Prevent and treat the signs of ageing with Lamelle’s professional peels

When last did you treat your skin to a good peel? Many are under the impression that peels are the kind of treatment you’d only invest in once severe pigmentation or deep lines have set in. However, Lamelle has a peel for every skin type, concern and age. While they’ll all essentially exfoliate to reveal fresher, healthy-looking skin, the type of acid used has a slightly different “speciality”. To explain, let’s first get you up to speed on two of the most popular acids and how they can help you create your most glowing complexion yet. Choose your weapons  When it comes to alpha hydroxy acids (AHA), the two most commonly used in skincare are glycolic acid and lactic acid. Both of them are completely natural but the former is derived from sugarcane and the latter from milk. From a molecular point of view, glycolic acid is a lot smaller than lactic acid so it can penetrate deep into your skin for a more intensive treatment. It also has the added benefit of stimulating your skin to create more collagen and elastin making it a good choice for anyone concerned with fine lines and wrinkling. As far as lactic acid goes, it’s also a great way to get your glow on. However, as its molecules aren’t as tiny as glycolic acid’s, they won’t penetrate as deeply. This means you’ll still get to reap the rewards of exfoliation but, as the peel is slightly more superficial, it’s a lot less irritating. Also, as lactic acid is a lot more hydrating than glycolic acid, it’s a good choice for anyone with a dry or sensitive skin type. Get your glow on  Now that you know more about AHA types and how they work, it’s easy to see why we use lactic acid in our very popular Lacti-Firm peel. It involves just five minutes of “tingling” before being neutralised and wiped away by an experienced Lamelle therapist or doctor, depending on the strength of the peel you choose. It’s a great way to get rid of the dry, dead skin cells that can dull and clog your complexion and the milder of the two doesn’t come with any downtime. This way, you could easily schedule it on your lunch break and then pop straight back to the office, with nobody being any the wiser that you’d just had a peel. You could also reapply your make-up straight afterwards and will immediately notice that your skin feels much smoother to the touch and looks more hydrated and plumper. On the subject of moisture, just remember that you should keep your skin hydrated after a peel to avoid any dryness or tightness in the days that follow. Even more importantly, don’t set foot outside without sunscreen. Any peel, even a mild one, will make your skin more sensitive to the sun. We suggest Lamelle Helase 50+, one of the world’s most innovative sunscreens.  Treat the signs of ageing If you’re wanting a deeper peel that can address all the signs of ageing, you’ll want to know all about our Alpha Peel. It makes use of glycolic acid and is available in different strengths that can be adjusted to suit your skin’s condition. As it penetrates more deeply, it’ll tingle a bit more than a Lacti-Firm peel, but this only lasts five minutes and, if anything, is slightly uncomfortable, not painful. Immediately afterwards, your skin might be a little flushed and sensitive, but this settles fast. By the time you’ve waved goodbye to your therapist, your skin will be more radiant than red and feel fabulously smooth. Only a few days later, depending on the strength of the peel, you might notice your skin feels a little tight, looks a bit drier and possibly flakes. But don’t worry, this is fleeting and gives way to a more radiant, more youthful-looking complexion. Again, hydrating and wearing sunscreen is essential, but our very knowledgeable therapists will ensure you know everything you need to out proper aftercare. The bottom line  Whether you want to prevent or treat the signs of ageing, Lamelle has a peel to help you do it. Simply pop in to any clinic offering our treatments* and you’ll find a highly skilled therapist who can recommend the type and strength that can serve up the very best results for your skin. Lamelle Dermaheal: Harness incredible age-defying power of growth factors

If you’re savvy about skincare, you’re probably using superstar active ingredients like retinol and alpha hydroxy acids. But what about growth factors? Being a relatively “new kid” on the block, not everybody knows what they are, let alone their amazing benefits. Worse yet, a lot of people still confuse them with stem cells. So, let’s clear up the confusion and get you up to speed with one of the most innovative ways to create a cutting-edge skincare routine. You’ve got mail! Growth factors are essential peptides – long strings of amino acids – found in abundance in your body. Their job is to float around between your cells and relay vital messages like “grow”, “repair”, “rejuvenate”. They do this by attaching to receptors on the surface of your cells. An easier way to look at it is to think of growth factors as being keys and the cell receptors as being little letterboxes with locks on them. When your growth factors meet your cells, they unlock each letterbox and – just like that – their message is delivered. While we’re young, our skin’s “postal system” is going strong. Everybody gets their mail. Cells run at their optimum. As we get older, however, our body’s produce fewer growth factors. Also, your cell’s letterbox locks start to get a little rusty. As a result, fewer important messages get delivered and your skin starts to show it. After all, less cell communication means less cell growth and that means thinner, laxer-looking skin. Growth factors to the rescue In the past, experiencing a dip in growth factors and the resultant visible ageing used to be a lot like watching your hair turn grey – a seemingly inevitable part of getting older. Now, however, thanks to incredible Nobel Prize-winning scientific research, we’ve realised we can replicate growth factors, apply them topically and reap the benefits. We know this because our bestselling Dermaheal range is full of them and they’re serving up dramatic results. As each product in the Dermaheal range contains growth factors, they can all help optimise the communication system between your cells, essentially instructing it to behave like much younger skin. The result is a boom in collagen and elastin creation to help you enjoy firmer, plumper, more youthful-looking skin. Then there’s the healing aspect. One of the growth factors in our Dermaheal range – the very one that inspired its name – is called TGF-Beta3. It’s an incredibly powerful protein that promotes scarless healing. What’s even more incredible is that your skin hasn’t seen it since childhood. It’s only now, thanks to the miracles of modern science, that we can invite your skin to behave as it did in its youth. Where do our growth factors come from? Thanks to decades of research, our bioengineers have been able to create exact replicas of your body’s own growth factors. Does this mean they contain human tissue? Definitely not! Our growth factors are made in a lab from specially selected amino acids that are then modified to be identical to those in your body. They’ve been scientifically proven to be 100% safe and, because they’re bio-identical, your body immediately recognises them so they can get to work immediately. We invite you to reap the rewards Want to experience the incredible rejuvenating power of growth factors for yourself? Like we said, our Dermaheal line is full of them. However, our most popular Dermaheal product is Lamelle Ultra Renewal Cream that contains 50% more growth factors than the other products in this range. It also includes a non-irritating form of wrinkle-busting retinol, hydrating hyaluronic acid fragments and a patented cytokine complex. (The latter is a spectacular inflammation fighter and that’s important because, if left unchecked chronic low-level inflammation leads to inflammageing – skin that ages prematurely. Chronic inflammation also creates the perfect playground for acne to thrive and hyperpigmentation to run wild.) In short, as you’re reading this, your cells’ function is slowly declining. But you don’t have to accept it. Once you harness the power of Dermaheal’s growth factors, a more youthful, radiant complexion will be yours to enjoy!

The superior way to treat hyperpigmentation? It’s from the inside-out!

If you’re struggling with hyperpigmentation, you’ll know that treating it can feel a lot like doing a country line dance – one step forward and two steps back. After all, you can be as diligent as you like about treating it but spend just one day outdoors without sunscreen and unravel all your progress in minutes. This is why a high SPF protection sunscreen such as Lamelle Helase 50+ is always your best weapon in the war against hyperpigmentation. But what are you doing to beat it? As it turns out, in this case, a multipronged approach is your best form of attack. Invest in the best  Many of the lotions and potions you’ll find promising to help treat pigmentation simply don’t contain the right ingredients to do it, nor are they using them in the right concentration. This is why, switching to a hyperpigmentation-focused medical-grade skincare brand like Lamelle Luminesce is a must.  Luminesce Brighter Day, the day cream, contains a recently updated mix of pigmentation-inhibiting superstars that include a triple peptide complex, a resorcinol derivative and DKK 1 gene agonist. The latter can help normalize your skin’s production of melanin, the pigment that gives it its colour. As far as the peptides are concerned, these do a great job of inhibiting tyrosinase – the enzyme that helps create excess melanin as well as transfer it from the depths of your skin up to the surface where it creates the uneven, dark parts we know as hyperpigmentation.  Our night hyperpigmentation-beating night cream, Luminesce Evening Glow, contains similar actives to the day but includes an anti-inflammatory turmeric extract as well as Arbutin, Niacinimide and a form of retinoic acid with proven hyperpigmentation-minimising benefits. Get your glow back  Another way to bolster your quest for a more radiant, evenly-toned skin is to take an inside-out approach by using Lamelle Ovelle 3D. A twice-a-day, easy to swallow gel capsule, our bestselling supplement is clinically proven to reduce the look of pigmentation by 37-percent in as little as 28 days!  What’s in the mix? Tried and trusted vitamin D3 and Pycnogenol, a mega-antioxidant botanical extracted from pine bark. Together, they help boost your skin’s natural resistance to the damaging effects of the sun. Better yet, Ovelle 3D will also help preserve your skin’s collagen stash while improving hydration so firmer, plumper-looking skin can be yours to enjoy!  At the end of the day, we get it – treating pigmentation can be tricky. But it’s not impossible – especially if you’ve got the right products scientifically proven to help you get your glow back! Get that glow  Waging a war against pigmentation can feel like a losing game. But if you’ve got highly advanced skin brightening products in your artillery, a more evenly-toned, radiant-looking complexion can be yours for the taking. www.lamelle.co.za

Why winter is a great time to peel with Lamelle

They say summer bodies are made in winter and the same can be said about great-looking skin. After all, the chilly months are the ideal ones to invest in a course of peels with Lamelle. Peel and reveal   We all know unprotected sun exposure is bad news for our skin. After all, dermatologists will be quick to tell you that more than 80% of premature ageing is caused by ultraviolet (UV) radiation. However, when you’ve had a peel or any other kind of treatment that removes the uppermost layers of your skin it will always become more sensitive to the sun. Not forever – but certainly while your skin is healing. Alas, being more likely to burn puts you on the fast track to lines and pigmentation. So, ironically, you can undo months’ worth of improvements made via peeling with just a few minutes of unprotected time in the sun. Clearly, the winter months are ideal as a ‘peel season’. While you won’t be hiding away like a hibernating bear, it’s only natural that you’ll spend more time indoors. You also don’t have to worry about having to turn down invitations to sunny events like pool parties or tennis matches during those critical post-peel days when your skin is healing.  Lastly, there’s another reason why winter is prime time for peeling and that’s the dryness factor. The cold, dry winter air will always attempt to rehydrate itself by leeching the moisture from your skin. A series of peels is a great way to help you get your glow on while ridding your skin of excess dead skin cells – a by-product of winter dryness. Do post-care like a pro  Not everyone’s post-peel journey will be alike and that means the type of products you’ll require to heal will vary. Happily, a highly-skilled Lamelle therapist can prescribe the best post-care regime. As an example, if your main concern was to soften fine lines, shift dull skin and improve mild pigmentation, you’d benefit from a series of our Alpha Peels. You might be a little red and sensitive after each treatment, but you wouldn’t experience any downtime. You could gently cleanse your skin using Lamelle Serra Cleansing Gel (our extra gentle soap-free cleanser) then hydrate and soothe using our Barrier Repair Cream. It speeds up recovery time thanks to medical-grade lanolin that mimics your skin’s natural lipids and creates a moist wound-healing environment. You can then protect your skin from the sun using our most innovative sunscreen to date, Lamelle Helase 50+.  Want to address deeper wrinkles or more severe sun damage lines? In this case, you’d have to completely change the structure of your dermis and our retinol-based Retistore Plus Peel can deliver great results in exchange for a little downtime. While your skin might flake for a couple of days, you can apply our ‘bandage in a bottle’, Restorative Balm. It’s ideal to help your skin recover from ‘injuries’ that affect your full dermis as it won’t sting when it’s applied. It’s also semi-occlusive so it can trap moisture within your skin but still allows it to breathe. During the peak ‘healing days’ when you’re using Restorative Balm you won’t want to go anywhere near the sun. But the day you do step aside, again, we recommend investing in Helase 50+. This way, you’ll get full-spectrum protection and can maintain your results and reveal a fresher, more radiant and evenly-toned skin – just in time for the party season!

Skincare shouldn’t have to sting: Understanding sensitive skin

Struggling with very dry skin? There’s a good chance you’re also the sensitive type. And no, it’s not because The Notebook makes you cry. Both conditions – sensitive skin and dry skin – share an underlying cause and that’s a disrupted barrier function. But first, what is that exactly? And if yours isn’t working properly, how do you go about fixing it? Happily, Lamelle’s researches have been studying dry and sensitive skin for decades so we can answer both questions with expert advice. The great barrier Imagine the surface of your skin as a tiled roof. There are many things that can damage these tiles – from using products that are too exfoliating or too much unprotected sun exposure. Either way, once they’re damaged, they lift up and allow your skin’s natural moisture to escape and irritants to get in. The result is skin that’s not only unquenchably dry, but over sensitive due to all those gaps in its “armour”. While you’d think solving the problem would be as easy as applying a heavy, thick moisturiser, it’s not quite that simple. Those missing tiles mean that any hydration you put in will just as easily slip out due to evaporation. However, if you use the right type of hydrator, you’ll be back in business. To explain, your skin’s outermost cells (or tiles!) exist in a waxy layer of lipids. If you’re to repair a damaged barrier, you’re going to need to apply a product that contains a mix of lipids naturally found in healthy skin. These will essentially “seal” it, helping it retain its moisture and protect it from the irritants that can cause stinging, redness and inflammation. At last! Real relief! Once you know what to look for in a barrier repair cream, it’s easy to find a brilliant one, such as Lamelle Serra Restore Cream. It contains patented Ceramide-P to help create a multi-layered lipid structure that mimics healthy human skin. It’s a fantastic long-term solution for anyone with typically dry or sensitive skin. If, however, you’re experiencing an acute bout of sensitivity, having an allergic reaction or have exceptionally dry skin, you’ll want to know about Lamelle Serra Soothing Cream. It contains a double dose of ceramides as well as patented anti-redness and anti-itch technology. Another star product you’ll want in a dry and sensitive skin home care artillery is Serra Cleansing Gel. The former is a deliciously creamy-feeling soap-free cleanser specially formulated to carefully cleanse in a way that doesn’t strip away your skin’s newfound hydration. But what if it’s seriously sensitive…  Okay. So that’s the low down on sensitive skin. In short, it’s typically a symptom of an impaired barrier function. But what about sensitive skin syndrome (SSS)? In this case, you’re dealing with a medically diagnoseable condition characterised by skin that often experiences sensations like burning, itchiness, tightness and even pain despite no obvious trigger. In fact, a sufferer’s skin might not even show any visible symptoms, such as redness or dryness. Much like migraines, doctor’s still don’t fully understand SSS but research suggests it’s a neurosensory condition caused by having too many overstimulated TRVP1 receptors in the deeper layers of your skin. In light of this new knowledge, Lamelle have created Serra NSB. (The NSB stands for “Neuro-Sensory Barrier”.) Its star ingredients inhibits the expression of TRVP1 in the skin while “putting out the fire” via a potent amino acid anti-inflammatory. It can also help repair any barrier issues, should the sufferer have one, thanks to Ceramide-P. Ultimately, if you have dry skin, sensitive skin or even SSS, Lamelle’s Serra collection includes a solution. Make an appointment to chat with one of our skincare therapists today who’ll be able to suggest the correct products that’ll help you get real relief. www.lamelle.co.za

How to beat winter dryness with Lamelle

A nice glass of red by the fire. Snuggling in bed with a book. There’s lots to love about winter. Alas, as the temperatures drop, so does the humidity level. Then, the dry, winter air tries to even the status quo by drawing moisture from whatever it can, including you! This why your skin feels so much drier in winter. It’s definitely not all in your head. It’s just science. To make things worse, many of us tend to take longer, much hotter showers or baths during the chillier months. Again, this isn’t good news for your skin because these can cause the type of inflammation that disrupts your skin’s barrier function, the upper most layers that essentially help you trap hydration. Happily, Lamelle has everything you need to help you beat winter dryness. Prep and prime To start, let’s make a clever swap regarding your cleanser. If you’re using something that contains a high concentration of foaming agents such as sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) it can be too “strippy” and only serve to dry you out further. Instead, switch to a no or very low SLS formula. Good examples of the latter would be our Serra Cleansing Gel, Nourish Daily Cleanse or Dermaheal Foaming Cleanser. Better yet, they’re all enriched with powerful antioxidants and anti-inflammatory ingredients. Next up, you’ll want to know about our Skin Essence Rejuvenate fluid, to be worn under your moisturiser. It’s packed with probiotic lysates that improve the health of your cells to help your skin hold onto more moisture and have a better response to any other active ingredients you apply. Another way to bump up your hydration levels – even before you’ve applied your daily moisturiser – is via our bestselling Corrective HA+ Serum. It’s made with four types of mega-plumping hyaluronic acid (HA), a molecule that occurs naturally in your skin with the ability to attract up to 1000 times its weight in water. It also contains HAFi fragments that stimulates your skin’s own hyaluronic acid production. Moisturise cleverly So, that’s your pre-game sorted. But what about the main event? While your current moisturiser may or may not be up to the task of helping you beat winter dryness, our Serra Restore Cream is! It contains cutting-edge ingredients that mimic that lipids in your skin’s bilayer, including our one-of-a-kind ceramide, Ceramide-P. Ultimately, it’s the best way to repair a busted barrier function situation because you’re not just adding hydration – it’s helping you seal it in. This way, you won’t lose your newfound moisture soon after you apply it. Another way to winter-proof your skin is by using our indulgent, creamy-textured Serra Lipid Recovery Mask. Again, it contains Ceramide-P, but also has extra water-binding ingredients to help you beat winter dryness in the most pampering way possible. Use it for just 15 minutes up to three times a week or slather it on and go to bed with it when you’re feeling extra dry. Either way, it’s the more indulgent ways to nourish your skin. This way, you can enjoy all the best bits about winter, without having to worry about the cold air drying out your skin. So pour that big glass of red and let the chilly season fun begin!

Your 2020 beauty and grooming festive gift guide

It’s been a challenging year, and for most of us, December could not come soon enough. Swimming, hiking, braai’ng and beach days after a long year of work and stress is just what’s needed to recharge one’s batteries.  If 2020 has taught us anything, it’s that South Africans are resourceful. For many people, the nationwide lockdown and shopping restrictions meant coming to the realisation that we actually need far less than we think we do. And with that in mind, we’re rethinking the way we buy gifts this festive season.  Have you ever bought someone a gift out of desperation after trawling aisle after aisle, unable to find anything suitable? Or maybe you (like so many others!) have a drawer in the house filled with unused gifts? This year, we should all be thinking practically. Instead of the ornament your mom may or may not like, or the powertool you’ve never heard your husband say he needs, why not select practical gifts that you know your loved ones will use? While we may be celebrating a little differently this year, one thing is certain: it’s possible to spoil your friends and family with some well-deserved pampering and grooming products, without breaking the bank.  Here’s our guide to finding the perfect beauty or grooming gift this festive season. The Perfect Hair Grow on the Go: Why your hair will benefit from basil root oil

Hair loss and hair growth are two of the biggest hair care concerns among South African women. Healthy hair growth is imperative to a healthy, full head of hair, but for many women, it’s a continuous battle.  Hair growth is affected by so many different factors: from genetics, to lifestyle and diet, to the effects of wearing your hair in high tension hairstyles like tight braids and ponytails. If your hair isn’t growing as well as you’d like it to, you need to take a look at all the different factors that may be contributing to poor hair growth, determine what the cause is, and then take action to improve the condition.  One of the ways you can improve healthy hair growth is by using hair care products that stimulate hair growth. One of the ingredients you can turn to for this is basil root extract / oil. Most popular in India, basil root and basil leaves have been used throughout the world for centuries. It is available in various forms, and can be purchased as a powder, herbal tea or an oil. Basil root oil has been called the “royal oil”, having positive effects on the body, the mind and the heart. Antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and filled with antioxidants, basil root oil is a real powerhouse ingredient. In addition to being healthy for the mind and body, it also offers major benefits to the skin and hair.   When it comes to skincare, basil root oil’s anti-inflammatory properties makes it a great remedy for minor skin injuries and irritations. It contains vitamin C which assist skin cell renewal, thus aiding the healing process. When it comes to hair care, basil root oil has shown fantastic results in minimising hair loss and promoting healthy hair growth. Massaging basil root oil into your scalp improves blood circulation, which aids hair growth (circulation leads to stimulation of hair follicles). It has also shown to soothe the scalp, ease itchiness and even assist in reducing dandruff.  Local hair care brand The Perfect Hair recognised the various benefits of basil root oil, and incorporated it into their Treatment Hair Growth Oil: Grow on the Go Hairline Repair Serum RSP R129.99 The Perfect Hair The Perfect Hairline Repair 100ml is a nourishing growth serum that promotes hair growth and a healthy scalp. Tips for keeping kids’ skin healthy and happy this summer

For little ones, summer spells loads of fun outdoors, but it also means being exposed to the sun’s harmful rays and other negative factors that warmer weather welcomes. We’ve come up with a few ways you can keep your little humans safe and healthy this summer:  Load up on child-friendly sunscreen Apply a child appropriate sunscreen generously all over his/her body and remember to re-apply every two hours as well as after hopping out of the pool. For babies younger than six months, you can dab a tiny bit onto exposed skin. Look for sunscreens with a UVA symbol on the packaging, like Nunuki Lello’s Protecting SPF30 Sunscreen that specially formulated for young skin and endorsed by CANSA. Get into the right gear Did you know that melanin (the pigment in our skin that gives us our unique colour and helps to protect us from the sun) only starts to develop in our skin from the age of six months? Wide-brim hats that shade the face and the back of their necks, swimsuits and light shirts with long sleeves, and long pants or leggings. Choose light cotton fabrics to avoid overheating and perspiration that could cause heat rashes. Keep the mozzies and miggies at bay The sun isn’t the only bad guy to worry about, as insects also come out to play more when the weather gets a little warmer. Apply a thick layer of insect repellent cream to your little one’s skin in the daytime, and more to exposed areas at bedtime. Maxi’s Mosquito & Bug Repellent from the Nunuki range has a special blend of citronella oil and lemongrass that will help keep mosquitoes and other bugs away, as well as avocado and grape seed oil for soft, moisturised skin.  If your little one does get bitten, here are some remedies to reduce swelling and itching: Place a washcloth with ice blocks inside of it on the bite for 10-15 minutes. Apply used green tea bags from the fridge and dab it over the bite (coldness soothes, and green tea has natural healing effect on insect bites). Slice a lemon and rub on the affected area. Dissolve a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda in water to make a paste and apply to affected areas (the alkaline neutralises the pH levels of the affected area and helps in relieving itchiness. Leave it on for 10-20 minutes and then wash with lukewarm water. Keep your little one’s skin healthy and bite-free by keeping these tips in mind as we head into the summer holidays. Find out more about the Nunuki range of skincare products specially designed for babies and children, which are all dermatologically tested and approved, CANSA endorsed, and Proudly South African, at www.nunuki.co.za.

This party season, we’re expecting to see a major uptake in eye-catching makeup looks.  Here are the party makeup trends we’re waiting to see, and how to master them yourself. Graphic liner Graphic eyeliner may seem intimidating, but it only takes a little bit of practice before you’ve mastered the skill. The great thing about this look, is how versatile it is. From a thin cat eye flicked line, to a runway-worthy double line, to statement eyes à la Amy Winehouse, everything goes. The best thing to do is to play around with different lengths and thickness until you find the look that works best for your eye shape. Once you’ve determined that, it’s time to practice, practice, practice. Pretty By Flormar Ultimate Dip Liner(R94.95) enables an easy application at the roots of the eye lashes. While the perfect mix of special moisturizers and emollients adds a creamy texture to its formula, it also helps the colour look intense, clear and smooth. Despite the creamy texture, there is no need to worry about smudging, as it has a quick-drying formula. For the same great quality and usability, but a matte look, try the Pretty By Flormar Matte Dip Liner (R89.95). Voluminous lashes No matter how blessed we are in the lash department, we always seem to want longer and thicker lashes. And that’s no surprise, really! Long eyelashes draw attention to the eyes and have a soft and feminine effect on the face. The number one makeup item you’ll need this party season, is mascara.  Pretty By Flormar has different mascaras available depending on your needs. We highly recommend the Pretty By Flormar Waterproof Lengthening Mascara (R109.95) for daytime (especially if you are in and out of the pool), as well as night time (it will withstand the heat from braais or dancing). If it’s volume you’re after, the Pretty By Flormar Volumizing Mascara (R94.95) is the one for you. As its fiber brush grabs the eyelashes perfectly, it shapes them from the root to the end. Matte lips Matte lipsticks were always in and out of fashion, until about three or four years ago, when they cemented themselves as a makeup staple. We love matte for party season – it stays put, it offers long-lasting colour and the colour payoff is fantastic. Pretty By Flormar Matte Liquid Lipstick (R99.95) creates a smooth look on the lips with its liquid matte texture and intense colouring formula. The shea butter and olive oil in its formula nourish the lips while its soft texture and creamy formula ensure an easy application and long lasting performance. Bright nails We’re big believers that any nail colour can be worn any time of the year, but there really is something about summer that just screams “bright and bold.” Bright nails look so cute alongside pretty sandals, a colourful cozzie or a printed maxi dress. Pretty By Flormar Nail Enamels (R32.95) are sparkling and glamourous and available in a host of bright shades. Pretty By Flormar products are available at Foschini.

Glass hair is summer’s biggest trend – here’s how to achieve it

The biggest hair trend in the States and Europe this past summer was ‘glass hair,’ and while we’re only on the cusp on summer here in SA, we’re already seeing the trend gain major momentum.  A couple of seasons ago, ‘glass skin’ was all the rage. This almost-impossible-to-achieve-at-home trend involved using makeup and skincare products to make the skin resemble the look of crystal clear glass: ie. poreless, dewy, baby-soft and absolutely blemish-free. While this Korean trend made it big overseas, it didn’t quite hit all the right notes with South Africans, and didn’t take off the way it was expected. In contrast, glass hair is affordable, easy and simple to achieve.  So what exactly is ‘glass hair?’ The name says it all: glass hair is sleek, shiny and reflective. Usually a bob or lob, it is a one-length, sharp cut hairstyle that is sleek and glossed to perfection. In essence, the hair mimics the appearance of glass.  Glass hair is proving to be very popular among celebs. Kim Kardashian and Hailey Bieber are the glass hair trailblazers, but we’ve also seen the likes of Lucy Hale and Jourdan Dunn rock this trend. It all started when celebrity hairstylist Jennifer Yepez shared an image of Hailey Bieber’s glass hair on Instagram, in February this year. You can check the post out over here (https://www.instagram.com/p/Bfa1Wk2hRXX/?utm_source=ig_embed). Since then, it’s become a growing trend. Here’s how you can achieve glass hair at home: First up, a haircut suitable for glass hair is important. As mentioned, a bob or shoulder length hair works best, as longer hair is more difficult and more time-consuming to straighten. Your hair needs to be an even length, and if your ends are split, dry or scraggly, it’s best to get a straight cut trim.  Begin by shampooing and conditioning your hair with a moisturising shampoo and conditioner. To achieve a glossy look your hair needs to be as hydrated as possible, so make sure you are washing your hair with products that add moisture and shine.  Try Renpure’s Tea Tree Lemon Sage Shampoo (R149.95) and Conditioner (R149.95) for moisture, restored health and shine.  Infused with Moroccan Argan Oil and silk proteins, CreightonsArgan Smooth Moisture Rich Shampoo (R99.95) and Conditioner(R99.95) nourishes, protects and replenishes moisture, leaving hair silky soft, shiny and more manageable from root to tip. You can even mix a few drops of oil or shine booster into your conditioner for an added boost. We recommend Marc Anthony Argan Oil of Morocco Exotic Oil Treatment (R169.95).  You can also try the OGX Extra Strength and Damage Remedy Coconut Penetrating Oil (R189.95). This ultra-rich blend of coconut oil, essence of tiare and vanilla bean extract helps to repair and soften your tresses whilst leaving your hair feeling silky soft. Apply a few drops to the palms of the hands and apply to clean towel dried hair before blow drying. If your hair tends to get dry, you can follow with a leave-in conditioner, but be sure not to use anything too rich or heavy as this can leave hair looking greasy instead of shiny. If you prefer, you can use a leave-in blowout cream or smoothing cream to assist in achieving pin-straight perfection.  We recommend Marc Anthony Argan Oil of Morocco 3 Day Smooth Perfect Blow Dry Cream (R169.95). Once your hair is dry, apply a heat protection product to avoid damaging your hair when heat styling. We recommend HASK’s ARGAN OIL 5-in-1 Leave –in Spray (R169.95) which provides thermal protection, repairs, moisturises and controls frizz, whilst adding shine. Now comes the more labour-intensive part – flat ironing! Separate your hair into small sections and flat iron each section from top to bottom. If you iron large sections the heat only reaches the hair at the top and bottom, and not those in between. If you want to minimise your time flat ironing, you can give yourself a straight blowout using a hairdryer first.  Once you are done flat ironing, you’ll need to use some products to lock in your style and add extra shine. An oil-based hair serum is a good option – simply pump a few drops into the palm of your hands, rub together and distribute evenly throughout your hair. Lastly, lock in your style and add shine with a good quality flexible-hold hairspray or shine spray. Instead of spraying it directly onto the hair, spray some on a paddle brush and gently brush it through your hair from roots to tips. We love Marc Anthony Grow Long Anti-Frizz Spray (R169.95).  If you’re looking for a lightweight hydrating mist, OGX’s Nourishing Coconut Oil Hydrating Mist (R164.95). Infused with coconut oil and bamboo extract will help leave your hair soft and healthier. And there you have it – summer’s hottest hairstyle!

Get full spectrum protection AND repair

Is your sunscreen state-of-the-art? Lamelle Helase 50+ doesn’t just protect, it also corrects!  When it comes to preventing premature ageing, a high sun protection factor (SPF) sunscreen will always be your best line of defence. Still, not all sunscreen is created equally. For one, most will offer you broad-spectrum protection, meaning they’ll prevent the ageing and burning effects of UVA and UVB rays respectively. Thing is, these aren’t the only forms of light that age and harm your skin. There are many and this is where Lamelle Helase 50+ – a complete solution to all forms of light-related ageing – comes in. Better yet, it and doesn’t just prevent damage, it can correct it too!  It’s not just a sunscreen – it’s a DNA corrector!  Let’s talk about light. Many types can negatively affect your skin and understanding them the first step in knowing how to protect yourself. UVA and UVB you’ll be familiar with. We can’t see those rays, but we know they’re bad news for our skin. You should also be aware of UVC. Technically, this is the most dangerous type of UV light, but thankfully our atmosphere absorbs most of it. Still, a very small yet damaging amount manages to each us. This, along with tiny carbon particles of pollution, can inhibit our immune system.  Next up, there’s Visible Light. This is the form of light we see as colours. It contributes to photo- ageing too as well as DNA damage – and even mutations – that can lead to cancer via the formation of cell-damaging free-radicals. This is why using a sunscreen containing potent antioxidants is vital if you’re to protect yourself.  Last but not least, we’ve also got Infrared A, B and C to worry about. This type of light is what creates that warm feeling when you’re in the sun. Studies have shown it triggers ageing as well as inflammation. Worse yet, it penetrates much deeper than other types of light to reach your dermis, the layer where wrinkles are formed.  Cutting-edge innovation to the rescue  As UVA, Visible Light and Infrared light can all pass through glass, our skin faces an onslaught of damaging light both indoors and out, but we don’t have to retreat to a bunker or toss just yet. Lamelle Helase 50+ is a ground-breaking DNA-correcting photo-protecting product formulated to protect you from the entire spectrum – UVA, UVB, UVC, Visible Light and Infrared!  Thanks to Pycnogenol®, one of nature’s most potent antioxidants, it’s able to fend off the free- radicals caused by Visible Light while calming inflammation. The latter, if left unchecked, is another major cause of premature ageing. Then there’s our star ingredient, photolyase. A powerful DNA-repairing enzyme that occurs naturally in animals and plants, it physically corrects dangerous DNA breaks and kinks (known as “dimers”) that can lead to the mutations responsible for skin cancer. Helase 50+ also stop the effects of immune suppression caused by early UVB, Infrared and even UVC frequencies. It also inhibits the inflammation and ageing specifically triggered by Infrared.  It’s for these reasons that Helase 50+ is being heralded as potentially the best photoprotection product under the sun. No other conventional “off-the-shelf” sunscreen could ever compete.  It’s time for next-level protection  If you’ve already committed to applying sunscreen every day, you’re doing so with the best intentions but are only going halfway. To benefit from FULL protection and help undo the damage already done, switch to Helase 50+. It’s lightweight, fragrance-free formula has a primer-like texture once absorbed and can be applied over your serum and moisturiser. Naturally, everyone can benefit from it – even those as young as six months – but anyone struggling with hyperpigmentation will find it an essential. Also, those with fair skin prone to burning, sun spots, a history of skin cancer and those who’ve undergone a laser treatment or peel that makes your skin more susceptible to sun damage, will find it a DNA-correcting, anti- ageing essential.  Recommended selling price: R525  To learn more about Lamelle Helase 50+, visit https://lamelle.co.za/helase-50. www.lamelle.co.za

Men’s summer grooming tips

You may find your skin needs an extra bit of TLC after surviving the harsh winter and you might want to change up your facial hair to better survive the heat. Here are our top grooming tips for summer: Ditch the soap If you’re guilty of washing your face with the same soap you use for your body, now is the time to stop! Your skin might be a bit dry after winter, and soap is drying on the skin. Using a facial cleanser not only helps maintain your skin’s moisture levels, but it also rids the skin of bacteria and impurities which may lead to breakouts. We recommend ZERO’s Face Wash (R299.00). New to the market, ZERO manufactures plant-based skincare products that are as kind to your skin as they are to the Earth. Moisturise twice a day A good quality moisturiser should be a staple in your routine all year round. A lightweight formulation that doesn’t skimp on performance is a good choice for summer. Try ZERO’s Day Cream R399.00) for all-day hydration that doesn’t sit heavy on the skin. SPF, SPF, SPF Contrary to popular opinion, SPF is not just for beach days. The sun’s rays are more harmful than they’ve ever been, which means we have to take precautions every day, even if you are just taking a drive or running out to the shops. It’s important to select a broad spectrum sunscreen that protects from both UVA rays (the rays that accelerate ageing) and UVB rays (the rays that cause the skin to burn). For the face, we suggest Piz Buin Allergy Face Cream SPF50+ (R189.95) and for the body we suggest Piz Buin Light Hydrating Spray SPF30(R269.95). A great little product to carry in your pocket is Piz Buin’s Lipstick Aloe SPF30 (R54.95), a lip balm that offers fantastic sun protection. If you’re looking for an instant glow but want to ensure that your skin is protected from skin aging and sunburn, a broad spectrum sunscreen is perfect as it protects you from both harmful UVA and UVB rays, we recommend Australian Gold’s SPF 15 Sunscreen Lotion with Instant Bronzer (R249.95). Wash and go With beach days, braais and hikes being high on the priority list during summer, you’ll probably end up washing your hair daily. With frequent washing, it’s best to select a shampoo and conditioner that are formulated for frequent use. It should cleanse effectively without leaving your hair feeling oily or heavy with product build-up. Renpure’s Tea Tree Lemon Sage Shampoo (R159.95) and Conditioner (R159.95) are a great choice.  Infused with Moroccan Argan Oil and Silk proteins, Creightons Argan Smooth Moisture Rich Shampoo (R99.95) and Conditioner(R99.95) replenishes moisture, leaving hair soft and more manageable from root to tip. Deep treatment If you spend a lot of time in the sun, the pool or in the sea, you may have to treat your hair to a masque or treatment once or twice a month to keep it soft and hydrated.  For added hydration, we recommend Marc Anthony HydraLock Conditioning Treatment (R169.95). For an all-over boost in shine, health, nutrients and protection against damage and breakage, you can use Marc Anthony’s 12 Second Miracle Daily Conditioning Treatment(R169.95). HASK’s Shea Butter & Hibiscus Oil Anti-frizz Deep Conditioner (R65.95) moisturises and strengthens dry, weak hair. Replenish moisture and restore strength back into frizzy, damaged strands with this conditioning treatment. The Shea Butter and Hibiscus Oil helps smooth the hair cuticle and reduce breakage for soft, strong hair. HASK’s invigorating Tea Tree Oil & Rosemary Hair & Scalp Treatment Mask (R179.99) is blended with purifying tea tree oil and rosemary to help hydrate and soothe the scalp and hair. It gently detangles, softens and moisturises strands while leaving the scalp feeling rebalanced and refreshed.  Managing your moustache Whether you’re shaving your beard and leaving your moustache, or growing a moustache from scratch this Movember, it’s important to care for your facial hair (and skin!) with some good quality products. Facial hair can be scratchy and get unmanageable if not moisturised, so we recommend applying a nourishing product like Clubman’s Beard and Tattoo Oil (R199.95) daily. This oil blend not only conditions your facial hair, but it also nourishes the skin underneath. If you’re looking to style an unruly beard or ‘tache, try Clubman’s Beard Balm (R199.95). This waxy formula helps you gain control of your facial hair without leaving it feeling stiff or heavy.  If you prefer a moisturiser texture, we recommend Clubman’s 2-in-1 Beard Conditioner (R199.95). This all-natural salve is as flexible as it is effective, serving double-duty as a facial moisturiser and beard / moustache conditioner. Bright smile Red wines, curries and coffees are great winter indulgences, but they tend to stain the teeth. Regain your pearly whites this summer by investing in a couple of home whitening products. A whitening toothpaste is a good place to start. White Glo Deep Stain Remover Toothpaste Charcoal (R99.95) for sensitive teeth is a deep whitening toothpaste that removes fussy stains and discolouration. It detoxifies your mouth and is effective at fighting unpleasant breath, giving you confidence for a brighter, happier smile. You might want to take it a few steps further with some at-home whitening strips or treatments.  White Glo Charcoal Deep Stain Remover Activated Charcoal Strips  (R199.95) can remove up to 10 years of stain in just seven days with long lasting results. Enamel-safe & peroxide-free, the kit contains seven powerful, charcoal infused non-slip strips that offer a secure and comfortable fit to teeth. The activated charcoal penetrates and draws our stubborn stains caused by coffee smoking, wine and general aging. Grooming needn’t be a drag. These simple steps can make all the difference to health and happy skin, hair and teeth this summer.

Six unexpected causes of dry hair

Has your hair become unexplainably dry and brittle? It’s common for all hair types to experience dryness from time to time, but the root cause isn’t always obvious.  We often blame our dry hair on the elements, and while it’s true that exposure to icy weather, wind or the sun may lead to dryness, there are numerous other (lesser-known!) factors that come into play.  Here are six somewhat unexpected reasons why your hair may be dry: Excessive hair washing While it’s important to maintain good hair hygiene, over-washing your hair could do more damage than good. Shampooing too frequently could strip your hair and scalp of its natural oils, leaving it dry, dull and lacklustre. Try to wash your hair when it is necessary, rather than falling into a habit of washing it every day. Every second or third day should do the trick. If you have curly hair, try to wash it no more than once or twice a week, as curly hair tends to get dry more easily. If you simply can’t wait two or three days in between washes, we recommend using a gentle sulphate-free shampoo that won’t strip your hair of its natural oils, like Renpure’s Tea Tree & Lemon Sage Refreshing Moisture Shampoo (R149.95). Want to push it one more day? Dry shampoo is your new best friend. Try COLAB’S number one, the Original Dry Shampoo (R79.95).   Excessive hair brushing Yes, there is such a thing as brushing your hair too often. Excessive brushing can rough up the surface of the hair, increase static and leave it distressed. Try to brush your hair as little as possible and use a good quality comb or special detangling brush to get rid of knots as quickly and easily as possible. We recommend the Wet Brush Original Detangler (R149.00). Too much heat We’re often told that hot water dries out the skin, but did you know that the same applies to your hair? Exposure to heat may dry out the hair, so it’s best to rinse your hair with lukewarm water. Or better yet – if you can handle it – rinse your hair with cold water to smoothe the surface of each strand, leaving it soft and shiny.  Another thing to keep an eye on is the heat setting on your styling tools. Always try to use your hairdryer, curler and straightener on the lowest heat setting possible. Most importantly, always use a heat protector spray, which will coat the hair and protect it from drying out. We recommend the OGX® Brazilian Keratin Therapy Flat Iron Spray. Towel-drying One of the biggest mistakes we make after washing our hair is to vigorously towel-dry it. This friction can cause major damage to wet strands, and has even been linked to hair loss and breakage. Instead of rubbing, gently pat your hair dry instead. If possible, invest in a microfiber towel as cotton towels are particularly harsh on wet hair. Your products are wrong for your hair type Sometimes we select hair care products with good intentions, but for the wrong reasons. A new ingredient might be the latest craze, but if it’s not suited to your hair needs, it can lead to dryness. When selecting shampoo and conditioner for dry hair, read the label carefully. Look for nourishing ingredients like argan oil, coconut oil and avocado oil. Stick to the same brand and product range rather than mixing and matching. This ensures your shampoo, conditioner and mask work together, and that there aren’t competing ingredients wreaking havoc on your hair.  Try: Marc Anthony’s new Hydra Lock Shampoo (R149.95) and Conditioner (R149.95) contains jojoba oil and quinoa protein to give dry hair a burst of hydration, while locking in moisture.  Hydrate and replenish dry hair with Renpure’s Coconut & Vitamin E Shampoo (R149.95) and Conditioner (R149.95).  Revive and restore your hair with HASK Argan Oil from Morocco Repairing Shampoo (R169.95). Infused with organic argan oil, this shampoo helps to repair breakage and smooth split ends.  Drench dry damaged strands with OGX’s Coconut Miracle Oil Conditioner (R199.95). This ultra-rich repairing blend with coconut oil, essence of tiare and vanilla bean extract helps to repair, soften and revive strands. You haven’t tried a leave-in moisturiser, conditioner or oil If you condition your hair after shampooing, you might skip the third step of applying a leave-in conditioner or hair oil. Whilst not a necessity, applying a leave-in product is a sure way of giving your hair a moisture boost. Hair oils are versatile – they can be applied to damp hair after washing, or to dry hair whenever desired. In addition to adding moisture, they can also be used to smooth flyaways and to set a style.  We recommend: Marc Anthony Nourishing Argan Oil of Morocco Dry Styling Oil (R169.95). This fast-absorbing mist hydrates hair while correcting damage, split ends and dullness.  OGX’s Coconut Miracle Penetrating Oil (R189.95) helps revive your senses and your strands. This rich oil helps to calm frizz and tame flyaways, leaving hair silky soft and shiny.

How to perform your favourite beauty treatments at home

Feeling the pinch? You’re not alone. It’s been a tough year, and the vast effects of the national lockdown meant all South Africans have had to tighten their belts. For some, this has meant giving up their routine salon appointments, be it for that bi-monthly manicure or a monthly spray tan. The good news is that it’s still possible to enjoy the results of your favourite treatment, by doing it at home. While you may not get to experience the indulgence associated with visiting the salon, you’ll still get to look your best, while enjoying the results at a fraction of the regular cost.  Here’s how to perform your favourite beauty and grooming treatments at home. Manicures A home manicure is easier to achieve that you may think, but in order to get your nails looking as great as they do after a visit to the salon, you need to ensure they are healthy and strong. We recommend using home treatment products such as Kiss’s Diamond Strengthener Treatment (R119.95) and Kiss Nail and Cuticle Oil (R119.95) regularly.  Even if you cannot paint your nails neatly to save your life, you can still have perfectly manicured hands by making use of stick-on nails. If you love a gel manicure at the salon, you will adore the Kiss Gel Fantasy Nails (R149.95). Think of them as a ready-to-wear gel manicure. The nails have an amazing gel shine and smooth finish, plus they’re available in an assortment of fashion accents and glitter designs.  If the classic look is more your thing, then the Kiss Everlasting French Nails (R99.95) will be right up your alley. They’re available in short and medium length, and should last for at least seven days.  Teeth whitening Bright, white teeth are said to take years off a person’s face. Professional teeth whitening at a dentistry practice yields amazing results, but it does not come cheap. You can budget several thousands of Rands for just one session, and on top of that, there is the added expense of a home care kit and top-ups.  Teeth whitening kits, toothpastes and other products intended for home use have come a long way. It is now possible to safely, and effectively, whiten the teeth by more than one shade using home care products. And best of all, while the products deliver satisfying results, they are not dangerous when used as intended, meaning you won’t end up hurting your teeth or gums if you follow the instructions correctly.  Originally developed for makeup artists who looked after the on-screen appearance of models and film actors, White Glo has a vast range of home care products available to whiten teeth from the comfort of your home.  We recommend White Glo Deep Stain Remover Toothpaste Charcoal (R99.95) for sensitive teeth, a whitening toothpaste that removes fussy stains and discolouration for a brighter, happier smile. White Glo Charcoal Deep Stain Remover Activated Charcoal Strips (R199.95) can remove up to 10 years of stain in just seven days with long lasting results.  White Glo’s Activated Charcoal Teeth Whitening Powder (R149.00) uses the natural elements of activated charcoal to clean and whiten teeth. The highly absorbent activated charcoal draws out stubborn stains, traps colour particles, fights bad breath and whitens teeth enamel.  Biorepair® Pro White Toothpaste (R74.99) returns the natural white of your smile. Using an innovative PVP whitening technology, it restores the natural whiteness of teeth. Hair treatment Going for a hair treatment at the salon is one of life’s many pleasures, but did you know that the cost of one treatment often exceeds the cost of an entire tub of home treatment, which can be used several times? The key to perfecting a home hair treatment is to be patient and follow the instructions. Many of us don’t wait a full 15 to 20 minutes before rinsing the product, and end up washing it off before it’s had time to do its job. Read the instructions on the jar carefully before deciding to go ahead, as you need to budget enough time. The great thing about home hair treatments, is that there is one available for every hair type and concern. Whether it’s breakage, dehydration, split ends or damage you’re looking to treat, a good quality hair mask will go a long way in restoring the health of your hair.  Some great options to try include: Marc Anthony Hydra Lock Conditioning Treatment (R169.95). This treatment goes deep to penetrate every strand for a splash of hydration. It goes to work in as little as five minutes.  Cantu Shea Butter Grow Strong Strengthening Treatment (R129.95). Specially formulated to restore lost moisture and leave hair softer and more resilient.  The Perfect Hair Mango & Marula Detangling Deep Conditioner Packet (R34.95). A creamy, rich conditioner, enriched with mango butter and marula, coconut, and castor oil to condition and soften the hair with an intense moisture boost. HASK Shea Butter & Hibiscus Oil Anti-frizz Deep Conditioner (R65.95). Replenish moisture and restore strength in damaged strands with this conditioning treatment.  Crème of Nature’s Argan Oil Perfect 7™ (R199.95) is a 7-in-1 miracle leave-in treatment mask infused with Argan Oil and conditioning agents such as Pro-Vitamin B-5 and Silk Amino Acids for beautiful, healthy hair with shine. A glowing tan A golden tan is top of our summer wish list. By now, everyone knows that the only safe tan is a faux tan, and that spending hours in the sun perfecting that sun-kissed look is no longer an option. While a salon tan is convenient, there are some fantastic home tanning products you can use to achieve the same result.  Newly launched in SA, St Moritz produces self-tan products that are easy to use and yield a stunning result. Their Gradual Tanning Lotion(R119.95) gradually builds a natural glowing tan while moisturising the skin. This is a great product for beginners and offers a subtle glow. You could also try Australian Gold’s Gradual Sunless Lotion (R299.95), which offers buildable colour that can be used daily for streak-free perfection. If you’re after more intense colour, you may want to try St Moritz’s Tanning Mousse in Medium or Dark (R129.95). These

Festive season, gifting, and the in-laws!!!

Wow time is flying by and I cannot believe the festive season is here. I am not complaining because I am happy to bid farewell to this year for sure. I always look forward to the festive season because school is over for the year and everyone gets a very well-deserved break. Well everyone except the moms of the household. Festive season is always the busiest time of year for mommies especially because we’re trying to keep everything afloat, juggling the last bit of work left, entertaining the kids, making sure that there’s numerous amounts of snacks and meals and if that isn’t enough, throw in the in laws visiting as well. There is no denying that the holidays can be very tense under normal circumstances, but can be very trying if the year has been difficult and we all know that 2020 has really done a number on us.  While festive season can be dauting on families there are ways around it. Here are my tips for dealing with festive and the in laws: Aim to make holiday times enjoyable and memorable. Plan with your spouse so that there is no conflict. Plan which days are set aside for in laws and remember to make time for each other. Sometimes holidays become so busy that you end up living passed each other and then feel like you need a holiday from your holiday. Be vocal about your plan. That way if anyone wants to make other plans, they may do so early enough without getting upset about last minute changes. Balance the time spent between the in laws and remember the main priority here is spending time with the kids and making memories. Keep an open mind. Ask everyone what the one thing is they would like to do over the holidays and make time to do that. Make your in-laws feel included but also explain to them that you would like to do your own family traditions during the holidays and include them in those. Communication is key. Never accept a holiday invite without discussing it with your spouse first. Compromise with your in laws. If you do Christmas eve dinner at theirs this year then perhaps they should come to yours next year. This will not always work but it is worth a shot! Do not forget to set aside some time to rest and relax! The last thing you want is to suffer from festive season burnout. Lastly, do not let your in-laws get under your skin by telling you how you should be running your household or what you should be feeding the kids. As long as your partner thinks you are the bee’s knees, practice those yoga breaths and walk away.  Festive season is almost upon us and now is the perfect time to hunt for gifts for family and friends. To help you with this quest, I have made a list of festive season gift ideas that you could consider on a budget: House of Cosmetics has amazing mystery boxes, unicorn boxes and great bundle deals for makeup which will not cost you an arm or a leg. Now which lady or girl does not love makeup?! This festive season why not gift someone a gift to start their own small business. Caribbeantan has starter tanning kits for sale which equips them with the tools & training to grow their own business. What an amazing gift idea!!!! Caribbeantan also has great bundle deals at a fraction of the cost. You can also buy products individually and build your own spa day box to gift to anyone. A relaxing spa experience is what everyone craves after a long and tiring day/week. I know I crave it every other day. This is an ideal gift for spa lovers/cravers. When in doubt with what to buy someone, I always opt for a frame and pictures because who does not love the gift of memories. Great skin does not just happen, it is moulded. CATRICE has some great serums which is also budget friendly which can be gifted in a pretty box to a girlfriend, sister or mom. Home décor. If you know a friend who has recently moved into their new home or apartment or a friend who is redecorating their place, then home décor is something you should investigate. This gift is also suitable for newly married couples setting up their first home. Personalized gifts. Even if it is Christmas decorations with their name on it. It is something that can be reused every year and what an awesome memory to have. Gift cards. Although I find it quite impersonal, gift cards are the most practical gifts to gift your loved ones or your friends. Be sure to check the terms and conditions of these gift cards before purchasing them. Some limit the usage to specific stores or specific locations. Others limit the product range that you can utilise the card against. Improve Your Intimate Experience Naturally

Let’s start talking about vaginal dryness. You’re not alone and there’s a lot you can do about it Meet up with a group of women and chances are you’ll leave with some great recommendations. The best hairdresser in town. Where to find the plumpest avocados at a price that won’t break the bank. But what about a solution for vaginal dryness? It’s something we aren’t quick to talk about and yet it affects so many us. In fact, 63% of women over the age of 30 will experience some form of sexual discomfort or problem. Fortunately, thanks to brilliant strides in medical innovation, we’re beginning to understand what causes it as well as how to treat it.  The stress connection  When Taylor Swift said “You need to calm down” she might as well have been dispensing medical advice. Too much stress has a massive impact on every aspect of your health. Still, booking that online yoga class can only do so much. Modern living is a stressful business and not just in the psychological sense.  Every day, we’re exposed to an onslaught of oxidative stressors that range from environmental toxins such as air pollution to the result of making poor food choices. These create damaging free radicals that trigger a chain reaction of havoc that affects all your organs, including your sexual ones and those that control your sex drive.  One of the main ways this oxidative stress wrecks damage is by depleting your body’s nitric oxide supply, a substance that’s vital for the health of your vessels. This messes with your blood circulation and has a negative impact on your sexual health. The result? Vaginal dryness, discomfort, lower sex drive and diminished satisfaction. Bump up that blood flow Clearly, oxidative stress and a lack of blood flow is a real problem. Fortunately, there’s a lot you can do to mitigate it – including using a supplement that specifically targets the issue – Lamelle Research Laboratories Lady Prelox (R500 for 60 capsules).  Lady Prelox is an all-natural estrogen-free supplement clinically proven to boost sexual function and satisfaction in women between 37 and 45 by 88% within one month and by up to 126% in two months! It’s even proven to boost sexual satisfaction in menopausal (45–55) and even post-menopausal (50+) women by 60% and more. A brilliant blend Ever heard of the powerhouse antioxidant Pycnogenol? Derived from French Maritime Pine Bark Extract, it’s a brilliant oxidative stress-buster that can help improve circulation. This makes it the star ingredient of Lady Prelox, along with Rosvita, a rosehip extract that’s a great source of vitamin C essential to healthy psychological function.  Lady Prelox also contains L-Citrulline and L-Arginine, two non-essential amino acids that work together to increase your body’s nitric oxide production. This regulates blood flow to your sexual organs to enhance their function. Expect an improvement in the vaginal dryness department, the easing of discomfort, a higher sex drive and a lot more satisfaction. The latter is because, as nitric oxide increases blood flow to the clitoris, it creates an increase in pressure that’s essential to orgasm. What’s not to love? Level 1 & warmer days….

Wow, level 1. We never thought that we would see the day, but here we are. Now that we are in level 1 and the weather is starting to warm up, things are starting to look up for us. A new season brings new beginnings, lazy beach days & spending more time with family. Taking the kids to the beach always seems like an amazing idea until you actually get there and 1 kid needs to potty, the other insists on venturing too far into the water and the other is screaming blue murder because they are hungry and you end up spending most of the day on your feet instead of under the umbrella with a good book while the kids are occupied.  It does not all have to be bad though if it is carefully planned: Make a list of things that you need so you do not forget anything. I like to use the notes app on my phone, as it is always easily accessible. Choose to have an early start so you can find the best spot for the kids. Sunscreen along with beach hats is an absolute must. Do not overpack. Just a bucket, spade and beach ball will keep them entertained for hours. Remember to carry along a bag for rubbish and lots of wet wipes. Hydrate. It is easy to let these simple things get away from you on beach day. Pack lots of snacks. More importantly sand proof snacks like fruit, pretzels, sandwiches, cookies etc.  Do not forget the umbrella and towels. You do not need chairs. Leave them at home. Baby powder for the end of day to remove sand easily. Full proof method to keeping your car clean. Do not forget a little first aid box with band aids and antiseptic. Accidents can happen at any time. Summer holiday makeup essentials I thought this would be a perfect topic as this is the time that everyone including myself, starts to plan their December vacation even if it is just around your own province. Be a tourist in your own city.  When packing for a vacation, every inch of your suitcase is like prime property. It can be a pain trying to decide what makeup to take with you when traveling so hopefully this will help you narrow down your list. I have made a list of my top products in no particular order. 1. CATRICE Tensational Primer: This is a favourite! The ultimate quick fix for your skin. It moistens, freshens, and boosts the look of dull, tired-looking skin. I love mixing it in with my foundation to give my skin a dewy finish or I just apply it on my face as it acts as a great base too and it fills in any fine lines and wrinkles which is perfect. Also, it has an SPF! 2. CATRICE Matt Bronzer: It is a matte bronzer, so it is perfect for contouring as well as warming up the skin. Sweep across chin, cheeks, and forehead. An absolute travel essential!  There’s also the CATRICE Glow Illusion Loose Powder. It has a little shimmer in it so it’s ideal for those beach days. Skip the blush and highlighter and just sweep this across the cheekbones. 3. CATRICE Sun Glow Highlighter: This is a brush-on highlighter that gives skin the appearance of being lit-from-within. It brightens and highlights the face and décolletage for a glowing look. Light, compact and perfect for travelling! 4. CATRICE Glam & Doll Waterproof Mascara: This waterproof mascara saturates from root to tip and it enhances volume and extends length. These defined lashes are clump-resistant, non- flaking and non-smudging – and can withstand moisture of any kind. Ideal for those pool days! 5. CATRICE HD Active Freeze Setting Spray: With a setting a spray your makeup is going to last all day or night with fading or melting. It is also ideal to keep in your purse as a spritzer to refresh you. 6. CATRICE Precise Slim’matic Eyebrow Pencil: It does not budge so it is perfect for wearing in the sun and when you are swimming in the pool. This is one of my favourite brow products. For extra strength, set it in with a brow gel. 7. CATRICE Neon Earth Eyeshadow Palette: This palette is perfect as it has earth tones like the browns and taupe’s, perfect for any outfit and it is not dramatic. The best part is that it is compact and will not take up space. 8. CATRICE Translucent Powder: This is great because it is compact with a mirror which you can throw in any bag. You can set and touch up your makeup and because it is translucent, you do not have to worry about what colour you are, it is there to take away any shine. 9. CATRICE Kohl Pencil in black and brown: I do not like to use a liquid liner on vacation as it can smudge. To create definition, I prefer to use a kohl pencil and smudge it into the lash line. The CATRICE pencils are super soft and creamy and easy to blend. I will take brown for daytime and black for that extra spice at night. 10. CATRICE Poreless Mousse Foundation It gives an amazing natural finish and still covers any imperfections. Lastly with all these great makeup products, there are a few non makeup essentials you should take as well: Sunblock  Sun hat Lip balm – CATRICE Clean ID Balm Moisturizer Disinfectant wipes or hand sanitizer – this goes without saying especially now. I love to use VirocClean A good book Power bank Summer is really my favourite season of the year. However, with the heat, humidity and extra sun, our beauty regime is really tested. Here are some of my summer beauty hacks: Dry shampoo is a girl’s best friend in summer when hair get oily and sweaty. It also saves you between washes.  Applying a mascara with tinting properties, will help tint your

PCOS: You’re Not Alone – A Plea for Ovarian Health Consciousness

Acne, weight problems, excess hair, irregular periods – what if it’s all connected? This new ovarian health research asks you to take a minute for yourself and reflect … Every day, millions of women of every age and culture look at themselves in the mirror and see something that no one else does. We see that little bit of weight no diet or lifestyle changes seem to be able to fix. The excess oil, unwanted hairs and pimples that just won’t go away. We look straight past the beauty that’s there and see the girl who needs medication to have a normal period. Or the woman who’s umpteenth pregnancy test has come back negative. And we ask: why me? Why can’t I be normal? Funny thing is, that’s almost all of us. We just don’t talk about it. And perhaps it’s time that changed. Turns out, you’re not alone Over the past few years, doctors and researchers have been looking into a poorly understood and underdiagnosed ovarian health condition, known as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). And we’ve made a few startling discoveries along the way. PCOS impacts your ovaries and can cause infertility, and it’s usually only discovered when a woman struggles to conceive. But new research says that PCOS can show up at any age and as some of the most common “everyday” symptoms women experience today: Irregular, missed (or absent) menstrual cycles Weight loss or weight gain (the kind that you feel you can’t control) Acne, pimples and oily skin Excess hair growth And, in later life, difficulty falling pregnant Recognise these? The message is: You’re not alone. Research has shown 1 in every 10 women might have PCOS. What is PCOS really? New studies show that PCOS actually starts with your metabolism. Researchers realised that the bodies of most women with PCOS have trouble processing insulin, the hormone it uses to extract and store the energy from carbohydrates.  And if your body struggles with insulin, it builds up in your blood and triggers your ovaries to overproduce androgen (male hormone). The technical term for that is hyperandrogenism, and you can probably already guess its symptoms: acne, excess hair growth, weight problems, irregular periods and infertility. Suddenly it all makes sense.  You’re not weird or different. It’s more common than you think. And you can get help right now. If you think you might have PCOS Now, of course, not every pimple or stray hair indicates a serious underlying cause. But if you’ve really been battling with one or more of these conditions, the good news is you can get yourself tested and know for sure. Your doctor or gynae will be able to advise. And it doesn’t matter what age you are. In your teens, you might just want some answers about your weight, acne, hair growth and those times you missed your period. Or, if you want to start a family, you might already have some trouble conceiving. Even later in life, if you’ve had some of these symptoms and just want to make sure the insulin part doesn’t become something more serious (yes, PCOS has been linked to diabetes). Just know, PCOS can be managed. In fact, we at Lamelle Pharmaceuticals have developed an exciting new product specifically to complement the treatment of PCOS and promote ovarian health. Have a look: INTRODUCING: ALL-NEW OVARIA Using an inspired blend of ingredients, including a naturally-occurring sugar that’s part of the vitamin B family, Ovaria is a brand-new ovarian-health nutritional supplement whose ingredients are proven to be just as effective as traditional treatments (metformin or glucophage) for PCOS, but without any of the side effects. The naturally-occurring ingredients in Ovaria bind to cell receptors, activating the signalling pathways that regulate thyroid hormones and, most importantly, insulin in the body. This means Ovaria helps normalise blood insulin levels, which normalises androgen and improves the symptoms of PCOS. THE INGREDIENTS IN OVARIA ARE PROVEN TO Increase ovulation rate in 16 weeks Increase menstruation cycles  Reduce hirsutism (excess hair growth) by 29% in 6 months THE BENEFITS OF OVARIA Improves ovulation to enhance fertility in women Normalises the menstrual cycle – in case of period problems Improves insulin resistance – useful for managing weight problems Improves blood glucose level (fasting glucose) Reduces hirsutism – used for hair growth problems Reduces the severity of acne – used for acne problems Improves insulin resistance, reducing type 2 diabetes risk and its complications Reduces blood androgens – used for acne, excess hair and sebum NEW OVARIA FOR A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE Ovaria is a nutritional supplement that comes in powder form. Choose from two flavours – orange or peach. You simply tear open the sachet, mix the content with water and drink, once per day. Ovaria contains 4000mg of Myo-Inositol, the required daily dose clinically proven to be effective in the treatment of PCOS symptoms.  Doctors will have more information on PCOS. Transitioning your Winter makeup look to Spring

Now that Spring is upon us, our wardrobe choices are getting lighter for the warmer weather and our makeup should be too. Now is the time to pack away the darker colours & start playing around with some brighter colours. Switching up your makeup routine ensures that things are kept fresh and on point. I think that this year is going to be all about natural beauty with pops of colour here and there. I don’t know about you, but ever since COVID-19 hit, I find myself gravitating more towards wearing a lighter application of makeup and letting my natural beauty stand out. Here are some of my tips for a smooth transition from winter makeup to spring: Lots of water – warmer days mean that your skin will need more water for hydration. Do not skip the sunblock. This goes without saying. Harmful UV & UBV rays can lead to pigmentation and premature ageing of the skin. Prep & prime – Now that the days are going to be warmer, we need our makeup to last all day. Incorporating a primer into your makeup routine not only fills in any fine lines & wrinkles, but also helps with the staying power of your makeup. My favourite primer to use now is the CATRICE 10 in 1 primer. It does everything and has an SPF in it for that added benefit. Change up your foundation – Warmer, hotter days means more time in the sun and with more time in the sun your skin also starts to warm up. Changing up your foundation by a shade or 2 darker is a must or alternatively you can bronze up your face with a matt bronzer. For a lighter foundation coverage, I love mixing a little moisturizer in with my foundation. Glow up – I love adding lots of highlighter to my makeup routine in Spring. This gives my skin an amazing healthy glow. Highlight your cheekbones, down the bridge of your nose, cupids bow, under the brow bone and inner tear duct. For some added glow, I love to highlight my collar bones and shoulders as well. I use the CATRICE Luminance highlighter palette. Bronze me up – add some warmth to the face for a Sunkissed finish. I add bronzer on my forehead, between my cheekbones and jawline, under the jawline and down the sides of my nose. This also helps to chisel and carve out the face. Swap out the lipsticks & opt for gloss. Lip gloss has a light texture and is perfect for lighter Spring days. Adorn the spring nails colours – this is my favourite thing to change up in Spring. I love the brighter nail colours like yellow, mint, pink, baby blues and lilac. The brighter the nail colour, the better. I for one cannot wait to be laying out in the sun and spending lots of time with the kids by the pool. Decluttering your home: With changing up your makeup routine, I think there is also a need to spring clean and declutter your home and let go of things you do not necessarily need. When I do this, it makes me feel so much lighter. Getting rid of unnecessary baggage and freeing up space is so important for my mental & emotional wellbeing. Having kids, we tend to hoard so many toys, clothes, books, and school supplies. I can’t tell you the amount of time that gets spent trying to find things. By decluttering I know exactly where things are. Everything has a place and life is so much calmer. Here are my tips to a seamless decluttering & organising process: Make a list of the areas you want to declutter and organise. E.g. Pantry, closet, kids toys etc. Invest in a label machine. This way everything can be labelled, and it saves time opening cupboards and containers to see what exactly is inside. Purchase storage containers and boxes. In the long run, it’s a saving and it looks better and neater than having things kept in black bags and boxes. This can be done over time, so that it doesn’t become an expensive process.  When decluttering and organising make different piles. A pile to giveaway, a pile to throw away, a storage pile and a keep pile. For my pantry, I have slowly started the conversion to plastic containers and have everything labelled. A container for flour, sugar, pasta, cereal etc. It has made my life so much easier as I have no half-opened bags lying everywhere clipped with pegs.  I have bought baskets for sweets, chips, and biscuits so that everything is packed neatly. For the closet, I like to have it repacked for every season. With Spring/Summer approaching, I like to pack winter coats etc that take up space in big plastic containers and throw in some moth & fragrance balls to keep it fresh then pack it away in the garage and have it labelled so if ever I need to look for something I know exactly where it is. In my closet with the items that do remain, I colour coordinate and pack similar items together. For the kids, I only keep the items that the kids play with now and pack everything else away in storage baskets. I get rid of broken toys and donate what they have outgrown. Whether you tackle this as part of a downsizing effort or simply to simplify your life, decluttering and organising an entire home is a big job. The best way to tackle it is in stages, room by room or cupboard by cupboard. Goodluck!

Clean beauty

What is clean beauty? The clean beauty movement embraces natural ingredients. The term clean beauty means beauty products that are cruelty-free, vegan and do not include harmful ingredients. There is no compromise in terms of quality and efficiency, just high-performance products along with peace of mind. Clean beauty products are products that do not contain ingredients such as, parabens, silicone, palm oil, sulphates and fragrances, yet still deliver exceptional results. Why choose clean beauty? As a parent, we are always lecturing our kids about recycling, being more conscious about the earth and being aware of what they put in their bodies, but we never stop and think about what we are doing. Most parents do not even have the time or do not even know where to start (me, I am most parents). Therefore, when CATRICE launched their Clean ID range I was super stoked! The clean beauty movement has become a growing movement which we could not ignore. It is a movement, which resonates with a lot of customers and it is here to stay. By supporting brands that already adopt the clean beauty movement, we are already doing our bit. If we all do our little bits, then all our little bits add up and we make a huge impact. The Clean ID range is environmentally friendly, vegan and the products are not tested on animals. The products are all free of parabens, silicones, micro plastics, mineral oil, pure palm oil, exotic and animal ingredients. No to parabens – what are parabens? Parabens are chemicals found in products which are used as preservatives. They are harmful as they can interfere with the body’s hormones, most notably the reproductive hormones which pose possible risks such as, cancer, fertility problems and chronic diseases. No to silicone – what are silicones? Silicones can be harmful as they may contain harmful additives, which are not biodegradable. No to micro plastics – what are micro plastics? Micro plastics are tiny particles of plastic found in cosmetics. Once these cosmetics are washed off, it reaches wastewater which is not efficient in removing these plastics as the plastics then reach the oceans and are harmful to aquatic life. No to mineral oil – what is mineral oil? Mineral oils used in cosmetics are derived from petroleum. Mineral oils can clog pores and make it difficult for moisture to enter and exit the skin which can lead to breakouts. No to pure palm oil – what is palm oil? Palm oil is a vegetable oil used in cosmetics for moisturising and texturizing properties. The palm oil industry often faces criticism for the deforestation it continues to cause and its consequences: clearing of wild animals’ natural habitat (including rainforests), and depletion of valuable carbon sinks including peatlands and trees.  No to animal ingredients – what are animal ingredients? Some companies are not educated or sensitive to the suffering of animals in the production of certain products that do not involve the actual slaughter of animals. Using animal testing in cosmetics development might involve testing all the ingredients of the finished commodity or the finished product on the animals. CATRICE Clean ID has such a wide selection of products namely: Clean ID hydro BB cream – 99% natural ingredients Clean ID eyeshadow palette – 80% natural ingredients Clean ID mineral bronzer with SPF – 85 natural ingredients Clean ID mineral swirl highlighter – 96% natural ingredients Clean ID lip oil – 84% natural ingredients Clean ID eyeliner – 75% natural ingredients Clean ID eye pencil – 100% natural ingredients Clean ID volume+ lengthening mascara – 75% natural ingredients Clean beauty which is CATRICE clean ID is simple, trusted and conscious. We love this movement and look forward to revealing more from this range next year.

Let’s change the conversation around female sexuality this Women’s Month

Did you know that 63% of women over 30 experience some form of sexual discomfort or problem? That’s more than half, or every second woman you see every day. We just don’t realise, because us women internalise so well: What’s wrong with me? All my friends seem fine, so why is it just me? The truth is it’s not just you. It’s you and almost every woman around you. And science is only now beginning to understand how our stressful modern-day lives impact our sexual drive and function.  Fortunately, knowledge is power. This Women’s Month, we can change the conversation about our sexuality. My periods are irregular – is this menopause? Probably only if you’re approaching 50. Menopause is a reality between 45 and 55, but irregular periods can happen long before that – almost at any age. Irregular periods (oligomenorrhea) can happen when your body experiences hormonal imbalances and changes in hormone levels (like when taking contraceptives or falling pregnant). But new research suggests that stress, pollution and environmental damagers trigger a cascade of damage inside the body that has a devastating effect on your sex organs, suppressing your body’s production of the vital sex hormone estrogen. Scientists believe that this is the reason behind more and more women showing symptoms of hormonal changes earlier in life. For the first time in my life, I’m experiencing vaginal dryness and sex is uncomfortable, is this normal? For too many women, yes, it’s becoming very common. Our modern-day lives increasingly expose us to internal and external damagers that create Reactive Oxygen Species and free radicals, which ravage the cells in our bodies (known as oxidative stress). And, worryingly, oxidative stress seems to have a huge impact on the organs that control our sexual drive a function. Oxidative stress depletes the vital vein- and sexual-health compound, nitric oxide, in our bodies, which causes symptoms such as dryness, discomfort, as well as lower sex drive and satisfaction. All of which can put a great deal of stress on you and your relationship. But it needn’t become the norm. We’re finding exciting new ways to counteract the damage. Why are my moods so unpredictable? Mood swings are very common when there are hormonal changes happening inside your body. That’s why we have commonly held beliefs of premenstrual mood swings, and that mood swings indicate approaching menopause. But, again, unpredictable moods don’t necessarily mean menopause. Oxidative stress depleting nitric oxide in your body can cause the type of hormonal changes that lead to mood swings at any age – or at least long before actual menopause. I really battle to “get in the mood” – is there something wrong with me? No, there’s very seldom something “wrong” personally. A decrease in libido/desire is usually a normal psychological (mental) response to the physiological (physical) damage in your organs.  The oxidative stress that’s depleting nitric oxide and causing changes in hormones and sexual drive and function – the stuff that’s causing dryness and discomfort during sex – will often trigger a natural response in your brain to try and avoid the uncomfortable situation. Your brain is very clever, and, if it realises that you feel embarrassed or uncomfortable during intimacy, it will often trick you into avoiding sex in the future. Fortunately, we have exciting new ways to treat both the physical and psychological effects around sexuality. I don’t feel confident and my sex life is dwindling. How can I improve intimacy with my partner? Firstly, this is natural in every relationship. A couple’s physical intimacy doesn’t stay constant during a relationship, it often requires work to maintain beyond the “honeymoon phase”. According to PhD Julie Jones for PsychCentral, building on emotional intimacy is a powerful key: Learn to be curious again. We often become wrapped up in defending our own opinions in relationships, losing our need to understand the other person’s point of view. Actively trying to understand (without giving up your own opinion) creates empathy, which builds intimacy. Jones also says that “surprise generosity” boosts intimacy: Make yourself available in a new or different way. You could offer to do the chore your partner always complains about or offer to go with them to the place/activity you usually skip because it’s not your “thing”. Lastly, be selfish for all the right reasons: Invest in yourself. Remember that your partner was first attracted to you because they saw something different and unique in you. That’s powerful. Nurture it. Take care of yourself. Invest in your wellness, your personal development and your mindfulness. When you’re feeling your best, you bring an important vitality to your relationship.  BOOST SEXUAL HEALTH BY 88% Lamelle Research Laboratories understands how oxidative stress impacts a woman’s sexual drive, desire, function and satisfaction. The no makeup makeup look for moms on the go

I think that most of us have experienced the wrath of COVID -19 and the havoc it has caused in our everyday lives and like most people, we have all grown quite tired of hearing about it. Ever since COVID-19 hit I think it has worn us down and caused us such anxiety that we now have COVID -19 burnout. When the Pandemic first arose, I like most, was consumed by it. We watched the news and followed the stats closely and had so many sleepless nights. Although COVID -19 is still very much a relevant topic, I think we are all yearning for a little bit of normalcy and wants things to look forward to and have conversations about things other than this cumbersome virus. We still want to stay in the loop with things that pertain to us like kids, school, updates, breakthroughs etc but we want to consume it at our own pace; not every time we open a social media app. We have all been feeling a bit down and I don’t know about you, but I haven’t found the need to dress up or even put on makeup. Now that most of us are back at the office or bracing ourselves to go back to work, I wanted to share my tips on how to achieve the “no makeup”, makeup look. Wearing a mask is also mandatory, so this look means we will look office-ready without the hassle, seeing as we are all still running our households and seeing to the kids schooling under the “new normal” circumstances. The “no makeup”, makeup look These days the makeup trend is all about the “no makeup, makeup look.” We are seeing a lot less makeup than before. Makeup is not ‘plonked’ on but rather more natural looking, letting your natural features come through. Here are our tips to achieve the ‘no makeup, makeup look’ Minimal foundation. Try mixing your foundation in with moisturizer so coverage is less. Don’t skip the sunblock. Wrinkles are the last thing we want to add to our already long list of worries. Conceal properly. Colour correct and conceal any discoloration or redness. Use the CATRICE colour correcting palette. Peach concealer underneath your foundation cancels outside blueness or darkness. Green concealer underneath your foundation cancels out redness. For shadow you want to choose a cream shimmer colour for eyes. You could even use a shimmer colour on the inside of your eyes to open it up. If you are not a fan of shimmer, then try using a single shade of eyeshadow all over the lid like a warm brown or orange. Use the CATRICE nude palette. Groom your brows and for a more natural look you could use brow gel. Use the CATRICE clear brow gel. Apply a coat of mascara and for a more subtle look you could also use brown mascara instead of black. Use the CATRICE glam & doll mascara. Bronzer and blush to warm up the cheeks and create definition. Use the CATRICE matt bronzing powder and luminice highlighter palette. Sweep of highlighter and a dash of gloss on the lips. Use the CATRICE volumizing lip gloss. As moms on the go, we all need a little pick me up and confidence boost even if it is a little makeup to help us feel normal again. Feeling good about ourselves is an instant energy boost and mood enhancer. Transitioning your summer closet to winter on a budget Life is expensive – period! Finding smart ways to recycle my summer clothes to winter is something I love doing because it gives me an opportunity to wear my summer clothes in different ways and make it feel like a whole new outfit. Here are my tips: Maxi dresses – throw on a long sleeve top underneath, a blazer or leather jacket, a pair of boots and we have a whole new outfit. Layering – I love layering my white shirts and throwing on a chunky knit or taking a dress and throwing over a knit. Invest in thick winter stockings. Recycle those summer skirts by pairing them up with winter stockings and boots. Add richer, deeper colours – most people will think neon colours should be tucked away for Summer but pairing it up with earth tones will make it perfect for Winter. For example, a neon bodysuit paired with a camel blazer makes it very wearable for Winter.  Accessories are life changing and it is a less expensive way to change up an outfit. Layering up necklaces and adding a different earring can really breathe new life into an old outfit. When I do have extra cash I can spend, I like to invest in statement pieces that will last me for years to come. I invest in leather jackets, a few coloured winter scarfs, a few chunky knits, boots, sneakers or loafers, scarfs and hats or beanies. My favourite past time is buying vintage items. You can pick up amazing steals and some name brand items too for a fraction of the cost. I love that the pieces you find are unique and no one else will have the same. Sitting in my closet while the kids are asleep, and hubby is playing Fifa (yes this happens in my household too) and thinking up outfits is something I find so relaxing. Plus, it saves me time in the morning having to decide what to wear. CATRICE Cosmetics is available at Dis-Chem pharmacies and online at Takealot, Zando, Superbalist & House of Cosmetics.
