While cooking for babies, it’s easy to run out of option pretty soon. During my initial days of making baby food, there were days when I used to get stuck on what to serve my little one for her next meal. But as I read more about combining various fruits and vegetables for making baby food, there were a number of options available. Sweet Potatoes is one such versatile vegetable. Right now, it’s widely available in markets and its is the best starter food for babies. They can be introduced to babies as early as 6 months. In the following recipe, I have combined sweet potatoes with pears and added a bit of cinnamon powder to it. It is warm comfort food for your baby in these winter days.
Sweet potatoes are packed with beta-carotene, which is essential for normal growth and development, a function of immune system and vision. They have various antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and help in maintaining normal blood sugar level. While pears are one of the best sources of fibre which help prevent constipation. They also contain vitamin C, vitamin K, copper and are rich in antioxidants. Pears also help in decreasing the risk of heart disease and cancer. A pear’s skin is easily digestible. Initially, I used to peel the pear’s skin. But, later I used it as is, without peeling the skin.
While purchasing pears at the store, the look of ones with smooth skin and gently yield to touch when pushed. If they are little hard to touch, then they can ripen at home. Avoid buying pear with soft spots, bruises or having any puncture marks. It’s always better to store pears in the coldest part of your refrigerator. If they are hard, you can ripen them in a fruit bowl on the countertop. To speed up the ripening process, they can be placed in a paper bag until they feel ripped. While in the case of sweet potatoes, pick ones which are free from bruises, cracks, soft spots, and should be firm. Avoid getting those which are displayed in the refrigerated section of the store, as cold alters its taste. Sweet potatoes should be stored in a cold dark place away from excess heat.

Sweet Potatoes with Pears
Preparation Time: 5 mins
Cook Time: 10 mins
5 small cubes of sweet potatoes
A dash of cinnamon powder
1/2 cup water
Wash, peel and cut sweet potatoes into small cubes. Wash and cut into small pieces.
In a pot add water, along with sweet potatoes, pears, and cinnamon powder.
Cook till sweet potatoes and pears get tender.
Once done, let it cool down a bit then give it a smash or run through a food processor.
You can make this recipe in a steamer basket as well.
I have used Green Anjou pears in this recipe.
You can add more water/formula/breast milk, if the puree gets too thick.
