Reimagine play – how a plush toy can help your child with anxiety

Globally anxiety among children is increasing and is a common concern among parents. With today’s fast-paced world and exposure to new challenges, one surprisingly effective simple tool proven to help alleviate a child’s anxiety is the use of plush toys. This is according to Glenn Ambrose, Country Manager for ZURU who says that these soft, comforting companions offer more than just a cuddly presence—they can serve as powerful tools to help children manage their emotions. The World Health Organisation reports that globally, one in seven 10-19-year-olds experiences a mental disorder, accounting for 13% of the global burden of disease in this age group. Depression, anxiety and behavioural disorders are among the leading causes of illness and disability among adolescents, suicide being the fourth leading cause of death among 15–29-year-olds. The rates of stress, fear and loneliness are much higher and they keep growing. Comforting science Research published in the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry found that 40% of children use transitional objects, like plush toys, as a coping mechanism during stressful situations providing a tangible source of comfort that can help reduce feelings of anxiety and improve emotional regulation. A study conducted from 2016 to 2019 at The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that approximately 6 million children aged 3-17 had ADHD, 5.8 million had anxiety, 5.5 million had behaviour problems and 2.7 million had depression. According to experts, weighted plush toys can help ease these stresses and anxieties. It comes as no surprise then that 70% of young children develop connections to toys or blankets. “Weighted plush toys can help with anxiety as the gentle pressure provided by the heaviness of these toys offers a calming effect, similar to the sensation of being hugged or swaddled,” says Ambrose. “This pressure has been reported to promote relaxation and feelings of anxiety or stress.” He continues: “These weighted toys can assist in regulating sensory experiences, providing a calming effect that soothes the nervous system. In addition, these ‘toys’ have the added benefit to aid in better sleep by triggering deep touch pressure.’ The benefits of plushies Plush toys can serve as more than just temporary distractions. It has been reported that plush toys can form part of a child’s routing, which provides them with a sense of predictability. This is particularly helpful if a child is facing life changes like dealing with family transitions like divorce or starting a new school. When a child hugs their plush toy, they experience the same sensation as hugging a parent, these hugs release dopamine and serotonin which in turn releases oxytocin, the hormone associated with bonding and stress relief. These self-soothing techniques provide a physiological response that aids in a child feeling calmer and more secure. Encouraging the use of a plush toy as a comforting tool is a simple yet effective strategy. While parents should seek the advice of a professional in cases of severe anxiety, these plush toys can be an invaluable part of a broader approach. Try the New Hug-a-Lumps ZURU has launched Hug-a-Lumps with eight adorable characters weighing 1.5 kilograms each with a super soft velour plush. These giant plushies give kids and adults alike, an emotional connection of a plush with the calming effect of a big hug. “The Hug-a-Lumps weighted plush stimulates stress and anxiety while stimulating relaxation, provides emotional support, reduces cortisol with an increase in dopamine and aids in focus and concentration,” says Ambrose. “Hug-a-Lumps can be a powerful ally in helping children navigate the complexities of their emotions.” “By providing comfort, a sense of security, and a safe outlet for expressing worries, the Hug-a-Lumps companions can play a crucial role in reducing anxiety and fostering emotional resilience,” he explains. “As parents, recognising the value of such simple tools in our children’s emotional toolkit is key to helping them grow into well-adjusted, confident individuals.”  Hug-a-Lumps are available at leading toy retailers at a RSP of R649 for more information visit: www.zuru.com.

Smart Spending for Tiny Tots: Essential Baby Gear & Development Boosting Toys on a Budget

Welcoming a new baby into the family is an exciting and joyous occasion. To be sure your little one has everything they need for a happy and healthy start, it’s important to invest in high-quality baby gear and developmental toys. Here’s a comprehensive list of must-have items that will support your baby’s growth and provide peace of mind for parents. Developmental Toys Activity Gyms  Activity gyms are perfect baby toys for engaging your baby’s senses and encouraging physical development. Look for gyms that include a variety of textures, colours, and sounds. Features like dangling toys, mirrors, and tummy time mats can provide hours of entertainment and stimulation. Soft Books  Introduce your baby to the world of reading with soft books. These books are designed with bright colours, different textures, and interactive elements like crinkly pages or squeakers. They’re a great way to foster a love of books and reading from an early age. Stackable Toys  Stackable baby toys are excellent for developing fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. Choose sets that include different shapes, sizes, and colours. As your baby learns to stack and nest the pieces, they’ll develop problem-solving skills and spatial awareness. Musical Toys  Musical toys can help your baby develop auditory skills and a sense of rhythm. Look for toys that offer a variety of sounds and tunes, such as rattles, xylophones, or interactive musical mats. These toys can also be a fun way to introduce your baby to the world of music. Shape Sorters  Shape sorters are classic developmental baby toys that encourage cognitive skills and fine motor development. Choose sorters that feature a variety of shapes and colours. As your baby learns to match the shapes to the corresponding slots, they’ll develop problem-solving abilities and hand dexterity. Baby Gear Essentials Strollers  A good stroller is indispensable for new parents. Look for one that offers a smooth ride, adjustable handles, and a sturdy frame. Features like a reclining seat, ample storage space, and easy folding mechanisms can make outings with your baby more convenient and comfortable. Car Seats  Safety is paramount when it comes to car seats. Choose a model that meets the highest safety standards, with features like side-impact protection, adjustable harnesses, and cushioned headrests. Convertible car seats that grow with your child from infancy to toddlerhood can be a cost-effective option. Highchairs  Feeding time is made easier with a reliable highchair. Opt for a highchair that offers a secure harness, easy-to-clean surfaces, and adjustable height settings. Some models come with removable trays and can be converted into a booster seat as your child grows. Baby Carriers  For parents on the go, a baby carrier is a practical choice. Select a carrier that provides ergonomic support for both you and your baby. Look for features like adjustable straps, breathable fabric, and multiple carrying positions to provide comfort during long walks or errands. Cribs and Bassinets  A safe and comfortable sleeping environment is essential for your baby. Cribs and bassinets with adjustable mattress heights, sturdy construction, and breathable mattress materials are ideal. Some models also offer additional features like rocking or vibration modes to help soothe your baby to sleep. Conclusion Investing in high-quality baby gear and developmental toys is essential for your baby’s growth and development. From strollers and car seats to activity gyms and musical toys, each item plays a central role in providing a safe, stimulating, and nurturing environment for your little one. By choosing the right products, you can be sure that your baby has the best start in life, while also making parenting a more enjoyable and stress-free experience.

This in fact, Jacoby says means that the booming growth of the toy collectibles market is supported by better returns than gold, art, and financial securities. “Kidults are now responsible for more than one quarter of toy sales globally,” she says. “Comic Con is for everyone interested in pop culture and toys and aims to bring an unforgettable experience to the Mother City in April and then from the 26thto 29th September in Gauteng,” she says. “We’re buzzing about this partnership, so whether you’re a die-hard collector, a big kid at heart or love toys we’re inviting you to come take a journey with us at Comic Con.” “It’s going to be an adventure filled with nostalgia, excitement, and endless fun,” she concludes. The benefits of mouthing toys

If you have found yourself horrified by what your growing baby or toddler are putting in their mouths – you are not alone! All children go through a mouthing phase, where they seem compelled to put things in their mouths. There are different reasons, benefits and downsides to this.

When to Start Tummy Time

Start slow, mix it up, and more ways to get your baby to love tummy time. Thanks to the “Back to Sleep” campaign, which urges parents to place babies on their back for naps and nighttime, rates of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) have declined significantly. But this practice has also led to an increase in plagiocephaly, when there are flat areas on an baby’s head due to lying on her back for too long. The fix: tummy time, which gives your baby a chance to develop her neck and arm muscles and view the world from a new perspective. “This activity takes pressure off the back of the head and allows babies to look from side to side so they can maintain full range of neck motion,” explains Andy Bernstein, MD, a pediatrician in Evanston, IL. It also lets them work on their arm strength which they’ll need when they’re ready to roll over and crawl. Of course, since she’s not used to this position, your baby may end up red-faced and grunting at first. Here’s how to make tummy time more fun for both of you: Choose the right time for tummy time That usually means she’s in a good mood, has been fed, and is well-rested. Many parents have found their babies to be most receptive after a diaper change, bath or nap. Wait about an hour after the last feeding so she doesn’t spit up from the pressure on her belly. Start slow There’s no need to put babies on their bellies until they can’t stand it anymore, reminds Bernstein. Start slowly by putting her in this position for just a few minutes at 1 or 2 months of age, when babies are beginning to hold their heads up. As your baby’s neck and upper body control improves, gradually increase the amount of time spent on her belly. Make her comfy A baby’s head is larger in proportionate size to her body, so you’ll notice it can be hard to hold her noggin up for very long. Because tummy time can be awkward, you might try adding a bit of padding for her comfort. Alanna Levine, MD, a spokesperson for the American Academy of Pediatrics who practices in New York and New Jersey recommends starting babies in a ‘superman’ position over a pillow. “This helps infants to gradually develop the strength to hold their heads up,” she adds. You can also try a rolled-up baby blanket under your child’s chest, increasing the size of the roll as she grows and gets stronger. This bit of padding also frees up her hands to reach out and hold toys. Keep tummy time fun Make tummy time more enjoyable by having a few playthings on hand. You might also try getting down to your baby’s level so the two of you are eye to eye. “Make it as interactive as you can by showing your baby how it feels to roll over and stretch for nearby toys,” suggests Bernstein. Sing, smile or talk to keep your baby’s attention and place rattles, teethers or a baby-safe mirror within her reach in order to lengthen the play time. And don’t forget to share your tot’s excitement and praise her efforts when she actually grabs hold of a toy. Mix it up Tummy time doesn’t always have to occur on the floor. Change up the scenario by lying on your back and putting your baby tummy-side down on your stomach or chest. Meet her gaze and encourage her to look up. You can also give her neck muscles more of a workout by moving a toy in front of her, starting at eye level and then slowly raising it upward and side to side. “Engage in this activity as much as you can,” says Levine. A couple of sessions every day should do the trick. Supporting Your Child’s Free Play

Play skills, similar to other developmental skills, progress in complexity with time and practice. Caregiver support and their role in nurturing a child’s free play skills changes and evolves throughout the play stages. Free play allows for the development of various physical, cognitive, language and socio-emotional skills, but also contributes greatly to children’s health and well-being.   Free play, with minimal adult interference, will provide them with the opportunity to work on various skills including: problem solving, creative thinking, flexible thinking, initiative and grit, self-regulation skills, working memory, sustained focus, physicality and can provide them with an opportunity to have some quiet time to soothe and calm themselves. Free play with a playmate can further see them developing various socio-emotional skills including: self-expression, negotiation, compromise, perspective taking and empathy. Important skills for the future, wouldn’t you say…? Some children are natural players, skilled at independent free play and can shift easily between free play, screens and other home activities and tasks. Other children, however, may need more support and guidance to help them to play more independently and become captains of their own play adventures. During free play a child can create, direct and adapt the play activity and play script as they engage in their play adventure. Free play is intrinsically motivated, spontaneous, not limited by a certain set of rules or directives and not necessarily reality bound.  If you have a little one that requires support in developing their free play skills, have a look at some of my top tips for free play: Make free play part of your daily routine. Create a safe and calm play space, preferably screen free, that won’t interfere with the flow of their play. Don’t overwhelm with too many toys and objects. Rotate items in boxes and containers, keep a few favourites close and include open ended toys and objects, such as wooden blocks or empty boxes. After your child chooses a play prompt (or you have provided them with a few choices), allow them time and space for their idea to form. Don’t be too quick to offer your own ideas and try to limit the “adult agenda” when it comes to free play. Offer encouragement and support, but try not to ask too many questions at the start while their idea is developing. Children need a longer time to process information and for their ideas to take shape. Asking too many questions too early on may discourage them. Learning Through Play – The Benefits of S.T.E.A.M Toys

As parents, we all want our children to grow up with a lifelong love for learning and fun. One of the best ways to foster this is to encourage a child’s natural curiosity by learning through play.  Science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics (S.T.E.A.M) toys have been proven to simultaneously strengthen these skills while providing a unique opportunity to understand how all the disciplines interact and instilling a love of learning that aids in skill development, creativity and problem-solving. Child psychologists and experts agree that early childhood is the best time for children to be exposed to these concepts and that strengthening learning through play in early childhood is vital to activate their interest in these subjects by introducing these concepts from a young age. “It’s never too soon to expose young kids to S.T.E.A.M-related concepts through play,” says Catherine Jacoby, Marketing Manager at Toys R Us. “S.T.E.A.M toys are excellent tools to introduce your little one to the fundamental concepts of science, technology, engineering, art and maths and provide a variety of opportunities for hands-on learning.” She says that playing with S.T.E.A.M toys can be a great way to encourage your child’s natural curiosity. “During the formative years, the development of cognitive skills, emotional well-being, social competence and sound physical and mental health builds a strong foundation for success well into the adult years.” According to UNICEF, play is an essential strategy for learning, the early formative years really matter. “Scientific research over the past 30 years has taught us that the most important period of human development is from birth to eight years old,” comments Jacoby. “While learning takes place throughout life, early childhood learning through play is one of the most important ways in which young children gain essential knowledge and skills,” she explains. “It’s for this reason that learning opportunities that promote play, exploration, hands-on learning is at the core of a young child’s development.” Jacoby adds that S.T.E.A.M toys are designed to encourage active and interactive engagement. “They inspire children to discover more about the world and themselves about active play, which means children interact with the toys in a whole new way.”  S.T.E.A.M. toys are not only fun, but they also help in four key developmental areas such as confidence, critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration. “These focused activities provide children with plenty of opportunities for creative thinking, which helps them develop skills in the areas of problem-solving, spatial reasoning, engineering concepts, and more,” she adds. She says that popular S.T.E.A.M. toys include those that allow children to: explore space, learning cause and effect, discovering the body, experiencing how nature grows and visualising complicated physics concepts.”  In addition to these concepts, some of our most popular S.T.E.A.M toys include: Science:   Orboot Dinos AR Globe by PlayShifu:  Technology: Educational and Bilingual Laptop French/English:  Engineering:  Alexander Constructor Vehicles and Robots:  Art: Re-Cycle-Me S.T.E.A.M Collection Science:  Maths: Monopoly:   For more information visit: www.toysrus.co.za

The Importance of Self-Expression for kids

Self-expression is the way of showing who you are to the world, and it’s important to celebrate that uniqueness. When you express yourself, you show the world what you’re passionate about, what you stand for, and what you believe in. This can help you connect with others who share similar interests and values, and it can also help you feel more confident and empowered. However, self-expression can sometimes be difficult, especially for teens who are dealing with a variety of challenges. Some of the most common issues that teens face are: Bullying: Many teens experience bullying, either in person or online. This can make them feel isolated and alone, and it can also damage their self-esteem. Body image: Teens are often self-conscious about their appearance, and this can lead to negative feelings about themselves. Academic pressure: Teens are under a lot of pressure to perform well academically, which can be stressful and overwhelming. Family problems: Many teens come from families that are struggling with issues such as divorce, substance abuse, or financial problems. Mental health issues: Depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues can be especially difficult for teens, who may not know how to cope with these feelings. Unfortunately, some teens may feel so overwhelmed by these challenges that they consider suicide. It’s important to recognize the warning signs of suicide, such as talking about suicide, withdrawing from friends and family, and giving away possessions. If you or someone you know is experiencing these warning signs, it’s important to seek help immediately. One way to prevent suicide is to encourage self-expression. When teens feel free to express themselves, they are less likely to feel isolated and alone. Here are some ways to encourage self-expression: Encourage creative expression: Whether it’s through art, music, or writing, creative expression can be a powerful way to express emotions and connect with others. Listen actively: When teens feel heard and understood, they are more likely to open up and express themselves. Provide a safe space: Teens need a safe and supportive environment where they can be themselves without fear of judgment or ridicule. Celebrate uniqueness: Encourage teens to embrace their individuality and celebrate what makes them unique. As kids grow older, exposing them to inclusive content and products like Monster High enables them to recognise that each of us is unique, and learn to embrace what makes them special. Dealing with self-esteem or mental health is always a challenge, but cultivating an inclusive system of engagement and play is one way to create a more supportive and accepting world.

Inviting younger kids to ‘meet’ Barbie and be introduced to her inspiring world. In addition to its unique features, My First Barbie also has an affordable price point, making it a great option for parents who want to introduce their child to the wonderful world of Barbie without breaking the bank. Barbie® Introduces Its First Doll with Down Syndrome, Further Increasing Representation in the Toy Aisle

Mattel, Inc. today announced the addition of a Barbie doll with Down syndrome, created to allow even more children to see themselves in Barbie, as well as have Barbie reflect the world around them. The Barbie doll with Down syndrome is meant to inspire all children to tell more stories through play.  “As the most diverse doll line on the market, Barbie plays an important role in a child’s early experiences, and we are dedicated to doing our part to counter social stigma through play,” said Lisa McKnight, Executive Vice President and Global Head of Barbie & Dolls, Mattel. “Our goal is to enable all children to see themselves in Barbie, while also encouraging children to play with dolls who do not look like themselves. Doll play outside of a child’s own lived experience can teach understanding and build a greater sense of empathy, leading to a more accepting world. We are proud to introduce a Barbie doll with Down syndrome to better reflect the world around us and further our commitment to celebrating inclusion through play.”  To ensure the doll accurately represents a person with Down syndrome, Barbie worked closely with the National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS). NDSS empowers individuals with Down syndrome and their families by providing resources, driving policy change, engaging with local communities. NDSS’s guidance and real-world experiences informed the design process from start to finish, including the dolls sculpt, clothing, accessories, and packaging. The close partnership ensured the Barbie team celebrated individuals with Down syndrome through a doll that would immediately connect with the community. “It was an honor working with Barbie on the Barbie doll with Down syndrome,” said Kandi Pickard, NDSS President and CEO. “This means so much for our community, who for the first time, can play with a Barbie doll that looks like them. This Barbie serves as a reminder that we should never underestimate the power of representation. It is a huge step forward for inclusion and a moment that we are celebrating.” To celebrate the launch of the doll and to advocate for inclusion, visibility and understanding of people with Down syndrome, European ambassadors have joined Barbie to celebrate this important moment for the community. These include; Ellie Goldstein, Model (UK)1, Éléonore Laloux, City Counsellor & Author (France)2 and Enya, Model & Influencer (Netherlands)3 who have been captured in celebratory images and video, as they see the doll that represents them for the first time. The trio shared what this means for them and children just like them across the world.  Enya, from Netherlands said “As a child Barbie was a huge part of mine and my sister’s childhood, so the fact that there is now a Barbie that looks like me and that I can identify with is indescribable. It is so important that children become more aware about diversity and inclusion from a young age, showing there is not one ideal image. That you, I, and everyone, can be included, we are all beautiful, and that Down syndrome is a part of us, society, and the world.” Ellie Goldstein, from the UK said “I am so happy that there is a Barbie with Down’s syndrome. Seeing the doll, I felt so overwhelmed – it meant a lot to me and I’m so honoured and proud that Barbie chose me to show the doll to the world. Diversity is important to me as people need to see more people like me out there in the world and not be hidden away.” Counseled by NDSS, Barbie was purposeful with every design choice for the doll, including:  Sculpt: This doll introduces a new face and body sculpt to be more illustrative of women with Down syndrome, including a shorter frame and a longer torso. The new face sculpt features a rounder shape, smaller ears, and a flat nasal bridge, while the eyes are slightly slanted in an almond shape. The doll’s palms even include a single line, a characteristic often associated with those with Down syndrome.4 Fashion & Accessories: The doll’s puff sleeved dress pattern features butterflies and yellow and blue colors, which are symbols and colors associated with Down syndrome awareness. The doll’s pink pendant necklace with three upward chevrons represents the three copies of the 21st chromosome, which is the genetic material that causes the characteristics associated with Down syndrome. The three chevrons, or arrows, are a symbol that unites the Down syndrome community and are meant to represent “the lucky few” who have someone with Down syndrome in their life. Orthotics: The Barbie Fashionista doll with Down syndrome also wears pink ankle foot orthotics (AFOs) to match her outfit and her sneakers tout a zipper detail. Some children with Down syndrome use orthotics to support their feet and ankles, and NDSS provided a box of orthotics to serve as real-life inspiration for the ones this Barbie Fashionista is wearing, matched to her outfit and the bright colors in her design. Children’s early experiences help shape their thoughts and perceptions – and Barbie can play an important role in this process. When a child plays with Barbie, they play out their dreams and imagine they can be anything. Doll play has an incredible purpose during key developmental stages as it may help set children on a course for success by allowing them to develop empathy – fueling social skills needed to excel as they imagine their futures with an equal playing field5. The Barbie doll with Down syndrome allows more children to see themselves in Barbie as well as the world around them, which can help foster a sense of inclusivity.   Barbie is the most inclusive doll line on the market – with over 175 looks offering a variety of eye colors, hair colors and textures, body types, disabilities, and fashions to tell more stories. Barbie has introduced dolls with vitiligo, dolls that use a wheelchair or a prosthetic limb, a doll with hearing aids and a doll without hair. This year, Barbie is continuing to

How Multifunctional Toys support Creativity, Learning & Problem-Solving

The educational value of toys are easily overlooked because playing, as an developmental activity, is not supported by traditional educational models, but it’s been proven that multifunctional toys stimulate a child’s development and brain function more than you know. Music, art and playing are great educational tools, just like reading and writing. At a young age, children don’t only learn, they use all their senses to quickly develop subconscious perceptions of the world, and hands-on play encourages understanding of the world around them as well as imaginative play. Engaging with the bright colours of the tracks when playing and stunting with Hot Wheels reinforces learning as children engage create new experiences with the dynamic system of play which stimulates their emotional and imaginative development in a completely different way than books do. Toys and sets with interchangeable parts give children the freedom to play without rules, and explore their individual interests, placing them in a mental space where they can share their feeling and thoughts through play, because they feel comfortable enough to create what they want to. Apart from just stimulating creativity, which traditional approaches don’t cultivate, this kind of engagement also have an effect on other issues like self-esteem and confidence building. Barbie® Celebrates International Women’s Day by Encouraging More Girls to See Themselves in STEM

Mattel, Inc. (NASDAQ: MAT) announced today that Barbie is celebrating International Women’s Day by honouring over half a dozen women worldwide who are leaders in STEM with one-of-a-kind role model dolls made in their likeness. Barbie knows that seeing is believing – and access to successful female role models in STEM is essential for children to build and maintain an interest in the industry. Women make up less than one-third of the STEM workforce,* and it’s proven that girls are systemically tracked away from STEM throughout their education.** To show girls that they can be anything, Barbie is proud to continue its commitment to recognizing female role models and highlighting careers which are historically underrepresented by women.    “Barbie is dedicated to showcasing women who are role models from all backgrounds, professions, and nationalities so that girls around the world can see themselves in careers that might not always seem as accessible,” said Lisa McKnight, Executive Vice President and Global Head of Barbie & Dolls, Mattel. “STEM is a field where women are severely underrepresented, and our hope is that honouring these seven leaders in science and technology will encourage girls to follow their passion in this field. This International Women’s Day, we’re proud to continue our work in closing the Dream Gap and reminding girls of their limitless potential.” The Barbie brand’s lineup of global female role models includes three exceptional sisters from the United States – Susan, Anne, and Janet Wojcicki – who can serve as inspiration in a variety of STEM fields for the next generation of women leaders. The full global lineup being honoured with one-of-a-kind Barbie dolls made in their likeness includes:  Susan Wojcicki (United States): Longtime YouTube CEO Anne Wojcicki (United States): Co-Founder and CEO of 23andME Janet Wojcicki (United States):  Professor of Pediatrics and Epidemiology at the University of California, San Francisco  Katya Echazarreta (Mexico): Electrical Engineer and Science Show Host Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock (United Kingdom): Space Scientist and Science Educator Prof Dr Antje Boetius (DE): Marine Researcher and Microbiologist  Yinuo Li (China): Co-Founder of ETU Education “It feels surreal that my family’s stories might interest and impact the lives of girls worldwide. My sisters were some of my strongest role models growing up and we all built careers based on our interest in STEM. Our parents fostered independence and a belief that we could truly be anything we wanted to be when I grew up, but most important was to pursue a passion,” said Anne Wojcicki, Co-Founder and CEO of 23andME. “I’m honoured to celebrate International Women’s Day this year with Barbie alongside my family and these other powerful women in STEM leadership roles. I hope that sharing our stories encourages young girls to try something new, face something that may scare them, and look at challenges as exciting opportunities.”  “I understand first-hand that role models are essential for young girls to see what’s possible. When I was starting my career, I struggled to find inspiring stories of other women excelling in STEM – and especially in epidemiology,” said Janet Wojcicki, Professor of Paediatrics and Epidemiology, UCSF. “I have been impressed with the increasing global relevance of Barbies for girls from all communities and seen first-hand through my work the relevance of Barbie for sub-Saharan African and Latinx girls. I’m honoured to serve as a Barbie role model this year and help children worldwide see women in places that they might want to be in one day.” “Growing up, I didn’t imagine that I would have a career in tech,” said Susan Wojcicki, Longtime YouTube CEO. “My sisters and I found jobs we love and discovered how creative and fulfilling careers in STEM can be for women. I spent nearly 25 years working at Google and nine years as the CEO of YouTube, and it was an incredible experience. I hope Barbie’s International Women’s Day celebration will remind girls around the world that they can do anything.”  Barbie worked with Susan Wojcicki on a YouTube-produced custom “Short” content. In the video, Susan answers questions on empowerment and shares the lessons she’s learned along the way to becoming a top tech CEO.  In addition, Barbie will pay tribute to all these global role models through a special episode of the Barbie You Can Be Anything Series – an inspiring digital series featuring conversations with female role models – with Anne Wojcicki as she shares the fun of science, genetics, and DNA with kids from the Boys and Girls Club.  In further commitment to leveling the playing field for girls globally, Barbie established the Barbie Dream Gap Project in 2018, a multi-year global initiative created to raise awareness around limiting factors that prevent girls from reaching their full potential. Since launching, the brand has committed over 1.5 million dollars through the Barbie Dream Gap Project to nonprofit partners on a mission to achieve equality by fueling education, leadership skills and mentorship opportunities for girls. * According to the United States Census Bureau ** According to the American Association of University Women

Benefits of Card & Number-play for Kids

It would be challenging, if not entirely impossible to find someone that has never played a card-game.  Card playing appears to be one of the oldest and most traditional pastime activities for all ages. They have not only proven to improve motor and cognitive skills in children, but also encourage hours of family fun as well as multiple therapeutic benefits when used by Play Therapists. The earliest reference of card playing took place in China in the 10th century, but there is no record of how the cards were made of how the games were played. Though history has it that Italy and Spain were probably the first European countries where cards were played, these cards were hand-painted and therefore regarded as luxury items only available for the rich. Since then, the cost of card production was reduced significantly and their availability and popularity only grew, making them favourites over other traditional games. Benefits of playing with cards Although playing cards is a good way to pass the time, and is not only entertaining but also relaxing, there are a whole list of hidden learning opportunities for children as well as cognitive stimulating opportunities for the elderly.  In fact, recent studies have shown that playing cards with children has an entire series of educational and emotional benefits. Card games can help children develop their motor skills Dexterity and eye-hand-coordination is practiced by playing, manipulating, shuffling, and sorting cards during a game.  A simple action of holding a few cards in a small hand can help young children develop motor skills.  The ability to move quickly and easily can also be developed in card games such as Skip-bo where a player needs to simultaneously place, draw from a deck, and hold cards during the game. Card games can enhance cognitive skills There are many cognitive skills triggered by playing card games.  From memorising to matching numbers, pattern recognition as well as the promotion of more complex mathematic concepts can all be promoted in one single game.  Increasing levels of difficulty can also practice a child’s ability to focus longer and concentrate better.  Planning skills are triggered when the game allows for the opportunity to find different ways of winning as most card games allow some room for new, as well as more experienced players.  In that way the play can be extended for many years as little children can play with the help of an adult in the early years and progressively develop into an independent player as their skills develop. Skip-bo is a game where the basic skills of counting and concentrating is cognitively stimulating without being too challenging for the very young or the elderly. Card games foster emotional intelligence Card games allow children to take part in healthy, friendly competition in the safe, familiar environment of the home.  Achieving the goal of winning or experiencing the despair of losing are both feelings that can be processed by the players.  Patience and fair play can be fostered from early on and card games are extremely useful to do that.  All card games require communication, negotiation, taking turns, comprehending rules, and challenging each other.  These skills and character traits can all be practiced with something as simple as playing a game of cards. Benefits of colours and numbers on cards Research studies recently showed that the pairing of numbers during a card game significantly improves the ability of children to recognise, show and mention number symbols. Numerical comparison, colour or shape-matching card games were also shown to improve a child’s numerical identification skills, as well as how to compare the value of the symbols. It’s fair to say that parents can confidently assist their children to learn basic mathematical concepts such as number recognition and comparing by playing games such as Skip-bo. Play therapeutic benefits of number card games Therapists working with children during play therapy often makes use of card games to have fun and build a therapeutic relationship or to facilitate a process whereby children can learn, express, and grow emotionally.  Typically, card games work so well for relationship building as the act of card playing is safe, playful, and familiar to most children.  It helps them to relax in the therapy session and “open up” with less inhibition. There are many ways in which the numbers and colours in card games can be utilised during psychotherapy for children. Slight changes to the original card game can offer opportunities to make use of certain colours or numbers to allow for children to answer certain questions pertaining to specific feelings.  For example: if you place a red card on the table you need to think of a time that you were angry, while a blue card might allow for the child to talk about a time when he was sad. Numbers on cards can be used to teach new skills.  For example: If a child pulls a nr. 3 from a deck of cards, they should think of three ways to relax during a time of stress.  Or nr. 3 could mean to answer the third question from a different pile of emotion cards that is offered at the same time. Card games can even be used during online play therapy with children. With so much social distancing, staying-at-home periods during this pandemic, as well as online therapy now becoming a reality, cards might as well top the list for good old fashion social, emotional and cognitive stimulation.  It may be the cheaper and healthy alternative to electronic games and offer an excellent opportunity to limit screen time.

Barbie Launches Chelsea Doll with Scoliosis

The Barbie brand is known for offering the most inclusive doll portfolio on the market – and this year, the brand continues to make strides to further inclusivity in the doll line for Chelsea, Barbie’s little sister who is core to the Barbie world, by introducing a Chelsea doll with Scoliosis.  According to the Division of Orthopedics at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia more than 100,000 children are diagnosed with scoliosis each year in the U.S alone.* With the release of Chelsea with Scoliosis – featuring a doll with curvature in the spine and a removable back brace – Barbie hopes to better reflect the world around us for all kids to see themselves in play, while also normalizing the wearing of a back brace. To ensure the accuracy of the doll, Barbie worked closely with Board Certified Neurosurgeon and specialist in children’s complex spinal disorders Dr. Luke Macyszyn, who provided counsel throughout the development of the Chelsea doll with Scoliosis. “As a neurosurgeon focusing on complex spinal disorders, I was honored to work with Barbie on the development of the Chelsea with scoliosis doll and ensure the accuracy of her shape and spinal alignment. This doll is an amazing example of representation for young children and adolescents who have been diagnosed with scoliosis or wearing a back brace, and I look forward to seeing it on shelves.” – Dr. Luke Macyszyn, Board Certified Neurosurgeon and specialist in children’s complex spinal disorders and scoliosis. The Chelsea doll with Scoliosis was made to be reflective of what kids are seeing around them, helping to normalize back braces for children who may wear them and encouraging children who don’t wear back braces to celebrate the importance of inclusion. Barbie knows that imagining you can be anything is just the beginning – seeing makes all the difference. The Chelsea doll with scoliosis marks an important step in the brand’s journey in increasing representation by adding more variety in looks and providing infinitely more ways to spark imagination.  “We believe in the power of representation and are committed to creating dolls in a variety of looks so that kids can see themselves in Barbie – and now, in a line celebrating Barbie’s little sister Chelsea. We’re proud to launch the first-ever Chelsea doll with a removable back brace to continue to be more reflective of the world kids see around them. Our Chelsea line provides infinitely more ways to spark storytelling, all while providing kids with a way to develop their empathy and social processing skills through doll play.” – Lisa McKnight, Executive Vice President and Global Head of Barbie and Dolls, Mattel. Children’s early childhood experiences shape what they imagine to be possible. It is important that they see themselves reflected in product. As scoliosis occurs ten times more often in girls than it does in boys, the Chelsea line was the perfect place to expand representation.  The 6-inch Chelsea doll with Scoliosis is wearing a pink dress with matching pink back brace, white shoes, and has her long brunette hair styled in waves.
