In 2023 skincare is the new makeup – SKNLogic tells us why

For the past couple of years, women all over the world have embraced the natural makeup look, and by the looks of things, “no makeup” makeup is here to stay. Pre-pandemic, we were contouring à la Kim Kardashian, but with the rise of Covid-19 and national lockdowns, the focus shifted from makeup to skincare. We saw a major rise in self-care practices and more thought and care went into daily skincare regimes.

Post-pandemic, skincare is still tops. Makeup has gone from high definition to barely-there and dewy, allowing the natural skin to shine through. In fact, skincare has gained such focus that we’re willing to say it’s become the new makeup.

If you love the natural trend and want to dial down on makeup, it’s time to step up your skincare routine. Achieving and maintaining your best skin means sticking to a daily skincare regime that incorporates high-performance ingredients that nourish, repair and protect.

Not sure where to start? We recommend mastering the basics – here’s how.

Double cleanse

Double-cleansing is essential to every skincare routine because cleansing once with a regular cleanser is not enough to remove all traces of makeup, impurities and bacteria. Not only will your products penetrate your skin better if it is thoroughly cleansed, but you will also be less likely to develop breakouts and blackheads. We recommend starting off with a pre-cleanse product to remove makeup as well as other impurities. SKNLogic Remove (R165.00) contains pineapple and cucumber extract and gently yet effectively removes makeup, oil and impurities without drying the skin. Follow with a good quality facial cleanser like SKNLogic Cleanse Wash (R218.00). An antioxidant facial wash, it gently lifts impurities from the skin while pomegranate extract tones and soothes the skin, leaving it supple and refreshed.

Regular exfoliation

Exfoliation is the key to a smooth and clear complexion, because it removes dry and dead skin cells that would otherwise clog pores and lead to breakouts. Depending on your skin type, once or twice a week is sufficient. SKNLogic Exfoliate Enzymatic(R210.00) is a powerful skin polisher that combines natural and chemical exfoliants to remove dead skin cells, refine skin texture and enhance penetration of actives into skin. It contains papaya extract which is as an exfoliating enzyme that also works to repair the skin.

Antioxidants

Antioxidant serums have the ability to transform a skincare routine from good, to great. We recommend using a vitamin C serum in the morning – it helps to protect the skin from environmental aggressors and free radicals during the day, plus it brightens and helps treat and prevent pigmentation. SKNLogic C15 Booster (R355) contains 15% pure vitamin C to visibly brighten uneven skin while improving the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.

Use a vitamin A (retinol) serum in the evening – the holy grail of anti-ageing ingredients, vitamin A helps skin cells turn over faster, delays the onset of the various signs of ageing and improves skin texture and clarity. SKNLogic Retinol 0.5 (R280.00) has a fast-absorbing, encapsulated retinol formula that reduces the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and hyperpigmentation. Added Soyaglycone maximises the effect of retinol to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, refine uneven skin texture and treat hyper pigmentation.

Hydration

After applying your serum, it’s time to give your skin a moisture boost. Hydrated skin looks and feels plumper, so choose a moisturiser that locks in moisture. SKNLogic Moist (R172.00) is a great everyday option for skins that aren’t excessively thirsty. This day and night cream hydrates, rejuvenates and balances the skin, and is ideal for balanced and combination skins. It contains pomegranate extract which acts as a natural toner while protecting the skin from free radicals.

If your skin is dry, try SKNLogic Moist Supreme (R172.00). This moisture-replenishing day and night cream is designed to combat dry skin and reduce the signs of premature ageing. It contains fig extract which is an excellent hydrator and provides a gentle tightening effect to the skin.

Sun protection

The sun is the biggest threat to our skin, with UVA rays having the potential to physically burn our skin, and UVB rays having the potential to accelerate ageing, cause hyperpigmentation and encourage the formation of lines and wrinkles. It is essential to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays all year round by applying a broad-spectrum SPF product every single day. SKNLogic Protect SPF 40 (R315.00) is a full spectrum sun protection cream that provides broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection and anti-ageing benefits. It goes beyond UVA and UVB protection to help defend from blue light (digital pollution) and pollution and Infrared light emitted by the sun. It repairs DNA damage caused by free radicals while mitigating the damage from environmental and digital exposure.

With this simple yet effective skincare routine you can achieve your best skin and embrace the barely there makeup trend with confidence.

Prevent premature ageing AND correct DNA damage

Nourish

Whatever your skin type, Nourish can help you maintain healthy, youthful-looking skin How many selfies do you take before deciding on one you like? How many filters do you scroll through to find the most flattering before you hit “post”? Let’s face it. We all want to look like the very best version of ourselves for as long as possible. Thing is, we live in the real world, not a digital one, where our skin is constantly exposed to aggressors like free-radicals and DNA-damaging UV rays. While we won’t necessarily see consequences in our 20s, the damage only accumulates. Eventually, as we move towards our 30s, it becomes visible as fine lines, wrinkles, a loss of firmness and pigmentation occurs. Fortunately, there’s a lot you can do to ensure you still look picture perfect as the years march on. By taking good care of your skin right now, using an advanced system that can prevent the future signs of aging as well as correct DNA damage, you can easily maintain healthy, youthful-looking skin. This is where Lamelle Nourish comes in.

Nourish – not your average anti-ager

Most skincare ranges focus on protecting your skin from some of the elements that contribute to premature aging. Nourish, however, defends your skin from ALL of them and then takes things further by correcting indirect DNA damage. Many don’t realise it, but free radicals activated inside the nucleus of cells are able to damge DNA, creating “kinks” referred to as dimers. If left untreated, dimers can morph into a mutation as well as lead to several types of cancer. Fortunately, Nourish contains a DNA damage-correcting enzyme – one that’s exclusive to the range and shown to repair DNA kinks before they can cause any trouble. As far as premature ageing prevention goes, Nourish is formulated to address every aspect, not just some of them. The range’s luxurious-feeling formulations serve up potent antioxidants, powerful vitamin blends and anti-inflammatory botanicals to ensure your skin gets everything it needs to beat the hands of time. The range’s luxurious-feeling formulations serve up potent antioxidants, powerful vitamin blends and anti-inflammatory botanicals to ensure your skin gets everything it needs to beat the hands of time.

Nourish is for EVERY skin We get it. You’re busy. This is why Nourish is a streamlined system. No triple cleanses and quadruple serum layering required. No sketchy jade rollers to improve penetration. Just cutting-edge science and hard-working products that will suit all skin types.

The only time you’ll have to take your pick is when it comes to choosing a moisturiser – Nourish Revitalise Cream for dry/combination skin or Nourish Revitalise Lite Cream for oily/combination skin. The latter is made using an advanced hydrating complex that delivers the moisture every skin needs, but without any unnecessary weight.

Ultimately, if you’re looking to prevent the signs of premature aging while targeting a major contributing factor – unmitigated DNA damage – Nourish is the only skincare collection that can help you do it. Once you discover the difference, there’s no looking back.

NEW AUTUMN WINTER COLOUR COLLECTIONS – ICONIC & COLOR VIBE WITH ADDED SILICON

What is silicon (silicium)?

Silicon is the chemical element with atomic number 14, symbol Si. It is the 2nd most abundant element in the Earth’s crust, after oxygen (about 26%). It does not exist in nature in a free form, but in the formof silicon dioxide (SiO2) as amorphous silica (in sand), mineral silica (quartz, …) or other silicates (kaolinite, mica, …).

Silicon is one of the beneficial minerals specifically absorbed by plants and is essential for their proper growth. It is present in human connective tissues (skin, aorta, bones, hair, tendons, …).

The benefits of silicon

Silicon plays a major role in the resistance and flexibility of connective tissues. In the skin, it has a protective effect by strengthening the skin barrier, accelerating the healing processes and improving the clinical signs associated with age as well as the quality of nails and hair.

In the body, only organic silicon can be assimilated. Organic silicon derivatives are therefore of particular interest in cosmetic products, because they allow the bioavailability of silicon in the skin, hair andnails, in order to strengthen them. As a reminder, inorganic silicon (example: silica, talc, mica, …) only gives a mechanical protective effect as a mineral filler.

Silicon at MAVALA

Inorganic silicon is found in particular in Mava-White, Color-Matt and Ridge Filler.

Organic silicon is now present in the two new nail polish collections – Iconic Color’s and Color Vibe Collection, in the form of an organic silicon derivative (INCI: Dimethyl Oxobenzo Dioxasilane). Byincreasing the level of silicon present in the nails, it thus contributes to improve their quality and resistance.

Practical tips on how to keep your kids safe online

If you have been on any social media platform these past few weeks you might have seen the terrifying image of a creature with long black hair and bulging eyes. Warnings about the Momo Challenge, an online game in which children are encouraged to harm themselves, have gone viral. But some sources have now confirmed that the challenge is nothing but a hoax designed to scare parents (and children).

Whether the Momo Challenge is real or not, online safety remains a concern for every 21st century parent. The Momo Challenge might have been fake, but there are real threats out there, like cartoons on YouTube being spliced with instructions on how to commit suicide – videos that have been confirmed to exist. It’s important for parents to take preventative measures to keep their kids safe on the internet. While limiting screen time is a good place to start, here are some other things you can do to keep your kids safe, both online and offline.

Establish some ground rules

With younger children you can control (almost) everything they see online but older children are tech-savvy and can easily find themselves viewing content that might be inappropriate for their age. It’s important to have an open conversation and to encourage them to speak to you or any other adult they trust if they encounter anything in the digital realm that appears frightening or threatening. SafeKids.com, a site that promotes internet safety for kids, lists a set of criteria that you can discuss with your kids about what they should and should not do on the internet.

Keep technology in a common space

It is best to keep technology like smartphones, tablets and computers in a common space for all family members to use. The computer screen should be visible from other parts of the room and should not be turned towards a wall.

This way children can see how the internet should be used and how useful it can be, e.g. doing research for a project, looking up an address, or watching educational videos. Children are also less likely to look for inappropriate content with a parent in the room.

Pay for content

The problem with free content, like the videos on YouTube and YouTube Kids, is that anyone can upload videos without it being curated or approved. And it is not only the content you need to be worried about, the advertisements showed between videos can also be harmful. You might want to consider paying for good children’s entertainment, e.g. Netflix, Showmax, children’s DVDs, or advert-free games designed for young players.

Use a child-friendly search engine

While most of us rely on Google to find what we are looking for, you might want to switch to an alternative search engine like Kiddle or Kid’s Search when your children are browsing online. These child-specific search engines aim to create a safe platform for children to explore the internet.

If you want to continue using Google as your preferred search engine, enable Google SafeSearch on your computer. Here’s how:

  1. Go to google.com
  2. Google anything and select Settings on the right.
  3. Select Turn on SafeSearch.
  4. Explicit images, videos, and websites will now be blocked from the Google Search results.

Make Apps Safe

Or as safe as they can be. On YouTube you can select restricted mode, an optional setting that restricts the availability of potentially mature or objectionable content. Here’s how to turn restricted mode on:

  1. Go to the account icon .
  2. Click Restricted Mode.
  3. In the dialog box that appears, toggle restricted mode to on.

Restricted mode works on the browser or device level, so you must turn it on for each browser or device you are using. For safety, turn restricted mode on for all the browsers (e.g. Google Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, etc.) loaded on your computer, smart TV, tablet or smartphone. You can also lock restricted mode. This will prevent anyone else, your kids included, from changing the settings. Watch this short video to learn how to lock restricted mode.

Keep in mind, however, that switching to a child-friendly search engine, selecting SafeSearch on Google or restricted mode on YouTube is not 100% accurate and that some inappropriate content may still slip through. It is therefore important to be mindful of your child’s online activities and to teach your child about internet safety.
