Should I let my Teenager sleep all day? Pros vs Cons

As a local manufacturer of period panties, we thought we’d answer some common questions about our business just to explain who we are and what we do. Q: How long has Blushproof® been in operation?  Blushproof® started as an idea in September 2020, with our first sales being in August 2021. I have a tween daughter at junior school and so was thinking about her, and her friends’ introduction to puberty and my own experiences. I had also seen some of the alternative menstrual products that were being offered overseas. This coincided with an increased awareness of environmental issues after learning that each person uses approximately 14,000 pads and tampons during their menstrual years, which all end up in landfills and water systems. Q: Who founded Blushproof®? I, Thandi Hartmann, founded the company. I’m married with two children, living in Johannesburg. I obtained a B.Comm in the 1990s and later did a MBA to support me working in a number of corporates in Johannesburg and London. Shortly after having children, I took the decision to step back from my career to focus on raising my family. In 2020 (that COVID time where we all had lots of time on our hands!) I came across period panties and was amazed that such a wonderful alternative existed. I knew this was something I wanted to bring to the girls and women of South Africa.  Q: How has Blushproof® expanded over the years? In 2020 I explored the topic of the menstrual product options for young girls and women and thought about what matters to them, as well as the issues that are relevant in South Africa at this time. I started thinking that period panties could be an effective solution – easy to use whilst having a lower impact on the environment. I also wanted to see if I could help (in some small way) to create jobs in our country. Finally, I believed that period panties could play a role in fighting “period poverty” by providing cost effective solutions to girls and women with limited means and limited access to other sanitary products. So the challenge started… Whilst I have a strong IT systems background and passion for the product, I had no experience in setting up a clothing manufacturing business. My team and I have learnt as we go and have had to “course correct” a few times along the way. It’s been an exciting journey so far, made possible by the support of friends and family and enabled by the tech world we live in. This has meant that it has been possible to set up Blushproof® as an E-commerce business that sells and delivers directly to consumers nationwide. Q: What is Blushproof’s® approach to creating the best product in the community? I decided that I wanted my business to try its hand at manufacturing locally, so that I could control the product quality and achieve the aim of providing local employment. It’s been exciting for me to design the product range, import the right materials in the right quantities and then produce the Blushproof® period panties that I believe in. Plus, making locally has ensured that our sizing fits our Rainbow Nation, rather than trying to squash uncomfortably into Chinese imports. The fact that we offer exchanges and give outstanding customer service certainly sets us apart from the large retail chains. Q: What new products can customers expect from Blushproof®? This is a tough one. If it were up to me, I’d be creating new products every month but this isn’t the best way to run a business. Our customers have their absolute favourites so I’ve learnt to focus on making what the customers actually want. We’ll certainly look at designing and making gym shorts, pyjama shorts and expand our swim range over time but right now, we’re focusing on what we do best. Q: How does ordering from Blushproof® work? Since our business is primarily online, customers simply go onto our website, choose the products they want, add them to cart and pay. They can choose between collecting from our Joburg workshop or having us ship their blushproofs nationwide. We might look at getting into shops over time but again, we’re focused on our core business for now.  Q: Will/does Blushproof® offer any special programs for its customers? When customers sign up on our website for our newsletters, they always get the inside scoop on what’s new and promotional offers from discounts to free goodies to prizes. We love the support we get from our followers and like to reward them when we can. Q: Do you plan on opening any Blushproof® in person stores, or introducing your product in other stores and if so who?  I’d love to get to a point where customers can come into our workshop to choose their items and pay right away. Although this already happens to a limited degree (we have to have the right style, size, absorption and colour in stock for this to happen) I’d love to have everything available all of the time. Once we get to this point, I’ll look at possibly getting into a few stores (we actually already sell our products through TigerLilly). It all comes down to whether or not it makes good business sense. Of course we have lots of small business owners already selling our products, like salons and spas, as well as swim schools. I’m being approached more and more by people wanting to expand their product offering and am honoured that they choose to include Blushproof® products. Oh, and we have an Affiliate programme whereby our customers become an affiliate and when someone uses their referral link to make a purchase, that person gets a discount and the affiliate gets a commission. Teenagers tend to live in the now. Unprotected Sex and STIs Teenagers may engage in sexual activity without proper protection, increasing the risk of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and unintended pregnancies. Durex’s Global Sex Survey (2019) revealed that a quarter of Generation Z began researching and engaging in sexual behaviours before the age of 16. These statistics raise serious concerns about teenage pregnancies and sexually transmitted illnesses. Comprehensive sex education, access to contraceptives, and open discussions about safe sex practices are essential in reducing these risks. Obesity and Poor Nutrition Obesity is becoming more common among teens and can not only cause health concerns such as diabetes, high cholesterol, joint problems, breathing problems and heart disease but also impact self-esteem. The World Health Organization highlighted over 340 million children and adolescents were overweight or obese in 2016. World Obesity Atlas 2023 warned that more than half of the world’s population could be overweight or obese by 2035, with childhood obesity predicted to more than double. Obesity is characterised mainly by excess body fat, and body fat is estimated using a guideline known as the body mass index (BMI). The BMI calculates a teen’s weight and height. The findings are then compared to benchmarks for children of the same gender and age. Focus on making small changes together to help your teen maintain a healthy weight. Encourage your teen to get at least 60 minutes of exercise every day. Keep healthy snacks in the house, like fresh fruits and veggies, and replace sugary drinks with water. And don’t forget the importance of sleep – earlier bedtimes can help prevent obesity. Smoking and Vaping Tobacco use remains a significant health risk for teens, and the emergence of vaping has added a new dimension to this problem. A survey conducted by the University of Cape Town Lung Institute on 6 922 high school learners from Grades 8 to 12 revealed more teens are vaping as a way to control stress levels. Both smoking and vaping can lead to addiction and have serious health consequences. Talk to your teen about the dangers of tobacco and nicotine use and provide resources to help them quit if necessary.  Internet and Social Media Addiction Teens spend an average of seven hours and 22 minutes each day on screens, as reported by Common Sense Media. This doesn’t include computer time for academics. Excessive screen time can disrupt sleep and affect emotional health. While screens may always be a part of your teen’s everyday life, they don’t have to be the central part. Establish healthy screen time limits and encourage your teen to do offline activities that promote face-to-face interactions. Turn off the TV during meals and discourage text messaging or web browsing while eating. Consider implementing screen-free days to ensure your teen maintains a healthy balance between screen time and other activities. Organise family activities that do not involve electronics, such as board games or family hikes, and establish a clear rule that electronic devices should be off-limits during these shared moments. Bullying  Bullying, including cyberbullying, can have a devastating emotional and psychological impact on teens. Parents should be aware of the signs of bullying and create a safe space for their teens to discuss any issues they may face. Encouraging kindness and empathy can also help combat bullying behaviour. Self-harm and Suicidal Thoughts Teenagers may experience overwhelming emotions and resort to self-harm or have thoughts of suicide as a way to cope. Reckless Driving and Accidents In South Africa, one can get a learner driver’s license at 16 years of age and a proper driver’s license at the age of 18. Gone are the days when breakouts magically disappear the moment you leave your teens, never to be seen again. Adult acne is becoming more and more common, and it’s not unusual for people to continue experiencing breakouts well into their 30s, 40s and even 50s. The reason? There are many. From hormones, to lifestyle, to hygiene and stress, each person’s acne journey is unique. Whether you experience the odd breakout or you’re battling full-on acne, pimples have a way of knocking one’s self-esteem and putting a damper on day-to-day life. The best way to overcome breakouts begins with education. The more you know, the better you’ll be equipped to deal with them – no matter how stubborn they may seem. Karen Bester, Medical Trainer at Lamelle Research Laboratories, answers the most common questions about acne and breakouts: I’m no longer a teenager but I’m suddenly experiencing breakouts again. Why is this happening to me as an adult?  We all assume that the only time you should get breakouts is when you are in your teens. Even though this is the one time that your body is going through a massive amount of hormonal change, this is not the only time that it happens. Breakouts indicate a change in hormones and we have a few phases in our life when this happens. What is the difference between breakouts and acne? The odd pimple can be caused by changing environments, stress, an area of clogged pores or maybe after a peel or resurfacing treatments that creates change in your skin. There would be no irregularity about a breakout. Acne is a chronic condition that is driven by hormones and probably has a link to your genetics. It will worsen with stress and hormonal change. It can also vary from very light to full inflammatory cystic acne. Can my diet lead to breakouts? That is an interesting question. There is no unequivocal evidence that proves that diet is linked to acne or the worsening of breakouts. If there were a strong link then there would be populations that don’t have acne where these foods might be excluded from their diets. No population is excluded from acne and breakouts. There are individual anecdotal links to diet though and these cannot be denied. One of the drivers of male hormone in PCOS is insulin resistance. So in the PCOS patient sugary diets and a diet high in carbohydrates might worsen their acne anecdotally. Can wearing makeup cause breakouts? Wearing makeup does not cause breakouts. Rather, not removing makeup and sleeping with thick layers of makeup on your skin might cause breakouts. Once again this will vary from person to person. Makeup does not cause acne though. Hormone fluctuations and genetic pre-disposition do. What type of skincare ingredients and products should I be using to clear blemishes and prevent new ones from forming? For the odd pimple we love salicylic acid, azelaic acid and niacinamide. These could be included in a cleanser or spot treatment or moisturiser. Add a Retinoic acid ester to that if you have acne, generally used at night in a moisturising cream or additional serum used with moisturisers. What should (and shouldn’t) I do when I notice a new pimple appearing? Keep calm. Don’t fiddle. Is it normal to develop acne after menopause? Perimenopause and menopause is one of the times when females have enormous fluctuations in hormones as their ovaries stop their hormone production. So it is very normal for women to have oilier skin, get more breakouts and even start losing their hair – all driven by testosterone. How can I maintain an anti-aging routine while managing breakouts? Retinoic acid increases skin turnover and shedding in the top layers of your skin. This keeps that layer younger and healthy. Retinoic acid also removes elastosis and when you use it for more than 10 months it will show significant collagen production. Additionally, Niacinamide is also anti-inflammatory and anti-ageing. Age restrictions, are they purely suggestions when it comes to social media?

It may feel at times that age restrictions are simply suggestions, however when it comes to the safety of our children online, it’s probably best to pay attention. Age restrictions are in place for a reason, every parent or guardian knows their child best, pushing the limits within reason with your consent. Every parent has the right to decide for their own child.  You know your child better than anyone. However, when it comes to social media, you can’t control the world.  We’ve all experienced it. Social media can send you to strange and wonderful places. The videos can entertain and memorise you. We’ve all fallen victim to the social media scroll.  When it comes to our children, the average age restriction for social media is 13. Legally it is 16 for WhatsApp, a channel frequently used by younger children to communicate. This also happens to be a platform where cyberbullying is gaining momentum.  No, we can’t rely on the actual platforms to enforce this at log-in. Although it can be argued that it is their responsibility. This age limit comes from US legislation from 1998 which banned the collection of children’s personal data without parental consent. For many parents, schools and cyber safety experts, this minimum age has become a benchmark.  The truth is social media can be toxic. Young children have not yet developed their emotional intelligence to filter out certain content, to read between the lines and to interpret information with a critical eye. Allowing children to access these platforms exposes them to an array of people, places, and situations. All of which you cannot control.  The risks are real. The University of Syndey has cited the below to be major risks. Risks include being exposed to online bullying and harassment.   They can be exposed to misinformation and inappropriate content.  Master manipulators can set into gear their sexual grooming. Youngsters are the most vulnerable to privacy breaches. Children enjoy the freedom that social sites give them, making them feel older than they are, this leads to excessive use, leading to addictive tendencies.  Academic studies claim there are links between social media and poor mental health and low self-esteem. Despite there being no correlation between excessive social media use and poor self-esteem, we cannot ascertain a direct causation. It’s important to note that should a young person already experience low self-esteem and depression they will tend to use social media significantly more than others. Emotional intelligence  Emotional intelligence is not the ability to understand the difference between happy or sad, like or angry! It’s the ability to manage both your own emotions and understand the emotions of people around you. READING … It has been said that in Grade 0 – 3 a child learns to read and from Grade 4 up, they read to learn. Learning to read is different from learning to communicate. Children are born with the inherent ability to learn to communicate, but they are not born with the inherent ability to learn to read. As such, teaching reading needs to be systematic and intentional.  Sadly, for many of our children, they miss out on the foundations of learning to read which impacts negatively on their ability to learn throughout life. Although accurate statistics are hard to come by, the evidence is conclusive that South Africa’s rate of illiteracy in our schools it frighteningly high. In 2021, the Progress of International Literacy (PIRLS) study reported that 80% of students in South Africa, in Grade 4 were illiterate! This is beyond frightening and we need to systematically and intentionally intervene to turn the tide of growing illiteracy.  In a world dominated by screens and soundbites, the art of reading seems to be fading into the background. Yet, it’s importance remains as crucial as ever. Learning to read properly isn’t just about deciphering words on a page, it’s about unlocking a world of possibilities, expanding horizon and empowering individuals to navigate the complexities of life with confidence and insight. Helping Teens Avoid Sextortion Scams

Takeaways: Meta has worked with the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) to expand Take It Down to more countries and languages, allowing millions more teens to take control of their intimate imagery. Meta has also partnered with Thorn to update our Stop Sextortion hub, offering new tips and resources for teens, parents and teachers on how to prevent and handle sextortion. Meta is supporting safety organizations and creators around the world to help raise awareness of sextortion scams and what teens and parents can do to take back control. Having a personal intimate image shared with others can be devastating, especially for young people. It can feel even worse when someone threatens to share it if you don’t give them more photos, sexual contact or money — a crime known as sextortion. That’s why, this Safer Internet Day, we’re announcing new efforts to help combat this kind of criminal activity. These include giving more teens control over their intimate images, helping teens  — and their parents and teachers  — feel better equipped against those trying to exploit them, and supporting creators and safety organizations around the world as part of a global campaign to raise awareness of sextortion. Expanding Take It Down to More Languages and Countries Take It Down is a program from NCMEC, supported by Meta, which is designed to help teens take back control of their intimate images and help prevent people — whether it’s scammers, ex-partners, or anyone else — from spreading them online. First launched last year in English and Spanish, Meta and NCMEC are now expanding the platform to many more countries and languages, making it accessible to millions more teens around the world. There are several ways people can use Take It Down to find and remove intimate imagery, or help prevent people sharing them in the first place: Young people under 18 who are worried their content has been, or may be, posted online Parents or trusted adults on behalf of a young person Adults who are concerned about images taken of them when they were under 18 Take It Down was designed to respect young people’s privacy and data security. To start the process, people can go to TakeItDown.NCMEC.org and follow the instructions to assign a unique hash — a digital fingerprint in the form of a numerical code — to their image or video, privately and securely from their own device. Teens only need to submit the hash, rather than the intimate image or video itself, which never leaves their device. Once the hash has been submitted to NCMEC, companies like Meta can find copies of the image, take them down and help prevent anyone who’s threatening them from posting them in the future. “Making Take it Down available in 25 languages is a pivotal step towards safeguarding children from the horrors of online exploitation all over the world,” said John Shehan, a Senior Vice President with the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children. “We aspire to ensure that every child, regardless of language or location, has the opportunity to reclaim their dignity and privacy by having their illicit content removed from participating platforms.”   Take It Down builds off of the success of platforms like StopNCII, which helps prevent those seeking to exploit people from sharing adults’ intimate images online. New Resources for Teens, Parents and Teachers to Help Prevent Sextortion   These moments can be upsetting and isolating, especially for young people, who may feel too scared to ask for help. That’s why we’ve worked with Thorn, a nonprofit that builds technology to defend children from sexual abuse, to develop updated guidance for teens on how to take back control if someone is sextorting them. It also includes advice for parents and teachers on how to support their teens or students if they’re affected by these scams. The new resources can be found in our updated Sextortion hub within Meta’s Safety Center. Kelbi Schnabel, Senior Manager at Thorn, said: “Our work with Meta to provide targeted, robust sextortion resources has helped Thorn significantly enhance our efforts in combating sextortion. Our joint initiative is already empowering parents and teens to understand the risks and take action, which is a testament to the power of collaborative action in tackling complex challenges like sextortion. The result of our collaboration underscores the importance of accessible, comprehensive resources in the digital era.” To help make sure teens and parents everywhere know about these scammers and what they can do to avoid them, Meta is launching a global campaign, supporting safety organizations and working with incredible creators around the world to help raise awareness. Our Work to Help Protect Teens From Sextortion On Our Apps Today’s updates build on the work we already do to help young people know there are steps they can take if someone has shared, or is threatening to share, their intimate images. We show Safety Notices to people on Instagram when they’re messaging someone who has shown potentially scammy or suspicious behavior. These Safety Notices urge people to be cautious, encourage them to report any account that threatens to share their private images, and remind them that they can say no to anything that makes them feel uncomfortable. We also direct teens to Take It Down at relevant moments when using Facebook and Instagram, such as if they report someone for sharing their private images, for nudity, or for sexual exploitation.   And we work to help protect teens from unwanted contact in the first place. We default teens under 16 (and under 18 in certain countries) into private Instagram accounts when they sign up, which hides their follower and following lists, and we restrict adults over 19 from messaging minors who don’t follow them. Last month, we announced stricter default message settings, meaning teens under 16 (and under 18 in certain countries) won’t receive messages from anyone they don’t follow or aren’t already connected to, providing more protection against potential scammers.

Finding the perfect balance between screens

Taking a break from a screen is easy to do when you have a fun alternative to look forward to. The Codey Crawler adventures take children through how to be safe when they play games or watch YouTube, but it’s not just all about being online. Social Kids has joined forces with the experts at Kids Collab, an organisation that promotes an active lifestyle and safe space for kids to play, together we’ve created some alternatives to relieve a child’s eyes and get that blood pumping and imagination soaring.   Physical activities to play, brought to you by Kids Collab: 1)      The Stocking Adventure Time to practice kicking and striking. Before you start, gather a small ball or pair of socks rolled up and a stocking. Place the socks at the one end of the stocking and tie it around your child’s waist. Now encourage them to try kick the ‘ball’ using one foot. After a few attempts, change it up so that the stocking is tied to a stable branch. Using a bat or rolled up newspaper, encourage them to hit the stocking as they create their own swing ball. 2)      Magic Carpet Ride Who thought collecting teddies around a room could be such fun. All you need is a box, some teddies/toy, some rope and a stable object. Tie the rope to a stable object and place the box at the end of the rope. Scatter the teddies around the area near the rope. Encourage your child to sit in the box and pull themselves forward, while they collect the teddies on the way. Tip: place the box on top of a blanket for a smoother ride. 3)      Fun with Colours Ready to practice some balancing while having fun with colours. All you need is scissors, tape, a pencil and a few different coloured pieces of paper. (Tip: include a pillow to make it more fun). Make a simple colour wheel on a piece of paper using the different colour paper and place the matching colours on their shoes/feet. Encourage your child to balance on one leg while they pick up the colour off their foot and match it to the colour on the wall. To challenge their balance a bit more, have them stand on a pillow and perform the same activity. 4)      A simple balloon A blown up balloon can give hours of fun, the floor is larvae, keep the balloon up high, balloon soccer or try keep the balloon up without using your hands. The games are boundless. 5)      Save the ducks Learning to transfer objects in different ways can be loads of fun. Collect small/lightweight objects to mimic ducks (plastic cups, socks or balls), Sit on a chair, collect the ‘ducks’ between your feet and transfer them into the basket in front of them. Next, try encouraging your child to lie on their back and transfer the ‘ducks’ with their feet overhead into the basket behind them. Don’t forget to add it the imaginative play element 6)      Memory Game Ready to have some fun jumping in a bag. Get out your socks, some cups and a material bag (e.g. woollies tote bag). Place all the socks around the garden, making sure they have matching pairs and place the cups over it to cover them. Encourage your child to hop around the garden in their bag, trying to locate the matching pairs. They can only pick up one cup at a time and once they have found the matching pair, encourage them to place it in their bag until all the socks have been collected. RECOGNISING COMMON SIGNS YOUR KIDS ARE BEING BULLIED

Physical bullying involves actions like hitting, kicking, or pushing. Verbal bullying encompasses name-calling, taunting, or using hurtful words. Psychological bullying involves intimidation, manipulation, and control. Signs Your Child May be the Victim of Bullying Recognising the signs that a child is being bullied is crucial for taking immediate action and providing the support they need. Some signs that may indicate your child is being bullied include: Emotional Changes: A child being bullied may exhibit increased irritability, anxiety, or depression. They may become withdrawn, show a loss of interest in activities they once enjoyed, or display signs of sadness without an apparent cause. Changes in Eating and Sleeping Habits: A child who is bullied may suddenly lose their appetite, skip meals, or overeat to cope with their feelings of stress and anxiety. Bullying-related stress can also disrupt a child’s sleep patterns, leading to insomnia, nightmares, or a sudden increase in night waking. Physical Complaints: A bullied child may experience unexplained physical complaints, such as headaches, stomach aches, or other somatic symptoms. They may also have unexplained injuries, such as bruises, cuts, or scrapes. Withdrawal from Social Activities: A child who is being bullied may withdraw from social activities, including school clubs, sports, and gatherings with friends. They may become isolated and reluctant to engage with peers. Decline in Academic Performance: Bullying can affect a child’s ability to concentrate and perform well in school. A noticeable decline in academic performance may be an indicator of bullying-related stress. Loss of Personal Items: Bullying sometimes involves theft or damage to personal belongings. If a child frequently loses items or comes home with damaged possessions, it may be a sign of bullying. Changes in Social Media Behaviour: Watch for changes in a child’s social media behaviour, including harassment or exclusion. Avoiding Certain Routes or Areas: Children who are bullied may try to avoid specific routes or areas where they have encountered their tormentors, such as streets, bus stops, or corners of the school. Frequent Requests for Money or Belongings: Bullies may extort money or personal belongings from their victims. If a child frequently asks for money or items without a clear explanation, it could be a sign of bullying. Loss of Confidence and Self-Esteem: A child’s self-esteem and self-confidence may suffer due to bullying. They might start doubting themselves or expressing feelings of worthlessness. What To Do if Your Child is Being Bullied  The first step in addressing bullying is establishing open communication with your child. Create a safe and non-judgmental space for them to share their experiences and feelings. Let them know that you are there to listen and support them. Keep a detailed record of each bullying episode, noting dates, locations, individuals involved, and any evidence you can gather, such as screenshots or photos. This documentation may be helpful when discussing the issue with school authorities. If bullying occurs, contact school staff, including teachers, counsellors, or the principal. Share the documented information and request a meeting to discuss the situation. Collaborate with the school to develop strategies to stop bullying and create a safe environment for your child. Empower your child with coping strategies to handle bullying situations. You should encourage them to avoid confrontations, use assertive communication, and seek help from trusted adults when needed. Teach them the importance of staying composed and assertive when responding to bullies. If your child is experiencing severe emotional distress or displays signs of anxiety or depression due to bullying, consider involving a therapist, counsellor, or online support group like SADAG or Childline South Africa. These professionals can provide the necessary support and strategies to help your child cope with the emotional impact of bullying. In extreme cases where bullying involves threats or poses a real danger to your child’s safety, don’t hesitate to involve law enforcement. Lastly, stay involved in your child’s life and support them while closely monitoring the situation to ensure the bullying stops and doesn’t resurface.

Preventing the unthinkable

Sunshine, watermelon and flip flops… summer holidays are around the corner! If you’re a parent you’re probably planning activities to keep your little ones occupied, or maybe pulling together your holiday travel plans. Whilst you are ticking off your packing list and racing to get your shopping done, be sure to take a moment and consider how you will keep your children safe around water this summer holiday. Drowning happens quickly and silently and can devastate a family in a matter of minutes. More than 700 children under the age of 15 years old die from drowning every year in South Africa, but even non-fatal incidents in which a child is rescued can leave a family dealing with long term social and health consequences. Recent evidence from Australia suggests that an infant’s risk of drowning triples as they reach one year of age. In South Africa, we know that children under 5 years old have the highest drowning rates compared to other age groups, but rates remain high in older children as well. Young children tend to drown in water in and around the home, while older children drown in larger, open bodies of water. Whilst these numbers are sobering, it is important to remember that most drowning incidents are preventable.  Here are some tips for keeping your children safe around water this summer. 1- Layers of barriers Many drowning incidents in very young children are unwitnessed, meaning that no-one is around at the time that the child enters the water. Young children often fall into water unintentionally while playing nearby or fetching toys that they may have been playing with earlier. One of the most effective ways to prevent drowning in young children is to ensure that there are barriers preventing them gaining access to water around the home. This means ensuring that pools are fenced off or have a safety cover that meets local safety standards, even better if you have both. Having a cover or fence alone is not enough – it must be used correctly! This means replacing the cover completely when a pool is not in use or ensuring that a gate is closed and not easily opened by children. It’s important to remember that hot tubs, paddling pools, blow-up pools, and portable above ground pools all present a drowning risk and should be protected appropriately or emptied when not in use. Pools aren’t the only area of risk around your home either – small ponds, reservoirs or storage tanks should also be protected by a barrier preventing access.  2 – Designated supervision So many drowning stories start with “I thought he/she was watching”. Counter intuitively, drowning incidents can happen easily in a crowd because they are silent and not signaled by splashing as many people think. Consider the large family braai where everyone is chatting around the pool and kids are splashing and laughing. Everyone is there but no-one is watching. Designating an adult to supervise children enjoying any water is essential. A supervisor should be an adult, not an older sibling, who is sober, not distracted by their phone or a book and within arm’s reach should something go wrong. As a parent it’s so easy to fall into the trap of thinking that nothing bad ever happens, so I’ll just step away to take that phone call or take the pot of the stove. Supervision is about someone being able to respond appropriately in the tiny percentage of times that things go wrong, not the majority of times where it’s just another day of summer fun. Forget about the “dad bod” or “mummy tummy” – get your cozi on and enjoy the water with your kids. 3- Learn CPR and know your emergency number Knowing what to do in an emergency can make the difference between a tragedy and a close call. CPR is simple to learn and, if performed early, can save a life and reduce the chances of long-term neurological damage in a drowning incident. Calling 112 from any cell phone in South Africa will reach a call centre who will route you to the closest emergency service. 4 – Swim between the flags When heading to the beach, make sure to swim only where and when lifeguards are on duty. Lifeguards do not replace adult supervision of children, but swimming between the red and yellow beach flags ensures that you are in the safest location on any given beach.  5- Be mindful of unfamiliar homes and holiday locations Even the most diligent, water smart parents can get caught out while travelling. It’s important to consider water safety when visiting family who might have older children or no children, or while staying in hotels and guesthouses that are unfamiliar and exciting to explore. When you’ve arrived at your holiday location, take a slow walk around the property, and consider it from the perspective of your children – where is the water? Where are the access points? How can you prevent access? If you’re visiting an unfamiliar beach, dam or river, speak to locals or lifeguards to find out where the safe swimming spots are. 6- Watch out for lilos and pool floats That flamingo pool float is super fun but be very cautious using it on any large open bodies of water or rivers. Floaties get caught by the wind and currents very easily and can quickly take a child (or adult!) out of their depth. 7- Teach your children survival swimming skills Summer holiday preparation happens year-round and enrolling your children in a survival swimming or learn-to-swim programme can help them learn the essential skills of safe entry and exit and what to do when they fall in. ARTHRITIS IN YOUNG ADULTS

Lifesaving SA and DHL launch an online water safety learning platform

Every year, hundreds of families across South Africa lose loved ones in preventable drowning accidents. For youth 17 and under, drowning represents the second highest cause of accidental death after road accidents. The highest percentage of deaths are in children aged 1-9 years. This problem is not unique to South Africa, but follows trends seen globally, where 90% of the world’s accidental drowning deaths occur in middle to lower income countries. (World Health Organization) Following on from the success of Lifesaving SA’s WaterSmart School programme, in partnership with the Department of Education and DHL, Lifesaving SA has launched a free online e-learning WaterSmart hub, making water safety content accessible to all South Africans.  While water safety training does take place in South Africa, its reach is limited. This is because programmes currently depend on in-person instruction conducted by volunteers, such as those working with Lifesaving South Africa (LSA).  In 2016, Lifesaving SA launched WaterSmart, a paper-based educational programme written for the Department of Education Life Skills Orientation curriculum for grades 4-6. Since its inception, each year 50 lifeguard facilitators present this programme in hundreds of underprivileged schools, thanks to the sponsorship from corporates such as DHL, who through its partnership with Lifesaving South Africa, connect people and help save lives. In 2021 the KZN Department of Education partnered with Lifesaving SA where 6700 teachers and supervisors were trained to present the programme in their classrooms. In 2022 the programme was presented to 607 770 learners in more than 6000 schools, reaching over a million learners to date. The DHL Lifesaving WaterSmart Online Hub seeks to address the problem of drowning in South Africa by teaching learners about the various dangers water poses, empowering them to better manage risks and maintain a constant awareness and vigilance whenever water is around. The hub includes animated video content and interactive quizzes and spot the risks, making it fun and easy for children to learn about water safety and prevent drowning. The characters and scenes are presented in a simple, easy to understand format, allowing a greater audience to be reached. The content draws upon materials already developed by LSA for in-person training, including the character of “Resci,” who guides learners through the content. Teachers and parents are guided with learning plans, downloadable resources such as workbooks, readers, and posters to assist with delivering the programme to their learners and after each module is completed the learner is presented with a certificate. Jed Michaletos, Managing Director of DHL Express South Africa, expressed his delight, adding, “As a business, we talk about delivering excellence in a digital world, so when we had the opportunity to work with the Lifesaving SA team to digitize their learning materials, we jumped at it. This will increase the reach of the programme dramatically through ease of access – and really help deliver the message of water safety, to all. This project is a true demonstration of our organisational purpose, of Connecting People and Improving Lives.” With summer having finally arrived after a long and wet winter, DHL and Lifesaving SA want to ensure that children are taught how to be safe around water to prevent unnecessary drownings because one life lost to drowning is one life too many. The child concerned inevitably struggles with the comprehension section of my assessments and while the diagnosis is simple, the “medication” is very difficult to administer…think squirming cat here and the thankless task of attempting to force a pill down the hapless feline’s throat! Teens & tweens are watching porn & we need to talk about it

Parents of today’s adolescents grew up in a world where pornography was something you had to get your hands on, which was difficult to do while you were underage.  There wasn’t much of it around to start with, and then there was a host of regulations and restrictions that limited the range and possibility for adolescents to be exposed to adults-only content. While you might have managed to find the odd magazine under your big brother’s mattress, there wasn’t much chance of becoming a regular consumer of all sorts of porn. Contrast this with a recent episode of the Sip the Tea podcast, where a teen girl recounts her story of being, in her words ‘addicted to porn’.  She tells Rachelle Best, founder of FYI play it safe, that she engaged with pornographic content from the age of 9 years and went on to compulsively consume it for years.  The girl, now 17, articulates the impact that this has had on her self-esteem and body image.  Instead of a carefree youth, she describes one wracked with guilt and shame. Curiosity about the adult world and, about the secrets that adults keep, is of course, perfectly normal, healthy child behaviour.  It tests the boundaries that parents put in place when it comes to the aspects of human life that we worry that children may find disturbing, frightening or shocking.  As adults, not just parents, we have a universally recognised duty to protect children when it comes to violence, cruelty, war – and sex.  This duty is a legal requirement in the case of human sexual behaviour because in South Africa, as in many countries in the world, it is illegal for any adult to be involved in exposing a child to pornography. The digital era has fundamentally redefined childhood, and when we put a tablet, or a gaming console, a phone or laptop into our child’s hands, something parents do when their children are at younger and younger ages, we give them the keys to a limitless, unregulated world.  The proliferation of violent and sexual content across the digital world is unfathomable.  It’s no exaggeration to say that ’porn is everywhere’.  There’s just so much accessible, pornographic content that it is now impossible to believe, that purposefully or inadvertently, your child won’t be exposed to it.  This reality is demanding new approaches to sex education, new openness in parent-child communications and new strategies for parenting digital natives.  UNICEF, the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund, has asserted that “pornographic content can harm children”. The organisation has expressed its alarm at the “massive quantity” of pornography available and its easy accessibility to children of all ages.  It suggests that: “Exposure to pornography at a young age may lead to poor mental health, sexism and objectification, sexual violence, and other negative outcomes.  Among other risks, when children view pornography that portrays abusive and misogynistic acts, they may come to view such behaviour as normal and acceptable.” Counselling Psychologist, Elliott Kotze who works extensively with adolescents presents another view.  He says, “Currently, peer-reviewed evidence on the effects of exposure to porn in childhood is scarce.  There is also an argument that porn is not addictive which suggests that compulsive porn consumption is not about the media, but about underlying issues.  For instance, sexual shame is often inherent when it comes to compulsive porn consumption.  Another potential cause for compulsive porn consumption, with or without masturbation, is a need for self-soothing or emotional or sensory regulation. This can become problematic when it becomes the person’s only way to self-regulate.” Elliott is clear though that unintentional exposure to pornography in childhood can be traumatic.  He says, “For a child who inadvertently clicks on a link or is shown porn onscreen by a friend in the playground, there is a trauma response risk.  If they are not ready or equipped, and don’t understand what’s going on, what they see is likely to be shocking and disturbing to them, and they would need capacity from their parents or a professional to process this.” For adolescents that develop a compulsive use of pornography, Elliott says, “Typically, it is distress that drives compulsive behaviours, and to treat this there needs to be an understanding of that distress.  Adolescents face many challenges – mental health challenges such as anxiety and depression, relationship challenges or sexual or arousal challenges.  All of these can lead to a compulsive use of pornographic content. Simply taking away the child’s ability to access porn without addressing the underlying issues that are driving the behaviour will inevitably lead to a range of sexual and relationship challenges further down the line.” Elliott offers the following advice to today’s parents: Provide matter-of-fact, accurate sex education that is free of shame – “It’s important to talk about bodies using the biological, shame-free terminology for all body parts.  Discuss the role of sex in reproduction and the role of sex in bonding and healthy pleasure.  Focus on the care of our bodies and our mental health.  Talk about consent and what that looks like, how to give it and how to respect it.  Give your children a vision and blueprint for healthy relationships.” Be committed to non-judgement and be solutions-oriented – Be the wise guide your kids can come to when they need to talk about their distress.  Elliott says, “Parents can help their children deal with compulsive behaviours and tackle the underlying causes.  They can help them develop healthier ways for self-soothing and self-regulating without adding to the shame and guilt the child probably already feels in relation to their behaviour.” Adequately prepare your child – “Open communication is essential to helping your child navigate adolescence,” Elliott says, “Puberty comes along, and bodies develop.  It’s a time full of body hair, smells, spontaneous arousal and breast buds.  All these changes can be disconcerting and distressing for children who have not been adequately prepared for it.
