Winter sun safety: Why sunscreen is essential during the colder months

As South Africans we are accustomed to the harsh summer sun, and are used to applying SPF before heading down to the beach, or going for a run. But did you know that the sun’s UV rays are equally dangerous during the colder months? While you’re unlikely to experience a sunburn from UVB rays during winter, UVA rays (the ones that accelerate ageing) have the ability to wreak havoc on our skin, particularly on overcast days. “Even when it’s cold or overcast, UV rays that cause skin ageing and skin cancer are reaching your skin,” says Deborah S. Sarnoff, MD, president of The Skin Cancer Foundation. “In the right winter weather conditions, you can sustain sun damage just as easily as during the summer.” UVA rays have the ability to penetrate through clouds and fog, meaning your skin is vulnerable even on days when the sun isn’t shining. Did you know that UVA rays can also penetrate glass? That means it’s possible for the sun’s rays to harm your skin on a bright winters’ day, while you’re indoors!  UVA rays can accelerate ageing, meaning more fine lines and wrinkles, but they also make the skin vulnerable to skin cancer. Winter makeup tips for glowing skin and striking eyes

South African summers can bring about harsh weather, and going from extreme heat to icy temperatures, dry air and rain in winter, can wreak havoc on our skin. How to select makeup based on your skin type

There’s more to choosing makeup than finding your perfect colour match and selecting products that offer great value. When purchasing makeup, it’s important to take the formula into account, not only to ensure it offers comfortable wear and easy application, but also to ensure it is suitable for your skin type.  There are so many different formulas available when it comes to items like foundation, blush, highlighter and bronzer, be it liquid, powder, cream or mousse. While most makeup products are suitable for anyone to use, there’s no doubt that certain formulations work better on certain skin types. Oily and combination skin types  Oily and combination skins produce too much sebum, which can lead to clogged and enlarged pores, blackheads and breakouts, as well as a shiny complexion.  People with very oily skin sometimes have difficulty finding a foundation that doesn’t slide off the skin after a couple of hours. Sunless tanning with Caribbeantan

Sunless tanning, also known as self-tanning, spray tanning or fake tanning refers to the effect of a suntan without the sun. I find that when it comes to tanning it is a little bit like trying to find a foundation shade to match your skin tone, a very daunting task. There is never enough information on what shade to choose and how to go about it. This article will explain what spray tanning is about, how it works as well as bust some myths about it. About Caribbeantan: Caribbeantan was born out of pure inspiration back in 2003, when we saw a need for a better, safer way to achieve a beautiful, bronzed holiday look, without damaging your skin by exposing it to harmful UV rays or harsh chemicals.  The Caribbeantan Professional Salon System was the first professional self-tanning salon application system in South Africa, which subsequently sparked the Salon Spray Tan phenomenon. In 2007, Caribbeantan became available on the shelves of beauty stores, which contributed to it quickly becoming consumers’ number one choice for self-tanning. Choosing the appropriate shade is extremely important since the skin type is extremely relevant in the tanning process. Never apply a darker shade on a fair skin.  The Caribbeantan range comes in 3 shades namely: A – for fair skin tones B – for medium skin tones C – for medium to dark skin tones Tip: If you are a first-time tanner, then go for a shade lighter. This way you can see how it looks and feels then decide if you wish to use a darker shade next time. How long does it last? A Caribbeantan tan can last from 4 to 8 days depending on the maintenance.  Reasons why a tan can fade: Not keeping the skin moisturised. The skin exfoliates naturally every 28 days. Keeping the skin super moisturised will stop the skin from flaking and help the tan last longer. Baths: taking long baths can fade the tan much quicker – rather take short showers. Swimming:  swimming for long periods will fade the tan quicker. Showering before the development time had passed.  Wait at least 8 hours before showering after applying your tan.  Some skin needs more time and can take up to 12 hours. Tanning myths: Self-tanning myth #1 Self tanner will make you turn orange. Absolutely NOT. You must choose the correct shade for your skin tone. Caribbeantan will always give you a beautiful bronzed natural looking tan. Self-tanning myth #2 Self-tanner will stain your clothes & your sheets. Caribbeantan is water soluble and will wash off easily from clothes & sheets. Self-tanning myth #3 Self-tanner will stain your palms. Self-tanning myth #4 There is no right way to apply self-tan. Wrong! Always follow the directions on the packaging upon application to get the best-looking tan. Allow 6-8 hours for your tan to develop and refrain from activities, such as, swimming while your tan is developing. This will ensure that you get the most gorgeous natural looking tan. For me self-tanning is about looking & feeling confident. It evens out my skin tones and makes me look healthy. It also hides stretch marks and cellulite. When I look good, I feel good, and it just gives me that confidence boost and enhances my mood.

How to transition your hair care routine from summer to autumn

The onset of autumn marks the transition of many things in our beauty routines. Fresh, fruity fragrances are swapped out for spicier counterparts, lightweight skincare products are replaced with richer masks and creams and even our makeup looks are reinvented (hello dark lipstick and warm eyeshadow palettes!). So why shouldn’t the same principles apply to our hair care products? When the seasons change, it’s not uncommon for our hair to become dull or dry, and for our scalps to get a little bit irritated by the temperature drop. Summer usually brings its own hair care challenges: an oily scalp and dehydration or damage from UV exposure, sea water or chlorine. When temperatures drop, these concerns may change to static, a dry or irritable scalp, frizz and brittle hair. Establishing a routine that specifically caters to these issues while offering some repair to the damage done in summer, can help you achieve good hair days all throughout autumn. Follow these tips for a smooth seasonal transition. Increase moisture When the temperature drops, the humidity in the air decreases, which may lead to dry hair. Throw some indoor heating into the mix (heaters are known to zap moisture from the hair!) and you may be left with dull, brittle and dry hair. Now is the time to switch over to moisturising hair care products.
