What Is the SSA Programme at Wingu Academy?

Real Support That Moves With You. At Wingu Academy, we don’t just offer an online curriculum—we offer real support. And at the heart of that support is our SSA Programme: a system designed to make sure every learner thrives, and every parent feels confident in the journey. Whether you’re new to online education or have been navigating it for a while, the SSA Programme exists to ensure you’re never left to figure things out alone. Here’s how it works: Weekly Check-In Documents Each week, your child’s SSA (Subject Support Advisor) prepares a progress checklist. This checklist helps learners stay focused on their goals and keeps parents in the loop with clear, actionable updates. No guesswork. No surprises. Just transparent progress tracking. Academic Accountability Partnership Wingu learners don’t just get access to teachers—they get a partner in their academic journey. SSAs motivate learners, celebrate milestones, and step in when support is needed. They’re not just checking boxes—they’re building confidence and momentum. Flexible and Responsive Support Every learner is unique, and so is every family’s rhythm. If something’s not working, we adjust. The SSA Programme includes flexible opt-out options and a responsive support approach. We believe in finding what works and improving it together. Termly Parent Feedback You know your child best. That’s why termly feedback forms are a key part of the SSA Programme. We use your input to refine our approach, strengthen our connection with you, and continuously raise the bar on what online learning support should be. Transition Support That Cares New to Wingu? Your SSA will walk beside your family during those first few crucial weeks. From navigating the dashboard to understanding assessments, they’re there to make sure the transition to online schooling is smooth, not overwhelming. Why Parents Love It Many of our families say their SSA feels like having a “digital au pair” for academics—someone who helps reduce stress at home, keeps students accountable, and helps learners develop real-world skills like time management and exam strategies. It’s peace of mind for parents, and practical, personal support for learners. Real Growth Needs Real Support At Wingu Academy, we believe that structure + care = success. The SSA Programme is one of the most powerful tools we offer to ensure every learner is known, supported, and set up to succeed. Because great online learning isn’t just about content—it’s about connection. Ready to experience the Wingu Way? Let’s build confidence, clarity, and progress together.

Academic Accountability Partnership

More Than Support—A Trusted Guide for Every Learner In many traditional schools, it’s easy for learners to become just another name on a register. They may sit in a classroom filled with dozens of students, moving at the pace of the group rather than one that suits their individual needs. At Wingu Academy, we believe education should feel personal and that every learner should be seen, supported, and guided in a way that reflects who they are and where they’re going. That’s why we created the Subject Support Advisor (SSA) Programme—a cornerstone of personalised support at Wingu. Each learner is matched with a dedicated SSA who acts as their academic accountability partner, ensuring they never have to navigate their studies alone. This partnership goes beyond reminders and to-do lists. SSAs check in regularly, track progress, encourage consistency, and offer real guidance. They are there not only when a student falls behind but also to help learners stay on pace, set achievable goals, and celebrate academic wins, big or small. But most importantly, SSAs help learners build lasting habits for success. From the early stages of the school year, they work with students to: This structured approach not only supports academic achievement but also nurtures life skills that learners carry well beyond school. Parents often describe the SSA as a kind of academic coach—someone who keeps their child motivated, engaged, and focused, especially during high-pressure periods like assessments or term-end deadlines. It’s a layer of support that lifts the weight from parents’ shoulders, while still keeping them informed and included in the journey. At Wingu, we know that true progress comes from consistent guidance, positive accountability, and a learning environment built on care. The SSA Programme ensures that every learner walks their path with confidence—and never walks it alone.

The Human Touch in a Digital World: Why Real Teachers Matter at Wingu Academy

In an era of rapid automation, AI bots, and pre-recorded content, many online platforms have forgotten the power of human connection. At Wingu Academy, we’re going against that trend — and with good reason. Every Wingu class is taught live by a qualified, human teacher. These aren’t just subject experts — they’re passionate educators who guide, encourage, and challenge learners in real time. That live presence means our students can ask questions, participate in discussions, and build relationships, just like in a traditional classroom. Why does this matter? Research shows that students learn better when they feel seen and supported. Human interaction improves retention, motivation, and confidence. At Wingu, it’s not just about getting through a syllabus — it’s about growing every learner’s potential, with people who genuinely care about the outcome. When we say “real learning,” we mean it — and it starts with real teachers.

Hatfield Online School

What is online schooling? – Hatfield Online School provides the answers

Online schooling is also known as e-learning or virtual learning, and is education that takes place over the internet. Online schools provide an alternative to traditional brick-and-mortar schools. Online schooling is distinct from home schooling, in that home schooling typically involves parents or guardians taking full responsibility for their child’s education; where accredited online schools will provide a structured curriculum for the learner to follow. With home schooling, it is up to the parents to plan the curriculum, choose the learning materials and educate their children. At Hatfield Online School, while we do require parental support and involvement in guiding their children through our platforms and structures, we provide the IEB curriculum, which is taught by fully qualified and SACE-registered teachers. Our learners log onto their “classroom” (hosted on Moodle) daily, and they engage with the content independently. They complete weekly activities and write weekly cycle tests under parental supervision.  At Hatfield Online School, we follow the asynchronous teaching model. This means your child can conduct their education any place, at any pace and any time. You structure your child’s own timetable according to your unique circumstances – for example you can fit in a rigorous sports training schedule, and adjust school times around that. The course material is organised into daily lessons, and the lessons are a combination of pre-recorded videos, text, audio clips, diagrams and other interactive materials. Teachers hold regular Online Group Meets to allow students to interact with each other, and there is a high level of personal communication between the students and our teachers, who are subject specialists. Weekly assessments are in the form of self-marking quizzes and teacher-marked worksheets. Bi-weekly cycle tests and biannual exams ensure a mastery of content. Our model raises independent and responsible students, who take ownership of their learning. Online Schooling vs. Homeschooling: Which is the Better Choice for Your Child in South Africa?

In South Africa, parents seeking alternatives to traditional schooling are often faced with two choices: online schooling and home schooling. While both offer flexibility and a personalised approach to education, the two models are distinctly different. Understanding these differences is crucial in making the best decision for your child’s future. Hatfield Online School is Bridging the Future – Today

Hatfield Online School was birthed out of our campus school, Hatfield Christian School, based in Pretoria. In 2008 we started our online school with 4 students. Our dream was to impact the next generation through technology, making education accessible to all. Since then, we have grown to a school enrolling over one thousand students per year!  Whether your child wants to study nationally or internationally, the IEB Senior Certificate opens doors in both arenas – something our hundreds of past matric students can attest to. With excellent subject specialists as teachers, our students have the world at their fingertips. Our staff are just one email or video call away, and a student can get one-on-one tuition from their teachers should they not grasp a concept. Technological advancements in every sphere of life, and the rapid rate at which it’s impacting the world means that the jobs our children will be filling in the future, probably haven’t even been created yet. In this dynamic environment, the right kind of education for your children becomes critical. Does your child need the kind of education that surpasses, and escapes the confines of the traditional classroom? Hatfield Online School not only bridges the gap between the present and the future, but also the gap between a world-class education and affordability. 10 Exam Prep Mistakes I Made In Maths (and How Your Child Can Learn From Them)

As a mathematics educator — and someone who once sat where your child is now — I understand how easy it is to fall into unhelpful study habits, especially when exam pressure builds. At one point, I struggled too. However, by recognising and overcoming these mistakes, I eventually earned a mathematics degree and helped many learners succeed. Today, I want to share 10 common exam prep mistakes I personally made — and more importantly, how you can help your child avoid them, build better habits, and achieve their full potential. Mistake 1: Cramming at the Last Minute In school, I sometimes left my revision until the very last few days of exams. I thought intense cramming would save me, but all it brought was stress, confusion, and shallow understanding. ➔ What Parents Can Do:Encourage your child to start studying early (even a month before).Just an hour or two each day can build deep understanding and reduce stress before exams. Mistake 2: Pulling an All-Nighter Before the Exam Once, I stayed up all night trying to “catch up.” I was so exhausted the next day that I couldn’t even answer simple questions. That exam did not go well! ➔ What Parents Can Do:Help your child plan ahead to avoid last-minute panic.Emphasise that a well-rested brain performs better. A good night’s sleep can be the difference between panic and clear thinking during the exam. Mistake 3: Relying Only on Past Papers and Memorising Memo Steps I used to believe that if I practised enough past papers, I would be fully prepared. I overlooked the fact that exams often include new question formats or structures, even if they test the same concept. Especially in subjects like mathematics, problem-solving skills are essential. ➔ What Parents Can Do:Remind your child to master the concepts first and practise problem-solving, not just memorising steps.Encourage them to review their syllabus or topic checklist. (Tip: They can ask their teacher for a breakdown if needed.)Understanding the basics ensures they can tackle any new question format confidently. Mistake 4: Not Fully Reading (and Understanding) Instructions In a rush, I often missed keywords and details in certain questions (e.g., “prove that the two angles are equal”), leading to unnecessary mistakes. In the given information, there is usually a hidden key to the answer. ➔ What Parents Can Do:Teach your child to slow down and carefully read each instruction.Understanding exactly what the question is asking often unlocks valuable marks. Mistake 5: Comparing Myself to Others I wasted precious time feeling discouraged when I thought my classmates were “getting it” faster than me. What I didn’t realise was that every learner is different — and that I needed to work with my own strengths. ➔ What Parents Can Do:Support your child in understanding their unique learning style.Visual learners, for example, can benefit from drawing diagrams or using colours to highlight key signs (e.g., pink for “+”, green for “-“).Remind them that growth happens at their own pace — comparison only steals focus and confidence. Mistake 6: Neglecting Topics I Didn’t Like When I felt weak in a topic, I would often avoid it, focusing only on my favourite sections. Unfortunately, those neglected topics came back to haunt me during exams. ➔ What Parents Can Do:Encourage your child to tackle weaker topics early, even if it feels uncomfortable.Good strategy: Facing difficult topics early builds confidence and reduces last-minute panic. Mistake 7: Leaving Questions Blank If I didn’t know how to approach a problem, I sometimes left it blank. I missed out on part marks that could have boosted my overall marks! ➔ What Parents Can Do:Remind your child: “Never leave a question blank!”Even a rough attempt — showing formulas, steps, or explaining what they know — can earn them valuable marks. Tip: Start with the easier questions first — this helps build momentum and saves more time for complex topics later. Mistake 8: Skipping Steps in Working Out I thought writing fewer steps (or solving problems in my head) would make me “look smart.” Instead, I lost method marks and also made small unnecessary errors, like missing the “-“ sign! ➔ What Parents Can Do:Teach your child to show all their working — every step matters. Tip: I often used colours to highlight signs (e.g., pink for “+”, green for “-“) and avoid careless mistakes. Mistake 9: Memorising Without Understanding Sometimes, I memorised formulas without truly grasping what they meant. This made it difficult to apply them when questions were framed differently. ➔ What Parents Can Do:Support your child in understanding why a formula or method works.Use simple guiding questions like: Building a deeper understanding of key concepts helps them adapt to new types of questions (even those high-level questions — they’re always in the exam and often carry a lot of marks). Mistake 10: Not Asking for Help When I didn’t understand a topic, I sometimes stayed quiet out of fear (in the classroom) — afraid to look “stupid” compared to others. But not asking questions only made things worse. ➔ What Parents Can Do:Create a safe space where it’s okay for your child to ask for help.Encourage them to raise questions early — whether with teachers, tutors, or at home.Remind them that every great learner asks questions — it’s a strength, not a weakness! Even Albert Einstein, one of the greatest minds in history, was known for asking endless questions. His curiosity, not instant knowledge, was the key to his genius. Growth Takes Time (And Small Steps Matter) In conclusion, mistakes are not the end — they are part of the learning journey.By helping your child build good study habits early, you’re not only preparing them for exams, but for real-world success too. Small daily habits lead to big results. Sit down with your child today and create a simple study plan. Each small effort now lays a stronger foundation for the future. Bonus: Exam Prep Checklist Here’s a simple checklist your child can use during exam season: Looking for some practice exams? You

Why Homeschooling Could Be the Ultimate Family Bonding Experience

When parents think about home and online schooling, the first thing that often comes to mind is academics: lesson plans, assessments, and schedules. But what’s often overlooked is one of its most powerful and lasting outcomes: the opportunity to strengthen family bonds through shared learning experiences. In an age of increasingly busy routines, tight schedules, and time spent apart, home and online schooling offers families something invaluable – the chance to grow and learn together. At Impaq, we’ve seen firsthand how the homeschooling journey becomes a way for families to reconnect, collaborate, and support one another in meaningful ways. Learning Together, Growing Together Unlike traditional schooling, where parents and children spend most of the day apart, home and online schooling allows families to take a more active role in one another’s daily lives. Parents now also become facilitators, mentors, and motivators. This creates space for meaningful conversations, collaborative problem-solving, and mutual support. “Homeschooling isn’t just about working through a syllabus at home,” says Louise Schoonwinkel, Managing Director at Optimi Schooling, of which Impaq is a registered trademark. “It’s about learning as a unit – celebrating progress, overcoming challenges together, and creating a shared educational journey that brings families closer.” A great example of this is Inge Thompson, a mother of three who is currently completing her Visual Arts course through Impaq’s homeschooling programme. Having returned to formal education later in life, Inge’s story is a reminder that learning doesn’t end after school, and that the home schooling model allows individuals and families to embrace lifelong learning together. “For these three years, I’ve told myself I just want to learn as much as I can and get this input for myself. It’s an enriching experience, and I want to give it my best,” says Inge. A Flexible Model That Adapts to Your Life Every family is different. That’s why flexibility in learning is so important. With Impaq’s structured curriculum, families can maintain academic progress while still creating space for real-life learning and everyday experiences. Whether it’s exploring nature, working on a science experiment in the kitchen, or reading together as a group, families can turn ordinary moments into valuable educational opportunities. “Our curriculum is designed to provide structure and guidance while giving families the flexibility to make learning personal and relevant,” says Schoonwinkel.  Even for adults returning to learning, this structure provides focus and momentum. Inge shares how the Impaq curriculum has helped her stay on track, “Impaq’s curriculum is really well set up. Even as a mom of three and an entrepreneur, the structure and deadlines help me stay focused and finish what I start – something I’ve struggled with in the past.” Support Every Step of the Way We understand that starting a home or online schooling journey can feel overwhelming, especially for families new to the experience. That’s why Impaq provides ongoing support, from subject specialists and tutors to easy-to-use online platforms and tools. This allows parents to focus on what matters most – supporting their children and creating a positive learning environment at home. “What makes home and online schooling work is not just the curriculum, but the confidence parents feel when they know they’re not doing it alone,” adds Schoonwinkel. “We walk the path with families, providing the structure and the support they need to succeed.” For learners like Inge, this support has been crucial. “I’m not just learning how to create a pretty picture – I’m learning to make art with meaning. That’s the real value of this journey.”

Helping Your Child Learn a Lot of Work Before Exams: Tips and Tricks for Parents

As exam time approaches, many parents wonder how to help their children revise a large amount of work without becoming overwhelmed. Whether it’s content-heavy subjects like Natural Sciences or History, or skill-based ones like Maths and English, it’s all about working smarter—not harder. Here are some tried-and-tested tips to help your child tackle their revision effectively and with confidence. 1. Break it Down into Manageable Chunks Trying to learn everything at once can feel impossible. Help your child divide their work into small, manageable sections. Use a study timetable to plan what to revise each day. Focus on one topic at a time rather than trying to do everything in one sitting. 2. Make Use of Visuals Children often remember things better when they can see the information. Encourage them to use: These tools not only make studying more fun, but also help learners make connections between ideas and recall them more easily in exams. 3. Repetition is Key Revisiting information multiple times helps move it from short-term to long-term memory. Encourage regular review of previously studied topics instead of cramming the night before. 4. Talk It Out Some children learn best by talking things through. Encourage your child to explain what they’ve learned to you, a sibling, or even a pet! If they can teach it clearly, they probably understand it well.  5. Keep it Active Sitting still for hours can make anyone lose focus. Try these methods to keep your child actively engaged in their learning: 6. Balance Work and Rest More work doesn’t always mean better results. A tired or stressed child won’t retain information easily. Make sure your child gets: A well-rested brain is a ready-to-learn brain. 7. Use Reliable Resources Having access to quality, age-appropriate resources can make all the difference. Twinkl offers everything you need for exam revision in one place: These resources help your child feel prepared, organised, and supported as they work through large sections of content. You can find all Twinkl’s practice assessments, tests and exams here: https://www.twinkl.co.za/l/p0upw You don’t have to be a teacher to help your child succeed—you just need to be present, patient, and encouraging. Praise the effort, guide the process, and remind them that it’s okay to take breaks and ask for help. With good preparation and your support, they’ll go into their exams feeling confident and capable.

Game, set, and match for matriculant Isabella Basson who bags 7 distinctions and a full 4-year tennis scholarship to The University of Tulsa

Isabella Basson, a past Grade 12 student at Hatfield Online School, has rightfully earned her place in the halls of academic excellence whilst continuing to shine on the tennis courts, proving that you can live out your sporting dream and excel in your academics. 19 January 2024 marked a day of great excitement for Isabella Basson, after the IEB confirmed that she had obtained 7 distinctions in Accounting, Afrikaans FAL, English, Geography, Life Orientation, Mathematics and Physical Sciences. Furthermore, she placed in the Top 1% of the country for Afrikaans and Geography. This remarkable set of results has secured Isabella a full 4-year tennis scholarship to The University of Tulsa in the USA, where she will study Business and work towards her goal of playing tennis professionally. This was no easy feat – she was up against the best in the world and had to demonstrate a balance between academic rigour and outstanding sports performance. Isabella joined Hatfield Online School in her Grade 11 year when she realised she needed the flexibility of online schooling. There were times when Isabella only knew her tournament schedule a day in advance, yet her teachers would reschedule tests or submission deadlines to timeslots that worked for her. For Isabella: “That was one of my highlights – the teachers’ attitudes and understanding towards everything, even if they don’t understand tennis.” But as Isabella explains, it is not only about a flexible test schedule: “You have great teachers, you have access to them 24/7 wherever you are, you do your full curriculum, you get the best learning experience, you can write your tests and do your projects … and I could carry on with tennis the way that I was.” She expressed that not only was the structured layout of the content, quality of learning material, expertise of the teachers and timely feedback a tremendous help, but she felt her experience of learning online was more personal. Due to the nature of online schooling, she found herself in a position where she had to reach out to her teachers if she was unsure of a concept. Her heightened sense of responsibility for her own academics fostered one-on-one, personalised interaction with her teachers.  In addition to her amazing academic results, since joining Hatfield Online School, herInternational Tennis Federation (ITF) rankingforWomen’s U/18 improved from 3093 in August 2022 to 712 by the end of 2023. In her matric year, between writing her prelims and final examinations, she ranked 3rd nationally in the Girls U/18 section. Isabella’s mom expressed her deep gratitude to all staff at the school, “They have been amazing. If it weren’t for this vehicle and their support and their understanding, she would not have been able to do this.” The principal of Hatfield Online School, Ms Claudine van Tonder, explains that Isabella is the quintessential example of how online education can help students thrive. “Isabella used the flexibility that our school offered her. She worked exceptionally hard at her academics, whilst simultaneously committing to a gruelling training schedule. We are so proud of her!” Isabella is a true beacon of courage and commitment, proving that sports and academics are not opponents, they flourish together under the right conditions.  Written by Shannon Black

The Transition to Grade 4: Why Curro Online is the Perfect Path for Your Child

Your child is in Grade 4, or preparing to enter Grade 4 next year, and with this comes a wave of mixed emotions: excitement, but also concern and perhaps a sense of overwhelm. As parents, you’ve watched your child grow, and now, as they take the next step in their educational journey, it feels like everything is changing. The leap from foundation phase (Grades 1 to 3) to Grade 4 is significant, demanding more independence, self-discipline, and responsibility from your child. In addition, the thought of them navigating this shift online, without the familiar comfort of in-person teaching, can feel daunting. Are they ready? Can they thrive in an online environment where their teacher is behind a screen and their interactions with classmates aren’t face-to-face?  It’s normal to feel uneasy about the unknown. But here’s the truth: online learning is not only a viable option for Grade 4 learners, it could actually be the ideal environment to help your child succeed and grow in ways you may not anticipate.  South Africa is also part of the 4IR movement, where technology is transforming every sector, including education. Curro Online is perfectly positioned to provide learners with a modern, flexible, and innovative learning environment that prepares them for the future. In this article, we’ll show you how we offer the structure, support, and flexibility your child needs, while debunking the myths that might be holding you back. As a two-time winner of the Best Online School award at the Best of Joburg Readers’ Choice Awards in 2023 and 2024, we’re confident in the proven success of our approach.  Let’s get into it …  Understanding the reluctance: the growing need for change It’s easy to see why parents are reluctant to transition younger children into an online learning environment. In Grade 4, children are still developing their foundational skills and emotional maturity. Many parents believe that they should be physically present, guiding their children through each step of their educational journey. This is especially true when it comes to children who are still navigating the complexities of time management, study habits, and independent learning. The concern is often that an online environment might exacerbate their dependency on their parents. Many parents also face the frustrating reality of having to take on more responsibilities than expected – assisting their children with tasks that they feel should be handled by the teacher. A common sentiment is, ‘Why am I doing all this work?’. Parents can find themselves spending hours helping with assignments, explaining concepts over and over, and managing their children’s daily routine (which is also true of any traditional school). This leads to burnout and dissatisfaction, as it feels like they’re doing much of the learning themselves. And with online learning, there’s the added worry that these frustrations will be magnified, or worse – that their child could become isolated, missing out on essential social development. These are valid concerns, and they deserve to be addressed. Addressing the concerns: online learning for Grade 4 offers more, not less Here’s the good news: learning at Curro Online has been intentionally designed to foster independence, confidence, and growth – all while ensuring your child is never alone on their journey. By offering a blended approach that includes live lessons and recorded sessions, we enable learners to take control of their learning while still having access to the support they need. 1. Live lessons with real teachers One of the main fears parents have is that online learning may not provide the level of interaction that children need. At Curro Online, this is far from the case. We have live, interactive lessons with experienced, qualified teachers who are passionate about their subjects and dedicated to your child’s success. These live lessons ensure that learners are actively engaged with their teachers and peers in real-time, creating an environment that encourages participation, critical thinking, and group collaboration. In addition, it is indisputable that children at this age LOVE playing and enjoy games. At Curro Online, teachers make learning through online games possible! Our learners enjoy competing against one another and testing or enhancing their understanding of concepts taught in class, through online games.  2. Catch-up opportunities for missed lessons Life happens. Sometimes, your child might miss a lesson due to illness or another unexpected reason. Unlike traditional schools where missed lessons can easily fall through the cracks, our online learning platform records each lesson, allowing your child to catch up at their own pace without falling behind. 3. Learner support unit: beyond academics A Grade 4 child’s needs extend far beyond academics. At this stage, learners are not only building their knowledge, but also developing emotional intelligence and resilience. Curro Online’s Learner Support Unit provides comprehensive support that addresses academic, emotional, and psychological needs. Whether your child is struggling with a specific concept or facing personal challenges, our support unit is here to guide them, ensuring they have the tools to thrive. This holistic approach sets Curro Online apart, ensuring that your child’s overall well-being is prioritised. Our passionate and supportive teachers also play a pivotal role in ensuring that learners thrive academically, emotionally and psychologically. As such, they also serve as a great source of support for learners at Curro Online. This plays out through check-in messages/calls from teachers, as well as classroom discussions pertaining to various aspects of children’s well-being.  4. Extramural activities that foster connection Perhaps one of the most common concerns we hear from parents is that online learning lacks social opportunities. At Curro Online, we take this seriously and offer a diverse range of extramural activities designed to encourage social interaction and peer-to-peer connection. Here are just a few of the exciting opportunities available to your child:  By participating in these activities, your child will have ample opportunities to make new friends, work collaboratively, and enhance their social skills – all within a safe and structured online environment.  Why online learning for Grade 4 is the right choice At this point, you may

Exploring the Magic of Twinkl’s GeWiZz Series: An Interview with Author Joanne Stead

Children’s books have the power to spark imagination, teach important life lessons, and create lasting memories. The Twinkl GeWiZz series does just that, transporting young readers to the vast plains of Southern Africa with three unforgettable characters—Geraldine Giraffe, Wilber Wildebeest, and Zenia Zebra. We had the opportunity to speak with Joanne Stead, the creative mind behind this beloved series, to learn more about her inspiration, creative process, and the impact these stories have on early childhood development. The Inspiration Behind Twinkl GeWiZz For Joanne, the idea for the Twinkl GeWiZz series was born out of her love for overlanding trips across Southern Africa. “I love watching the game as they go about their ‘daily business,’ observing their habits,” she shares. “Every now and then, they do something strange or funny, and that sparks my imagination.” One such moment of inspiration came during a game walk in Botswana, where she observed a herd of zebras, some wildebeest, and a lone giraffe. Seeing these animals together in the wild, she wondered what it would be like if they were friends—each bringing their unique strengths and personalities to the group. And just like that, Geraldine, Wilber, and Zenia were born. Lessons Woven into Every Story Beyond the entertaining adventures, each Twinkl GeWiZz book carries an important message. Whether it’s friendship, problem-solving, or perseverance, Joanne carefully selects themes that resonate with young readers. “I pick up on issues that young children face daily,” she explains. “Children often find it difficult to express their feelings, but seeing their emotions played out by animals may help them open up.” One example is GeWiZz at the Waterhole, inspired by an actual sighting of a young elephant struggling to reach a reservoir. The book teaches perseverance and the importance of asking for help—concepts children can relate to in their own lives. Bringing the Stories to Life Writing isn’t the only part of the creative journey—illustrations play a huge role in engaging young readers. Joanne is full of praise for illustrator Hayley Callopy, who has helped bring the Twinkl GeWiZz characters to life. “It’s as if she’s in my head,” Joanne says. “I’m always amazed at how she captures their feelings in their facial expressions.” By pairing meaningful stories with captivating artwork, the series encourages children to connect with the characters and their emotions. Supporting Literacy and Emotional Growth The Twinkl GeWiZz series is more than just bedtime stories—it’s a tool for literacy development and emotional education. “The importance of reading daily cannot be stressed enough,” Joanne says. “Being read to sparks imagination, helps with creative writing, and builds vocabulary. Children often don’t have the words to express their feelings, but books like these give them a way to explore and understand emotions.” Through engaging storytelling, the series also serves as a conversation starter between children, parents, and teachers—helping to address topics like loneliness, friendship, and resilience in a way that feels natural and relatable. What’s Next for Twinkl GeWiZz? Joanne’s passion for storytelling isn’t slowing down anytime soon. With three new books in the works and an upcoming trip to Zimbabwe, more adventures for Geraldine, Wilber, and Zenia are on the horizon. When asked to sum up the Twinkl GeWiZz series in just three words, Joanne’s response is simple yet powerful: “Funny Life Lessons.” Whether you’re looking for a heartwarming bedtime story, a tool for teaching important values, or a beautifully illustrated journey into the African wilderness, the Twinkl GeWiZz series has something special to offer. Why Homeschooling Is Becoming the Preferred Choice for Many Families

In recent years, homeschooling has seen a remarkable rise in popularity, with families around the world re-evaluating how they approach their children’s education. What was once considered a niche option has evolved into a mainstream alternative, appealing to parents seeking a personalised, flexible, and values-driven learning experience. Online schools like Wingu Academy have become trusted partners in this journey, blending the benefits of homeschooling with structured, globally recognised education. This article explores why homeschooling is gaining momentum, the challenges families face, and how Wingu Academy provides a seamless and supportive transition for families embracing this approach. The Rise of Homeschooling: Why Families Are Making the Switch Personalised Learning for Every Child Every child learns differently, yet traditional classroom settings often rely on a one-size-fits- all model. Homeschooling empowers parents to tailor their child’s education to suit individual strengths, weaknesses, and interests. This personalised approach not only boosts academic performance but also nurtures a love for learning. At Wingu Academy, this philosophy is at the core of its personalised education pathways, which use diagnostic assessments to customise learning plans. One parent noted, “Wingu has transformed how my child learns. The teachers understand her pace and adapt to her needs, something that was missing in her previous school.” Flexibility to Suit Modern Lifestyles Homeschooling offers families unparalleled flexibility, allowing students to learn at their own pace and adjust their schedules around personal or family commitments. This freedom is particularly appealing to parents who travel frequently or those whose children pursue extracurricular passions, such as sports or performing arts. With Wingu Academy’s blended learning model, students can access live classes or work through self-paced modules anytime, anywhere. One parent shared, “Our family moves often due to work, and Wingu has given us stability in education, no matter where we are.” Safe and Supportive Learning Environments For many families, concerns about bullying, peer pressure, or a misaligned school culture are key motivators for choosing homeschooling. Parents want their children to learn in an environment that fosters emotional well-being, positive relationships, and self-confidence. Wingu Academy addresses these concerns through its Wellness Hub, providing students with access to counselling, emotional support, and programmes that promote resilience and mental health. Values-Driven Education Homeschooling allows parents to integrate their family values into their children’s education, whether cultural, religious, or ethical. By choosing homeschooling, families can ensure that the content and delivery of education align with their personal beliefs. Wingu Academy complements this approach with its diverse curriculum options, including both British International Curriculum and South African CAPS pathways, enabling parents to select the educational framework that best suits their values and aspirations. Overcoming Challenges in Homeschooling While homeschooling offers numerous advantages, it’s not without its challenges. Families often face concerns about maintaining academic rigour, ensuring socialisation, and managing the workload of teaching at home. Maintaining Academic Standards Parents often worry about providing a well-rounded education that meets rigorous academic standards. Wingu Academy alleviates these concerns by offering an internationally accredited curriculum and a team of qualified educators. Regular assessments and progress tracking ensure that students stay on track. Socialisation Opportunities The myth that homeschooling isolates children is quickly being debunked. Wingu Academy fosters socialisation through online clubs, house systems, and regular meet-ups, allowing students to connect with peers across different locations. Activities like the Mini Mozarts club and Wingu House Competitions provide opportunities for collaboration and teamwork. A parent from Zambia shared, “The social aspect has been wonderful. My child feels like they have friends, even though we live in a remote area.” Parental Involvement Teaching children at home can feel overwhelming, especially for parents juggling work or multiple responsibilities. Wingu Academy supports parents with resources like learning coaches, detailed lesson plans, and weekly teacher-parent consultations, ensuring that parents are partners in, not sole managers of, their children’s education. The Role of Wingu Academy in the Homeschooling Journey Wingu Academy bridges the gap between traditional homeschooling and structured schooling, providing a unique blend of independence and support. Here’s how Wingu enhances the homeschooling experience: Testimonials: Families Share Their Wingu Experience Choose Wingu Academy for your educational journey! Unlocking the Joy of Maths: How to Make Maths Fun for Your Child

Every child has unique strengths, and while some may naturally gravitate toward numbers, others might need a little extra support. As parents, it can be tough to help a child who doesn’t enjoy maths — but the good news is that maths doesn’t have to feel like a chore! By incorporating everyday activities and playful strategies, you can spark curiosity and turn maths into a fun, rewarding experience. Twinkl’s free Make Maths Fun guides are packed with ideas to help parents bring maths to life, but here are some simple ways to start right away: 1. Make Maths Practical Maths is everywhere — from baking to budgeting. Invite your child to help measure ingredients, count change at the shop, or plan a holiday route. Want to level up the fun? Let them design a house using Lego or toy bricks! They can estimate how many bricks they’ll need, measure dimensions, and build their mini dream home. 2. Play Games That Build Maths Skills Games are a fantastic way to sneak maths into playtime. Classic games like Rummikub, Monopoly, Bingo, Battleship, and Uno encourage problem-solving, strategic thinking, and number skills. Plus, playing together strengthens social bonds and teaches valuable life lessons like patience and perseverance. 3. Find the Maths in Everyday Fun Arts and crafts? There’s maths in that too! Drawing and painting explore geometry and symmetry, while puzzles, tangrams, and Lego sets build spatial awareness and pattern recognition. Even activities like folding paper for origami introduce mathematical concepts in an engaging way. 4. Bring Friends and Family Into the Fun Maths can be a social experience! Try adding riddles or brainteasers to mealtime conversations, or encourage your child to form a maths study group with friends. Building Stronger Bonds: How Parent-Teacher Communication Boosts Your Child’s Success

Parents and teachers are partners in a child’s educational journey. After all, children spend a significant portion of their week with their teachers — so open, respectful communication is essential for supporting academic progress, addressing emotional or behavioural concerns, and fostering trust. Twinkl offers a wealth of resources to help parents navigate school communication, but let’s explore some simple ways to strengthen this connection right away: 1. Choose the Right Communication Channels Whether through WhatsApp groups, communication apps, or in-person chats, finding the best way to connect with your child’s teacher is key. Remember to keep messages respectful and concise, focusing on school-related topics to maintain a positive, productive atmosphere. 2. Respect the Teacher’s Morning Routine Mornings are a busy time as teachers welcome learners and set the tone for the day. If you have concerns, consider requesting a meeting instead of raising issues during drop-off. This ensures your child’s teacher can give your concern the attention it deserves without disrupting the class. 3. Be Open to Constructive Feedback Hearing that your child needs extra support or has behavioural challenges can be tough, but it’s important to remember that teachers share feedback to help your child thrive. Approach these conversations with an open mind, and if you disagree, express your thoughts calmly to maintain a collaborative relationship. 4. Be Mindful of Teachers’ Time Teachers juggle many responsibilities, so try to keep communication brief and focused, saving longer discussions for scheduled meetings. And unless it’s an emergency, avoid reaching out during evenings or weekends to respect their personal time. 5. Show Appreciation Teaching is a demanding job, and small gestures of gratitude can make a big difference. A heartfelt thank-you note or kind words during a conversation can strengthen your relationship and brighten a teacher’s day. Working Together for Your Child’s Success When parents and teachers communicate with mutual respect and support, they create an enriching environment where children can flourish. By staying connected, appreciating each other’s roles, and using thoughtful communication strategies, you can help make school a positive, nurturing space for your child. Breaking Barriers: Helping Your Child Shine

Every child is a little star with their own way of learning and growing. But sometimes, those learning journeys come with a few speed bumps, and that’s perfectly okay! Whether your child is finding it tricky to focus, struggling to read, or facing sensory challenges, recognising these hurdles is the first step to supporting them. What Are Barriers to Learning? Barriers to learning can show up in lots of ways. Maybe your child has ADHD, dyslexia, or struggles with numbers (dyscalculia). Perhaps they face sensory challenges like hearing loss or a visual impairment. Emotional hurdles, like anxiety or attachment issues, can also make focusing a bit harder. For some children, conditions like autism or foetal alcohol syndrome call for extra-special strategies to help them succeed. But here’s the thing: these challenges don’t define your child! With a bit of understanding and the right tools, they can absolutely thrive. Small Changes, Big Differences Supporting your child doesn’t have to mean massive changes. Sometimes, it’s the little things that make the biggest difference—like adding a quiet corner at home, trying a new way to explain a tricky concept, or working with their teacher to adjust classroom strategies. Finding help can sometimes be challenging. At Twinkl, we believe every child deserves to feel confident and capable. That’s why we’ve put together resources to help parents and teachers work through barriers to learning.  You’re not alone on this journey! Integrated Learning: Where Wellness and Learning Meet

Learning is about creating understanding, building confidence, and developing a lifelong ability to engage with the world – not just memorising and learning facts. But for true healthy learning to occur, we need more than just information. We need wellness. This is where integrated learning comes in—a whole-person approach that recognises the deep connection between emotional wellbeing, cognitive function, whole-person wellness, and academic success. Instead of treating learning difficulties or focusing on performance, we create an environment fostering health, resilience, and meaningful engagement.                    Play Learn Develop – Hug in a Bag (Whale)  Why Learning Needs Wellness A salutogenic approach to learning asks: How do we create health? Instead of focusing on what’s wrong or what’s missing, we look at how we can add to a learner’s experience—supporting them in ways that strengthen their confidence, emotional regulation, and ability to process and retain information. We focus on how their strengths can build up the person, but also address their challenges. When we integrate wellness into learning, we see: Bringing Learning & Wellness Together Integrated learning is not a one-size-fits-all model. It’s about meeting each learner where they are (their current capabilities) and creating strategies that work for their unique strengths, challenges, and needs. Effective and integrated learning is for all individuals as it provides space for everyone to reach their potential. Some key elements of this approach include: Creating Lasting Change When wellness is prioritised within learning, the experience is shifted from stress and frustration to growth, resilience, and meaningful progress. It’s not just about getting through school; it’s about creating a strong foundation for lifelong learning and wellbeing. Learning should feel safe, supported, and rewarding. By embracing a whole-person, integrative approach, learners are empowered to thrive.

Students participate in house challenges and events, which encourage teamwork and foster school spirit. One student reflected, “Being part of House Kifaru makes me feel like I belong to something bigger. I love cheering my teammates on during competitions!” The Role of Teachers and Technology in Community Building 1. Bela Bill: What it means for parents and how Impaq stays unshaken by the shift

The Basic Education Laws Amendment (BELA) Bill stays a hot topic for South African parents. But more so for those who homeschool their children. With its recent progress through Parliament, parents are asking: What does this mean for homeschooling? How will it affect my child’s education? Impaq stands firm in guiding parents and learners through this evolving landscape. So, let’s dive into what you need to know and how we’re staying ahead of the shift. Home education is here to stay Homeschooling is still a legal and valid alternative to traditional schooling. Despite concerns, the BELA Bill does not change this right. However, it does reinforce a few registration requirements for homeschooled learners. Parents of learners in Grades 1 to 9 must now register their children with their Provincial Department of Education. Although this rule has existed for years, the government now strongly emphasises it. While this may seem like an extra step, registration ensures: Curriculum and assessments: what stays the same? The biggest concern about the BELA Bill is the department’s oversight of home education curriculums. This regulation is not new. South Africa’s national curriculum (CAPS) has always provided a clear learning framework for schools and parents. Parents still have the freedom to structure their child’s education if their curriculum aligns with CAPs. Impaq ensures that all learning materials and assessments exceed these benchmarks, giving parents peace of mind. The BELA Bill also confirms that FET learners (Grades 10–12) must register with a credible assessment body to earn their National Senior Certificate (NSC). Impaq learners are registered with SACAI, a Umalusi-accredited body. This ensures their qualifications stay credible, both nationally and internationally. The role of tutors and support systems The BELA Bill also clarifies the role of tutors. While tutors stay an important support system for homeschooling families, they cannot function as independent schools. They must not present themselves as institutions or independently issue report cards. Impaq ensures tutors work with parents. The goal is to ease learning rather than replace the home-educating parent. The Optimi Learning Portal (OLP) stays the digital platform that helps parents in many ways. It allows parents to keep the learning journey structured and compliant by allowing them to: How Impaq stays unshaken While the BELA Bill introduces procedural changes, Impaq has been running within these guidelines for years. Our structured homeschooling approach ensures that learners: We empower parents and learners by removing obstacles rather than creating them. That’s why we continue to streamline the registration process, provide clear guidance, and ensure our resources meet all legal and quality assurance requirements. What should parents do now? If you are currently homeschooling—or considering it—here’s how you can stay ahead: The future of home education Change can be unsettling, but home education stays a thriving and credible choice with the right information and support. Impaq is still committed to walking this journey with parents, ensuring that learners receive a high-quality education that is recognized and respected. The BELA Bill is not the end of homeschooling—it’s another chapter in its evolution. With Impaq by your side, you can confidently move forward, knowing your child’s education is in good hands.
