The most common fertilisation treatment is intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI)1e. This accounts for around three quarters of all treatments globally while conventional IVF accounts for around one quarter.1e Success rates from frozen embryo transfer are increasing too.1e “The good news is that over the last decade the advances that have been made in the field of assisted reproduction are massive and there is hope for those who might be suffering from some form of infertility,” says Dr Heylen. “You are not alone and there are many options available to help you realise your dream of having children.” Visit a fertility clinic near you to speak to a doctor about the options available to you and your partner. “Milk, what a winner! “

“Cow’s milk is a versatile and convenient source of essential nutrients for everyone. It is one of the top food sources of calcium and also contains a unique combination of valuable nutrients, of which some are typically lacking in many South Africans’ diets,” says registered dietitian at Rediscover Dairy, Maretha Vermaak. These include calcium, potassium and vitamin A. Milk is also an affordable source of good-quality protein, and its overall nutritional value stems from more than just the sum of its individual nutrients. What’s more is that milk is a filling food item, ready to be enjoyed just as it is or as a base in other dishes. Here’s what you should know when choosing the best milk options for everyone in your family. Your milk choices  The only difference between full-cream, low-fat and fat-free milk is the amount of fat per serving, which is also reflected by the energy value (kJ). A 250 ml serving full-cream milk contains 8 g fat and 640 kJ compared with 4 g fat and 518 kJ in low-fat milk. Fat-free milk contains 0.5 g fat and 362 kJ per 250 ml serving. You can also choose to buy fresh (pasteurised) milk or milk that keeps for longer, such as long-life or powdered milk. It doesn’t matter which one you choose – each offers you all the goodness of cow’s milk. Always keep fresh milk in the fridge. Long-life milk can be stored in the cupboard until you need it, but put it in the fridge once it has been opened. Powdered milk is convenient because you can prepare only as much as you need at one time. Know what’s in your basket Be sure that what you buy as powdered milk is made from real cow’s milk. The list of ingredients will be short and the first item will always be full-cream or fat-free (cow’s) milk. If not, it’s not real milk. Don’t be fooled: coffee creamer is not cow’s milk! Coffee creamer is made from unhealthy plant fats and contains very little protein (0.1%) and no calcium or any of the other important nutrients of milk. Coffee creamer is not a substitute for milk and can never replace milk or formula milk in the diet of children or babies. Take your pick: you’ll get the same unique combination of nutrients and the taste you love whichever milk option you choose!  Did you know?  Want to use milk later? Simply freeze it in smaller containers, and then let it thaw in the fridge before use. A quick shake once thawed and it’s ready to drink or use in your favourite recipes.   Do you have any questions about dairy? Mums Support Network

The silent victims of PND

One in three women suffer from Perinatal Distress (PND) in our country, according to the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG). But the terrifying truth is that it’s not just the women who suffer; it’s often their partners who take strain, even to the point of being diagnosed with PND themselves.  Hubby’s hormones Women’s hormones undergo major changes during and after pregnancy, but they’re not the only ones. The lack of sleep and increased stress that new fathers experience can also take a toll on their bodies, creating real hormonal shifts that are often overlooked. Craig*, whose wife Claire* was diagnosed with PND soon after the birth of their first child, began to feel off kilter around the same time, but “everyone was so concerned with Claire, nobody even asked me how I was doing.” Because Claire wasn’t coping, Craig felt added pressure to take on extra duties with the baby and around the house – on top of maintaining a full-time job. He “somehow muscled through” those first few difficult weeks, which turned into months before he realised how severely it had affected him.  Real men do cry At the end of his rope, Craig realised he had to do something about his situation. He reached out to a friend, who suggested he see a doctor. Through a combination of medical support, psychological therapy, and practical assistance (in the form of family, friends and a night nurse), Craig made a full recovery and is the happy husband and father he always dreamed of being. “It was the darkest and scariest period of my life,” he confesses. “Sometimes I’m not even sure how I made it through, but I am so glad that I did.” Not only is it unhelpful to bottle up emotions instead of working through them in a healthy way, it also sets an unrealistic and unhealthy example for older children and others who look up to you as a male role model. Like all humans, men experience a range of feelings triggered by both hormones and environmental factors, and by reaching out for help, you are doing the best thing for yourself, your family, and for society in general.  Risk factors Each father is an individual, but there are broad factors that may place someone at added risk of developing PND. These include a personal or family history of mental illness, a strained relationship with the mother of the child, or difficulties with the child – this could be anything from colic to serious medical conditions that induce additional stress and/or concern. Financial pressure, problems at work and feeling unsupported (not having a circle of family or friends to confide in) can also increase the risk. Single fathers are also at added risk.  However, perhaps the biggest risk factor is that so many cases of paternal PND go undiagnosed (or are diagnosed too late, once major damage has already been done) because the condition is not acknowledged or accepted as a legitimate illness. “Let me tell you, it is real!” implores Craig.  It’s essential that every new and expectant dad ensure he has the support of at least a few key friends or family members who can be a shoulder to lean on and, occasionally, a pair of hands to hold the baby. Further, we as a society need to update our mindset when it comes to supporting new and growing families. “People always ask how the baby is,” Craig points out. “Sometimes they ask how the mother is doing. But nobody ever asks the dad.” A family affair Treatment of the mother is important but should not be in isolation from treatment of the family as a unit. Some doctors are reluctant to include fathers in the treatment plan for PND or even to talk to them about it, because of concerns about breeching doctor-patient confidentiality. This further disempowers fathers from helping to heal the family unit as a whole. It’s crucial to find a healthcare practitioner that sees and treats new and expectant families together (this, of course, includes a broad range of family structures including unmarried partners, same-sex families, adoptive parents and single-parents with their own unique support structures).   Don’t live in denial  Craig’s advice for dads struggling with PND? “It doesn’t matter how you got here. It doesn’t matter what you think of mental illness. It does matter that you are here. It does matter that your partner needs kindness and the way to provide that is to accept that you are here. Then act.” You heard the man! Make that call. Take that first step. You – and your family – deserve it.  *Names have been changed to protect identities.

Caribbeantan

Sunless tanning with Caribbeantan

Sunless tanning, also known as self-tanning, spray tanning or fake tanning refers to the effect of a suntan without the sun. I find that when it comes to tanning it is a little bit like trying to find a foundation shade to match your skin tone, a very daunting task. There is never enough information on what shade to choose and how to go about it. This article will explain what spray tanning is about, how it works as well as bust some myths about it. About Caribbeantan: Caribbeantan was born out of pure inspiration back in 2003, when we saw a need for a better, safer way to achieve a beautiful, bronzed holiday look, without damaging your skin by exposing it to harmful UV rays or harsh chemicals.  The Caribbeantan Professional Salon System was the first professional self-tanning salon application system in South Africa, which subsequently sparked the Salon Spray Tan phenomenon. In 2007, Caribbeantan became available on the shelves of beauty stores, which contributed to it quickly becoming consumers’ number one choice for self-tanning. Caribbeantan is now available at most drug store chains and the bigger online retailers in South Africa.  The Science Behind Self-Tan What is DHA? The active ingredient in most self-tanning products is DHA (Dihydroxyacetone). DHA is a colourless sugar that interacts with the dead cells located in the stratum corneum of the epidermis. As the sugar interacts with the dead skin cells, a colour change occurs. This change usually lasts about five to seven days from the initial application. Caribbeantan products contain specially formulated active ingredients. One of these ingredients is DHA (Dihydroxyacetone – natural sugar cane derivative). When applied to the skin, DHA causes a chemical reaction with the skin to produce a tan, much like the sun, but without the UVA and UVB damage to the skin.  Caribbeantan is no ordinary sunless tanning brand. Our innovative professional self-tan and tan care products are designed to eliminate the fuss and mess associated with at-home tanning creams, as well as the costs associated with achieving the perfect tan. Let’s face it – beauty is mainly a confidence thing, and we believe everyone deserves to look and feel their best. The Caribbeantan “at home” tanning range consist of an amazing range of products to choose from to get that perfect professional tan in the comfort of your own home. The range consists of: Body Butter – to moisturise and also extend the life of your tan. Exfoliator – to exfoliate before your tan and help get rid of dead skin cells so your tan can develop properly and smoothly. Spritzer – This comes with a tanning mitt. You simply spritz and use your tanning mitt to apply evenly. Mousse – Apply like a lotion in circular motions evenly all over your body. Tan in a can – Comes in an aerosol can. Simply spray and pat down evenly with a tanning mitt. Shimmer Lotion – This product contains no DHA. It will bronze you up for the day and wash off in the shower. It also has specs of gold in it which really makes the body glow. Body Bronzer – Just like the Shimmer Lotion, this product contains no DHA. It will bronze you up for the day and wash off in the shower. It does not have any specs of gold in it. What to consider when choosing a product? Choosing the appropriate shade is extremely important since the skin type is extremely relevant in the tanning process. Never apply a darker shade on a fair skin.  The Caribbeantan range comes in 3 shades namely: A – for fair skin tones B – for medium skin tones C – for medium to dark skin tones Tip: If you are a first-time tanner, then go for a shade lighter. This way you can see how it looks and feels then decide if you wish to use a darker shade next time. How long does it last? A Caribbeantan tan can last from 4 to 8 days depending on the maintenance.  Reasons why a tan can fade: Not keeping the skin moisturised. The skin exfoliates naturally every 28 days. Keeping the skin super moisturised will stop the skin from flaking and help the tan last longer. Baths: taking long baths can fade the tan much quicker – rather take short showers. Swimming:  swimming for long periods will fade the tan quicker. Showering before the development time had passed.  Wait at least 8 hours before showering after applying your tan.  Some skin needs more time and can take up to 12 hours. Tanning myths: Self-tanning myth #1 Self tanner will make you turn orange. Absolutely NOT. You must choose the correct shade for your skin tone. Caribbeantan will always give you a beautiful bronzed natural looking tan. Self-tanning myth #2 Self-tanner will stain your clothes & your sheets. Caribbeantan is water soluble and will wash off easily from clothes & sheets. Self-tanning myth #3 Self-tanner will stain your palms. Use a Caribbenatan mitt to apply and protect the drier parts of your skin like palms, elbows & knees with our Body Butter which acts as a barrier cream. Self-tanning myth #4 There is no right way to apply self-tan. Wrong! Always follow the directions on the packaging upon application to get the best-looking tan. There are also general guidelines you should be following like shaving and exfoliating beforehand. Allow 6-8 hours for your tan to develop and refrain from activities, such as, swimming while your tan is developing. This will ensure that you get the most gorgeous natural looking tan. For me self-tanning is about looking & feeling confident. It evens out my skin tones and makes me look healthy. It also hides stretch marks and cellulite. When I look good, I feel good, and it just gives me that confidence boost and enhances my mood.

Nintendo

Which Switch is which?

I’m hoping by now that most parents have heard about the Nintendo Switch. If you haven’t, here’s your chance to find out why this is one of the most family-friendly consoles around, or if you have it’s your chance to figure out which one would be the best fit for your family.   Launched in 2017, the Switch took the gaming world by storm as it launched a year or so after its competitors, primarily based on its versatile nature. Small and already portable in nature, players can dock the console so the game is transmitted to their television where they are able to play it on a big screen, then reattach the controllers or Joy-Cons, and take it with them as the ultimate gaming system.  Unlike previous handheld consoles, from any manufacturer, the transmutable nature of the Switch garnered it a great deal of attention as well as a solid fan base from gamers everywhere.  An updated version with better hardware was released in 2019, increasing the power of the console and making it even more attractive to gamers.  Later the same year, Nintendo released the Nintendo Switch Lite. Unlike its companion, the Switch Lite is a single, handheld unit unable to dock to a television, and so functions entirely as a portable console.  It is slightly smaller than its big brother, but with an extended battery life that makes travelling that much easier, and comes in a range of colours to suit every taste. The games you’re able to purchase are the same as for the standard Switch, but you’re limited to those you can play only in handheld mode as opposed to one where you detach the Joy-Cons as the Switch Lite is an all-in-one.  If you’re considering buying a Switch for your family (I’m not going to limit this to your kids as they are equally attractive to adult gamers!), you’ll want to think about a couple of things.  The first is how you’re planning on using it and what types of games you want to play. Certain Switch games that require Joy-Cons to be removed to function with the motion sensors, will be difficult with the Lite because it’s a single unit. You’re not able to dock it with a television, so if you had to pair an extra set of Joy-Cons you’d struggle to see the smaller screen from a distance. If you’re looking for a small, portable console that you can pop in your bag easily for a trip, with a wide range of first party and third party games then the Switch Lite, which comes in at a lower price point than its counterpart is probably what you’re looking for.  If you’ve jumped on the gaming exercise bandwagon, or you like the idea of getting up and moving a little more than what you’ve traditionally come to expect from video games, then you might want to go with the classic Switch instead. Games like Ring Fit, which gamifies exercise and really works up a sweat, will need the Joy-Cons to work and you really need to dock it on the TV to get the best experience there.  It’s definitely still small enough to fit into your bag if you’re travelling, but being able to play on a bigger television screen is something you do much more than you might expect. It also comes with the full range of games. One of the biggest draw cards of the Switch for me, is the fact that it really does do what it says on the box. Set it up, play, network it with other friends and play together, then undock it and take it with you when you leave the house. It’s really that simple.  Pricing might be your biggest consideration when making your purchase. The classic Nintendo Switch currently retails at R7999, while the Nintendo Switch Lite retails at R4999.  Both are excellent consoles, and which once you make a part of your life, should ultimately depend on the experience you’re looking for out of it.  By Pippa Tshabalala on behalf of Nintendo Distributor SA

How to transition your hair care routine from summer to autumn

The onset of autumn marks the transition of many things in our beauty routines. Fresh, fruity fragrances are swapped out for spicier counterparts, lightweight skincare products are replaced with richer masks and creams and even our makeup looks are reinvented (hello dark lipstick and warm eyeshadow palettes!). So why shouldn’t the same principles apply to our hair care products? When the seasons change, it’s not uncommon for our hair to become dull or dry, and for our scalps to get a little bit irritated by the temperature drop. Summer usually brings its own hair care challenges: an oily scalp and dehydration or damage from UV exposure, sea water or chlorine. When temperatures drop, these concerns may change to static, a dry or irritable scalp, frizz and brittle hair. Establishing a routine that specifically caters to these issues while offering some repair to the damage done in summer, can help you achieve good hair days all throughout autumn. Follow these tips for a smooth seasonal transition. Increase moisture When the temperature drops, the humidity in the air decreases, which may lead to dry hair. Throw some indoor heating into the mix (heaters are known to zap moisture from the hair!) and you may be left with dull, brittle and dry hair. Now is the time to switch over to moisturising hair care products. Creightons Argan Smooth Moisture Rich Shampoo (R99.95) and Conditioner (R99.95) is infused with Moroccan argan oil and silk proteins to restore and nourish. This combo replenishes lost moisture while leaving hair silky soft and more manageable. If you prefer a plant‐based option, try Renpure’s Keratin & Argan Restorative Shampoo (R149.95) and Conditioner (R149.95). This duo cleanses and nourishes dull and damaged hair while adding shine and vibrancy. The oil‐rich conditioner helps seal and protect the hair from further damage. A weekly or bi‐weekly hair mask works wonders to re‐hydrate and restore moisture. Harness the power of argan oil with Marc Anthony’s Argan Oil Ultra Hydrating Conditioning Mask (R65.95) – pure argan oil, keratin and grapeseed oil treat dry and dull hair while protecting against spilt ends and breakage. For a major hydration boost, we recommend OGX® Hydrate & Repair + Argan Oil of Morocco Hair Mask (R209.95). This creamy mask intensely hydrates while locking in moisture, plus it detangles (bonus!) and helps strengthen hair. Heat protection Women tend to use heat styling tools more often during the colder months, probably due to the fact that in summer we’re in and out of the pool and wash our hair more often. Because hair is naturally drier during autumn, it’s important to take extra care when applying heat. Apply a heat protectant product every time before you blow dry, flat iron or style your hair. Remove build-up If you’re styling your hair more frequently during autumn, then chances are you’re using more styling mousses, gels, hairsprays or waxes too. If not shampooed thoroughly, this can lead to build-up on the hair, which not only leaves the hair looking dull, but it can also lead to an itchy scalp. We recommend using a clarifying shampoo once a week to remove build‐up. You can also do a double shampoo (like the salons do) every couple of days to ensure all impurities are removed. Try HASK’s invigorating and purifying Tea Tree Oil and Rosemary Shampoo (R179.95), which helps lift build‐up and impurities while nourishing the scalp for refreshed, healthy‐looking hair, or OGX Purifying + Charcoal Detox Shampoo and Conditioner (R199.95 each). This clarifying blend infused with coconut charcoal and kaolin clay busts through build‐up and rescues congested hair by offering a deep (yet gentle) clean. Take care of your scalp It’s not just our hair that takes a beating when the season changes; the scalp can get dry (which often leads to flaking) or irritable and itchy. Dandruff is also more prevalent in the colder months. Some experts argue that this is because we tend to wash our hair less often during the colder months, while others put it down to the scalp’s irritable reaction to dry and cold air. A thorough scalp‐care routine is essential. A scalp mask can remove build‐up and residue, hydrate the scalp and soothe irritation. Marc Anthony’s Detox Instant Cooling Scalp Treatment (R179.99) provides instant cooling relief for a dry or irritated scalp. Created with peppermint, castor oil, aloe vera juice and witch hazel, it may also be used as a pre‐wash treatment to help remove build‐up by gently loosening dirt, grime and oils. HASK’s multi‐benefit Tea Tree Oil & Rosemary 5-in-1 Leave-in Spray (R179.95) is infused with an invigorating blend of tea tree oil and rosemary to help condition hair and promote a healthy‐feeling scalp (it has a soothing and cooling effect), add shine, detangle and tame frizz. Celebs like Hillary Duff, Selena Gomez and Megan Thee Stallion have already jumped on board this trend and are serving up major hair inspo. If you’re going the platinum route, we suggest investing in good quality silver shampoo and conditioner to brighten and maintain your colour, and prevent brassiness. PRO:VOKE Touch Of Silver Colour Care Shampoo (R119.95) and Conditioner (R119.95) are formulated with antioxidants and optical brighteners to safeguard your blonde, silver or platinum colour, while boosting shine. Don’t wash your hair every day While it’s important to shampoo your hair regularly, you can strip your hair and scalp of its natural moisture if you over‐shampoo. If you’re used to shampooing every day, we recommend skipping a day and opting for dry shampoo on the in‐between days. COLAB Dry Shampoo (R88.95) lengthens the time between regular shampoos without drying out your hair. Not only does it leave your hair looking clean and smelling fresh, but it leaves no white residue – a major drawing card!

It’s no secret that great hair starts with healthy hair and a healthy scalp. A range of salon-inspired shampoos, conditioners and hair treatments, OGX has just launched their NEW upgraded pH balanced OGX collection and we are we are beyond OGX-cited! Maintaining the correct pH value of the hair and scalp is essential for the overall health of hair. It has a powerful impact on the way your strands behave and even how other products interact with your hair and scalp. Keeping the best and improving the rest, their new science-based, salon-quality pH balanced formulas will help give you stronger strands with more shine, less frizz and long-lasting smoothness, thanks to its gently cleansing formulas that help to keep the hair and scalp balanced. Usually only found in the hair salons, OGX brings healthy hair science to the high street with their new pH balanced formulas that are designed to be much kinder on both your hair and scalp’s natural structure’s, giving long lasting benefits.  Wondering what pH is and how it works? We have all the answers! The pH (Potential Hydrogen) scale ranges from zero to 14, with zero being acidic and 14 being alkali. If your shampoo’s pH is too low, the ability to clean is compromised. If your shampoo’s pH is too high, it can cause damage and lead to unwanted frizz. It also makes your hair prone to static, breakage and tangles.  Believe it or not, the acidity level of your shampoos and conditioners largely affect the state of your strands and scalp. Your hair and scalp have a natural acidic pH, which helps to keep them both strong and protected from damage; this generally sits between 4.5 and 5.5. A normal and healthy pH balance helps to seal hair cuticles, prevent unwanted breakage and lock in natural oils, whilst acting as a barrier that helps fight bacteria and fungus. If this pH balance is disrupted, by using formulas that are not suitable to your hair and scalp pH, you can experience scalp discomfort such as itchiness and flaking as well as hair dryness. So, choosing a shampoo and conditioner as close as possible to your hair’s natural pH is crucial.  Packed with precious oils, exotic ingredients, and amazing fragrances that you and your hair will love, OGX’s luxurious pH balanced and sulfate free surfactant formulas put the ‘care’ back into haircare by respecting and nurturing both your hair and scalp without the stripping of natural oil sebum.  Available in tropical blends with Argan Oil, Biotin & Collagen, and Brazilian Keratin Oil, OGX’s newly upgraded pH balanced collection offers everything that your tresses need:  Now pH balanced, the newly upgraded collection: Has a gentler formula that helps prevent hair damage Keeps hair shiny Protects hair colour Provides better frizz control Reduces split ends Delivers better hair movement Provides long lasting hair and scalp moisturisation Packed with so much good-for-your-hair goodness, the Ever Straightening + Brazilian Keratin Therapy Shampoo and Conditioner, infused with coconut oil, keratin proteins, avocado oil and cocoa butter, is sure to make straight, curly or wavy hair super happy with a brilliant, luminescent glow. World Milk Day reminds us why milk is great for busy parents and families

There’s little doubt that our pandemic experience over the past year, has increased our focus on our family’s health and well-being.  The trend towards ‘functional foods’, those with benefits beyond simple nutrition, has been accelerated and is likely to carry through into our post-Covid lifestyles. In this quest for healthier eating, many of us are discovering more about some of the foods that have been our favourites since childhood.  Milk is a good example.  It’s a whole food with a unique combination of nutrients that contribute to health at all stages of life. 1 June is the celebration of World Milk Day, and it highlights that dairy offers the family multiple benefits, from meeting our daily energy requirements and promoting gut health, to helping us get a good night’s sleep and strengthening our immune systems.  As a parent, dairy has your back Dairy gives everyone in your family nutritional support to help cope with busy and demanding days. Always delicious and amazingly versatile, it’s a favourite kids’ food. That’s such a blessing because dairy is a powerful daily nutritional boost, ideal for growing bodies.  Registered dietitian at Rediscover Dairy, Maretha Vermaak says, “Milk is a source of valuable nutrients such as good quality protein, naturally occurring sugars, and micronutrients such as vitamins and minerals and an array of different fats. This one-of-its-kind nutritional profile offers a range of benefits from building bones and strengthening teeth, to supporting digestion and the immune system.” It’s so convenient to use, any time of the day, and in so many different ways. Dairy can easily be part of every meal, breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as snacks and lunchboxes.  Including milk, maas, yoghurt or cheese in your family’s diet three times a day will help to ensure that your body gets what it needs.  Check out these family-focused dairy ideas from Rediscover Dairy.   Energy to get your family through the day – Dairy foods deliver a package of naturally occurring nutrients that are easily absorbed by the body while also providing energy. Vitamin B12 helps with energy metabolism and also keeps both adults and kids mentally alert throughout the day.  The protein in dairy is complete, which means it provides all the essential amino acids needed to build and repair body tissues. Essential amino acids cannot be made by our bodies and need to be taken in from protein-rich foods. Milk protein also makes you feel fuller for longer and can help to prevent unnecessary snacking. For the active family, milk and flavoured milk also offers a good rehydration option after high energy games, sports and outdoor family fun, while also helping with muscle recovery and repair.  Gut health for overall wellbeing – Young or older, a healthy gut microbiome – your intestinal community of microorganisms – supports overall health and wellbeing. Fermented dairy foods such as yoghurt, maas and kefir provide probiotics, which are active bacterial cultures that benefit the gut microbiome and impact on overall health. Adequate, daily portions of yoghurt, maas and kefir in your family’s eating regime helps to promote the diversity of the gut microbiota.  Strong immunity supports a productive and active lifestyle – We are all concerned about keeping healthy and warding off infections and illnesses that may impact on our family’s wellbeing. Eating a balanced diet that includes foods from all the different food groups will help build a strong immune system, so that each member of the family can lead a productive and active lifestyle. The protein, vitamin A and zinc provided by milk are especially beneficial in keeping immune systems strong, and the probiotics provided by fermented dairy products give extra support. A good night’s sleep – It’s true, a glass of warm milk at night will help you and your children sleep more peacefully. Elevated stress levels often interfere with our ability to get a good night’s rest. Milk contains the amino acid tryptophan and our bodies use tryptophan to produce the ‘feel-good’ hormone serotonin, which aids relaxation.  Dairy is affordable all-round nutrition Milk and dairy are nutrient rich, packed with many essential nutrients, and are definite nutritional value for money. By just adding milk, maas or yoghurt to a meal, you can make healthy food choices and give your family much-needed nutrients to stay strong and healthy.  Celebrate World Milk Day  Milk and dairy are worth celebrating indeed! Join in on 1 June this year and be part of World Milk Day. Connect with Rediscover Dairy on Facebook and Instagram and tap into all the great ways to include dairy in your family’s healthy lifestyle.

Bonitas – innovation, life stages and quality care

Boosting your immune system

The global pandemic has highlighted more than ever the need to stay healthy and keep our immune systems as strong as possible.  It is well documented that people with  co-morbidities and poorly functioning immune systems are at the highest risk of getting really ill from Covid-19.  Although you cannot suddenly reverse a co-morbidity or instantly boost your immune system, now is a good time to make your health and natural defences a priority.  Dr Morgan Mkhatshwa, Head of Operations at Bonitas Medical Fund offers some input as to how to boost our immune system and keep it that way.  What is the immune system? The immune system is a complex network of cells and proteins that defend the body against infection.  It also keeps a record of every germ (microbe) it has ever defeated, so it can recognise and destroy the microbe quickly if it enters the body again. Dr Mkhatshwa stresses the fact that Covid-19 is a novel (new) pathogen which means our bodies don’t have any existing antibodies to mount a defence. For that reason, it remains imperative to continue wearing masks and practising social distancing, hand hygiene and cough etiquette. Can over-the-counter vitamins and supplements help?   There is no magic pill that will instantly boost your immune system. However, together with a healthy lifestyle habits, various supplements can boost your immune system and give you a fighting chance.  What are considered useful vitamins and supplements to take? The recommendation for general health is a combination of 5 essential vitamins and minerals to keep your body healthy. These include: Vitamin C:  Supplementing with Vitamin C has been shown to reduce the duration and severity of upper respiratory tract infections, including the common cold. This vitamin can also be found in oranges, grapefruit, broccoli, strawberries, red bell peppers and tomato juice. Vitamin D: Also fights off infections and maintains strong bones. Vitamin D has been highly researched in connection with Covid-19 because of its effect on the immune system. – it is found in salmon, mushrooms, milk, cereals and breads. Studies have shown that Vitamin D can expedite healing and stall inflammation in the respiratory system but there has not been robust clinical evidence to prove its use against Covid-19. Vitamin A:Helps regulate the immune system and protects against infections by keeping your tissues and skin healthy – it can be found in sweet potatoes, carrots, apricots and spinach. Vitamin E: Is an essential antioxidant that helps fight cell damage. Nuts and peanut butter are filled with Vitamin E. Zinc: Works as an antioxidant and boost the metabolism along with healing wounds.  Meat, shellfish, beans/legumes and nuts/seeds are high zinc foods. Zinc is needed for immune cell development and communication and plays an important role in inflammatory response. A deficiency in this nutrient significantly affects your immune system’s ability to function properly, resulting in an increased risk of infection and disease. It has also been highly researched in the fight against Covid-19 but sadly has not shown any proven clinical results. Taking a deep breath – the science behind breathing and the immune function Your mental state influences your physical health. Our immune and lymphatic systems are chemical based so we are essentially a collection of chemicals, from our brains to our bones.  The air we breathe converts into chemicals that we need to fuel our cells. The way we breathe matters and even impacts our body chemistry. The physiological responses to deep, controlled, mindful breathing is so profound that if we could bottle them and sell them as drugs, they’d be worth a fortune.  Learn to exhale, activate your diaphragm, breathe deeply and work on fixing your posture. Simply thinking about better breathing will trigger positive immune responses. Breathing slowly and deeply is one of the most effective things you can do right now for your wellbeing. The immune function and auto-immune disease are complex topics. The state of our health is not black and white, nor can it be affected by one-stop solutions. A holistic approach to health will always win against quick fixes. Once we understand that, improvements in these essential body systems can happen naturally.  Will the flu vaccine help your immunity?  Flu vaccines have been shown to reduce the risk of influenza illness, hospitalisation and death. Not only will flu vaccinations reduce the risk of getting flu but are an important conservation measure for scarce health care resources. This remains a concern with the ongoing the Covid-19 pandemic.  A protective antibody response takes about 2 weeks to develop so should be taken early.  The third wave of Covid-19 in South Africa, as predicted by The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), has begun and Dr Mkhatshwa recommends doing everything you can to boost your immune system, according to your personal preference.   In terms of Covid-19, it’s especially important to understand that no supplement, diet or other lifestyle modification, other than social distancing and proper hygiene practices can protect you.

Now is the best time to start your IPL and laser hair removal journey – here’s why

Have you ever wondered why skincare professionals recommend certain procedures during certain seasons? As summer comes to an end and we head into the colder months, you may want to consider booking those treatments you’ve been postponing. The perfect time for the IPL skin treatments or laser hair removal sessions you’ve been thinking about, is now! But what makes the autumn and winter months more suitable? When undergoing IPL treatments or laser hair removal, it is absolutely essential to keep the treated area out of the sun. Laser treatments can make your skin more sensitive to the sun’s harmful rays, and if laser-treated skin is exposed to the sun, it could lead to hyperpigmentation. Although the sun still emits UV rays during the colder months, we are typically more covered up, and spend less time outdoors, minimising the risk of sun exposure. So now that you have the green light, which treatments should you choose? Pulse Dermatology & Laser has a variety of laser treatments suitable for the upcoming months: Pain-Free Laser hair removal Tired of shaving, plucking and waxing? Pain-Free, Hair-Free is the next generation of laser hair removal. Virtually pain-free, it is an effective and permanent hair reduction solution that takes cutting-edge medical laser technology and combines it with the comfort and convenience of a trip to the spa. Suitable for everyone, this procedure is safe for all skin types, hair types and most hair colours, and can be performed on almost any body part, including legs, arms, bikini line, back, stomach, face and neck. There is no down time, the treatment is quick and easy and you get complete coverage with no missed spots.  Laser hair removal is done in a series of around 4 – 6 treatments, each one a couple of weeks apart. Winter is the perfect time to have these treatments done, as you’ll be smooth and fuzz-free in time for summer! Plus, being covered up in warm winter clothing means you won’t accidently expose the treated areas to UV rays.  IPL Skin Rejuvenation Photo Rejuvenation is a non-invasive treatment that provides an effective way to correct and treat skin damage without disruption of the skin’s surface, producing younger and healthier looking skin on the face, neck, chest and hands. It can be tailored to your individual condition and skin type, offering you a personalised and targeted treatment plan. IPL treatments are performed using a handheld device that delivers a broad spectrum of light onto the skin’s surface. The wavelengths of light penetrate deep into the skin tissue to stimulate the cells beneath the skin’s surface, and triggers the body’s response to eliminates injured tissues and dead skin cells.  IPL treatments are typically administered in a series of 4 – 6 treatments, performed at intervals of a minimum of 3 weeks. Spreading the treatment over this period provides a gradual improvement of the skin, minimal amount of adverse effects and preserves the important “no downtime” feature of the program. IPL Skin Treatments using Photo Rejuvenation will effectively: Treat broken veins and capillaries Reduce redness caused by broken capillaries and Rosacea Eliminate spider veins Treat imperfections from sun damage and photo-ageing age spots Even out skin colour for a more youthful rejuvenated look Decrease fine lines and wrinkles Treat enlarged pores, acne and acne scarring Prolonged sun exposure is to be avoided for 4 weeks before, as well as for the 4 weeks following the treatment. A total sun block should be applied. If further treatment is needed a commitment to stay out of the sun is necessary. If there is direct sun exposure there are certain complications that may occur. Because of the dangers of exposing IPL treated skin to the sun, this is also a fantastic treatment to schedule for the winter months. Building muscle the healthy whey!

One of South Africa’s leading collagen pioneers, Harvest Table, has recently added to its innovative range of health-boosting products with the launch of its Power Shakes, specially-formulated sports nutrition for athletes of all shapes and sizes. Catherine Clark, the Owner and Founder of Harvest Table, says that as part of a healthy lifestyle, a growing number of South Africans are getting actively involved in sports on a regular basis. At the same time, consumers are becoming increasingly educated about their health and are looking for nutritional solutions that will boost their performance and their health.  “Attitudes towards exercising have changed during the past decade but sports supplements have not necessarily kept pace with the latest research,” Catherine says. “We identified a gap in the market to supply good quality sports nutrition that can help both the race snakes as well as the weekend warriors build muscle, sustain higher levels of activity and minimise injuries.”  So, Catherine and her team put their heads together to formulate a nutritional shake that would benefit athletes’ overall health and wellness. The result is a tasty range of three shakes that pack a powerful combination of grass-fed whey concentrate, collagen and I-glutamine, a unique blend that offers a wide range of health benefits. “Whey is a key ingredient in our shakes as athletes have been using it to build muscle for years. But whey is often over-processed and can be damaging to the digestive system, leading to discomfort and even ulcers,” Catherine explains. “To overcome this, we’ve used a good quality grass-fed whey that delivers the same muscle-building properties but is much gentler on the gut,” Catherine explains. While whey is seen as the prerequisite for building strong muscles, joint maintenance and bone strength are equally important for athletic performance. This is where collagen is recognised as the rising star in sports nutrition. Collagen is a basic building block for strong bones which are essential to support muscle development and help prevent injuries whilst also ensuring faster recovery times. “Collagen is a complex protein that acts like a glue in the connective tissues throughout your body. It has a special combination of 19 amino acids that help to fight inflammation and to repair, maintain and restore muscle mass. In fact, your tendons and ligaments are made up of around 75% collagen so supplementing your diet with collagen will help to reduce potential pain or injury and help you to recover, even after a strenuous workout,” Catherine explains. While injury prevention and quick recovery are important, most sportsmen and women want bags of energy as this is what really makes a massive difference when it comes to physical performance. Again, this is where collagen really is a stand-out. The amino acid glycine is found abundantly in collagen and this is needed to form creatine, which as any athlete knows, promotes healthy muscle growth and produces energy.  “The combination of ingredients in our Power Shakes ensure that you have more energy to move and exercise and more lean muscle on board to keep your metabolism fired up, making it much easier to power up your performance. Whether you’re hitting the road for a gentle five-kilometre training run or gearing up for a 100km bicycle race, you will have the optimal nutritional balance to go out harder and bounce back faster,” says Catherine.  The Harvest Table Power Shake range includes three varieties: Power, Endurance and Repair, each of which provides the nutritional support required to target a specific performance requirement. The Power Shake range can be ordered directly from the Harvest Table online shop at www.harvesttable.co.za Follow Catherine on Instagram: @whole_healthy_me.

AMASI is simply amazing!

Amasi (also known as maas) is a well-loved product that forms part of many cultures within South-Africa. Our ancestors traditionally prepared this fermented drink by storing unpasteurised cow’s milk in a calabash or hide sack. This allowed the milk to ferment. Today amasi is made by adding live cultures to full-cream pasteurised cow’s milk. These live cultures help the fermentation process along, which gives amasi its distinct sour taste and additional health effects.  This Mzansi culinary treasure is absolutely great for baking! Amasi is a perfect substitute if you can’t find buttermilk near you. Here is a fabulous, quick and easy Rediscover Dairy scone recipe you can try: You will need: 250 ml amasi (maas) or buttermilk  1 cup self-raising flour  1 cup grated cheddar cheese  ½ teaspoon salt 1 egg Pinch of cayenne pepper (optional)  Some extra goodies you can add to the batter:  Chopped spring onions (or chives) topped with feta Melted butter and a little honey which makes a pouring sauce for the top Directions: 1. Pre-heat oven to 180°C. Spray and Cook a muffin tin. 2. Add all the ingredients to a big bowl and mix until incorporated. Do not overmix, as it could result in dense scones. 3. Spoon the mixture into your muffin pan. Pro-Tip: use an ice-cream scoop to get equal sized scones. 4. Bake until golden brown 15–20 min, or until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean.  Take out and rest on a wire rack. Serve and enjoy!    The Rediscover Dairy team loves this recipe because it is quick and easy to prepare and suitable for many occasions from breakfast, snacks, quick dinner served with cheese. It’s made with amasi, but you can use plain yoghurt or milk Amasi is good for the whole family: the live cultures in amasi help to build a strong digestive system and keep the immune system strong  like other fermented milk products, amasi is generally tolerated well by people who are lactose intolerant. it is also a good meal replacement when your household’s meat stores are low.  For better health, make amasi part of your three servings of dairy a day!

Why winter is a great time to peel with Lamelle

They say summer bodies are made in winter and the same can be said about great-looking skin. After all, the chilly months are the ideal ones to invest in a course of peels with Lamelle. Peel and reveal   We all know unprotected sun exposure is bad news for our skin. After all, dermatologists will be quick to tell you that more than 80% of premature ageing is caused by ultraviolet (UV) radiation. However, when you’ve had a peel or any other kind of treatment that removes the uppermost layers of your skin it will always become more sensitive to the sun. Not forever – but certainly while your skin is healing. Alas, being more likely to burn puts you on the fast track to lines and pigmentation. So, ironically, you can undo months’ worth of improvements made via peeling with just a few minutes of unprotected time in the sun. Clearly, the winter months are ideal as a ‘peel season’. While you won’t be hiding away like a hibernating bear, it’s only natural that you’ll spend more time indoors. You also don’t have to worry about having to turn down invitations to sunny events like pool parties or tennis matches during those critical post-peel days when your skin is healing.  Lastly, there’s another reason why winter is prime time for peeling and that’s the dryness factor. The cold, dry winter air will always attempt to rehydrate itself by leeching the moisture from your skin. A series of peels is a great way to help you get your glow on while ridding your skin of excess dead skin cells – a by-product of winter dryness. Do post-care like a pro  Not everyone’s post-peel journey will be alike and that means the type of products you’ll require to heal will vary. Happily, a highly-skilled Lamelle therapist can prescribe the best post-care regime. As an example, if your main concern was to soften fine lines, shift dull skin and improve mild pigmentation, you’d benefit from a series of our Alpha Peels. You might be a little red and sensitive after each treatment, but you wouldn’t experience any downtime. You could gently cleanse your skin using Lamelle Serra Cleansing Gel (our extra gentle soap-free cleanser) then hydrate and soothe using our Barrier Repair Cream. It speeds up recovery time thanks to medical-grade lanolin that mimics your skin’s natural lipids and creates a moist wound-healing environment. You can then protect your skin from the sun using our most innovative sunscreen to date, Lamelle Helase 50+.  Want to address deeper wrinkles or more severe sun damage lines? In this case, you’d have to completely change the structure of your dermis and our retinol-based Retistore Plus Peel can deliver great results in exchange for a little downtime. While your skin might flake for a couple of days, you can apply our ‘bandage in a bottle’, Restorative Balm. It’s ideal to help your skin recover from ‘injuries’ that affect your full dermis as it won’t sting when it’s applied. It’s also semi-occlusive so it can trap moisture within your skin but still allows it to breathe. During the peak ‘healing days’ when you’re using Restorative Balm you won’t want to go anywhere near the sun. But the day you do step aside, again, we recommend investing in Helase 50+. This way, you’ll get full-spectrum protection and can maintain your results and reveal a fresher, more radiant and evenly-toned skin – just in time for the party season!

The range includes three yoghurt flavours and three 100% fruit puree flavours packaged in the convenient new, bigger 200ml pouch. “We have created this larger pouch size with our consumers in mind, providing a new, innovative solution for babies and toddlers with growing appetites,” says Tamara Patel, Brand Manager for Squish at RFG. “The bigger Squish 200ml pouch is perfectly sized for growing kids, in a convenient format that parents want, in a size they want.” Patel explains that the latest extension to the Squish product range came after identifying the opportunity to introduce a larger pack-size, “The 200ml Squish range has been developed for parents who have grown to love Squish during their baby’s weaning journey, but are looking for a larger meal for their babies and toddlers as they grow older.” “Like all our Squish products, the utmost care has been taken to ensure that we offer our consumers the best product possible,” she adds. “We do not compromise on quality ingredients, there are no preservatives, colourants, flavourants or starch, and we fully control our supply chain, meaning we can control the quality of raw materials from the fields, right through to the end product.” She says, “Our Squish puree range is made from 100% fruit and vegetables, and is preservative, colourant and flavourant free with no added starch. Our 100% fruit and veg puree with yoghurt range is made with double cream yoghurt, not yoghurt powder, which offers us a notable point of difference.” “With our new bigger pouches, parents can rest assured they are offering their children the same goodness and great taste they have come to rely on from the Squish 110ml range,” she adds. “We understand that parents want the best for their children, but they are often pressed for time. With the extension of this larger pack size, they can feel confident in the knowledge that they are not compromising on the quality of ingredients for baby through to toddler.” “Over the past few years, we have seen a switch in consumer behaviour from jars to pouches. The pouch format offers a safe, hygienic and convenient offering,” Patel explains. “We saw the need to provide a larger pack to parents of older babies and toddlers. Where they would have previously purchased two pouches per meal for their growing little ones, the 200ml pouch is an all-in-one meal for an older baby, or the perfect lunchbox snack for a toddler”. The Squish range now comprises a wide range of purees in 110ml and 200ml pouches, and a 100% fruit and veg pressed juice range ensuring that parents find a range of convenient, quality products to help them on their weaning journey, from starting solids right through to toddlers and beyond. The products are available nationwide at top-end retail, wholesale and specialist chains – find Squish in the baby food section. Bonitas – innovation, life stages and quality care

Free Flu Vaccines

Annually, seasonal influenza (flu) kills around 11 500 people in South Africa. Which is why Bonitas Medical Fund offers flu vaccines annually at no cost – to every member and beneficiary. The Fund has announced that the cost of administering the flu vaccine – as well as other vaccines covered from the risk benefit – will also be covered or subsidised for its members. Flu vaccines have been shown to reduce the risk of contracting flu, becoming seriously ill if you do, being hospitalised and even death. Flu vaccinations are also an important conservation measure for scarce health care resources, which remain a concern during the ongoing the Covid-19 pandemic. According to Principal Officer of Bonitas, Lee Callakoppen, the World Health Organization (WHO) has also recommended that high risk groups consider having the flu vaccination in 2021, particularly because of Covid-19. ‘As part of our preventative care benefit, we offer free flu vaccinations annually to our members to help maintain their health and immunity.  ‘Due to the unique circumstances created by the pandemic and our members being financially constrained, we have negotiated with our network of over 60 pharmacy groups – which include Dischem, Clicks and PnP – to cover cost of the flu administration fee, capped at R50. However, should a provider charge more than R50, the shortfall will be for the member’s account.’ He says the Scheme is financially stable and sound and has set aside funds to cover the flu vaccine – estimating around 40 000 doses will be utilised during the 2021 season – along with the administration costs.  Although the flu vaccination is free to all members, the Scheme (guided by WHO and the Department of Health) highly recommends that the following groups consider being vaccinated: Healthcare workers Individuals over the age of 65 years  People with comorbidities like heart disease, diabetes or lung disease  Pregnant women  People living with HIV and AIDS  ‘We believe the best and first form of defence against flu is the vaccine,’ says Callakoppen. ‘And we suggest people get vaccinated soon, ahead of the flu season – which traditionally runs from May to August because the protective antibodies take about two weeks to develop. However, we know that protocols in place for Covid-19 such as social distancing, wearing a mask, handwashing and sanitisation will also go a long way in protecting against us against getting flu.’ In addition to the free flu vaccination and as part of the preventative care benefit, Bonitas also covers the costs of a pneumococcal vaccine for beneficiaries over the age of 65 years once every 5 years and childhood immunisation, this includes the vaccine admin fee.

Dairy: your bone-building partner throughout life

Most people only think about their bones once they get a fracture or reach older age. Just think about the tears and pain when your child breaks a bone.  When he or she breaks a bone for a second time, you might ask yourself “is there anything I can do to help prevent this?” Bones are the body’s foundation. All muscles anchor itself to our bone structure, providing support and structure, and at the same time it also helps protect our organs. Being proactive and building healthy, strong bones is therefore critical to leading a long, healthy, active and independent life. Bones are living tissue, constantly in a state of renewal, so building and maintaining bones is a lifelong affair. The key to achieving strong bones involves a mix of weight bearing exercise, calcium-rich foods such as milk, cheese and yoghurt and vitamin D from safe sun exposure, foods or a supplement. Not looking after bones can increase the risk of osteoporosis, a disease which sees bones become brittle and at high risk of fracture. In South Africa, osteoporosis affects one in three women and one in five men over the age of 60 years. Worldwide osteoporosis causes more than 8.9 million fractures each year; resulting in an osteoporotic fracture every three seconds! Hip fractures are invariably associated with chronic pain, reduced mobility, disability and an increase degree of dependence. This becomes a real worry if we consider the statistics that in white women (having a higher risk for osteoporosis), the lifetime risk for a hip fracture, is 1 in 6, compared with a 1 in 9 risk of a diagnosis of breast cancer. Bone health is determined by both genetics and lifestyle factors, and adopting a bone-friendly lifestyle at any age can help reduce the risk of osteoporosis. As part of a bone-friendly lifestyle, research confirms that milk and other dairy product remain the number one food source of calcium to support bone health. Childhood presents the best opportunity to build bone strength and ultimately reduce the risk of osteoporosis in later years. Along with the rest of their body, children’s bones are growing rapidly throughout this period, so it’s critical that children receive enough daily calcium to ensure their bones achieve their maximum strength. Teenage years are another massive growth period. Over a period of two years (12-14 for girls and 13-15 for boys) teens’ bodies build one-quarter (25%) of their adult bone mass. Therefore, it’s a critical time for teenagers to exercise and stockpile their bones with calcium from the diet. Between the ages of 12-18 years calcium requirements increase and teens in general need even more milk and dairy products (3 to 4 serves from the dairy each day), where a serving of dairy is typically a cup (250ml) of milk or amasi,  2 tubs (200 ml)of yoghurt, two slices or 2 tablespoons of grated (40g) of cheese, or half a cup (120g) of cottage or ricotta cheese. Building strong bones also requires exercise. Like muscles, bones respond to weight-bearing exercise like running or brisk walking, lifting weights or sports involving jumping. When bones are made to bear more weight than they are used to, they develop increased strength or bone density. After the age of 30 it is important to maintain your bone density by consuming 2 – 3 servings of dairy a day. This is called the maintenance phase. The bone loss phase starts at 52 years for women, and 65 years for men. During the bone loss phase, calcium needs increases again and older people need to consume more calcium rich foods. Registered dietitian at Rediscover Dairy, Maretha Vermaak, says: “Dairy is a valuable source of calcium in the diet. Calcium from milk and other dairy products are easily absorbed, meaning that your body can use most of the calcium effectively to build and maintain strong bones. Calcium obtained from food also enhances the positive effect of physical activity on bone mass during growth.”

Skincare shouldn’t have to sting: Understanding sensitive skin

Struggling with very dry skin? There’s a good chance you’re also the sensitive type. And no, it’s not because The Notebook makes you cry. Both conditions – sensitive skin and dry skin – share an underlying cause and that’s a disrupted barrier function. But first, what is that exactly? And if yours isn’t working properly, how do you go about fixing it? Happily, Lamelle’s researches have been studying dry and sensitive skin for decades so we can answer both questions with expert advice. The great barrier Imagine the surface of your skin as a tiled roof. There are many things that can damage these tiles – from using products that are too exfoliating or too much unprotected sun exposure. Either way, once they’re damaged, they lift up and allow your skin’s natural moisture to escape and irritants to get in. The result is skin that’s not only unquenchably dry, but over sensitive due to all those gaps in its “armour”. While you’d think solving the problem would be as easy as applying a heavy, thick moisturiser, it’s not quite that simple. Those missing tiles mean that any hydration you put in will just as easily slip out due to evaporation. However, if you use the right type of hydrator, you’ll be back in business. To explain, your skin’s outermost cells (or tiles!) exist in a waxy layer of lipids. If you’re to repair a damaged barrier, you’re going to need to apply a product that contains a mix of lipids naturally found in healthy skin. These will essentially “seal” it, helping it retain its moisture and protect it from the irritants that can cause stinging, redness and inflammation. At last! Real relief! Once you know what to look for in a barrier repair cream, it’s easy to find a brilliant one, such as Lamelle Serra Restore Cream. It contains patented Ceramide-P to help create a multi-layered lipid structure that mimics healthy human skin. It’s a fantastic long-term solution for anyone with typically dry or sensitive skin. If, however, you’re experiencing an acute bout of sensitivity, having an allergic reaction or have exceptionally dry skin, you’ll want to know about Lamelle Serra Soothing Cream. It contains a double dose of ceramides as well as patented anti-redness and anti-itch technology. Another star product you’ll want in a dry and sensitive skin home care artillery is Serra Cleansing Gel. The former is a deliciously creamy-feeling soap-free cleanser specially formulated to carefully cleanse in a way that doesn’t strip away your skin’s newfound hydration. But what if it’s seriously sensitive…  Okay. So that’s the low down on sensitive skin. In short, it’s typically a symptom of an impaired barrier function. But what about sensitive skin syndrome (SSS)? In this case, you’re dealing with a medically diagnoseable condition characterised by skin that often experiences sensations like burning, itchiness, tightness and even pain despite no obvious trigger. In fact, a sufferer’s skin might not even show any visible symptoms, such as redness or dryness. Much like migraines, doctor’s still don’t fully understand SSS but research suggests it’s a neurosensory condition caused by having too many overstimulated TRVP1 receptors in the deeper layers of your skin. In light of this new knowledge, Lamelle have created Serra NSB. (The NSB stands for “Neuro-Sensory Barrier”.) Its star ingredients inhibits the expression of TRVP1 in the skin while “putting out the fire” via a potent amino acid anti-inflammatory. It can also help repair any barrier issues, should the sufferer have one, thanks to Ceramide-P. Ultimately, if you have dry skin, sensitive skin or even SSS, Lamelle’s Serra collection includes a solution. 5 Healthy Rules to Live by (no matter your age!)

Good health does not happen by accident; it’s a result of proactive, preventive, healthy choices that have an impact on your health today, tomorrow, and beyond, and according to Bianca Tromp, FUTURELIFE® dietitian, it is never too early (or too late!) to develop healthy habits. She says, “A healthy lifestyle is not only important during infancy and old age, but is crucial during all stages of life, including childhood, adolescence and adult years. Regardless of whether you are 12 or 75 years old, the impact of a healthy lifestyle should never be underestimated.” She adds that by following a few simple, healthy rules, we are all likely to share a common outcome – ongoing physical and emotional health as we age, “However, it all starts by reforming the simple choices we make each day.” Bianca offers five healthy rules that she believes we should all be living by (regardless of our age!): Rule 1: Watch your portions Why is it that even though you eat perceived healthy foods,  you can still be at an unhealthy weight? The problem often lies with portion control. Even too big a portion of healthy foods can cause unwanted weight gain. And, although you might see your portion sizes as “normal”, it might be time to reassess. So, what is a healthy portion size? For starches, choose low-GI starches, no more than the size of your fist. For lean meat, chicken and fish, have a portion the size and thickness of your palm. Vegetables should fill the rest of your plate, so include about two handfuls while limiting fats to the size of the tip of your thumb. Rule 2: Keep moving The one thing that those who live healthy, long lives have in common is physical activity. And, physical activity is not just good for your physical wellbeing, it also keeps you mentally and emotionally healthy too.  Plus, you don’t need to be a gym ‘bunny’ either. You can walk around the block in the evenings or spend time gardening… whatever you choose – just include at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity a week. Rule 3: Take care of your gut We often associate gut health with the absence of symptoms like bloatedness, constipation and diarrhoea, but did you know that 80% of your immune cells are in your gut? To support our immune system and keep our gut healthy we need a balance of probiotics (the “good” microorganisms) in our digestive tract.  Including a probiotic supplement can assist in maintaining this balance. FUTURELIFE® Bran Flakes and Barley with Probiotic Capsules is the perfect solution as it combines fibre and probiotics to support the functioning of the gut. Rule 4: Include protein in every meal Not only does protein provide the building block for muscle maintenance and synthesis, protein will also make you feel fuller for longer. This means less cravings and snacking on unhealthy foods. Aim to include a protein source in each meal and snack. Low saturated fat protein options include nuts, nut butters, eggs, soy, lean meat and chicken cuts, fish, beans and legumes. FUTURELIFE® also offers a range of High Protein products – from High Protein breads and bars to a High Protein shake and cereal. Rule 5: A good night’s rest Like breathing, sleep is a fundamental human requirement. And yet, so many of us do not get the required amount of sleep to function properly. Lack of sleep can cause high blood pressure, diabetes, heart attack, heart failure or stroke. Other potential problems include obesity, depression, impairment in immunity and can even affect your appearance! Making sure you get a good night’s rest (every night!) should be a top priority. The National Sleep Foundation recommends seven to eight hours of sleep for people over age 64 and seven to nine hours for ages 18 to 64. Kids need more sleep. “It takes more than five healthy rules to get from one to 85, but this is a great starting point!” Bianca concludes.

Could you have PCOS and not even know it?

Despite being incredibly common, affecting around 1 in 10 women, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is still one of the most underdiagnosed conditions around. So much so that, of those who have it, only 1 in 3 will be diagnosed. In short, there’s a fair chance you might have it – and a good chance you don’t realise it! PCOS tends to fly under the radar because signs can be easy to miss or attributed to something else. This is why it’s important to be aware of the condition and its symptoms, especially since getting the right treatment can be life-changing.  But first – what is PCOS? PCOS is a hormonal disorder that also affects your metabolism in a way that causes insulin resistance. Ultimately, your body stops listening to insulin’s “instruction” – to convert the sugar in your bloodstream to energy. Instead, after lingering in your blood for too long – essentially raising your blood sugar – the sugar ends up being stored away as fat. This is why those suffering from diabetes as well as PCOS tend to experience weight gain. Another side effect of insulin resistance is that it triggers your ovaries to produce higher-than-normal amounts of androgen, the male hormone. The results manifest invisibly as cysts on your ovaries. The visible signs, however, include acne, excessive hair growth in unwanted places such as your face and irregular or missed periods. If left untreated PCOS can lead to infertility, type 2 diabetes and even cardiovascular disease. In short, if you’ve got it, you really want to diagnose it and treat it. Know the signs The frustrating thing about PCOS is that it’s not always so easy to recognise the symptoms. Life gets busy so we don’t keep track of our periods. Weight gain can be attributed to getting older or skipping out on gym. That recent spate of chin pimples? Perhaps that’s just “maskne” or a stress breakout.  To make things even trickier, not every woman will develop all the signs. After all, it’s not unusual to develop PCOS and never spot as much as a single chin hair, let alone develop a mustache. Other less obvious symptoms include insomnia, fatigue and a craving for carbohydrates as well as anxiety or depression. When you consider that list, it’s easy to see how they could all be overlooked as just the side-effect of a stressful life mid-pandemic and not an extremely common syndrome. So here’s the good news   If you suspect you have PCOS you’ll be glad to know there’s a lot you can do about it but your first step is to visit your doctor or gynaecologist. They’ll be able to ask the right questions and run a simple series of tests to help you get a diagnosis. As far as treatment is concerned, this could include medication as well as making certain lifestyle changes. For example, eating a low glycaemic index (GI) diet and getting regular exercise will help you manage your blood sugar levels.  You can also manage your condition with our brand new ovarian health nutritional supplement – Ovaria by Lamelle Pharmaceuticals. It contains 4000mg of Myo-Inositol, the required dose clinically proven to reduce the symptoms of PCOS of women in their fertile era.  A naturally occurring sugar associated with the vitamin B family, Myo-Inositol helps reduce your androgen levels by normalising your blood’s insulin levels. The result is an improvement in many PCOS symptoms including weight gain, acne and hair growth. In fact, Ovaria is proven to reduce unwanted hair growth by 29% in just 6 months. It can also increase your ovulation rate – improving your chance of getting pregnant – in as little as 16 weeks and help normalise your menstrual cycle. You’re not alone  Ultimately, if you suspect you might be suffering from PCOS, don’t hesitate to chat with your doctor today. An early diagnosis means the sooner you’ll enjoy a better quality of your life while reducing your risk of PCOS-related conditions like diabetes. As far as treatment options go, you’ll have several to choose from and all of them can be enhanced by Ovaria. You’re not alone. Together, we can help put you back on the path to wellness.  Learn more: https://lamelle.co.za/ovaria

They have been the life boat with ventilators, oxygen and essential medical care to thousands of patients drowning in the rough seas of the Covid Pandemic. In years past, nurses have often felt overlooked and often undervalued. But when the World Health Organization declared 2020 as “The Year of the Nurse” a Global Pandemic was not anticipated.   Since then everything has at last changed! TODAY, AND EVERY DAY, WE HONOUR AND VALUE OUR NURSES!   THANK YOU!!! People have realized that nurses are not only the beating heart of the medical profession but the backbone of every healthcare facility in every country of the world! The Covid Pandemic has shone the spotlight on the critical shortage of professional nurses, not only in South Africa, but all over the world. The national Department of Health now faces the massive challenge of raising more funding, not only to open many more professional nursing posts, but to train more nurses! Patient/ staff ratios are currently high in public healthcare facilities, sometimes reaching 25<1. The South African Nursing Council (SANC) statistics report a decrease of + 9,000 nurses each year (emigration, retirement or death) with only +3,400 newly qualified nurses being added to the SANC Registration and subsequently, the countries Nursing Workforce annually.  The GOOD NEWS is that the Department of Health has appointed Dr. Kobie Marais, an exceptional nurse and Director of Nurse Education and Training, to lead a team of experts to address this urgent issue. The Strategic Plan will be announced soon and we are excited to see Nurse Education, Training and Practice rise to an outstanding level of excellence in South Africa, within the next few years.   THE WORST IS OVER BUT THE BATTLE NOT IS STILL TO BE WON! We are sending a message out to the beautiful people of South Africa:  Let’s keep cheering our nurses on as they bravely endure this Covid Marathon. The journey has been long but we believe the battle is almost done! Let’s keep encouraging them to not to give up until they have crossed the Covid Finishing Line!   FOR THE MONTH OF MAY……     If you or a loved one have been on the receiving end of compassion and kindness from an exceptional nurse, how about expressing gratitude to the all staff at your nearest public hospital or community clinic? A meaningful thank you card, flowers or home-baked treats all go a long way in showing gratitude in a tangible way. Round up your family and friends, mobilize colleagues and your company to help. We need to shout out a huge THANK YOU to our Exceptional Nurses, on behalf of our BEAUTIFUL RAINBOW nation!     THE NIGHT RUN SERIES to honour NURSES/HEALTHCARE WORKERS: Hosted by The Exceptional Nurse Campaign, the exciting 7km Night Runs will take place all over our nation, on every Saturday night of September, 2021. 5 Great reasons to shop & sell preloved children’s clothes

It’s a challenge to keep your children in style when they outgrow their trendy clothes so fast! With more people selling and shopping preloved clothing online, you can now keep your little ones in style, while spending less money; saving time; doing good for the planet and even making a bit of extra money!  Being a mom of two children and passionate entrepreneur, Aune Aunapuu, CEO and Founder of Yaga.co.za – the fastest-growing online marketplace for buying and selling preloved items –  decided to create the solution when she was unable to find a safe and hassle-free platform online to sell a preloved baby stroller.  Aune shares her five reasons why shopping and selling preloved children’s clothes is a great idea. 1. Keep Your Kids in Style:Shopping preloved clothing online means you can explore a variety of items, a diverse range of styles and many different brands that are always in fashion. Through preloved platforms like Yaga, parents can buy classic, vintage and stylish branded children’s items including Zara, Cotton On, Keedo, Naartjie and Truworths.  2. Save Money: Buying new children’s clothes is expensive and they outgrow their new clothes so quickly! You can get a lot more for your money by opting for preloved clothes, which are available at bargain prices and often at a fraction of the retail prices. You can replace an entire wardrobe of outgrown clothes without overspending.  3. Save Time: Because children grow so fast, it’s back to the shops every so often for a new wardrobe. Shopping preloved items online, on the other hand, saves you so much time usually wasted visiting shop after shop with a stroller and toddler in tow. Shopping preloved clothes online affords you the opportunity to shop an entire new wardrobe of trendy and branded items without ever leaving the house.  4. Do Good for the Planet: Buying and selling preloved can reduce your impact on the planet because it keeps fashion items in circulation, instead of it ending up in dumps or landfill. As most clothing items are processed with chemicals, the fact that preloved items are already pre-washed multiple times means that they are also less harmful for little ones wearing them close to their sensitive skin.  5. Make money!: All parents welcome a bit of extra money, so why not turn a wardrobe of outgrown fashion items into an extra income! Declutter your children’s wardrobes, organise the clothes your children have outgrown by size and season, and then sell these preloved fashion items online. Selling preloved baby and maternity wear is also super popular! Check out some of these trendy mummy Yaga Shops that sell cool items for children: https://www.yaga.co.za/whatreignwore and https://www.yaga.co.za/makeitrayne  For more information visit yaga.co.za.

Back to basics with DAIRY!

Balance and variety are key to a healthy diet. In recent years, the types of food choices available have steadily increased. As a result, consumers may be confused as to which foods are the best.  Getting back to basics may just be the answer to help consumers to make informed choices. A key message to ensure that your family sticks to the basics of healthy eating is to eat a variety of fresh whole foods daily. Maretha Vermaak, registered dietitian at Rediscover Dairy says: “Whole foods are foods that are unprocessed and unrefined, or processed and refined as little as possible. Examples of whole foods are whole grains, tubers, legumes, fruits, vegetables, and milk.” Milk as a whole food is convenient and versatile Milk has long been a staple food in a healthy diet, and with good reason. Milk is delicious and an important source of many important nutrients, conveniently packed into one product. Use milk as a refreshing drink as is, make a milky coffee (hot or cold),  enjoy it in smoothies, pour it over breakfast cereal or use it in a wide range of cooked and baked dishes. Get the power of milk on your side The South African Department of Health’s food-based dietary guidelines recommend two to three servings of milk, amasi or yoghurt every day. Examples of one serving of dairy are: 250 ml of milk, 200 ml of amasi/yoghurt and 40 g of hard cheese. The wide range of fat-free, low-fat and full-cream milk options remain an important source of nutritional goodness, providing plenty of variety and choice. How the nutrients in dairy work for you: Milk is an excellent source of calcium, good quality protein, and vitamin B12. The nutrients in dairy act as a team and it is this team work that is responsible for its many health benefits.   Good quality protein Provides all the essential amino acids (building blocks) you need Assists in bone health and muscle maintenance Calcium Essential for bone and dental health Vitamin B12 Good for brain health and sharpness Supports a healthy immune system and energy metabolism Vitamin A Supports a healthy immune system Promotes good eyesight, especially in low light Potassium Assists in heart health Helps keep blood pressure in check Phosphorous Important for growth, maintenance, and repair of body cells and tissue Vitamin B2 and magnesium Help in the production of energy Zinc Supports a healthy immune system Promotes skin health

How to beat winter dryness with Lamelle

A nice glass of red by the fire. Snuggling in bed with a book. There’s lots to love about winter. Alas, as the temperatures drop, so does the humidity level. Then, the dry, winter air tries to even the status quo by drawing moisture from whatever it can, including you! This why your skin feels so much drier in winter. It’s definitely not all in your head. It’s just science. To make things worse, many of us tend to take longer, much hotter showers or baths during the chillier months. Again, this isn’t good news for your skin because these can cause the type of inflammation that disrupts your skin’s barrier function, the upper most layers that essentially help you trap hydration. Happily, Lamelle has everything you need to help you beat winter dryness. Prep and prime To start, let’s make a clever swap regarding your cleanser. If you’re using something that contains a high concentration of foaming agents such as sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) it can be too “strippy” and only serve to dry you out further. Instead, switch to a no or very low SLS formula. Good examples of the latter would be our Serra Cleansing Gel, Nourish Daily Cleanse or Dermaheal Foaming Cleanser. Better yet, they’re all enriched with powerful antioxidants and anti-inflammatory ingredients. Next up, you’ll want to know about our Skin Essence Rejuvenate fluid, to be worn under your moisturiser. It’s packed with probiotic lysates that improve the health of your cells to help your skin hold onto more moisture and have a better response to any other active ingredients you apply. Another way to bump up your hydration levels – even before you’ve applied your daily moisturiser – is via our bestselling Corrective HA+ Serum. It’s made with four types of mega-plumping hyaluronic acid (HA), a molecule that occurs naturally in your skin with the ability to attract up to 1000 times its weight in water. It also contains HAFi fragments that stimulates your skin’s own hyaluronic acid production. Moisturise cleverly So, that’s your pre-game sorted. But what about the main event? While your current moisturiser may or may not be up to the task of helping you beat winter dryness, our Serra Restore Cream is! It contains cutting-edge ingredients that mimic that lipids in your skin’s bilayer, including our one-of-a-kind ceramide, Ceramide-P. Ultimately, it’s the best way to repair a busted barrier function situation because you’re not just adding hydration – it’s helping you seal it in. This way, you won’t lose your newfound moisture soon after you apply it. Another way to winter-proof your skin is by using our indulgent, creamy-textured Serra Lipid Recovery Mask. Again, it contains Ceramide-P, but also has extra water-binding ingredients to help you beat winter dryness in the most pampering way possible. Use it for just 15 minutes up to three times a week or slather it on and go to bed with it when you’re feeling extra dry. Either way, it’s the more indulgent ways to nourish your skin. This way, you can enjoy all the best bits about winter, without having to worry about the cold air drying out your skin. So pour that big glass of red and let the chilly season fun begin!
