Advice from the experts

Early intervention is key to overcoming infertility

June is World Infertility Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness around infertility challenges faced by a large number of people across the world. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), around 17.5% of adults – roughly 1 in 6 worldwide – experience infertility. It’s a major health challenge globally, affecting high-, middle-, and low-income countries alike. World Infertility Awareness Month highlights the Importance of access to infertility therapies through effective parenthood solutions at recognised infertility centres. Causes of infertility Infertility can affect both men and women and can be attributed to many causes. Male infertility can be caused by abnormal sperm production or function, challenges with sperm delivery, exposure to certain environmental factors (such as cigarette smoking, anabolic steroid use, marijuana, alcohol, and certain medications), and damage from cancer or its treatment. Female infertility may result from ovulation disorders, uterine or cervical abnormalities, fallopian tube damage or blockage, endometriosis, early menopause, pelvic adhesions and cancer or its treatment. Age is a key factor in the decline of fertility for both men and women. While men over the age of 40 may be less fertile than younger men, a woman’s fertility declines after the age of 35. This decline in women progresses quickly after the age of 37, due to the lower number and quality of eggs. According to Dr Jack Biko, President of the Southern African Society of Reproductive Medicine and Gynaecological Endoscopy (SASREG), infertility can stem from issues present at birth or those that develop later in life, affecting one or both partners. “Infertility is determined after 12 months or more of regular, unprotected sexual intercourse without a pregnancy. Women over the age of 35 should seek an evaluation if they have not been able to conceive after six months.” An infertility diagnosis can lead to feelings of distress and anxiety and may negatively impact the wellbeing of a person or a relationship. But help is available. “Early diagnosis by a fertility specialist can identify fertility challenges promptly, allowing for more effective and timely interventions,” says Dr Biko. “Fertility clinics provide medical support as well as counselling and emotional guidance to help couples navigate this difficult time with hope and resilience. Seeking treatment also ensures that you receive a personalised care plan tailored to your specific situation, which optimises your chances of a successful pregnancy.” Consider fertility preservation Age is one of the most common causes of infertility, with the growing trend of people starting their families at an older age. Egg or sperm freezing can help to address this issue. “One option that is becoming increasingly popular with women is elective egg freezing,” says Dr Biko. “It’s a prudent choice for women who wish to preserve their fertility for future family planning. By freezing your eggs at a younger age, typically in your late 20s to early 30s, you may safeguard your chances of conception later in life, when natural fertility starts to decline.” Dr Biko says this proactive approach allows families, especially women, to focus on personal, professional, or educational goals without the immediate pressure of starting a family. “Advances in cryopreservation technology have improved the success rates of using frozen eggs, making it a viable option for those planning ahead. The success of egg freezing, however, is highly dependent on the age of the woman at the time of freezing, with women under 35 having much better outcomes.” This option can be especially empowering for women who have not yet decided to have a child, or who are delaying pregnancy to focus on career advancement. Increasing your chances of achieving a successful pregnancy later in life reduces the stress and pressure associated with the natural decline in fertility. Egg, sperm, or embryo freezing is also used for fertility preservation for medical reasons, such as people with a condition, or facing treatment for a condition, which may lead to infertility. For example, cancer treatments such as radiation, surgery and chemotherapy may either temporarily or permanently impact your ability to produce healthy eggs or sperm, and freezing them prior to starting therapy may improve your chances of starting a family later. Taking control of your reproductive future For many people, knowing they have preserved their healthy sperm or eggs provides a sense of security and control over their reproductive futures. However, there is a lack of awareness about fertility preservation options. Proper counselling tailored to the personal backgrounds of patients is essential, as is the need for accurate information to help people make informed decisions. Empowering yourself through knowledge is a key step in addressing fertility concerns. If you are struggling to conceive or if you would like to preserve your future fertility, don’t delay, have an open conversation about fertility treatment options with your doctor.     References 1. Can giving up Alcohol Improve Fertility?

Affinity Health, a leading provider of high-quality health coverage, explores whether giving up alcohol can improve fertility. “The question of whether giving up alcohol can improve fertility is a topic of growing interest among individuals and couples hoping to conceive,” says Murray Hewlett, CEO of Affinity Health. “While numerous factors influence fertility, lifestyle choices can and do play a role.” The Impact of Alcohol on Fertility Alcohol consumption can affect fertility in both men and women, but the extent and mechanisms can vary. In Women For women, moderate to heavy drinking can lead to a range of reproductive issues. Alcohol can disrupt menstrual cycles, leading to irregular periods or ovulation problems, making it harder to predict fertile windows. Hormonal imbalances caused by alcohol can affect the reproductive system, reducing the chances of a successful conception. Excessive alcohol use is also linked to an increased risk of miscarriage and may harm the health of the ovum (egg). In Men Men are not exempt from the reproductive consequences of alcohol consumption. Alcohol can lead to decreased sperm count, reduced sperm motility (movement), and abnormal sperm morphology (shape), all of which can diminish male fertility. Alcohol can also affect testosterone levels and other hormones in men, further influencing fertility. Evidence Linking Alcohol to Fertility Issues Numerous studies have explored the relationship between alcohol and fertility, with many finding a negative correlation between high alcohol intake and reproductive health. For instance, research has shown that couples undergoing IVF treatments might experience lower success rates if they consume alcohol. Another study highlighted that even light drinking could potentially extend the time it takes to conceive. The Benefits of Giving Up Alcohol for Fertility  Given the evidence linking alcohol consumption with reduced fertility, abstaining from alcohol could have several benefits for individuals trying to conceive: Hormonal Balance: Eliminating alcohol from your diet can help maintain a healthier hormonal balance, essential for regular ovulation in women and optimal sperm production in men. Improved Menstrual Cycle Regularity: Cutting out alcohol can lead to more regular menstrual cycles for women, making it easier to predict ovulation and optimise the timing for conception. Enhanced Sperm Quality: Men might see improvements in sperm count, motility, and morphology, which are crucial for fertilising an egg. Health Benefits: Beyond fertility, giving up alcohol can lead to better health, including weight management, improved liver function, and reduced risk of chronic diseases. A healthier body creates a more favourable environment for conception and a healthy pregnancy. Increased Energy Levels: Alcohol can disrupt sleep patterns and lead to feelings of fatigue. Eliminating alcohol may result in better-quality sleep and higher energy levels, which are beneficial for managing the demands of trying to conceive and preparing for the energy required for parenting. Improved Immune Function: Regular alcohol consumption can weaken the immune system, making the body more susceptible to infections that could impact fertility. Abstaining from alcohol can help strengthen your immune system, contributing to overall health and well-being. Better Nutrient Absorption: Alcohol can interfere with the body’s ability to absorb essential vitamins and minerals, some of which are vital for reproductive health. Reducing alcohol can improve nutrient absorption, ensuring your body benefits from a nutritious diet. Emotional Well-being: Reducing or eliminating alcohol can have positive effects on mental health, reducing instances of mood swings, depression, and anxiety. Emotional well-being is crucial when trying to conceive, as stress can negatively impact fertility. Financial Savings: The cost of purchasing alcohol can add up. By cutting out or reducing alcohol consumption, you can save money, which can be redirected towards fertility treatments, preparing for a baby, or other wellness activities that support your fertility journey. Practical Tips for Reducing Alcohol Consumption Deciding to give up alcohol while trying to conceive is a personal choice and can depend on individual circumstances, including the frequency and amount of alcohol consumed. For many, reducing alcohol intake or abstaining altogether can be a proactive step toward improving their chances of conception. If you decide to reduce or eliminate alcohol to enhance fertility, Affinity Health offers these tips: Set clear goals: Decide whether you want to cut back or quit entirely, and set realistic, achievable goals. Seek support: Share your goals with your partner, family, or friends who can offer support and encouragement. Find alternatives: Discover non-alcoholic beverages that you enjoy to replace alcoholic drinks during social occasions or meals. Focus on overall wellness: Adopt a holistic approach to improving fertility by focusing on a balanced diet, regular exercise, and stress management. Track your progress: Keep a diary or use an app to record your alcohol consumption. This can help you stay aware of how much you’re drinking and motivate you to keep reducing it. Identify triggers: Take note of situations or emotions that make you reach for a drink and find healthier ways to cope or avoid these triggers altogether. Create new routines: If your social life or relaxation habits revolve around alcohol, try new activities that don’t involve drinking, like joining a class, exploring a hobby, or planning alcohol-free outings with friends. Reward yourself: Set milestones in reducing alcohol and celebrate each achievement with non-alcoholic treats or rewards that support your overall well-being. Educate yourself: Learn about the impact of alcohol on fertility and overall health to strengthen your resolve and commitment to reducing consumption. Be patient with yourself: Change takes time, and setbacks may occur. Be kind to yourself and recognise that every step forward is progress. Consult a professional: If you find it challenging to cut back on alcohol, consider seeking help from a healthcare professional or a support group specialised in managing alcohol consumption.

The power of Pycnogenol: Enhancing sperm health naturally with Prelox

If you’re male and in a partnership that’s struggling to conceive you should know you’re not alone. In South Africa, one in 6 couples are diagnosed with infertility and, in up to 60% of these cases, the stumbling block sits before the male, often due to a lack of quality sperm. This is where Prelox by Lamelle Pharmaceuticals comes in, but first, let’s unpack what it means to be a man with healthy “swimmers”. Understanding male fertility  Male fertility is not only determined by the quantity of sperm but also by their quality. Factors such as sperm count, motility, and morphology (the way the sperm is shaped) play important roles if you’re wanting to see two blue lines on that pregnancy test. Lifestyle choices, stress, and the fact that sperm quality decreases significantly after 50 can all impact these factors, leading to decreased fertility in men. Prelox – a natural yet effective solution Prelox is an international, innovative blend of all-natural ingredients, including Pycnogenol and L-arginine, that work synergistically to support male reproductive health. Pycnogenol, derived from French maritime pine bark – patented to Lamelle Pharmaceuticals – is one of the most powerful antioxidants known to man. Studies have shown it does an outstanding job of helping to protect sperm from oxidative stress, a common factor contributing to many cases of infertility. As for Pycnogenol’s co-star, L-arginine, this natural amino acid, enhances its effects by stimulating your body’s production of nitric oxide (NOS). This dramatically improves sperm health and includes the added bonus of improving the quality of your erections. A win-win if you want to make a baby! Expect improved sperm count, motility and morphology  Studies have shown that taking Prelox for just 30 days could increase your number of healthy sperm by as much as 150% and boost motility by 55%. Sperm motility, the ability of sperm to move efficiently, is vital for successful conception, especially when you consider the distance they have to travel. In relation to their size, they really do have a long way to go and it’s important to move fast!  The shape and structure of sperm are referred to as their morphology and this can also have a big impact on fertility. Healthy, happy sperm will have a long tail that helps them wiggle their way to the egg and an oval-shaped head that helps them implant in it. If you’re producing poorly shaped sperm, it’s going to struggle with its mission so you’ll be glad to know Prelox generates 93% more optimally-shaped sperm.  Here’s to healthier sperm, naturally  As more couples face challenges in conceiving, the importance of addressing male fertility cannot be overstated. If you’re wanting a boost – with no negative side effects – Prelox stands out as a natural yet potent and proven supplement offering new hope to those on the path to parenthood.

Air pollution, infertility and heart health: A must-read for women

Loadshedding.  It’s our very own South African swear word. Whether it’s level 2 or stage 4, or possible, or definite, or possibly definite, loadshedding causes stress. Extra hours spent in traffic; dodgy connectivity; and, for the parents among us, also the challenges of getting kiddies homework-ed, bathed, fed and into bed, all with no power. Unfortunately, the loadshedding stress isn’t going anywhere any time soon. And, there’s another serious health hazard connected with our country’s coal-fired electrical supply, which we don’t talk about enough: Air pollution.  Here’s some geography: The coal fields between eMalahleni and the Highveld are responsible for around 84% of South Africa’s production, and are the second-worst sulphur dioxide pollution hotspot in the world. Read that again. In. The. World. As background, here’s some science from Greenpeace: The burning of coal puts harmful toxins into the air, such as fine particulate matter, nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide, lead, mercury, and other heavy metals. Coal combustion emits microscopic sulphate particles that are small enough to enter the bloodstream and have been linked to a slew of health issues, including respiratory system inflammation resulting in coughing, throat irritation and breathing difficulties. They can impair lung function, worsen asthma attacks, and exacerbate pre-existing heart disease.  Bianca Leonard, Marketing Manager of air treatment specialists, Solenco, says that if you think you’re protected from such air pollution because you spend most of your time indoors, you’re wrong. “If particles are small enough to enter your bloodstream, you can be sure that they’re being carried in the air, in your car, in your home – in fact, wherever you are.” And, says Leonard, while air pollution affects everyone, women are especially vulnerable. Here are the two most significant ways that dirty air affects women’s health: 1. Heart health  Worldwide, heart disease is the number one cause of death for women. Post-menopausal women are at even higher risk as they often have higher blood pressure and cholesterol, and lower hormonal levels. At the same time, the most common diseases caused by air pollution include heart disease and stroke, especially if there’s a predisposition to these conditions.  2. Infertility A recent analysis of 18,000 couples in China found that those living with moderately higher levels of small-particle pollution have a 20% greater risk of infertility (not falling pregnant within a year of trying). The study design didn’t enable the scientists to determine how air pollution might reduce fertility, but pollution particles are known to cause inflammation in the body, which could damage egg and sperm production. Another recent study of 600 women attending a US infertility clinic found that increased exposure to air pollution is associated with a lower number of maturing eggs in the ovaries. Unfortunately, in South Africa at least, ‘clean’ electricity constitutes only about 14% of the national power grid and, while there are plans to expand this, the solution is (light!) years away. In the meantime, says Leonard, women can protect themselves by investing in an air purifier to ensure clear air in their homes. Not all air purifiers are created equal though, she cautions: “When looking at a home air purifying system, it’s important that you look for one that carries the Allergy Foundation of South Africa’s (AFSA) stamp of approval.” Leonard says that when it comes to filtration systems in various air purifiers, they don’t all function the same way and you should be looking out for a product that contains both a H13 Medical Grade HEPA filter and an Activated Charcoal or Carbon Filter. An Activated Charcoal or Carbon Filter captures harmful airborne chemicals and gasses such as SO2 (Sulfur Dioxide) and Carbon Monoxide.  HEPA stands for high-efficiency particulate air and works by forcing air through a fine mesh. There are various classes of HEPA filters, namely True HEPA and H13. With H13 being the best in class, it captures particles 3 times smaller than True HEPA filters, which makes all the difference when you consider the smallest particles that arise from asbestos, insecticide, tobacco smoke and virus carriers. H13 HEPA filters trap 99.9% of harmful particles including toxins, chemicals and metals generated by the coal industry, as well as pollen, pet dander and dust mites as small as 0.1 microns in size – smaller than the eye can see – and definitely small enough to pose serious health issues.”

Bring back the spark with Lady Prelox

Many consider a women’s 30s to be their “sexual prime” – but is it really? Most will tell you it’s the most stressful time of their life, whether they’re working hard to keep up with ever increasing costs or running ragged to raise a family. While you don’t have to be a scientist to know that stress and your sex drive are inextricably linked, there are loads of studies to prove it regardless. A lot of this has to do with the cortisol connection. When stress is chronic, the body leans on your sex hormones to meet the increased demands for higher cortisol production. The result? A huge dampener on your sexual spark. Worse yet, constantly pumping out cortisol is the fast-track to narrowing your arteries which negatively affects your blood circulation. So, what’s a busy woman to do? Clearly, if you want to heat things up between the sheets you’ll want to get a handle on your stress levels. But we’re not going to tell you how to do that. You’ve been doing your best to survive a pandemic, chances are you have already have a meditation app on your phone. Also, managing your stress levels isn’t the only way to improve your cardiovascular system and boost your sexual health. If it’s good, healthy blood flow that you’re after, consider a potent and proven supplement like Lady Prelox. Ignite the spark! Lady Prelox is an all-natural oestrogen-free supplement clinically proven to enhance blood flow to the clitoris to improve sexual satisfaction. During trials, 60% of women saw an improvement in as little as four weeks. After two months, a whopping 78% reported increased sexual desire, arousal, satisfaction and reduction in vaginal dryness. What’s in the mix The result of years of research, Lady Prelox contains the powerhouse antioxidant Pycnogenol. Derived from French Maritime Pine Bark Extract, it’s a brilliant oxidative stress-buster that can help improve circulation. Lady Prelox also contains L-Citrulline and L-Arginine, two non-essential amino acids that work together to increase your body’s nitric oxide production. This helps improve blood flow to your clitoris, creating an increase in pressure that’s essential to orgasm.  The bottom line  Life is busy. You’re stressed. We get it. But you deserve to enjoy a healthy and fulfilling sex life, especially since intimately connecting with your partner is one of the best stress-busters around. So, if you’re looking to re-ignite your relationship, consider Lady Prelox. You only need to take two capsules a day and there are no negative side-effects – but you’ll have everything to gain, including your sexual spark! www.preloxrange.co.za *data on file

Could Prelox be your all-natural fertility solution?

Couples trying to conceive without any joy will know how bittersweet celebratory events like Mother’s Day and Father’s Day can feel. After all, when you decide it’s time to start and family and things don’t come easy, it creates so much emotional trauma. Fortunately, you’re not alone. Millions of people struggle with fertility and, globally, infertility rates are rising with as many as 1 in 7 couples facing the challenge. Still, there’s a big stigma attached to infertility in that it’s seen as a “female problem”. Many hear of a couple that’s battling to have a baby and their first thought is that they’re probably dealing with a gynaelogical concern on the woman’s side. The truth, however, is that infertility affects both sexes almost equally – about one-third of cases can be attributed to men and another third are accounted for by women. Don’t lose hope Fortunately, “infertility” doesn’t haven’t to be a final diagnosis. Thanks to rapid innovations in health, an increasing number of couples are experiencing the “baby joy” they once suspected was impossible. However, for many, their journey doesn’t have to follow the imagined route of “we’re struggling – let’s head straight to IVF, do not pass go”. Millions of couples face fertility challenges due to problems that can be relatively simple to solve. As an example, often, the cause for a lack of fertility in men is sub-optimal sperm health, something that’s perfectly treatable. After all, one of the biggest threats to top quality sperm is oxidative stress caused by cell-damaging free radicals. (These damage the sperm’s head and tail, making it difficult to swim and successfully implant itself in an egg.)  Modern life makes free radical avoidance impossible – they’re literally in the air – but you can limit their destruction in a big way while significantly boosting sperm health with a proven male fertility supplement like Prelox. An all-natural solution Created by Lamelle Pharmaceuticals, Prelox contains all-natural ingredients including the super antioxidant, Pycnogenol. Aside from being potent, it’s also proven. One double-blind clinical trial showed that, after taking Prelox for just one month, men generated 93% more healthy, normally-formed sperm with a 55,5% improvement in motility. That’s a huge boost! Prelox also contains the amino acid L-Arginine that stimulates the creation of endothelial nitric oxide (e-NOS), an enzyme that can dramatically enhance sperm motility, literally increasing its ability to “swim” the long distance it has to travel to reach the egg. The bottom line Ultimately, if you’re trying to conceive without success, both you and your partner should make an appointment to chat with your doctors. As we said, infertility affects both men and women, almost equally. Still, while many things could contribute to the problem in both partners, it’s often merely a case of low quality sperm. In this case, you might be one of the many couples that can rectify this with a simple yet incredibly effective supplement, Prelox. It doesn’t require a prescription and there are no negative side effects. This way, you’d have nothing to lose and, potentially, everything to gain – including a bouncing bundle of joy. www.preloxrange.co.za

PCOS is the most common cause of infertility

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), infertility in women was ranked as the 5th highest and most serious global disability. Further to that, the Infertility Awareness Association of South Africa (IFAASA) confirmed that as many as one in six couples are impacted by infertility. Infertility occurs in both men and women with a number of risk factors such as occupational and environmental risks, age, smoking and alcohol use. Another common risk factor though for infertility in women is Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS).  Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, or PCOS, is a hormonal disorder that involves reproductive, cosmetic and metabolic problems with 8 – 13% of women suffering from this condition. Due to ovarian dysfunction, it is the most common cause of infertility. Despite the increasing numbers and people impacted by infertility, the subject of infertility is still not a topic openly discussed and carries with it an unfortunate stigma.  Symptoms commonly associated with PCOS that women should be aware of include: If you are under 35 and have been having regular unprotected intercourse for 6 – 12 months without falling pregnant. Experiencing painful periods Having irregular or prolonged menstrual cycles Elevated levels of the male hormone androgen which results in excess body hair and acne The symptoms associated with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome can cause a lot of distress and the disorder affects women in so many different ways and to different degrees. That’s why it’s best not to assume that you actually have PCOS until you’ve been diagnosed by a gynaecologist.  Is there a way to treat infertility linked to PCOS? Just as there are various factors that impact fertility, there are also many different treatment options and recommendations out there, some more invasive than others. According to 3Sixty Biomedicine’s CEO, Boitumelo Sebambo, in cases where infertility can be linked back to the hormonal imbalances caused by PCOS, patients who make use of products like Salome Fertility that contain Myo-inositol and D-Chiro-inositol, have seen an increase in their ovulation, a reduction in their hyperandrogenism and in the oxidative stress in their follicular fluid.  The efficacy of the Salome Fertility product lies in it containing the correct ratio of Myo-inositol and D-Chiro-inositol that have been extracted from the pod of the Carob Bean Tree. Clinical studies have shown that these natural extracts are instrumental in helping manage the regulation of ovarian function in PCOS patients. “We locally manufacture our Salome Fertility product, as well as the other products within the Salome range. All the products in the Salome Range are based on herbal extracts which have limited side effects AND because they are nappi coded, they are recognized and reimbursed by certain medical aids,” explains 3Sixty Biomedicine CEO, Boitumelo Sebambo. Infertility – the uninvited monster!

So, let’s get real. You and your partner have discussed starting a family and decided that you’re ready to settle down! You want to get pregnant and that’s all you can think about. You’ve adapted your lifestyle (partying less, eating healthily, and exercising a bit more). You’ve been trying for a few months but nothing is happening. All your friends are becoming pregnant and you feel a bit jealous (to be honest). It’s beginning to impact your relationships, work, and social life; it’s all you can think about and it’s consuming you. As a result, you feel angry, sad, isolated, anxious, hopeless, and, quite frankly, a mental mess – happy one minute and crying the next. Your life was perfect until infertility showed up uninvited. You’re asking your doctor what’s wrong and aren’t getting any answers. You’ re just told to keep trying. So instead, you blame yourself for a million things you did when you were younger – because the problem sits with you, right? Infertility, the inability to conceive or sustain a successful pregnancy, affects more couples than you think. One in six couples is struggling to conceive. Of those, fifteen to thirty percent of couples are diagnosed with unexplained infertility, meaning that doctors cannot find a cause or reason for their infertility. Moreover, male infertility is also on the rise and responsible for thirty-five to fifty percent of infertility cases. Sadly, fewer couples can afford assisted reproductive technologies like IVF with the increases in living costs. Even if couples can afford the treatment, it comes with certain risks and is seldom successful the first time, so it’s a substantial financial investment.  Did you know that couples who struggle with infertility have stress levels comparable to those of cancer patients? The stress, anxiety, and grief surrounding unexplained infertility and pregnancy loss can wreak havoc on your life and fertility health, making an already tricky situation unbearable! Between the endless struggles of failed fertility treatments, unanswered questions, and hopelessness, there are those who feel they have exhausted every possible option. I’ve learnt from my fertility journey that there’s a great need for a robust support system and it’s perhaps time for a fresh perspective and to rope in the help of an expert – a fertility coach. Everyone experiences infertility differently; some can’t get pregnant, others can’t stay pregnant. Navigating this path to parenthood is not an easy-to-follow, straight line for all! Fertility coaches will spend significantly more time with their patients than most health care providers, as they work with you to identify possible root causes for your particular case of infertility and how to make sense of it all. However, it’s not a one-size-fits-all approach and each case is different, either mentally, emotionally, or physically. Your fertility coach will work with you to craft a tailored strategy that’s likely to counter your unique case of infertility. Once you have a plan for how to tackle this infertility monster, you will feel better, more empowered, and more optimistic. According to a recent Harvard study, you are fifty-five percent more likely to conceive if you work on your mental health and mindset when trying to conceive. Thankfully, we’re there to help you shift your perspective and to encourage and empower you with our knowledge and expertise. The data speaks for itself: various factors significantly impact your overall reproductive health, ranging from your genetics to the chronic medications you take to blood groups and other assorted lifestyle factors. Fertility coaches help couples regain their hope and confidence by guiding them through one of the most challenging times in their lives. Fertility coaches are there to support you through each step of journey. The stress, anxiety, and grief that surround pregnancy, miscarriage loss, and new parenthood isn’t something you shouldn’t go through alone.  Even if you have an excellent medical team, they don’t always have the time to emotionally support you and your mental state might suffer as a result.  In my fertility journey, I’ve learnt that the struggle to parenthood isn’t something you should navigate alone. If you are trying to conceive, whether male or female, you could benefit from the support of a coach – especially if there have already been challenges. FertilitySOS can help you and your partner if you are struggling with infertility, recurrent miscarriages, PCOS, secondary infertility, of male infertility. Visit FERTILITYSOS for more info about our FertilitySOS book. You can also book a free discovery call to see how the FertilitySOS coach can be of assistance in your fertility journey.  www.fertilitysos.com

5 indications that your period is not ‘normal’

Every girl at a certain time in their life will start her journey into womanhood through a natural and necessary physical development known as menstruation. Sadly, despite this being a normal and natural phenomenon that every female experiences monthly until often in their 50s – menstruation and periods have a pretty negative stigma attached to them. This stigma often results in periods not being spoken about openly and a further unfortunate reality of many women being misinformed or simply clueless about what constitutes a ‘normal’ period. And herein lies the source of many common women’s reproductive health problems.  3Sixty Biomedicine’s CEO, Boitumelo Sebambo, shares these basic warning signs that every woman should look out for when having their menstrual cycle that could be an indication that their period is not ‘normal’ and they should seek advice from a medical practitioner.  A normal period lasts four to seven days, you can start getting worried if you have periods that occur less than 21 days or more than 35 days apart If you miss three or more periods in row If your menstrual flow is much heavier or lighter than usual Severe pain during your period or between periods that interferes with normal day to day activities Unusually heavy bleeding (soaking through a sanitary pad or tampon every hour for two to three hours) or passing large clots.  These abnormal period indicators can be caused by stress and underlying medical conditions such as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) that affects approximately 8 – 13% of women, and that can cause infertility in addition to hirsutism, acne, irregular periods and even hair loss. These conditions can be managed but diagnosis by a gynaecologist is important. Parents are  encouraged to take their teenage girls to visit the gynaecologist and be on the lookout for irregular symptoms in their cycles to avoid long-term effects on their health.  According to Sebambo, part of their mission this youth month is to help educate and empower women throughout their journey of womanhood so they can manage and overcome common women’s reproductive health conditions. “We believe that every woman’s journey matters. No matter what stage of life they are at, we want to help other South African women live quality lives uninhibited by common health issues that could be limiting to their success”. Beat hot flashes naturally with Lady Prelox

When you hear about hot flashes, most women immediately think “menopause” and reckon it’s something they’d only have to worry about in their mid to late 40s. Thing is, this annoying, make-up ruining, life-interrupting symptom can affect you as early as your late 30s during perimenopause, the lead up to your final period. Even more annoying? While, on average, perimenopause lasts around 4 to 6 years, it can bother you for as long as 10. That’s a long time to want to walk around with a fan in your handbag but, happily, you don’t have to. Lady Prelox, an all-natural supplement developed especially for women, has been proven to help alleviate hot flashes. But before we get into why it’s a brilliant solution to an age-old problem, let’s first chat about why your body’s thermostat feels like it’s running wild and what you can do to temper it.  Hormones and hot flashes   When you enter perimenopause, a time when your ovaries start to run low on eggs, you can expect hormonal fluctuations that trigger a laundry list of symptoms. These include mood changes, a loss of libido, vaginal dryness, trouble concentrating, exhaustion, migraines, insomnia, night sweats and the aforementioned “super fun” hot flashes.  Fortunately, there are lots of things you can do to improve your experience as you transition into the period-free part of your life. For starters, don’t underestimate the importance of a healthy diet and getting enough exercise. You also definitely don’t want to smoke. While the increased risk of cancer should be enough to put anyone off, studies have shown that female smokers are more likely to go into menopause earlier than non-smokers. They’re also more likely to experience more frequent as well as more intense symptoms, particularly hot flashes. So what’s a woman to do?   Lifestyle changes aside, you have several treatment options that include taking hormone therapy and medications like low-dose antidepressants. Still, many women prefer to go the natural route and this is where things can get murky. For example, black cohosh is a herb commonly used with the intention of improving the symptoms of menopause, including hot flashes. However, there’s not enough evidence to suggest it’s effective and there’s no guarantee you’re ever buying a product containing the very particular variant of herb proposed to suppress the flash. Fortunately, not every natural option is a gamble and this is where Lady Prelox fits in – a million miles ahead of the competition.  Patented and proven  A patented estrogen-free health supplement, Lady Prelox contains premium plant-based ingredients that include Pycnogenol® (a derivative of French maritime pine bark extract), Rosvita® (rosehip extract) and two amino acids – L-Arginine and L-Citrulline. Together, they’ve been clinically proven to significantly improve hot flashes and night sweats in peri-menopausal women in as little as four weeks! Better yet, it wasn’t just the study’s participants’ ability to beat the heat that improved. Lady Prelox also enhanced their ability to focus and reduced their feelings of anxiety.  But wait – there’s more!  As if these weren’t all the reasons you’d need to consider Lady Prelox a must for any woman entering the next phase of life, there’s another big benefit you’ll want to know about: Lady Prelox is also clinically proven to boost sexual function and satisfaction in women between 37 and 45 by a whopping 88%. It’s also proven to boost sexual satisfaction in menopausal and even post-menopausal women by 60% and more. Again, these improvements were all evident within just 30 days. Talk about a brilliant bonus! If you’re struggling with hot flashes and other menopause-related symptoms – or simply want to enhance your sex life – Lady Prelox really is the obvious all-natural solution.  Visit: https://www.preloxrange.co.za/ for more information

Irregular periods? Consider an all-natural solution like Ovaria

When life is busy, weeks fly by like days. Unless you’re tracking your period via an app or pay close attention to the calendar, you might not even notice should you miss a period. Also, if you’re dealing with a spotty cycle or taking birth control to actively “skip” a period, it can be even harder to keep track. Still, once you realise you’re not menstruating the way you expect to, it’s a sign that shouldn’t be ignored. Why is my period irregular? First up, every woman is different and lots of things can affect the way they experience menstruation. However, your period could be considered irregular if the time between them starts to change or the duration begins to vary significantly. In this case, make an appointment to chat with your doctor or gynaecologist. The causes of a period gone astray really do run the gamut and can range from overdoing it in the exercise department to having fibroids (typically non-cancerous muscular tumours) growing in your uterus. Still, one of the most common conditions that can cause an irregular period is an all-too-common hormonal disorder, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). According to the South African Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, it affects as many as 20% of our country’s women in their childbearing years and is linked to 40% of its cases of female infertility. The good news, however, is that it’s very treatable and the negative effect it can have on your fertility can, in many cases, be reversed. It’s all about your hormones To understand PCOS – as well as how to treat and beat it – realise that the root cause is unbalanced hormones. To start, sufferers typically produce more androgen (the male hormone). This causes the ovaries to not release an egg each month and other negative effects include oily skin, an increase in acne and excessive hair growth – often in unwanted places such as on your face! Another hormone that goes haywire when you’ve got PCOS? Insulin. In fact, as many as 70% of PCOS sufferers will also be insulin resistant. In this case, your body starts to produce an excessive amount of insulin because it’s stopped responding to the important message this hormone signals – that it’s time to use the sugar in your blood for energy. Instead, the glucose just languishes in your veins, elevating your bloody sugar levels, and eventually gets stored away as fat. This is why being insulin resistant and struggling to lose weight, particularly around the belly area, go hand in hand. It’s also why suffering from PCOS and not treating it can dramatically increase your risk of developing diabetes. Bring back the balance Clearly, having an irregular period isn’t something you want to ignore so chat with your doctor to get a diagnosis. If it turns out to be PCOS, get onto a treatment plan as soon as possible for the sake of your fertility and your health. This might involve making lifestyle changes, like scheduling more treadmill time and improving your diet, as well as taking prescription medication that will help balance your hormones. A proven all-natural solution Another way you can ease the symptoms of PCOS is via a proven supplement – Ovaria by Lamelle Pharmaceuticals A great tasting powder that can be added to any liquid, Ovaria contains a blend of all-natural ingredients including Myo-inositol. This naturally occurring carbohydrate won’t aggravate insulin resistance. Instead, it helps to regulate your body’s response to it, reducing your risk of developing diabetes as well as other PCOS-related complications. Better yet, when you manage your insulin levels, you’ll reduce your androgen levels. As a result, Ovaria can support weight loss while reducing the severity of acne as well as excessive hair growth. The other great thing about Ovaria is that it’s clinically proven. Studies show it can restore the regularity of your menstrual cycle and increase your ovulation rate to enhance your fertility in as little as 16 weeks! The bottom line If you discover your irregular period is being caused by PCOS, know that you’re not alone. There are lots of ways you can treat it and one of the most natural, non-prescription as well as proven solutions is Ovaria. It’s helped ease the PCOS symptoms of hundreds of woman around the globe so why shouldn’t you be one of them?

Struggling with infertility? Prelox for men can improve the health of your sperm

As a man, chances are you’ve spent a period of your life ensuring you don’t impregnate your partner. But what happens when the time is right to make a baby? Only couples trying to conceive without success will know the true frustration of fertility problems. However, they’re definitely not alone. According to the World Health Organization, data suggests that as many as 186 million individuals are affected by infertility. In the eyes of many, infertility is considered a “women’s problem” but this is hardly the case. In fact, global statistics suggest that just as many men experience fertility challenges. Fortunately, many of these issues can be resolved – sometimes with something as simple as making a few lifestyle changes. For example, heavy alcohol use, smoking cigarettes, abusing drugs and being overweight can all negatively impact the health of your sperm. Still, if you’re already living on the straight and narrow without any success in the baby making department, you might want to consider a science-backed supplement that could make a dramatic difference in as little as one month – Prelox by Lamelle Pharmaceuticals. Potent and proven Created by Lamelle Pharmaceuticals, Prelox is proven to deliver significant improvements in male fertility with no negative side effects. It does this by improving the health of your sperm and increasing its number as well as its motility. (The latter is important because it has a long way to travel, so it needs a healthy “tale”, allowing it to journey all the way to the ovaries. Your sperm also needs to have a well-formed head so that it can anchor itself in an egg.) One double-blind clinical trial revealed that, after taking Prelox for just 30 days, men generated a whopping 93% more healthy, well-formed sperm and saw a 55,5% improvement in motility. It also improved the concentration of healthy sperm by an amazing 83%. It’s all about oxidation We all know that consuming a range of antioxidants is vital for good health. This helps neutralise damaging free radicals that negatively affect every cell in our bodies, including those of your sperm. This is why Prelox contains Pycnogenol, a powerful antioxidant that can help you create strong, healthy sperm that’s up to the task of travelling as well as successful implanting. It also contains L-Arginine, an amino acid that stimulates your body to produce more endothelial nitric oxide (e-NOS). Studies have shown that e-NOS can have a significant effect when it comes to stimulating sperm motility. In a way, you could think of it as a pre-race triple espresso for a sluggish sperm! The bottom line In short, if you’ve been struggling with infertility, it’s always a good idea to chat to your doctor as many things can contribute to this all too common problem. However, in many cases, this can be rectified with the simple yet ingenious patented supplement, Prelox. You’d only need to take two capsules a day and there are no negative side effects to worry about – only the proven fact that it improves the health of every cell in your body, including that of your sperm. With nothing to lose and everything to gain – including a precious bundle of joy – it makes sense to want to reap the benefits.  www.preloxrange.co.za

Infertility – Empower yourself: have the conversation

It is estimated that globally, infertility affects 8–12 % of women who are 20–44 years of age.1 Physiological causes in men account for 20–30 % of cases of infertility and physiological causes in women for 20–35 %, while 25–40 % are due to issues in both partners. In 10–20 % of cases, no cause is found.1 Women starting their families at an older age is one of the most common explanations for infertility today.1 It is vital that those facing infertility issues empower themselves by having the necessary conversation about fertility treatment with their partner and doctor, because there are interventions if treatment is sought sooner rather than later. What is infertility? Infertility is defined as failure to establish a clinical pregnancy after 12 months of regular, unprotected sexual intercourse or due to an impairment of a person’s capacity to reproduce, either as an individual or with his/her partner.2 If the woman is older than 35, she and her partner should seek an evaluation if they have not been able to conceive after six months.3 Causes of infertility All of the steps during ovulation and fertilisation need to happen correctly in order to get pregnant. Sometimes, issues that cause infertility in couples are present at birth, and sometimes they develop later in life – they can affect one or both partners. Causes of male infertility may include abnormal sperm production or function, problems with the delivery of sperm, overexposure to certain environmental factors (including cigarette smoking, anabolic steroid use, marijuana, alcohol, and certain medications), and damage related to cancer and its treatment.3 Causes of female infertility may include ovulation disorders, uterine or cervical abnormalities, fallopian tube damage or blockage, endometriosis, early menopause, pelvic adhesions (bands of scar tissue from pelvic infection, appendicitis, endometriosis or abdominal or pelvic surgery), and cancer and its treatment.3  Infertility during the COVID-19 pandemic The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in increased distress among many people – particularly those already experiencing major stressors in their lives such as problems associated with fertility.4 Dr Sulaiman Heylen, President of the Southern African Society of Reproductive Medicine and Gynaecological Endoscopy (SASREG), says: “Many women who may have been trying to conceive for 3–4 years and needed fertility treatment, but couldn’t access it because of COVID-19 lockdowns, have experienced higher levels of anxiety during the pandemic due to treatment delays. This, in turn, is associated with more negative emotions, lower expectations of future pregnancy, and greater stress and depressive symptoms.” Recent studies on perceptions of the COVID-19 pandemic among women with fertility issues, have showed that although women with fertility problems have perceived the pandemic as negative and disruptive, those who have higher optimism may be less affected.4 Dr Heylen says: “Empowering yourself through gaining knowledge is a great way to boost that optimism. For those facing infertility issues, this entails having the necessary conversation about fertility treatment with their partner and doctor. Fertility starts a slow decline when women are in their twenties – but about half of the women who come to fertility centres are already over 35 years of age. It is at age 35 that one starts to see a more rapid decline in fertility.” “Women would be far better served by investigating fertility options and fertility preservation earlier in their lives. Even if they only plan on having a family later, they can make sure that they are aware of steps that they can take, such as freezing their eggs to try to preserve their ability to have a child later on.” Dr Heylen says that while COVID-19 had a major impact on fertility care through lack of access, the rebound effect is that fertility facilities have never been busier. “Women are feeling more comfortable now to proceed with fertility treatment. Doctors also know more about COVID-19 in terms of impact on pregnancy health and fertility, and that it does not cause abnormalities in pregnancy, nor miscarriage, unless the case of COVID-19 is very severe,” says Dr Heylen. “We have seen many women who have had COVID-19 in the first trimester, and they have been absolutely fine – which is marvellous news. Women may also be safely vaccinated against COVID-19 during fertility treatment, as the vaccine has been proven to have no impact on fertility,” says Dr Heylen.  Treatment options Many people may delay fertility treatment because they fear the costs associated with in vitro fertilisation (IVF); however, there are a number of treatment options other than IVF that can improve the chance of conceiving. The treatment that will be recommended depends on factors like the cause of your fertility issues, your age, and your preferences. Options include fertility drugs to stimulate ovulation; surgery to fix a uterine condition, such as endometriosis, fibroids, or blocked fallopian tubes; intrauterine insemination, where sperm is placed directly into your uterus during ovulation; IVF, where sperm and egg are placed together in a lab until they form an embryo which is then implanted into your uterus; and intrafallopian transfer, where the sperm and egg or a fertilised egg is placed into the fallopian tube.5 “Women and men should continue with their journey towards parenthood – it is absolutely possible despite COVID-19. Time and age are of the essence when it comes to more positive fertility treatment outcomes, so we always encourage people not to delay. The important thing is to have the necessary conversation with your partner and your doctor – and to empower yourself with knowledge about your situation and the options that are available to you,” says Dr Heylen. Visit a fertility clinic near you to speak to a doctor about the options available to you and your partner. Failure to ovulate? Ovaria by Lamelle Pharmaceuticals could be your simple fertility solution

As the creators of Ovaria, a leading ovarian-health nutritional supplement for women with PCOS, we know your ovaries are an amazing organ. While they’re merely the size of an almond, they can hold up to millions of eggs. Not all of these will mature to become – quite literally – ripe and ready for fertilisation but the average woman can expect to release around 300 to 400 of them. But what happens when you don’t? Many women experience regular periods, but they’re not necessarily producing eggs. It’s only when they start trying to get pregnant – and failing – that they realise they might be dealing with a fertility issue. If this is your situation, your doctor might diagnose you with failure to ovulate. While the term might sound scary, this condition is often reversible. It’s also extremely common. As many as 40% of all women dealing with fertility issues are failing to ovulate and it can be caused by several factors. These include gynaecological conditions like polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), endocrine problems like a thyroid condition and even your weight. The one thing that all these conditions have in common is unregulated hormones. (Yep, it’s true. Having too little or too much body fat can affect your hormone levels to the point that they can’t help your body produce an egg.) Bring back the balance If you suspect you’re simply not ovulating, you should always chat to your doctor. They’ll be able to run a series of simple tests that will give them a clear idea of your hormonal profile and ovarian health. As far as treatment goes, this will always depend on what’s causing your hormonal imbalance. Potential options include taking oral medication or hormone injections. You might also need to make lifestyle changes to help you manage your stress levels and weight – two things that don’t require a prescription pad. However, if you’ve been diagnosed with PCOS, you might also want to consider a cutting-edge supplement like Ovaria. It’s clinically proven to increase the ovulation rate of PCOS sufferers in just 16 weeks! How does it work? Made from naturally-occurring ingredients, Ovaria contains Myo-inositol, a member of the vitamin B-complex vitamin group as well as the mineral Chromium. Together, they can activate the signalling pathways that regulate your thyroid hormones as well as how your body uses insulin. The latter is important as research shows that women with insulin resistance (an impaired response to insulin that results in high blood sugar) are at a much greater risk for fertility challenges. Also, by regulating your insulin levels, you’ll improve your ovaries function and this normalises your androgen carriers, thereby regulating the male hormones in your body. Ultimately, your hormones are always entwined in an intricate ballet. If one of them is off-kilter, it’s always going to have a knock-on effect on the other. This is why, by normalising your insulin, you can reduce your androgen levels. And the result? It’s often the normalisation of the menstrual cycle and enhanced fertility! Spotlight on insulin     For the record – an irregular period and a struggle with fertility – are both symptoms of PCOS, along with weight gain, acne and unwanted hair growth. This makes sense because 80% of women with PCOS also have insulin resistance. Still, even those who don’t have insulin resistance, will struggle with insulin resistant ovaries or ovaries that are challenged by how they use insulin – as well as well as higher than normal androgen levels. As Ovaria addresses all of these things, it’s become a leading supplement to help PCOS sufferers manage their condition.  The bottom line Ultimately, if you’ve been trying to get pregnant and find it to be an unexpected challenge, it’s time to see your doctor. Many things could be causing your problem and it might even be due to your partner’s health, not yours. But if you have been diagnosed with PCOS or insulin resistance, consider taking Ovaria. It’s natural, non-prescription and very safe – and has helped to change the lives of many women around the world. So why not yours?  www.ovaria.co.za

The Salome product range is locally manufactured by South African pharmaceutical company 3Sixty Biomedicine and offers over the counter treatment options to help manage heavy menstrual bleeding and menstrual pain and is based on herbal extracts. The efficacy of natural ingredients included in their products is backed by science and medical studies, which is why their products are also recognized and reimbursed by certain medical aids. They believe that #yourjourneymatters and no one should have to sacrifice a good quality of life due to common but treatable health conditions that tend to cramp your style, which is why employing a proactive approach in getting an early diagnosis and identifying treatment solutions is key. Is menstrual pain considered a medical condition?  Primary dysmenorrhea, the technical term for period pain without the presence of other conditions such as endometriosis, is the most common gynaecologic problem in women of all ages and races with the menstrual cramping being severe enough to interfere with daily activities, according to the American Academy of Family Physicians. Salome Menstrual Pain is a product based on herbal extracts of yarrow (Achillea millefolium) which has antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory & analgesic effects, which may provide relief for spasm associated with menstrual periods.  What is great about Salome Menstrual Pain is because it contains natural ingredients, even teenagers who suffer from menstrual pain can use it to manage painful menstrual cramping without worrying about unwanted side-effects. Developing good eating habits and a consistent exercise routine even while you are on holiday is also a great way to help manage this condition.  A holiday myth busted about what you can do when you have your period Menorrhagia, the technical term for heavy menstrual flow and prolonged bleeding, or having your period in general should not stop you from swimming over the holidays. In fact, it’s believed that swimming and exercising in general can actually help keep you cool and release endorphins which are nature’s pain reliever. Also taking a leaf from mother nature’s book, is the Salome Heavy Menstrual Bleeding product that helps alleviate this condition by drawing on herbal extracts from Capsella Bursa-Pastoris, a medicinal plant also known as Shepherd’s purse. This active ingredient assists with the reduction of heavy menstrual bleeding in women with regular menstrual cycles. The medicinal benefits of this plant have been scientifically proven to have smooth muscle stimulant effects and as an added bonus, Capsella has antioxidant features that improve uterine tone, meaning that it will facilitate the regulation of menstrual blood flow. Salome Heavy Menstrual Bleeding also has anti-inflammatory properties that can have a positive impact on the management of heavy menstrual bleeding. The full Salome range that contains natural ingredients is available online at Takealot.com and www.salome-range.co.za, as well as over the counter at most pharmacies nationwide.  We hope you enjoy the upcoming festive season and holidays and make sure to follow the Salome range on their social media pages to hear from Salome experts about common women’s health conditions and how best to manage these – no matter what time of year or stage of life you’re in.  Facebook: Salome Range Twitter: SalomeRange Instagram: SalomeRange

Fertility: New Research Says It Might Be Your Metabolism

Struggling to Conceive? New Research Shows a Possible Underlying Cause NEW: Natural, Safe and Effective Female Fertility Supplement The strange link between problems conceiving and insulin resistance – and how it points to a poorly understood and underdiagnosed ovarian health condition affecting 1 in 10 women OR Once-a-day ovarian health: Two flavours, super easy to mix and take daily for a host of fertility, hormonal and metabolic benefits – new Ovaria by Lamelle  Is there anything more monumental for a couple than having a baby? No. Not even the wedding day or those eventual milestones when Baby starts growing up can compare to the pregnancy and the birth – officially starting a family. Yet, more and more today, it just doesn’t happen for everyone. And it’s devastating for a woman when you just don’t conceive. Is it me? What’s wrong with me? And then, when it seems everyone around you is starting their families, there’s the eventual: Why is it only me? But here’s the thing. It’s not only you. The leading cause of infertility According to studies, anovulation (not having your period) is the number-one cause of fertility concerns in women around the world. And new research into a poorly understood and often underdiagnosed condition might hold the answer as to why. Evidence shows that 1 in 10 women could have a condition known as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). A condition that, among a few other worrying effects, is known to cause fertility problems. Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Described as a disorder of the hormonal, metabolic and reproductive systems (all at once), women with PCOS often have irregular or absent periods. And it usually goes along with acne, excess hair growth and problems maintaining your weight.  How it causes infertility Doctors found that women with PCOS tend to have a high androgen (male hormone) count in their body. Now, it’s normal for a woman to have some androgens, but abnormally high levels are known to cause hirsutism (hair growth) and often oily and acne-prone skin. What’s more, those same androgens are proven to break down the follicles that make up your ovaries. Causing irregular and missed period and eventually infertility. So, if you’ve ever had a bit of extra hair and acne, maybe some problem maintaining your weight. There might be a link to any problems you experience in conceiving. The good news is that you can talk to your doctor or gynae and have yourself tested. Especially since PCOS is linked to other life-threatening conditions. Linked to insulin resistance New studies show that PCOS actually starts with your metabolism. Researchers realised that the bodies of most women with PCOS have trouble processing insulin, the hormone it uses to extract and store the energy from carbohydrates.  And if your body struggles with insulin, it builds up in your blood and triggers your ovaries to overproduce androgen (male hormone). The technical term for that is hyperandrogenism, and you can probably already guess its symptoms: acne, excess hair growth, weight problems, irregular periods and infertility. Suddenly it all makes sense.  You’re not weird or different. It’s more common than you think. And you can get help right now. If you think you may have PCOS It’s worthwhile making an appointment to have yourself tested. We know how to treat PCOS today. And many women around the world who struggled to conceive were able to get treatment and move on with their lives. In fact, this friendly message if brought to you by Lamelle Pharmaceuticals, who’ve just launched an all-new product that helps promote ovarian health in women with PCOS. Is it time to talk to your man about his fertility?

Many couples want to have a baby and making that happen seems simple enough. But sometimes it isn’t. In this case, wanting may turn into a deep yearning. So much so that a quick scroll through social media, a place where so many share their new baby joy, could feel like walking through a minefield of painful emotions. If you’re one of the many women currently in the yearning place – it’s estimated that 10 to 12% of couples struggling with infertility – chances are you’ll be aware of the stigma. Many people, after becoming aware of your difficulties in becoming pregnant will just assume the problem lies with you. Thing is, infertility is just as often a male condition as it is a female one – with men accounting for up to 50% of the problem. Still, in this case, there’s good news. Often, the cause for a lack of fertility in men is sub-optimal sperm health, something that’s perfectly treatable. But here’s the kicker. Many men don’t like to talk about it. Men are also a lot less likely than women to seek out treatment for it. A lot of this has to do with social conditioning. Harmful notions like “boys don’t cry” and “it’s just a flesh wound – pull yourself together and get on with it” have seen millions of men endure treatable conditions they don’t have to – and lacklustre sperm health is one of them. Win the fight against free radicals!  You might not realise it, but one of the biggest threats to the health of your partner’s sperm is the oxidative stress caused by cell-damaging free radicals. Worse yet, these unstable atoms are everywhere – in the air we breathe thanks to big city pollution and cigarette smoke and even in our food due to pesticides and chemicals used for processing. These can wreak havoc on your partner’s sperm, damaging the head as well as the tail, making it difficult to implant as well as swim. In fact, it can even damage the precious DNA it carries! As we said, modern living makes completely avoiding free radicals incredibly difficult but there are lots of things your partner can do to limit their destruction. One of the best is to change the way they eat, saying no to processed foods and yes to delicious antioxidant-rich meals that include nutrient dense superfoods. Spinach, for example, is a great source of folic acid that may reduce the number of abnormal cells in sperm. They’ll also want to get more exercise and make an effort to reduce their stress levels. Another way they could dramatically boost their sperm health is by using a proven male fertility supplement like Prelox. A proven solution backed by science  Filling up your plate with antioxidant-rich foods is great advice for anybody, but if you’re looking for something scientifically proven to improve sperm health, you’ll want to know about Pycnogenol. A potent antioxidant, it’s the superstar active in Prelox, created by Lamelle Research Laboratories, and proven to deliver significant improvements in male fertility with no side effects. One double-blind clinical trial revealed that, after taking Prelox for just one month, men generated 93% more healthy, normally-formed sperm with a 55,5% improvement in motility.  Aside from packing a powerful free radical-neutralising punch, Prelox also contains the amino acid L-Arginine that boosts the creation of endothelial nitric oxide (e-NOS), something that can dramatically enhance the health of your partner’s sperm. It’s time to talk   If you and your partner have been silently struggling to conceive, perhaps it’s time to talk – to each other as well as to your doctor. Infertility is a very common condition that could be affecting either one of you. Fortunately, if poor quality sperm is the problem, this could be resolved with Prelox. It’s clinically proven to make a dramatic improvement and very easy to purchase without a prescription from all major pharmacies or via https://www.lamellepharmaceuticals.co.za/. Perhaps it’s all you need to make the difference that can change your life?

Herbal extracts and how they can help overcome common women’s health issues

These days supplements, which include vitamins, minerals and herbal extracts, are easily available and more accessible. Fortunately, science and technology has also come a long way in recent years and we have made impressive strides with vitamins, minerals and herbal extracts in particular when it comes to studying and knowing the mechanism of action and how it relates to the body’s physiology and thereby, how it helps keep you healthy or how it can help treat ailments. The Salome range, launched by South African pharmaceutical company 3Sixty Biomedicine, addresses common women’s health issues using herbal extracts as a key ingredient. The current product range offers over the counter treatment options to help manage heavy menstrual bleeding, menstrual pain, Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) and infertility linked to PCOS.  3Sixty Biomedicine locally manufactures their products and because they are based on herbal extracts the added benefit for consumers is that they are safe to use and have limited side effects. Being a biotechnology company, the efficacy of these ingredients included in their products is backed by science and medical studies, which is why their products are recognized and reimbursed by certain medical aids. Common women’s health conditions that moms can do without – period! Primary dysmenorrhea, the technical term for period pain without the presence of other conditions such as endometriosis, is the most common gynaecologic problem in women of all ages and races with the menstrual cramping being severe enough to interfere with daily activities, according to the American Academy of Family Physicians. Salome Menstrual Pain is based on herbal extracts of yarrow (Achillea millefolium) which has antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory & analgesic effects, which may provide relief for spasm associated with menstrual periods known as dysmenorrhoea. What is great about Salome Menstrual Pain is because it contains natural ingredients, females from as young as 13 years old who suffer from menstrual pain can use it to manage painful menstrual cramping without worrying about unwanted side-effects. Another common problem experienced by women is menorrhagia (heavy menstrual flow and prolonged bleeding). 3Sixty Biomedicine created their Salome Heavy Menstrual Bleeding product to help alleviate this problem. The product also draws on herbal extracts from Capsella Bursa-Pastoris, a medicinal plant also known as Shepherd’s purse, as an active ingredient to assist with the reduction of heavy menstrual bleeding in women with regular menstrual cycles. The medicinal benefits of this plant have been scientifically proven to have smooth muscle stimulant effects. As an added bonus Capsella has antioxidant features that improve uterine tone, meaning that it will facilitate the regulation of menstrual blood flow. It also has anti-inflammatory properties that can have a positive impact on the management of heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB). Understanding the basics of PCOS Salome Polycos assists with the management of symptoms commonly associated with PCOS by helping to decrease testosterone levels, increasing progesterone levels in women with irregular or absent periods and thus regulating the menstrual cycle, as well as reducing blood pressure levels. It also plays a role in increasing insulin activity in women diagnosed with PCOS, as many suffer from insulin resistance. Due to these hormonal imbalances women living with PCOS often battle with acne, irregular periods, male pattern hair loss or experience excessive body hair growth (hirsutism). Salome Polycos’s main active ingredient is D-chiro-inositol (DCI) which is a natural extract obtained from the carob tree. In cases where infertility can be linked back to the hormonal imbalances caused by PCOS, patients who make use of products like Salome Fertility that contain Myo-inositol and D-Chiro-inositol have seen an increase in their ovulation, a reduction in their hyperandrogenism and in the oxidative stress in their follicular fluid. The efficacy of the product lies in it containing the correct ratio of Myo-inositol and D-Chiro-inositol that have been extracted from the pod of the Carob bean tree. Clinical studies have shown that these natural extracts are instrumental in helping manage the regulation of ovarian function in PCOS patients. There is a solution! The full Salome range that contains natural herbal extracts is available online at Takealot.com and www.3Sixtybiomedicine.co.za, as well as over the counter at most pharmacies nationwide. The products are recognised and can also be reimbursed by medical aids.  We believe #YourJourneyMatters so follow the Salome range on their social media pages to hear from Salome experts who are committed to educating and normalizing conversations about common women’s health conditions.  Facebook: SalomeRange Twitter: SalomeRange Instagram: SalomeRange

PCOS Awareness with Salome this September

September is international PCOS Awareness Month and Salome is determined to do their bit in creating awareness & empowering women with the option of a naturally based solution to this common hormonal disorder. An estimated 8 – 13% of women suffer from Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) that involves reproductive, cosmetic and metabolic problems. The long-term effects of this condition, if not diagnosed and treated early, are infertility due to ovarian dysfunction, as well as the risk of developing diabetes, cardiac problems linked to hypertension, sleeping problems and high cholesterol. Common symptoms and diagnosis Symptoms of PCOS include irregular or prolonged menstrual cycles and elevated levels of the male hormone androgen, which results in excess body hair and acne, and polycystic ovaries where the ovaries are not able to function properly. Getting a diagnosis by a health practitioner is key to effectively managing PCOS. The onset of PCOS can start from as young as 14 or 15 years old and if left undiagnosed and untreated for years – will cause further health complications down the line, including possible infertility. Parents are encouraged to talk to their daughters about what is considered ‘normal’ and ‘abnormal’ periods. Just by having these conversations, we can normalize these common women’s health conditions and debunk myths and the unfortunate stigma attached to it. What is Salome and how can it help with PCOS? The Salome range was developed by local pharmaceutical company, 3Sixty Biomedicine, and is based on consumer insights that South Africans are wanting more natural alternatives to treat common female health conditions.  Salome Polycos assists with the management of symptoms commonly associated with PCOS by helping to decrease testosterone levels, increasing progesterone levels in women with irregular or absent periods and thus regulating the menstrual cycle, as well as reducing blood pressure levels. 3Sixty reasons why herbal extracts are becoming the preferred choice to treat women’s health issues

The Salome range, launched in 2020 by South African pharmaceutical company 3Sixty Biomedicine, addresses common women’s health issues. The current product range offering over the counter treatment options is based on herbal extracts to help manage heavy menstrual bleeding, menstrual pain, Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) and infertility linked to PCOS. Later in 2021 the range is looking to expand its offering to include capsules that treat the symptoms commonly associated with menopause.  Even prior to the presence of COVID-19, there was a growing trend by consumers to explore more organic alternatives to synthetic medical treatments. Now it’s become more important than ever for consumers to know what they’re putting into their bodies, which has been the driving force over the past two years for 3Sixty Biomedicine’s product development of the Salome range. Salome Polycos assists with the management of symptoms commonly associated with PCOS by helping to decrease testosterone levels as well as blood pressure levels. Case studies have shown that these natural extracts are instrumental in helping manage the regulation of ovarian function in PCOS patients. Dysmenorrhea, the technical term for extreme period pain, is also a common women’s health issue that impacts up to 20% of women with their menstrual cramping being severe enough to interfere with daily activities, according to the American Academy of Family Physicians. Another common problem experienced by women is menorrhagia (abnormally heavy flow and prolonged bleeding). 3Sixty Biomedicine created their Salome HMB product to help alleviate this problem. The product also draws on herbal extracts from Capsella Bursa-Pastoris, a medicinal plant also sometimes known as Shepherd’s purse, as an active ingredient to assist with the reduction of heavy menstrual bleeding in women with regular menstrual cycles. The medicinal benefits of this plant have been scientifically proven to have smooth muscle stimulant effects. As an added bonus Capsella has antioxidant features that improve uterine tone, meaning that it will facilitate the regulation of menstrual blood flow. Unique Jobs that Offer Personal Growth Opportunities

When it comes to choosing a career, many variables motivate people to head into specific directions. While some seek job security and stable salaries, others are driven by their passions and interest. And then, some seek out unique jobs that are fuelled by their passions. If you’re also looking to land a role that produces the ‘wow’ factor, there are quite a few options to consider. Here’s online job aggregator Adzuna’s list of the most extraordinary roles for anyone that likes to live life on the edge! Sky Diving Instructor Skydiving is one of the most popular bucket list items in the world, which means there are more employment opportunities in this field too. Along with constantly jumping out of a plane, this is also one of the most scenic jobs in the world. But it’s a position that comes with tremendous responsibility. Yes, it might be one of the most unique jobs under the sun, but you have your client’s life in your hands. To land this opportunity, you’ll need to attend ground training classes and complete a static line jump. You’ll also have to bag the Accelerated Freefall Course (AFF) to comply with the regulations set out by the Parachute Association of South Africa (P.A.S.A) and complete ten more levels of training. Ethical Hacker You probably think along the lines of a kid on a computer, cooped up in a dark room when you hear the word ‘hacker.’ But ethical hackers are a world apart from this. These professionals get paid to test-hack the software that companies use to ensure it’s as safe and secure as possible. Also known as white hat hackers, ethical hackers are the good guys that figure out ways of breaking into networks so they can offer recommendations on how to secure the systems so real hackers can penetrate them in the future. Chief Listening Officer Chief listening officers are in charge of “listening” to conversations on social media about brands and companies. After ‘listening’ to what consumers are saying, CLOs use the information to help their companies improve business strategies and marketing campaigns. Although it’s a relatively new role, it’s a skill that’s becoming more in demand by the day as companies try to make the most of their social media marketing campaigns. To get into one of these unique jobs, you’ll need a degree in communication or marketing. You’ll also have to demonstrate a strong background in a variety of social platforms. Veterinary Acupuncturist Acupuncture is a Chinese practice that involves using needles to stimulate different parts of the body. Acupuncturists use this method to treat a range of ailments, including chronic pain, allergies, and fertility issues, to name but a few. Interestingly, many people now recommend it for animal healthcare. Many dog owners turn to veterinary acupuncture for canine problems. But many veterinarians use it for the treatment of symptoms and conditions in cats, cows, horses, ferrets, and rabbits. Soil Scientist You already know that there are biologists, chemists, and physicists. But do you know that some scientists earn incredible salaries just by looking at dirt? These professionals study the physical, biological, mineralogical, and chemical composition of the soil. And they earn pretty impressive salaries for doing so! Since it’s a scientific role, you’ll need a bachelor’s degree in the field. But there are no hard and fast rules on what kind of experience or training you need to get into the field. It also pays to know that the field is growing. The demand for agriculture and food science is set to expand by 7% by 2028. This means there might be even more job opportunities for scientists in this field. Conclusion The world is home to many fascinating and unique jobs. And as you can see, all it takes is passion, perseverance, and a little luck to land them. Don’t have any experience in the jobs mentioned in this post? No sweat! Adzuna lists all the jobs in one place, making it easy for you to find a career you’re experienced in and qualified for!

Infertility challenges during COVID-19? Help is available!

June is World Infertility Awareness Month, a time dedicated to heightening awareness about infertility – a medical condition often not widely spoken about yet something which affects a surprisingly large number of couples around the world.1a “Infertility is when you cannot get or stay pregnant after trying for at least a year and you are under the age of 35, or if you are over the age of 35 and are unable to get or stay pregnant for six months,” says Dr Sulaiman Heylen, President of the Southern African Society of Reproductive Medicine and Gynaecological Endoscopy (SASREG).” In the past few years, the number of couples seeking treatment for infertility has dramatically increased due to factors such as postponement of childbearing in women, and lifestyle factors such as stress, smoking and body weight.1b However, an additional recent stumbling block has been the fear of contracting COVID-19 which has had an impact on delaying people’s fertility journeys. For those already undergoing fertility treatment, when COVID-19 hit, there was a suspension of treatment worldwide and the subsequent delay of fertility treatments has resulted in much psychological distress for many patients.2a The month of June therefore aims to highlight why it’s so important not to let the pandemic ruin one’s fertility plans. “In addition to psychological issues, there are the physiological ones too,” says Dr Heylen. “Delaying fertility treatment due to fear of COVID-19 can further reduce your chances of successful treatment outcomes, with studies showing a reduction in live birth rates in patients who have postponed treatment.” “Treatment was suspended during the hard lockdown, but clinics are open once again, and particularly ‘high risk’ patients whose chances of falling pregnant would be further reduced by delaying treatment are encouraged to seek assistance,” says Dr Heylen.  Dr Heylen says that infertility is a disease as defined by the WHO that can lead to disability (loss of function). “Section 27 of the constitution entrenches the fundamental right to access healthcare services and specifically includes reproductive health. SASREG feels that fertility services are an essential service and should therefore not be withdrawn for patients for whom delay in treatment would affect their prognosis.” “It’s very important to stress that assisted reproductive technology (ART) clinics are safe and have taken precautions to ensure the health and safety of patients and staff, while we await the availability of the vaccines,” says Dr Heylen. “There is minimal risk of exposure to the virus at these clinics and there is therefore no need to wait for a vaccine to reach out to receive fertility treatment.” Dr Heylen also notes that there has been much misinformation circulating online about the potential negative impact the COVID-19 vaccine might have on fertility, which has been causing patients to delay treatment while deliberating whether to have the COVID-19 vaccine or not.2b With COVID-19 vaccines now available globally, the British Medical Journal (BMJ) has stated that there is “absolutely no evidence” that these vaccines can affect the fertility of women or men.3a “Patients undergoing fertility treatment should be encouraged to receive a COVID-19 vaccine when it becomes available to all South Africans,” says Dr Heylen. “There’s no evidence that vaccination before or during fertility treatment will impact the outcome of treatment in any way. As the vaccine does not contain any actual virus, there is also no reason to delay pregnancy attempts after vaccination.” People undergoing fertility treatment (in vitro fertilisation (IVF), frozen embryo transfer, egg freezing, ovulation induction, intrauterine insemination, or using donated gametes) can be vaccinated during treatment but may wish to consider the timing given the potential side effects in the few days after vaccination.3c People may start their fertility treatment immediately after being vaccinated, unless they wish to have a second dose before pregnancy.3d Those who are donating their eggs or sperm for the use of others can also still have a COVID-19 vaccine.3e Don’t delay fertility treatment One in every four couples in developing countries is affected by infertility4a, while one in six couples worldwide experience some form of infertility problem at least once during their reproductive lifetime.1a The current prevalence of infertility lasting for at least 12 months is estimated to affect between 8 to 12% worldwide for women aged 20 to 44.1a “More than 50% of patients who visit a fertility centre are 35 or older,” says Dr Heylen. “It is very important for people not to wait too long when they consider having children. Young women need to be aware that there is a slow decline in fertility from their 20s until the age of 35, after which it starts to decrease rapidly until the age of 45. About half of infertility cases can be linked to the male. It’s therefore extremely important to investigate your fertility options and fertility preservation earlier in life, rather than leaving it too late. A woman who is not ready to have a child can choose to freeze her eggs to try to preserve her ability to have a child later on should she wish to.” Treatment options It is now estimated that more than 9 million babies have been born worldwide since the first IVF baby was born in the last 70s.1c The most common fertilisation treatment is intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI)1e. This accounts for around three quarters of all treatments globally while conventional IVF accounts for around one quarter.1e Success rates from frozen embryo transfer are increasing too.1e “The good news is that over the last decade the advances that have been made in the field of assisted reproduction are massive and there is hope for those who might be suffering from some form of infertility,” says Dr Heylen. “You are not alone and there are many options available to help you realise your dream of having children.” Visit a fertility clinic near you to speak to a doctor about the options available to you and your partner. Could you have PCOS and not even know it?

Despite being incredibly common, affecting around 1 in 10 women, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is still one of the most underdiagnosed conditions around. So much so that, of those who have it, only 1 in 3 will be diagnosed. In short, there’s a fair chance you might have it – and a good chance you don’t realise it! PCOS tends to fly under the radar because signs can be easy to miss or attributed to something else. This is why it’s important to be aware of the condition and its symptoms, especially since getting the right treatment can be life-changing.  But first – what is PCOS? PCOS is a hormonal disorder that also affects your metabolism in a way that causes insulin resistance. Ultimately, your body stops listening to insulin’s “instruction” – to convert the sugar in your bloodstream to energy. Instead, after lingering in your blood for too long – essentially raising your blood sugar – the sugar ends up being stored away as fat. This is why those suffering from diabetes as well as PCOS tend to experience weight gain. Another side effect of insulin resistance is that it triggers your ovaries to produce higher-than-normal amounts of androgen, the male hormone. The results manifest invisibly as cysts on your ovaries. The visible signs, however, include acne, excessive hair growth in unwanted places such as your face and irregular or missed periods. If left untreated PCOS can lead to infertility, type 2 diabetes and even cardiovascular disease. In short, if you’ve got it, you really want to diagnose it and treat it. Know the signs The frustrating thing about PCOS is that it’s not always so easy to recognise the symptoms. Life gets busy so we don’t keep track of our periods. Weight gain can be attributed to getting older or skipping out on gym. That recent spate of chin pimples? Perhaps that’s just “maskne” or a stress breakout.  To make things even trickier, not every woman will develop all the signs. After all, it’s not unusual to develop PCOS and never spot as much as a single chin hair, let alone develop a mustache. Other less obvious symptoms include insomnia, fatigue and a craving for carbohydrates as well as anxiety or depression. When you consider that list, it’s easy to see how they could all be overlooked as just the side-effect of a stressful life mid-pandemic and not an extremely common syndrome. So here’s the good news   If you suspect you have PCOS you’ll be glad to know there’s a lot you can do about it but your first step is to visit your doctor or gynaecologist. They’ll be able to ask the right questions and run a simple series of tests to help you get a diagnosis. As far as treatment is concerned, this could include medication as well as making certain lifestyle changes. For example, eating a low glycaemic index (GI) diet and getting regular exercise will help you manage your blood sugar levels.  You can also manage your condition with our brand new ovarian health nutritional supplement – Ovaria by Lamelle Pharmaceuticals. It contains 4000mg of Myo-Inositol, the required dose clinically proven to reduce the symptoms of PCOS of women in their fertile era.  A naturally occurring sugar associated with the vitamin B family, Myo-Inositol helps reduce your androgen levels by normalising your blood’s insulin levels. The result is an improvement in many PCOS symptoms including weight gain, acne and hair growth. In fact, Ovaria is proven to reduce unwanted hair growth by 29% in just 6 months. It can also increase your ovulation rate – improving your chance of getting pregnant – in as little as 16 weeks and help normalise your menstrual cycle. You’re not alone  Ultimately, if you suspect you might be suffering from PCOS, don’t hesitate to chat with your doctor today. An early diagnosis means the sooner you’ll enjoy a better quality of your life while reducing your risk of PCOS-related conditions like diabetes. As far as treatment options go, you’ll have several to choose from and all of them can be enhanced by Ovaria. You’re not alone. Together, we can help put you back on the path to wellness.  Learn more: https://lamelle.co.za/ovaria

EXPLICIT AND CRINGE-WORTHY WOMB STORIES UNCOVERED IN LIBRESSE’S CAMPAIGN

Feminine hygiene brand, Libresse, has launched its most intimate campaign, yet. The compelling initiative empowers women to explicitly share honest, cringe-worthy experiences of womanhood. From the profound diagnosis and fertility treatments, to severe menstrual cycles. The Womb Stories series, features women of various ages and commits to nullify common myths that exist around their complexities. In mid-February 2021, Libresse introduced the powerful stories on its digital pages, collaborating with the voices of ordinary women around the world. The campaign stems from the social misinterpretations, lack of knowledge and stigma that linger around the female body. Commonly, women are deprived to speak out in confidence and unapologetically about what really happens to their organs- the effects thereof and the process it takes to overcome it. Libresse, as a personal care brand identified this as a concern and set out to drive these important dialogues. It distinguished itself in an audacious manner, outlining and showcasing the gruesome nature to which the uterus and womb experience change.  The choice of words used are blunt and the visuals portrayed mirror the pain felt during this intimate journey. Endometriosis, Menopause, Hysterectomy and miscarriages are some of the issues that are covered. “This campaign highlights that a woman’s journey with her body is not simplistic. It reveals the emotional, complicated and sometimes painful realities of women’s intimate experiences. We want to reverse the stigma that is often associated with uteruses, periods and vaginas by encouraging women to have open conversations about their bodies, says Mpho Nojiwa, Marketing Brand Manager of Libresse.   The campaign will further launch Womb Table, a video segment that will gather doctors and experts, Dr Sindi Van Zyl, Dr Boitumelo Makaulule and Dr Chriselda Kananda to further discuss some of the issues that resonate with South African women.

Yes, it’s possible to enjoy a satisfying sex life at EVERY stage of life

Nothing stays the same forever. It’s just the way of life and it’s usually a good thing. Can you imagine still wearing that fringe you cut in your early twenties? Still, our evolution affects everything, including the way we experience intimacy. Much of this has to do with how our hormones change as we head into menopause –the commencement of our menstrual cycle. While this change of life is marked by physical symptoms such as those infamous hot flushes, many women will also experience a lower sex drive, vaginal dryness and painful sex. Still, this isn’t the only time we experience a sexual shift. We also have perimenopause to deal with –the slow, creeping transition into menopause that simply isn’t talked about enough. It usually starts in your 40s but many women begin to experience it in their 30s. The symptoms include fatigue, mood swings and trouble sleeping – things most women trying to crush it in the workspace or raise children would assume were par for the course. But there are other signs too. These include a lower sex drive and the kind of vaginal dryness that could make having sex uncomfortable or impossible without lubricant. In fact, desire and arousal phase disorders are the most common sexual problems for ANY women and up to 63% of them complain of at least one of them. But again, many women are slow to talk about these more intimate symptoms and most simply write off as a side effect of their crazy-busy lifestyle, not realising it’s actually part of a life stage and there’s a lot you can do to improve it.  Enter Lady Prelox  At Lamelle Research Laboratories, we know that women want more – especially when it comes to the six domains of sexual function – desire, arousal, lubrication, orgasms, satisfaction and no pain. While women are quick to tell us that sexual satisfaction is the most important, we understand you need to tick the other boxes to feel truly satisfied. This is why we developed Lady Prelox –a patented female intimacy supplement.  The first evidence-based female sexual function formula, Lady Prelox is proven to be efficacious in hundreds of women in 3 clinical trials. These were performed using the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI), a globally-recognised self-assessment test that evaluates all six of the domains. The studies also didn’t just involve one type of women. They covered those that were pre-menopausal and peri-menopausal as well as post-menopausal and the results were outstanding for every single group. In the pre-menopausal group, supplementation with Lady Prelox improved their overall FSFI scores within just four weeks. Those in the peri-menopausal group benefitted magnificently too. In fact, their total FSFI score improved by 60% after a month and 70% after two months! Lady Prelox also made a dramatic difference to those in the postmenopausal group, improving their FSFI score in all six domains. Better yet, Lady Prelox increased this group’s reaching orgasm domain by a whopping 71% within just four weeks. What’s not to love?  Get the intimacy you deserve  When you have everything to gain, don’t settle. Life is busy and complicated, and many things can negatively affect how you experience intimacy –from deadlines and screaming babies to the natural changes we’ll all experience at the hands of time. But it doesn’t have to be that way.  Take the FSFI test for yourself over here. If you’re not hitting the high scores the way you’d like to, consider Lady Prelox. It’s clinically proven to enhance your desire, pleasure and comfort so you can enjoy the intimacy you deserve–at every stage of life: https://www.mdapp.co/female-sexual-function-index-fsfi-questionnaire-calculator-219/ For more information visit: www.lamelle.co.za By Lamelle Research Laboratories

Could your child have Type 2 diabetes?

It’s a question no parent wants to ask. But as with so many things in life, knowledge really is power. We’ve outlined all you need to know about the risk factors for Type 2 diabetes so you know what to look for. The difference between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes First of all, it’s important to understand the difference between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes used to be called ‘juvenile diabetes’ because it was most often diagnosed in children. It’s an auto-immune condition, unrelated to lifestyle or diet. If your child has Type 1 diabetes, you’ll know very quickly because they will get very sick. They’ll lose weight, eat a lot, constantly be thirsty and need to pee a lot – often at night. They’ll also be exhausted. Type 2 diabetes, on the other hand, develops slowly. Until recently, it was mostly seen in older people – one of the risk factors is being over 45 years old. But it is being diagnosed in children more and more. This is largely because our kids aren’t as active as they used to be – one of the main risk factors is a lack of physical activity. Another is being overweight or obese, particularly around the tummy area, and having a family history of diabetes.  What to do if your family is at risk for developing Type 2 diabetes If this is ringing a bell, there are a few simple things you can do. The easiest way to remember them is to think EEL: Eat healthy Exercise Lose weight if necessary Eating healthy means cutting out junk food, sweets and treats, juice and fizzy drinks. Also cut out refined carbs, which means white bread, white rice, pasta – all the white foods. Eat lots of green vegetables (half a plate with each meal), good quality protein and some wholegrain carbs. It might feel like a big adjustment, but your whole family will feel better if you can start eating healthier. Exercise doesn’t have to mean joining a gym. It can be as simple as a 30-minute walk, most days of the week. Or some stretching or yoga at home, or a game of soccer with the neighbourhood kids. It’s so important for kids to be physically active. Losing weight is important if your child is overweight or obese, but that doesn’t mean putting them on a diet. If they’re getting active and eating healthy, drinking lots of water and staying away from junk food, weight loss will be a natural result. If you’re not sure whether or not you’re at risk of Type 2 diabetes, check out our fun 1-minute diabetes risk test on www.sweetlife.org.za. We also have all the information you need on how to reverse Type 2 diabetes, and advice and tips on how to manage diabetes if you’re living with it. The most important thing to remember is that you’re not alone in this! There is a whole community of Diabetic South Africans, all living our best lives. Symptoms of Type 1 diabetes Very hungry Very thirsty Needing to pee a lot, especially at night Sudden weight loss Exhaustion Risk factors for Type 2 diabetes 45 years old (or older) OR Overweight or obese AND Physically inactive (not much exercise) High blood pressure Family history of diabetes High cholesterol Heart disease history High-risk ethnic group (Asian Indian, Coloured) Diabetes during pregnancy or a baby over 4kg PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) If this sounds like you, it’s important to go for a diabetes screening. There are free screenings at Clicks Clinics and many independent pharmacies during November (National Diabetes Month).  Bridget McNulty is a Type 1 diabetic and the co-founder of Sweet Life Diabetes Community, SA’s largest online diabetes community. Improve Your Intimate Experience Naturally

Let’s start talking about vaginal dryness. You’re not alone and there’s a lot you can do about it Meet up with a group of women and chances are you’ll leave with some great recommendations. The best hairdresser in town. Where to find the plumpest avocados at a price that won’t break the bank. But what about a solution for vaginal dryness? It’s something we aren’t quick to talk about and yet it affects so many us. In fact, 63% of women over the age of 30 will experience some form of sexual discomfort or problem. Fortunately, thanks to brilliant strides in medical innovation, we’re beginning to understand what causes it as well as how to treat it.  The stress connection  When Taylor Swift said “You need to calm down” she might as well have been dispensing medical advice. Too much stress has a massive impact on every aspect of your health. Still, booking that online yoga class can only do so much. Modern living is a stressful business and not just in the psychological sense.  Every day, we’re exposed to an onslaught of oxidative stressors that range from environmental toxins such as air pollution to the result of making poor food choices. These create damaging free radicals that trigger a chain reaction of havoc that affects all your organs, including your sexual ones and those that control your sex drive.  One of the main ways this oxidative stress wrecks damage is by depleting your body’s nitric oxide supply, a substance that’s vital for the health of your vessels. This messes with your blood circulation and has a negative impact on your sexual health. The result? Vaginal dryness, discomfort, lower sex drive and diminished satisfaction. Bump up that blood flow Clearly, oxidative stress and a lack of blood flow is a real problem. Fortunately, there’s a lot you can do to mitigate it – including using a supplement that specifically targets the issue – Lamelle Research Laboratories Lady Prelox (R500 for 60 capsules).  Lady Prelox is an all-natural estrogen-free supplement clinically proven to boost sexual function and satisfaction in women between 37 and 45 by 88% within one month and by up to 126% in two months! It’s even proven to boost sexual satisfaction in menopausal (45–55) and even post-menopausal (50+) women by 60% and more. A brilliant blend Ever heard of the powerhouse antioxidant Pycnogenol? Derived from French Maritime Pine Bark Extract, it’s a brilliant oxidative stress-buster that can help improve circulation. This makes it the star ingredient of Lady Prelox, along with Rosvita, a rosehip extract that’s a great source of vitamin C essential to healthy psychological function.  Lady Prelox also contains L-Citrulline and L-Arginine, two non-essential amino acids that work together to increase your body’s nitric oxide production. This regulates blood flow to your sexual organs to enhance their function. Expect an improvement in the vaginal dryness department, the easing of discomfort, a higher sex drive and a lot more satisfaction. The latter is because, as nitric oxide increases blood flow to the clitoris, it creates an increase in pressure that’s essential to orgasm. What’s not to love? PCOS: You’re Not Alone – A Plea for Ovarian Health Consciousness

Acne, weight problems, excess hair, irregular periods – what if it’s all connected? This new ovarian health research asks you to take a minute for yourself and reflect … Every day, millions of women of every age and culture look at themselves in the mirror and see something that no one else does. We see that little bit of weight no diet or lifestyle changes seem to be able to fix. The excess oil, unwanted hairs and pimples that just won’t go away. We look straight past the beauty that’s there and see the girl who needs medication to have a normal period. Or the woman who’s umpteenth pregnancy test has come back negative. And we ask: why me? Why can’t I be normal? Funny thing is, that’s almost all of us. We just don’t talk about it. And perhaps it’s time that changed. Turns out, you’re not alone Over the past few years, doctors and researchers have been looking into a poorly understood and underdiagnosed ovarian health condition, known as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). And we’ve made a few startling discoveries along the way. PCOS impacts your ovaries and can cause infertility, and it’s usually only discovered when a woman struggles to conceive. But new research says that PCOS can show up at any age and as some of the most common “everyday” symptoms women experience today: Irregular, missed (or absent) menstrual cycles Weight loss or weight gain (the kind that you feel you can’t control) Acne, pimples and oily skin Excess hair growth And, in later life, difficulty falling pregnant Recognise these? The message is: You’re not alone. Research has shown 1 in every 10 women might have PCOS. What is PCOS really? New studies show that PCOS actually starts with your metabolism. If you think you might have PCOS Now, of course, not every pimple or stray hair indicates a serious underlying cause. But if you’ve really been battling with one or more of these conditions, the good news is you can get yourself tested and know for sure. Your doctor or gynae will be able to advise. And it doesn’t matter what age you are. In your teens, you might just want some answers about your weight, acne, hair growth and those times you missed your period. Or, if you want to start a family, you might already have some trouble conceiving. Even later in life, if you’ve had some of these symptoms and just want to make sure the insulin part doesn’t become something more serious (yes, PCOS has been linked to diabetes). Just know, PCOS can be managed. In fact, we at Lamelle Pharmaceuticals have developed an exciting new product specifically to complement the treatment of PCOS and promote ovarian health. Have a look: INTRODUCING: ALL-NEW OVARIA Using an inspired blend of ingredients, including a naturally-occurring sugar that’s part of the vitamin B family, Ovaria is a brand-new ovarian-health nutritional supplement whose ingredients are proven to be just as effective as traditional treatments (metformin or glucophage) for PCOS, but without any of the side effects. Woman break their silence at fertility show africa

3Sixty BioMedicine in partnership with well-known radio personality and medical practitioner, Dr Sindi van Zyl, launched a national campaign to give women struggling with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) and infertility a voice. During the Fertility Show Africa at the Gallagher Convention Centre on 6th and 7th March, the #BreakTheSilence campaign was launched in conjunction with the launch of 3Sixty BioMedicine’s new Salome Fertility product to encourage women to share their stories on social media. The #BreakTheSilence campaign started with Dr Sindi sharing her emotional story about infertility and PCOS but the overarching idea behind the campaign was based on the unfortunate reality that despite approximately one in six couples in Africa being affected by infertility, which equates to about 8 million people in Southern Africa alone; and that PCOS also affects 8 – 13% of women – it is still rarely spoken about. PCOS is the most common cause of infertility and this complex hormonal disorder that involves reproductive and metabolic problems, is at best inconvenient to women and at worst can cause infertility and even serious illness. Symptoms include irregular or prolonged menstrual cycles, elevated levels of the male hormone androgen which results in excess body hair and acne, and polycystic ovaries where the ovaries are not able to function properly.   While the exact cause of PCOS is unknown, possible complications are many. PCOS can lead to, among other things, infertility, type 2 diabetes, depression and anxiety, and endometrial cancer. Treatment is varied and for many women simple lifestyle changes like improving their diet or exercising is all they need to correct the imbalance. For others, medical interventions are necessary especially under the threat of infertility or illnesses. 3Sixty BioMedicine CEO, Walter Mbatha says, “The most common medical intervention is correcting the hormonal imbalance by prescribing a contraceptive pill. These days though, many women are steering clear of taking additional hormones and tend to favour more natural options. We understood the need and gap in the market to develop a natural product range for the treatment of a number of female health issues including PCOS. Salome Fertility has been developed specifically to assist in the management and  regulation of ovarian function in patients with PCOS and we hope this product will provide new hope to those suffering in silence as a result of this common condition,” explained Mbatha.  Salome Fertility contains higher doses of D-chiro-inositol which is extracted from the carob bean tree and has been shown to improve the functional deficiencies observed in PCOS. The benefits of the newly launched Salome Fertility product includes the reduction in hyperandrogenism, ovulation regulation and reduction of oxidative stress in follicular liquid.  To throw extra support behind the need to drive awareness and educate people about treatment options related to PCOS and infertility, 3Sixty Biomedicine also sponsored  two seminars at the Fertility Show Africa by PCOS and fertility experts. Dr Sindi van Zyl made an appearance at the Salome Fertility stand to share her journey with PCOS and infertility to members of the public who attended the first ever fertility show in Africa. “I was diagnosed with PCOS when trying to have my first child and that’s why I struggled to conceive. It took me four years to fall pregnant with my daughter and another three years to fall pregnant with my son. I have been trying to have a third child but had a miscarriage in 2014 and have been trying unsuccessfully to fall pregnant again since then. The good news is that there are many fertility treatments available for women who are struggling. I am particularly excited about 3Sixty BioMedicine’s natural product that has just been launched called Salome Fertility. I encourage other women to start connecting and talking about their struggles with PCOS and infertility – it’s time we #BreakTheSilence”, stated van Zyl when queried about her decision to participate in the ground-breaking campaign. Mbatha added that women suffering from PCOS will be amazed at the improvement in their symptoms after taking Salome Fertility, and the fact that this treatment is non-invasive with natural extracts makes it the perfect choice for many women suffering from this condition. Officially launched at the first ever Fertility Show Africa on 6th March 2020 and aptly within international ‘Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month’, Salome Fertility will be available in capsule packs at pharmacies countrywide as well as online at 3SixtyBiomedicine.co.za. Salome Fertility is the first of the Salome range being introduced into the market by 3Sixty Biomedicine in early 2020, of which all these herbal medicinal products aim to provide assistance in the treatment of common problems that affect women’s health, such as: • Fertility – helping to manage the ovarian function in patients with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome* (PCOS) • Heavy Menstrual Bleeding • Menstrual Pain or Discomfort • PMS, Menopausal Symptoms For more information about the Salome Fertility product and Salome range, go to www.3SixtyBioMedicine.co.za or connect on social media: Facebook: Salome Range Twitter: @SalomeRange Instagram: SalomeRange

Naturally why women won’t suffer in silence anymore

Because it’s not common knowledge, it’s hard to imagine that 30% of women suffer from menorrhagia or heavy menstrual bleeding every month. Painful symptoms and discomfort are just some of the things these ladies contend with behind closed doors despite their busy lives. A South African based company, 3Sixty Biomedicine believes that too many women suffer from this kind of commonplace health issue without realizing that they’re not alone and that there are more natural treatments and alternatives available to them.  Symptoms of menorrhagia include soaking through one or more sanitary pads or tampons every hour for several consecutive hours, needing to use double sanitary protection to control your menstrual flow, needing to wake up to change sanitary protection during the night, bleeding for longer than a week and passing large blood clots. In most cases it’s accompanied by mild to severe cramps lasting from 12 to 72 hours as well as nausea, vomiting, fatigue headaches and diarrhea. Some patients even complain about pain in the hips, lower back, inner thighs and pressure in the abdomen.  Debilitating symptoms like these add pressure to the lives of busy women but interestingly the condition is largely undertreated. For those who do seek medical intervention, there are several treatments that can be administered depending on a woman’s age, coexisting medical conditions, family history and desire for fertility. These include contraceptives, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, tranexamic acid or even surgery such as a hysterectomy. However, with a growing shift and demand for more natural treatments by consumers and medical practitioners – companies like 3Sixty Biomedicine are in the ideal position to offer relief to consumers from a myriad of common but often neglected women’s health issues based on natural ingredients with the added benefit of minimal side effects. The herb capsella bursa-pastoris, also known as shepherd’s purse, is a perfect example of how natural ingredients can be used in alternative treatments. This plant has been shown to significantly reduce the blood flow volumes for women suffering from heavy menstrual bleeding, containing compounds such as tannins, acetylcholine, thiamine, and flavonoids. This herb has been used for decades to treat uterine bleeding and post-partum hemorrhaging and because it has been shown to increase smooth muscle contraction in the uterus, it also facilitates the regulation of menstrual blood flow.  The good news for heavy menstrual bleeding sufferers is that there is now an alternative product to assist with management of this condition; with 3Sixty Biomedicine having introduced a natural remedy into the market. SA consumers can get Salome Heavy Menstrual Bleeding, a natural product with 400mg dry extract of capsella bursa pastoris, for the reduction of heavy menstrual bleeding in women with regular menstrual cycles after serious conditions have been excluded by a medical doctor from Takealot.com and 3Sixty Biomedicine’s website, as well as independent pharmacies nationwide. This means that women who suffer from this debilitating and inconvenient condition can finally be able to manage it naturally without the risk of complications or undesirable side effects.  For more information about Salome Heavy Menstrual Bleeding and the rest of the Salome range, go to www.3SixtyBioMedicine.co.za  or connect on social media: Facebook: Salome Range  Twitter: @SalomeRange  Instagram: SalomeRange
